Tumblr media
There’s a hollow fracture in Kirito’s chest, a fissure stretched all the way vertically across the middle, it is wide and raw. Bleeding, red, agonizing and burning, yet all at once so cold.
So cold…
It was as if a blade of ice, so cold it burned, but so hot it was cold- had flayed him open. Cleaving through skin, muscle and finally carving against the bones within his ribcage. Where it punctured downwards, rending them until broken, and struck true into his heart.
The frigid point piercing and plunging its serrated edge so deeply into it, that it found his very core, his soul and froze it over.
There was a hollow fracture in Kirito’s chest. It was far deeper than it was wide, like a black abyss, swallowing him up whole, devouring everything he had left to give.
A murky nebulous, akin to the night sky, yet there was no light to guide his way, no stars speckling the canvas of the lonely void to bring him back home.
Why? Why wasn’t there any light?
He knew why.
His light, his star, it had burnt out like a supernova and had left him all alone.
Isolated and suffocating in his own despair. That’s right… his heart had been plundered and his soul pillaged, and all that remained was ice.
Kirito’s home didn’t exist anymore.
There was a hollow fracture in Kirito’s chest and in that hollow space between his bloodied and shattered ribs, was a single blue rose.
It was withering, yet a sheen of glistening frost had crept over the surface of its beautiful petals.
Beautiful just like…him.
Beautiful it might be it was still just as ugly.
A merciless constant reminder of being so brutally bereaved of his beloved partner.
It was as if the frost had frozen Kirito in time. Forcing him to remain in that exact heart-stopping and spine-chilling moment. When the sword, that was responsible for this fractured and icy hollow in his chest, shattered and then dispelled and released his precious partner. Leaving him to plummet to the floor.
Leaving him all but lifeless, his crimson cruor pooling like a sea of ruby rose petals underneath him. His frame severed into two halves, leaving him a shell of something once whole, by the sword of the ruthless ruler of the Underworld.
“EUGEOOOOOOOO!!!”
The guttural and wounded growl, of Eugeo’s name, detonated like a violent gale. It surged rapidly out from Kirito’s vocals like a swirling storm and echoed within those damn forsaken walls.
And she with her long lavender hair, fitted with a dress as white as snow, looked on.
Outwardly, one might mistake her for a holy being, innocent and pure, full of love and light.
If Kirito didn’t know better, he would have thought her an angel sent from the heavens above to collect Eugeo.
But the angel was a devil in disguise, staring mockingly and sneering with a smirk so vile that Kirito had come to despise it and her.
That despicable woman, no not a woman, she was naught but a callous and cold creature with no capacity for loving anyone put herself. She had love for herself alone and her insatiable bloodlust for control over all.
The Administrator, Quinella, were she still alive now- Kirito would have hunted her to the ends of the Underworld and he would have slaughtered her. Then he would have used system commands to bring her back and slaughter her again, and again, and again…
Over and over… until not a trace of her fluctlight remained. He would raze her away, permanently deleting her from the system, and by the time he was finished it would be as if she’d never existed.
Yet nothing could be done now. Though Kirito’s body was in the present, his heart and soul and sense of self and time had been frozen in place. It froze over within an impenetrable barrier, an icy cage. Of which the only key that could set him free had long since melted away. Leaving it forever locked and leaving him in everlasting lament.
A part of him had died with Eugeo that day. That dark and dismal day, the day that Kirito’s star went out, the day that his precious little Eugeo…
His best friend and his ever-loyal partner, his everything…
His beloved Eugeo.
His icy blue rose.
Burned and melted away in a baleful blaze of crossing blades and blood.

_ _ _ There you have it, that's the preview! I've wanted to rp a Yujikiri reunion for a long time, but no one has ever come to the call and actually committed. So I decided to write something my damn self, and make it into a fanfic. this will be a self-indulgent Yujikiri reunion fic, with a small side of poly dynamics between Kirito, Eugeo, Alice and Asuna scattered throughout the fic and in the epilogue. If polyamory isn't for you, then this fic I'm writing isn't for you.
Please do NOT start a ship war in the comments, or reblogs, or even screen shotting this preview and making it into a ship war, thank you. This fic won't be exactly like the Yujikiri reunion I have in my head rp wise. Rp wise would be a much simpler premise, and it would be strictly Yujikiri, and not as long and as lore heavy.
Anyways, hope you enjoyed what you've read so far. I don't know if it's obvious or not, but Kirito is having a nightmare. He's reliving Eugeo's death over and over and has been every night for YEARS.
I take no responsibilities for anyone's emotional turmoil.

Just finish playing underworld office, shout out to it not for it's banging art style or interesting characters but for having a character oozing evil milf vibes without being either evil or a woman (i am talking about Boss, like Jesus Christ have you ever seen a character that without even having a drop of femininity still feels like they would say Ara Ara, oh god)

wedding night (1)
Tumblr media
pairing: general marcus acacius x virgin!wife!reader
content warning(s); dual pov, arranged marriage, implied age gap but nothing specific, period typical misogyny (Ancient Rome), mentions of violence/warfare, mention (1) of sexual violence (not against reader), mentions of pregnancy, attempted bedding ceremony, reader has hair that can be pinned back, steamy kisses, crazy amounts of sexual tension, discussions of consent because consent is sexy mandatory, virgin!reader, SOFTTTTT marcus acacius, romantic and intimate as hell, grievous historical inaccuracy because it's fucking fanfiction, canon divergent because duh
a/n: this has been living in my head for weeks now, along with every new photo we get of general marcus acacius because of course. this can be read as a prequel to bloodlust, or read entirely on its own. the reader insert is written as the same character in each fic.
this will be part 1 of the wedding night, and part 2 will include smut :)
---
You considered bolting as the sun rose on the morning of your wedding day. Stealing one of the nobleman's horses, putting as many miles as you could between yourself and the General's country house.
But, from what you've heard about the General, there would not be a corner of the earth that he would not find you in.
Your palms were clammy with sweat as the handmaidens pinned your hair back into a style of a bride. You wondered how they couldn't possibly hear the quick, panicky beating of your heart as each moment brought you closer to what you considered a life sentence.
General Marcus Acacius is venerated like a god in Rome, and anywhere else. Men boast about his wartime accomplishments as if they were their own, and ladies whisper about his scarred face like they would a demon within the walls.
So many rumors swirling around the Emperor's most esteemed general.
His hands were permanently stained red with blood, he burns the heads of his enemies in sacrifice to the gods, he kills men with icy calculation, takes women with fiery passion.
You could only imagine what kind of monster was waiting for you at the altar.
---
Marcus was in no good spirits on the day of his wedding, the marriage forced on him almost as much as it was forced on his...
Gods above, his bride.
The idea of having a bride was almost as foreign as you yourself were, since never once had Marcus even considered marrying anyone. With all the bloodshed and near-death experiences, he never exactly considered himself a man that was meant to be a husband. Or a father, for that matter.
Marcus tried not to shudder at the end of the aisle as the chorus began singing, sounding all to close to a death march.
At the sound of the choir, you entered into the wedding hall, for all gods and men to see.
His bride.
The world seemed to be brighter, the flowers bloomed more beautiful, and Marcus' vision turned clearer as you stepped into his sight.
For a moment, he forgot all about the blood of men on his hands. The shame that burdened him was cast off. Maybe he wasn't completely condemned to the Underworld.
The very possibility of you being his bringing him more relief than any wine or fine lady. The possibility of you being in his life was... redeeming. Redefining. Remaking.
One look, and he made a vow, but not to you. To himself.
If any harm were to come to you, he would unleash the fury of the gods upon them. He would protect you to the end of his days. Honor you, and serve you, however you may wish.
---
Fear coated your every nerve as you beheld your soon-to-be husband.
Nothing could have prepared you for just how mighty General Acacius was. Tan, broad, and mighty, dressed in fine white robes similar to yours. His bare hands were strong, made for swinging axes, throwing punches, and taking what he wanted. At the altar, he seemed to be near brooding, speaking his vows quietly, his voice like a roll of thunder.
You managed to keep your voice steady while you spoke your vows, but there was nothing you could do to keep your hands from shaking as the priest brought out the rings.
The general reached for your hand, and you were unable to keep from trembling.
His touch was warm on your skin, his calloused fingers surprisingly gentle as he slid the gold wedding band onto your finger. You found the nerve to meet his brown eyes, finding something utterly unreadable as he held your gaze. Could it be... fondness?
Gods, he was beautiful.
His touch steadied you, though you still exchanged rings with a thundering heart.
"In the sight of Gods and men, you are now Husband and Wife. You may kiss your bride, General."
The priest's words echoed in your head.
Husband and Wife.
The general leaned forward, an unspoken question in his warm eyes.
Swallowing, you gave a near imperceptible nod.
For such a harsh man, such a dominating man, his kiss was utterly... soft. Tender. Almost coaxing.
After a moment, he pulled away first, and you could've sworn he lingered, cherishing the air between you... before turned to the cheering wedding party.
In an instant, he changed, switching from the gentle kiss of a lover to a commanding force, a man that drinks in praise like fine wine.
A mighty man, indeed.
---
Marcus tried his best to not feel too wounded that his new wife was completely terrified of him.
He felt the thundering pulse in your hand as he slid that ring on, and he wondered if you saw the wedding band as a chain, a set of shackles. It's all too true for other women in Rome.
You barely spoke to him during the wedding feast, only giving small nods and forced smiles in between sips of wine. He had a good feeling you were resisting the urge to swallow it down in one gulp.
Marcus couldn’t help but study you— at first innocently, taking in the curve of your lips, the shine of your eyes, the polite smile you gave when someone offered congratulations.
Damn his dirty mind. As the night went on, and the celebrations continued beyond what he would’ve liked, he tried, and failed, not to eye your body as a means of distraction from the rowdy feast.
It started with your neck. He traced the slope of it with his eyes, marking every freckle and curve. He prayed to all the gods that you would want him to leave his marks on you.
Downward, he peeked slightly at your breasts whilst cursing himself. Of course, they appeared perfect beneath your wedding stola, and he wondered what manner of sounds you would make when he took them into his hands, into his mouth.
And then… Gods, those hips—
“Time for the bedding ceremony!” Emperor Geta jeered, pulling you from your seat with a firm jerk of your elbow. His eyes were greedy, scheming. “Let us see what is underneath that—“
Your face flushed with either embarrassment or fear or both. And that was all Marcus needed to see.
“There will be no bedding ceremony.”
Marcus lowered his voice to a deep warning, the kind that has sent men running for their lives.
Geta scoffed, still holding to your elbow. “It’s a wedding, Acacius, it’s your wedding. Don’t you want to show off the prize of your latest conquest? Distribute the winnings? Strip down that—“
Marcus stood, towering several inches over Geta’s slimy face. “I said… there will be no bedding ceremony.”
Geta kept his hands on you, and Marcus’s vision tinged with red hot fury.
His voice was a rumble, a threat in itself. “It’s my wedding, is it not? And I say there will be no bedding ceremony.”
People were watching now, the feast gone silent at this standoff.
Marcus knew how to pick his battles, cut his losses. But when staring down Geta, the most powerful man in the empire, he realized that for you, he would pick every single one if it meant he kept you safe.
The moments that passed were crackling, the tension between the two men sucking all the air from the celebratory hall.
Geta saw something in Marcus’s unyielding gaze, something that told him he would not win this fight, and decided the bedding ceremony wasn’t worth the scrutiny.
As the Emperor walked away, Marcus took your hand, and led you to your marriage bed.
You couldn’t find the words.
The general nearly trembled in rage on the walk to the bedchambers, but still, he maintained that odd gentleness, holding your hand as if it were the most delicate thing in the world.
Servants opened the grand doors as you entered, showing a large room with a massive four poster bed and elegant tapestries lining the walls—
Then the doors shut. And you were left alone with the legendary, bloodletting general.
And you still couldn’t find the damn words.
You knew what came next. The husband will take what is now his.
In this case, you expected your husband to take you in the same way he took lands for the empire— violently, mercilessly, with the intention of forging new legacy, through a son of Rome.
“Before you ask, my General, I wish to assure you that I am untouched,” you blurted, quoting what your mother taught you to say before you were to be… intimate. “I am pure, though I can only hope to be worthy—“
“Darling wife,” the general said quietly, so different from the commanding force from the feast. He held your hands in his, leaning down and kissing your knuckles in reverence.
You went silent, shocked at the soft fondness in his tone.
He peered at you with curiosity, and almost amusement. “The only thing I wish from you is for you to call me by my name, not title. No general, no lord, but my name. I hear it so little nowadays that I will look forward to hearing it from your lips.”
“As you wish… Marcus,” you breathed, eyes locked on his.
Marcus let out a little sigh, like he was relieved. “It’s much prettier when you say it.”
You drop your head in bashfulness, more confused by the moment. The way he spoke so kindly, so fondly.
“You know what is meant to happen tonight?” Marcus asked, almost hesitantly. You nod, undeniable fear curling in your stomach. “I need you to understand something, my darling, so listen very carefully.”
He pulled you toward the bed, sitting you both down on the silken sheets. His eyes on yours were discerning, and intent, like he was searching for something within your stare.
“I will never, ever, force myself upon you. Not in this life, or the next, or the next. I know what you might’ve heard about me, and much of it is true, but never would I take a woman without her permission. You belong to yourself, and if you never should like me in your bed, I will honor that to the end of my days."
You blinked at him in confusion. "So, you do not... you do not want me?"
Marcus exhaled sharply, looking down at your intwined hands. "That... that does not matter."
"Why not? A husband has the right to take what is his--"
"No man has any right to take a woman's body for himself, husband or not. What... what do you think is to happen tonight?"
Heat rises to your face, embarrassed at the question. By the look on his face, he was embarrassed, too.
"I don't... I don't know how it works, but some of the other wives at court say that the consummation of marriage is one of the more... painful duties of a wife. What you are meant to do to me... it's painful," you murmured, and quickly begin stammering. "B-but is it a great honor to serve you, my--"
"May I kiss you, darling?"
Some candles had been left burning, illuminating him in a warm glow. Marcus's eyes were soft, a rich, chocolate brown in the light of your bedroom, and something about them made your core flutter like one of the candles.
"Yes... yes, please."
Marcus smiled softly, and moved his hands to the sides of your neck. They were scarred, and calloused... and so warm.
His lips met yours almost hesitantly, like he was holding himself back. They were tender, tasting of sweet wine. Fingers curled lightly into your pinned hair, pulling you closer as his chest pressed against yours.
You moved your mouth with his, suddenly feeling the need for... more. You didn't know what, but you just knew you needed it.
His tongue slipped against yours, and the groan that left his throat left your pussy throbbing.
"Marcus--" you gasped, losing your breath as his lips traveled down to your neck. You could've sworn he moaned in response, sucking at your pulse point, leaving it a delicious shade of red--
"Do you want me to keep going?" He gruffed, trailing light kisses along your throat.
Oh, gods, how you wanted him to. "Yes, but..."
Marcus withdrew instantly at your seemed hesitation, pulling his mouth away but keeping his hands in your hair.
"I'm fearful," you admitted, holding his tunic to keep your hands from shaking with both desire and nerves. "Not of you, but... the rest of it."
Marcus nodded, swallowing. "We could continue kissing, if you like."
You laughed lightly, the nerves mellowing for a moment. "I'm not sure I'm prepared to have you in that way, but I know that I want to. I know that I... I want you."
Marcus's soft eyes shone with fondness, but had a wicked edge to them, like he was plotting something.
"I know I want you as well, darling. I promise, I will make sure you are prepared to have me... perhaps even over-prepared."
Your brows furrowed with confusion. "What do you mean?"
The general smiled. "I'll show you what I mean."

(i)
You rarely go outside after curfew, much less to a gathering hosted by smugglers.
Boston had one of the most prolific and stubborn smuggling systems across all the quarantine zones, or so from what you’ve heard. Your mother and the other FEDRA officers had mentioned many times how, once the fireflies were extinguished, the smugglers were the next to go.
Especially the man in charge of the entire network.
Known as the most prolific and notorious smuggler, no FEDRA officer has even seen him.
The ruler of the smugglers, the king of the underworld.
Now, you’re here at a secret warehouse gathering apparently hosted by the illusive man.
It’s rather impressive. Outside is a large warehouse, decayed and ancient. Inside, the old office spaces were gutted out to create a new building. Commotion radiates from it.
The underground world was painted to be something out of a terrifying horror story. The parties had been urban legends whispered around the QZ. Your oldest friend had urged you to finally sneak away to one.
“This will be your fun night out to celebrate your new big adult job!” She had argued. “And besides, you need to live a little. Don’t worry about your mom, just enjoy having fun for once!”
Your mom. If she knew you were here she’d pop a blood vessel or worse.
But your friend is right. You want to experience more, don’t want to feel stuck under your mom’s watch forever.
Panic still crawls over you though, like at any minute your mother might walk in and scream your name catching you.
“Y’okay there?”
You didn’t realize you’d be dazed out for so long until a voice draws you out of your thoughts.
The accent is so strikingly thick, a drawl you don’t hear often. The man standing by the mixture of the homebrewed moonshine takes your breath away.
Ruggedly handsome, with a beautiful striking nose, older and wearing the lines of age gracefully with his gray hair, he seems brewed of something fierce and wildly beautiful.
You almost feel too stunned to talk, but manage to blurt out an apology.
“Yeah I’m good, just never seen a party like this.” You admit.
The man hums a bored sort of noise before he nudges towards the table.
“Want anything?” He offers, and nodding you tell him to surprise you.
Even with a scruffy glare on his face, the man’s eyebrows raise ever slightly, surprised.
The drink he hands you is harsh, stings your nose, isn’t anything like the liquor you’ve drank with your mom. You even cough at its harsh taste.
“Don’t tell me you never drank before.” The mystery man’s voice sounds offended.
“I’ve drank before.” You fire back. “Just never anything like this.”
The man’s dark rust colored eyes survey you, actually scan you up and down, making your skin tighten, feeling strangely judged and exposed.
He takes a sip of his own drink, yet his gaze continues watching you.
“So ya lost? Is that how you ended up here?” His words are simple, cold, and a frown tugs at your lips.
“My friend was invited, decided to tag along.” Your reply is blunt
“Your friend,” he nods. “And they’re where?”
Notorious for being a roamer, even when you were younger, you’re not surprised your friend wandered away for a moment.
“Guess just went to enjoy the rest of the party.”
“It ain’t a party.” The man says deep.
“There’s alcohol, people enjoying half ass drinking games, this looks like a party.” You shrug surprisingly braver. Guess the home brewed alcohol did that.
This mystery man’s face scrunches up, like he’s annoyed with you. He simply just takes another sip of his drink.
Apologizing low, you also thank him again for the drink and decide to exit. The man doesn’t stop you. Now you go looking for your friend peeking around the party. No sign of her.
Slightly worried, you check outside.
What you discover petrifies you on sight. Your best friend tries to leave from the shadow of the guy she’s talking to. Before she can leave, his hands grab her arms, a dark prison refusing to let her go. With full force he slams her against the wall. A small scream escapes her, and fear drowns her eyes while the guy grins demonically.
You rush over fast. All you have is the drink on hand, but once you’re close enough you slam the hard plastic right against the man’s face.
He screams in pain at the sudden attack.
“Leave her the fuck alone!” You scream not caring you’re being loud. You scurry to grab your friend quickly.
“You little fucking cunt!” The attacker roars and turns to you. Wild blood streams down his nose.
He swings his fist, and you try to escape the path of impact. But it still lands a solid hard hit against the side of your head. A scream comes from your friend and everything stings. You try remembering the self defense training your mom tried drilling into you.
Until a hard impact cracks in the air.
You blink into focus. Your assailant is now on the ground.
And the grumpy mystery man you met stands above with a bloody knuckle.
He’s the one who punched the guy.
“What the fuck man?! Fucking bitch hit me first!” The bastard on the floor screams.
“Get the fuck outta here. Or else.” The mystery man barks.
The guy on the floor’s eyes go wide, like he’s finally taking in the man above. Even in the dark, you witness terror rise fast across the guy’s face.
In a possessed panic, the assailant snaps up and simply leaves.
Your head throbs where the hit landed, yet your eyes stay stuck on the man who came to rescue you.
A soft voice suddenly eases in, and you’re met with a striking older woman.
“Come on, let’s get you both back inside.” Her name is Tess, and she holds a sharp grace to her as she guides everyone to the makeshift kitchen.
You want to help your best friend clean up, but Tess orders you to sit down and reassures she’ll take care of your friend in one of the bathrooms.
“You need to sit and get your head checked out.” Your friend tells you, worried.
Before you can even move to follow her and Tess, your scruffy savior waltzes in.
“Sit down.” He barks at you and moves to grab a cooled bottle to hold against your head.
You hiss when the cold glass touches your head.
“You smashed the shit outta that drink into that fucker’s nose.” The man begins with a gruff mutter. “Got a lot more fight in ya than y’look.”
You snort.
“I just acted fast that’s all…” you mumble back.
Turning to the man, you earnestly thank him. However, his deep eyes, almost the color of ancient rust, already stare at you. His gaze is intense, sharply piercing.
“So why do you guys even throw parties? Does your boss know it doesn’t seem safe.” You comment.
“Mainly to show off the products we got.” The man explains gruffly.
Made sense.
“Wait, is your hand okay?” You suddenly blurt out remembering the blood staining his knuckles.
“M’fine.” He answers and moves his hand away before you can try examining it.
Footsteps walk into the room, and Tess returns. Her eyes gleam soft.
“Your friend’s doing good, actually making jokes and everything.”
Relief floods in.
This may be the sign to head home. It would take a lot to sneak back to your best friends’ apartment, especially this late.
“Headin’ out?” The man asks when you return from checking in on your friend.
You nod weakly.
“Don’t. It’s late. Plus we got space in the back you two can crash in.” Tess reassures, and you graciously thank her.
“Don’t thank me, Joel was the one who offered.” She grins nudging the man.
Joel, his name - it’s beautiful.
Joel glares terrifyingly hard at her. Tess simply shrugs.
So you thank Joel, even use his name. This serious but stunning man doesn’t say anything and instead walks towards the other door.
“Come on.” He suddenly commands. You and your friend rapidly follow him.
Just as promised there are rooms safely tucked away. Though room is a gracious term with the stacks of various boxes and rusty cluttered furniture, but you won’t complain.
Joel says nothing, simply shows you the room then leaves.
“He’s weird as fuck.” Your friend whispers. You had to agree.
Even in this back room space the hum of the party continues to leak in. The lights from the hallway become a sliver under the door.
Soon enough boots thump outside the door, and your eyes creak open. From the light under the door a shadow moves. You’re worried for a moment until a darker shadow goes to rest against the door.
More footsteps, lighter ones, come.
“Gonna sit there all night? You’ll get a creak in your fucking neck.” Tess.
“Just get back to the party.” Joel.
His voice rumbles back, and you feel wide awake now.
He’a staying in front of the door, keeping watch.
You don’t know this man, just met him tonight. But you’re comforted knowing he’s here. Safety is hard to find in this world. Yet soft residuals of it seem to reside buried within Joel.
When you wake up however, he’s gone nowhere to be found.
On the walk home, your best friend is thankfully upbeat.
“You know,” she comments. “I’m actually kinda a little bummed we didn’t get to meet the scary head smuggler guy.”
You laugh, a dark humored type thing.
“Yeah me too, but after last night I’m kind of glad.” You agree.
You might not have met the infamous smuggler kingpin, but meeting Joel felt precious in its own strange way.
(ii)
You run into Joel again - literally bump into him.
Trying to put all the papers and books into your bag, you step outside the school and collide into a hard body. But instead of stumbling and falling back, firm hands steady you. All your items still drop.
Something fierce constricts your throat when you focus on who you ran into.
Joel, a very grouchy Joel.
You immediately ramble out a mess of apologies while you try picking up everything. Joel silently crouches down to help gather your fallen items.
“You’re a teacher.” He notes with a gruff low rumble.
“Oh, uh, yeah. Just started this week…Someone’s gotta teach the kids what the water cycle is.” You joke.
He snorts very faintly, and your heart jumps.
The handsome man has been in your mind ever since the party. Now he’s materialized here.
Your mom calls your name walking out of the building.
In her commander FEDRA officer uniform, you hate more than ever that she’s wearing it.
“Who’s this?!” Her eyes immediately flicker suspiciously to Joel as she smiles politely.
“Someone I just ran into that’s all.” You quickly answer.
Rapidly you turn back to Joel and politely thank him again for helping pick up your scattered papers.
Joel statically nods. But you don’t miss the way his eyes narrow at your mom before he leaves.
Your mother doesn’t seem to pay him any mind, not bothered by a stranger. A very FEDRA Trait.
When your first late night working at the school comes, that has your mom worried.
“I can call in and walk you home once you’re done.” She urges.
You’re an adult. You’ve faced scarier things. After much persistence, thankfully your mother begrudgingly relents.
The sky looks beautiful when you step out of the building. You can’t see the stars often from here but still feel comforted seeing a few twinkles above.
“Keep staring off like that and you’re gonna bump into someone again.”
The familiar gruff voice jolts your heart into overdrive. When your focus whips back to earth, Joel stands a few steps away.
“Fancy running into you again.” You beam, feeling your heart flutter at the sight of him.
Joel shrugs. “My way back from work came this way again.”
“Mind some company?” He nudges his chin towards you and you quickly, embarrassingly fast, you welcome him to join you.
Joel falls into step besides you.
You ask about how his day went, and he shrugs simply saying it’s been fine.
“So, your mom’s a FEDRA officer.” He suddenly comments.
You had a feeling he’d mention it. You almost want to make a joke that she just stole the uniform. But it’s hard with how Joel’s gaze seems to simply pierce through whatever he sets his eyes onto.
“I promise,” you blurt. “I haven’t told her about the party or anything.”
Joel nods, silent again.
Abruptly he stops walking. You do as well. The soft evening lights color the streets a dingy muted gray. The curfew call would arrive soon. There’s already barely anyone on the street.
He sighs turning to you. That sword's sharp piercing gazes of his makes you worried.
“This is my stop here.” He nudges to the apartment complex across the street. “But can walk ya home, if you want.”
You exhale relieved, even find fondness sneaks in.
“Oh no, it’s okay, it’s late anyway.” You earnestly thank him.
Suddenly a hand swings across your face out from behind. A cloth covers your mouth. Before you can even scream your eyes flicker heavy.
Joel is the last blurred sight you see before darkness overcomes you.
Groggily opening your eyes, you’re now in a barren basement type room lying on a mattress on the floor. Immediately you spot Tess. Then you notice a man with a large rifle standing by the door.
“What the fuck happened?!” You scream.
“Hey, relax.” Tess says eased. “It’s nothing personal.”
“Nothing personal?! What the fuck do you do to me?! Why am I here?!”
Before she can answer you, Joel waltzes into the room. The room shadows paint him a terrifying creature who stares at you hard.
“Look,” Joel’s voice is cold, unwavering steel. “I’m gonna be straight with ya. We ain’t doing shit to you. Just need your mom to make FEDRA give us what we want.”
Your eyes go wide.
You’re being held as a hostage.
Before anything else can be said, another man steps in.
“Sorry boss, but we’re getting word there’s chatter on the coms.” The man explains to Joel.
He nods then glances over to you from his shoulder.
“Y’don’t do anything fucking stupid and we might all make it out of this alright.” That’s all Joel says then exits.
The man with the gun nods to him almost as a sign of respect.
Even though so many thoughts buzz around in your head like angry wasps, it clicks fast.
It’s Joel.
Joel is the infamous underworld smuggling king.
(iii)
The rest of the day is a blur. You’re left alone and cry into your hands until it hurts. The man with the gun standing guard outside your door doesn’t seem to care. Tess at one point returns with cleaner clothes, even offers you a shower and a meal, but you stay silent.
Some of the smugglers pop their head into your room, curious about the new hostage.
“Aw, you’re too pretty to cry.” One of them grins.
“Yeah there’s someone else I could give ya to cry about.” Another snickers disgustingly, and you want to crawl into yourself.
Joel barks a hard loud yell.
“Any of you fuckers so much as even looks in there again or even dares touch her, you’ll have to fuckin’ deal with me, understand?!” Joel commands, a god among chaos.
It’s not entirely comforting, but it’s enough.
Not a soul walks by your room after that.
Later that night Joel comes with rations and more water.
“Y’need to eat something.” He suggests. You don’t even move to touch the food.
Joel sighs, placing his hands on his hips.
“I’m doing this to find my brother, simple as that. Need FEDRA to give us a good car or even a battery at best to get us on the road.” Joel explains sharply, methodically.
All of this for his brother. The love of a family member in exchange for the love of another. You understand, even can sympathize, but you hated this still, hated him.
With thorny malice, you glare hard at Joel staying silent.
He frowns harder, and it highlights his wrinkles. Joel doesn’t say anything, simply clenches his jaw and leaves the room.
In the room’s solitude, you try formulating a plan. If you just get a gun you can maybe make your way out of this place.
Whatever this place is, it’s the central base. It’s hard not to listen to all the commotion and talk done in the other room. The smuggling empire is terrifyingly impressive. From what you’ve caught there’s multiple routes and tunnels that operate for different means. Some smuggle in necessities like food or medicine, while others provide arms.
Joel orders and strategizes it all. Tess is just as in charge and orders commands as well.
“You should eat.” Suddenly the guard on the other side of your open door suggests.
You’re almost tempted to throw the rations out the door.
A sudden explosion cracks above and the ground rattles. The air stills, and everything shifts.
“Fireflies!” Someone screams.
This is your chance. In the rush of the commotion and the echo of gunshots, you hope to escape.
You’re left alone.
This is it. Adrenaline pumps through you fast as you frantically search for an exit, a gun, anything. But the chaos swirls fast. More yelling arrives underground, and gunshots fire off closer.
But your legs start buckling, and your eyes start getting foggy too. Fear comes fast. Did they maybe drug you?
No. You just realize…you haven’t eaten this entire day.
Now it’s getting hard to walk.
Stumbling, barely keeping focus, you lean against the wall. Your body feels like it’s going to crumble.
“Oh, look what we have here.” Someone coos. A shadow soon falls over you. “Fuck didn’t know the smugglers had someone this cute.”
This can’t be happening.
Your lips tremble while fighting back tears, can’t even focus on who’s around you.
“Maybe we can keep her as a nice treat.” Another voice laughs, and your stomach feels sick.
A gunshot rings into the hallway. A body collides so hard and fast on the floor it makes your vision focus. Crimson spills onto the concrete. When you snap your focus aware another firefly man screams in anger until Joel takes him down with ease.
Disrobed relief spills into you. Joel’s here.
In this fucked up moment you’re about to cry grateful because he’s here.
But your vision blurs more, and your body feels light.
Then your world again goes dark.
Sunlight this time wakes you up.
Panic causes you to bolt up fast, but the dizziness hits you. Hissing, you steady yourself.
“Don’t get up too fast.” Joel’s dull voice speaks from the abyss.
You’re in a small apartment now, or the decaying barebones of one. In one small room is the kitchen and a living room. You rest on the couch while Joel sits at the table.
“What happened?” You ask with a croak.
Joel nudges to the small dusty coffee table where water and rations sit waiting for you.
This time you don’t hesitate to snag them.
Joel explains all that happened. The fireflies attacked the tunnels for supplies, and it spilled into the base.
“Used the underground tunnels to make it outside the QZ. Then, came here to a safe house.” He finishes.
“Where’s Tess?” You ask.
“Stayed back. Need someone to communicate to me how the deal’s going.” You suddenly notice the radio sitting on the countertop.
“So it’s just you and me.” You mutter.
“Un-fuckin’ fortunately.” Joel replies with a hard scowl.
Your mind tries to settle now.
You’re in a home in the middle of fuck knows where. Your hope of maybe escaping is not as bright as it was in the underground compound. So you steadily resolve yourself to accept this situation. Your mother will come. She will find a way to make the deal and you’ll be back home.
When you finally glance out the window you discover you’re on the outskirts of the QZ.
Infected roam here.
“Shouldn’t we head back into the QZ?” You ask worried.
“And have you turnin’ my fuckin’ ass in? No way in hell.” Joel glares at you.
“Infected are out here.” You snap fierce.
“And you got me. Won’t need to worry ‘bout ‘em.” He says simply.
It isn’t that reassuring, but you think of how he’s proven himself already to be rather sturdy even for his age.
“So are we just gonna wait until we hear something?”
“Yeah.” Joel answers with a deadly deadpan that refuses to leave room up for any discussion.
The space stays in a tense thickness until the radio flickers to life scaring the shit out of you.
Tess over the radio gives an update. Still no word from FEDRA. Instead she goes into discussing work with Joel.
They talk in code, use numbers and different colors to describe things. But at one point they let the code slip. You piece it together easily. They work with FEDRA officers to get certain supplies. You knew FEDRA wasn’t squeaky clean, even argued about it with your mom. But this just solidifies the murkiness of it all.
None of them have a car or battery to give.
Joel ends up falling asleep in the chair at the tabled hands crossed over his chest. You now snoop around the place quietly. There’s an extra backpack for you as well as various contraband items still waiting to be delivered.
You silently steal one of the liquor bottles and place it stealthily in your bag.
You also unpack what’s in the bag.
The change of clothes Tess had first offered you, a few rations, a flashlight. No weapon though. You do spot flint, and that’s slightly reassuring.
The sun starts to dwindle. You need to rest. It’s obvious you’re not going anywhere for a while. So returning to the couch you close your eyes.
Then the howl of a clicker wakes you.
Instinctual primordial terror has your eyes snapping open wide in fear. Before you can move, you discover Joel beside you. Even in the dark you see a finger raised up to his lips.
Keep quiet.
You nod, sealing your lips tight.
The ominous clicking noise rattle outside the hall. You almost miss it with how loudly your heart hammers in your ears. The infected’s chatter sounds fainter as it wanders down the hallway.
You exhale through your nose, hopeful this means the infected is close to maybe leaving.
Until the radio flickers to life blaring a tune.
Horror collides into you fast. The clicker roars. Joel acts immediately raising his gun to shoot the radio silent. But it’s too late. The infected screeches, rushing down the hallway with violent steps until it rams into the door with full force. You hold back a scream.
Joel fires at the door, and a loud thud follows.
“Come on!” he snaps, scrambling to get up.
More would come. You slide the backpack on, and instantly follow Joel in a frantic rush.
Heart racing, you stay close to Joel while the two of you rush to escape out of the apartment complex. Screeches of more infected approach.
The night is dark, but Joel is surprisingly keen in maneuvering the area. He leads you into another ransacked building and holds his hand up, a silent sign to stop.
You’d be stopping here. You’re glad. All of your body feels weak. You haven’t seen a clicker up close in years. Now fear eats away at the adrenaline.
“We’ll stay here until daybreak.” Joel speaks barely above a whisper. “Get rest while ya can.”
You’re afraid to sleep now. Don’t even want to think about it.
Suddenly he says your name.
It’s the first time he’s ever said it.
He stares somberly, seriously at you. Joel must have seen whatever fear ran across your face. You fully take in the sight of him. Standing tall, his strong rifle in hand, he’s the image of unwavering determination.
“Sleep, I’ll be up.” He orders.
The distrust you hold for his man slowly is ebbing away. You know he’s simply keeping you alive for the bargain, but it’s enough for now. So you sit on the ground, try to just close your eyes and gather yourself together.
Sunlight again wakes you, and Joel continues standing watch.
He glances back to you, and with his stoic stome nature, he nods.
Time to move.
The journey through the debris and fallen memories of Boston is quiet, tense. Joel stays closer to you the entire way.
“Have another safe house just outside the edges of the city limit. We’ll be safe there.” He mutters low and you nod.
The smuggler king leads confidently. Even though you’re still petrified of infected, you take in the sights of the city. The intricate green vines, the lush landscape among the bones of civilization, it’s all a haunting sight, but you also think of how beautiful it is.
“Y’ever been outside the QZ?” Joel suddenly speaks low.
“Once,” you tell him truthfully. You had been a child then and you barely remember the journey.
“So you’ve been in Boston this entire time?” Joel asks now, sounding curious.
You have. It’s why your mom has such a high ranking within FEDRA.
“Your accent…where are you originally from?” You decide to ask questions now too, keeping the same low tone as Joel.
A part of you assumes he won’t answer or will just respond sarcastically.
“Texas.”
You’re surprised he answered.
“You're a long way from home then.”
He hums a noise that sounds like he agrees.
“Must have been a journey to get you all the way to Boston.” You note, now more curious about him.
Joel stays quiet for a moment, then replies with the lowest ‘yeah’ effectively ending the conversation.
Soon the buildings fade away. The forest creeps in denser as the suburbs approach.
At the edge of the neighborhoods, a home sits splintered off inching into the woods. It seems like the perfect secluded safe house base.
The place hasn’t been touched in a while. Leaves scatter across the title floor, and dust covers so much. You’re thankful this has more space than the small apartment. Joel immediately slings his backpack off then opens a door leading down to a basement. You follow him.
“Don’t fuckin’ follow me.” He snips, yet you stay behind him. He doesn’t stop you.
Instead Joel flickers on many camping lanterns and illuminates the basement. The stockpile here is barren, hardly any weapons or canned goods. Of course a radio sits on the table. Joel flickers to life, but no one answers when he sends his Morse code clicks. His face grows dark with worry.
“Please get me if you hear anything from my mom.” You finally say quietly.
“Yeah, will do.” Joel agrees somber.
It’s enough for now.
Two days pass. No sounds come from the radio. You and Joel walk around each other on egg shells and rarely speak. It’s suffocating. So you rummage around the house to find something to do, anything.
You find a deck of cards and it feels like a gift from above.
Quietly in the living room, you set up a lone game of solitaire on the coffee table. Or patience, as your mom loved to call it when she taught you how to play. Seems perfect to play now. You flip through the cards, placing them at the correct spots and columns.
“Solitaire?” Joel’s voice surprises you. But what shocks you even more is him moving to sit on the floor.
“You play?” You question.
“Not in a while, play other card games like poker or black jack.”
“I play blackjack.” You perk up, and Joel’s eyebrows rise slightly shocked.
You hand him the deck, cleaning up the rest of the cards and start a new game with him.
The game is tense at first, like you and him are still trying to navigate the thick tension. You peek at your cards and he glances at his.
He wins the first game, but now you’re determined.
Eventually you and him get sucked into playing. So many matches pass that when you win Joel pouts, throwing his cards down.
You burst out laughing. It feels like it’s been so long since you’ve laughed, and it’s freeing.
“You’re a sore loser.” You tease.
“I ain’t.” Joel rumbles back, scowling harder.
“Mhm, yeah sure. There’s a candyland box nearby I can get to prove you are.” You surprisingly joke, buoyant.
Joel shakes his head.
“I’ll show ya who’s a sore fuckin’ loser when I beat your ass at poker.”
“I don’t know how to play poker. Go Fish or nothing else.” You shrug.
Then, Joel snorts. It’s not a laugh, not even anything special, but it eases the strain among you and him even more. He starts shuffling the deck and hands out the cards to you.
With the most stern of voices, so seriously Joel, he asks if you have any sevens.
You laugh into your hand.
“I’m being fuckin’ serious!” He snaps.
You laugh even harder.
In this fucked up moment, in this murky situation, this brightens your soul.
A week passes.
Over the radio you hear Tess tell Joel flat out how heavy it’s gotten in the city.
“The fucking fireflies…FEDRA, everything, it’s gotten fucking insane… we might not get the car, or even the fucking battery Joel. We need to think of a plan b.”
Your stomach twists sick. Where was your mom? And what would happen if they decide you’re not worth the hassle anymore.
Shakily you head into the bathroom and sob into your hands trying to stay as quiet as you can.
Soon you’re a shell of yourself.
When you step back outside however, you’re resolved. Instead of the basement, Joel now waits in the kitchen, and his eyes widen seeing you.
“What’s wrong?” His voice picks up with a wind of worry.
“Joel.” You begin calmly and somber. “Be honest with me…”
You ask him the question that’s been haunting you.
What will become of you if FEDRA doesn’t hold up their bargain? If even your mom can’t follow through?
“Will…you get rid of me?” You speak soft, without even having to divulge more, but the festering rotting truth lies under your words.
The silence feels sharpened.
Joel quietly speaks first.
“No. Won’t do that to ya.” He mutters.
You don’t know if he’s lying or telling the truth.
You and Joel simply stare at each other. So much hangs tangled and barbed between you and him.
All you can do is simply nod. You swear his eyes soften for just a moment.
Another week passes. No signs or commotion from FEDRA. It’s beginning to feel like you’re in a room slowly filling with water, like you’re on borrowed time.
But you manage to pass the days with Joel through more card games. You try playing Pictionary with him, but his attempt at drawing a dog looks like a camel, and you laugh so hard at how badly he pouts.
It’s becoming amicable now, you and him.
But supplies are running low. Joel doesn’t sugar coat that harsh truth.
“There’s another stop we can go to from here, but I’m hoping we won’t need to.” He’s still waiting, hoping for FEDRA to answer.
Eventually the night settles in, and you’re surprised he joins you for another card game.
Right now you and him try another game of poker. You’ve come to learn you are not very good, which is also why you think Joel likes playing it knowing he wins.
“So how does a Texan far from home become the king of smugglers?” You try to ease the air by pushing more conversation with him.
“Just something that happened honestly,” Joel mutters, passing out the weathered cards.
“Got involved with my brother back when we started traveling outta Texas and just…never stopped.” He reveals.
“Your brother, he’s the one you’re looking for…” You remember.
“Yeah.” Joel agrees low.
“I hope you find him.” Gathering the cards dealt to you, you mean those words.
“Thanks…hope we can get ya back home.” A hint of sincerity leaks into Joel's voice and you appreciate that.
You’re about to deal your hand when rustling comes from outside. Glancing out the window, you try to find something among the dark shadows.
“What?” Joel asks fast and low.
“I don’t know… thought I heard something.” You mumble.
In that same breath, bullets fly through the window, shattering everything. The moment unfolds in a flurry of chaos.
“Raiders!” Joel shouts while you and him try to stay low. You crawl towards your bag.
The door gets kicked in and your heart races fast. Even as you and Joel scramble to maybe get down to the basement it's hard with the commotion rushing in.
Joel is swift with his gun, but the raiders keep coming.
Windows shatter further in the back of the house. They’re infesting. Time to leave. It’s a rapid rush to get outside. Before running into the woods, you stop to rummage in your bag finally remembering something important.
“The fuck are ya doing?!” Joel screams with a snarl.
You act fast. You rip a piece of your shirt edge, and grab the alcohol you stole along with the flint.
“Shit.” Joel breathes out realizing what you’re doing.
You’ve seen plenty of these, just never believed you’d ever make one.
Cloth in the liquid, Joel moves to help you light the flint.
Then when fire sparks catches onto the strip of clothing you stand up.
The adrenaline sets you ablaze. You throw the bottle with all your might. It manages to collide against the house’s porch. Soon the world is engulfed in a vibrant orange flame, a hellfire right before you.
Screams of raiders mix with the flames.
“Come on.” Joel urges and grabs your hand.
A rush of footsteps comes and it’s too late to react.
Something hard hits the side of your face. You cry in pain falling to the ground. The world spins on itself. Everything is disoriented. Your face throbs so bad, and you cough through the tears stinging your eyes. The sound of Joel firing off his gun again comes.
Then his hands steady you up.
“Y’okay darlin’?” He asks frantic and you nod, tired.
“Let’s go.” Joel grabs your hand again. This time don’t let it go.
Even arriving at the abandoned gas station deemed safe to stay, you don’t let his hand go. He doesn’t yell at you about it.
Instead Joel sits besides you, flush against your side.
Against the shadowed darkness of the old building, you hold his hand firm in his and he doesn’t let go either.
You wake up first this time and find your head slumped against Joel’s shoulder, resting against him now. His head also rests on top of yours.
This is new.
But then again, so was the term he used for you. You wonder if you just imagined it.
Unlike now, this is very real. You’ve never been this close to him, can smell the faintest traces of him, musky and dark. He snores. His hair tickles against your head, but you don’t want to move.
If anything you close your eyes again hoping for a few more minutes of peace. Joel eventually shifts, waking you both up. Nothing is said about the sleeping positions.
Then he turns to you, and his face falls.
Immediately Joel moves closer. Delicately one of his hands moves to your chin to examine your cheek.
“Does it hurt?” He asks gently and you shake your head.
Not as much. You know there’s probably an ugly bruise, but it could be worse. You’re grateful this is all you have.
“You should’ve seen the other guy.” You darkly joke.
Joel scoffs a small noise, maybe the echo of a laugh.
“So… Should I be worried about anything else you might’ve stolen?” His dry tone doesn’t sound upset.
You promise the bottle is all you took.
Joel hums, nodding.
“You continue to keep surprisin’ me.” His words are softer than he’s ever sounded
Now you realize, Joel is closer than ever before too. His face intensely scowled up now stares directly at you.
You drink in the sight of the king of the smugglers this close. The sun spots on his face, the age lines along his gorgeous features, it’s hard to deny how stunning he is.
After yesterday night it’s like you’re reminded raw and fierce how dangerous, but gorgeous of a man Joel is.
You think of the party you first met Joel. You remember thinking how you felt the remnants of safety, of protection that Joel showed then.
You should hate him. You wouldn’t be in these situations if it wasn’t for him. But when you ask yourself if you would rather be in the QZ, the truth is a distorted answer you might not be ready to face.
Without a word Joel whips around and moves to sling his backpack on better.
“Come on, let’s head out.” He announces.
You stay close to his side.
You expected another silent journey. However, the warmth of the day, the stretch of houses blurring more into the woods brings Joel out of his shell.
He talks about the Texas heat and how it used to be scorching. Interestingly points out different housing structures, and you learn he used to work as a contractor. Joel even asks about your job working at the school.
“It’s a job.” You say a bit standoffish.
“You don’t like it.” Joel sees right through you instantly.
“My mom likes it.” It’s safe, secure, stable and away from any harm and under the watch of FEDRA.
“What d’ya want to do then?” Joel asks surprisingly patient.
You pause momentarily, and the wind blows across your face.
It’s such a simple silly dream you hold in your heart…
Having your own house, enjoying peace, simply embracing living day to day without any worry about what to do or if your mom would approve.
“To simply be.” You answer. It’s enough for Joel, and you swear you see a faint grin tugging his lips.
The trail transforms into a serene sight, and you’re in awe of the beautiful landscape.
You should be scared that you’re walking away more and more from the QZ, even trusting Joel to follow him. But you’re not. The stretching trees untouched by the city, the edges of summer still peeking through the greenery, it's beautiful.
And getting hear Joel open up more, means more than you care to admit. He talks about this one mix up a couple of his guys made where they mistook baby milk formula powder for cocaine.
“Not Mister Scary Lord of the underworld getting upset over that.” You tease, and it almost feels like flirting.
Joel rolls his eyes. It adds a glowing playfulness to him, like seeing a small glimpse of the man he was before the world ended.
The further from the QZ you go, the deeper and deeper you’re drawn into this endless maze of a man that is Joel.
(iv)
You never believed a place like Bill and Frank’s existed.
Their own personal town is otherworldly. They, mainly Frank, welcome you with warm and glimmering hospitality. They’re both older, slightly around Joel’s age.
“So, what’s a lovely thing like you doing with Joel?” Frank asks jokingly.
“Oh, I’m just a hostage.” You sleepily grin. Frank’s face falls while Bill barks a laugh.
It’s easy to melt into this new world with these two and Joel. You never expected him to have friends like this, and it’s interesting uncovering more facets of him.
Bill barks for you not snoop, but Frank winks reassuringly to make yourself at home. The hot shower is an oasis, and the comfortable bed becomes a cloud.
Well rested, the next day you wander the town. You stay out until it’s dark. No infected, no raiders, no fireflies or no worries… just simply you and the beautiful night sky above.
“Still not payin’ attention to where you’re goin’.” Joel’s voice flutters in.
Along the side of the street he looks dreamy under the soft dark night.
“Can’t help it,” you truthfully say, glancing back up. The stars are too lovely not to admire.
You end up wandering closer to Joel or maybe he walks towards you. It’s too hard to tell.
“You can never see the stars this bright even at the QZ.” You return to admire the stars even with Joel besides you.
If your mom just knew how far you were.
Joel snorts, and you realize you spoke those words aloud. Even though you’re a bit embarrassed you simply shrug.
“It’s true.” You agree.
“Seems like she’s kinda…” Joel trails off.
“Controlling?” You finish, and he nods.
You understand why. She’s seen horrors, lost so much. But you’re an adult, a fully grown one and you’ve seen a fair share of hardships too. You just want to be understanding both to her, and to yourself.
You even explain this to Joel.
“You’re good, maybe too kind.” Joel mutters and you now intrigued turn to him. His eyes twinkle in the dark night more than they ever have. “Don’t seem to see the bad in people.”
Maybe you do. Maybe you understand that people in this world contain fuzzy and hard to decipher multitudes now.
Joel snorts when you tell him that.
“Y’know you’ve been traveling with a one of FEDRA’s top bad guys this whole entire time right?”
You know. Joel even calls himself a thief. But he doesn’t seem as evil as you believed him to be.
Glancing at him, the way the darkness should bring out his shadows. It instead illuminates him like a faint star. You think someone this man can’t be fully evil. Or maybe you’re not as good, blooming and unfolding in the mud to reveal your true nature.
You and Joel simply walk back to Bill and Frank’s in silence.
The radio also stays silent another week.
You’re worried about overstaying your welcome, especially with how hard Bill glares at you like you’re a pest. Frank however, eagerly includes you in so many of his projects and errands.
“Not as young as I used to be.” He teases while tending to one of the gardens, and you readily help as much as you can.
You stare in awe at all the beautiful lush vegetables and plants. There’s even a couple of fruit trees.
“Joel always asks for fruit when he comes for trades.” Frank chuckles.
You never would have expected Bill and Frank to be a part of Joel’s team.
“I know, we don’t seem like the type, or maybe I don’t seem like the type to be helping smugglers.” Frank comments teasing, as if he read your mind.
You quickly stammer out that you don’t mind.
“This world, it’s not as black and white as we think it is. Surviving an apocalypse really does paint everything in a murky gray. Sometimes, it’s okay to just accept that.” Frank explains.
You’re slowly starting to agree more and more with that.
“I know…there’s…a delicate situation going on between you and Joel.” Frank speaks cautiously.
“But I want you to know…that if this is serious, and you don’t feel comfortable with Joel or truly want to go return home, there’s ways we could figure it out.” His tone is serious, truthful and sincere.
His words warm you.
But you swallow hard. In the watch of the peaceful yard you reveal a shadowed truth that’s been building in you.
You don’t know if you want to go back. You know you will have to if FEDRA and your mom honor the trade. But you’re dreading returning to your life under the eyes of the decaying QZ streets, FEDRA, your mother…
And even if you do return there, you can’t imagine going without Joel.
“I just want to make sure he’s safe.” You add quietly.
“You probably think I sound awful or out of my mind.” Then you laugh hollow.
Frank doesn’t reply immediately. You wait for him to judge you.
“I don’t think that at all.” His hand gently pats yours. “I think you’re actually really brave being so honest.”
That brings a thickness in your throat. Frank grins warmly at you, squeezes your hand comfortingly. You soak up his kindness like a flower bud in the sunlight.
However, another day passes with no noise among the picturesque world.
At breakfast you try holding back your laughter while Bill and Frankie aruge over the Wizard of Oz.
Joel, who surprisingly slept in late, emerges to take a seat at the table.
Him and Bill immediately jump into discussion about smuggling routes and new supplies. Frank slowly slips out to the kitchen.
“What day is it?” Joel asks.
Bill simply tells it to Joel, but it’s like a switch is flipped on.
He shoots up out of his chair, doesn’t even care that it topples over or that he slams into the table knocking everything. Bill yells at him fiercely. But Joel storms out of the room leaving everyone in his aftermath.
“What happened?” Frank asks, emerging back into the dining room.
“Joel, being fucking Joel.” Bill sneers.
Frank ignores his husband and turns to you. Explaining what happened, his lovely face frowns instant.
“Oh…oh I forgot about today.” He mutters.
You ask what today means. Frank slides closer to you with his eyes low.
“If I remember right…Today’s Sarah’s birthday.” He answers.
Confusion bubbles up, and you ask who Sarah is.
Frank’s face contorts in shock.
“Sarah…she’s Joel’s daughter that passed away.”
Those words take your breath away and you feel your world tilt on its axis.
Joel was a dad. Joel had a daughter.
You never would have expected. Frank must see the look in your eyes now as he places a hand on your shoulder.
“He doesn’t talk about her much. It’s not your fault you didn’t know.”
You’re left haunted by it all though.
Eventually you get the confidence and bravery enough to find Joel.
Walking around the vacant neighbor, you eventually spot him sitting on the porch step of one of the homes.
“Fuck you doin’ here?” He snaps, but there’s no malice in his voice, only a hollowness.
Standing besides him, you inhale deep.
“My big sister was infected on outbreak day.” You begin.
It happened after school when your mom was talking with your neighbor outside your home. You were still so little, barely remember pieces of it.
But the memories you have are sharp.
You’re in the kitchen, laughing at something your sister says. Suddenly she starts twitching. Then your world ended. You still hear her snarls sometimes, still taste the terror when she tried biting you and how you prayed it was just a game, until the screams of your mom came. It’s simply been you and her ever since.
Joel’s face finally turns to you and his eyes are wide, glossy obsidian gems and so open, so unlike Joel. Yet it’s like you’re seeing a true layer of him.
“I’m so sorry about your daughter Joel. That pain of loss never really leaves and I get it.” You carry your big sister’s ghost with you now.
Joel doesn’t say anything, instead clenches his jaw and blinks away the shimmering gloss reflecting in his eyes.
“It ain’t the same.” He suddenly snaps back. “You never felt the pain of losin’ a child.”
You feel insulted.
“Loss is still a loss Joel. Don’t you dare say my hurt is less than yours. What would your daughter say?” You snap back.
You know that’s not a kind thing to say. It galvanizes Joel. He bolts up and becomes a terrifying looming force that pierces you where you stand.
His voice silence is deadly, slices through you.
There’s so much you want to say to hurt him, but what good will it do. You simply blink away tears and walk away, leaving Joel to his ache as you try to quell yours.
Trying to settle your emotions, you end up walking around the ghost town and spot various glorious wildflowers, blooms so vibrantly colorful. You grab as many as you can.
Back at the house, Frank brightens immediately seeing the flowers in your hands.
“I got just the vase for them!”
Frank asks if you picked these for yourself and you shake your head.
“For those who have passed, and for Sarah.” Your answer.
Frank doesn’t say anything but instead nods, a silent understanding.
You head back to the guest room to try taking a nap. You accidentally left the door open partially, and soon enough Joel’s arrival lumbers into the grand home.
“Bill get those for you?” He notices the flowers.
Frank snorts. “You know Bill wouldn’t.”
He instead clarifies you did.
“For today…for Sarah.” Frank then adds.
Joel is quiet. You close your eyes and now drift into the flickering world between falling asleep and being aware.
You swear you faintly hear the door creak open more, catch the faint smell of cedar, and feel delicate but callous fingers run across your face.
But when you open your eyes, no one is in the room.
It’s like nothing happened between you or Joel the next morning. He even helps you and Frank outside harvesting some of the ripe new fruit.
“Can't handle Bill’s grumpy ass anymore.” Joel explains.
“Two grumpies together might just be too much.” You tease. Joel glares dully at you. Frank snickers amused.
You perk up bright seeing the lovely apples on the tree.
“Go ahead! Try one!” Frank eagerly urges and you do.
You haven’t had fresh apples in years. Your eyes close in bliss tasting sweet heaven and you munch away.
Suddenly a thick thumb runs against your cheek and your eyes snap open.
“Sorry. Got some on your cheek.” Joel clarifies drawing his hand away.
He suddenly draws it into his mouth to have a taste. You feel a bit dizzy but in a way that makes your stomach flip.
Joel’s eyes go wide, momentarily realizing what he did. Without another word, he bolts.
You and Frank are left staring at each other stunned.
The rest of the day Joel stays glued to the radio in Bill’s workshop.
Later that night your fingers crawl silently under the sheets, under your underwear, and you imagine what Joel would feel like. This man that’s taken you away from your home - you should feel guilty and ashamed, even horrified at this. But instead you only find an ache for more for his fingers to replace yours.
But even among the decadent desires you indulge in more and more…
Another week passes.
You and Joel share a somberness, slowly facing the harsh truth.
You may not be returning home.
“I want us to have a nice dinner tonight!” Frank must sense it too because he declares a bright order.
“So that means new outfits and everyone taking a good shower!” Frank insists proudly showing you to the clothing boutique the town has.
You end up grabbing the softest looking sundress. It’s delicate, fits comfortably on you and even makes you feel brand new.
Especially after taking another warm shower with the homemade lavender soap Frank gave you as another gift. Bill seems to be warming up to you. He even makes a dull joke about you taking a shorter shower than Joel.
When Joel does emerge from the shower, something shifts in you. His wet slicked back hair highlights all his silver streaks. In the new button up shirt Frank shoved at him and ordered him to wear, he’s gorgeous.
The terrifying ruler of a smuggling empire, now just a man who seems almost embarrassed, fidgets because you stare at him so directly.
Dinner is thankfully wonderful.
At some point you realize the role of hostage, of someone kidnapped, doesn’t feel so barbed. You now roam freely without any fear. Laugh warmly at the stories Frank tells that makes Bill scoff and Joel roll his eyes.
You insist on cleaning up to let Bill and Frank enjoy the nice evening to themselves.
In the kitchen you gather the plates until the door creaks open behind.
“Needed to get away from Bill’s god damn glarin’ st me being the third wheel.” Joel huffs.
Smirking, you find Joel effortlessly begins putting away dishes, helping.
It’s peaceful. In another life you wonder if this could have been a regular evening, in a house you owned…with someone you cared for.
Someone who you hate looks eerily like Joel.
You shift to go grab something just as he moves, and the two of you gently collide. It’s nothing extreme, but Joel’s hand moves to steady you against your lower back.
“Sorry.” He mutters, and your eyes flicker to him. He’s close again. So close you can almost smell the rosemary and pine soap among a scent so deeply Joel. He doesn't move yet. Neither do you.
That’s when you catch it, Joel’s deep rust eyes glance away from your gaze and towards your lips.
You wonder if maybe you’re seeing things, or have something on your face. But his hand against your back feels warm, steady, like you never want it to leave. His face ever so slightly begins to pull closer towards you.
You don’t want this to stop.
But Bills footsteps clamor to the kitchen. It electrifies both you and Joel causing him to scurry out of the kitchen.
That night you’re unable to sleep.
Frank always offered his collection of books for you to browse through. You decide to glance around and hope something sparks your interest.
That’s when a muffled groan floats out into the hallway.
Curiosity and a hint of worry has you walking back towards the rooms.
A choked out sigh comes from Joel’s room and the world melts away.
You need to go back to your room, even head back to the living room.
But you instead lean closer and find the door is slightly cracked like Joel thought he closed it but didn’t.
You faintly hear it, the sound of him jerking off. His soft sighs, his hand rubbing out his cock, it makes your mouth dry and water at the same time.
You’re no better than a creepy pervert, but you can’t help it.
Joel’s hand speeds up faster and now your wet core begs for attention already.
Then his climax hits with a deep loud groan, and it’s delicious.
You shift trying to quell the heat crawling all over your body.
But Joel sighs.
And he says your name.
It’s clear, steals your breath.
Maybe it’s been this recent journey that’s reminded you how short this life is… but whatever galvanized energy it is, it surges through you to move and push into Joel’s room.
Oh he’s a sight.
Your mouth waters seeing his cock, thick, beautiful and messy before it’s covered by the blanket.
Joel scrambles up petrified. “What the fuck y’doing here?!”
“You said my name,” you whisper slowly creeping towards him while shutting the door behind you.
“You’re hearin’ shit.” He barks low, angry and harsh.
You swallow hard.
“I think about you too… whenever I touch myself.” You admit barely above a whisper.
Joel’s eyebrows fly up to his hairline, but immediately he coughs as if he got punched.
“Go back to your room.” He urges, but it’s not persistent. You shake your head no, and now arrive against the side of his bed.
“We… you…this shouldn’t be happenin’.” He urges.
“You say you’re a thief, that you’re the bad guy here,” you mutter posessed. “Maybe I am too.”
“Darlin’” Joel breathes out that sacred term, the one you’ve prayed to hear again.
Confidence surges through you more toxic than any other poison.
“Maybe I wanna take for once,” you whisper, moving onto the bed. Your eyes glance to the wet white sticky mess against Joel’s stomach and his hand that he didn’t cover.
Your mouth aches to taste him.
So flickering your gaze to Joel, it’s a cautious moment and what you’re about to do can fall apart in a minute. But your hand moves delicately, cautious. Your eyes stay on Joel, waiting for him to tell you no or react.
But he doesn’t.
You grab his cum covered hand still keeping your eyes on him. Until you glance down at his hand, his calloused beautiful large hand.
He still hasn’t pulled away or made a noise to stop you.
Tentatively you lick up his fingers, tasting his release.
“Fuck!” Joel barks out a harsh hiss.
You’re worried he’s going to yank his hand away, but he doesn’t. He instead sits up more like he’s been electrocuted.
It’s enough to let you indulge now.
So you draw his fingers into your mouth.
They’re so large. The salty taste of his cum and the taste of his skin on your tongue makes your eyes close as you clean his fingers.
“Fuckin’ shit, baby.” You want to hear him say those words over and over, want to cherish how wrecked his voice breaks.
Now, very slowly, Joel’s fingers move in your mouth and you moan. He traces your teeth, drags the meat of his fingers across your tongue and plunges deeper into your mouth.
Your eyes roll back, and on instinct you start sucking.
“Yeah darlin’ yeah.” Joe whispers hoarsely, and you want to get drunk on him.
Steady, his fingers plunge in and out, fucking your mouth as you become putty in his hold. His other hand now runs up your thigh, under the edge of your dress.
“Want you so bad Joel.” Even with his fingers in your mouth you whimper out those words maybe mainly to yourself, maybe thinking this is just a dream.
But the way Joel surges up, yanks his hand out of your mouth to clutch your face, and he kisses you like a parched man…
This feels too good to be a dream.
You melt into it, into Joel, greedily stealing all he gives you. Just as you welcome him to steal all he wants from you, and you readily give him everything. No worries about anything else, it’s simply you and him.
When Joel slides into you, deep and wide, when his breath tickles the heat of your skin, you taste the essence of him all around - the world feels reborn.
Joel however, is slightly more reluctant.
“M’too old for you.” He argues after the second night you crawl into his room.
“You think I care?” I simply say running your fingers against his warm chest.
“You should.”
Well you don’t and you tell him that.
Then the dark doubt creeps in.
Because there are other things you should care about.
“Are you doing this…”
Just to be cruel, to maybe even control you.
Joel sits up holding your hand against his chest. Your eyes met his. There’s steeled sincerity in his eyes as he shakes his head.
“No… hate that I wanted you from the start, before all this.” At the party. That feels like ages ago.
You can’t help but ask him why, why you.
He sighs, and his thumb strokes your hand.
“Saw you when ya first walked in. You laughed at something your friend said. It was so loud, so fuckin’ genuine.”
You’re about to apologize, embarrassed, at how loud you laugh until Joel continues.
“Knew you were something fierce, something beautiful. I was gone the minute you smashed that god damn drink in that guy's face.”
He doesn’t have to say anything else. So much clouds the room and it feels thick, but it’s like the thickness of a misty morning fog you want to get lost in. You kiss him tenderly, as if you have all the time in the world.
After this a new shift comes between you and Joel. His hands always seem to be on you, gently touching your arm or grazing past you closer. After your nights with him, hickies paint your thighs and you admire them in the morning.
In the dark, Joel tells you more about Tommy, about the plan he has for finding his brother. Even sometimes he reveals bits and pieces about Sarah.
You soak in every moment you can with him. Joel even stays a full day away from the radio helping Bill renovating one of the sheds. It’s a gift watching Joel work with his hands and tools, like watching the shadow of a past still existing in him.
Your heart becomes a treasure chest holding all these moments.
But something darker still rots in you.
FEDRA still remains silent.
(v)
Summer winds down. Cooler air settles in the town, and you happily enjoy sitting on the porch more and more.
You’d been eyeing the pomegranate for a few days. Now after Frank happily told you to enjoy, you excitedly and greedily cut into it. Joel even showed you how to earlier.
Currently you sit on the porch enjoying the soft breeze. Frank sits besides you watching Bill work on a project. You laugh at how affectionate the two are even while bickering.
Scooping out a couple of the pomegranate seeds, their beautiful ruby color stains your finger. They taste of a sweetness you never want to leave. Boots approach from behind.
“Joel! Come, sit. Enjoy the nice early autumn weather.” Frank calls and you turn to grin at him.
“FEDRA finally got in contact.” Joel’s words pop the air.
Everything stills.
When you turn towards Joel, the somber stare on his face already reveals the answer.
FEDRA denied the exchange.
The rest of the pomegranate sits uneaten on the porch.
You sit in Joel’s room quietly for what feels like years. The tears don’t even come anymore.
“She can stay here! She’d be a welcomed addition” Frank urges from the living room. “We’ve appreciated all the extra help around here.”
“No. Take her back.” Bill interjects flat.
Frank shushes his husband.
The conversation becomes low, muffled, and you’re too tired to even try and listen. You instead curl into Joel’s pillow, and let sleep take you.
A callous hand gently stroking your cheeks wakes you. The low early evening light bathes Joel glorious, and you faintly smell wine Joel must have had.
“You gonna get rid of me now?” You mumble hollow.
Joel shakes his head no.
“Too late for that.” He says with the faintest hint of a crooked grin. “Told ya, I’m head smuggler for a fuckin’ reason, like to keep what’s mine close.”
You place your hand over his and squeeze it tight. But the tears manage to return.
“What’s gonna happen now?” While you ask, your voice breaks.
Joel exhales.
“Don’t know.” He says truthfully.
You’re grateful he’s being honest. Joel’s dark autumn eyes glance away.
“I know we’ll manage, find a car, get Tommy.” He nods to himself.
“But…” he adds with his voice trailing off.
“Don’t wanna think about you leaving,” Joel admits with the lowest rumble.
“Can’t fuckin’ handle it… thinkin’ about not knowin’ how you’re doing, not seeing you…” he shakes his head.
“It’s fuck up. I know it’s god damn fucked up... If you want me to take you back to the QZ, I’ll do it. If you wanna just stay here, I’d let ya.” Joel’s voice sounds strained, almost debris filled with so many emotions begging to get out.
You slide your hands around him, and he draws you closer. The world might be crumbling again all around you, but he feels like a steady rock amongst it all.
“I don’t wanna leave, don’t wanna leave you.” You whimper out the truth.
Joel holds you tighter into his strong warm embrace.
That night you fuck Joel like it’s the last time you’ll ever see him, and a grim darkness seeping in your mind whispers it might be.
You want every piece of him. So when you open your mouth wide, without any question, Joel runs his thumb across your bottom lip and spits into your mouth. You greedily swallow.
What surprises you is when you’re seated in Joel’s lap, slowly grinding up and down on his thick cock, he weakly opens his mouth as well.
Tenderly stroking his cheek, you gently lean down and let the spit drip from your mouth into his. You feel drunk watching Joel’s eyes roll back as he swallows.
Instead of feral roughness, or a devouring passion, it’s tender, makes your heart swell. Joel’s hands map you out like you’re a cherished rare gem.
In his arms, in the quiet stillness of the room, your heart begs for weeds to start growing around you.
(vi)
From a glance out the window, the pumpkins seem to be flourishing beautifully. They’re your first big vegetables you’re growing, with Bill’s supervision of course. But you’re proud of the progress nonetheless.
You’re finishing cleaning the last bit of dishes from breakfast when a sturdy arm slides around you from behind.
For someone so grumpy, Joel is surprisingly and secretly a cuddly creature. His wonderful nose burrows into the side of your face.
“Wanna work on the kitchen today,” he mutters.
The old house across the street from Bill and Frank’s has become the new project. While you still stay with Bill and Frank, your hope is to eventually make that empty house a home.
The autumn air invigorates you as you go to visit Frank in his sunroom.
“Will you be okay here by yourself?” You ask him gently.
Frank snorts. “You and Bill both, such worrywarts.”
Frank’s been moving slower, coughing more. It tugs at your heart. Over the radio you now even ask Tess if there’s other medication options for him to try.
You’ve grown to care about him, even grouchy Bill and Tess who even seems to warm up to you now.
It’s your own carved out universe.
Frank good naturedly pats your hand, reassuring you he’ll be fine. With a squeeze to his shoulder and a warm goodbye, you head across the street.
Of course Joel takes charge, and it’s hard not to jump his bones seeing how effortlessly he takes to fixing up this house.
The night you decided to stay here, Joel slid you a paper and pen.
“Draw me your dream house.” He told you gruffy.
He kept that very poor drawing. It’s what guides the renovations. The house is smaller than Bill and Frank’s but to you, it’s a perfect size.
“You know I can do it myself, make Bill work too.” Joel had told you when you first showed up to help.
“I know, but I wanna help. Wanna know my elbow grease went into everything too.” You told Joel with a grin.
He didn’t shoo you away after that. Now you get to help around when you can. The sanded cabinets and freshly painted walls, all fruits of your labor and you’re excited, proud, seeing the house come together. It’s breathing life into his dusty space, and you cherish it.
Eventually you head back to Bill and Frank’s.
Frank calls to you. “The radio came on.”
With Joel throwing himself into fixing up the house, interestingly enough you’ve become his stand in. It’s how you and Tess slowly began bonding. You’ve told her FEDRA routes and patrol changes and she’s in turn gossiped about what’s been happening in Boston.
You miss it often, but the peace of walking to visit your pumpkins, to helping Frank at breakfast, of having Joel in your bed…it’s like a new breath in your lungs.
“Hey.” You greet Tess.
She says your name, somber and you still.
“Your mom…she finally got in contact with us.”
You inhale shakily. A part of you had wondered if your mom would do something like this.
Finally managing to get a hold of a battery, your mom is offering to trade it for you.
A wave of fear does grip you. You don’t want to leave, don’t want to go back. But you also miss her dearly.
When Joel returns, beautifully coated in sweat and saw dust, he’s like a construction god. But seeing your face, he instantly understands something’s up.
In the seclusion of your room, you tell Joel you’ll return to Boston, and his eyes become moons.
“You don’t have to go back.” Joel whispers to you later that night. “Can say we want more.”
You shake your head.
Your mom has been through enough, and Joel needs this.
“You need to find Tommy.”
His hand curls against your face holding your cheek so precious. “We’ll find another battery, or hell I’ll take one of Bill’s. Don’t want ya feeling like you’re forced to go back.”
This has all been out of your control and now, you have a say.
You’ll return with Joel, but you won’t be fully returning to your life in Boston either. You’ll exist between these two worlds now, visiting your mom and primarily staying with Joel.
Your mom won’t be happy about this, you can almost hear her fury already. But this is what you want. It’s the journey your path will take.
“Y’okay with this?” Joel suddenly asks before leaving the gate to the town. His eyes search yours. “You don’t have to do this, especially for me.”
You understand what he means, but this is for you.
Gently you draw Joel towards you and kiss him soft.
With the smuggler king, you walk firmly into the sunlight. The early autumn breeze gently guides you forward.

The clench of your jaw and the way you slump into the dusty cushions of the Wheeler's old couch is telltale. Steve's side aches when your hand curls over your own ribs, the fabric of your band tee wet and sticky beneath your fingers. Nancy, Robin, and Eddie filter through the thickly fogged rooms, waving their flashlights up the steps and walls in slow circles. He watches the ashen air fill your lungs, the realization splintering your face, and you'd scramble to the bathroom if you could get up.
You glance up to find he's watching you.
"Steve?" you squeak. And tears spill over the rims of your eyes, down your cheeks, wetting the corner of your mouth and the column of your throat.
"Woah, woah," he huffs, skidding to his knees at your feet and winding his fingers around your wobbly wrist, uncertainty making you ache and hyperventilate even with his soft brown eyes honeyed over the blood like antibiotic. "Hey, eyes on me, sunshine, look at me."
But you're flickering between your soaked shirt and the delicate slope of his nose, between your scrape and the forgiveness he harbors in his slumped shoulders.
"There you go," he says, "can I...?"
You nod. Lifting your arms, it hurts. Like the skin was trying to heal just to be stretched apart again. You hiss, and he cradles your wrist back down.
"Ooh, careful, honey, don't push yourself. You've been hurt enough for one night."
"Is it bad? Steve," you cry, and he looks up to find your chin wobbling. It breaks his heart. "Steve, please, is it bad?"
"No. No, honey. It's alright." But the panic sets in around your eyes, wrinkling your forehead as blood trickles across your knuckle.
"How bad is it? Fffuck, it's bad, isn't it?" There's a maroon pool, slipping through the hardwood cracks beneath the tangle of your fingers and his.
"No, c'mon, you're fine. You're good," he huffs. Your eyes slink closed out of exhaustion or fear or the fact that it's so easy. "Baby, keep your eyes open, please. I'll go find a first aid kit. Promise me you'll keep 'em open 'till I'm back."
You frown, and his heart races. You were supposed to be the one to make it out. Back to reality. You were supposed to be his forever in the real world. Not just in this fucked up, pitch black underworld. Someone must be playing a trick on him. He's gonna wake up tomorrow to the sun hot on his face and you smiling sweetly back at him, fingers combing through his hair. He blinks hard just in case.
When he opens them, you're nodding.
"I promise." It sounds so weak dribbling from your cracked lips. Steve wipes the dirt from your jaw before darting to the lower level bathroom.
He roots desperately through the cabinets, sweat pricking across the back of his neck and his forehead and his scalp and his cheeks. God, he needs a shower and to make you better and to be home safe in his bed. With you.
You take a shaky, deep breath when he reappears with a dull, blue box under his arm. He sits beside you, wincing at the constricted noise that escapes your scratchy throat.
"What've we got... gauze, yes. Bandages, yes. Antiseptic, fuck yeah. We're in business, baby. Still with me?"
You nod weakly, hissing when he lifts your wrist into his lap. He watches your face as he rips the antiseptic wipes open.
"Gonna hurt, okay?"
A strangled sound escapes you and your head lulls onto his shoulder.
"Okay, sunshine. So proud of you, doin' great," he hums, pressing his dry lips to your damp temple. You grab for the hem of his sweater when he pats the blood from your gash. He can tell you're struggling to stay quiet, muscles tense and fingers wringing. You're tightly wound, and yet, you can feel yourself losing control.
Or maybe it's more like surrender. Relinquishment of your responsibility over your own blood. And you only do it because it's so easy to let him command it. Especially when he's so gentle in cleaning your wounds, why shouldn't you share your hurt if he's so willing to bear it.
His fingers spread neosporin over the cut, which is suddenly clean and only a little irritated. You can't help but watch him, so focused on packing the cotton and tightly sealing the wound with gauze.
"Alright?" Steve hums, and god, those brown eyes deserve their own gallery. He waits for an answer, but you're distracted and pouting at the thought of him putting your hurt before his own. Everyone has scrapes and cuts and soreness from climbing and running and falling. You saw it in his limp. And yet, he looked to you and didn't hesitate to kneel beside you and tend to your open wound. "Sunshine?"
"Yeah," you sigh, more sure than before, "feels better."
"Yeah?" he chuckles, "Feels better? That's good. I'm glad." He sighs, trying not to anticipate your reaction to the next step. He knows it's going to hurt. "Let's get you changed, okay?"
You bat your lashes up at him. That's what he was worried about. You're gonna do it, but it hurts his conscience to know how much pain the process will put you through. He stands from the couch, whipping off his sweater and shivering a little at the hellish chill.
Usually, you'd made a joke about his promiscuity. Something or other about him taking it all off. Maybe a catcall or two. He honestly misses it. The silence is deafening.
"Lift your arms."
You do, wincing and grating your teeth.
"Slowly. There you go." Once your arms are sufficiently above your head, he tugs at the soaked hem of your tee. He feels bad for cringing at the state of your side: sticky and dark red, a chunk of skin missing. Thankfully, it’s not too deep, but it still makes his heart clench.
He can’t bring himself to look in your eyes, knowing the strain and suffering he’ll find. Doe-wide and pleading as he tosses your shirt aside.
“Definitely won’t be needing that anymore,” he teases, looking at the bundled up pile of blood and cotton.
“Too bad,” you shudder, “that was my favorite.”
He grins.
With your arms still above your head, he carefully fits the rest of the gauze around your ribcage, cleaning the excess grime built up around the gash. He can tell you’re fighting to keep your eyes open as he pulls your hands through the sleeves of his damn yellow sweater. You always said it reminded you of a fuzzy bumble bee, a lingering title that he bore proudly.
He thinks you look so beautiful. Even now, streaked with dirt and ozzing blood. He thinks he'll never get used to your lazy smile and how you reach for his hand even when it hurts. His heart skips a beat feeling the warmth flood back into your fingers. "Careful, baby. Don't hurt yourself."
"Okay, Stevie," you whisper. You still have plenty of wounds that need tending to, but you're glad Steve was there for you. "Thank you."
He nods like it's all second nature. Shrugs it off like he didn't just save your life.
"Know what I'm looking forward to?" Steve says. It cuts through the fog suddenly. A welcome breath of fresh air in a conversation. "French toast."
You laugh, but stop short at the pinch of your ribs.
"Shit. Didn't mean to make you laugh. Well, I mean I did, just didn't intend for it to hurt," he says, looking a little guilty. Then, he looks over at you and his stomach drops. "Honey—"
"Sorry"—you choke a little, tears pouring hot down your cheeks, leaving clean streaks through the sheen of grime—"Sorry, I don't know why I'm crying."
"It's okay, you can cry. C'mere," he hums, resting your head back on his shoulder. He catches a tear from your cheek on his knuckle, wiping it on his collar then pushing the hair from your face.
"I'm just," you sigh. "I think I'm overwhelmed. And in pain. Obviously."
He smiles, sympathy tugging at his heartstrings when you inhale sharply.
"I know." It's mumbled against your forehead, his eyes closed and his voice hushed.
...
Eight months and a couple stitches later, the scar tissue on your forearm glistens gossamer in the sunlight as you face the push-door to the Hawkins gym. There’s a low roar coming from inside; the squeaking of shoes and blaring brass section welcomes you back. Steve had asked you to be his date to Lucas’ last game of the season. You couldn’t refuse.
Steve spots you as soon as you enter, his caramel hair sweeping soft across his forehead. Free of all the sweat and blood and weight it had that twisted spring evening. Seeing you again makes his heart soar. Knowing for a fact you’re safe and healthy. It makes him sweeter on you than he’d like to admit.
You climb the bleachers to the spot he has saved next to him. He kisses your cheek, which surprises you.
“I thought we weren’t kissing in public, yet,” you whisper. Yet, he remembers. He had agreed to that, he supposes. Only after you’d both hastily shared one outside your door one night and decided it would be best to share the rest of them where the kids couldn’t tease you incessantly. He scrunches his nose, shoving his nervous hands into his jean pockets.
“Well, you still owe me a certain yellow sweater’s worth of kisses,” he teases, “Besides, I don’t think anyone noticed.” You scowl playfully up at him, nudging his side.
“I told you you could have it back!”
“Nah. Looks better on you anyway.” He shrugs. He wouldn’t take it back if it came with a million dollars cash. It’s rightfully yours. “You know what I could go for right now?”
You tilt your head in amusement. “French toast?”
“You know me so well.”

Fic Finder
May 29th
~*~
1. Hi, I’m looking for a fic in which lan zhan and wei ying are in a relationship. They argue a lot but every argument ends with wei ying jumping in bed with lan zhan and hugging him from behind to resolve it until one day they have a really serious argument and Wei ying doesn’t come to resolve it first. They might have broken up as well, and lan zhan realized wei ying constantly made effort to resolve the arguments first and lan zhan never did.
~*~
2. Hello hello!! I have two requests this time
A) In this fic Wei Ying is the God of the Underworld. Infact everybody is a God here. And Wei Ying has a town or city built in his domain for the souls of the dead and I think the Wens lived there. Also the other Gods considered him a pariah. I remember this one scene where he comes up or goes down the stairs from heaven which leads to the Underworld after a conference with the Gods.
B) I remember only one scene from this fic. It was during the Wen Indoctrination where after Wei Ying was sent to the cell with the Dog he acts dead and Lan Wangji and Jiang Wanyin are heartbroken. But actually Wen Qing just helped Wei Ying's heart rate to slow down to convince Wen Chao of his death. I think Wei Ying wakes up right there after a few minutes or so. @yilinglaobunny
2A)
FOUND! there will come soft rains by infinite (recursion) (Not Rated, 14k, WangXian, Gods & Goddesses, Hades/Persephone AU)

4. Hello, I’m looking for a specific fic that takes place post canon. Basically it’s a short fic where Lan Zhan goes out to travel for something and while he’s gone someone upsets Wei Ying, so to get back at him Wei Ying pretends to have sex super loudly every night. Lan Zhan hears about it and rushes back and hides in the room to find out what’s going on. I think they slept together after but I don’t remember well. I read it a few years ago and all can’t find it since.
FOUND? 🔒 The Sweetest Morsel to the Mouth That Ever Was Cooked in Hell by Silvarbelle (E, 14k, WangXian)
~*~
5. Hi! There was this Wangxian fic where Lan Zhan got cursed and pushed Wei Ying away because he didn't recognize him and Wei Ying got badly hurt. Wen Qing was alive she made some sort of a healing bubble around Wei Ying for him to heal. I clearly remember she identified Wei Ying as her brother and asked Lan Qiren and Lan Xichen to keep Lan Zhan away from him. Lan Zhan was distraught after the curse wore off. Along with Sizhui and the others. Thank you!

6. Hi, I remember there being a fic but can't seem to find it : where the juniors end up in the past or a different universe where they see JGY and other cultivators in a meeting and one of JL or LY throw a weapon most probably a dagger killing JGY which makes LXC unhappy, hostile and maybe a little shocked but when he makes a move towards the juniors WangXian appear and WY tells/warns him from doing so. I remember I read it on ao3 but don't recall the chapter count apologises for the vague details but this is all that I remember so something with a similar premise or any help would be appreciated.

9. Hiya,
Looking for a modern fic where LWJ is constantly being mean to WWX, whose constantly trying to befriend him. Eventually wwx has a whole breakdown about it, and he mentions how LWJ is an asshole to him for no reason. There’s a scene mentioning wwx baking cookies for him and he thought Lwj threw it out but in reality it is revealed in the end by Lwj himself that he ate it (although he was allergic to it) and WWX says something along the lines of that’s why you missed class that Monday. Turns out LWJ just struggles with communication. I think they are neighbors or roommates I can’t remember. Hopefully someone can help.
Thank you!!
FOUND? A Marriage Story by DeviyudeThoolika (E, 38k, wangxian, NMJ/LXC, married wangxian, but there are some complications, because it’s marriage, Sex is complicated, Angst and Pining, Pining while fucking, Mature elements, Mutual Pining, HEA, Arranged Marriage, Sort Of, Misunderstandings, of epic proportions, One True Pairing, Good Sibling JC, Good Parent YZY, Fluff and Angst, in that order, Slow Burn, Angst with a Happy Ending, Everyone Loves WWX, Angst and Hurt/Comfort) or if not this one, by this author
~*~
10. I am looking for a canon era (not modern) fic where Lan Wangji was kidnapped as a child and I think he was raised in a brothel. He grows up and curses himself to be hideous so that the men who frequent the brothel don’t try to touch him. Eventually true love breaks the curse (like, WWX loves him regardless of his appearance) and I think Wangji happily reconciles with Xichen.
FOUND! Turn Left by kianspo (M, 204k, WangXian, NieLan, Canon Divergence, Fix-It of Sorts, Friends to Lovers, eventually, references to child sexual abuse, not main characters, Neurodivergent LWJ, Slow Build, Lán Family Feels, specifically, Twin Jades of Lán Feels, lwj-centric, Twin Jades of Lán Dynamics, Somebody Lives/Not Everyone Dies, Angst with Happy Ending)
~*~
11. It's been some time since the last FF I've asked but here we go again :'D I'd like to find a fic that had WangXian traveling together and LWJ's back/scars were bothering him and it worsened because of cold weather? Most likely the fic was post canon. There might have been a bath house or a hot spring involved there somewhere
Yes, LWJ knew he was traveling with WWX. No, he didn't get more scars.
did lan zhan not know it was wei ying travelling with him, and did he get more scars as time went on?
~*~
12. Hi, I would love some help locating a fic. I can't really remember a lot of the main plot since it has been a while since I read it. I believe it is a post-canon fic, but Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian had to go back to the Burial Mounds, and Wei Wuxian had to unbury his original body that was buried in the blood pool. I think. I also think that for Wei Wuxian's original body to survive, he had to wear a bracelet of some sort. I don't remember, or maybe I am confused by two different fics.
~*~
13. For the fic finder!! TIA!!
This may be a scene from a long fic but I’m not sure. Wwx is possessed by something more than resentful energy- it’s an ancient demon who wants to destroy the world. Wwx seals himself inside the cold pond cave and puts up a barrier- I guess prepared to stay there forever? Lwj somehow gets in there to stay with him, and has conversations with the demon. The demon is extremely strong, throws him around and hurts him a little. His brother and uncle are pacing outside the barrier demanding he come out. The elders want to execute wwx which is why lwj is in the cave in the first place.
It’s canon setting but I can’t remember the time line- war? No war? Wwx and lwj aren’t together yet though. I remember this fic being pretty good- I’d love to reread it!
FOUND!🔒 Breathing Firestorm by ladyshadowdrake (M, 110k, wangxian, angst, fluff, captivity, creepy WRH, no non-con, dreamsharing, politics, people making the best decisions they can, epic length, mythical creature WWX, canon-typical violence, dark, happy ending)
~*~
14. hello!! thank you for all the work you do. i've been trying to find a fic in my bookmarks/ searching for it but i just can't seem to find it unfortunately. i remember it to be an arranged marriage au? where lwj and wwx loved each other very much but upon learning that wei wuxian's tail colour (or species) meant he would not settle, miscommunication happens and just angst. it is a happy ending though, because i think that another person tells lwj that wei changze's tail colour/species meant that wwx would be loyal to him? sorry if this is too broad, thank you!
FOUND? what you have tamed by lianhua_lianzi, Senforza (E, 94k, WangXian, Animal Traits, misunderstandings (not the romcom kind that can be resolved in a 5min convo), Courting Rituals, Pining, Lan family dynamics, Drama, Fluff, Hurt/Comfort, Arranged Marriage, Wangxian break up but get back together, Eventual Happy Ending, vague biological essentialism (animal species have different mating preferences), Canon Typical Alcohol Usage, Implied Mpreg, Unresolved Sexual Tension, unintentional and eventually resolved "gaslighting", Dragon LWJ, Fox WWWX)
~*~
15. Hello! I am searching for a fic I read that I think was multiple short installments in a series on ao3. It was a war au where Wangji had presented as some kind of dragon and he was in charge of the Lan clan. Wuxian was a thief or mercenary. They had met as children and Wangji imprinted on Wuxian, but they parted ways then. They meet again on the battlefield and Wangji pulls Wuxian into his tent and is like “bathe him!” I think Wangji put a silver collar on Wuxian that Wuxian couldn’t remove on his own. There were dom/sub undertones. Any clue?
FOUND!🔒 Have him stripped, bathed, and brought to my tent by KizuKatana (E, 30k, WangXian, Dark LWJ, A/B/O, Huli-Jing WWX, powerplay/powerdynamic, dubcon (due to power dynamics), Overstimulation, Edging, Biting, Scenting, Possessiveness, LWJ Has a Big Dick, Alpha LWJ, Omega WWX, warlord, Emperor LWJ, civilian (sort of) captive (also sort of) WWX, dragon sex magic, Not traditional Chinese emperor history fully alternate reality of immortal creatures)
~*~
16. HI, thanks for all your amazing work!! You rock!! Sorry to bother, but I hope I can get an answer!! I'm looking for a story were in the future, in space, Wei Wuxian is kidnapped everyone believes him dead and is used by Jin Guangshan and I think Xue Yang to try to destroy others. I think he has an implant that has prevented him from escaping but he manages to plant bombs and asks Lan Zhan to kill him when he finds him!! Please help!! be well!! @monicaop21
FOUND! Stars bring us apart (Stars pull us together) by Sixlayerhouse (sixlayerhouse) (E, 124k, WangXian, Hurt/Comfort, (Vaguely) Star Trek AU, Canon-Typical Violence, Psychological Trauma, PTSD, Body modifications, Everyone Lives/Nobody Dies, Recovery, married!wangxian)
~*~
17. Hi, I need some help looking for a fic on ao3 I was SO SURE I had bookmarked, but apparently not. The fic is Jingyi-centric and features a drunk jingyi trying to hit on Jin Ling's uncles at a bar, I'm fairly certain Jingyi is college age and the fic mentions sizhui and wangxian near the end. It was marked as complete, and I think it was a one-shot. Sorry if it's a bit vague, but it's been a while and I'm starting to think I just made it up if it hasn't been deleted. Thank you in advance! @angrymarconi
FOUND!🔒UILF by bosgood (T, 3k, JC/NHS, LSZ & NHS, JC & JL, NHS & the juniors, ONE-SIDED LJY/NHS and LJY/NHS/JC, and mention of ONE-SIDED LJY/WWX/LWJ, LJY has the UNREQUITED hots for JL's various uncles OK, unrequited, nothing happens!, featuring reactions ranging from laughing one's ass off to fully dying inside, Humor, I love the fics where LJY and/or OYZZ is like damn JL's uncle is fine, so this is my contribution to the genre, Modern, College, Established Relationship, WWX & LWJ are LSZ's parents, JL Has a Lot of Uncles, canon-typical junior shenanigans)
~*~
18. Hey! There’s this thread fic I read a while ago, I believe it’s a “Bikini Armor” au? It’s where Knight!Lwj is meets another fellow knight (Wwx) on the road, but Wwx’s armor is magical? Basically it only visibly covers his privates and part of his chest, the rest is magic. I remember it was a punishment by Madam Yu, and that Lwj finds out when the armor breaks.
Ty!
FOUND? His Knight in Shining Armour by celerydragon (E, 23k, WangXian, dead dove do not eat, Curses, Sexual Abuse, Child Abuse, Non-Consensual Body Modification, Slut Shaming, Top LWJ/Bottom WWX, yu furen sucks, protective lwj, Hurt/Comfort, Anal Sex, Dirty Talk, mild dirty talk, Biting, Outdoor Sex)

19. Hello!
I’m looking for a fix where Wei Ying is gorgeous and coveted by everyone. The junior quartet often have to run interference because he doesn’t realize it. I think an innkeeper’s brother lusts after him too. One of his admirers decides to capture and assault him. Thankfully, Wei Ying is able to use ghosts to overpower him. Eventually, Lan Zhan comes and rescues him. Please help me find this fic! Thank you very much!
FOUND! Cotton Wool by incendir (M, 34k, wangxian, LJY/OMC, JL/LSZ, JC & WWX)
~*~
20. So I've lost a fic again, and I need your help once more!
So the premise of the fic was that lwj did enact that fantasy of taking wwx in the library when they were young, only after lwj internally freaks out and runs off to his brother for punishment because "xiongzhang I took someone by force 😢 I'm horrible"
I don't remember how exactly they got there but lxc gets lwj and wwx to talk, intending for wwx to decide how lwj should be punished as the wronged party. Except wwx somehow comes to the conclusion of "Let me f*ck (fuck) Lan zhan! 😠 he took me, so now I should take him!"
Things end happily but that's all I remember. Please help me! (And before anyone asks, no I'm not mixing it up with the Teapot Plot)
FOUND! My Boyfriend Is So Talented by Xiao_Zhang (E, WangXIan, Underage, Rape/Non-Con, Canon Divergence, Mutual Pining, Sex, LWJ gives in to his lust, Teenage Wangxian, Fluff and Smut, Rape/Non-con Elements, Humor, Romantic Comedy, Misunderstandings)

I am thinking again about how much 'timelines don't exist, canon isn't real, the comics don't keep track so why should I' annoys me, and it's like:-
Generally this is not true, if you're talking about a particular timeline. Pre-Crisis from the Bronze Age onwards is largely coherent, taken as a whole. Post-Crisis is pretty coherent. New 52's problems largely relate to 'what happened prior to #1' more than outright timeline contradictions in the stories between 2011-2016. Rebirth and Infinite Frontier has become more difficult, given that titles reference each other less frequently, but within a title it remains coherent.
Many of the most bumpy timeline issues are when you transition from one canon to another (particularly with regards to titles that got away with running 'across' the reboot, such as NTT or Batwoman or Batman Inc). That's an artefact of reboots giving some titles special leeway as the retcons happened.
What people are usually complaining about is 'something got retconned' rather than 'the books don't know what order events happened in'. Situations like 'explain Donna Troy's backstory' doesn't have a timeline issue; it has a retcon issue in that she now has multiple mutually exclusive backstories to deal with the fact that NTT was allowed to run across COIE while Diana got rebooted, and so on.
There are in fact situations with timeline issues but usually those are in regards to 'untangle the order events happened in during an Event' not big periods of time. Explaining the order of events in Batman RIP and Final Crisis is something that has timeline issues, in terms of 'when did Bruce disappear from Gotham in respect of Final Crisis' and 'when did Talia arrive with Damian' and so on. However, there's no issues with the relationship of 'did these events happen before or after Batman RIP and Final Crisis'. That in itself is clear. Trying to put DC One Million issues in order is a timeline issue. Whether a story took place before or after DC One Million is mostly a case of looking at the issue number.
And adding all of this up: the reason I tend not to have a lot of respect for 'teeheehee DC doesn't care about canon so why should I' in a fic is that whenever people just decide to ignore things and make three things that happened in three separate decades happen simultaneously, they ALSO don't bother to spend any time looking at how this changed events. You know what? I don't care if you want to make Tim 14 for when Jason returns to Gotham. Go right ahead. But if you're going to do that, can you acknowledge you're writing a canon divergence AU and at least GESTURE to which events that ACTUALLY happened when Tim was 14 just got derailed because Jason is back. (Like Underworld Unleashed. You want even more angst/chaos from Bruce? Have Jason turn back up in Gotham immediately after UU)

February Monthly Recap
I had a lot of fics this month. Every one of these deserves a dedicated post of its own but in the interest of efficiency this roundup will have to do!
BATMAN
Uptown Girl by orphan_account (Stephanie Brown/Cassandra Cain), 60k, Case Fic, Friends to Lovers Stephanie Brown has three problems: a supervillain father with a deadly scavenger hunt in the works, a mysterious rich girl who's way too interested in her life, and one really, really painful hobby. Alternatively: a different kind of Spoiler origin story.
The Lois Angle by cabezas_de_vaca (gen), 15k, Bruce & Lois Friendship, Case Fic What she had with Bruce was novel, exhilarating. She had fallen in love several times, and that was like a great swoop of a wing, a flash and flush and then long tumble, but this was like a warmth that welled up from within. This was Bruce grappling up to her thirtieth story Metropolis apartment, stowing the Batsuit in the bathroom, and watching StarTrek with her. This was her driving to the manor when she couldn't sleep, only to find she could do it there. This was having a friend. Or: Despite the long shadow Batman casts and the demands of being one of the youngest Pulitzer winners ever, Bruce and Lois manage to steady each other, in the way that only friends can. Also, there's a case they need to solve.
the scientific method by orphan_account (gen), 20k, Sibling Bonding, Duke-centric 5 stupid ways Duke's siblings discovered how his powers worked, and 1 time he figured it out for himself. "You have no idea," Dick said. "I had to live through all of their teenage years. They were each independently obsessed with Mythbusters at separate points in their life. I'm pretty sure Cass and Tim have wanted a meta to experiment on since they were 14, but Bruce always said no."
Meet Me Where You're Going by Hinn_Raven (Stephanie Brown/Cassandra Cain), 68k, Slow Burn, Mutual Pining When things get complicated in Hong Kong, Cass requests help from Batman Inc. Unbeknownst to her, Bruce dispatches not one of her brothers, but Stephanie Brown, who Cass has not spoken to since she gave up the Batgirl mantle. Steph is eager to reunite with her best friend, but things between them are complicated. Not the least of the problems is the fact that Steph might be falling in love… but of course, Cass is straight, so Steph really shouldn’t dwell on that. Friendship and romance, conspiracy and adventure await the two of them as they try to unravel a complicated plot that seeks to stop Batman Incorporated before it can truly begin.
when you move, fall like a thunderbolt by orphan_account (Stephanie Brown/Cassandra Cain), 5k, Villain!Steph, Canon Divergence In another universe, Stephanie Brown's plans to kill her father aren't interrupted by Batman. Which means nobody stops her from tripping and falling headlong into running her own gang, and then a little more intentionally rising to the top of the underworld. Meanwhile, seeing as Bruce only has one kid who actually wants to carry on the good name, Cassandra Cain takes over as the Batman of Gotham's future. This would be a fine turn of events if it weren't for the fact that they've been dating on-and-off for ten years.
falling without caution by coffeecrowns (gen), 17k, Bad Parent!Bruce, PTSD Jason is twenty, decidedly less into murder, trying to avoid developing agoraphobia, and putting together some pieces into a life. Tim is sixteen, riding the edge of burnout, and in a show of his truly baffling survival instincts, decides Jason is friend shaped.
MICE ON VENUS by NEOCULTUREDAUS (gen), 3k, Tim & Damian Bonding “Timothy, if this is revenge for me trying to kill you, I need you to know I’m not sorry.” Damian’s eyes were clamped shut, hands fisting Tim’s hoodie so tightly that if Tim tried moving, he simply wouldn't be able to. “I’m not trying to get revenge. And open your eyes, you can’t ride a skateboard with them closed.” Tim patronized, prying Damian’s hands off him, you know, like someone evil who didn’t care for the wellbeing of his younger brother. Or The one where skater Tim takes his artist younger brother graffiti painting
So Sweet Saluteth Me by Lishalalalalala (gen), 7k, Good Dad!Bruce Sleep deprived™ Jason hangs out with Dick then they surprise Bruce at work with early lunch and some love. This fic is inspired by farmers’ markets on those summery days and the belief that if I run fast enough the sad can never catch me. (I mean you are telling me that Bruce Thomas/Alan Wayne wouldn’t be absolutely BASKING in joy if his kids just decided to randomly show up at Wayne Enterprise and pay him a little midday visit? )
to count by miles or days or people (when will i stop missing you) by jcp_sob_rjl_lmep (gen), 22k, Angst, Hurt/Comfort When Duke is kidnapped off of the streets of Gotham on his way back to the Manor from visiting his parents, it sends the entire Batfamily into a panic. With very little evidence to go on and time slipping past them, there's no help coming as Duke is forced to make a grand escape and get himself home before his kidnappers find him once more.
birds and brothers and other assorted synonyms by Ao3time, hoebiwan, quandaries_and_contradictions (gen), 21k, Series, Found Family A Reverse Robin AU in which Damian is a tired older brother, Duke is a ray of sunshine, and Dick is a baby talon.
Emergency rooms and chicken nuggets by Lilac_hyacinth (Bernard Dowd/Tim Drake) 7k “So…” Duke drawled, sounding suspiciously wide-awake for the day shift kid at two-thirty in the morning. “If I said Damian and I are in a bit of trouble, on a scale of Jason to Cass, how likely are you to kill us?” Clearing his throat and rubbing his eyes to try to wake himself up, Tim grimaced. “What the fuck did you do?” “Nothing.” Or Tim and Bernard get out of bed at two in the morning to go across town and pick up Tim's reckless little brothers.
Pick a Pocket Full of Pennies by Trekkele (gen), 24k, Found Family, Fluff, AU-No Powers The life and times of Dick Grayson, unintentional ringleader to a gang of pickpockets, and how he learned to let go and get adopted. Or something.
SPIDER-MAN
Death Before Inaction by hppjmxrgosg (gen), 37k, BAMF Peter Parker, WIP “Fuck off, Nicky.” “Hasn’t anyone ever told you spider-napping is illegal?” “You can’t hold me here, I know my spider-rights.” “God, you guys are so old. What are you? Like 27?” “Scale of 1 to 10, how upset would you be if I told you I banged your mom?” - Or, I got my grubby little hands on the spider-man time line and fucked around a little bit. Not much (everything) changes.

So, after watching Season 5 (which has devastated me, by the way - completely and utterly destroyed me), I was inspired to incorporate a certain character into the Queen of the Mountain Universe and tie together the AUs tied to the games. (Excluding the A/B/O AU, Fae AU, and the Imperial Harem AU.)
This technically isn't a fic spoiler since I won't be adding any of this into the main fic itself, mind you. I already have too much planned in Acts II and III to include the new revelations, but I'm writing my ideas here. (May consider writing some oneshots set post-QotM.)
Warning: Spoilers for LMK Season 5 below!
We all knew it was Xiangliu. This snake man has a grip on me that only happened once before when Season 1 Macaque sashayed into my life. Holy hell, he's the definition of chaotic neutral. Also, the hints of lore he dropped before casually moving on because he thought it wasn't important? Drove me insane. What do you mean you and Wukong used to be friends? What do you mean Macaque made a deal? What do you mean be "he's winning"?! Who's he?!
I have no idea what LMK has planned for him (or if he's even going to come back in the future seasons), but I know what plans I have for him now.
To be honest, Xiangliu (the Nine-Headed Demon who nearly scammed Ao Guang and his ilk in Chapter 16) wasn't supposed to be significant in the Queen of the Mountain universe. But with how Season 5 ended up, I made him into a more important player.
Just like the LMK world, I'd like to think that the QotM world also experiences a similar "cycle" in the form of "resets." It would make sense, right? As In the Sun's Embrace and Sunchaser are games that encourages reloads and resets to explore different routes, it's not too far-fetched to think that the world itself experiences something similar.
I've always had a fondness of Time Loops in stories, especially with at least one person remembering every loop. Xiangliu would be that person in this case. Somehow, he became aware of what was happening and yearned for an escape from this constant resetting of the world.
(He must've gone insane gaining and losing friends, lovers, and enemies, doomed to repeat the same song and dance again except his bonds would never be the same since he's always changing and always growing while everyone else regresses every time.)
Eventually, he removed himself from the living world all together and replaced one of the Ten Kings of the Underworld to find a way out. Still, he'd pop up here and then to maybe make some interventions or watch when something new played out.
While a lot of the diverging AUs are mostly due to the different choices made by individuals, I'd like to think that Xiangliu made some of them possible. Notably, Warlord Shanzha AU, Withered Grave Flowers AU, Detoxify AU, and Extra Pilgrim AU.
Well, you noticed how LBD seems to be absent in those AUs, right? How Yue magically comes out of things alive and unpossessed by her into the modern era? Well, the answer in Xiangliu. He doesn't do this in every cycle, but he sometimes has the heart to spare Yue from her canon fate. Making her fate better always seems to give happier endings to all of the celestial monkeys. Not perfect, but happier.
(And, because it would be so funny to me, I'd like to think he at least hooked up with every member of the celestial monkey poly occasionally in between cycles. So he has a history with all of them which I may expand on in another post if anyone's interested.)
So, there you have it. A way for all of these AUs to technically be canon. (Thank you, Season 5.)
As for what Xiangliu is doing during Queen of the Mountain, he's doing nothing. For the first time, he didn't have to do anything to make a drastic change to the usual script. For the first time, he's interested to see how things turn out. Because of a certain six-eared baby monkey yaoguai who ended up in the palanquin.

Master Post of My FirstPrince Fics ~
Fox. Henry Fox. (finished)
Alex had seen the guy around campus, sure. He was hard to miss, but Alex never said out loud why. For everyone else, being the son of the famous James Bond actor made him a celebrity enough. But for Alex, Henry Fox just…stood out. [non-royal au. University au. Cool guy x nerd trope.]
All Over Again (finished)
Alex and Henry's first kiss goes a little differently. [one shot. Canon-divergence. New Year's kiss.]
Salt Follows the Moon (unfinished)
Vampires exist, and it's no secret. What is a secret, is that Henry Hanover-Stuart Windsor needs a blood donor. Alex Claremont-Diaz just can't leave well enough alone.
[vampire!Henry x blood donor!Alex. Canon-divergence.]
Moonburn (unfinished)
Alex Claremont-Diaz is everything a wolf should be. Tall, long-limbed, strong, and most of all: charismatic. Community and pack oriented. Some would also say he’s loud, overeager, and has his head up the moon’s ass. Again: werewolf. It’s like blaming water for being wet. As for Henry Hanover-Stuart Windsor Fox…his mother is a wolf. She comes from a long and prestigious line—many lines—of wolves. She fell in love with a human. Despite the initial shock and disdain for marrying outside of tradition, having two children born as healthy, strong wolves calmed several of the loudest, bigoted voices. And then Henry came along. The youngest. The favorite. The human. But nobody else knows that last part.
[werewolf!Alex x human!Henry. Canon-divergence.]
Satellites (unfinished)
Alex is in England for a year studying abroad. To his both relieved and annoyed surprise, the whole school is in a tizzy over something other than the American president’s son enrolling…except it’s Henry. Prince Henry. He’s enrolled too.
[university au. Ceramicist!Henry x dancer!Alex. Still royal and FSOTUS.]
Alexander Hamilton Hall (unfinished)
It started with a group project. Well, Alex supposed it started when Henry Fox moved to town, or perhaps when Alex’s parents succeeded enough in their political careers that he and June were transferred to the most prestigious high school in Texas. Alexander Hamilton Hall.
[high school au. Non-royal au. Arthur lives au.]
Burning (unfinished)
Henry did manage to tell Alex to leave that night in Kensington. Now it’s two years later, and Alex is over it. He has a girlfriend. His mother has been reelected. He’s going to the Swanky Soiree of Something Important in Paris, because he’s over it. Henry can be there and it’s fine. Henry is there. And it’s most definitely not fine. [canon-divergence. Whump and angst. Getting back together fic.]
Codename: Rapunzel (unfinished)
Acquiring the Prince of Wales’ name in his Burn Book, so to speak, had not been a surprise in Alex’s line of work. What had been a surprise, was that someone wanted the fourth in line for the throne dead. [assassin/hitman!Alex x Prince Henry.]
Defy the Odds (unfinished)
Henry is a prince of the Olympians. He has had everything bestowed upon him since his birth. And yet, none of it mattered when the light of his father's soul went out. Alexander is the First Shade of the Underworld. Prince of the dark realm and...the perfect person to help Henry along his many - many - journeys into the Underworld to find his father. That is, if they can stand each other long enough to cooperate. [an inverse Hades Game!AU where Henry is trying to find his father in the Underworld. Basically Zagreus Henry and Thanatos Alex.]

it's a mid-january miracle, i actually wrote something. after threatening to finally start writing captain swan fics, i actually did it. thank you to all my beautiful friends on discord who encouraged me and to @dykelilypage i'm so glad you liked your gift <333 this is chapter 1 of 2, second one should be up tomorrow probably maybe who knows? :)))
summary: emma swan came to the underworld with one purpose; to rescue the man she loved from hades' grip. and she would do anything, sacrifice everything in order to that happen. when hades offers her a deal, a test of their true love, she takes it. in the end though, the bargain might just take more for them than they have to give. S5B canon divergence
tw: minor moments of gore and torture, also pregnancy and child birth
✨ ao3 link ✨

Emma had made plenty of bad decisions in her life. Big, catastrophic decisions, she could admit that. If she were to rank them though, willingly letting herself fall under a sleeping curse to rescue the man she loved from hell, probably would have ended up pretty high on the list.
She stared at him, across the wide airy field of middlemist flowers that wasn’t actually there, but felt nearly as real as she remembered, and wondered if he would feel the same.
“Swan.” Her name sounded like a prayer, rasped from his too-dry throat.
She was running then, or maybe she had started running before, she wasn’t sure. Her arms circled him when they met, his own grip nearly crushing as he lifted her off her feet. Frantic kisses and searching hands probed each other as incomplete pleas stuttered out of each of them.
“You alright?”
“-m fine. You can’t be here-”
“-made a deal. Hades, he had a deal.”
“-have to go back. Please, you have to go back.”
“I can’t.”
The last two words dropped like a stone between them and Killian jerked back. His face was the same as it had been when she’d last seen him alive. It was no longer the swollen mess of throbbing bruises Hades had left it in, when he’d shown Emma her lover’s broken body that was being torn and burnt and flayed apart until she had screamed to make it stop. Killian’s hand, the fingers still intact and no longer snapped and broken, cupped her face. He was trembling. Or maybe that was her. It was hard to tell at this point.
“Emma,” her name came out as a whisper. “Emma, where are we?”
She smiled as something huge and terrifying in her chest threatened to burst open.
“Somewhere... Somewhere in my mind. I think? Maybe,” she glanced around again, trying to focus. “A memory. He kept saying something about memories. Our memories.”
“Love, you aren’t making any sense.”
She laughed and it sounded like a watery hiccup. “Hades. Hades and I made a deal.”
The hand on her face tensed as she watched his expression grow brittle. “Emma-” his throat bobbed. “Emma. What kind of deal? What did you promise him?”
She held up her right hand, her index finger raised. A small droplet of blood welled up in the sensitive pad of flesh at the tip where she had pricked it only moments earlier.
“Sleeping curse,” she tried to keep her voice calm as she risked another glance at him. His face was ghost white, completely drained of colour. “I think he thought he was being funny. Something about “the old Charming family tradition.””
Killian’s head was shaking, his eyes darting away from her as he scanned the edges of the tree line behind them, looking for a way out. “We have to wake you up. Emma you don’t understand, Hades he-”
She watched his gaze go unfocused, the nerve in his jaw popping.
“Hey,” she said quickly, her hand curling around his neck, pulling him back to her. “He can’t get you, not here. Not unless he feels like breaking our deal.”
His eyes were still nervy, and she could feel his pulse jumping beneath her palm, but he focused on her again. God she had missed him. Missed the way he smelled, the way his scruffed jaw felt when she held it. It suddenly seemed so hysterically unfair that they’d only had a few months together. They deserved a lifetime.
“This deal,” he rasped after a moment. “Tell me exactly what he asked of you.”
“He wanted…” she trailed off, trying to remember what he had said. “He said he wanted to test us. To see if what we shared was true love or not. That we needed to really see every part of each other before we made our decision.”
Killian was holding very, very still, his expression unreadable. “And for us to do this test, you needed to be cursed, is that right? Am I cursed as well? Is that how I’m standing here with you?” His voice sounded calm, almost reasonable, as if they were discussing the rules to a complicated board game. But Emma could still feel his panic, could see it starting to edge into the corners of his eyes, turning them glassy. Another one of her huge, catastrophically bad decisions alright.
“No. No you aren’t under a sleeping curse,” she tried to make her voice comforting, but doubted it had much effect. “He said that souls without a living body don’t need curses to be moved to the dream realm, as long as they’re tethered to someone alive they just sort of- “hitch a ride,” or something.”
A smile started to spread across his face, though it didn’t reach his eyes. “So I’m tethered to you then?”
“Seems that way,” she said, her heart feeling like a dead weight in her chest. “I’m not exactly sure about the next parts, he was talking about memory magic, about old wounds needing to be opened up. He said the dream realm made the magic more…” she waved her hand. “Potent or something. Made it easier to find old memories.”
Killian’s hand dropped to her shoulder, his hook resting against her hip. “Why does he want us to explore old memories? Which memories? What does he gain from that?”
“I have no idea, I’m pretty sure he was just talking to hear himself speak at some point.”
“I don’t like this. Hades wouldn’t make a deal unless it was to punish or to trap you here. Emma, please,” his tone was growing frantic and it was making her own nerves start to fray. “Try and remember exactly what he said. Every word. If he’s trapped you here-”
“I don’t remember all the specifics! I was a little distracted watching you get tortured. Hades didn’t exactly have my undivided attention.”
Killian’s eyes shuttered and Emma could feel the slight tremor in his hand as it fell from her shoulder. She wished she hadn’t mentioned the torture. The second she had, she’d seen his face go blank. When this was over, she would kill Hades. She wasn’t sure how exactly, but she would get creative. Somehow she would figure out a way to make the god of death hurt in the same way he had made Killian hurt.
“Look,” she said, her voice thick. “All you need to know is that he can’t hurt us. I made him swear it. He can’t touch you here, and he can’t kill me. Everything that happens now is up to us.”
He looked up, staring at something far away from them, like he was remembering something he’d rather forget. “And if we fail? What then? Does he get both of us to torture for eternity?”
“We won’t fail,” she told him. They wouldn’t. She couldn’t let that happen. Even if it killed her, she would never let Hades touch Killian Jones again. “I got down here didn’t I? And I found you. The hard part’s already done.”
He huffed out a laugh that sounded wrong to her ears. “Your confidence is admirable, Swan. But you don’t know what Hades is capable of. What he does to you once he has you.”
She could feel him slipping from her, could feel the despair coming off him in waves, and it killed her. “There’s a fail safe,” she told him quickly. “I can call off the deal at any time.”
He jerked his attention back to her, suddenly alert.
“But Killian, if I call it off, if I choose to end this, you go right back where I found you. Back to Hades,” she said, a world of meaning in her words.
“But you’ll be safe?”
She looked at him. She should tell him. Tell him the entire truth. Tell him exactly what she had promised to keep him safe, to bring him back home. What she had signed away. But if she told him, if he knew everything, he would never agree to it. He would refuse and send her back and all this would be for nothing. He would go back to the endless, screaming pain that Hades had cleaved into him until there was nothing of him left. She couldn’t let that happen.
“Yes,” she said. “I’ll be fine. But you won’t. Please Killian. Please just let us try this first. We have to.”
He blew a breath out of his nose, looking down when she grabbed his hand in both of hers and squeezed. “Alright,” he said. “Alright, we'll try.”
She grinned as she wrapped her arms around him, kissing him, holding him. His hand moved up to her hair, cradling her head, his forehead coming to rest against hers.
“So. How exactly does this trial work? What do we have to do?”
There was a quick burst of magic to the left of them, and a door twisted into existence a few feet away. The carved wood groaned slightly as it seemed to sway towards them, rocking on its frame, before coming to a stop. They both stared at it.
“Well. Guess that answers that,” she said.
“Indeed,” he sighed, turning back to look at her. She saw a question, huge and all consuming in his stare that went unasked. Right, this was her deal. Her curse. He would follow her lead. Like he always did. Whatever happened, no matter how much it took from her, she would do whatever it took to make sure he got out of this.
“C’mon,” she nodded towards the door. “Let’s get this over with.”
He grimaced as they walked towards it, reaching down to grip the brass handle and opening it for her. “Any idea what’s awaiting us on the other side?”
She squeezed his hand, raising her brows. “Nope.”
They walked through. And the ground beneath their feet vanished.
***
She was falling. Her hair was whipping around her head while the wind rushed up and made her eyes water. Images and noise strobed past like flickering television screens as she plummeted down towards a huge, white nothingness. If she focused she thought she could make out faces, blurred and half formed, but they streaked past her, faster than her eyes could follow. She tried to reach out, tried to find something to grab a hold of, something to slow her fall, but it was like falling through light and sound and a great vast emptiness eager to swallow her whole.
Was this it? Was this what Hades had planned all along? No harm to her physical body sure, but trapping them in some fucked liminal space for eternity? Well. That was a different story.
She tried to look up, or whatever passed for up in this space and suddenly felt something grab her arm. Killian, his grip tight on her, was falling beside her. His mouth was open, mouthing something she couldn’t hear over the roar of noise and wind and her own frantic heartbeat. She tried to reach for him, her fingers outstretched-
When everything slammed to a sudden stop.
Her mind lurched, feeling like the contents of a car with its brakes hit too hard. The tunnel of noise, whatever it had been, was gone, and a blindingly blue sky stretched out in front of her. She tried to blink and turn her head, but her body was locked in place, no longer listening to her.
Only…only it wasn’t her body.
She heard someone call for her, but it wasn’t her name she heard, it was Killian’s. She twisted and when her mouth opened it wasn’t her voice that boomed forth, but a man’s, low and accented, and oh-so familiar to her.
She’d dealt with memory magic before, had stayed up long, magic-drunk nights as the dark one weaving dream catchers together in order to snare memories. She’d been expecting something closer to that, where memories played like snippets of old tv reruns. This was something completely different. She wasn’t just watching Killian's memories, she was living them. In his head.
“What news do you bring me then?” he called.
He sounded happy, and Emma could feel it then, he was excited about something. Somehow, inside his head, she could feel thoughts, could almost reach out and touch them.
He stood on the top deck, near the massive helm. Below him, near the rigging of the sails, a woman with dark hair and seafoam eyes grinned at him. Even before Emma felt the sudden rush of love and recognition, she knew exactly who she was looking at. Milah.
“No news that can safely be shared among mixed company, captain ,” Milah called with a wink. She had Henry’s smile, Emma realized distantly.
The crew around Milah laughed uproariously, and her wide grin was a twin to the one stretching across Killian’s as he swung round the deck to go meet her.
Just as Emma was greedily drinking in the image of the image of the woman who had her son’s grin and Killian's heart, the world suddenly melted and shifted around her. It was as if the memory smeared, all the unimportant bits forgotten and discarded. She moved through short, foggy glimpses of old points in time. Moments alone with Milah, the sound of her laugh, the feeling of her eyes watching him, her laugh lines fanning out from the corners. At the core of it, his love for her was like a warm, even glow in his chest. Emma was suddenly sad that she would never get to meet this woman. This woman with the sharp wit and an easy laugh. She thought she would have liked her.
She kept floating through memories until they solidified all at once into sharp focus. Killian was back on the deck. Only he couldn’t move, something tight twisted around his chest and pinned him down. In front of him, Milah was on her knees. A man stood before her. His hand was buried into her chest.
Emma recognized Rumpelstiltskin as blind, frantic panic tore through Killian, choking her. Killian had never told her explicitly how Milah had died, only that Gold had killed her. But she knew this moment. She knew what happened next.
Rumpelstiltskin's hand tore free, Milah’s beating heart in his grip. He stared at it almost hungrily. Emma heard Killian shout, felt him pull himself free from the ropes binding him and dive for Milah as she slumped back. He caught her, begging, pleading words stumbling from his lips. She felt so light in his arms, a hollow empty shell. They shared a look, Milah’s gaze full of an unspoken farewell.
She heard, rather than saw the crunch of the heart as Rumpelstiltskin crushed it. Milah gasped, dead even before the ashes crumbled and fell to the deck.
Rage built in Killian, blinding and useless. It pushed him to his feet, surged him forward. He cursed Rumpelstiltskin, his hands in fists, desperate to drive them into the scaled skin and rotting teeth of the man who took his love. Rumpelstiltskin's grin was sharp. A blade flashed. Men shouted. A horrible, exquisite pain erupted from Killian’s left wrist and drove him to his knees. Emma wanted to scream.
Everything started moving too fast. The memory grew blurry again, every part of it dulled by the all consuming pain and rage boiling in Killian. He was screaming, driving a hook into Rumpelstiltskin's chest, mocking laughter meeting his ears. Then hands were grabbing him, pulling him back. Pain. Oh god there was just so much pain. Emma felt herself being dragged down with it, Killian’s vision growing black. But even in the darkness she felt the agony, unable to escape it. All alone in his head, she ached.
The memories came and went. Bright flashes of faces crowding into his vision, frantic voices and bloody rags. Blood. There was so much blood. She could smell it, the sharp, copper tang of it. It felt like it coated his tongue, filled his nostrils and tried to drown him. He was being moved, every bump and bounce he felt sending jolts of pain through his system and forcing him back into blank unconsciousness.
Then heat. It was so sudden and sharp it brought him back to bleeding, screaming life. The world around him was thrown into abrupt focus as molten heat was pressed against the agonizing, throbbing stump of his wrist. He looked at the white hot blade being forced against his skin, watched as it melted his flesh and made it bubble around the edges, cauterizing it. He was screaming. It filled his head, an endless bellow of animalistic pain that crashed into Emma like a blow.
When the darkness came for him again, Emma welcomed it with a sob.
She didn’t know how much time had passed when he started to wake again. She didn’t care. Every part of his body was one, long, endless agony. She couldn’t breathe from the force of it. Above him, it grew dark, then light, then dark again. Time moving on with or without him.
A noise woke him at some point. She blinked the grit from his burning eyes, trying to look at where Killian's hand had been severed. His wrist was an angry, mottled thing, the skin around it too pink, too tight. Thick blisters, fat and stretched taunt, seemed too shiny in the pale light below the deck of the ship where they had left him.
Her head lolled, their shared vision turning syrupy around the edges as the pain rose up again and smothered her in burning heat.
She could hear voices, pitched low, all whispering with a panicked edge.
“Fever.”
“ Infection…”
“The amount of blood he lost-”
“No one could survive that.”
Emma writhed inside the shell of the memory. Killian , she sobbed, unsure if he could hear her. Was he in here with her? Was he reliving this too and she just couldn’t feel him? Or had Hades taken him away from her again? It was so quiet now. Killian. Killian. She repeated it again and again, his fever touching her own mind, choking the air from her lungs. How could he bear this? How could anyone bear this?
Fresh pain shot from his wrist and Emma threw her head back and screamed. Tears rolled down her cheeks when it was Killian’s voice, Killian’s pain she heard echoing endlessly in her head as she was pitched sidewise into another memory.
He was vomiting, heat and misery burning him, leaving him feeling feverish and delirious. He was fading in and out of consciousness, through the days, maybe weeks, he could no longer tell. Food and water had to be forcibly shoved into his mouth until he swallowed it, all the while he cursed at them for daring to try and keep him alive in his grief.
Emma watched it all, helpless inside his head. Killian had been right. Hades had found a way to torture them after all. Because this? Watching Killian break apart, unable to help, was agony. She wanted to fight, wanted to scream at the unfairness of it. But she could do neither. She could only sit and witness it all.
More memories faded in and out. In his rare moments of lucidity, the image of Milah, her heart torn from her chest, burned across his brain. His heart felt empty, like a hollow burden, sinking his body down deeper. His love for her burned itself away, twisted and malformed from grief. In its place, only one thought remained. Revenge.
The word repeated itself, over and over, until it became a mantra. As his body healed, as the scar tissue on both his wrist and his heart thickened, he swore it to himself, again and again. He would have his revenge. No matter the cost.
Trapped inside his tortured mind, Emma mourned for him.
***
Killian woke in agony. Pain snaked around his spine and sank into his bones, leaving him too weary to move. For one, terrifying moment, he thought he was back in the underworld. That all this had been a ruse. Emma had never come for him, Hades had simply split open his head and planted the idea of her, giving him hope and then taking it. Yet again.
But this place didn’t feel like his hell. There were voices around him, low murmuring, distinctly human voices.
He tried to open his eyes, but they stayed stubbornly shut. Another wave of pain twisted inside him, washing over him as his back arched and a low, sobbing moan filled his head. Emma. That was Emma’s voice.
“You’re doing great Emma, just a little longer now,” a strange voice near his feet comforted.
He felt her then, Emma. She was scared and exhausted and so, so heartbreakingly sad that it nearly swallowed her.
He wasn’t here, he realized as her emotions buffeted him and surrounded him from all sides. This was Emma’s body. Her memory.
Her eyes opened and Killian looked across the room through tear blurred eyes. She was on her back, doctors and nurses standing around her, their faces hidden with masks and hair coverings. Blinding, overhead lights seemed to beat down on her, making her even more uncomfortable. She tried to move and Killian felt something tug on her wrist.
She let out a small sob of annoyance and pain, looking down at the silver cuff that chained her to the bed. They’d restrained her. She was in pain, she needed help, and they’d restrained her.
Fury raced through him, though he couldn’t tell if it was his or hers he felt, or a combination of the two. She felt so small in the bed, and so completely alone.
Another rush of pain, this one stronger than the first two, sent stars across their shared vision and Emma fell back.
“Okay Emma, you’re ready. It’s time to push, alright?”
She was shaking her head, and Killian felt her panic and his own bleed together. She was giving birth. He was about to witness her giving birth inside her own mind. For some reason the complete invasion of it flooded his brain, made him want to climb out of her head and simply hold her. This was her memory. Hers. He had no right to witness this and Hades certainly had no right to take that choice from her.
But he was here. There was no taking back what had been started. So he sat in the mind of the woman he loved and felt her body tear itself apart.
She was screaming, her body bearing down, the act of giving birth overwhelming her rational brain and simply taking over, trying to push. Sweat poured down her face as she strained, her pain now just a constant steady stream of misery. She wanted it to end. She needed it to end. She just wanted to lay back and sleep and never wake up. She’d fought so hard her whole life and now she had no fight left. She was done.
“You've got this Emma,” a nurse soothed from her left side, her gloved hand rubbing circles on her back. Emma liked her, Killian could feel it. This was a kind person, the only person who treated her like a patient and not a prisoner. A good person, a decent person. Someone who would make an amazing parent. Unlike her.
“Emma, I need you to work with us,” the doctor positioned between her legs called. “You need to keep pushing, your baby is ready to come out.”
Her baby. Killian felt a spark of something light inside her. Emma was too scared to give the feeling a name, but Killian recognized it instantly. Love.
Oh how she loved this little baby. She adored it. She sang it songs in her head and read to it in the bed of her prison cell when everyone else was asleep. She would give anything to her baby if it asked.
So she pushed. She pushed even as she felt like she was tearing in half, when the pain grew knife-sharp and carved her open. Voices blurred around her, all speaking over each other, telling her to take deep breaths, that she was almost there, that it was almost over. She gripped the sides of the bed, shoving forward and pushed until she thought her bones would crack and she would break apart until there was nothing of her left.
“Big push now Emma! Big push!”
She screamed and it was like the ozone in the room ignited, the lights in the room glowing white hot and shattering. Killian felt a punch of raw, primal magic explode from within her and then-
A baby’s cry, small but strong, broke through the silence. Henry. He was here. Killian wanted to look at him, wanted to see the boy's face, the feeling nearly overwhelming him. But Emma didn’t turn to look. She squeezed her eyes shut, and sank into the mattress.
“It’s a boy Emma,” the doctor said, a smile in his voice.
A boy. She had a son. A beautiful, perfect son. He cried out, and Killian felt it drive into Emma's heart like a knife. Every part of her wanted to turn, wanted to take him in her arms and hold him, to soothe his cries and protect him from every bad scary thing in this world like it was her only job in this life.
But…she couldn’t. She loved him more than anything. She would give him anything to make him happy, to keep him safe. And because of that she knew that meant he had to go away. As far away from her as possible. He deserved so much, he deserved the whole world. And she couldn’t afford to give it to him. All she had to give him was a chance. A chance at a better start. Without her. She couldn’t be a mother, couldn’t be his mother. She would ruin him. Taint him somehow. She wouldn’t do that to him.
Killian felt the decision form in her mind, felt her shake her head and grit her teeth, squeezing her eyes shut as tears spilled down her face. He heard the doctor tell her that she could change her mind, that it wasn’t too late. But he knew. He knew what happened next. He wanted to beg her to change her mind, to see that she already was a mother, he wanted to be there and tell her over and over until she believed it. But he couldn’t change the past. He could only watch it.
“No. I can't be a mother,” her voice was so small, it broke him.
He felt her heart tear itself in two. When the doctors carried her baby away from her, when Henry’s small, searching cries faded down the hall into silence, Killian felt as a piece of Emma’s heart went with him. Heartbreak didn’t come close to describing this feeling. It was as if a huge, yawning emptiness split open in her chest where her heart had once sat and consumed her.
***
Killian woke with a start, jerking up and dragging air desperately into his lungs. Beside him, Emma shot up, panting, eyes darting until she saw him. Her face was pale, her hair damp from sweat and sticking to her face. She opened her mouth, her eyes rapidly moving over his face, before flinching away from him and vomiting into the tall grass. He shot forward.
“Emma, breathe. It’s alright, it’s over. What did you-?”
“Probably a good idea to give her a minute,” a taunting voice called from behind them. “She had a hell of a ride in there.”
Killian’s head spun, white hot rage spilling into his blood. Behind them, Hades sat back in a plastic lawn chair, one ankle crossed over his knee, grinning.
“You bloody bastard,” Killian was on his feet, his hand clenched. The overwhelming urge to stomp the heel of his boot into Hades’ cold, dead smile, nearly blinded him.
“Ah, ah, ah!” Hades warned, a single finger raising in the air. “We wouldn’t want to do anything rash now, would we Emma?” He leaned over, calling to her. From her kneeling position, she shoved her middle finger over her shoulder without turning and spat in the grass.
“Hades if you’ve hurt her-”
“Me? Oh no, I didn’t do anything,” he said with mock innocence. “All I did was show her your memory.”
Killian felt his blood run cold. What memory could he have shown her for her to react like that? He knelt back down when Emma moaned, wiping the back of her hand against her mouth.
“Ignore him,” she rasped. “I’m alright. It was-it was just intense.”
“Emma love, call off the deal. I won’t have you in pain like this, I can’t-”
“No!” her eyes burned as she reached up to grip him. “Killian, no, I can handle it. Please. I promise.”
Killian blew a sharp breath from his nose, trying to keep his composure. “Emma,” he tried to make his voice gentle but it still carried an edge. “Love, what memory did he show you?”
Her eyes went distant for a moment, and Killian felt his stomach tighten. He had lived centuries, had done countless brutal things. Any of them were enough to have her react like this. The question was, which one had Hades chosen?
“It was Milah,” she said after a pause. “The moment Rumpelstiltskin killed her, and took your hand.”
Killian went still, staring at her. Hades had shown her that moment? Milah’s face, frozen in fear, floated in front of his eyes, there and gone in seconds. A phantom twinge of pain jolted from his wrist reflexively.
“How much-” he swallowed. “How much did he show you?”
“Oh, I showed her everything, don't worry!” Hades's cheery voice called. “No gory detail left out. Gave her the full surround sound experience, didn’t I Emma?”
Beside him, Emma's face turned pale, her tongue darting out to wet her dry lips. Killian remembered the pain he had felt trapped inside her memory of Henry’s birth, the agony she had gone through, and felt dread turn his skin cold. She had experienced him losing his hand. Even in his most lucid recollections of that day, Killian had never managed to remember that pain in anything other than hazy, blurred-over recollections. He had pushed it so far from his mind to protect himself from reliving that brutal torment.
And Hades had just made her experience it in full, merciless detail.
“You bastard Hades, there was no bloody need to show her-”
“Show her what? The moment you decided to dedicate your life to avenging your one true love?” Hades asked, his eyes growing wide with mock innocence. He turned to Emma and grinned. “No offense of course. No shame in being the runner up.”
Killian surged to his feet, blood pumping, hook raised. He would bloody end him. Here and now.
“Don’t let him get to you.” Emma said, pushing herself up on shaky legs, to grip his arm. “He's not worth it.”
Killian spared her a glance. “He doesn't have the bloody right. He doesn’t have the right to reach into our heads and pull out our pain just to torture us with it.”
“Oh I’m pretty sure I do though. After all,” Hades steepled his hands together, his gaze locking on Emma. “We made a deal.”
“The deal was to test our true love, not whatever twisted game you’re playing at Hades,” Killian snapped.
“And that’s exactly what I’m doing,” Hades said, his tone taking on an edge of false sincerity. “True love isn’t just some cheap card trick, it’s the most powerful magic that exists. To have it you need to love so fully and completely that it’s like second nature. And you can’t have love like that when you don’t really know a person, now can you?”
The god of death gestured with both hands, like a demented talk show host. “Seriously this is a once in a lifetime opportunity here! I really wouldn’t pass this up if I were you. You,” he pointed to Killian. “Get to finally see inside the head of the saviour, finally learn what makes her tick. And you,” his hand swung to Emma. “Get to learn what kind of man Killian Jones really is.”
His words felt ominous. A promise and a curse all at once.
“Ignore him,” Emma said. “I already tried to tell him earlier that this whole test was pointless.” She turned to look at him, her mouth turning up at the corners as a fire lit behind her eyes. “I already know exactly what type of man you are.”
“Mmmm, do ya though?” Hades asked with a hiss of breath, tilting his head to the side. “See, I'm not so sure about that. I mean you two have known each other, what, a few months at most? He’s got a whole three centuries worth of history before meeting you. Entire lifetimes lived before you were even born.”
His gaze sharpened, the edge of his smile growing pointed. “Are you really sure he’s even worth it?”
“Yes.”
Killian sucked in a sharp breath at her sudden certainty. She turned and looked at him, her eyes holding promise. “Yes, I know he’s worth it.”
“Touching,” Hades said dryly. “Really. And for your sake, I hope you’re right. We’ve got a hell of show left to get through.”
Killian could feel the magic starting again, could feel the rush of it start to build, and shook his head. He still didn’t trust this, any of this. He knew how Hades made deals, and he knew there was no way he would give either of them up so easily.
“Emma said you agreed on a fail safe, a way out for her if she needs it. How do we know you’ll honor that?” He asked, stopping the god from conjuring another door.
Hades turned to give them a bored look, as if the question was barely worth his time. “Emma isn’t dead, not yet anyway. I don’t have any way of keeping her bound in the underworld with me. She has the ability to leave whenever she wants.”
“Yeah sure…one small problem though,” Emma glanced between the two of them. “I can’t exactly get up and walk out while I’m stuck in a sleeping curse, can I?”
Hades’s smile turned wolffish, his eyes lighting as if she’d finally said something interesting. “Well now, how funny you bring that up. I was wondering when you would.”
When they both only stared at him, the god’s face fell.
“Hello? Sleeping curse?” he said, gesturing to Emma with a flicking hand. “True love’s kiss? Big flashy light show? Thought this was all sort of obvious? Gods you two really are slow. Here.” he jumped to his feet, hands tucking into the pockets of his pants, and stalked towards them.
“Let me break this down for you. You have two options, one; you see my test through to the end and test the strength of your love, or two;” he held up two fingers on his left hand. “If at any point you want the trial to end, all you have to do is kiss her. She goes back home, no hard feelings, thanks for playing, and you,” he turned to Killian, his grin predatory. “Stay here with me. And we go back to our fun little games.”
They were still for a moment, Emma hand in his squeezing tight. They could. They could just end this now. He could end this now, and save her. He turned to her, caught her tortured gaze. Her head gave one, barely noticeable shake, no.
“Unless, of course,” Hades continued, taking a step towards them. “You’re worried it won’t work?”
Killian blinked. An old, nearly buried dread rising in him like ocean water in a sinking ship. That old fear that Hades was right. That it wasn’t true love at all.
Oh he loved her of course. He had never loved anyone the way he loved Emma Swan. Even the way he had loved Milah had been different. Not any worse or any less but…different. Loving Emma Swan was like loving the sun. It came as natural to him as breathing.
But in his weakest, most torturous moments of doubt he wondered. He wondered if she ever felt the same. She loved him, of course, in her own quiet way. And he had taken that love and cherished it, held it closely to his heart and lived off it, satisfied with all she gave him.
But. True love? In the depths of her heart was it really true love? The uncertainty of it killed him. And he knew that Hades was perfectly aware of that fact. He had practically split Killian’s head open, torn out chunks of him. Every fear, every doubt, every agonizing thought that Killian had ever felt, Hades knew. And now he planned to torture both of them with it.
“We’ll keep going with the trial.” Emma said, breaking Killian’s thoughts apart and scattering them.  “But we need real memories this time, not whatever sadistic thing you find in our pasts that you feel like torturing us with.”
“Ugh. Fine then, since you two want to be boring, we’ll do this your way! Let’s start at the beginning.” He flicked a hand through the air and another door appeared before them. “No more skipping to all the fun bits first. Off you go!”
They stared at it for a moment. It seemed to pulse with magic, threatening and inviting all at once. In his hand, her fingers were cold, the knuckles white where they gripped him tightly. He shifted, lifting his hook and brushing a lock of hair from her shoulder. Her eyes found his and locked on, a question in her eyes. He waited.
“What memory did he show you?” Emma asked finally, glancing up at him. “I’m guessing it was one of mine. Which one?”
Killian debated not telling her. Did she really need to know how Hades had stolen that moment from her? But her face was resolute, her gaze steady. There was no point withholding this from her.
“You were in the hospital,” he said, watching her face. “Giving birth to Henry.”
“Oh.” she said, so quietly he barely caught it. Pain flashed across her face, fast and sharp, before her walls went up again and her expression grew blank.
They both turned to look at the door as it swung open, the hinges squeaking slightly. He gripped her hand tighter, felt her hesitation before she squeezed back. Side by side, they walked through together.
