Jackass 4.5 (2022, dir. Jeff Tremaine) - review by Rookie-Critic

Jackass 4.5 has managed, just like the Forever did with the other mainline Jackass movies, to best all the other .5s on sheer good vibes alone. I know my deep belief in the contrary that Jackass isn't for everyone, but god damnit I can't help it, I love these guys. I love their sheer willpower to keep going, I love their camaraderie, I love their willingness to bring fresh blood into their high-risk world, and I love all of the newbies to death, as well. Yes, it's grotesque. Yes, it's juvenile. Yes, it's the most baseline, stupid humor out there. I don't care. I'm not sure if it's the nostalgia or what, but this formula with this cast just works for me, and Forever/4.5 are, I think, the peak of what this franchise can achieve. I was grinning ear-to-ear (when I wasn't outright laughing my ass off) the whole time.

283 - Garden State

We're finally diving into the time capsule that is 2004's Garden State. The writing and directing debut of Zach Braff, the film stars Braff as a depressed actor who returns to his Jersey home to attend his mother's funeral. Once there, he reunites with former friends and maybe meets the love of his life (played by Natalie Portman in an urtext manic pixie dream girl mode) who helps him reevaluate his life. The film was a Sundance sensation and unleashed a gangbusters trailer package, igniting the love of young cinephiles, if not the Academy.

This episode, we discuss what about the film has aged poorly and its place in Fox Searchlight's very busy 2004. We also talk about the film's incredibly popular and definitive soundtrack, Portman's performance and career up to her first Oscar nomination, and Jackie Hoffman's brief performance in the film hilariously singing Lionel Ritchie.

Topics also include the personal stages of life we were in when we first saw the film, how gross it is to share headphones, and Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling winning Best Kiss.

Couldn't keep the smaller players a secret anymore, so I cast the rest of the Jackass cast as more characters from The Little Mermaid.

Dave England as Grimsby

Did you expect the guy with a crap-tastic sense of humor to play Princess Rachel/Prince Eric's second-in-command? I just cast him as such for a joke.

Bam Margera and Ryan Dunn as Flotsam and Jetsam

Just like Dunn and Bam were the best of friends, Flotsam and Jetsam, the sneaky, conniving eel duo, assist Preston/Ursula in her infinitely deranged plan to thwart Ehren/Ariel's plan to fall in love with Rachel/Eric.

All the rest of the new cast members besides Rachel as Ariel's sisters...er, siblings

Because Zach, Poopies, Eric Manaka, and Jasper didn't have that much screentime apart as much as they all did combined, the boys have a significantly smaller role in the Little Mermaid imagine in spite of Poopies' status as a surfer and Jasper's body surfing and chair surfing stunts in Jackass Forever.

It's 6 am and I haven't slept from nervousness. I see Amazon Prime has for this included. I'm gonna watch it.

Honestly I've never really done anything "jackass-like", like some people that made the news or got injured doing stupid things like this.

But considering what pain I've always been in, and then the pain I'm in from just regular injuries and my fibromyalgia pain and stuff like that, or just being 37 and you start feeling your body more than when you were 12 years old.

I do not envy anyone in Jackass. There's no fame worth the the amount of debilitating pain some of them must be in from their 22 years of injuries and "stunts".

My broken down body had been hounding me from a young age, that's enough to make life awful many days. I am so glad it's not worse, considering its already fucking terrible.

Still a fun movie, nostalgia to look back on the crazy "tasteless" shit I would watch with my dad or my friends.

BUT seeing Johnny Knoxville get knocked cold by that bull at 51(?) And learning that he had suffered cognitive impairment for several days/weeks after. That's not worth it. You couldn't pay me enough. That scary. He's not 20-30 anymore. His recovery from a concussion isn't what it used to be. And his brain is going to be so bad when he's elderly.

ALSO: I give Steve-O a huge amount of credit for being sober for almost 10+ years now. Truly an excellent thing. I hope he's clean forever. He's crazy as ever, but he's got a totally different personality even without that shit.

Rookie-Critic's Top 25 Films of 2022: #24: Jackass Forever/Jackass 4.5 (dir. Jeff Tremaine)

I love Jackass. I love everything about Jackass and I always have. It's not just the gross-outs, the nut shots, the insanity of it all, it's the brotherhood. It's been the magic piece of the puzzle from the very, very beginning of Knoxville & Co.'s humble start on MTV, and never has that wondrous camaraderie been more front and center than in Jackass Forever. Don't get me wrong, the stunts are still as bombastic and hilarious as ever, but they could almost do anything at all and I'd be here for it. The reason I keep coming back is that I love these idiots, and now they've added even more new, young idiots to pass the torch to, and this new cast of daredevils fits the bill and are 100% worthy of taking that torch lighting the closest possible thing on fire with it. I am fully aware of how dumb this all is, I am more than cognizant of how baseline the humor of it all is, but that never stopped it from being the most fun experience I had at the movies last year. The theater wasn't packed, but everyone in there knew exactly why we were all there, and it cast an air of brotherhood over the room that was infectious. The first hour of this movie had me laughing so hard that tears were being forcefully ejected from my tear ducts from the pressure being applied to them from my cheek bones, so much so that my face hurt for awhile after the credits rolled. These dudes create beauty from stupidity, and I can't get enough of it. Jackass Forever is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video and Paramount+, and Jackass 4.5 is currently streaming on Netflix. Da Vinci Code Alcroft AU

Mycroft Holmes, an Oxford symbolism professor, is suddenly involved in a murder case.

The victim? Sebastian Moran, the curator of the Louvre.

The prime suspect? Mycroft himself.

All gets more complicated when Albert Moriarty, a french cryptologist, gets involved.

Mycroft discovers that Albert has personal stakes in the case. Sebastian was his best friend and legal guardian.

He took Albert in after a car crash killed his parents and his three younger brothers.

But Sebastian left clues in the Museum about a secret society related to the Holy Grail, and it's their job to find it and find his murderer.

Ok, now I'm tired. A few more highlights:

James is Sebastian's partner and the one who raised Albert's younger brothers, William and Louis, in secret.

That's right, they didn't die. The parents and the original William did though.

The guardians are Fred Porlock, Jack Renfield and Vivian Moneypenny (let's pretend women can be guardians).

The crazy monk is Billy (don't worry, he lives), and the bishop is Zach Patterson.

Sherlock is the Holy Grail expert that they consult, and John is his loyal servant.

In this AU, he's not a villain. He and William are working together to protect the Grail from everyone, and Sebastian and the guardians were planning to divulge the secret, so they were killed.

Albert and Mycroft have to choose between their brothers and justice.

However, before they decide on anything, James reports that Sherlock and William ran away to America, to never be seen again.

Sebastian's and the guardian's memory lives on in Mycroft and Albert.

Have princess and Lloyd ever celebrated his birthday together? Has she done something for him like how he pulled all the stops for her birthday? I feel like he’d be shy about celebrating his day but she would def show him how much he is loved by her 🥰

Thank you for the lovely ask! 

I think Lloyd is a little reserved about his birthday. However, for Princess, birthdays are a big deal because her family always celebrated with dinner, cake, and presents. Lloyd’s impact on her life and his support as a friend and mentor caused them to grow closer, so when his birthday rolled around, she really wanted to help him celebrate. Working with him made her feel like Dr. Watson, trailing along with Sherlock Holmes on his adventures. 

For the first birthday he had after you were hired, you were a bit nervous about surprising him. Though you’d thought a lot about what to get him, Lloyd wasn’t someone you could easily buy gifts for. He had a habit of getting himself anything and everything that caught his eye. Therefore, you leaned into your other options and decided the best way to celebrate his birthday would be with a meaningful gesture. 

On Lloyd’s 39th birthday, you planned a picnic for Lloyd and his friends. You were aware of his grumpy attitude towards his birthday but didn’t let that hamper your enthusiasm.

That morning Bishop’s assistant had ordered him a birthday cake that was served at the morning staff meeting. You were proud of him for holding back his cranky comments until you were safely ensconced in his office and patiently listened to his grousing about cake being served before lunch. When you suggested he take a proactive approach and arrange for a vegetarian platter to be served next year, he sneered and declared that he hated celebrating his birthday. It wasn’t the best kick off to your surprise, so you warned him that you had something planned for this afternoon.

This information seemed to peak his interest and restored your hope that the catered picnic you’d arranged would go over well. Fortunately, you had a busy morning doing interviews at the courthouse in preparation for a mediation case that would be arbitrated next week. The distraction saved you from prying questions from the birthday boy. 

As you drove back from the courthouse meetings, Lloyd sat in the passenger seat, absorbed in reading his notes. 

“Are you hungry?”

He was so focused on his paperwork that he didn’t look up. 

“Lloyd? Are you hungry?”

“Hmm? Yeah, I could use a bite.” You turned left at the park and Lloyd looked out the window. “This isn’t the office. Why are we here?” 

“Happy birthday! I thought we’d celebrate with a picnic. Zach is picking up the food for me and he’ll be here in five minutes, so please don’t say no.”

Lloyd helped you set up the picnic table with a plastic table cloth and set out the placemats before Zach pulled up in his Chevy Tahoe. Landon and Jake carried over the large cooler and unpacked the containers from Garden Table Bistro. It was Lloyd’s favorite lunch restaurant near the office. There were caprese salad skewers, an orzo salad, baked salmon filets, sweet potato fries, and eclairs, and lemon rolls for dessert.

“You arranged all of this for me?” Lloyd asked.

“Well, your birthday only happens once a year. It’s customary to celebrate the occasion with friends.”

“I’m aware of the practice,” he said dryly.

Zach had brought a football for after lunch and there was a debate over how teams should be divided. Jake had poor hand eye-coordination and so he was declared the referee. At Landon’s insistence you were paired with Lloyd to counterbalance his semi-professional skills. 

Much to everyone’s surprise, you didn’t end up being much of a handicap. Landon and Zach tried to gang up on Lloyd, which left you wide open. His throwing arm was just as accurate as it had been when he was quarterback at Harvard and you caught the pass easily to score a touchdown. After that, the game remained deadlocked. When Jake finally called time, you and Lloyd won 0 to 1.

When the others left, Lloyd slung his arm around your shoulders and pulled you into a hug. His lips brushed your temple, setting off butterflies in your stomach. 

“Thank you for today, Princess. I had a good time.”

“Really? You’re not just saying that? After you hated the cake this morning, I was worried about your reaction. If you want me to ignore your birthday next year…”

“Sweetheart, I haven’t had anyone around who wanted to celebrate my birthday for nearly thirty years. What you did was personal. It was for me. The cake they served this morning was only there because everyone wanted an excuse to stuff their faces with chocolate.” 

“Does that mean I can start planning something for next year?”

Lloyd squeezed you. “I’d like that.”

“Awesome. You know, if someone had told me a year ago I’d be playing touch football with you on your birthday, I’d have told them to get their head checked.” 

“We may not have gotten off on the right foot, but I’m glad you stuck around.” 

You turned your face into his neck to appreciate the faint scent of his cologne mingled with sweat before stepping back. 

“So am I.”

By his 40th birthday you and Lloyd had grown much closer which was why you felt comfortable giving him a spa certificate for two. Of course, he invited you along as his guest. 

You enjoyed a complimentary breakfast on the patio with herbal tea before soaking in the outdoor mineral pool. Lloyd had selected a Swedish massage while you went for the hot stone option. After your massages, you met in the garden for lunch before your mani-pedis and appointment with the esthetician for facials. The final event of the day was a relaxing hour in the sauna where you tried to avoid drooling at Lloyd’s chest muscles. 

The day at the spa marked a shift in the intensity of your physical interest in Lloyd. You’d always been aware of him as an attractive man, but seeing his chest, arms, and legs up close and personal twice in one day left you with plenty of fodder for lusty dreams. Therefore, as enjoyable as your spa day was, for his 41st birthday you retreated to less personal territory and gave him a private tour of his favorite craft brewery and tap house in Maryland with three guests. You’d expected him to invite Zach, Jake, and Landon, but the latter ended up having plans with his girlfriend. In light of the group needing a designated driver and your well-documented aversion to beer, you’d ended up tagging along. 

Your strategy of giving Lloyd gifts that focused around time and enjoyment made him feel valued because they were so personal. In the past he’d viewed his birthday as just another day, but thanks to your influence, it’s become his favorite day of the year. He spends the entire month prior to his birthday looking forward to whatever you’re going to think of next. There was an incredible sense of contentment that had taken root in his life since you’d become a part of it. His once chaotic existence now held some semblance of stability. It wasn’t that his wild mood swings and stubborn nature had been vanquished, but your support that had caused the difference. You gave him balance and helped him lean into his strengths instead of asking him to change - and that was a gift he was thankful for everyday.
