There’s nothing quite like the feeling of scrolling through history-geek Pinterest and spotting names like “Nicole”, “Leslie,” and the like, my brain perking up with interest as I zoom over to read, and then immediately having my hopes dashed as they all turn out to be old-timey men.

This is only somewhat soothed by the small but very existent array of stories that say so and so was a famous doctor or general who had a long and storied career…allowing them to retire to the countryside as a free woman and/or live out their life in whatever is their true gender (trans-inclusive)

A Fellow Writer Who Needs Help

So, I really love to write and I am a huge fan of the FFXV universe. I have written tons of little snaps for fanfic’s and am full of idea’s. However, I may be a bit too shy to post any of it. I have posted two stories on AO3, but I am so uncertain if it is anything good, I constanly keep thinking to delete them. Do you guys, any fellow writers maybe or other lovely people, have any advice for me?

When I was tasked to write this blog, unconsciously, this instigated my “hashtag” thought process which came naturally to me. As I started reading chapter 2 of the mediated construction of reality, Couldry and Hepp (2017), it made me reflect deeply on how media has been deeply interwoven in my social world and inspired me to conduct a mini social experiment with my parents to test certain theories.

Before I elucidate further on the social experiment, I would like to share certain insights I have gained from this reading. Couldry and Hepp postulates that media is deeply interwoven in the social world, and thus, “mediatising” our social world which means that our social realities are constantly and continuously shaped by media, They comprehend communication to be alluded to any form of symbolic interaction like structured social norms or everyday practices. Hence, this made me ponder about how although we are experiences the same culture and environment, there is the possibility of different social realities as a consequence of mediatised communication.

Relating back to the mini social experiment I did with my parents, they are not well versed with technology, hence they have minimal interaction with digital media and prefer to resort to traditional media. On the other hand, my life revolves around social media especially since I am interning in the digital marketing sector. Thus, since my parents and I modes of interactions are opposite each other, I decided to test whether our social realities are different even though we live together. The first task we did was to type a message to my sister informing her that we will be having dinner today at home. My parents immediately called her the normal way, while I left her a Whatsapp message spamming emoticons, stickers and abbreviations like “ASAP”, “LOL”. It was quite apparently that our verbal and non verbal communication was distinctive.

The next task was to keep yourself preoccupied for two hours with any form of entertainment. The first thing my parents did was to switch on the television and lie on the sofa watching it. In the meantime, I watched Netflix and used Instagram concurrently. As I looked up from my phone, computer, I wondered why my parents were just focusing watching television, when in fact, during commercial breaks, they could actually use their phones and use Facebook or Youtube. Curious, I asked my dad for the rationale behind this thought. He replied me, “ well, why do I need to multitask ? It’s good to concentrate on just ONE thing”.

The last task was ordering food at our favourite diner, HaiDiLao. I decided to record a time lapse video of us so that I could watch it later at home. To me the video was quite an eye opener because I felt that simple actions that I deemed “normal” were actually taken for granted. For instance, when we were ordering, I would immediately reach for the ipad whereas my parents will order by raising their hands. As we were waiting for our food, my sister and I were constantly on our phones, while my parents were chatting with each other and making conversation with the waitress. As I reviewed our past three activities, it really made me think about the paradox of the social world mentioned by Cauldry and Hepp. We know that we live in just one material world, we “cannot individually or collectively choose another world in which we prefer to act, but the specific and (relatively) stable features of the social world in which we live are themselves part of the construction that institutions stive to sustain”. It indelibly exemplifies how although we are connected, our social realities can be a stark contrast from each other because we individuals are mediatised by various forms of media which shapes our communication and ideologies process. Simple daily tasks like entertainment, personally, I feel that I like to engage in activities concurrently, and socialise if not I would feel ostracised from the world. The constant crave for connectivity can be a double edged sword. Is it a sad reality or not? To be honest, in some ways people might think it is but it is just a life that I have grown accustomed to. A social reality mediatised.

Lumipad ka lang at huwag mo hayaang hatakin ka nila pababa Huwag mo hayaang kainin ka ng sakit, lamunin ka ng takot, at pangunahan ka ng kaba. Palagi mong tatandaan,  Hindi mali ang magmahal. Hindi rin mali magbigay ng sobra. At lalong hindi maling sumubok nang sumubok Dahil minsan ka lang magkakaroon ng pagkakataon para magmahal. Kaya sana pag nagmahal ka,  Hayaan mo na kahit sobra. Hayaan mo na kahit hindi ka sinuklian. Hayaan mo na kahit hindi nila ibinalik. Dahil dadating ang araw, Ang mga bagay na ibinigay mo,  ay babalik rin sa’yo at lahat ‘yun matatanggap mo. Kahit hindi mo hilingin.  Dahil sa listahan ng mga karapat- dapat makatanggap ng sobra, Ikaw ang unang una.
