#V: Rise of the Battletoads

Don't Burn These Witches!
Witches, witches, witches, this certainly was an episode about witches. It seems like every year somebody will tell you that 'witches are back' and that they're 'all the hype now'. That all started with Charmed.
Tumblr media
Emilio can hate this series all he wants, but without these three witches we wouldn't have... the reboot of Charmed...
If you made your way all the way to our Tumblr, you're probably here for some visual stuff. Like... comics! Black Magick is one of the best looking comics in the industry at the moment:
Tumblr media
Look at those colors and the lack of it!
Not everybody is a fan of The Witches of Eastwick, but come on, the cherry scene...
Tumblr media
Can't hate that right?
And finally, Bayonetta.

E3 2019 Rundown with links
Electronic Arts E3 2019
Nothing too new for EA, but they did lay out a straight forward list of the games headlining their event; basically all their larger titles. It is a few hours to sit through all of the round tables, so I’d suggest just watching what you want. a.k.a. Star Wars.

Microsoft E3 2019
What a packed presentation of games with showings of Japanese games, hardware, Halo, and Cyberpunk 2077. The Halo trailer didn’t provide much other than humanity is kind of fucked and Cortana will obviously be coming back. Cyberpunk got the John Wick treatment and I didn’t expect it to be such a dark game. Project Scarlett means nothing to me as I still feel that my Xbox One S is doing fine and I’m pretty sure I can’t even see in 8K. 12 minutes looked really interesting, and I kind of want to play as a deer in Way to the Woods.

They go into a rough patch as 76 did not get the best of receptions, but they address it. My brother plays 76, so he should be psyched for the new update that brings in NPCs. Nothing new was said about the new standalone Fallout or Elder Scrolls games.DOOM grabbed the spotlight and ran with it most of the time. #GhostWireTokyo and #Deathloop both sound pretty awesome.

They come out strong with the leaked Watch Dogs: Legion. (I feel everything is god damn leaked lately.) Legion presents a world in which there are no NPCs. NPCs have now become APCs or All Player Characters. It’s a crazy idea that I hope pays off. Legion still looks like it will take the ‘angry teenager’ approached to the storyline, but I hope there is some depth to it. We didn’t get any new gameplay from Ghost Recon during the conference, but I’m sure new videos will pop up during the week. God and Monsters looks like a wannabe Zelda and Roller Champions looks like a play on Rocket League.

 Square Enix E3 2019
There was lots of Final Fantasy. A decent amount of time was given to the Final Fantasy VII remake. Rightly so, it’s been one of their most highly anticipated games. The demoed presented a mix of real time and selection based combat. Final Fantasy VIX: Shadowbringers had a lengthy trailer that looked dark and dirty. A Final Fantasy VIII remaster was announced, and Square Enix is also releasing all of the Final Fantasy soundtracks. Outriders is announced, it’s a drop in, drop out shooter that involves monster killing. The biggest surprise was an Avengers AAA action game in a new story with new faces. We only got a trailer, but it looked pretty good.
Other games:
The Last Remnant: Remastered
Dragon Quest Builders 2
Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age
Battalion: 1944: Eastern Front
Kingdom Hearts 3 DLC
Dying Light 2
Romancing Saya 3
Life is Strange 2

Nintendo E3 2019
How the hell does Nintendo end up with a guy named Bowser? That is some black magic stuff right there. Though Doug Bowser came off a little stiff the games he helped announce did not. Luigi’s Mansion 3 was a great surprise. I’m always exciting for Zelda content and we got two with Link’s Awakening and a teaser for Breath of the Wild 2.

And as always

I thought since now E3 conferences are over that I just listed some stuff I’m most excited for or games that are under my rader.
Yakuza PC - This announcement alone made my day and E3. I really didn’t want to drop money on a PS4 and now I can save up some money for VR headset. If the PC ports does well, we can also expect upcoming 3,4,5 PS4 ports to come to PC. So I can finally experience the entire franchise.
Devil May Cry 5 - I remember having such a tough time getting into DMC series, but then 4 years ago I played DMC3 and DMC4 and became a huge fan. I was really upset with that abomination of a reboot. I even tried to play it and got bored of it so quickly. I’m glad we’re getting the true sequel and can’t wait to experiences some BANG BANG BANG PULL MY DEVIL TRIGGER.
Battlefield V - I’m still very skeptic but very hype for this game. I feel like in the end the gameplay alone is going be amazing, but they probably mess stuff up in other stuff - it EA so you never know. Hopefully depending on the cosmetics and if they bring back Platoons the Liz Army rise again.
Hitman 2 - I love stealth games and the sandbox style that Hitman Season 1 brought to the table. I wish MGSV would done something similar to with Hitman and MGS:GZ with having smaller sandbox level. 1st level so far look dope from the trailer and I can’t wait to try to see if I can assassinate the driver with putting a rubber duck on the road and have it flip over or just explode.
Nioh 2 / Ghost of Tsushima / Sekiro - Woo, looks like there going be some competition here. I know Sekiro is more of ninja than samurai game, but I feel like these games are going be release around at the same time and are going be mostly similar. I probably get Sekiro out of these three games, but who knows.
Death Stranding - I love Kojima and trust that he knows what he doing, but man I really hope he shows us a full gameplay very soon. Also, it got confirmed to be only on PS4 which sucks (I should have expected it but I was holding off for MGSV situation), and this is the only exclusive left on PS4 I want to play. At this point, I’m probably going see about renting or borrowing a PS4 just so I can play it when it comes out.
Call of Cthulhu - Interesting gameplay/adventure in a place where there really isn’t a much big-budget Cthulhu video game. Maybe there is but this one regardless I'm keeping an eye out on this one.
Doom Eternal - It Doom. No gameplay yet but I’m still hype.
Smash Bros Ultimate - I wish I had a switch, but if I ever somehow get more money then I’m going have blast playing this.
Forza Horizon 4 / Crew 2 - Never been a fan of racing games until Crew 1. I loved the concept of an open-world racing game and I was disappointed with how Crew 1 launched. Hopefully, either of these games will do well and I can finally get a good taste of it.
Beyond Good & Evil 2 - Don’t know anything about this series. no real gameplay yet. But the trailers have been getting me digging the world so far.
Metal Wolf Chaos XD - it Metal Wolf Chaos. Nuff said.
Resident Evil 2 remake - Never played RE before, so maybe this be a good entry point.
Battletoads - It’s Battletoads.

Microsoft E3 2018 Press Conference
Halo Infinite! More Halo is always fun. If only I have ever wanted an xbox.
At this point i’m going to make my time watching this brief and your time reading this brief by skipping past the exclusive games and just giving a name and an adjective or 2 and maybe a short description since I personally do not plan an buying an xbox ever.
Ori: Cute side scroller, reminds me of the latest Rayman games
Ok here we go. Fromsofts new game. hm. Makes me think of that other souls esque game that came out with a strong Japanese theme. That was Nioh wasn’t it. Yeah so this is just Nioh except fromsoft actually made it. Also it’s not Bloodborne 2 (guess i have to eat somebodies ps4) and i no longer trust this developer with anything so as far as i care, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice does not exist.
Skipping the fallout 76 stuff since i just saw the Bethesda conference
Captain Spirit does not interest me in the slightest, skipped
Crackdown 3: Annoying, reminds me of saints row 4.
I don’t have any thoughts on Nier Automota, skipped
Here we go finally something promising. Metro! Metro Exodus look goddamn fantastic and I can’t wait for it. Finally something actually good. It looks like a new metro game and that’s all I need other than the game in my hands.
I have absolutely no interest in Kingdom Hearts, skipped
It’s Sea of Thieves, I don’t own an Xbox, it’s already out, skipped
Battlefield V is a thing. I’m not about that life anymore so I will not be paying much attention to it or it Battle Royal Mode. Skipped
I like racing games so Forza slightly intrigues me, I wonder if it will be available on PC. I do enjoy the fact it appears to have vintage and off road vehicles other than the focus on super cars along with the sheer openness of it. It looks kinda like The Crew. Also I cant believe they have to introduce a mode specifically called “60 fps mode”. God dammit. At the leaves falling on the audience is humorous.
Mr. CEO man is spittin them hot lies. Most powerful console my ass.
I have no idea who any of these little developers are.
I thought we happy few was already out?
Player Unknown already exists and its terrible, skip
Tales of Vesperia: and anime? I think? skip.
Division 2 (Line simulator 2): I didn’t like what the first game was about so I don’t care here, skipped.
I don’t have an xbox, so i don’t have xbox game pass, skipping the whole segment
I really really like the first game of the Tomb Raider reboot, I still need to play Rise of the Tomb Raider, but i will most definitly play Shadow of the Tomb Raider afterwards
Session: Skatebordt. Never liked these games.
Black Desert: Reminds me of Fable
Never Cared for the Devil May Cry series. Skipped.
Fuck Cuphead. Skip
Tunic: Looks super cute, wish it wasn't an exclusive I might have actually wanted this otherwise.
An anime crossover fighting game. Interesting, if only i was more invested into anime. Otherwise Jumpforce does look intriguing
Was never interested in Dying light 1, so ignoring 2.
Battletoads: Its battle toads and that’s all we know.
Just Cause 4? Really? That’s actually very interesting I hope they improved the skill system from 3 and if they have, i always love myself a just cause game.
Fuck Gears of War, skip
Cyberpunk 2077 Look really really really really good.... as an aesthetic and concept, as a game, i have no opinions and as much as I like CD Projekt Red, i’m actually underwhelmed, I was expecting more, but my interest is piqued.
Wow. Just Wow. This was probably the second worst Microsoft E3 conference ever. Not as bad as the xbox one announcement year, but this was really bad. really really bad. That’s 3 games out of their 50 games line up that i’m even remotely interested in. Bethesda might take this E3 if Sony doesn't rock socks off because Microsoft is basically nonexistent this year. What a waste of time.

Canada
Canada, oh Canada, one of our favorite countries in the world, where half of the video games are made and half of the movies are filmed. We tried to talk about something other than Marvel superheroes, but it took a lot of effort to do so as you may have heard.
Our first title was the most Canadian of all, because it was written and drawn by someone who grew up in Canada, the characters are all Canadian and it takes place in Canada. So you wanna know what they look like?
Tumblr media
From left to right: Heather MacNeil Hudson (Vindicator’s wife), Vindicator, up in the air is Aurora, the big robot is Box, right at the bottom is of course Wolverine, their old team mate, the fish lady is called Marrina, then there’s Northstar, the big guy is Sasquatch, the lady in white is Snowbird, next to her is Shaman, down below is Puck (what gave it away, the big letter P?) and lastly Shaman’s daughter Talisman.
Not in this picture - and why should he be - is Nick Knight, the protagonist of Forever Knight.
Tumblr media
Go find some DVD of it and give it a try. Sure, Angel is the better series of the two, but it’s so charming and there is no bad CGI in it at all, because they didn’t use any. Just some colored lenses and fake vampire teeth.
When we discussed Until Dawn we didn’t discuss the cast much, so here goes:
Tumblr media
Pretty impressive for a video game. But no matter how big the stars may be, they’re all going to die...
And then there is X-Men Origins: Wolverine. We will never watch it again.
Tumblr media
Even looking up screenshots of this movie was too painful. You’ll find this movie way down below on our ranking:

A Visit to the Doctor
It was a fun theme, but one of the titles was so uncomfortable, that we could talk about it for a day. We know why you’re here. You want to know what the 6-year-old-tumor-wife looks like.
Tumblr media
So... yeah... that’s his wife. So you know we’re not the weirdos here.
Dr. Mario then. Thijs told you in the episode that he never finished level 20. But a day after recording the episode... he did!
Tumblr media
That ending though... where is that pterodactyl coming from?
The X-Files episode ‘Sanguinarium’ was pretty gross, and we don’t want to scare you away from our blog.
Tumblr media
Like his face? We have some bad news for you: he ends up with a new one.
And Dr. Strange was a great movie, but what was Mads Mikkelsen doing in this?
Tumblr media
You can barely recognize him!
Anyway, here is our new ranking!
‘Hurling Day’ (Dinosaurs, season 01, episode 03, tv, 1991)

A Day at the Beach
We can't wait to go to the beach, but it's way too cold where we live to do that, and ehm... we're not vaccinated yet, so let's wait a little. But: in our newest episode of our podcast, we had these four sunny titles to make us feel a bit warmer inside.
Dead Island is not a terrible game, but boy did it get boring fast.
Tumblr media
Looks like a funny game? It's not! Looks like a scary game? Nope! Punch zombie, punch another zombie, punchzzzz
Scott Pilgrim Gets it Together was a much better experience. It may be our favorite book in the series. All those references that same specifically made for people like us, and you probably, because if you made it all the way to our Tumblr, you're a geek, that's for certain.
Tumblr media
Look at that gorgeous Sonic reference on the first page. And we're not even that big of a Sonic fans, but we still love it oh so dearly.
The Doctor Who serial Planet of Fire was the worst introduction to the franchise for poor Emilio. He was confused for the entire episode.
Tumblr media
Especially because he actually visited this supposedly alien planet called Lanzarote.
And the reason you came all the way to this page after listening to the episode: the Power Rangers episode A Star is Born. And here is the giant caterpillarperson called Weaveworm:
Tumblr media
Love it. Let's close off with our new ranking and see ya next week!

Dungeons & Dragons
Remember playing board games? With friends? And not via Zoom, but in real life? We neither. So we decided to do the next best thing: talk about a board game, or, technically, about a tabletop RPG.
There were some obvious choices we skipped, like the Community episodes, or Stranger Things. But this obvious title we just couldn’t ignore: the Dungeons & Dragons cartoon.
Tumblr media
Emilio loved it, Thijs... didn’t hate it. But we both agreed about one thing: the Dungeon Master is a total creep. Always popping up and disappearing again. Never helping those poor kids.
A title we both weren’t a big fan of was the D&D themed Futurama movie Bender’s Game.
Tumblr media
We usually can’t get enough of Lord of the Rings parodies, but this one was one too many.
We enjoyed the comic DIE somewhat more, but we might be the only Kieron Gillen fans on the planet who are not that crazy about DIE.
Tumblr media
The art in the comic, although beautifully crafted, left us both cold.
And then the board game of this episode, it’s... Warhammer Quest? Thijs’ childhood favorite, it’s D&D for kids, or - because Thijs still likes to play it sometimes - for geeks who just wanna roll some dice and kill some monsters.
Tumblr media
And here are, as promised, some of Thijs’ miniatures that he painted all by himself!
Closing off with our ranking:
'Hurling Day’ (Dinosaurs, season 01, episode 03, TV, 1991)
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (movie, 2001)
Death Note vol 1 (manga, 2003)

No One Man Should Have All That Power
The Infinity Gauntlet. The Death Note. The Ark of Covenant. The... power that James Heller has. No one man should have them, except in a comic or a movie of course, because we had a great joy with our titles this week.
We read this comic years ago, we read it just before the movie came out and we read it last week: The Infinity Gauntlet, by Jim Starlin, George Perez and Ron Lim. The deaths in this comic are so gruesome, the movies are child’s play compared to this horror story.
Tumblr media
Poor Cyclops. And he wasn’t even in the movie...
Death Note is a great read. And not just the manga, the notebook itself too! In the manga (and the anime does that as well) you can read excerpts from it:
Tumblr media
We would love to have this notebook. Not to use it of course, just to read it...
Although we loved playing Prototype 2 again (and although Thijs gave it a high score in his time as a games journalist at PlayStation Magazine), it was our least favorite title of the week.
Tumblr media
But hey. Look at his cool sword-hand-thing. It’s so awesome! It’s so cool! It’s so... 2012...
And what better way to end this blog with the melting face of Toht from Raiders of the Lost Ark:
Tumblr media
This movie hasn’t aged well, but there is nothing wrong with an ancient object that’s killing Nazis.
It’s ranking time!
‘Hurling Day’ (Dinosaurs, season 01, episode 03, tv, 1991)
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (movie, 2001)

Part Four
March the 22nd is Emilio’s birthday, so one of the “40-year old geek”s finally turned 40! Thijs brought him a present, but had a second gift in mind: let’s talk about four part fours. One hilariously bad movie, one bad version of one of Emilio’s favorite games, one of the best games ever made and one great movie. Superman IV: The Quest for Peace is one of the titles we couldn’t wait to discuss. But you’re not here for our opinion, you’re here for this:
Tumblr media
Yep, that’s Nuclear Man. This picture sums him up pretty well. Angry, looking at his amazing thunder nails. He finally made his comic debut by the way, in Superman volume 5, issue 2. More as a joke, because he died in that same issue.
On to Mortal Kombat 4, nobody’s favorite Mortal Kombat game (although Thijs has a weak spot for it). The best fatality, by far, is this one:
Tumblr media
Quan Chi, the evil sorcerer, rips off your leg and beats you to pulp. Because why not. Check it out here.
Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag combined Assassin’s Creed with... pirates. A great concept, but this assassin is not that great at blending in.
Tumblr media
Who, do you think, is the assassin. Just take a guess.
And finally, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Just once more: what a gruesome tournament. That under water part is so cruel.
Tumblr media
Good luck freeing your friends! It gave us a human shark though. That was nice.
The ranking! It’s only fitting that we now have a list of 44 titles:
‘Hurling Day’ (Dinosaurs, season 01, episode 03, tv, 1991)
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (movie, 2001)
Samurai Jack Season 01 (cartoon, 2001)

At Least it has Great Music
Last week’s titles were almost all surprisingly bad and this week they’re even worse. But this time, it’s on purpose, because they’re all bad to mediocre titles with great music. How great those soundtracks are, that you can hear in the show, here we’ll give you some things to look at!
Like, for instance, half naked men...
Tumblr media
300: Rise of an Empire isn’t bad, it’s just totally forgettable. If the theme of the episode would be ‘At Least it has Eva Green’, we’d also choose this movie.
And then it’s time for Silver Surfer, the legendary game. We are love, love, LOVE the music, but... oh boy. Here is that duck we were ranting about, floating on the water, waiting to kill the mighty Silver Surfer:
Tumblr media
We even found some fan-art of it.
And then the movie Hook. Thijs may not be a fan, he for certain agrees with Emilio that this scene is the cutest scene ever, especially given the fact the little kid on the right didn’t even act here.
Tumblr media
Another fun fact, the bigger kid on the left, who is appointed leader at the end of the movie, didn’t know that was going to happen.
And Seven Samurai 20XX, it’s not just great to listen to, but also to look at - if you can stomach the outdated PS2 graphics.
Tumblr media
But even on the PS2, you can see how gorgeous the Moebius designs are.
On to our ranking!
‘Hurling Day’ (Dinosaurs, season 01, episode 03, tv, 1991)
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (movie, 2001)
Samurai Jack Season 01 (cartoon, 2001)
