Several years later, the Soviets send the spacecraft Leonov & crew to Jupiter along with three Americans, including Floyd, to help investigate Discovery and the malfunction of the vessel’s sentient computer, HAL 9000. Keir Dullea returns as the missing astronaut David Bowman while Helen Mirren plays the captain of the Leonov. Bob Balaban and John Lithgow also appear as the other two American astronauts. “2010: The Year We Make Contact” (1984) is realistic science-fiction that’s less artsy and more dramatically compelling compared to its predecessor, “2001: A Space Odyssey” (1968). That doesn’t make it better, of course, just different. “2001” raised questions while this one provides answers, which some people inevitably won’t like. The questions include: Why did HAL malfunction? What was the real reason for Discovery’s original mission, unknown to Floyd? What happened to Bowman? What is the purpose of the colossal monolith orbiting Jupiter? Both films compliment and counterbalance each other. This one’s more of a straightforward space adventure in the near future. Unlike Star Wars, which is space fantasy, “2010” is space-oriented adult science-fiction. Star Trek is too, but “2010” is far more realistic, which I appreciate. In other words, don’t expect any Klingons or spacecraft dogfights. This is more along the lines of “Mission to Mars” (2000) and “The Martian” (2015). The film runs 1 hours, 56 minutes. GRADE: B r96sk: A much more standard affair compared to its predecessor. Given that’s the case, I honestly enjoyed this more than ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ – if only because it’s more closer to what I’d personally want from a film than what that 1968 ...

Well, maybe I’m biased because I think Stephen McAteer is one of the better Casualty writers and Dylan and Rash are two of my favourite characters, but even knowing the outcome (well, for the Dylan/Ethan/Stevie stuff anyway) I thought that was a very good episode!
It was SO refreshing to see Dylan getting proper screentime tonight. His characterisation was absolutely spot-on (I think McAteer wrote The Long Haul, which is one of my favourite Dylan episodes, so that’s not surprising), William Beck was finally given the chance to do some proper acting, and we saw Dylan displaying some very visibly autistic body language indeed. All in all, a fantastic episode for Dylan content.
I know I compare these two every five seconds (in my defence, they’re pretty much each show’s respective versions of each other) but it seems the Clinical Lead job is starting to become to Dylan what the CEO job is to Henrik. Neither of them actually really want the job, they actually find it quite stressful and overwhelming, but circumstances keep conspiring to force them to take it anyway. The only difference is that Dylan, while he may not like the Clinical Lead job, is competent at it.
Anyway, Dylan choosing to take the permanent Clinical Lead job to keep Stevie away from it and protect Ethan was a very Dylan thing to do indeed. And I adored the scene with him and Ethan where Dylan found out about Ethan not taking his Huntington’s meds. It was gorgeously written, subdued rather than melodramatic. Dylan’s characterisation in that scene in particular was literally PERFECT. And William Beck and George Rainsford both gave excellent performances. (I loved the scene where Dylan brought Stevie into his office just to call her out, too.)
I’m also wondering if Dylan taking the Clinical Lead job - something we know he finds stressful and overwhelming - is going to be part of the build-up to that breakdown we all thought was coming, but then it looked like it wasn’t coming, but now it looks like it’s coming again.
As for Rash’s storyline - that’s a little bit more on the melodrama side, but I think Casualty are making it work. They’re not leaning too much into the sensationalism, I think they’ve gone for a more genuine portrayal of how easily young people get swept up in this kind of thing without meaning to. You can feel real sympathy for many of the kids involved. Rash’s involvement is where it gets perhaps a little bit silly, but even then I think they’re managing to pull it off, mostly because of Neet Mohan’s fantastic acting. I’m glad they’re finally giving him a proper storyline to sink his teeth into, he really has earned it.
There were really only two storylines tonight, so I don’t have much to say. But a couple other notes:
For one, I liked Dylan’s “whoever he or she or they are” line. It kind of annoys me when people do the “he or she or they” thing, like, just say “they”, that’s already gender neutral. But I give Dylan a pass on it, because he’s Dylan, and because it’s nice to see him trying to be gender inclusive (it felt like a realistic thing for someone Dylan’s age who doesn’t fully understand trans issues but wants to try to be an ally to say).
For another thing, I adore it when Casualty give us Henrik updates when he’s not even on this show, so I thank them for that lol.

Abandoning Prosecution Of Michael Flynn: Lawful or Unjust?
By Sneh Amin, University of Miami, Class of 2021
May 22, 2020
Tumblr media
The case against Michael Flynn, Trump’s former national security advisor, has been dropped. The Justice Department has abandoned his prosecution, claiming that he should never have been charged to begin with.[3]
Michael Flynn was once a distinguished Army lieutenant general, having served in Afghanistan and Iraq. He had earned numerous awards and was appointed the head of the Defense Intelligence Agency in 2012 by President Barack Obama. Four years later, in 2016, he gave a controversial speech at the Republican National Convention. During his speech, Flynn called for the arrest of Hillary Clinton, stating, “We do not need a reckless president who believes she is above the law… Yes, that’s right, lock her up!” He even went on to say, “If I did a tenth of what she did, I would be in jail today.” Shortly after Trump won the 2016 U.S. presidential election, he announced his decision to make Flynn his national security advisor. It is around this time that most of Flynn’s issues arose.[6]
During the presidential transition, Flynn participated in a series of conversations with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak. Prior to these phone calls, Obama had recently announced sanctions against Russia for interfering in the 2016 election.  This raised many questions about whether the Trump administration was attempting to meddle with the Obama administration’s foreign policy. The calls between Flynn and the ambassador had been intercepted by US surveillance, and although potentially illegal due to the classified information, they were leaked by US officials to the press. When Vice President Mike Pence addressed the nation regarding this issue, he claimed that Flynn had told him that the sanctions were never discussion on the calls. Because the Justice Department had transcripts of the calls due to the interception by US surveillance, there was evidence that during the conversations, Flynn had allegedly told the foreign policy ambassador to not overreact to the Obama administration’s sanctions. [1,6]
Due to this discrepancy, F.B.I. agents went to the White House to interview Flynn, who again maintained that the sanctions were never discussed on the call. Flynn resigned in February 2017, making him the shortest serving national security advisor. After leaving the White House, he continued to be investigated by the F.B.I. During this time, President Trump supposedly encouraged James Comey, the director of the F.B.I. at the time, to drop the investigation on Michael Flynn. Evidently, this raised the question about whether the President of the United States was attempting to obstruct justice.[6]
On December 1, 2017, Flynn pled guilty and admitted lying to the F.B.I. agents.[5] He later became a cooperating witness in the Mueller investigation. At the end of 2018, Flynn was waiting to be sentenced by a federal judge. During this time, it was revealed that Mueller was suggesting to the judge that due to Flynn’s cooperation, he should not be jailed. According to Mueller’s office, “The defendant provided firsthand information about the content and context of interactions between the transition team and Russian government officials.” [6] In 2019, Flynn fired his lawyers, and his legal team decided to take a more combative stance on the matter. The F.B.I. was accused of bias and misconduct.[1]
In May 2020, U.S. Attorney General William Barr asked a separate outside team of federal prosecutors to review the case files, an unusual course of action. These files (pictured below) reveal that there was some sort of internal debate on how to go about questioning Flynn for his interview.[4]Based on these documents, Trump claimed that Flynn was “exonerated” and that the charges should be dropped, despite the fact that Flynn had pleaded guilty. President Trump also said that he was considering pardoning Flynn and bringing him back into his administration.[1]
Barr’s attempt to drop the case is considered to be highly unusual, especially due to the fact that Flynn had already pled guilty. Legal experts have been unable to find a reasonable precedent for the Justice Department to be dropping such a case. Over 2,300 department veterans have signed an open letter accusing Barr of undermining the equity of the justice system. However, the Justice Department has declared that Flynn’s lies did not constitute a crime due to the fact that there was not a legitimate investigation occurring to justify the F.B.I.’s interview of Flynn. In order to support this claim, the department has referred to the fact that prior to the issue regarding Flynn’s conversations with the Russian ambassador, the F.B.I. had decided to close a counterintelligence inquiry into Flynn because of a lack of evidence of his collusion with the Russians.[7] Many law enforcement officials have expressed their disbelief, calling into question the Justice Department’s integrity. Former President Barack Obama stated that “not just institutional norms, but our basic understanding of rule of law is at risk.” [3]
Judge Emmet G. Sullivan, who is handling Flynn’s case, has appointed retired federal judge John Gleeson to argue against Barr’s decision to abandon prosecution. This week, Gleeson has contributed to an article detailing why dropping all charges would be an unfavorable decision. He has contended that the fourth should not “dismiss a well-founded prosecution for impermissible or corrupt reasons.” He has also been asked by Judge Sullivan to determine whether Flynn has committed perjury, and if he should be held in contempt of court.[7]
It is likely Flynn may have committed perjury. He has stated numerous times under oath that he knowingly lied to the F.B.I. during his interview. However, Flynn later changed his lawyers, and requested to withdraw his guilty plea. In January, he claimed that he did not make false statements to the F.B.I. agents and that he had not remembered the details of his conversations with the Russian ambassador. Flynn also claimed to have pleaded guilty only due to the advice of his former lawyers. He stated that he feared the consequences he would face by maintaining his claim of innocence.[7]
While the president has hinted at rehiring Flynn, many of his advisors do not seem to support his decision.[3] It is possible for President Trump to pardon Flynn at any time. However, at this point it is still unknown what the outcome of Flynn’s case will be.

Opinion: A Season To Remember – Bolton Wanderers 1994/95
Reaching Wembley is reason enough for a season to be a memorable one, so for Bolton to get to place under the Twin Towers twice in the same season made the 1994/95 season all the more memorable.
Manager Bruce Rioch had assembled an exciting team at Burnden Park, with the team in a rich vein of form and competing well in the cups.
Two seasons before, Bolton had won the Second Division title (what is now League One) and had also knocked holders Liverpool out of the FA Cup, after taking them to a replay.
Then in 1993/94, Rioch’s men went on an amazing Cup run, beating three Premiership teams before losing by a single goal to Oldham Athletic in the Sixth Round. Their league form took a hit as a result as they Bolton seemed to save it up for the Cup, ending the season in 14th place.
The season did not start at all well as they drew their first game 3-3 at Grimsby before losing their next two games against Bristol City and Middlesbrough. The Bristol City defeat would be their last at Burnden Park for the rest of the season.
Bolton’s first victory of the season came in their final game in August as they beat Millwall 1-0 at Burnden Park. Four days later, they hit four past Stoke City to climb up to 9th in the table.
The inconsistent form returned, however, as Bolton would only win one of their next four league games in September, a 3-0 win at Luton Town.
One positive that could be taken from September was Bolton’s comprehensive 3-0 win at Premiership Ipswich Town in the Coca Cola Cup. They would follow this up with a 1-0 win in the second leg at Burnden Park to give them a resounding 4-0 aggregate win.  Sheffield United would await them in the Third Round.
October started with a John McGinlay winner to take all three points off Derby at Burnden Park before three consecutive draws against Burnley, Oldham Athletic and Port Vale.
A win over Sheffield United in the Coca Cola Cup put Bolton through to the Fourth Round. This must have given them a kick-start as they then put a run of four wins together, scoring ten goals on that run and conceding only once. They had quietly climbed up to third in the table.
Two away defeats in four days, first to Wolves and then Barnsley at the end of November put a swift halt to the unbeaten run.
On the 30th November, Bolton tore West Ham United apart at Upton Park in the Fourth Round of the Coca Cola Cup. Two John McGinlay goals and a third from David Lee put Bolton into the Quarter Finals.
Bolton followed these defeats up with a very good December, winning three games, drawing two and only losing once, to an Andy Hunt winner for West Brom at The Hawthorns. They ended 1994 in sixth place, taking up the fourth and final play-off place in the table.
1995 started with a 1-0 win over Reading in the League, Simon Coleman bagging the only goal of the game. Five days later, Bolton faced a trip to the South Coast where they were resoundingly beaten 3-1 by Portsmouth.
Four days after this defeat, Bolton faced yet another Premiership team in Norwich City, in the Quarter Finals of the Coca Cola Cup.
David Lee scored the only goal of the game for Bolton in front of 17,029 fans at Burnden Park to set up a Semi-Final with Swindon Town, also of the First Division. Liverpool and Crystal Palace were the other two semi-finalists.
A 0-0 draw at Vicarage Road took Bolton up to third in the league. Two consecutive 5-1 home wins Charlton Athletic and then Wolves took Bolton to the top of the table for the first time in the season.
A 1-1 draw at Notts County was followed up by the First Leg of the Semi-Final of the Coca Cola Cup Semi-Final against Swindon Town.
Wanderers went a goal up from Alan Stubbs to give Bolton’s fans the opportunity to start dreaming of a Wembley Cup Final. Two goals from Swindon’s Peter Thorne gave the visitors the advantage for the second leg.
Before the Second Leg was played, Bolton had three games to play in the league. They beat Barnsley and Southend United at home but lost 2-1 at the Baseball Ground to Derby County, despite Jason McAteer giving Bolton a half-time lead.
In the Second Leg, things went from bad to even worse for Bolton as Jan Aage Fjortoft scored on 57 minutes to give Swindon a 3-1 lead and surely a place at Wembley. Instead, Bolton scored three goals in 24 minutes to go through 4-3 on aggregate. The goals came from Jason McAteer (who had played for the Republic of Ireland in the World Cup the previous summer), Mixu Paatelainen and finally John McGinlay after 88 minutes.
Two wins and two draws followed in the League but all thoughts were on Wembley and the Coca Cola Cup Final on 2nd April. Their opponents would be Liverpool, who beat Crystal Palace 1-0 in both home and away legs of the other Semi-Final.
The 1995 Coca Cola Cup Final was all about one man, and sadly for Bolton it wasn’t one of their players.
It was Steve McManaman’s day as he tore the Bolton defence apart from the right-wing, toying with opponents and scoring both of Liverpool’s goals in a 2-1 win. He was the deserved winner of the Alan Hardaker Trophy, given to the Man of the Match in the League Cup Final.
Alan Thompson scored less than a minute after McManaman grabbed his second of the day, to give Bolton some hope. It wasn’t to be as the Premiership big boys held out to win their first silverware for five years. It must have been sweet payback for the FA Cup defeat in 1993 for the Liverpool fans.
youtube
A 1-0 win away to Swindon was then followed up three days later by a win of the same scoreline at home to West Brom.
Luton then held Bolton to a goalless draw at Burnden Park before a 1-0 defeat at Tranmere Rovers started to get the nerves jangling.
Sunderland were the visitors to Burnden Park with five league games left to play and it was fans-favourite “Super” John McGinlay who fired in the only goal of the game in front of just over fifteen thousand fans.
Bolton traveled down to Reading sitting in second place in the table. Reading were doing very well in the league and were having a great season. They started the game in fifth place.
It was Reading who left Elm Park with all three points in a 2-1 victory. Bolton’s nerves got the better of them and the defeat at Elm Park was followed by another defeat, this time to Oldham Athletic.
A John McGinlay goal at Stoke was enough to get a point for Bolton in their trip to the Potteries. A 1-1 draw at home to neighbouring rivals Burnley in the last game of the season meant that Bolton ended the season in third position. If they wanted to gain promotion to the Premiership, they’d have to go about it the hard way, through the Play-Offs.
Due to the reduction of teams in the Premiership from the start of the following season, only one team went up automatically from the First Division in 1994/95. That lucky team was Middlesbrough, who won the championship, but only three points ahead of Reading in second place.
Reading would face Tranmere Rovers in the Play-Offs and Bolton would play Wolves in the other Semi-Final.
In the First Leg of the Semi-Final, Steve Bull put Wolves ahead with a header at the near post. Bolton had Peter Shilton in goal at the ripe old age of 44 and he couldn’t stop Bull’s powerful header go past him into the back of the net.
Within a minute of the restart, World Cup star Jason McAteer hit a great equaliser from at least 25 yards out, his eighth goal of the season.
Mark Venus then headed in from close range to give Wolves the lead again within four minutes of McAteer’s long-range effort to give them a 2-1 lead going into the second leg at Burnden Park three days later.
Just over 20,000 fans crammed into the old Burnden Park ground for the second leg and John McGinlay scored twice to take Bolton back to Wembley for the second month in a row.
Reading would be the opponents at Wembley after they had won 3-1 on aggregate over Tranmere Rovers.
Reading raced into a two-goal lead after 12 minutes, Lee Nogan and Adrian Williams netting for The Royals. The Royals were awarded a penalty on 34 minutes and Stuart Lovell’s effort was pushed away by Keith Branagan in the Bolton goal.
Bolton fought their way back into the game when with a quarter of an hour to go, Owen Coyle netted for the Lancashire club.
Dutchman Fabian deFreitas scored with four minutes to go to level the match and take it to extra time. Mixu Paatelainen scored just before half-time in extra time to give Bolton the lead for the first time in the match.
DeFreitas scored Bolton’s fourth to seal their place in the Premiership the following season. Reading’s player-manager Jimmy Quinn made it 4-3 with a minute to go but Bolton held on for a famous win.
youtube
The summer 1995 was one of great change at Burnden Park. Manager Bruce Rioch spent over £12 million bringing in Dennis Bergkamp and David Platt in from Italy. The downside for the Bolton fans was that Rioch had left Bolton for Arsenal early in June and that they were his first signings at the North London club!
Jason McAteer also left Bolton and joined Liverpool, the team that beat Bolton in the Coca Cola Cup Final.
Bolton would struggle in the 1995/96 season and finished bottom of the Premier League. They only won eight of their 38 league games, nine points off safety. Bruce Rioch would guide Arsenal to fourth place in the Premiership but would leave after only one season at Highbury.

The boy I loved had perfect skin
Was a big fan of George Benson
Clean-cut, jovial and full of hope
No need for such superficialities to cope
(I'm so sorry)
No need for it to cope
(I'm so sorry)
Looking at me like a father figure
Can't even face what I manage to disfigure
Wish that I could believe in a hell
Just to coax some divine retribution for myself

I can't breathe without you
What if I needed help?
What if I took too much?
You're not here to hear my yell
You know you are always my crutch
