NATSUKO

What do you mean, 'like'?

It's a feeling humans get when they have affection for something. I don't know if you're familiar with it.

NATSUKO scoffs.

NATSUKO

Don't be insolent. It's a stupid question.

REI

Why?

NATSUKO

I don't need to like you or not like you. You're my daughter-in-law.

REI turns towards the backseat.

REI

I'm a person!

She looks at her mother-in-law in disbelief then faces forward.

REI

I've known you for over 20 years.

NATSUKO

You're too similar to me.

REI

What does that mean?

NATSUKO

I am who I am, I don't apologise for it. But I know I'm not easy. I've caused pain.

How do you even reply to that? Rei stays silent.

NATSUKO

I remember the first time I saw you. I knew straight away.

REI

That I'd cause pain too.

NATSUKO

Yes, you had that look. Like the world has been letting you down since before you were even here.

REI turns towards NATSUKO.

REI

You didn't think I was good enough for your son.

They share a look.

REI

It's true, admit it.

NATSUKO

Oh, for heaven's sake. Of course you were good enough for him.

A bit of a twinkle in her eyes as she studies the horizon. Is she talking about her late husband too?

NATSUKO

You just weren't right for him. And he wasn't right for you. You couldn't see it. But the rest of us still had to watch it fall apart.

For your Decades of Horror 1970s Grue-Crew, the operative word for Space Amoeba is “fun!” Chad, Bill, and Doc are big Kaiju fans, while in comparison, Jeff is relatively inexperienced. Even so, their comments are pretty universal regarding Yog: Monster from Space. Chad says the sillier the better and if you want silly, you got it with Space Amoeba. According to Bill, it’s not great, but how can you not have fun with big rubber monsters slapping each other. Doc wonders aloud if it is good and then answers his own question: technically no, but it sure is a lot of fun. Jeff agrees with the rest of the crew on how fun Space Amoeba is and he manages to learn something as well as Bill schools him on the difference between amphibians and reptiles.

As long as you’re not looking for a Godzilla (1954) type kaiju film and are out for some good clean fun, your 70s Grue-Crew recommends Space Amoeba. At the time of this writing, the film is available for streaming on Amazon Prime.

Rezension „Die Maske“ von Fuminori Nakamura

Der japanische Schriftsteller Fuminori Nakamura erzählt uns eine Geschichte, die ihresgleichen sucht. Es ist die Geschichte eines alten desillusionierten und überdrüssigen Mannes, der als Vermächtnis Schrecken und Terror in der Welt zurücklassen möchte, um seine Macht zu demonstrieren. Es ist die Geschichte eines Kindes, das mit elf Jahren seiner Kindheit beraubt wird und das  letztendlich in einem Drama die Hauptrolle spielt. Der Vater inszeniert dieses Drama, indem er ein junges Mädchen adoptiert und der Natur ihren Lauf lässt. Fumihiro liebt Kaori, die von seinem Vater missbraucht wird. Schnell erkennt Fumihiro, dass die Hölle, die ihm sein Vater zeigen will, mit Kaori zu tun hat. Er will seine erste Liebe schützen und entwirft Pläne, seinen Vater zu töten. Fumihiro lebt mit dem Wissen, für das Böse bestimmt zu sein. Kann er aus dieser Rolle ausbrechen? Und zu welchem Preis? Als ein schreckliches Highlight des Romans, empfand ich die Szene im Keller, als sich Fumihiro seinem Vater entgegenstellt und er erkennt, dass auch dieser Schritt zum Plan seines Vaters gehört. Er kommt nicht aus diesem Fahrplan raus. „Verfluche das Glück! Menschen, die einen Menschen getötet haben, können unmöglich wieder vollkommen werden. Aber ganz böse, das geht. Das ist dein Lebensweg! ... Das Höllenfeuer ist eine lodernde teuflische Kraft, die alles Glück in der Welt zerstört. Sich ihr hinzugeben bedeutet ein unvergleichliches und berauschendes Vergnügen - wenigstens für einen kurzen Moment.“ Der Vater wird von seinen nihilistischen und zerstörerrischen Gedanken zerfressen und geht unter mit der Hoffnung, die Familientradition mit Fumihiro weiter getragen zu haben. Fumihiro, der seinem Vater äußerlich immer ähnlicher wird, hat Angst, es auch innerlich zu werden. Er lässt sich operieren, hat nun das Gesicht eines Toten und nimmt dessen Identität an. Fumihiro, die Spielfigur seines Vaters, ist zerstört. Er hat sich seinem Schicksal entzogen. Sicherlich ist es auch als Gesellschaftskritik zu lesen. Firmen, die durch Krieg und Waffen ein hohes Einkommen erzielen, Diese Thematik, das "in der Rolle bleiben", finden wir auch bei Haruki Murakami, sei es in 1Q84 oder Naokos Lächeln. Ich glaube, besonders in Asien hat das eine große Bedeutung, 5/5 Punkten Sprachliche Gestaltung Schon im Prolog erfahren wir, zu welchem Zweck Fumihiro gezeugt wurde. Das war für mich, wie ein Granateneinschlag. Kann ein Mensch den Willen haben, das Böse in die Welt zu setzen und sein eigenes Kind damit zu instrumentalisieren? Ich musste wissen, wie die Geschichte weitergeht. Ich war gefesselt. Dem Autor gelingt es, eine Atmosphäre zu schaffen, die dem Leser den Atem raubt. Es ist nicht alleine diese Unausweichlichkeit, sondern auch die Hilflosigkeit von Fumihiro und Kaori, die ich selbst beim Lesen empfand. Trotzdem hofft der Leser, dass es noch ein einigermaßen gutes Ende nimmt. Am meisten hat mich dabei beeindruckt, wie der Autor dem Leser diese unglaubliche Macht des Vaters vorführt. Das ist „Show it,  don’t Tell it“ vom Allerfeinsten. Der Roman spielt in einem Milieu des Kriminellen: Zuhälter, Mafia, korrupte Polizisten und Kriegstreiber. Der Krieg als Wirtschaftsmotor. Das Buch ist aus der Sicht Fumihiros und in der Ichform geschrieben. STOP! Eigentlich erzählt Schintani, die Identität seines neuen Gesichts. Er erzählt aus der Gegenwart (aus der Figur Schintani) von der Vergangenheit Fumihiros.  Mit seinem neuen Gesicht hat er Fumihiro abgelegt (Nihilismus?) Trotz der Ichform kommt das Geschehen nüchtern beim Leser an - geradezu emotionslos distanziert. Zumindest erging es mir so. Der Roman wird dem japanische Genre Noir zugeordnet. 5/5 Punkten Cover und äußere Erscheinung „Die Maske“ von Fuminori Nakamura, aus dem Japanischen von Thomas Eggenberg, hat 352 Seiten, einen Festen Einband und ist am 28.02.2018 unter der ISBN 9783257070217 bei Diogenes im Genre: Romane erschienen. Das Covermotiv ist ein Foto von Dan Winters. Ja! Ein schönes Motiv! Aber warum ein Weißkopfseeadler? Ich recherchierte über Dan Winters und über den Weißkopfseeadler. Dieser Adler hat eine lange Lebensdauer. Er hat außer dem Menschen keine natürlichen Feinde. Und er ist das Symbol der USA. Einem freiheitsliebenden Land. In Europa ist der Adler das Symboltier für Herrschaft, in Japan ist es der Drache. Ich glaube, der Weißkopfadler steht hier für Fumihiro, der aus seinem Schicksal „aussteigt“, die Identität eines Anderen annimmt und dessen Leben kopiert. Er allein hat es in der Hand, in welche Richtung die Zukunft geht. Wobei es bestimmt unterschiedliche Deutungsmöglichkeiten gibt. 5/5 Punkten Was sagt Fuminori Nakamura selbst zu seinem Buch „Die Maske“? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehCTFJtz3QI Der japanische Bestsellerautor Fuminori Nakamura im Gespräch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1xo5U8kUJWE Papego Diogenes nimmt mit diesem Buch am Papego Verfahren teil. Der Leser hat die Möglichkeit durch eine kostenlose App, das gedruckte und das digitale Buch zu lesen. Der Leser wählt zwischen Print und eBook. Das funktioniert so: Der Leser scannt die aktuelle Seite ein und die App öffnet die nächsten 100 Seiten. Die Darstellung ist minimalistisch - aber ausreichend. Ich lese tagsüber gerne Print - aber abends im Bett lieber digital. Man braucht kein Licht und stört den Partner nicht. Dafür gebe ich 6 von 5 Punkten. Einfach genial! Voraussetzung ist, dass die Verlage ihre Bücher für Papego freigeben. Als Kennzeichen liegt eine weiße Postkarte mit dem Schriftzug „Diogenes“ und „Lesen Sie jetzt, wie Sie wollen“ bei. Es ist trotzdem kein eBook, sondern nur ein max. 25%iger Auszug daraus.. Fazit zu "Die Maske" Friedrich Nietzsche sagt in „Jenseits von Gut und Böse“: „Und wenn du lange in einen Abgrund blickst, blickt der Abgrund auch in dich hinein“. Das Buch „Die Maske“ füllt dieses Zitat mit Leben. Ein Buch, das fasziniert und gleichzeitig Ekel hervorruft. Es ist ein Buch über menschliche Abgründe und auch als Warnung zu verstehen, sich nicht in eine Rolle pressen zu lassen, sondern sein Schicksal selbst in die Hand zu nehmen. Ich werde den ersten Roman von Fuminori Nakamura „Der Dieb“ auf meine Leseliste setzen. Nakamura ist ein Autor, der bestimmt noch einiges zu sagen hat. Sicherlich erinnert er an Haruki Murakami, weil beide Kritik an der japanischen Gesellschaft üben. Beide weisen darauf hin, dass Japan eine sehr hohe Selbstmordrate hat. Menschen verzweifeln an den Ansprüchen der Gesellschaft. Wie schon gesagt, werde ich von Fuminori Nakamura weitere Werke lesen. Ich kann ihn nur empfehlen! „Die Maske“ ist ein einzigartiges Buch. @diogenes Vielen Dank für das schöne Rezensionsexemplar! Ich vergebe insgesamt 5/5 Punkten.
