Our Plans For (After) Life
Havelock is older than him. What it means is hard to think about.
A G-rated Drumknott/Vetinari double drabble. Lots of non-sexual intimacy and a pillow talk about death.
Read on AO3.

i don't ship vetvimes romantically or sexually but i DO constantly think about "sooner or later we're all someone's dog." absolutely unhinged comparison for angua to make and absolutely unhinged way to phrase it. vimes may not be in love with vetinari or even attracted to him at all (vimes reads as a total straightie to me tbh) but pterry said make no mistake he IS that man's dog. and yeah. he is

I love when Vetinari messes up a common saying and Drumknott whispers the correct lingo to him
And i'm thinking, what if (similarly to how Vetinari consciously got poisoned to give Vimes enrichment) he makes a point to mix up the sayings to keep Drumknott attentive and make him feel useful

The only time we ever got an age range for Drumknott is when he's described by William de Worde as being a young man in The Truth, which by its definition means he was anywhere between 18 and 25 years old during the events of the story, but it's never specified how old he actually is.
Drumknott canonically being a young man is wild to think about since we also know The Truth takes place approximately 4 years after the events of Men at Arms, which is when he makes his first introduction to the series as just a regular palace clerk. So, with all that in mind, it is not entirely out of the realm of possibility to think that Drumknott started working under Vetinari when he was an older teen and then became his secretary when he turned 18.
Granted, Drumknott is excellent at what he does so he was always a shoe in for the position, but even so, Vetinari really hired this kid and then later went "Yes, I trust this teenager with my life. I’m going to promote him to be in charge of all the files."

Some stuff featuring Vetinari.
I love when people draw him with longer hair (I personally always imagined it to be short), so I like to headcanon him having had longer hair in the early books and prior to that!

Vetinari is fascinating to me. He sees the Thud board and views all the pieces to better understand the game. His whole life is puzzles, decisions, and being hyper aware.
As I read through the Disc books, I can feel the moments so heavily when it looks like he is taking a break. Sure, it comes with poison, head trauma, being in enemy lands, or the trust in a con man, but he is slowly allowing people in. He is relinquishing control. He may have already solved the mystery, but he isn't getting any younger and now has people to trust to do this, and they need practice.
I know it is a common joke that in FOC Vetinari let the investigation go on as enrichment for Vimes, but it was also a trust exercise. It wasn't only Vimes having to do more work. Drumknott had to keep the paperwork going, and I know we get so little of him in the book, but from the sound of it, this is as much a test for Vetinari's clerks as it is Vimes.
He even starts to allow a body double to take his station. He lets himself out of his own prison. I am sure he went out disguised before, but he let's people he trust in on it if they are clever enough to figure it out.
I am emotional about this tyrant finally letting himself be open and having a good time. We can see what a dork he is in the past; painting tiger faces and even in the present with his don't let me detain you. I bet Vetinari is that quiet kid who says the funniest things you ever heard if you stopped and listened to him closely enough.

[Vetinari:] 'Indeed, if a poor man will spend a year in prison for stealing out of hunger, how high would the gallows need to be to hang the rich man who breaks the law out of greed?’
‘I would like to reiterate, sir, that I buy all my own paperclips,’ said Drumknott urgently.
‘Of course, but in your case I am pleased to say that you have a brain so pristine that it sparkles.'

For a guy who never really shows interest in anyone Vetinari sure gets shipped with a lot of people huh!
Inspiration image and the names the hands belong to under the cut

Apparently this is a still from the move "Malena", I found it on Pinterest I think
From right to left the hands belong to: Sybil Ramkin, Lord Downey, Moist Von Lipwig, Sam Vimes, Lady Margolotta, and Rufus Drumknott. Leonard da quirm is in the background inventing a blowtorch

The Patrician smiled again and steepled his fingers. "In short, Drumknott, a certain amount of harmless banditry amongst the lower classes is to be smiled upon if not actively encouraged for the health of the city, but what should we do when the highborn and wealthy take to crime? Indeed, if a poor man will spend a year in prison for stealing out of hunger, how high would the gallows need to be to hang the rich man who breaks the law out of greed? -Terry Pratchett (Snuff)

Okay, but what does Vetinari do during Hogwatch? Does he go on business as usual? Do the clerks?
Because I feel like some otherworldly entity with villinous things in mind for Ankh-Morpork try to do an evil version of A Christmas Carol on him. Like, every year they try and every year he scares them away by just not putting up with it at all.
And Drumknott is the complete opposite of Bob Cratchett in every way.

After recently rereading The Truth, I was reminded how much of an unstoppable machine Drumknott is because little man got bonked on the head, had his arm nearly torn off and suffered a good amount of blood loss, but the moment Vetinari’s name was cleared he returned to the palace probably looking like a goddamn mummy with all his bandages ready to get back to work and Vetinari LET HIM!
I know Igor is good at what he does but damn at least let yourself rest for more than a few days.

Hi!! Firstly I just want to say that your art is absolutely gorgeous; I love the way that you bring the discworld characters to life.
If you still take requests, I was wondering if you could draw another Drumknott or one of him and Vetinari in the Oblong Office - your design for him with the glasses is very sweet, I love he <3
No worries if not, either way I hope you have a great day!!
Hello! Thank you very much!! :) I actually really want to do a fully rendered painting of Vetinari and Drumknott in the Office, but I can't say yet when I'll have the motivation to actually do it. Until then, here is a full concept for a Drumknott look (plus Vetinari for good measure). And I hope you're having a great day yourself!
