John Sloan, The City from Greenwich Village, 1922. Oil on canvas.
Sloan described the personally meaningful site: “Looking south over lower Sixth Avenue from the roof of my Washington Place studio, on a winter evening. The distant lights of the great office buildings downtown are seen in the gathering darkness. The triangular loft building on the right had contained my studio for three years before.”
Painted in 1922, this nocturnal vista of Lower Manhattan, seen from the roof of his Greenwich Village studio, is regarded as the culmination of Sloan’s city scenes. In his own description of the picture, Sloan stated that it “makes a record of the beauty of the older city which is giving way to the chopped-out towers of the modern New York.” Sloan has commented on the artifice of the modern city by including the Moonshine advertisement on a building at the lower left. This fictional brand is a reference to the illicitly distilled and distributed liquor that was popular during Prohibition. The truncated moon graphic evokes what the city’s artificial electric lighting so effectively obscures: natural moonlight. Despite Sloan’s critical attitude toward urban modernization, the painting possesses a magical quality, as one looks over the elevated train tracks on Greenwich Village’s lower Sixth Avenue toward the eerily illuminated skyscrapers—the Woolworth Building and Singer Tower—on the horizon.

Drooling over this $59M penthouse in New York City’s Woolworth building.
Tumblr media
Look at all the floors leading up to the rooftop tower.
Tumblr media
Beautiful art deco entrance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Isn’t the lobby going to the elevator beautiful?
Tumblr media
Incredible. I wonder if this was just a tower that was made into a home.
Tumblr media
Each level is different. This one has wood accents.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But, these are pure white and ultra modern. Look at those spirals.
Tumblr media
The closet has doors with locks.
Tumblr media
Amazing library.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This floor has games, music, and family room things.
Tumblr media
No need for a communal gym, b/c the penthouse has its own.
Tumblr media
Check out the pool. The pool is for all the residents. Pretty classy, though.
Tumblr media
The view includes the Empire State Building.
Tumblr media
The Geo. Washington Bridge that takes you to my house.
Tumblr media
And, the Hudson River.

Woolworth’s, Grafton Street in the 1940s. It was the British chain’s first Irish store, opening in 1914 and housed in these beautiful Edwardian buildings. Suffered at hands of IRA in 1919 for selling British goods. Closed in 1984, the original buildings long torn down.

The way Negatus momentarily hesitates after Debbie kisses him on the cheek in the last episode of series 1.
The way he gets offended when Ellis of Woolworth hasn't heard of Debbie and even more offended when Ellis gets tasked with being the one to kill Debbie, then insists he wants to kill her, then gives Ellis detailed descriptions of how brilliant and clever and beautiful she is.
The way he puts an arm out protectively in front of her without even thinking about it when they're escaping prison together.
Yeah.

490. The 1980 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, November 27, 1980
Tumblr media
(the whole parade is here, if you just want the commercials and highlights, it's here)
Tumblr media
Randy Hamilton from the soap opera Texas sings "Deep in the Heart of Texas" with a small child? Who is this small child. I want it to be a random child that they chose three minutes before turning the cameras on. Randy doesn't have a Wikipedia page! Sadness.
Tumblr media
Ahhh!! Is that a baby Mark Linn Baker in the GE commercial?!
Tumblr media
I love the crowd whooping it up for the cast of One 'Mo Time. I was wondering what was behind them --- I think it was the broadcast booth for host Ed McMahon! Just ... there with the saddest looking Woolworth decorations ever.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What a weird closing card (what do you call that?) for this Child World / Children's Palace commercial that aired constantly. Ok, the bear didn't fall on his butt? That was the best shot we could get?
Tumblr media
For some reason Marilyn Michaels takes off her gloves while singing "Watching the Parade go Byyy". That couldn't of waited, Marilyn?
Tumblr media
Todd Bridges sang a song about the Summer. I felt bad for Todd, he had no back up dancers, just dancing in the street. Was this a time filler? Loved the song!
Tumblr media
A baby Glenn Close was there with the cast of Barnum. I feel like Ed is auditioning for the Star Search hosting gig with this parade. I love his energy.
Tumblr media
I love the juxtaposition of Bryant Gumbel thanking the Museum of Natural history for letting people warm up in their building with Doodlebug.
Tumblr media
Ed sang a song! When was the last time a host SANG.
Tumblr media
I thought Cootie ran over a clown, but the clown deliberately laid down in front of him??
Tumblr media
Just for us Hampton Roads girlies, Busch Gardens of Williamsburg had a Loch Ness Monster float! It's still at Busch Gardens! The cast of Brigadoon was on the float.
Tumblr media
Ed was trying to find a date for Happy Dragon. He said "I guess now that he's 21, he's free to go out in the evening and date whomever he chooses. So if you have an eligible dragon hanging around your house moping, we might be able to set them up and in the years to come, who knows how many dragons we might have in the parade!"
Tumblr media
There was a float for everyone's favorite box office flop, Popeye! I think that's supposed to be Olive Oyl?!
Tumblr media
1980 was electric football's year. It felt like it was the only toy advertised!
Tumblr media
"Tonka's Bear in a Box! Everyone's favorite!"
Tumblr media
Finally, a game that looks like one of my dad's vintage fire scanners.
Tumblr media
Cowboys were HOT this year, due to the movie Urban Cowboy, and the TV show Dallas. Modern equivalent to this would be this past Summer's Western Barbie! We even had Dean Butler from Little House on the Prairie sing "Don't Fence Me In" while riding a tortoise. The Lone Ranger even showed up. Oh, and even the McDonalds commercial with Ronald was western themed.
Tumblr media
While Snoopy couldn't fly this year due to a leg injury, we had Underdog.
Tumblr media
Can we discuss how a station wagon is pulling a float. Later on, I saw an Oldsmobile sedan towing the float with the Spinners on it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This beautiful phone store.
Tumblr media
I feel like by the time we were growing up in the late 80s/early 90s, Kermit had more bad days at the parade than good, but 1980 was a good year for him. Just look at him.
Tumblr media
Casper is over here looking like the baby from Ally McBeal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bob from Sesame Street sang a song while Bert & Ernie danced. Even Oscar liked the song.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, the entire parade isn't on YouTube. Looks like the recorder only set their VCR for two hours. One of the final things you see is Linda Ronstadt and the cast of The Pirates of Penzance. "I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major General" slaps.
Tumblr media
Related: previous thanksgiving entries.

On September 26th 1994 Jessie Kesson, the author of Another Time Another Place, died.
With a real gritty life, she was born as Jessie Grant McDonald in a workhouse in Inverness, Jessie spent her early childhood in an Elgin slum. Aged 10, she was taken from her mother and put into an orphanage for the next six years. After school, a period of varied jobs and accommodation led to a nervous breakdown and a year in Aberdeen Royal Mental Hospital.
At 19, Jessie was ‘boarded out’ (or fostered) from the hospital to an old woman near Loch Ness. She rejoiced in her freedom and the beauty of her new surroundings. During this time, she met Johnnie Kesson, her future husband. They had two children and moved to London in the 1950s.
Kesson held a wide variety of jobs, including Woolworth’s shop assistant, life model, BBC Radio producer, drama teacher, and working night shifts in a children’s care home. She worked full-time until she was 60 years old, and continued her writing career throughout this time. By the 1950s, Kesson was regularly published in Scottish periodicals and had written several radio plays. In an interview Jessie once said ’ I’ve never felt I would write the great big novel. I’ve aye wanted to write the sma’ perfect!’ Kesson gathered a number of notable friends throughout her life, including publishers, agents and fellow writers. Her friends included great Nan Shepherd, Flora Garry, Lisa St Aubin de Terán, Cecil Day Lewis and Neil Gunn. She also maintained many lifelong friendships from her early days in north-east Scotland. She died in 1994, and her ashes were scattered with her husband’s on the banks of Loch Ness near where they first met.
As well as her books Jessie’s work was most notably made into a film, Another Time, Another Place, in 1983, starring Phylis Logan, Tom Watson and Gregor Fisher, and The White Bird Passes, was adapted for TV in 1980, she also wrote over 100 plays for radio
A plaque commemorating Jessie Kesson is at Hill Terrace Eligin.

✨💗 Late November! 💗✨
Hey everyone! I hope that you all had a wonderful October especially to those who celebrate Halloween! Hopefully everyone's November has been good too. This post is massively scatterbrained as I have kept going in and out of this post in my drafts also, photos at the bottom of this post! :)
♥ I am in my food prep era! I've always struggled with eating the same foods (unless I really love them) multiple nights a week but, my partner and I are now committed to spending a day a week to cook up an assortment of meals to freeze so we can go from A to Z whenever we feel like eating something different which is a nice thought.
♥ Last month was difficult, my pop passed away and his funeral was the first I've ever attended, it was very difficult but beautiful and moving.
♥ Christmas is on the horizon and I have spent a wee bit of money trying to get to everyone presents wise! I've also committed myself to attending the family Christmas which I haven't done for a few years now.
♥ I went out for the first time since my stay in the APU and it was difficult. I froze up in public as the place was very crowded and my partner kind of had to pull me along. I was okay after a while but it felt like a panic attack was imminent.
♥ I have my last two tattoo appointments for the year coming up! More spots on my legs and above my knees on both thighs.
(My partner got COVID after a shift and I then got it from him so I unfortunately missed those two appointments but, they've been rescheduled for January!)
♥ My partner has suggested we do a membership with the local leisureplex as that way we can both use the gym and the pools. My partner really enjoys swimming and it's a good way to get some work done on our health.
♥ I have been practicing on false nails as I applied for two courses for study (nail tech and pathology) so I included those below! I would like to do nail tech as it can allow me to work from home as well and I like 'junk nails' (with all the charms) but I think I'd specialise in natural nails. I have been wanting to go back to work despite being burnt out so I have been trying to find jobs that are more one on one in environments that aren't as busy so if I finish the course I'll be in work before I get married in October. I hear back next week so I'll post an update on whether I've been accepted or not into my choice courses!!
♥ I have to now buy my wedding dress (bridal shopping on Monday) as my partners Oma has declined a little and is no longer able to do so. So, I've had to rearrange my budget but also I am also a bit worried over losing some weight and then needing to get it altered. Never the less, I called the bridal store to confirm everything and they got me to upload photos of what I was looking for so that they can narrow it down for the appointment. I am hoping it goes well!
♥ It is essentially summer in Australia now so, the days are hot and I am struggling to do a great deal honestly just to get motivated and get things done but I am trying! I have a doctors appointment to sort out trialing a new antidepressant and to get a blood test done. I have so much to sort out but the year is coming to a close so I am trying to wrap it all up neatly.
♥ An update photo! I look horrendous and I fried some of the lower half of my hair (hence the change in tone) as I wanted to go partially green so now I have to get it fixed up aha. Beyond that I have included some of my favourite products! Vetta is a brand of pasta that can be found at Woolworths (if you're in Australia) that do high fibre, high protein and also low-gi pasta! Muscle Nation is also an Australian supplement and gym wear brand (I already had their protein custard and some other products but, with the black Friday sales I have purchased some new products which I will review on here when they arrive!) that I quite like. I may like variation in food but I do tend to like the same flavours so for me the choc mint reminds me of the choc mint Sipahh straws from way back when. They offer a lot of flavours including banana which my partner loves (he said it tastes similar to banana Nesquik which was discontinued here years and years ago) so if you wanted to give them a look they offer a fair few things. Protein pancake mix, protein jelly sachets, protein waters, casein protein custards, protein powders, pre-workouts, daily greens, energy drinks, aminos and protein bars! They also offer vegan friendly plant protein and they even have recipes online (mostly for their casein protein custard).

In the introduction to the thick Everyman’s edition of Orwell’s Collected Essays, John Carey declares, ‘He almost never praises beauty and when he does he locates it in rather scruffy and overlooked things . . . the eye of the common toad, a sixpenny rosebush from Woolworth’s.’ I’d argue that he praises beauty often, and those overlooked things become means of broadening the definition of beauty, finding versions that are not elite or established, finding loveliness in the quotidian, the plebeian, the neglected. That quest makes beauty itself insubordinate to convention. Even Nineteen Eighty-Four’s grimness is peppered with moments of reprieve in the things his lonely rebel admires, craves, enjoys, most notably an ordinary landscape and a glass paperweight encasing a bit of red coral.

One day, one rhyme- Day 3132
A spider spins a fine cobweb,
She hopes to catch a prize.
Perhaps it will be velvet moths,
Perhaps some buzzing flies.
Such glittering gossamer nets
Are beautiful to see,
Though I prefer to catch my food
In a Woolworths trolley.

my first make of the year! a shirtdress i bought the fabric for in september 2021, cut out in february of 2022, and sewn up in january 2023. start as you mean to continue as they say.
this fabric is a beautiful hand block printed rayon with little gold accents, and so soft and flowy. i know rayon is controversial both to sew with and to wear but it's what i taught myself how to sew on so it always feels like coming home. adelaide is a hot dry climate in summer so this fabric is perfect for here, especially with the desert winds that rip through town. i wore this on its maiden voyage to the shops this afternoon to get raspberries and had the bottom five buttons undone for max leg slit action and was the coolest cucumber in all of woolworths.

5 alkemia samples
silken tent
first impressions: its a bit disappointing.... smells nice and sweet abit powdery but its extremely similar to a $10 vanilla body spray i got from woolworths.... not worth it so far but ill let it sit for a while.
+after sitting for a while its gorgeous. sweet syrupy golden but not too edible smelling. the angelica adds a soft fuzzy herbal tone that balances the fragrance and cuts through the syrupy texture and keeps it from getting cloying. i cant stop inhaling it. i can smell the candied angelica, rice pudding and caramel the best and the jasmine, tuberose and chrysanthemum are more of a subtle white floral in the background.
★★★★★
aurora
first impressions: stexture eally nice reminds me of those musky perfumes you get from mecca that are by byredo or sum shit... i like it fresh neutral a bit of cardamom and iris.
+the iris is really pretty very buttery and milky not too powdery. i can smell the cardamom, violet, musk clearly and the cashmeran adds a cedar element but i cant detect any ginger. ethereal is a good word to describe it. i was wearing it while watching spirited away the other day and i felt like they were a good match especially soundtracks like a road to somewhere and the beginning of nighttime coming.
★★★★
bohemiens en voyage
first impressions: i put it on tadhg it smells like a hippie perfume but more pleasant and wearable in my opinion. a bit smoky a bit like hay a bit sweet. i tried to smell it again but he had made a smoked salmon croissant and all i could smell was da salmon.
+theres no anise in the notes but the beginning smells like it has a licorice note. i can smell the hay, tobacco and amber in the beginning plus a lowkey background sweetness from the sugarcane which smells crystalised. after about 10 minutes the licorice type note is gone (maybe the tabac leaf?) and i can smell hay, sugarcane and the most gorgeous skin musk. buttery salty creamy is how id describe it which might not sound so appealing but it really is beautiful. this is also a golden coloured fragrance like silken tent but instead of being an amber colour its more of a soft dusty yellow. this scent makes me think of malibu by hole. i think that tobacco hay sugarcane and iris are very kinderwhore themed notes in my mind. my mother said that the opening smells like talcum powder.
★★★★★
the wild atlantic way
first impressions: SOO GOOD..... smells fresh and oceanic and floral and the flowers are like honey-sweet wildflowers this is GOOD ASF..... i like it fr. abit soapy but im still lovin it
+the opening flowers are so sweet and full that they almost smell fruity. they smell bright yellow and juicy and you can really smell the nectar and pollen in them. after ten minutes the flowers arent as juicy but they are still very bright and sweet and you start smelling the salt of the ambergris. slowly the flowers die down and it becomes a slightly floral ambergris perfume. im learning that im a huge fan of yellow florals. i saw someone on reddit say that this fragrance reminds them of a romantic scene in a movie (braveheart is the example they used) and i can see that. to me it calls to mind a scene of green fields bright yellow flowers cliffsides and rough waves. the clouds are thick and covering the whole sky except for one break where the sunlight streams down in rays golden and the bright sunlit landscape is contrasted by the dark grey clouds in the distance and it looks otherworldly. one of my favourite kinds of weathers but yeah i like this scent though i am generally a floral lover.
★★★★★
wings of flame
first impressions: this shit smells delicious like coffee yummy.
+smells edible but not overly sweet. the coffee is almost dessert like and the honey is chewy and amber coloured. it makes sense that the coffee note is described as "golden coffee" because it almost smells a bit like caramel with how rich and deep and sweet it is. i put it on tadhg to see his reaction and he says he loves honey+coffee combinations because its decadent in an ancient way. i can see what he means especially for this fragrance in particular. theres no patchouli in the notes but that was a note my mum picked up on.

I was just thinking about one of my childhood friends and his lovely family. He lived down the block from me but our friendly neighbours were more than happy to let us cut through their respective gardens so as to not walk by the main road. I’m still friends with him on Facebook and was curious to see how his family were doing.
His mother passed away this January. Our sublime and kind-hearted Christina. I remember how welcoming you were, how you were so excited for your sons to have friend that was ‘a girl who liked boy things’. I remember your warm embrace and hospitality. I remember the time you came sprinting like Usain Bolt when you heard me crack my elbow against a metal fence. I remember you comforting me after a nightmare during a sleepover and driving me home. I remember you taking us to Video Ezy so we could hire Tremors, then down to Coles for sweets and lollies. I remember your beautiful laugh as I beat the boys at Yu-Gi-Oh. I remember when I started to dress differently and you thought my goth clothes were so cool, and you’d stare down anyone who tried to insult me while we were out shopping, and brag loudly about my exam results so they could hear. I remember how happy you were when you found out I liked Rammstein because you worked for Universal and could get me lots of free CDs from European bands. I remember our chats about my education and my future as I began high school. I remember helping your boys with their homework when they transitioned to high school. I remember talking to your partner Mikey for ages, chatting Jackass and post-punk music. He found it charming that I didn’t like typical children’s entertainment. He got me to download a bunch of Bauhaus for him after we had a long talk about ‘Bela Lugosi’s Dead’. I remember you telling me that I was like the daughter you never had. In fact, you told me while we were walking through the Big W level parking at the mall, that’s how well I remember that moment. I made a joke about a chain-gang because so many areas were cordoned off during the ongoing renovations. You gave such a hearty belly laugh and gave me a big cuddle. It was late 2004. I remember how you understood that your eldest son would probably try smoking cigarettes at some point in his early teens, and you trusted me to make sure it was only ever tobacco if I was with him. You didn’t judge Tristan’s family for their substance abuse problems and allowed us to visit our friend, with the knowledge that I was looking out for the younger ones, aware of needles and sharps safety, and that if anyone made a poor decision - including the adults - I would keep them safe. I remember the last time I saw you, stopping you in the Woolworths carpark in Manly Vale. I was about 19 or 20, but you hadn’t seen me since I was 16. Still, you remembered me. As soon as your heard my silly accent, you knew exactly who I was. You dropped your shopping to run over and give me a big hug and tell me how nice it was to see me doing well after I moved away. Every time I drove down that road, I would check for your green station wagon - it was always there. I always planned on pulling over just to say hello, knowing you would greet me with a cuppa and a durry. Just like you remembered me that day in Woolies, I will never forget you Christina. No matter the time and distance, you were a light in each and every one of our lives and you always will be.  Christina Frost  4/6/1966 - 16/01/2023 Your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure You are loved beyond words And missed beyond measure.

Prince rudely rejected - by royalist by Laurel Stowell (March 13th 2014)
A "real royalist" was inadvertently quite rude to a member of the royal family staying in Wanganui.
Springvale resident Sandra Munro had some close encounters with Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex, when he was at Wanganui Collegiate School in late 1982 and early 1983. Later she discovered "the Mormon" she had been rude to was actually the prince.
That filled her with dismay, because Mrs Munro is a fan of all things royal.
She said she would likely follow Prince William and his wife Catherine if they come to Wanganui during their nine-day visit to New Zealand in April. That's unlikely, because Wellington, Auckland and Cambridge/Hamilton are looking like their only North Island destinations.
"The rest of the family has been here. The Queen has been here. Charles and Diana have been here."
Mrs Munro has a sizeable collection of royal memorabilia - cups, plates, books, garments, flags - even a teaspoon in memory of Prince William's birth.
She was brought up in Blackburn, Lancashire. The royal family visited Blackburn every few years when she was growing up, and it was always an occasion for celebration.
She remembers waiting in the street for a glimpse of the royals as a child - and the parties afterward.
"It was fantastic for us kids back in the early 1950s. There was very little money so everybody mucked in and there was big street parties."
Mrs Munro and her family have spent various periods of time in Wanganui. They were living in Springvale Rd in late 1982, when Prince Edward spent two terms at Wanganui Collegiate School as a house tutor and junior master.
Her first encounter with the prince was one day when she was walking to the nearest supermarket on Victoria Ave in a hurry. The supermarket was a Woolworths in those days.
Dawdling on the path in front of her were three men in black suits.
"Bloody Mormons," she thought, and barged and elbowed her way through them.
She heard one of them say to another: "You wanted to be treated as normal. She treated you as normal."
Soon after she was looking at sausages at Woolworths when the prince came up behind her.
"They looked like nice sausages," he said. "They had better be, because I always get them," she told him crossly.
She thought the Mormons had been following her, and asked the young man why. Did he have a problem, or did she have a smell about her?
After that he used to run past her house with the Collegiate boys. On one day when she was out in the garden he stopped running to talk to her, and said it was a beautiful day.
She replied very shortly, thinking she was being hounded. The prince's bodyguard said to him: "She's really giving you the works".
She thought no more about it, but noticed the same young man would sometimes honk his horn when driving past. Obviously he enjoyed being treated as normal, she concluded.
She didn't realise who he was until another day when she was angry, late for work and cut across the Collegiate grounds on her way to Wanganui Hospital.
She noticed a big crowd standing at a corner. She thought no more about it until the prince drove past, very slowly, and wound his window down.
"Well love, you've had your fun. I'm going home now," he said to her.
Suddenly it dawned on her who the "Mormon" was.
"I thought "Good God, I've been rude to royalty. What if his mother finds out?"
