Chapter Summary: Your quiet night at Lover's Lake gets interrupted by the last person you've wanted to see: William fucking Hargrove; but just when you thought the night couldn't get any worse, you and Billy witness something strange hiding in the shadows of Hawkins' forest. 

Chapter Warnings: A lot of teasing and arguing (this is an enemies to lovers trope, after all). Tension™ and one small reference to a sexual activity. Swearing (like a lot). Brief Mentions of Billy being injured and getting into fights. A single demodog appears.

It’s a quiet night in Hawkins, and it’s exactly what you’ve been craving. With a small content sigh, you stretch out on your little picnic blanket before adjusting the headphones of your Walkman. You’ve made it just in time to your favorite spot near Lover’s Lake to watch the full moon rise. It’s a relaxing habit that you try to cultivate, given you find the time and the weather is in your favor; something that’s not always the case. But tonight, you’re blessed with both, a cloudless sky, and enough time to just lay in the grass for a while and enjoy the beauty of the slowly rising moon. 

To your surprise and relief, there’s no one else around, save for the singing crickets and occasional scudding owl.

The moon, big and low on the horizon, gives its surroundings a soft golden glow, and the peacefulness of the moment is only amplified by the gentle music that’s coming through the headphones of your Walkman. For a while you get lost in the comforting feeling of it all: The sound of the crickets chirping in the background; the opening notes of Silver Springs, and the breathtaking sight of the full moon.

You’re about to get to your favorite part of the song when a sudden loud noise startles you. Quickly lowering your headphones, it takes you a brief moment to identify the foreign sound as that of a loud car engine coming closer, paired with some music that’s being blasted from inside the car.

You can’t help but roll your eyes in slight annoyance. Even though you know that the location of Lover’s Lake is frequently used by hormonal teens as a secret make-out and sometimes hang-out spot, you had hoped to be its only visitor today.

The place you are occupying with your picnic blanket is rather reclusive and hidden from view, shielding you from both: The potential look of curious eyes, and the unwanted blinding lights of car headlights. But despite your secluded spot, the blaring music coming from the intruding car still finds its way over to you. At first, you just try to ignore it, turning the volume of your Walkman up to the max, but without much success – the stranger’s music being just too loud and distracting.

With a discontent huff, you put your Walkman away before getting up. There isn’t much use in staying with that kind of persistent background noise, and so, as you fold your picnic blanket back up, storing it in your little backpack, you decide that it’s best to make your way back home again.

Still, you can’t help but glance back at the moon with sorrowful eyes. You had anticipated to watch it slowly wander over the tree line of the nearby forest and maybe see its rising form reflect in the quiet lake for a while; but alas, the dreamy atmosphere has been more than a little disturbed. Maybe you’ll try your luck tomorrow again, you think. Even if it means that by then the moon will already be in its waning phase.

As you leave your secluded spot behind, walking towards the more official and frequently used part of the lake side, the music also starts to get louder, and you can’t help but quietly curse whoever thinks a free 200 decibel loud Metallica concert is just what this place needs. Egoistical, obnoxious idiot with a dumb car, you think, as you stomp down a little path at the edge of the lake – until suddenly said car comes into view and your heart stops.

Oh no.

Even without the moon shining as brightly as it does, you’d probably be able to recognize the car just by its rough shape alone. If your previous discontent had your blood simmering in annoyance, it is now boiling in your veins with nothing but hot anger. You’re pretty sure you know exactly whose car this is –  after all, it’s not like a lot of people drive that exact Camaro model in the small town of Hawkins, Indiana.

“William fucking Hargrove,” You hiss underneath your breath, voice dripping with disdain.

What is he still doing in Hawkins, anyway? you wonder quietly to yourself while getting closer to the car, that you’ll unfortunately have to walk right past, in order to get back to the main road.

To be honest, you hadn’t seen your previous ex-classmate in quite a while. Not since graduating high school and transferring to the University of Indiana almost two years ago.

Nowadays you only visit Hawkins sporadically, and so far you’d been lucky enough to not cross paths with Billy. You had always assumed that he’d left Hawkins long ago, settling down somewhere on the west coast instead. Back in school he never kept his hatred for Hawkins a secret whatsoever; and you reckoned that he would have left for the sunny state of California right after graduation - but apparently he did not.

Or maybe he’s just back to visit family like you’re doing right now, you contemplate, before shaking your head, trying to rid your mind of these thoughts.

Who cares. You certainly don’t.

To say you never liked Billy would be an understatement, but that cold disdain had always been a mutual feeling. His violent attitude, anger and recklessness had always irritated and infuriated you during your shared school days, and surely something about you must have rubbed him the wrong way as well, since he made his dislike towards you almost as clear as his dislike for Hawkins.

Whatever.

With the amount of time that’s passed, he might not even recognize you. Hell! It might not even be him. Maybe it’s just some other dude with a pretentious car and similar bad music taste.

Speeding up your steps, you decide to pass the front of the Camaro as quickly as possible. Maybe you’ll be lucky and even go by unnoticed. Gripping your backpack tighter, you keep your eyes casted forward, trying to deliberately ignore the car to your right and the noise coming from it.

The music is so loud and booming now, that you can actually feel it pulsate through your body, quickening your heartbeat. It feels like you can’t even hear your own thoughts anymore – and how the person inside the car is not yet deaf or unconscious with blown-out eardrums is beyond you; but you’ll be damned to turn your head even slightly in the direction of the windshield and its passenger.

After successfully walking past the car, you’re about to quietly congratulate yourself for seemingly making it without having drawn any unwanted attention to yourself, when the deafening music suddenly stops.

As does your heart for a second.

Straining your now ringing ears, you pick up the quick sound of a car door opening. And then, to your own little horror, you hear your last name being called out by a deep, raspy voice. One that still cuts through you even more than the irritating music just did.

And it’s Billy.

There’s no way in hell that you wouldn’t recognize his annoying voice anywhere – to your complete distaste, of course!

But in your mind there’s a brief moment of panic as you try to quickly go through the list of all the possible reactions. You even contemplate ignoring him or pretending that you didn’t hear him - that one might even be a believable side effect after having had the displeasure of being exposed to his deafening music; but ultimately you decide against it.

Walking away like this wouldn’t just feel silly; it would probably also look silly. Not that you care how you might look to Billy Hargrove of all people - but still. You decide to come to a careful halt, before slowly turning around.

“Yeah?” you ask, voice deliberately confused, until you’re faced with the sight of no other than Billy leaning against his opened car door.

You try not to notice how he still looks the same. Safe for the fact that he seems somewhat taller now, and maybe a little bit more buff - how’s that even possible? It’s probably just the moonlight playing tricks on you, you decide. Ha!

He also still wears his hair in that deliberately messy bundle of curls he calls a hairstyle; how those mullets are still legal is beyond you. Humankind might as well go extinct because of them.

And if your eyes aren’t deceiving you, which they might as well be, given their odd assessment of his current fitness status, he still hasn’t abandoned his denim-on-denim style. But that’s whatever.

“Hargrove,” you just observe, voice flat and uninterested. You’re not really in the mood for making small talk - especially not of it is Billy. But to your contempt the tough guy dressed in all denim, standing tall next to his car with a lit cigarette hanging loosely between his fingers, seems to have entirely other plans, as he calls out your last name again. Only this time it’s without any questioning undertones. Instead, it’s a statement – one that he quickly follows up with another question. “What are you doing here?”

“Do you mean ‘here’ as in Lover’s Lake or Hawkins?” You call back, and with a flick of his cigarette and a smug smile he simply states “Both.”

“I could ask you the same thing.”

“Well, I asked first.”

You don’t try to hide the roll of your eyes, though you doubt that he’ll be able to actually witness those from the distance.

“That’s none of your business, Hargrove.”

Billy just lets out an annoyed huff. “Come on, don’t tell me you’re still just as stuck up as you were during high school.”

This time your eyeroll is so sharp, it probably could be witnessed from the moon or any other interstellar space object for that matter. It’s certainly not the first time you’ve been called stuck up. Not just from Billy, but at this point you don’t really care. It’s what you usually get called by men if you dare to give them even the slightest piece of your mind.

Deciding that you’ve wasted enough of your time on Billy already, you turn back around sharply, before calling out over your shoulder: “Whatever, Hargrove. Have fun deafening yourself and every other nocturnal animal in a one-mile radius,” while raising your middle finger as a last farewell.

You’re not entirely sure, but you think you hear Billy mumble something along the line of “fucking hell,” or maybe even “fucking bitch,” but you decide it’s best to just ignore it. There’s no use in arguing with him; you’ve done that more than enough times during your high school days.

You contemplate getting your Walkman out to listen to some actually enjoyable music on the rest of your walk back home, but a sudden movement out of the corner of your eye makes you stop in your tracks. Turning your head in its direction, your eyes trail over the looming underwood of the surrounding forest, but there’s nothing out of the ordinary, except for a few rustling branches, and a faint crunching sound.

Must have been a fleeting dear, you think, or maybe even a coyote, but you try not to pay it too much mind. It’s not unusual to cross paths with the occasional forest animal, after all. What is unusual, however, is that Billy’s voice calls out to you once more. 

„Don’t tell me you’re going to walk all the way back to Hawkins.“

Goddamn it.

A small huff escapes your lips, but you will not let him taunt you.

„I appreciate your concern, Hargrove, but I think I will be fine.“ Voice dripping with venom, you decide to simply continue walking.

„Oh, I’m not concerned. Just observing the fact that you’ll have to walk home how many miles again?”

Three, you think. It’s roughly three miles back home if you take the short cut through a small part of the woods. And that’s fine. You’re fine. You’ve happily walked the whole way here, and you’ll be more than happy to walk the whole way back home again as well.

“Isn’t Loch Nora like four miles away.”

Ignore him. Ignore him. Ignore him.

“It’s three.”

Fuck. Why would you say anything?! Silently scolding yourself, you decide to just preventatively bite your tongue for the near future, or as long as Billy Hargrove sticks around, which hopefully won’t be that long.

But the guy in question keeps doing the opposite of what you want, it seems, because that fucker just won’t stop talking.

“Don’t you think that’s a little bit dangerous.”

“Don’t you think that’s entirely none of your business.”

“I guess you haven’t heard about the rumors then,” Billy states nonchalantly.

Don’t take the bait. Don’t take the bait. Don’t-

“What rumor?”

Fuuuck. What in good god’s name is wrong with you.

“The feral bear.”

You huff in disbelief; how stupid does he think you are?

“Yeah, right. There are no bears in Hawkins.”

“There are now. Have been for a while.”

“Hargrove, I don’t know what game you think you’re playing, but-“

There’s another weird sound coming from the woods. This time it’s louder than before, and you can’t help but jump a little in surprise. Looking back at Billy, you instantly know he saw your little stunt, judging by the catty smile that graces his face.

“Well, maybe there’s no bear. Maybe there is. Seems like you’ll just have to find out. Good luck.” With a shrug of his shoulder, Billy retreats back to his car.

“Thanks, dickhead.”

“Always, Sweetheart.”

You don’t know who of you sounds more poisonous, but it’s not like it matters. Not to you anyways, oh no, far from it!

“You know I could just drive you home, if you ask nicely enough.”

“Right. And by 'asking nicely' you probably mean a blowjob. Thanks, but I think I’d rather get eaten by a fucking feral bear.” You put the last two words in air quotes, before decidedly stomping off.

The longer you’ll argue with Billy, the later it’s going to get, and while you wouldn’t call yourself particularly suspicious, you’d rather not wander through the woods at midnight.

Without sparing Billy another glance or word, you continue making your way towards the main road. Ignoring the sound of Billy’s vanishing steps, the booming noise of his car door closing, and even the rattling and vibrating tone of its starting engine.

Part of yourself is relived at the prospect of him leaving, but part of you also feels somewhat uneasy by the idea of being all alone and by yourself now. As much as you’re sure that there are no bears in Hawkins, you also have to admit that you haven’t visited this place in months, and you’re far from up to date on its current wildlife populations. You hate the realization that Billy might have succeeded in his attempt to get to you with his bear bullshit. Even if it’s most likely entirely made up and false.

It’s only when his car starts slowing down next to you, that you’re pulled out of your thoughts again, while Billy grins at you through his rolled-down window.

“Come on, get in. I don’t want to be responsible if you get eaten by a bear,” he teases, “Just say pretty please and-“

There’s another loud rustling sound, coming from the tree line right behind you and Billy gives you a pointed look.

“Could be the bear.”

“Doubt it. It’s probably just a dear.”

“Well, tell me about it in the next few days if you make it home alive then.”

Crossing your arms defensively, you try to stand your ground, whilst ignoring the way your heart rate keeps picking up with every following unknown forest sound.

“I’ll be fine.”

“Uh-huh, a fine meal for a bear, you mean?”

“Oh, fuck off! If you think you’ll get under my skin with this bullshit you’re mistaken! Just leave Hargrove! I don’t need your help and I certainly won’t be begging for it either.”

For the first time this night, the sigh that leaves Billy’s lips isn’t mocking or annoyed, but defeated.

“Just get in. You don’t even have to ask or beg nicely - even though I would very much like to see that.”

Of course, you would, you’re about to huff, but behind his teasing words is a seriousness that has your ears perking up, and for the first time you actually contemplate getting into his car.

“You’re not joking about that bear thing, are you?” you wonder quietly after a small pause and Billy simply shakes his head once more.

“Listen. I’m not going to force you to get into my car, but people do say that there is something weird and dangerous hiding inside those woods lately.”

“Don’t tell me you saw that bear yourself,” you ask, and it’s the second question tonight, without any sarcastic undertones, that you throw his way.

“I didn’t, but my sister did. The authorities say that it must be a feral bear, and her sighting wasn’t the only one either. It’s apparently better to stay out of these woods, especially during the nights.”

Pondering his words for a moment, you try to figure out what you should do. The prospect of sitting in a car with Billy is almost as unpleasant as the idea of being attacked and eaten by a feral bear. But to your own disdain you have to admit that the bear prospect seems slightly worse. Not by much, but still.

“Fine,” you force out reluctantly, trying not to notice the self-satisfied look that graces Billy’s moonlit features now.

With quick strides you walk around the car, getting into the passenger side while ignoring the feeling of Billy’s piercing eyes on you, or his amused smile as he watches you struggle with the seat belt.

“Need help there, Sweetheart?” His voice is dripping in mock concern, and with the way the term of endearment falls from his lips, he might as well have called you a bitch.

“No. I’m fine,” you grunt between clenched teeth. The whole situation is humiliating enough by itself – getting helped by Billy Hargrove, you know he’ll never let you live that down. But luckily, you don’t really live in Hawkins anymore, and after tonight you probably won’t see him again for the next few months, maybe even years, if you’re really lucky.

After finally clicking the seatbelt in place, you let out a small satisfied sigh. Your pleased mood is only short-lived though, because as soon as your seatbelt is fastened, Billy decides to speed off with an intensity that has you gripping your seat in blank horror.

“Hargrove!” you curse, “If I had known that the real decision was between getting killed in a car accident or by a feral bear, I would have taken the fucking bear.”

“Uh-huh.” He states, before adding with an amused smile that doesn’t leave hope for anything good: “Care for some music, Princess?”

“Don‘t-“

You try to slap his hand away from the car stereo, but it’s already too late. If the speed of the car didn’t blow off your ears, the now blaring music certainly does the trick.

Oh god.

This is hell.

Your own personal little hell.

You’re not sure what you did to deserve this, but it must have been quite the affront since warranting such a fate.

You’re so dizzy, it even takes you a moment to turn the music down to a somewhat tolerable level, in the quiet hope that Billy won’t turn it up again in a second. To your relieve he doesn’t, but instead he starts talking again. How does this night keep getting worse?!

“So, what were you doing at the lake?” he asks once more, and you deflect with a huff, “Stuff.”

“Uh-huh.”

“And you?”

“Stuff.”

“Sounds fun.”

This conversation is as delightful as it is insightful, you think. Perfect.

“You can just let me out as soon as we pass the Hawkins sign,” you offer, “I doubt I’ll be crossing paths with the bear from there.”

“Bullshit.” Billy states, and without elaborating further, he continues: “So, since when are you back in Hawkins?”

“Missed me much, did you?” you tease, and Billy rolls his eyes with just the hint of a smile. “Dream on, Sweetheart. Dream on.”

“You mean the nightmare I’m currently trapped in?”

“Careful now. I can always turn the music back up.”

“So, you do admit that your music taste sucks. How you still have a hearing by the way is beyond me.”

“Is this your way of telling me you’re concerned for my well-being?”

“Pah! You wish, Hargrove!”

Looking over at Billy, his eyes are still trained on the road, and you use that moment to let your eyes wander briefly over his moonlit features once more.

Freckles still adorn his slightly sun-kissed skin, and his blue eyes are still framed by those infuriatingly long lashes that no guy really deserves. Certainly not Billy.

But there’s also a faint shadow forming on his right cheekbone, and it takes you a second to realize that it’s the blooming outline of a bruise. Still getting into trouble, it seems; but you keep that thought to yourself.

Turning your gaze back on to the road, you watch the quickly bypassing trees of the surrounding forest for a moment before getting dizzy again.

This guy’s driving seriously sucks.

Your about to close your eyes with a small groan when a sudden movement at the edge of the woods catches your attention.

“Fuck! Look out!” You exclaim, your hand instinctively reaching out towards Billy’s on the stick shift to get his attention.

Everything that follows happens really quickly, as the shape starts running right into the road and Billy hits the brake with a force that makes your stomach turn. Eyes wide, you brace yourself for the impact, but luckily that never comes.

The screeching sound of the brake is still ringing in your ears as you watch in both quiet horror and relief how the odd-looking animal scurries away quickly across the street into the depth of the forest, but not before turning its head in your direction once more and letting out a piercing scream.

For a split second everything is quiet, safe for yours and Billy’s shallow pants before you both exclaim breathless and horrified: “What the fuck was that?”

Your eyes are still trained on the spot where that weird creature stood mere seconds ago, as you try to wrap your head around what you just witnessed.

Billy is the first to break the silence again – because of course he is.

“Fuck, well that certainly didn’t look like a dear.” He states with a scoff, and a pointed look your way.

“Bite me, Hargrove, it didn’t look like a bear either.” You blow back, voice just as harsh.

“Maybe it was … like a small bear?” Billy tries, and another disbelieving huff leaves your lips.

“Don’t tell me your eyes are as fucked as your hearing, Hargrove. A bear, my ass! A bear that forgot his fucking fur at home. I’m starting to think you don’t even know what a bear looks like.”

There’s a short moment of silence before you add in a mumble, “Its fucking face looked like a goddamn flower and you’re talking about a bear.”

“So, you did see that too.” Billy breathes out.

“Yeah,” you admit quietly, “but I really wish I didn’t.”

It seems like time just stops for a while, as you two sit there in complete silence, the car on quiet hold in the middle of the road. As much as you try to process what just happened, you really can’t. Everything feels like a fever dream and entirely unreal.

What kind of creature looks like that? You rack your brain for a sensible answer, but there isn’t any that you can come up with.

And then, the frightening thought crosses your mind, that the weird sounds in the woods earlier could have been this uncanny being all along – or worse, what would have happened if you hadn’t taken Billy up on his offer? Would you have crossed path with it on your walk home? You doubt that that encounter would have been of the pleasant kind. God, this is a mess. 

You’re not sure how long you two stay like that – still and quiet, and lost in thought – but at some point Billy carefully clears his throat, before asking, voice unusually soft: “Do you want to-“

“Get home, and forget this night ever happened? Yes, please!”

“Right,” Billy states, and for a moment it seems like wants to say something else, before starting the car up again.

“You’ll navigate once we reach Loch Nora.”

It’s less of a question, and more of an instruction; still, you nod in agreement, relieved at the subject change. 

“Sure, but you don’t actually have to drive me all the way there. You can just let me out on your street, and I’ll walk the rest.”

“My street?”

“Well, assuming your family still lives on Cherry Lane. That wouldn’t be too far off from my neighborhood.”

“You remember where I live?”

“Don’t get your panties twisted, Hargrove. I just have a good memory, you’re not that special.”

Billy huffs at that, but otherwise he stays oddly quiet while continuing to drive.

Looking out of the window, you notice that you’re about to reach Hawkins, and at the sight of the nearing buildings, you let out a small sigh of relieve. As silly as it might seem, you feel a little safer now, especially at the prospect of getting and being home soon.

“You still haven’t told me what you were doing all alone at Lover’s Lake.” Billy suddenly cuts through the silence, and it catches you somewhat off-guard.

For a moment you think about reiterating your previous narrative, that it’s really none of his business, but something in you stops before any harsh words can leave your lips.

Instead, you simply state: “The moon.”

“What?”

“The moon. I was just looking at the moon.”

“What?”

“Oh, goddamn, Hargrove! You really need to stop blowing your eardrums out like that. I was watching the moon rise. Or-well, that was my intention anyway until you and your torturous music came along.”

Your voice takes on a bit of a scolding tone, and out of the corner of your eye you almost think you see Billy flinch, though you might be mistaken. It certainly wouldn’t be the first time tonight that the moonlight played some trick on you. 

“Well, I didn’t know anyone else was around.” Billy defends himself, and to your dismay, you realize that you hadn’t really considered that before. After all, your favorite spot was rather hidden.  

“So, what were you doing there then?” You counter-ask, not wanting to admit that he might have a point, and instead trying to change the subject.

“Nothing.” His answer comes out entirely too quickly, and you furrow your brows in confusion.

“Well, that didn’t sound suspicious at all,” you tease with a questioning side glance, and Billy shoots you an unamused look back, before clarifying: “I just… needed a moment and place to cool down.”

“Ah. I see.”

You don’t really feel like you’re in a position to ask any follow-up questions, but you do quietly assume that his statement might correlate in some way with the blooming bruise on his face.

That’s none of your business, you tell yourself. 

The Billy you knew had always had a reputation as someone who would frequently get himself into trouble and never back down from a fight, so why did the prospect of that now seem disheartening to you? Did you really think he would change? And into what exactly?

But that’s enough thinking about a guy you now barely know or care about.

“So, are you currently visiting your family as well?” You wonder aloud instead, trying to keep both, your voice and talking topic light; yet Billy’s answer is nothing but an irritated huff, that you can’t quite place.

“Was that a yes-huff or a no-huff?”

“That was an ‘it’s none of your fucking business’-huff.”

“Ah, I didn’t know those were part of your vocabulary too.” 

“Fuck off.” 

“Gladly. But if you’re trying to get to my place, you have to take the next turn right.”

Billy’s response comes out quiet and huffy, but it does sound suspiciously like a mumbled and slightly offended "I knew that.” 

Biting your lip, you turn your attention away from him, and instead take a brief glance through his car. It’s not as untidy as you thought it would be, except for an empty and crumbled-up cigarette box near your feet, that you can’t quite reach. You’re about to lean down, and pick it up, when-

“I still live there.” Billy’s low voice cuts through the quietness of the car and right into your bones.

“What?”

“Cherry Lane,” he clarifies, “I still live there.”

“Oh.”

You’re not sure what you should say, congratulations, my condolences, ha! I knew it? None of that seems quite right, especially if you consider the dejected bitterness with which he said it, like it was some sort of guilty admission. 

Wait.

Since when do you care about Billy Hargrove’s feelings?

“Okay, well, don’t look that surprised,” he grumbles, pulling you back from your thoughts, his belligerent tone right back in place.

“What-No! I just… I guess, I just always assumed that you wouldn’t be sticking around, you know. In Hawkins, I mean.”  

“Where else would I go?”

“Oh, come on. You know!” You exclaim, before humming a pitched version of California Dreamin’, that’s so off-tune, it would probably make your ears bleed if you’re hearing hadn’t been already severely damaged by Billy’s music earlier.

“What the hell was that?” Billy questions in between amused laughter once you’re finished, and you give him an incredulous look.

“You don’t like my outstanding performance of California Dreamin’?” you ask, feigning offense.

“Outstandingly deafening, maybe,” he states but this time there’s no real bite to his words; instead, there’s a certain playfulness in his tone, one that seems utterly foreign to you; and besides that, did you just make Billy Hargrove laugh?! 

Shaking your head, you try to tell yourself to focus on the road instead, so as not to get lost. After all, you don’t want to spend more time in Billy’s car than necessary, right?

“My parents place is just down this street.” You instruct after a few more moments of silent driving, and Billy nods.

“So, about tonight-“ Billy starts while parking the Camaro near the curb of the pavement in front of your house.

“What about it?” you interrupt, already suspecting where Billy is going with this.

“Are you just going to pretend that didn’t happen?” Billy inquires after you continue to stay quiet.

“Well, what do you want to do?” You question back, a slight edge to your voice.

“I don’t know, but don’t you think we should do something?”

Billy’s eyes search for yours, and you force yourself to deliberately look away. You don’t want to talk about this. You don’t want to think about this. In fact, the only thing you want right now is to fall into your comfy bed and forget that this night ever happened. 

“Right,” you taunt, “because there are so many options for us to choose from in terms of what we could do. We could go to the police and get called insane, we could go to the press and get called insane, we could-“

“Okay, okay, I get it.” Billy cuts you off, but you continue talking anyways.

“Listen, Hargrove, I’m gonna be frank: I don’t know what the fuck we saw in the woods just now. I’ve never seen something like it before and quite honestly, I don’t want to see such a being ever again – but that’s beside the point. If we tell people about what we saw, they’ll either think we were high as a kite, drunk of our asses, or both – or, they’ll think we just made it up, because it sounds that insane! A slimy looking creature with the face of an ugly, teethy flower; that seems more fitting for some B-side horror movie. So no, I don’t think that there’s anything we should do, because there isn’t anything we could do, unless you want to do what, actively seek it out again?”

Now it’s Billy’s turn to stay quiet as he contemplates your words.

There’s a car coming your way down the street, and its blinding headlights illuminate the inside of the Camaro for a brief moment – making you catch a clearer glimpse of Billy. The bruised cheek isn’t the only violent proof on his face of some previous altercation, you realize as you watch his tongue glide nervously over a busted part of his lower lip, before he suddenly speaks up again, “So, you don’t want to investigate what that was at all?”

“No,” you lie, though it’s not entirely untrue; for tonight you don’t want anything to do with it. How things will look tomorrow on the other hand, might be a completely different story, but Billy doesn’t need to know that. You decidedly follow up the half-truth with a more honest and quiet admission, “I just want to go to bed and sleep this off.”

There’s a weird tension in the car as you pick up your backpack – one that makes you want to leave and stay at the same time. It’s like you’ve said all there is to say, and yet there’s so much unsaid.

Before opening the door, you turn back to Billy once more.

“I’m just gonna keep out of the woods for now, and I would advise you to do the same – that’s pretty much all we can do, anyways.”

You pause for a moment, as your and Billy’s eyes meet one last time and there’s a weird intensity that makes you squirm in your seat, before quickly casting your eyes downwards again – trying to look anywhere but at the man with those infuriatingly piercing ocean eyes.

There’s another thing you need to say, you reckon. Something that’s been sitting on the tip of your tongue all night, ever since you two encountered that weird creature. Something that’s hard to fantom and even harder to articulate.

“Thank you, Hargrove.” You finally mumble out, voice hushed. Glancing back at Billy, you expect him to make a joke at your expense, but instead he just looks at you in surprise – blue eyes wide and eyebrows raised.

“For what?” His question comes out dumbfounded, and you fiddle with the leathery fabric of your car seat while elaborating. “Well, you know… for insisting that I’d get in your car, and for driving me home.”

You can’t quite read Billy’s follow-up expression, and you don’t want to think about it too much either, so instead you finally open the car door and step out.

“You’re welcome.” Billy grumbles, albeit rather softly.

“Well-“ still standing in between the space of the Camaro and its opened door, you look to the ground for some words to say – but you come up completely empty again.

“I should get going.” You nod your head towards your family’s house, that’s entirely left dark and unlit, safe for one single harsh streetlight, which illuminates the otherwise clear driveway.

“Yeah,” Billy states blankly, followed by a short pause, before suddenly wondering aloud, “Aren’t your parents’ home?”

You freeze in your current movement before shaking your head.

“No, they aren’t,” you acknowledge, and Billy shoots you a bewildered look.

“Didn’t you say you were visiting family?”

“Well, I am,” you carefully state, “if you’re considering my sister’s pet turtle Franklin family – which I do.”

“What?”

“My family is currently on holiday in Italy,” you clarify. “I’m just house sitting while they’re away, and looking after Franklin, of course.”

“Why wouldn’t you join them on their travels?”

The question slips out of Billy, before he can really think about it, and you just sigh.

“That’s a long story, and entirely none of your business.”

“Are you-“

“Tired? Yes, very! Good night, Hargrove!” You exclaim quickly, before finally slamming the car door shut. 

Whew! That’s done, you think to yourself in quiet relief – until Billy rolls his car window down once more, and you sigh.

“What is it, Hargrove?”

There’s a short pause, like Billy isn’t quite sure what he wanted to say either, before stating, “Nothing. I guess I’ll just see you around.”

“Yeah, I guess.” you repeat in a hushed whisper, and then Billy’s starting his car up again.

You watch him speed off into the night, as you simply stand there, underneath the cold and harsh lighting of a streetlamp, lost in thought and a weird feeling, that keeps growing in the pit of your stomach while the moon above you appears both bright yet so far away.

The more I thought about your latest write-up, the more curious I became about the mechanics behind the Prophet encounter. It sounds REALLY NEAT! Can you tell us more about its stats and/or how you ran it?

So I'm gonna be 100% honest, haha, and say that it was actually a reskin of a CR 26 monster (scaled down slightly) taken from a third party book I use called Tome of Titans. Honestly, I've had to lean a lot on 2CGaming's stuff because they're one of the few D&D publishing houses that 1) makes tier 3-4 content, 2) does incredibly fun stuff with encounter design and the design of 5e in general, and 3) goes extremely in-depth with their monsters, even giving you guidelines on how to run "easier" and "harder" variants of the same encounter (without changing the stats).

Would also strongly recommend their two bestiaries, Total Party Kill volumes 1 and 2. Just... dear god, read the warning at the front, you'll kill your party if you throw these monsters against them like you do vanilla baseline D&D monsters.

Anyway, the name of the original monster is Etteilla (pg 65). In the book, she's a supreme diviner -- a goddess of prophecy, which is why she's tarot-themed. I reskinned her in my game so that she was comprised of the seers of dusk elves past (Kjosev's mom is among them).

Mechanically, while you don't NEED a tarot deck, she operates off of the draws from the minor arcana (the book gives you a 'mythic' variant designed for level 20+ characters that also utilizes major). You can substitute this for a dice roll instead. Generally speaking, she has five types of actions she can do on her turn:

Attack with SWORDS

Create a barrier with PENTACLES

Heal with CUPS

Manipulate or copy a spell effect with WANDS.

At the start of her turn, you draw a card from the tarot. That card is considered the trump card for her entire round. Whatever card drawn empowers the actions she can take.

For instance, if the card drawn at the start of her turn is, say, a three of swords, that means all of her damage from her swords attack is doubled. If the card drawn is a page of pentacles, then the barrier becomes essentially 150 temp hp for herself. When she does her card throw, you draw 5 cards, and refer to a chart that tells you how much damage each of them deal. If any of them are in the suite of the trump card, they deal double damage.

(And yes, the turn where she dealt 383 damage in one round was when her swords was empowered).

The reason I drew her with cards in front of her face was so that my players would have a visual indicator of what the trump card was that turn, and could prepare for it accordingly.

If you do pick up the book and decide to run this fight, I would actually recommend adjusting her multiattack to say "Etteilla makes two attacks or makes one attack and takes one other action." Her swords baseline deals 64 (10d10+9) slashing damage per hit. When empowered, it's 119 (20d10+9) damage, and while granted, she is a CR26 encounter... if your players are not super optimized or have resistance to slashing damage it will fuck them lol. Kelogul got crit at the start of the encounter and took 183 damage from her attacks that round. He's a paladin with the toughness feat with 224 hp. I should have readjusted her abilities a touch at first but I missed it. Still, they beat it, at least!

Printer driver isolation improves the reliability of the Windows print service, by enabling printer drivers to run in processes that are separate from the process in which the print spooler runs.

Support for printer driver isolation is implemented in Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2 and later operating systems.

For Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, an inbox printer driver must support printer driver isolation and be able to run in an isolated process.

Previous versions of Windows

In previous versions of Windows, including Windows Server 2008, printer drivers always ran in the same process as the spooler. Printer driver components that ran in the spooler process included the following:

The failure of a single print driver component could cause the print subsystem to fail, halting print operations for all users and for all print components.

With Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, an administrator can, as an option, configure a printer driver to run in an isolated process--a process that is separate from the spooler process. By isolating the driver, the administrator can prevent a fault in a driver component from halting the print service.

Driver isolation support in INF files

By default, if the INF file that installs a printer driver does not indicate that the driver supports driver isolation, the printer class installer configures the driver to run in the spooler process. However, if the INF file indicates that the driver supports driver isolation, the installer configures the driver to run in an isolated process. An administrator can override these configuration settings and specify, for each driver, whether to run the driver in the spooler process or in an isolated process.

To support driver isolation, the INF file that installs a printer driver can use the DriverIsolation keyword to indicate whether the driver supports printer driver isolation. Setting DriverIsolation=2 indicates that the driver supports driver isolation. Setting DriverIsolation=0 indicates that the driver does not support driver isolation. Omitting the DriverIsolation keyword from the INF file has the same effect as setting DriverIsolation=0.

The following table shows the spooler functions that an administrator can use to configure the driver-isolation settings.

The first group loads the driver into the spooler processes. Each subsequent group loads the drivers in isolated processes per group. The second group is considered the 'shared' group in which other isolation-capable drivers are loaded by default.

Configuring driver isolation mode through administration

A computer administrator can use the Windows Print Management console or call the Windows spooler functions to configure the driver-isolation settings for each printer driver installed on a computer. The administrator configures the driver to use one of the settings listed in the following table.

Ideally, a printer driver is able to run in shared mode. That is, it runs in an isolated process shared with other printer drivers but separate from the spooler process. A driver might need to run in isolated mode if it can run in a process separate from the spooler process, but has difficulty sharing the process with other drivers. For example, a poorly designed driver might have file names that conflict with those of related drivers or of different versions of the same driver, or the driver might fault frequently or have a memory leak that interferes with the operation of other drivers that run in the same process.

To support troubleshooting, the domain administrator can disable the driver-isolation feature on a computer in the domain, or the administrator can force all of the printer drivers on the computer to run in isolated mode. In isolated mode, each driver must run in a process separate from the spooler and from the other printer drivers.

If driver isolation is disabled by group policy, the isolation is off for all printer drivers. If isolation is enabled, then the individual drivers are mode-checked. If a driver has isolation mode set, it runs in shared, isolated, or none mode, based on the registry entry. However, if the driver does not have isolation mode set and it is compatible with isolation, it runs in shared mode. If the driver is not compatible with the mode, the group policy override determines whether the driver runs in shared mode or none mode.

How to Make Espresso at Home: A Starter Guide

If you’re a coffee aficionado interested in pulling great shots at home, our review of the best espresso machine, grinder, and accessories can help you pick out a great beginner setup—but you’ll need a little practice and patience to get the hang of it. With that in mind, we enlisted David Castillo, the training and education manager at Joe Coffee Company in New York City (I also work at Joe Coffee Company as a consultant), to spend some time with the Breville Infuser (our top-pick machine), and give us some advice on getting started.

Though I have a long coffee background myself, including not just consulting at Joe Coffee Company but researching and writing Wirecutter’s guides to coffee grinders and drip coffee makers, and serving as associate editor at coffee news website Sprudge.com, I’ve spent nearly all of my time in the coffee industry on the drinking side of the bar. So I asked my colleague David if he might drop by my home testing lab and share his award-winning expertise using the beginner-friendly gear we recommend.

The bare minimum setup you’ll need to get started brewing espresso is the machine itself (which, in the case of the Breville Infuser, comes with a portafilter and tamper already) and, whether you do the grinding yourself or not, some coffee ground correctly for espresso (a much finer grind than you may be used to for filter coffee). Ideally you’ll grind coffee for each espresso right before you pull the shot, because coffee goes stale rapidly once it’s ground. And although picking out a coffee bean strictly marketed as “espresso” isn’t necessary, you’ll find that the best roasters strive to build coffee blends that taste balanced and pleasing in the espresso brewing process—as well as retain their best characteristics when served with milk.

For precision, it’s best to use a scale to confirm that you’re dosing each shot (that is, measuring out the coffee grounds) correctly—at least until you’re sure you’re doing the exact same steps the exact same way every time. At Joe Coffee Company in New York City, where United States Barista Champion finalist David Castillo directs the public education program, “Everything we teach first is by weight,” he told us.

For a double shot of espresso (about 2 ounces), a standard dose is between 13 and 18 grams of coffee. This also usually occurs when there is a momentum candle going the opposite direction or if several candles have been pushing price to reverse. These arrows serve as an early warning letting us know that the market might reverse trend.

The William 36 Histogram Waller Test Indicator

The William 36 Histogram Waller Test custom indicator is an oscillating indicator that also identifies trend direction. It is a bounded oscillating indicator that allows the histograms to be printed from -50 to +50. This indicator also has a marker on +/- 15 mark which allows traders to determine if the trend has actually started or if a candle has enough momentum to change the trend direction.

Trading Strategy Concept

This strategy aims to use the Yang Trader Main indicator as an early warning device, pointing which direction we should start looking for a trade. As soon as an arrow appears, we would get ready for a trade if the trend actually changes. This should be accompanied by price staying at the correct side of the modified moving average line and the moving average hooking towards the direction of the trend. If an arrow pointing up appears on the chart, that is a sign that the market might start to get bullish. Then, price should be staying above the modified moving average line and the moving average line should start sloping up. If on the other hand, an arrow pointing would appear, the reverse should also happen. Price should stay below the modified moving average line and the moving average line should slope down.

The change in trend should be confirmed by the William 36 Histogram Waller Test indicator. As price reverses, the histogram bars would start crossing over the midline. However, this doesn’t confirm the momentum of the change in trend. To confirm the change in trend, we would have to wait for the histogram bars to cross over the +/- 15 mark. If the trend is bullish, the histogram bar should cross above + 15, If the market is bearish, the histogram should cross below – 15. This would serve as our entry signal.

The stop loss would be placed either on the high or low of the entry candle. This would be a tight stop loss but since we are trading momentum setups, having an aggressive stop loss would be good. The take profit target would also be a conservative 1.5x the risk on the stop loss. This allows the trade to have a higher probability even with a tight stop loss.

Timeframe: 5-min, 15-min, 30-min, 1-hour, 4-hour and daily charts

Currency Pair: any major and minor pair plus some crosses that have enough volatility

Trading Session: any trading session if on the higher timeframe; lower timeframes should be on sessions with volume

Buy (Long) Trade Setup

Entry

The YangTraderMain indicator should print an arrow pointing up

The modified moving average line should start bending up

Price should stay above the modified moving average line

The William36WallerTest indicator should start printing positive histogram bars

Enter a buy order as soon as a histogram bar crosses above +15

Stop Loss

Set the stop loss a few pips below the low of the entry candle

Take Profit

Set the take profit target at 1.5x the risk on the stop loss

Sell (Short) Trade Setup

Entry

The YangTraderMain indicator should print an arrow pointing down

The modified moving average line should start bending down

Price should stay below the modified moving average line

The William36WallerTest indicator should start printing negative histogram bars

Enter a sell order as soon as a histogram bar crosses below -15

Stop Loss

Set the stop loss a few pips above the high of the entry candle

Take Profit

Set the take profit target at 1.5x the risk on the stop loss

Conclusion

This strategy is a momentum based strategy that makes use of the YangTraderMain indicator as the trend direction filter and the William36WallerTest indicator as the basis for the momentum entry. This strategy is not perfect, there will be some losing trades due to the tight stop loss. However, because of the fixed 1.5x reward-risk ratio, the strategy should allow for a positive outlook in the long run.

The key to this strategy is in catching the right trend with a strong momentum behind it.
