Versailles
Tumblr media
I touched on this in the previous post, but just to clarify, re the Fujifilm X-T5, I fucking love this camera.
I've configured it to use the Velvia/Vivid film simulation with extra contrast, this gives me saturated colours and punchy contrast.
So now, in all-manual mode, she delivers the kind of shots I want straight out of camera. Because I can't be bothered taking crap shots and then photoshopping quality into them later.
We went to the Palace of Versailles recently and I had the chance to try the camera out in the salons where the light is fractured into not-much, shot through with darts of brilliance. Not easy to judge the exposure when eveything is dark or dazzling.
Here are a few shots. None of them have been tampered with.

Finding the Beauty of Fujifilm Velvia Using One Lens
Mmmmmm, dem tones
Velvia is likely one of the most popular Fujifilm film simulation. Folks love vivid colors and those Fujifilm tones always hit just right. It’s the perfect simulation to use on your vacation. Photographers have used Velvia for years to document the world around them. And using a lens like the Tamron 18-300mm f3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VXD lets you do it in the spirit of those vintage photos. Fujifilm X-S10 Puts IBIS Into Compact, Affordable Body
Fujifilm has already released its best camera to date in 2020 (the X-T4), but it isn't resting on its laurels. The company's latest, the X-S10, promises to be almost as capable a camera, but for a lot less money—it costs around $1,000 to the X-T4's $1,700. That's a pretty significant delta, money you can put toward a quality lens. And there's not a lot in the X-T4 that isn't also included in the X-S10.
The X-S10 uses Fujifilm's current-generation 26.2MP X-Trans image sensor, mounted on a 5-axis stabilizer. It's not quite as powerful as the IBIS system in the X-T4, but it promises to deliver six stops of correction with most lenses.
The autofocus is just as capable, too. The camera supports face and eye detection, and can track subjects at 8fps using its mechanical shutter, or up to 30fps using its silent electronic shutter.
Controls are a little bit different than your typical Fujifilm X camera. Instead of a dedicated shutter speed dial on top, the X-S10 has a traditional PASM Mode dial. Fujifilm says it should help users new to the system settle in—you'll still have the option to use the aperture ring on lenses, if you prefer.
Manual control is there when you need it—there are dials at the front and rear for exposure control, and a small eight-way joystick to set focus and navigate menus. You can set the camera to capture Raw or JPG photos.
Its fully automatic mode does a couple of things other Fujifilm models can't—for one, you can work in Raw format when the camera is set to auto. For JPG capture, the X-S10 will automatically select the best film simulation, and apply color chrome and dynamic range adjustment based on the content of your image.
You can also work in semi-automatic modes, like aperture and shutter priority, and select from a number of built-in film simulations to change the colors and contrast of your image. The camera includes on-screen guidance to let you know what each does, so you don't have to remember that Velvia is Vivid and Eterna is a motion picture look.
The electronic viewfinder is the same quality and magnification as you get with the X-T30. It's typical for a midrange mirrorless model, with a 0.62x magnification rating that's a bit smaller than what you find on premium models. The rear LCD is a 3-inch touch screen; it's mounted on a vari-angle hinge, so it can face forward for selfies and vlogs.
As a video camera, the X-S10 is very capable. It records 4K at up to 30fps at 8-bit 4:2:0 quality internally, and can output clean 10-bit 4:2:2 signal over micro HDMI. Slow motion is an option too, with 120 and 240fps support at 1080p. In addition to film simulations, the flat F-Log profile is included.
The body is magnesium alloy, but the camera isn't sealed against dust or splashes—you can use an X-T4 in a monsoon, but stick to clear skies with this one. Cutting the weather protection helps reduce weight, too—the body comes in at just a hair over a pound.
The body itself is fairly slim, but it has a deep handgrip, a plus if you plan on using larger lenses. It's not just an ergonomic decision—the grip houses the NP-W126S battery and SDXC memory card slot.
We'll have a closer look at the Fujifilm X-S10 soon—it's set to ship to customers in mid-November. You can buy it as a body only for $999.95, or kitted with a zoom lens. An XF 18-55mm F2.8-4 kit is $1,399.95 and an XF 16-80mm F4 OIS WR costs $1,499.95.
In addition to the camera, Fujifilm is adding a new lens to the mix. The XF 10-24mm F4 R OIS WR sports the same optics as the older XF 10-24mm, but adds weather sealing and a locking aperture ring to the mix. It's priced at $999.95 and will ship in November.
There are also two new lenses on the company's XF development roadmap. Expect an XF 18mm F1.4 and a 70-300mm F4-5.6 OIS to go on sale next year.

Hello Fuji X-T1.
Why the sudden change to Fuji-Film from Nikon? Somebody asked me. Well after more than 15 years with Nikon I have had lots of fun photographing, and there is nothing wrong with Nikons cameras, except for their weight and lack of firmware updates, and their service.
Weight is the number one issue in my case My Nikon D2x was about 1,3 kg. and that was only the body. Then all the lenses and stuff. I had to pack a suitcase for the camera and lenses itself. I needed a fast camera, not to heavy and not to big. As a travel / street / documentary photographer you need to travel light. At least when you reach my age. The Fuji X-T1 gives me a light camera that provides me with all these needs.
As a Wedding / Portraiture photographer it gives me an incredible sensor that works well when I work under poor lighted conditions. Its ISO works well, so I’m able to concentrate much more on the people I’m photographing than adding extra Lightsource’s.
Of cause I had a chance to try it out for nearly two weeks about a year ago, and that made the decision easier to switch to this system, and now I look forward to get to know it and its features.

Speeding Departing Train (Yokohama, Japan)
The last shot of this photo shoot. Here, I experimented with the  low-light capabilities of the Fujifilm X100V camera and experimented with intentional camera motion to accentuate the speed of the train as it pulled out of the terminal station.

Cliffside Wonders: Exploring Imaihama Beach on the Izu Peninsula
Location: Imaihama Beach, Kawazu, Shizuoka, Japan Timestamp: 06:31 on February 14, 2024
Fujifilm X100V with 5% diffusion filter ISO 3200 for 1/105 sec. at ƒ/8.0 Velvia/Vivid film simulation
I set out from home at 3:30 a.m., driving directly to the Kawazuhama Parking Lot—a mere 10-minute stroll from the southern tip of Imaihama Beach in the town of Kawazu, Shizuoka Prefecture, on the eastern coast of the Izu Peninsula. Kawazu Town boasts numerous parking lots, typically charging a one-time fee of about ¥1,000. However, the Kawazuhama Parking Lot offers the advantage of being free of charge.
To access this parking lot, plan for an approximately 3-hour and 30-minute drive from central Tokyo via expressways. Given the limited parking spaces, especially if you aim to secure a spot for sunrise viewing, it's crucial to depart early and endeavor to arrive before dusk, as the lot tends to fill up rapidly.
After arriving, my border collie and I took the trail from the parking lot to a scenic path along the cliff's top edge, offering breathtaking views of waves crashing below. Approximately halfway through, a concrete staircase protrudes from the cliffs, guiding you down to the coastline. Here, you'll witness sea stacks rising from the sandy beach, providing some nice subjects for seascape photography.
For those opting for train travel, catch the bullet train to Atami Station. Transfer to the Ito Line and make another transfer at Ito Station to the Izu Kyuko Line. Disembark at Imaihama-Kaigan Station and head south, where Imaihama Beach awaits just a 4-minute walk from the station.
While train travel is faster and relatively cost-effective, considering the absence of fuel and toll road expenses, driving remains the optimal choice for sunrise enthusiasts who prefer not to book a hotel or have a large dog as your travel companion.
Should you visit during the Kawazu Cherry Blossom Festival, a mere 10-minute walk from the parking lot will lead you to the Kawazu River. There, you can enjoy a 3.4 km (2.11 mi) stretch of Kawazu cherry blossoms adorning both sides of the riverbank.
Check out my ad-free blog post, where I include Google Maps links to key locations, along with additional information about the the Kawazu Cherry Blossom Festival (https://www.pix4japan.com/blog/20240214-imaihama).

Vermilion Torii of Shirahama Shrine: Gateway to the Sacred
Location: Shirahama, Shimoda, Shizuoka, Japan Timestamp: 07:43 on January 3, 2024
Fujifilm X100V with 5% diffusion filter ISO 3200 for 1/140 sec. at ƒ/8.0 Film simulation: Velvia/Vivid
A torii gate is a formalized gateway arch signifying entrance to a sacred area. Shrines may have one or more torii, such as here at Shirahama Shrine, where there are at least three. When multiple torii are present, the largest one is normally called the “Ichi-no-Torii” (first torii gate) and stands at the sando or approachway to the shrine grounds and courtyard.
Torii may also be found at various points within the precincts of the shrine to indicate increasing levels of sanctitude as one approaches the (本殿・honden), which is often located farthest from the entrance of the shrine grounds and behind the worship hall (拝殿・haiden).
Based on their present-day function, torii express the division between the profane and sacred realms. They are found not only at shrines but also at Buddhist temples, as seen in the famous stone torii of the temple Shitenno-ji in Osaka. However, when used as a map symbol, they generally signify the presence of a Shinto shrine as opposed to a Buddhist temple.
With the rise of Buddhist-Shinto syncretism in the 12th century, Shinto shrines began to appear within the grounds of Buddhist temples. Even then, torii were used to mark the entrances to such shrines. The origin of torii is unclear. In the writings of “The Inventory of the Properties of Otori Jinja in Izumi,” dated 922, there are references to torii that lead some scholars to propose that torii originated in Japan.
Regardless of the origin, torii in Japan share mostly similar basic designs with two upright posts topped by a horizontal cap beam (笠木・kasagi) that extends beyond the posts on either side. Beneath the kasagi, a horizontal tie beam (貫・nuki) is laced around the uprights and links them together.
Among the infinite variety of torii named for unique characteristics or the name of a specific shrine itself, basically all torii can be classified under two major categories: those with straight members, shinmei torii (神明鳥居), and those with curved members, myojin torii (明神鳥居).
The main torii of Shirahama Shrine, as seen in my photo, most closely resembles a myojin classification based on the following observations. See if you can identify these same specifications in the photo!
The top lintel (笠木・kasagi) has a strong upward curve.
The ends of both the top and secondary lintel (島木・shimaki) are cut with a downward slant.
The tie beam (貫・nuki) is straight, rectangular in section, and secured by wedges (楔・kusabi) inserted into each side of the pillars.
A strut covered with a framed inscribed panel (額束・gakuzuka) is attached at the center between the secondary lintel and the tie beam. (The inscription panel in my photo reads “白濱神社・Shirahama-Jinja or Shirahama Shrine in English.)
Finally, myojin torii can be made of stone, wood, or concrete or PVC (in the modern period) and are painted vermilion, although I have seen a few painted black.
For anyone interested in reading more about the different types of torii gates, I have provided links to reliable sources in my latest pix4japan blog post: https://www.pix4japan.com/blog/20240103-shirahama

Yokohamabashi Shotengai: A Resilient Hub in Changing Times
Location: Yokohamabashi, Minami Ward, Yokohama, Japan Timestamp: 18:23 on December 19, 2023
Fujifilm X100V with 5% diffusion filter ISO 3200 for 1/125 sec. at ƒ/6.4 Velvia/Vivid film simulation
Shotengai, the quintessential Japanese shopping street of mom-and-pop retailers found in towns and cities, are deeply rooted in local communities. Often run by multi-generational families, these shops provide daily necessities, services, and actively participate in community events like festivals.
However, since the 1990s, shotengai across Japan have faced a decline due to competition from supermarkets, malls, department stores, and online shopping. Despite these challenges, Yokohamabashi shotengai in Minami Ward, Yokohama, has stood resilient.
Pre-World War II, it was the heart of the community, offering a diverse range of household goods and food. Post-war, it rebuilt itself from ashes, focusing on food and daily necessities during the post-war reconstruction period. Over time, it evolved to include boutiques, produce and fish markets, clinics, cafes, bars, restaurants, specialty shops, and much more.
In the 1960s, Yokohamabashi installed a roof and restricted vehicular traffic for safer foot and bicycle flow. In 2013, the roof was refurbished, enhancing the shopping experience even on rainy and windy days.
Today, spanning 350 meters with 135 shops, Yokohamabashi shotengai faces challenges as elderly owners retire, leading to closures. Despite this, I cherish the hope of continuing to visit for years to come, enjoying shopping, conversing with elderly shopkeepers, capturing street photography, and partaking in seasonal festivals.
Google Maps links to various shops at Yokohamabashi shotengai, references for further reading, and source materials can be found at the latest blog post at pix4japan: https://www.pix4japan.com/blog/20231219-yokohamabashi

Sacred Spaces and Cultural Grace: Navigating Japanese Shrine Etiquette
Location: Shirahama, Shimoda, Shizuoka, Japan Timestamp: 07:40 on January 3, 2024
Fujifilm X100V with 5% diffusion filter ISO 3200 for 1/90 sec. at ƒ/8.0 Film simulation: Velvia/Vivid
Ancient documents dating over 2,400 years reference this shrine, suggesting an age surpassing 2,400 years. Like many Japanese temples and shrines, some structures are reconstructed due to earthquakes, fire, or periodic disassembly for inspection and improvement, ensuring both longevity and the preservation of traditional Japanese building techniques.
The worship hall seen in my photo was last rebuilt in 1860, and the sanctuary on the hill behind the worship hall and housing the deity was reconstructed in 1922.
Visitors during New Year's adhere to traditional steps followed at any time of the year. Regional customs may vary, but general worship practices and etiquettes apply to every shrine.
It is appropriate to dress in a way that is slightly conservative. Just avoid wearing revealing or tight-fitting clothes (such as tank tops, sweats, or workout clothes) out of respect for the cultural setting. Remember, these are sacred sites—not a shopping mall or an amusement park.
When you pass under the torii gate, which marks where the realm of Shinto kami (deity) begins and separates it from the secular world, prepare your mind and your heart, calm yourself, and appreciate everything around you, be it visible or not.
At the torii gate, show your respect by taking your hat off if you wear one and bowing once before passing through.
Be mindful to walk on the left side of the way, as the center of the approach is said to be the “place where the kami pass.”
At the water basin (temizuya or chozuya), purify yourself by scooping water to wash your free hand and then switch the ladle to wash your other hand. Pour some water in your empty hand and rinse out your mouth. Follow the actions of the Japanese around you and will be fine.
Proceed to the main hall for worship. The customary routine involves bowing twice, clapping twice, and bowing once. Make a monetary offering, often a 5-yen coin is used as it symbolizes luck.
Shinto shrines cater to common needs, managing centuries-old traditions and festivals. Japanese embrace diverse traditions without strict religious adherence, enjoying aesthetics like Christian weddings and festivities, and follow Buddhism for matters of the afterlife. These cultural adoptions allow appreciation without religious affiliation.
For those with a keen interest in Japanese approach to religious traditions, I have provided links to useful sources at my latest pix4japan blog post: https://www.pix4japan.com/blog/20240103-shirahama
