(ARTS347) Project #2: Blue Law Ad Campaign for the Ad Council (Progress) & Media #1 on UX/UI: 99% Invisible Podcast

Week Five

Project #2 Progress: Mood Boards & Archetype and Persona Study

I am currently working on transitioning from Project #1 to Project #2. I'm making an effort to document my creative process in my blog posts for Interaction design, just like I do for my Visual and Verbal design work. For Project #2, I aim to research a Blue Law and create an ad campaign with the Ad Council. Blue laws are regulations that restrict certain commercial activities on Sundays and have been a part of U.S. legal history since the colonial period. These laws, also known as "Sunday Closing Laws," typically prohibit specific activities on Sundays. They were originally intended to discourage activities considered morally offensive, such as gambling or the consumption of alcohol.

The Blue Laws of the 19th century were laws passed by states and local governments that prohibited businesses from operating on Sundays. Although these laws were based on Christian beliefs, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that they do not violate the First Amendment's establishment clause. While many of these blue laws have been repealed since the 1960s, some laws, such as those banning the sale of alcohol on Sundays, remain in force. As part of this project, Step 1 involves conducting research on the Blue Laws of South Carolina and selecting one to create an ad campaign with the ad council. Step 2 is to create mood boards and sketches to articulate your ideas and brainstorm. Step 3 involves creating deliverables, including billboard designs and mockups with a generally 2:1 ratio (e.g., 24x12' or 48x14' or 12'x36'). Three key images for those billboards need to be developed, representing text-heavy, image-heavy, and text-and-image balance. This visual content will be used in website design prototypes using Figma (the mockups are an iMac Pro 1280x720 px and an iPhone 13 Pro 390x833 px).

This week, I focused on researching and selecting Blue Law for the campaign. I started by researching the Blue Laws of South Carolina. I encountered some difficulty finding direct information on these laws through a Google search, so I turned to CHAT GPT for assistance. I asked CHAT GPT to compile a list of potential Blue Laws in South Carolina, along with citations and links to the relevant websites for further research. During this search, I discovered a Blue Law that prohibited hunting on public land in South Carolina on Sundays. However, I later found out that this law had been repealed on May 26, 2023. Despite this setback, I continued my research and found an exception to the repeal, which stated that hunting turkeys on public lands on Sundays was still prohibited due to the declining population of wild turkeys in the state, as reported by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. I then delved into gathering visual inspiration for the ad campaign. I created a mood board reflecting the vintage, national park-inspired, and playfully rugged art style that I aim to achieve. My inspiration came from images of South Carolina national parks, as well as vintage advertisements promoting visits to the state and national parks in the US. Additionally, I drew inspiration from two influential ongoing ad campaigns by the Ad Council: Smokey the Bear and Give a Hoot Don't Pollute. These campaigns targeted children and parents with memorable, playful, and environmentally conscious messages and illustrations. My goal for the ad campaign is to target children who are part of the hunting culture in South Carolina or are just beginning to explore hunting, while also reaching their parents. This decision is influenced by my personal background growing up in a rural area in New Jersey, where hunting was a significant part of the local culture. While my family did not partake in hunting, many of my classmates did, often taking time off school for hunting trips or to celebrate obtaining their hunting license at a young age. With this in mind, I aim to engage young children in South Carolina who are involved in hunting, as well as their parents.

To achieve my goal, I researched audience archetypes and brand personality. I looked into the Smokey the Bear, and Give a Hoot Don't Pollute Ad Campaigns to find which archetypes matched each campaign. My research, with the help of CHAT GPT, led me to conclude that Smokey the Bear falls under the Sage and the Caregiver archetypes. His primary role is to protect and nurture the environment. The famous message, "Only YOU can prevent forest fires," appeals to our sense of responsibility to care for and protect the natural world. The Caregiver archetype aligns with Smokey's mission of preventing harm to forests and wildlife, as it is driven by compassion and the desire to help others. Smoky the Bear also falls under the Sage, as he shares knowledge and wisdom about fire safety and environmental protection, seeking to empower individuals with the knowledge to make wise choices. The "Give a Hoot, Don't Pollute" ad campaign also features a mascot named Woodsy the Owl, who falls under the Caregiver and the Innocent archetypes. The campaign aims to nurture and protect the environment, encouraging individuals, especially children, to care for nature by not littering. It appeals to the responsibility to help and protect something vulnerable, aligning with the Caregiver's values of compassion, nurturing, and service. The message also reflects the Innocent archetype, as it promotes a vision of a clean, pure world free from pollution. Woodsy Owl’s simple, hopeful slogan encourages positive, straightforward action to preserve a pristine and unspoiled natural world. The Innocent archetype is about optimism, simplicity, and maintaining purity, much like the campaign's goal to prevent pollution. Considering both of these ad campaign archetypes, I have chosen to have my ad campaign embody the caregiver and the innocent archetypes. I aim to create a mascot for the campaign that embodies the caregiver archetype regarding protecting wild turkeys and nurturing their environment for the population to thrive. The campaign's message of preventing harm to turkeys and wildlife aligns with the caregiver archetype's values of compassion and the desire to help others. This ad campaign also reflects the innocent archetype, emphasizing the themes of purity, nature, and wildlife protection. I hope to create a simple, hopeful slogan that encourages positive, straightforward action to preserve the habitat and population of wild turkeys in the State of South Carolina. The campaign will spread the message that the turkey population is declining and the need to protect the species.

When deciding on the brand personality for the campaign, I've chosen to focus on embodying the traits of sincerity, competence, and ruggedness. The overall message should be sincere and heartfelt, emphasizing the importance of protecting nature and promoting responsible behavior. The aim is to encourage responsibility, honesty, trust, and care for the environment, specifically focusing on the preservation of turkeys in the state of South Carolina. The campaign will also reflect the trait of competence by promoting education for both children and adults about the significance of turkey preservation and the importance of following hunting regulations. Educating people about hunting and environmental laws can have a significant positive impact on the environment. Finally, the campaign will also embody the trait of ruggedness due to its association with the outdoors, forests, and environmental safety regulations. There is a rugged element to the brand personality of the campaign. The mascot should represent the wilderness and the need for strength and resilience in protecting the wild turkey population.

For this campaign project, I decided to primarily focus on the first target audience group: children. From the information I gathered during my research for my campaign's archetype and brand personality, I developed three different personas covering various ages ranging from 9-12, various races, and genders of kids located in various regions of the state. The first persona I developed is named Ethan Robinson. Ethan is an energetic middle schooler from Easley, South Carolina. He loves spending time outdoors, especially with his dad, learning about hunting and survival skills. He’s been excited to go on his first turkey hunt but is still trying to grasp the importance of protecting the environment. Ethan enjoys playing video games but prefers being outside in nature, where he feels like an explorer. My second persona is named Sofia Martinez. Sofia is from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and is in the 4th grade at Socastee Elementary School. She loves animals and dreams of becoming a wildlife biologist when she grows up. She’s curious about hunting because her brother and dad talk about it, but she’s more focused on how to protect the animals. She has a deep connection to nature, enjoys camping, and spends a lot of time learning about local wildlife. My third and final child persona is named Jaylen Davis. Jaylen is a middle school student who attends Hemingway Middle School in Florence, South Carolina. He is a quiet, observant kid who enjoys learning about the history of South Carolina and the role of hunting in the state’s culture. He doesn’t hunt yet but is intrigued by it because of his uncle. He cares deeply about preserving the state’s natural beauty and wants to find a balance between supporting traditional hunting and protecting animals. All three of these personas come from different parts of the state, have a connection to the blue law in some way, and possess goals and frustrations, which can be utilized to better address and decide the message of the ad campaign. To better address both target audiences, I decided to conduct a separate persona study focusing on the parents of these child persona examples. This way, I gain an idea of the parents' perspective rather than just focusing on kids alone. My first parent persona is named Jonathan Robinson, and he is the father of Ethan. Jonathan is born and raised in Easley, South Carolina. He is passionate about nature, environmental conservation, and responsible hunting. He loves spending time outdoors with his family and teaches his children to respect the environment and follow the rules, including hunting regulations. While he believes in traditional outdoor activities like hunting, he understands the importance of protecting wildlife for future generations. My second parent persona is named María Martinez, and she is the mother of Sofia. María is from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. She is a nurturing mother who loves teaching her kids about the beauty of the natural world. She encourages them to explore different activities, from camping and hiking to learning about wildlife. Although her husband and son are hunters, she leans more toward wildlife protection and teaching her children about the importance of preserving nature for future generations. My third and final parent persona is named Marcus Davis, and he is the father of Jaylen. Marcus is from Florence, South Carolina. He works hard to provide for his family and is proud of his son’s interest in the outdoors. Although he is not a hunter himself, Marcus respects the tradition of hunting passed down by his brother. He focuses more on teaching Jaylen about fishing, camping, and appreciating South Carolina’s natural beauty, but he supports Jaylen’s curiosity about hunting while emphasizing the importance of following wildlife conservation laws.

From this point in the project, I need to create an effective tagline for the campaign, develop a mascot and a design style, and have three billboard designs ready for group critique by next week's class. I am excited and a bit nervous, but I look forward to taking on this project as I feel more confident after completing extensive research.

Media #1: 99% Invisible - Design with Kare: Influential Graphics of Apple's Early Macintosh Computers

This week, we had our first media assignment for the course. Students were required to read an article and listen to a podcast from 99% Invisible about Susan Kare, one of the most influential graphic designers from the Apple Macintosh generation. I particularly loved the photo of Susan Kare sitting on a desk chair, with her 80s curly hair, jeans, and sweatshirt, and the old computers in the background. It really captures the essence of graphic designers even today! Susan Kare is an American graphic designer known for creating some of the earliest computer graphics and icons. Her designs were instrumental in developing the graphic user interface, making early computers more accessible and engaging for non-tech users.

Some of Susan Kare's more recognizable designs include the smiling start-up icon and the bomb icon, which was an engaging way to notify the user of a system error. These icons gave more personality to the computer, making the user experience more engaging rather than just having users engage with words or code. These iconic graphics ultimately allowed Apple computers to stand apart from other computers on the market at the time, including the text-based PCs. Despite these icons making the computer experience more impactful and engaging, not many users knew at the time that Kare was responsible for the creation of these graphics.

The new form of digital pixel art laid the foundation for several modern digital tools still in use today, including the command symbol, lasso tool, and paint bucket. It's mind-blowing to think that Susan Kare was responsible for creating tools that are still used in my work today. It's fascinating to imagine whether we would still have these tools if it weren't for her genius. In addition to digital tools, Kare also created two fonts: Chicago and Gothic. These fonts were incorporated into the original Mac operating systems, which is a fascinating fact. Kare's work extends beyond Apple, reaching companies like IBM and Microsoft. She was responsible for creating the notepad and control panel icons that have since evolved, but still trace back to her work. According to the article, she also contributed to the icons of Facebook and Pinterest, which have evolved but can be traced back to her designs. It's incredible to think that she was responsible for the initial look of these two applications, as I use Pinterest so often for design inspiration.

In the early 1980s, a friend encouraged Susan Kare to apply for a position at Apple. She started her work by sketching pixelated designs in a gridded notebook. Her designs were limited to 16x16 and 32x32 pixel grids, similar to mosaics and needlepoint. Steve Jobs recognized the need for more user-friendly computer interfaces, and Susan Kare's pixel designs played a crucial role in making personal computing more accessible to non-technical individuals. Her designs not only appealed to non-technical users but also caught the attention of artists, musicians, and marketers.

It's important to recognize how minimalist design and Susan Kare's work are closely connected. Pixel design had its limitations at the time, but Kare used this to her advantage by creating a purposeful, simplified minimalist approach. This minimal style of design sparked a movement in visual communications, often seen on platforms like Pinterest, gifs, and emojis. Understanding Kare's impact involves discussing her recognition and legacy in the graphic design industry. Her work has been showcased in museums like the Museum of Modern Art in NYC (MOMA) and has received awards from the AIGA. Her work is also available for purchase on her website for those interested in the early Mac era of design.

The main takeaway from this media assignment is that Susan Kare laid the foundation of pixel art and ultimately changed the way we think of graphic user interfaces. Her pixel art laid the foundation for many digital media tools we still continue to use today in modern digital communications. Her work ultimately changed the way average users approached the Apple computer back in the 80s, which has contributed to the success of the Macintosh. Kare's story must continue to be told in digital and communicative spaces because the computer would not be what it is today without her work and contribution to the field.

Suite Recording: You Need A Cup Of "Joe" Before Podcasting

It's a rite of passage that the older generation seems to throw shade on the generation safely ensconced in young adulthood.  Baby Boomers are often dismissive of Millennials, questioning their work ethic and toughness while ignoring the intrinsic weaknesses of their own group. A stellar example of the strengths of the Millennial generation is Joe Gangemi, co-owner of Suite Recording, an audio and video podcast studio in South Jersey.  Joe explains: "Suite Recording provides the space and the service where creators can conveniently launch, record, and produce audio and video content for their target audience. Teens Designing & Selling Streetwear

Some high schoolers say they started their brands for the profits. Others are jumping into streetwear in pursuit of a creative outlet. A large cardboard box covered in Chinese customs labels sits in the attic of Jack Lee’s parent’s home in the Roscoe Village neighborhood on Chicago’s North Side. The lanky teenager slices into the box and produces a pair of black basketball shorts adorned with white bolts of lightning. He smiles as he traces the mesh material with his fingers.

Lee is the founder of the streetwear brand Snker Method. He is one of many high schoolers in Chicago — most of them boys — who have started their own clothing companies in recent years, selling everything from hoodies to ski masks. The teens operate out of homes in all corners of the city and its suburbs, mostly selling to their high school peers, but also shipping clothes to young people as far away as New Jersey or California. Lee’s goal is to make a million dollars in sales and eventually get hired at Nike. “I want to make a mark on the world.”

Lee, the budding businessman, sketches his designs before he sends them to his manufacturers in China. Shipping costs are a nightmare, but Lee says it’s still cheaper than manufacturing on American soil. He puts the lightning bolt shorts up on his website for $60, then immediately marks them down to $35 — a sales trick he says he doesn’t like to tell people about. Over on the South Side, designer Jamari Jackson is selling his t-shirts for $15.

Jackson has set up a pop-up shop outside Kenwood Academy High School where he is a senior. Kanye West’s Good Morning blares from a small speaker as seniors mill around the folding table Jackson set up, signing each other’s new t-shirts in rainbow-colored markers. Once class lets out, customers flood Jackson’s pop-up. One kid calls his mom to ask permission to buy one of the shirts — a white tee with the words “See No Evil” written in faded black letters on the front. Two clothing designers who also go to Kenwood show up to check out the competition.

Keyon Hackle and Jacob Hunter, who runs a brand named CLRVNT, did a recent pop-up of their brand, where they gave out a bunch of free clothes to students. Several months ago, the teens also gave out a bunch of free samples to their teachers, who wore their CLRVNT swag to school.“We’re only in our first year and we’ve already generated about a quarter million in sales,” Hackle says. “So I can see us on that path to making millions of dollars.” Aside from Hackle and Hunter, Jackson can name at least five other streetwear brand owners who go to Kenwood. They have a little bit of a rivalry going on.

“At the end of the day, it is a market, so there’s always naturally going to be that competition,” Jackson says. “But we kind of work around each other.” While this friendly rivalry drives Jackson, brand owner Tevence Smith over on the West Side says he’s in the streetwear market to create art. Smith runs a brand named Oswalt. His earliest designs were heavy with lightning bolts and clouds, inspired by the Greek God Zeus. But Smith says his clothes also tell the story of the Black community in Austin, the West Side neighborhood he calls home.

“Clothes mean a lot to us,” Smith says. “Whether it’s the way you tie your shoes, whether it’s the way you wear your pants. Clothes [are] a way to express yourself, a way to be free.”Free from the problems plaguing his people, he says, like gun violence and racism. The teen looks up to Virgil Abloh, a designer from Rockford, Illinois, who made a name for himself by melding streetwear with luxury fashion as the artistic director of menswear for Louis Vuitton.

“A lot of the clothes he makes are beyond clothes,” Smith says. “It’s art pieces. And that’s how I like to look at my clothes as well.”Abloh passed away in 2021. But Smith sometimes looks up videos of his fashion shows on YouTube for inspiration.
