A still shot of a scene from the televised series, The Gilded Age. The character of Ada (played by Cynthia Nixon) is wearing a dress that looks a lot like the House of Worth gown below. The bodice and sleeves are a bit different, as is the pattern of the center panel of the dress.
House of Worth • Evening ensemble • c. 1888 • Designer Charles Frederick Worth • French, born England
I think I’ve mentioned this a few times but I thought it’d be cool to base Penelope Spectra on the Blood Countess who is said to bathe in blood to stay young and beautiful. So long story short, I’m making her a vampire rather than a ghost since they can drain vitality from people through touch too which feels more in line with her character. She CAN drink blood and enjoys a good murder now and then, but for the most part Spectra is after young and beautiful people to drain their life energy which she can do in plain sight...
To do that this version of Spectra often hosts elaborate parties to lure in potential victims chosen for their looks and not just their social status or offers them council as a high ranking noblewoman. Beneath that caring facade though, Spectra is a cold-blooded murderer who will stop at nothing to get what she wants, hence the symbolism of her blood-soaked gown almost turning black as her heart from stepping over the lifeless bodies of countless victims.
I have absolutely zero business imagining Yule Ball designs since I’m not even remotely close to writing that chapter (which I would like to but we’re not even two chapters in) but also I have zero self control so here have them anyways.
