I have a couple of random Dark Academia/Secret History-ish movie recommendations that I’ve been meaning to talk about:

The first is The Blackcoat’s Daughter, a 2017 horror movie that I’m recommending for its serious winter-at-Hampden vibes. It takes place at an isolated boarding school that’s closed for winter vacation. There are only two students left on campus -- one’s there because she wanted to spend winter break with her boyfriend, and the other is...well, you’ll see. This is a horror movie, so things get grisly at the end but before then, you’ll love the visuals of the empty, snowbound campus and deserted dorms that’ll have you thinking of Richard after the twins drove away on that frozen December morning.

Speaking of winter break, the next movie is Metropolitan, Whit Stillman’s 1990 indie classic. You know how Francis spent part of his Christmas vacation in New York City? Well, the kids in Metropolitan are the crowd he would’ve been hanging out with. A group of wealthy New York college kids are home in the city for the Christmas “debutante season” and they pass the time by attending black-tie balls, languishing in their parents’ Upper East Side apartments, and engaging in endless cocktail-party banter about everything from Jane Austen to economic theory to the sexual dalliances of their social set. There’s a Richard Papen-esque character who joins the group by chance and must take pains to hide his humble background from his wealthy new friends, but that’s about as close as Metropolitan comes to a plot. You don’t really watch this movie for the story, but for the aesthetic.

I have to caveat that Metropolitan is easy to dislike or find baffling because it was obviously filmed in New York and everyone’s wearing contemporary clothes, but you can’t really figure out when it’s supposed to take place. In fact, Stillman supposedly wanted to make a period film, but he had no money for costumes or sets so he just used what he could cobble together. The effect reminds me of that line from The Secret History, where Richard says the Greek class’s strange quality appeared to be “intensely cultivated.” So is this whole movie. It’s not meant to be a realistic portrayal of rich kids in late 1980s New York and that’s exactly why you’ll get a TSH vibe from it...though without any murders. If you’ve read The Goldfinch, some scenes will probably also remind you very much of the Barbours and their opulent but ossified Park Avenue apartment.

«إننا نتقادم؛ لقد عاصرنا فترة من الزمن وقد انتهت. إنه يشبه الموت إلى حد ما.» هذه عبارة على لسان أحد الأبطال خلال مشهد نهاية آخر أيام الديسكو، الذي يمكن اعتباره بشكل ما مرثية لنهاية حقبة الديسكو، أو مرثية لما هو أكثر خصوصية وأعمق أثراً من ذلك؛ فترة الشباب.

الجميل في الفيلم، وهو فيلم جميل على المستوى الفني بأية حال، هي تلك اللمسة الشابة التي تطبع الشخصيات، والحوار، فتجعلها أكثر حميمية وحيوية وجاذبية وصدقاً ، وتجعله مرحاً ومدهشاً وممتعاً، تلك اللمسة الشابة التي يحصل الجميع عليها مرة في العمر، ولفترة من الزمن، قبل أن تذوي بمرور الوقت، وربما تأفل للأبد. هو فيلم تتصور أنك عشته فيما مضى، وتحب أن تصنع مثله يوماً ما، عندما تتقادم إلى الحد الذي تفقد عنده نفسك التي خبرتها جيداً وألفتها تماماً رغم كل شيء قبيح أو أخرق، ويضع الزمن قبضته الغاشمة على حياتك.
