so there's this old cartoonist i like, WK Haselden right? bit of a born curmudgeon, if you've ever seen those old vintage comics that are like "damn these modern women things used to be better in the 80s! the 1880s that is!!!" thats usually a haselden, maud of the 80s vs gladys of today etc

im forever FASCINATED at all the slice o life satire cartoons he does bc there's like, the regular shit to be grumpy (flappers driving cars, ladies hats are too big etc) about but there's also comics of fads that i could not BEGIN to fathom what it woulda been like to live through them through the eyes of this one dude like

?? was there a live meat/game meat trend in 1906??

this one's captioned "bull fighting up to date" like ????? was there a safety craze amongst bullfighters in '06???

i... i guess this one's mocking vaudeville??? like variety acts where you do a bunch of wild bullshit whilst playing an instrument perhaps?? tf was up in 1921??

man i didnt realize ping pong was such a thing of contention in..... 1922??

Okay here’s today’s Haselden update re: vintage comics:

There’s a distinct category of comics that are definitely just old-man-yells-at-clouds-but-about-contemporary-fashion but since I personally don’t have a lens into the zeitgeist of the belle epoch through to the first world war, I gotta guess what the absolute fresh fuck is he complaining about 

cus some of ‘em are obvious, hatpins and hemlines and all but others I have to assume they’re just fanciful imaginings bc ????????

this man out there predicting the punk fashion movement a good century before its time but also like what the FUCK was this even parodying off of??

honestly this would make a hilarious level of sense re current social distancing but I’m just generally sad its harder to buy a hatpin than you’d think. It’s windy out here in the city and I’d rather NOT have my fancy ostritch plume hat fly off at the hint of a breeze
