A new species in the Cyrtodactylus intermedius (Squamata: Gekkonidae) group from an isolated limestone karst formation in southwestern Cambodia

Abstract
The gekkonid lizard Cyrtodactylus intermedius was formerly considered to be a single widespread species in hilly areas across eastern Thailand through southern Vietnam but has recently been partitioned into a complex of 12 nominal species across its range. A population belonging to the C. intermedius group was recently found in an isolated limestone karst block in Kampot Province in southwestern Cambodia, part of which lies within the recently designated Phnom Preah Kuhear Loung Natural Heritage Site. Comparisons of morphometric, meristic, qualitative morphological and color pattern data, as well as a molecular analysis using the mitochondrial ND2 gene, revealed that this population differs from all other named members of the C. intermedius group, and so is described here as a new species. The karst-dwelling C. regicavernicolus sp. nov. was recovered as the sister species to C. laangensis, the most geographically proximate member of the complex and one that is also restricted to a small limestone karst habitat.

"One of the many benefits of solar power is the speed and scale at which it can be deployed. But, despite this, some states still manage to exceed expectations. Viet Nam is one such place. In 2010, the South East Asian country was ranked 196th in the world according to its solar energy capacity. By 2021, Viet Nam had climbed to ninth in the global rankings, jumping above both Spain and France, an astonishing ascendancy.
Tumblr media
In 2018, Vietnamese solar generation was close to zero TWh, but in 2022, solar accounted for 11 percent (14 TWh) of electricity demand from January to June. The rapid growth of solar throughout Viet Nam is estimated to have saved the nation $1.7 billion in potential fossil fuel costs – and this is without factoring in the human, social and environmental harms created through burning fossil fuels.
Viet Nam’s ability to rapidly scale up solar generation over the last decade is down to a combination of factors, including supportive government intervention, a positive policy environment and international collaboration. Targeted investment in key infrastructure was essential, and worked alongside a growing demand for cheap, secure, and clean energy from Vietnamese citizens and businesses. The foundations have been set for Viet Nam to continue its rapid growth in solar, climbing further up the global rankings.
Lessons for rapid transition: How did they do it?
A generous policy mix including tax breaks and a bold feed-in tariff to enable the scaling up of solar generation and bring in new actors.
Investing in transmission and distribution to ensure that the added solar capacity can meet rising energy demand.
Sky-high demand from citizens and businesses driven by concerns over air quality and the availability of affordable household solar systems for clean, reliable and cheap electricity."

Nestled on the serene shores of Phu Quoc island, the Phu Quoc Prison History Museum carries a haunting legacy of suffering and resilience. Once a site of immense brutality during the Vietnam War, it now stands as a solemn memorial, bearing witness to the atrocities endured by prisoners of war.
When French colonists built the prison in 1949, it was used as a place to detain political dissidents. During the Vietnam War, it was used to hold prisoners of war, largely Viet Cong and North Vietnamese soldiers. Today, the former prison is home to a small museum. Its exhibits offer a poignant narrative, intertwining the island's natural beauty with the scars of history, inviting visitors to reflect on the enduring human spirit amidst adversity.

for anyone interested in history:
A really good lecturer and historian i have found recently is this woman Sarah Paine. she teaches at the navel war college so you would think she would be all "oorah! lets shoot some people" but she is incredibly thoughtful about what it means to have populations of people die, "our side" and the "enemy's side." She is really direct and pragmatic about why wars happen, what justifies them, and what ways they can be avoided. I believe she is very invested in non combat solutions as well as how to increase the quality of life in different populations. idk, im doing a terrible job of explaining her appeal.
here's a video of her explaining the Vietnam war. i especially love her answer to "was it worth it?"
youtube
another interesting vid is an interview with her (the interviewer is a total tech bro asshat but it was how i found her so he must have some kind of redeeming features. i can't stand how he starts fantasizing about "what if hitler won?" but sally shuts that right down. the interview is more current but filmed before oct 7th so it's mostly about russia and china.

A new species of Paracortina from a Vietnamese cave, with remarkable secondary sexual characters in males (Callipodida, Paracortinidae)
Anh D. Nguyen, Pavel Stoev, Lien T. P. Nguyen, Tam T. Vu
Abstract
A new millipede species, Paracortina kyrang sp. nov., is described from a cave in Cao Bang Province, northern Vietnam.
The new species is diagnosed by having an extraordinarily long projection on the head of males, reduced eyes, a gonocoxite with two processes, a long and slender gonotelopodite with two long, clavate prefemoroidal processes densely covered with long macrosetae apically, and with a distal, reverse, short spine on mesal side, and a rather sinuous distal part of the telopodite.
This is the third species of the genus that is known from Vietnam. A brief comparison of some secondary sexual characters is made.
