[The street names in Monopoly] weren’t picked at random. In the early 1930s, various informal versions of Monopoly were played throughout the northeastern United States, with local street names inserted for each city. The game’s appearance and rules were perfected as it was being played. Around that time, an Atlantic City realtor named Jesse Railford hit upon an innovation: to put not just names but also prices on the properties on the board. Since he knew the lay of the land in his home city, those prices reflected the hierarchy of real estate values at that time.
That hierarchy and those prices were informed by the segregation that was rife in 1930s America. As one of the gateways of the Great Migration in the early 20th century, Atlantic City was a waystation for countless African-Americans leaving behind the stifling oppression of the South for better economic opportunities in the North. However, what they encountered on the way and upon arrival was the same racism, in slightly different form.
Railford played the game with the Harveys, who lived on Pennsylvania Avenue. They had previously lived on Ventnor Avenue and had friends on Park Place—all of which fall into the pricier color categories on the board.
In 1930s Atlantic City, these were wealthy and exclusive areas, and “exclusive” also meant no Black residents. They lived in low-cost areas like Mediterranean and Baltic Avenues; the latter street is actually where the Harveys’ maid called home. In many local hotels at the time, African-Americans were only welcome as workers, not as guests. Atlantic City schools and beaches were segregated.
Belying both the binary prejudices of the time and the sliding price scale of the Monopoly board, Atlantic City back then was in fact a place of opportunity where a diverse range of communities flourished. Black businesses thrived on Kentucky Avenue. Count Basie played the Paradise Club on Illinois Avenue. There was a Black beach at the end of Indiana Avenue. For Chinese restaurants and Jewish delis, people headed to Oriental Avenue. New York Avenue had some of the first gay bars in the U.S.

Chapter 17 kitty & puppy have good senses
semi-written
Another week, another investigation. Sure, Chan feels bad for spying on Yn but it's from a good heart and good intentions. He's protecting you and he doesn't want the same thing to happen like in the past. Chan can still remember it, the first time you brought your used-to-be boyfriend over for a game night. Currently ex-boyfriend.
He was tall, with broad shoulders but a slim body, and greeted everyone warmly. Chan could remember how happy you looked, giddy and enthusiastic. Until halfway through the game and ex-boyfriend Justin's real personality showed itself. Chan was close to winning, having owned all the utility cards and railway cards plus two properties in the green. It was your turn plus Justin, since the both of you were sharing a piece. Chan noticed how focused and attentive you were with the current setup, like you were thoroughly thinking on what to do, with the dice landing on a 4 and a 5, you moved your pieces up nine paces, landing on Kentucky avenue. Thank god though that you and Justin owned two or the three properties of the reds.
“Hey, Shua, want to trade? Illinois Avenue for Park place?” You waved the blue card in your hand with a sly grin and a tiny bat of your eyelashes.
Joshua hummed softly, looking at his deck of cards, one Illinois avenue, States avenue, St. Charles avenue, and the oddest one, he has Broadwalk since he landed on it during the 2nd turn of going pass go.
“What else do I get if I trade my Illinois avenue?” Joshua asks, seriously looking at his cards and what is at stake as he also looks over the other’s cards. Noticing Chan’s  row of hotels on the greens, Seungkwan with two of the light blue properties and one Virginia avenue, Seokmin with both Mediterranean avenue and Baltic avenue despite not having hotels, Soonyoung with one of each property; New York avenue, Ventnor avenue, and Connecticut avenue and Minghao with Marvin Garden and Ventnor avenue. While you and Justin owned the rest of the reds and Tennessee avenue and St. James place.
“Obviously, you could build hotels. Look at Chan’s, all those rows of hotels, plus with a roll of six or higher he, Seokmin, and Soonyoung would definitely land on your place. And you know who’s turn it is after me.” You bat your eyelashes again, trying to get Joshua to take your offer.
“You are making a very tempting offer.”
“Yn.” Justin grabs onto your forearm, pulling closer to his side. “What are you doing offering away Park place? It would be better to keep Park place and negotiate for Broadwalk. With those two we get hotels and we’ll get more money.” Listening to Justin, you look back at the board, shaking your head at what he said.
“Yes. Broadwalk plus Park place are good choices and it costs a lot but by giving away the rest of our reds to Joshua wouldn’t make sense or make any profit. I was going to negotiate with Soonyoung for New York avenue. By combining our orange properties and red properties, it will be more profitable than Boardwalk and Park place alone.”
“No.” Justin shook his head, his eyes squinting and his hand squeezing your forearm tight. “If you really want to do that, wait until the next turn. There will be more to offer by then.”
“But by next turn, we might lose the offer. Chan already has hotels on his properties and Seokmin could end up putting hotels on his’. If you want to win–” His hissing interrupts your sentence, lowering your shoulders slightly as you stare at your boyfriend. “Justin,” your voice coming out in a soft hush tone. His eyes rolling slightly back, letting go of your arm as he stood up from the coffee table, walking away as you set the cards down to go after him.
The rest of the guys stare at you and him from afar, they didn’t see anything wrong with what you said, what you said made a lot of sense. Chan noticed that Seokmin would turn his head back every few seconds, like he was watching to make sure nothing serious was going on, he also noticed Seungkwan fidgeting with his set piece in the palm of his hand and Minghao glimpsing over to the side.
You walked back to the living room with a soft grin on your face, eyes peering afar at where your boyfriend was still hanging back from.
“Are you okay Yn?” Seokmin asks, watching you closely with a saddened expression. "Is everything fine between you guys?"
"Yeah, we're fine. Justin is, he's passionate about winning and he doesn't like being told if he's going to be wrong." You shrug your shoulders, glancing at the dice on the board. Seokmin's gaze meets Seungkwan's and for a silent minute, they glanced at the others and then back at you.
Chan shook his head at the remembrance of that night. Remembering again when you left for a second time to check on Justin and heard the faint shouts from him from the other room. How could a person look harmless but completely different on the inside? He would never understand why you were so patient and caring toward Justin when all he ever did was question your self-morality and integrity.
"He really was a jerk," Chan mumbled to himself. His hands are now in a tight fist on his lap. Starting ahead in a blank faze, a movement in front of him moves, catching his attention. "Oh my gosh. Handsome spectacle guy is here again. Guess he really likes this cafe. " Chan watches from afar, noticing that the handsome spectacle guy wasn't alone and he was with another person wearing a dark gray hoodie and headphones over his ears. Luckily he picked a good day, aka a day that you were working. Getting up from his chair, Chan leisurely strolls over to the front counter, in an attempt to get a closer look at the spectacle guy and perhaps order something to make him look busy. Of course, to Chan’s dismay, he was found out sooner or later, which happened to be the first.

I spent a good chunk of my morning thinking about how some people play chess by mail, sending their moves back and forth in letters over weeks and months, and it got me wondering what would be the most difficult game to play by mail?
I'm thinking Monopoly. How would you even do that? How would you keep track of all the information and dice rolls while preventing players from cheating or moving out of turn? You would need to create what is essentially a physical blockchain, a ledger of every move which would need to be updated and copied and sent out to every player after every decision.
You would also need a way to determine dice rolls so no player could lie and say they rolled exactly what they needed, so I was thinking of creating a list of random rolls at the beginning which the players would move through one at a time, but that would risk making the game deterministic; if everything is predestined from the start, set in stone like prophecy, the you could look forward on the list and figure out exactly who would win. If someone landed in jail and saw that their next roll on the list was doubles, they would definitely roll to get out for free instead of paying. Their strategy would change if they knew all the rolls ahead of time, so maybe there could be an element of randomness, like a table of rolls the players could randomly choose from based on the date given in the postmark of the previous letter in the chain. "The Post Office processed this on November 13th, which means I rolled a five and a one, so that's six."
And then we have the same problem with the Chance and Community Chest cards. If you shuffled the decks and listed them all off in order at the start, then all the players would know whether they're in for a good or bad draw; "I just got out of jail, and there's a ⅙ chance I'm gonna roll a 7 and land on Community Chest which will take me to Boardwalk, but I can't afford to buy it yet, but but I also have Ventnor Avenue, so I could sell it to the guy who has the other two yellows and then Boardwalk is mine!" There would need to be an independent referee who would select cards for the players, or else another pseudo-random table for all 16 Chance and 16 Community Chest cards, "let's see, I landed on Chance with double fives, and on today's date in 1955 it was a waxing gibbous, which means I pick the fourth or eighth card on the list; today's date is odd, which means I pick the fourth, 'go directly to jail, do not pass GO, do not collect $200.' Damn."
And auctions! How would you handle auctions? If a player wanted to auction a property, they would need to alert everyone else and then they'd all have to send their bids to the banker who would then tell them all where the auction stood, and then people could send in new bids, and it would take weeks for all the letters to reach everyone and if any of them got lost in the mail it would delay things even longer; it would be a total logistical nightmare!
I think it could be done.
I'd have to spend a lot of time ironing out the specifics so everything would work smoothly and be as balanced as possible, but it could definitely be done. It would be a test of endurance, and the players would probably lose patience and give up after a few weeks, but I think it would be worth a try.
If not Monopoly, then maybe Risk.
What do you guys think? Thoughts? Suggestions?

Road Trip
Monopoly is derived from The Landlord's Game created by Lizzie Magie in the United States in 1903 as a way to demonstrate that an economy which rewards wealth creation is better than one where monopolists work under few constraints. The game is named after the economic concept of monopoly—the domination of a market by a single entity.
 In 1936, Parker Brothers began licensing the game for sale outside the United States. In 1941, the British Secret Intelligence Service had John Waddington Ltd., the licensed manufacturer of the game in the United Kingdom, create a special edition for World War II prisoners of war held by the Nazis.  Hidden inside these games were maps, compasses, real money, and other objects useful for escaping. They were distributed to prisoners by fake charity organizations created by the British Secret Service.
One common criticism of Monopoly is that although it has carefully defined termination conditions, it may take an unlimited amount of time to reach them. Edward P. Parker, a former president of Parker Brothers, is quoted as saying, "We always felt that forty-five minutes was about the right length for a game, but Monopoly could go on for hours. Also, a game was supposed to have a definite end somewhere. In Monopoly you kept going around and around.
In 1991, Hasbro acquired Parker Bros. and thus Monopoly. Hasbro states that the longest game of Monopoly ever played lasted 1,680 hours (70 days or 10 weeks or 2.3 months). $

TEN NIGHTS IN A BAR-ROOM
1930
Tumblr media
Ten Nights in a Bar-Room or the Deserted Home is a melodrama by William Pratt based on the 1854 novel Ten Nights in a Bar-Room and What I Saw There written by Timothy Shay Arthur. The book is a temperance novel, written expressly to discourage readers from drinking alcohol.
The play was first seen on stage in 1858 at New York’s Chatham Theatre.  The Chatham Theatre or Chatham Street Theatre was on Chatham Street (now Park Row), a few blocks south of the Bowery.  At its opening in 1839, the Chatham featured big-name actors and drama. It was demolished in 1862. By today’s standards, the Chatham would have been considered an off-Broadway Theatre.
Tumblr media
The play was seen in Atlantic City NJ on April 25 and 26, 1930 at the Toy Theatre company at the Boathouse Theatre on Richmond Avenue at the Bay.  It was staged by Dr. Mario Badillo. For this production, their Boathouse Theatre was transformed into a tavern, with sawdust on the floor and audiences sat at café tables. The production was so popular it was extended several times. At the end of the year, it was chosen as a revival to celebrate the Toy Theatre’s 4th Season.
Tumblr media
The timing of this production was especially important. By 1930, America had been dry since 1921, but there was a strong undercurrent for repeal of the Volstead Act.  A theatrical tavern was permitted, while an actual tavern was illegal. Atlantic City was notoriously known as the hub of the rum-running trade during Prohibition, which officially ended in December 1933.
Tumblr media
The Toy Theatre was founded on December 16, 1926 at a home at 111 Belmont Avenue, behind the then-five year-old Ritz-Carlton Hotel. An audience of 100 sat on wooden benches and watched 3 one-act plays. The group was founded by Mexican artist Max Badillo.
Tumblr media
[Editor’s Note: This research surprised me, as my condo at the Ritz overlooks 111 South Belmont Avenue, the Toy’s first home, which is now a parking lot.]
On February 3, 1927, just two months after their inaugural performance, the Toy Theatre received this auspicious letter:
“The news that Atlantic City is to have a new art theatre interests me deeply. I congratulate the people of Atlantic City on the opportunity Toy Theatre is giving them. The presentation of such plays as I understand are to be given cannot fail but benefit and interest a community. I have been watching the Atlantic City papers, and was pleased to see I only hope that I may be permitted to attend your performances when I am in your city.” ~ DAVID BELASCO
Belasco was a theatrical legend who was committed to Atlantic City, bringing his new plays to the Boardwalk regularly. He died in May 1931. It is unknown if he ever attended a Toy Theatre production.
Tumblr media
At the beginning of March 1927, The Toy Players announced that they would move into a new home, located on Richmond Avenue and Thoroughfare. The Inside Thoroughfare was another name for the body of water that separates Atlantic City and Ventnor City. Toy had moved across town, from the ocean to the bay.
Tumblr media
In the mid-1930s they took winter quarters at the Edgewater Hotel, 125 S. South Carolina Avenue [also now a parking lot].
In 1937, founder Badillo transformed the Toy Players into the Vanguard Theatre, essentially a new group at a now disused Masonic Temple on Pennsylvania Avenue. Several shows were staged, when Badillo left Atlantic City for his native Mexico. It was hoped that the Toy and the Vanguard, would continue, but without the financial support of the WPA and lacking Badillo’s leadership, this did not happen. Toy entertained and served Atlantic City for 11 years; Vanguard for less than one.
In 1951, a community theatre, also named Toy Theatre, was established in Margate, but it was not related to the troupe Badillo had created.
Back to the Bar-room....
Tumblr media
The Toy’s was not Atlantic City’s first production of the play. In 1905, the Criterion Repertoire Company came to town and performed the play at Young’s Pier Theatre on March 2nd.
Tumblr media
In May 1931 the first talking film version of the book / play opened in Atlantic City at The Capitol Theatre on Atlantic Avenue.  Although nearly identical, this film was based on an English play by Edwin Waugh, not the play by William Pratt. Audience, however, would scarcely realize the difference.
This was actually the fifth film adaptation, albeit the first sound film.
a 1897 silent short;
a 1901 film, which was broken up into 5 ‘nights’ / short films;
a now-lost 1910 silent movie;
a 1913 film;
a 1915 film titled “Not Much Force” based on one of the ‘nights’;
a 1921 film directed by Oscar Apfel;
a 1926 film featuring an all-black cast,
this 1931 film;
 a 1953 UK TV film.
Of those, the 1897, 1901, 1911, 1915, 1921, and 1953 versions all credited playwright Pratt. The 1901 films were shown in Atlantic City at the Academy of Music, which burned to the ground the following year and was replaced by Atlantic City’s premier new play incubator, the Apollo Theatre.
Tumblr media
The 1921 film, adapted from Pratt’s play by Lillian Case Russell, premiered in Atlantic City at the Colonial Theatre on Atlantic Avenue in February 1922.
Tumblr media
The 1926 ‘all black’ film, which was not based directly on Pratt’s play, opened in Atlantic City at the Royal Theatre, also on Atlantic Avenue, in November 1928.
Tumblr media
On January 20, 1932, the play was revived on Broadway at The Golden Theatre. It was produced by George E. Wintz and directed by Billy Bryant.  It ran 37 performances.

ALIAS JIMMY VALENTINE
1910
Tumblr media
Alias Jimmy Valentine is a four-act play by Paul Armstrong based on the story "A Retrieved Reformation" by O. Henry.
The play tells the story of Lee Randall (aka Jimmy Valentine), who leads a double life; he is a respectable business man during the day, and an infamous safecracker at night.
The play was written by Armstrong in one week, and was onstage just eleven days later.
The original production was produced by Liebler & Co., and after previews in Chicago, opened on Broadway on January 21, 1910 at Wallack’s Theatre, closing in June after 155 performances. It starred H.B. Wallace and featured Laurette Taylor. It was an immediate sensation:
“I unhesitatingly stamp ‘Alias Jimmy Valentine’ as the best play of its type New York has seen.” ~ ALAN DALE, NEW  YORK AMERICAN
“It’s a bully play and holds your interest from start to finish.” ~ ACTON DOYLE, NEW YORK EVENING SUN
Due to the lack of air conditioning in theatres at the time, the play was halted for the summer months, but intended to resume in the fall.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To prepare for their fall engagement, the play was produced near the ocean breezes of the Savoy Theatre on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City for one week starting on August 15, 1910. The first performance was given for the benefit of the Jewish Seaside Home of Ventnor. The play then returned to Wallack’s and played there until mid-November, when it moved lock, stock, and proverbial barrel to Brooklyn; first to the Shubert, then to the Majestic.
Tumblr media
It wasn’t long before London, too, was enjoying the play. It was at the West End’s Comedy Theatre and starred Harry Nicholls as Valentine.
Tumblr media
In October 1911, H.B. Warner performed the play for inmates at San Quentin prison. The summer before the play had been produced in Wisconsin at a camp for the deaf. H.B. Warner returned to Atlantic City in 1913, with his new play The Ghost Breaker. But Valentine still had his best days ahead...
Tumblr media
The play was revived on Broadway in 1921. This time Otto Kruger played the title role at the Gaiety Theatre for 46 performances. After the brief run, the play toured, but did not stop on the Great Wooden Way.
Tumblr media
The play was made into films in 1915, 1920, and 1928. At this point the play is now interchangeable with O Henry’s original story.
Tumblr media
The 1915 silent film starring Robert Warwick was seen in Atlantic City at the Virginia Theatre, located at Virginia Avenue and Boardwalk.
Tumblr media
Later a venue dedicated to road show engagements, it was demolished around 1980.
Tumblr media
The film was seen in London as well, as can be seen in this photo of the Empire Cinema in Coldharbour Lane. In August 1915, playwright Paul Armstrong died. He would not live to see future films and revivals of his play.
Tumblr media
A 1920 film adaptation starring Bert Lytell played in Atlantic City at the City Square Theatre on Atlantic Avenue across from City Hall. This venue started life as the Embassy Theatre, but was also named the Beach. It was the last cinema to operate in Atlantic City (until the relatively recent opening of an IMAX venue), staying open as an adult house until it was damaged by fire around 1990.
Tumblr media
A 1928 version starring William Haines was first seen in Atlantic City at the Strand Theatre on the Boardwalk in February 1929.
Tumblr media
By March the film was screening at the Capitol Theatre; in April at the Rialto and the Aldine; and by May at the Lyric. In July it returned to cinemas and added the Liberty to its list of AC cinemas. In the 1920s, there was no shortage of venues in the shore resort, and this film (and indeed the entire Valentine franchise) was extremely popular.
Tumblr media
In 1936, the Jimmy Valentine franchise reinvented itself with a film titled The Disappearance of Jimmy Valentine. In Atlantic City, the film was first presented at the Hollywood Theatre, which called itself “The Theatre Beautiful”.
Tumblr media
Between 1938 and 1939 the play / story / films inspired an NBC radio series of the same name. Bert Lytell (a former screen Valentine) and James Meighan played Valentine of the airwaves. In Atlantic City, the show was heard at 7pm on Monday nights over WJZ.
Tumblr media
In 1942, a sequel film titled Affairs of Jimmy Valentine starred Dennis O’Keefe as the title character. Naturally, Atlantic City audiences saw the film, first at the Astor (formerly the Liberty, later the Towne), then at the Hollywood, both on Atlantic Avenue. In 1943, the film returned to AC at the New Palace (later the Charles) - again on Atlantic Avenue.
Tumblr media
In 1985 the story inspired a PBS TV film titled “O. Henry’s Jimmy Valentine” adapted by Paul Lally.
Tumblr media
Despite the original play not being a musical, it did inspired sheet music of the incidental music. But in 1988, O Henry’s story Alias Jimmy Valentine (aka I Love You Jimmy Valentine) was adapted as full length musical by none other than former porn star Jack Wrangler, with music by Bob Haber and lyrics by Hal Hackady.
youtube
It was produced off-Broadway at Musical Theatre Works. In 1989, NAMT presented it as part of their festival. Two years later it was given a staged reading in San Diego.

we buy all kinds of houses in Massachusetts
The Weekly Homebuyer's List within the state capital Post catalogs residential property sales in Colorado. The Homebuyer's List for the week off could twenty fourth destroyed solely sixty-two sales for all of politician County, CO. The low range of sales might not surprise several within the current market, however, a more in-depth examination of the matter reveals an odd inequality in housing costs. it's going to be easier and a bit a lot of fun to think about today's market as a Monopoly
Tumblr media
Where did cash|the cash|the money} go? might it have simply "evaporated" out of our money system? the $64000 truth of wherever this money has gone and goes is therefore grim that it's on the far side the scope of this property article.
Tumblr media
What is happening at once is that the centralized is unnaturally supports the $64000 Estate market to stop a housing value free fall. it's exploitation remunerator bucks to try to to therefore. presently the sole entity shopping for up mortgages is that the Fed, and therefore the sole varieties of mortgages it'll purchase area unit people who meet office limits. this office limit in our state is formally $406,250, except for this year solely, the Fed can purchase mortgages up to $417,000. The Fed is printing up the cash it uses to shop for those mortgages. A monopoly is another time instructive - the govt. prints and hands out cash in step with sure rules. However, during this case, there area unit rules that build the sport unwinnable for everybody, except maybe people who area unit receiving the freshly written cash. In the end, if you're taking part in this game you need to leave the taking part in the board along with your taking part in a piece within the safe jail and check out to ride it out and hope you do not roll doubles and got to start off.
Tumblr media
One example of the continued value collapse may be a direct the Sapphire purpose section of chateau Rock that antecedently sold-out for $1,195,000 in 2007. This year, the investor took the property back in a very proceeding and resold the house for $500,000. Thus, another $695,000 has as if by magic disappeared from the board. Why the low sales figure? the customer got a government-backed loan, the sole sort that's truly on the market.
Tumblr media
With this outrigged game of Monopoly, it's going to be exhausting to search out players which is what's happening currently. the top results of this unnaturally strained, the government-controlled market may be a forceful reduction in home sales. at the same time as the Fed frantically prints new cash, it cannot match the non-public sector finance that existed solely some years past. An associate in a Nursing examination of historical knowledge from the Homebuyer's List quickly shows that the housing market has dried up. it's not possible to still take Monopoly cash off the board, force values to be equalized, then expect a player to shop for Ventnor Avenue once he lands on that.
