Does working out matter if you're not eating right? You're working hard to burn off calories at your workouts but it's hard to burn off a bad diet.
Try to replace normal carbohydrates with complex ones. Complex carbohydrates high fiber products like oats, brown rice etc which will make you feel full even with small servings and doesn't spike up your insulin level.
Eating fat will not make you fat. In fact, fat is essential in your diet.
Proteins are essential.
Focus on the macros - Carbohydrates (the right kind), Proteins and Fat.
Cooking medium - Butter, ghee or coconut oil ‍

The gym is empty. No one seems to be around, and that's just what you wanted. Walking inside, you placed your backpack in the corner of a wall and removed your t-shirt. Working out has become your favourite activity, you must give credits to your best friend for that, he's the one who initiated the fire to getting fit and burning
calories. You usually work out in his place. He's got a whole gym in his house. From the machines to the weights, damn. So you're a bit bored and lonely. Your best friend Kayla is getting engaged in a month and you're supposed to be her
bridesmaid, ain't no way you wanna look bloated and messy, you're determined to tone your body and muscles, plus working out is so fun!! You tied up your hair into a messy bun and began to jog in the treadmill for about 20 minutes.
A woman walked in and greeted me with a smile, I finally had some company, even though I wanted to spend my time alone in the gym. You did all your workouts with weights, and only pushups, planks, and stretching were left. You took a deep breath, 
feeling your muscles getting weaker as you were now tired after an hour. You sipped on your water bottle and then laid on the yoga mat, ready to start off with planks. You counted from 1 to 10, then you relaxed and started counting 1 to 20 with your eyes closed.
"Hey!" You heard a man squeak, and you opened your eyes to meet with your best friend Jungkook under you. "Oh my- fuck-" 
you lost balance and immediately sat up, holding on to your exhaling the sudden shock. Jungkook giggled like a bunny and placed his head on his arm, his elbow on the mat. "Did I scare you?" He questioned, and you gave him a piercing look. "Is that even a question! You made my heart skip a beat!" You hit his arm 
and nodded with a huge smile on his face.  "I didn't expect to see you at the gym on a Saturday evening, you usually curl with your blanket and watch some stupid documentary munching corn curls." You give him a proud look and cross your arms on your chest. 
"I've come out of that habit, now! I find working out more fascinating, so move!" You push him out of the mat and get into your plant position, Jungkook placed his tongue inside his cheek, biting into it as he finds your latest habit very attractive. 
Working out has always been his favourite activity but seeing his best friend who is also one of the most beautiful women he's seen, prioritising workouts kinda turns him on. He's always a flirt, but today seeing you alone in the gym, wearing that tight gym fit and your hair in a messy bun that makes you hotter just makes him feel some tension.
"Two- three-" You start counting, staying in your high plank and exhaling slowly. Jungkook slides under you and watches your features closely. You slowly opened your eyes and scoffed in sudden shock, "What are you doing, kook?!" "Admiring you."
He whispers, and your eyes meet him that is already staring back at you. He does the triangle look. From your eye to your lips to your eye, and that's dangerous. "Don't fall on me, that's not gonna end good." He murmurs with hooded eyes while clenching his jaw and kicking his lips.
His intense stare wasn't making his easy, your messy bun was now bringing more stranges of hair to your face and Jungkook took this opportunity to place the strands behind your ears, his fingers softly rushing your skin while you tried hard to not give up on the plank that's even more than 20 seconds. "You look beautiful."
He whispered, and you gulp, you both breathing heavily after his words. You both continue to have an eye lock without realising he comes forward, placing a kiss on your nose, and then you fall into his chest. He immediately wrapped his arms around you and began to laugh. "Ow-"
you whispered as his rock hardiness hit yours a bit too hard, the man laughing made things worse. "Stop laughing!" Jungkook turned around, placed you on the mat as he hovered over you and looked into your eyes. "Did I make you weak?" 
He asked and you rolled your eyes even though you actually felt weaker now. "Get away!" "Not until you answer my question." He brushed his nose gently on yours and you gasped, "kook-" "excuse me?"
You both faced the voice that belonged to a gym instructor and oh boy was this embarrassing. "This ain't a bedroom, young couple. This a gym." The beautiful muscular black woman spoke, giving you both a smirk before walking away.
"Get out kook!"
You pushed him aside and grabbed your mat and walked to your bag.
"Dinner at mine?"
Jungkook murmured and you looked at him and nodded…

these are just things that help me to stay as safe as possible and still see progress, and boundaries i put in place for myself to prevent permanent damage.

VITAL TIPS THAT HAVE KEPT ME GOING:
if you're new to ed or just considering it, DO NOT purge in the traditional sense. it's a really really slippery slope, and really consumes your life in a way that's so so difficult to recover from. if you're fighting difficult cravings or just need something that's higher calories, try putting it in your mouth and chewing it, then spitting it out and quickly eating something safe. your body produces the digestive chemicals when it senses you chewing, so if you don't eat anything after you spit, it can cause serious problems high restriction
high restriction days are actually really good for keeping your metabolism up. often time with fasting or severe prolonged restriction, your metabolism slows enough that there will be little to no progress. your body will do its job and try to prevent weight loss in order to keep you going, which is counterproductive to the fast in the first place. this isn't my comparison, but metabolism is like a fire. without any fuel, it will diminish and grow weaker and slow down. if you continue to deny it in such a harsh way (ie fasting) it'll fade to just hot coals, which when you then try to ignite with a log or even branches (ie eating), it will refuse to catch and grow again. if you instead let the fire eat up all of it's fuel and then just as it begins to drop give it enough to keep it going (higher calorie days or periods of time), it will continue to burn
hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. thirst is often mistaken for hunger. always carry around water or some other hydrating beverage, and consciously make an effort to drink more then you normal do. after a while, it'll be second nature, and your body will thank you
start doing calisthenics, especially if a full workout/ cardio routine is too overwhelming or exhausting. it still works your body and helps your joint strength, and contributes to toning and resilience without building muscle
eat as much as you want of low cal things, ESPECIALLY all natural ones like fruits and veggies. i find that the easiest way to curb my hunger or oral fixation is to literally grab a whole cucumber or celery stalk and some seasoning, and just go nuts. eating an entire pint of strawberries is not bad for you, especially if it's all you feel up to eating
TAKE VITAMINS. you do not want your hair, skin, teeth, nails, or organs to suffer the brunt of your weightloss. vitamins, supplements, and mineral substitutes are a great and simple way to keep your body as healthy as possible
find a place to talk about it if you can. eds can be really isolating, and having an anonymous blog (lmao me), online friends, trusted person, journal, or anyone else who would be a safe place to vent is really important
take care of yourself, and be compassionate. you're pushing your body really hard. if you need a bag of pretzels to get through studying for that physics test, fucking eat the pretzels. they won't ruin you. just make sure to stop after that one thing- it's only there to keep you going enough to do what you need to do. it's not the gateway to a binge
eat slowly and really be conscious about what you're putting in your body. ask yourself "do i really need this right now?" if the answer is unequivocally yes, fine. but usually the answer is a no or probably not. be sure that what you eat is necessary and the best choice for what your body needs
set off-limit times of the day to prevent binges (ie not eating after 8:00 pm or before 9:00 am)
remember: you are not alone, you are not undeserving of love or recovery, if you are here you are sick enough, no one is beyond help, and you are not defined by your weight. ever.

just wondering if you could share a bit more about navigating your PCOS diagnosis/symptoms? I’m really struggling atm
THIS IS LONG (sorry)
To give some background, my periods have kinda always been irregular, so that was my first symptom of PCOS. They were irregular all through my teens to the point I was getting my period 3-4 times a year. I didn't really experience any other sort of symptoms in my teens.
When I got the chance to actually talk to a doctor about it the first time, I got dismissed immediately, and basically self-diagnosed. In that self-diagnosis, the doctor decided to put me on to the combined pill / daily pill to increase my oestrogen levels, and lower my testosterone levels. But instead of balancing my hormones, I just bled for the whole time I was on the pill (3-4 months), and oestrogen really took hold of my body...
Once I came off the pill I still wasn't experiencing any other form of symptoms, other than irregular periods. But when covid hit (This was a hard time for me) I started to see symptoms like excessive hair, gaining belly fat, irregular periods, feeling tired ALL THE TIME because if bad sleep... I didn't really take it in as to how serious it was, till I really started to feel it affecting my mental health. So I went to two Doctors to try and get a diagnosis and nothing. (3 doctors now)
I went to a 4th and final doctor, who ran a lot of tests on me:
Ultrasound - to see the cysts on my ovaries
Pelvic exam - just to examine my sexual organs for anything else
Blood tests - to measure my hormone levels
Finally diagnosing me with PCOS. So Ultimately it took almost 5-6 years and 4 doctors to get a diagnosis.
First thing I was told is to get onto the pill, but I couldn't because I was at a high risk of blood clotting due to my weight. Then the doctor just told me to lose some weight lmfao. Which I didn't take serious because as a woman with PCOS losing weight is EXTREMELY hard.
After I got diagnosed I did a lot of research. There are 3 things that stood out to me in the research I did:
Inositol (supplement) - allows you to regulate blood sugar (which is important as PCOS is ultimately the irregularity of Insulin production, also insensitivity of it)
Spearmint tea - helps with hirsutism
Less stress - to decrease cortisol levels, as women with PCOS tend to have an increased level
I used these for a while, I did see some improvements but it just wasn't enough. I tried changing my eating habits to being anti-inflammatory, no difference. After doing all of this with no improvements I just dropped it all, and actually started working out. I ended up losing 20+kg in a months, and my period this whole year has been regulated (Thank God), but I also cut out a huge thing that was causing me a lot of stress. I no longer have any symptoms of PCOS, hirsutism here and there but I get laser hair removal on a monthly basis.
I would suggest:
Getting an actually doctor diagnosis
Start working out, a mix of strength training (to increase insulin sensitivity, reduce cortisol levels, and burn calories) and Low-impact workouts too
Continue with any supplements that help you. Right now I take, Iron, Vitamin D, B12, Vitamin C, Fenugreek and drink spearmint tea at least twice a day
When it comes to eating habits I would say eat as if you're genuinely trying to live a healthy life, but don't rescrict yourself from enjoying the food you love. I'm eating healthy but eating more protein because I want a PHATTTT ASSS, and to look like I could punch a wall(jk, not about the ass though)

(I do free weights mostly these days but the same applies for machines. I can also add info about at home workouts as well if you'd like. The principles are the same at their core, but it'll be a little different since a lot people dont have full gyms or a wide set of weights at home)
Easing in and misc information: start at a low weight and focus on form, 100%. You can still go up in weights its just form is important (a lot of the time if I'm feeling pain trying to do a lift its because my form was off). Do warm-up sets to warm up the muscles. So if you're doing 40 lbs on a machine instead of jumping right to that weight you'd use do a set of 30 then a set of 35 and then start doing your 40s. Pick a weight that challenges you but not to the point where you cant properly do the exercise or control your movement, for example using your whole body momentum to lift the weight or letting the machine slam back in place instead of gently releasing. To build muscle you have to have weights that are heavy enough to cause muscle damage that way the body heals the muscle and they heal stronger. So increasing weight is an important part of that muscle building. Of course once you get to a place you're happy with and don't care about gains and would rather maintain the muscle you have, you can do the opposite. Lift weights but put no particular effort into progressing your strength building.
As for recovery: eating, resting, and stretching.
Recovery Eating: you have to eat to support working out. it reduces the length of time youre sore and fuels the workout itself. it sounds like youre wanting to change body composition without losing weight which means youd want to gain then maintain muscle and lose body fat. it is possible for the body to start cannibalizing muscle during workouts if theres no where else to pull that energy from. protein is very also important since that is what the body uses to repair muscle.
Rest: don't do too much. meaning outside of your workouts don't also go training for a marathon or other strenuous activities. itll be counter productive; bodies can only take so much. a nice walk, yoga, or mobility work won't hurt so on off days those are no problem. it gives your body rest to build and repair on those days you dont workout. Sleep is important its when the body repairs and regrows tissue, muscle, etc.
Stretching: I don't have much to say, general mobility helps. A regular stretch routine will help, I do a simple 5 minute one before my workout and unless I'm feeling a little tight I rarely need to go longer. 5 Minute Daily Mobility Routine! | Follow Along | Full Body (youtube.com) This is the one I used a lot. On days off I find a yoga youtube video and do 15-30 mins.
Soreness I can't say how long is too long. But no workout should leave you so sore to the point that sitting down is be painful. You can look at soreness as the gap between the exercise and what you did to rebuild them in the hours and days afterwards in terms of getting proper amounts of water, food, and rest. If you set the right pace for yourself and do the necessary things for recovery there's really no time you should feel debilitatingly sore after a workout. On days where I may have pushed myself a little too hard on a previous workout I'll go on a walk or spend some time doing relaxed stretching on off days.
Recomposition I mentioned this at the beginning but what youre aiming for is recomp. So while you cant target specific fat building muscle will help overall. The reason is that muscle burns more calories at rest than fat does. Without getting too deep into it that means through the day you will burn more calories while just doing your normal day to day. which means the body is drawing on fat storage more throughout the day for that energy
Routine The best routine is one you can stick with. There were way too many times I made a 5 days a week routine that was me lifting in the gym, doing gymnastics things, and doing hour long yoga. It was unsustainable and after a point I stopped working out altogether. Now I'm at 3-4 times a week, I allow plenty of flexibility. meaning if I miss day 2 that's on Wednesday for whatever reason, it's fine I can do it Thursday then day 3 on Saturday and it'll be a week where I do 3 workouts and thats fine. Personally, I don't like spending a lot of time in the gym or working out lol. So unless I am doing more exercises than usual, it doesn't go over an hour and is normally about 45 minutes.
