Poor Guide to Parenthood fanfic idea

DP x DC crossover fanfic idea which I decided to call "Poor Guide to Parenthood".

Danny and Jazz are distantly related to Oswald Cobblepot, otherwise known as Penguin. In their most desperate hour they go to him seeking sanctuary. Well, who’s he to say no to free PR, even if he didn’t read the memo of accepting the role of a caring father.

Jazz really deserved this vacation in Danny’s humble opinion. She’s done so much for him and this was the least he and uncle Os could do; an all-payed luxury spa weekend with the girls which included Harley, Ivy and Selina.

What could go wrong? Apparently a lot, nothing related to the girls but to the boys. Who knew that sending away the only person keeping a hyperactive teen with zero self-control on a leash and leaving said boy to the sole care of their mildly diabolical and eccentric adoptive father was a bad idea.

A good chunk of their mansion was missing with some of it’s iced over remnants embedded to the ground around the plot. Danny looked like he’d gotten to a fight with a fridge and Oswald wasn’t looking any better either. A distance away some of the goons could be seen dragging their half frozen brethren away from the site, he’ll have to apologize to them later. It was a miracle that none of the police or even the bats were there to question them about this mess. Really, all their were trying to do was to create a new ice machine for the Iceberg Lounge with the help of his ice core that wouldn’t run out of ice as fast nor would it melt as quickly, it would safe quite a bit of money and time too.

Now, Danny was intelligent but whatever he was smart was another question entirely. He knows how to make a fully operational hoverboard equipped with weapons any day of the week, but drop some cold hard common sense in front of him and it’d be like alien language to him. In summary: an intelligent man knows how to built a bomb, a wise man knows not to go and poke at it. And that wise man was be Jazz who was absent. Danny knew exactly what to do in this scenario.

“We’re not going to tell Jazz about this.”

Oswald, who has been quietly contemplating about his life choices for a while now finally opened his mouth “…We can pin this on Mr. Freeze.” Danny nodded sagely, clad to see they were on the same page on this one. Neither of them wanted to face the disappointed rage of the red head.

“All right, let’s start planting ‘evidence’ before the girls come back and she’ll never know a thing!” Danny said as he clapped his hands, only to stop when they both heard a very distinctive voice they both didn’t want to hear at that moment.

“You so sure about that dear little brother?” Since the jig was up both Danny and Oswald turned around to face the music. Behind very disapproving Jazz stood Harley, Ivy and Selina with various degrees of amusement. She gave the boys a hard glare “Want to try that again?”

The two glanced at each other for something before Danny nervously started “Ummm… How was your weekend ladies?”

Octomer Baby Development: A guide for new parents (Part 1)

Parenthood can be as fulfilling as it is challenging, and for new parents, this may seem like a daunting task to make. But with the help of this handbook, you will be walked over all there is to know about the newest member of your family and how to take care of them.

PHASE 1—THE EGG:

0-2 months:

The egg has just been laid. Roughly about the size of a bead. Though coloring may vary, most octomer eggs look transluscent with a bright colored center, in which the embryo is located.

Unlike octopuses, octomers only lay one or two viable eggs per mating cycle. This greatly increases their life expectancy as their digestive system no longer shuts down inlieu of producing viable eggs. Octomer eggs, like most marine life eggs, are extremely fragile and squishy. Parents often create a small nest out of weaved kelp, sea cucumbers, and soft live coral. These are not only meant to cushion the egg, but the toxic tendrils of the live coral help protect their precious offspting from predators.

Another difference to Otopus eggs, is their shspes. Since Octomer eggs aren't hung on the ceiling of an underwater cave, they lack that telltale teardrop shape most octopus eggs are known for, instead taking a more spherical form.

3-5 Months:

On this stage, the egg is about the size of a ping pong ball. Eyes and a mouth start to look visible and the embryo's body starts to develop the octomer's signature 8 arms. Though poor, their sight and hearing will develop and the embryo will start reacting to sounds and light. It is recommended parents start talking to the egg to incentivize development.

It is common for octomer parents to carry their egg around in small pouches or bags so the embryo can be stimulated by outside sounds and light fluctuations at different sea levels.

5-7 months:

Most of the octomer's body is fully developed at this point and sex can be determined by the lack or prescence of a hectocotylus. The outer membrane of the egg also starts to lose color and become more fragile as the embryo absorbs more nutrients. The egg is about the size of a billiard.

At this point, it is not recommended to move the egg, as it could possibly harm the delicate shell and cause premature hatching.

7-9 months:

After absorbing all the nutrients from the egg, the octomer baby is expected to pip and hatch around this time. The outer layer is expected to be completely transluscent as all nutrients have been absorbed, and instead all coloration has been transfered to the newly hatched baby.

At this stage, their chromatophores aren't fully developed, and as such, most octomers at this stage only have light pale coloration alongside freckles or marks reminiscent of their specific species. Octomer babies have also not developed the ability to create water jets, and due to their small size— around the size of a baseball— can be swept by ocean currents. This is why, most octomer babies will be constantly in the care of their parents up until they've reached 24 inches or 61.4 cms in size.

Hi Maddy!! I hope you're having a good day. I wanted to request something for parenthood, but not really parenthood. Shin and Akiko, being the children they are, ask a bunch of random questions to their Kaasan Shinobu before actually bringing up a question she can answer: How her and Y/n met. I was curious about that because it gets brought up often. Then, in a flashbacky sort of way, Shinobu recalls how her and her wife met. I hope this request is good! Thank you!

Parenthood Prt5: First Encounter

Shinobu Kochou x She/Her Reader

A/N: Prt4 I finally managed to finish something! Warning: Brief mention of drinking underage. Thanks for reading, hope you enjoy! Word Count: 3,193

Shinobu inhaled deeply through her nose, stretching and switching from laying on her left side to her right, pleased to find that Yn was still in bed too when her arm draped across the other woman’s torso. She shuffled a little closer, a contented sigh leaving her lips when her lips found her wife’s nape. She wished every morning could be so peaceful. Usually it was them struggling to get the kids ready for school and then booking it to their respective jobs, but today, they were both off and could enjoy the simple pleasures of a lazy Sunday.

Oh how naïve a thought.

“Hmm? What was that sweetie?” Yn mumbled tiredly, slowly bringing herself into a more wakeful state.

“I didn’t say anything, dear. Go back to sleep.” Shinobu spoke in a similar tone, eyes still glued shut. She wanted to milk this moment of peace for all it was worth.

“I frew up.” A water-y voice that Shinobu recognized as Shin spoke up for apparently the second time.

Ah… well… easy come, easy go.

“Oh, honey,” Yn started to get up and Shinobu mourned the escaping warmth as if the sun itself was packing its bags and leaving their solar system, “Go to the bathroom, let’s get you cleaned up.”

Shinobu heard the shower get turned on and turned to lay flat on her back, glaring up at the ceiling as if it was the reason her son was sick. She did that for a minute or two, braving herself to leave the comfort of her bed to gather up Shin’s bedding and whatever else hadn’t survived his spew.

She shuffled into the bathroom briefly to take Shin’s pajamas and leave fresh ones on the counter, cooing at her poor boy in the tub and stroking his hair briefly before chastely kissing the crown of Yn’s head, then continuing her disinfecting journey.

As she finished wiping Shin’s floor clean, she heard a cough from Akiko’s room and Shinobu’s shoulders slumped. She softly knocked on the butterfly decorated door.

“Bee, are you awake? Can I come in?”

“Kaasan…” Akiko whined from inside, another barking cough nearly shaking the door off of its hinges with its intensity.

Shinobu entered the room without hesitation, brushing Akiko’s sweaty bangs back and frowning over the temperature of her skin.

“My throat and head hurt.” Akiko whimpered.

“I’m sorry, Bee. That’s no fun… your brother isn’t feeling well either. It must be that nasty flu that’s been making rounds through the school. Can you get up for me? I want you to rinse off after your brother.”

Akiko pouted, but nodded, slowly getting out of bed. Shinobu guided her to the bathroom just as Yn was carrying Shin out.

“Oh, poor baby, not you too.” Yn frowned, caressing Akiko’s head gently as they crossed paths. She looked to Shinobu, “I’m taking Shin to our bed. I’ll collect all of Akiko’s laundry while you help her.”

“Sounds good. Could you also start boiling some water for tea? I don’t know about Shin, but Akiko could use some honey lemon.”

“On it.”

Working like a well-oiled machine, it wasn’t long before both children were clean and snug in their parents’ bed, medicated and the bedside table cluttered with tissues, ice water and tea, music playing softly from Yn’s phone.

They made sure comfortable and prepared to leave the room to get themselves clean when their children began pleading for them to stay, meekly demanding a story in their sickly states.

“You two should really try to sleep.” Shinobu said, earning more weak sounds of displeasure.

“They’ll probably fall asleep before you even finish a story. “ Yn reasoned. “What story do you two want to hear?”

“A new story.” Shin mumbled.

“Yeah.” Akiko agreed.

“About what?” Shinobu groaned tiredly as she moved to sit with Yn in the recliner that had been moved closer to the edge of the bed.

The children hemmed and hawed, trying to think of a topic that they would both be interested in, somehow finally landing on the topic of how their parents met.

“Really, that’s the story you want?” Shinobu asked, “Not something with dragons or mermaids?”

The children shake their heads, minds made up.

“…but if you could work in a dragon somewhere in there, I’d like that.” Akiko rasped. Yn helped her sip some more tea.

“I got to say, I’d like to hear the story from your perspective too.” Yn smiled, returning to sit beside Shinobu.

“Very well…” Shinobu thought back, trying to decide where to start, of course she would tell the children a more edited version, but she could remember that night as if it had been yesterday. She smiled to herself as the events replayed in her mind.

Shinobu rolled her eyes, nursing her mug of cheap beer as her fellow pre-med classmates made absolute fools of themselves. Singing, dancing and stumbling around the bar. She wasn’t sure why she bothered tagging along. She would have much rather spent tonight in her apartment eating takeout on the couch while making disparaging remarks about whatever dumb drama Giyuu would be watching and then sleep for approximately five hundred years after the stress of finals week finally passed.

But no, she decided to be social. At least one of her project groupmates was spotting for the first round and a couple of appetizers. Shinobu figured she could slip away in another twenty minutes or so, then she could enjoy her winter break in earnest.

Her gaze slowly scanned the bar, she wouldn’t even really call it people watching, as she hadn’t a thought in her head that wasn’t about a hot bath or a cozy bed. However, somehow through the chaos and clamor of tipsy college students, she heard a sharp sound of someone distinctly not having a good time. Curious, she peered over a couple of her obnoxiously singing table mates towards the bathrooms.

There she saw two people a young woman glowering up at a man who was blocking her from leaving the narrow passage. Shinobu couldn’t make out what they were talking about, but she knew she didn’t like the looks of what was going on there.

She slid out of the booth and walked over.

“There you are, come on,” Shinobu nudged ahead of the man, holding her hand out to the other woman, “let’s get back to our table.”

The relief that washed over the woman’s face as she quickly latched onto Shinobu’s hand made her blood boil. Some people just can’t take ‘no’ as an answer, could they?

Shinobu began guiding the woman away, but didn’t make it far before the man fell into step beside the woman, almost overtaking them and making their gait more clumsy since he was partially walking just ahead of the young woman.

“We were talking, actually.” The man said, annoyance clear in his tone.

“Not anymore, you aren’t.” Shinobu drawled, maneuvering the woman so she could stand between her and the man. Her nose wrinkled, as the scent of booze seemed to roll off of him like he showered in tequila and beer, “You know, it’s extremely pathetic that a guy who is in his mid-thirties at the very least has nothing better to do than to get drunk and harass college girls.”

The man froze, not because Shinobu’s words gave him a sudden eye-opening epiphany, but because he simply could not fathom being talked back to. That, and he was so drunk everything seemed to go in slow motion and his brain needed a minute to catch up.

Shinobu figured that would be that, and she continued guiding the other woman back to her booth, safety in numbers and all that, but she hadn’t expected the man to be so brazen stupid. Well, she could have guessed, but still, the audacity was appalling.

“Ah!”

Shinobu felt the woman’s hand get tugged away from her own and she quickly swiveled back around to find the woman struggling to push the man away from her. He grasped her wrists and started pulling her towards the entrance of the bar.

Now, this commotion had begun to earn the attention of the staff, as well as the other patrons of the bar and even the most tipsy could see that something wasn’t right there. There was absolutely no way that man was going to make it one step out the door without a mob right behind him.

However, Shinobu would be remiss if she wasn’t the one who gave the man what he had coming to him. She grabbed him by the back of his jacket, bunching up the fabric in her tightly clenched fist. Her winter boots slid across the slushy snow gathered at the bar entrance as the oblivious man lumbered along.

Shinobu gritted her teeth together and glared daggers into the back of the man’s head, the little vein on her forehead clearly visible as she yanked on the man’s jacket with all of her might.

“Hey!” She she spoke sharply, pulling again.

Between just coming off of the stress of finals, to forcing herself to go socialize despite her exhaustion, to now having to deal with this entitled prick was making her blood boil.

Then the young woman yelped in pain as the man attempted to shove her through the front door, but missed and half shoved her against the doorframe. That sound broke Shinobu’s heart and fueled the flames of her anger to even greater heights. She hadn’t beaten up anyone since middle school, but surely Kanae would let this one slide.

She pivoted in the slush, slipping beneath the man’s outstretched arm, facing him with focused and calculating eyes. She pulled her arm back, then thrusting forward with her palm.

“Huwah!” The man hunched over, letting go of the woman to grasp at his stomach once Shinobu’s strike found home in his soft belly.

She wasn’t done there though, oh no. Hunching over like that, how could she resist? She grabbed him by the hair, shivering in displeasure at how greasy it was. Yet she still yanked his head back, giving herself a clear path for her fist to meet his nose.

A chorus of ‘oh!’s and laughter overtook the bar as the sickening crack of the man’s nose breaking against Shinobu’s fist was heard. She hadn’t really planned to break the man’s nose with that lunch, but she certainly had no issue with it. The man wailed and dropped to his knees and his hands shot up to his face.

“You bitch! I’ll— I’ll get you for this!“

Shinobu scoffed at the audacity. A broken nose wasn’t enough, she supposed, but that was okay, she could keep this up all night. She brought one foot back, preparing to send the man off with a perfectly placed kick, but then she was grabbed by the elbow and pulled out onto the cold, slushy sidewalk.

“Ah! Go, go, go!”

“What?”

Shinobu was baffled, to surprised to do anything but let the woman excitedly push her out of the bar and jog down the block and around the corner. Their breath rose in the cold air and dissipated beneath the street lights while they took a moment to catch their breath.

“Oh my god, that was so scary!” The woman sighed, bracing her hands on her knees. “No one is following right?”

“Um,” Shinobu peeked around the corner, finding the street empty, “no.”

“Oh thank god.”

Shinobu shook her head, “Why did you do that? I had him, and the whole bar was on our side.” She took the woman’s hand and started to walk back towards the bar.

“W-wait!” The woman resisted, “Where are we going?”

“Back to the bar.” Shinobu said. “I imagine the police will get involved and we should be there to give statements to make sure that bastard gets the worst punishment that he can.”

“I can’t do that.”

“Why the hell not?”

The young woman took a deep breath and looked at the ground, meekly skimming the toe of her boot in the slush, seemingly flustered.

“Well… because I wasn’t supposed to be in there in the first place. I’m not twenty yet.”

“You dumbass.” Shinobu shot back, making the other woman flinch a bit.

“H-hey! I’m turning twenty this year so it’s not like it’s that bad. I just wanted to have one drink to celebrate the end of the semester with my friends and then go home, is that a crime?”

“When you’re under the legal drinking age, yes.” Shinobu said snidely, then shivered, her coat was still inside the bar.

“Oh no, you’re cold!” She started taking off her own coat and handed it to Shinobu, “Here, that creep didn’t even give me enough time to take my coat off before he started harassing me.”

“I’m fine, keep it.”

“No, no, you can borrow it. After all of that, the cold air is very refreshing.”

Shinobu sighed and took the offered coat, wrapping it around her shoulders. It was warm and soft on the inside and smelled quite nice…

“Thanks.”

“No, thank you.” She stressed, “You were amazing back there. How did you learn to fight like that?”

“I took aikido classes when I was younger. The only club I was ever kicked out of.”

“You got kicked out?” The woman chuckled, looking at Shinobu curiously.

“Yes, the way I chose to implement it in other settings did not make the Sensei very happy.” Shinobu smirked.

“Ah, so you’ve always had a strong sense of justice, huh?” She spoke softly and smiled warmly, making Shinobu’s heart stutter a bit in her chest, it hadn’t done so in awhile now. She looked up at the streetlight and put her hands in the pockets of the coat, pleased to find the lining of the pockets to be just as soft and warm.

“I suppose you could say that.”

“I’m Yn, by the way. Yn Ln, or uh, Ln Yn or whatever.”

“Kochou Shinobu.” She answered by supplying her own name.

“Nice to meet you and um, sorry for bringing you stress.”

“You have nothing to apologize for. Besides, it was rather cathartic in all honesty.”

“Haha, yeah? Well that’s a relief I guess.”

The little laugh made Shinobu smile a little wider. They talked more, sitting down on a nearby bench. They talked about their studies, families, interests, and more. When Yn began to shiver, Shinobu put the coat back over her shoulders while still telling a story about her sisters. Time seemed to be at a standstill until Yn’s phone started to ring.

“Oh, sorry,” She gave Shinobu an apologetic look and answered her phone.

“No problem.” Shinobu assured. She exhaled in amusement as a bunch of loud voices came through on the other side.

She could make out bits and pieces of the concerned friends’ dialogue. They were making sure Yn was alright and sobbing about how scary that whole situation had been. The designated driver struggled to take the phone away at some point to finally get to the bud of the issue and Shinobu heard him ask where Yn was so they could pick her up and get everyone home. He was clearly stressed. It was no easy task to get the tipsy group members with Yn’s number to finally call her and not push the wrong buttons or get distracted.

Shinobu was having a good time, so hearing that it would soon be over left her feeling a little antsy. So before Yn could tell the guy she was literally just around the corner, Shinobu blurted,

“Hey, um, we’ve been out here for awhile. How does a nice hot bowl of ramen? There’s a really good place not to far from here.” Her voice was as even-keeled and confident sounding as ever, but inside she felt some jitters.

“That… that sounds really good right now actually. I’d love too.”

Shinobu thought briefly to make sure to extend the invitation to Yn’s friends, but she was already filling them in on the plan and hanging up on them.

“We should probably go back to the bar first anyway so you can get your coat back, huh?” She asked.

“It’s fine. I think we’ve had enough of that place. I have my phone and wallet, I’ll just text one of my classmates to take it with them and I’ll get it back from them later.”

“Are you sure that’s okay?”

“Of course.” Shinobu stood up from the bench and waited for Yn to do the same. “I mean, as long as you don’t mind sharing yours again if it gets too chilly.”

“That’s totally fine! I don’t mind at all.” Yn shot up to her feet, looking forward to spending more time with Shinobu. Hopefully she would have the courage to ask Shinobu for her phone number afterward.

Shinobu smiled and decided to be a little more bold and offered her hand.

“Then let’s go. Careful, it’s a little slippery out here.”

Yn took the offered hand and left her face warm, she’d be relinquishing her coat again in no time if Shinobu kept being so sweet.

“And people say chivalry is dead. You’re a regular knight.”

“I try.” Shinobu said almost smugly, gently pulling Yn along. “Come on, it’s this way.”

She had started out the night not wanting to go out, now she found herself looking for excuses to drag the night out as long as she could. She had a good feeling that Yn felt the same when her coat found its way over Shinobu’s shoulders again. It looked like she wasn’t the only one who could be chivalrous.

“And so then the dragon told us to climb onto his back and he took us to the ramen shop. Best ramen we have ever eaten until this very day. Isn’t that right, dear?” Shinobu finished her abridged retelling, turning her head to look down adoringly at her wife, only to find her sleeping against her shoulder.

“Rude.” Shinobu scoffed. “Did the early beginnings of our relationship bore you that much?” She turned her attention to the bed next, finding Akiko asleep as well and she sighed. “No one made it to the end?”

“I did Kaasan.” Shin whispered, trying hard to keep his eyes open. “I liked it. It was a good story.”

“Thank you, sweetheart. Do you need anything my sweet boy?”

He shook his head.

“Then sleep well, I’ll be right here if you need me.“

“Okay… g’night.”

Shinobu smiled and reached for the curtain behind her, pulling it over to block the sun from the window.

“Good night.”

Shinobu pulled up the footrest of the recliner she and Yn shared and got more comfortable. She closed her eyes and snuggled closer to her wife. It wasn’t quite the same as it has been earlier that morning, but she treasured every moment they could be together. Yn shifted in her sleep, covering Shinobu with more of her body, making her smile peacefully and hold her closer as she drifted off to sleep like the rest of her family.

What did I do right (to be with you right now)

A/N: I was struck by dad!Poe feels a few days ago on Discord and then this happened, so this is me being soft af about Poe being a great dad and a sweet wonderful husband. Title comes from "Favorite T-Shirt" by Jake Scott.

Pairing: Poe Dameron x reader (no pronouns, but reader is pregnant)

Every single day, Poe confirmed that Kes Dameron was an exact replica of him. It was obvious to anyone's eyes, with matching curls and the same deep beautiful eyes, and when it came to the inside there was no doubt: Kes Dameron is just like his dad, with a big heart and a mind too full of thoughts.

You hadn’t been feeling well, a 5-month-old pregnancy being at fault, and poor little Kes got too worried when he saw his mom leaving the room to go lay down and his dad following behind to make sure you were alright. Kes followed close too, looking at Poe helping you get comfortable before meeting Kes outside your bedroom.

It took Poe one look at Kes to know exactly what was going through his mind. Poe held his hand as they both walked outside to the back of the house, he needed a distraction, and considering his and his son's head worked the same way, he knew just the right thing to do.

“Is mommy okay?” Kes’s little voice asked as they came to a halt, full of concern that reached up to his eyes wide open looking up at his dad. You were okay, more than okay, you were just very much pregnant. The second trimester had hit hard and fast, with waves of dizziness and leg cramps coming out of nowhere that left you down and resting for most parts of the day. To the eyes of a 3-year-old boy, without a doubt, it was a sight worth worrying about.

“Oh, bud. Don’t worry,” Poe kneeled down to his height, meeting Kes eye to eye. “Mommy is alright, but making a baby makes mommy feel sick sometimes.”

“How can we help mommy?” This kid, Poe could see once again, was too much like him: a man of action ready to help.

“We can help mommy by letting her rest, ‘kay?” Poe did his best to try and calm him down. Kes nodded, not quite convinced, but smiling when his dad did it too. “Now come on, let’s climb up.” Poe signaled his head up to his old x-wing, his beloved Black One, now resting in all her retired glory.

“Inside?!” Kes asked with excited eyes.

“Well, you are a big brother now, big brothers need to learn how to fly.” The way Kes’s eyes lit up almost made Poe tear up, his heart swelling with pride. “Come on, up we go.” With a grunt, Poe lifted Kes and placed him inside of the X-Wing. He hopped on after, placing Kes on his lap and reaching for the helmet that rested on the dashboard. It was way too big for Kes’s head, and when Poe placed it there the protective gear hung to the side of his little head.

“Dad! I can’t see anything!” Both of them laughed when Kes turned, the helmet covering half of his face.

“I’m sorry, Commander,” Poe apologized with a fake serious tone that only made both of them laugh more as Poe arranged the helmet so the little boy could see. “Pilots need their helmets while flying.”

“‘m not a commander.” Kes’s hands stuck to his sides, eyes analyzing everything in front of him.

“What do you mean? Kes Dameron is the best pilot in the galaxy.” They shared another laugh before Poe signaled to the front. “Alright, bud, why don’t you press that button over there…” Poe pointed to one of the power buttons, which Kes pressed with unsure chubby fingers while Poe lifted one of the engine levers. The motor started roaring then, and Poe’s stomach fluttered with long-forgotten electricity now also mixed with joy as his kid’s animated laughter filled the cockpit. “There you go! Now, let’s lift it a little bit, ready?”

When Poe grabbed the lever in between their legs, he guided both of Kes’s small hands around his own. He began lifting the ship, just a few feet above the ground, enough for Kes to feel it. “We are flying!” Just the feeling of hovering made the little boy erupt in excited giggles, Poe could never get tired of that sound.

“Yes, daddy!” His voice was as firm as his father’s, just a tiny bit more high-pitched. They landed the ship with matching smiles and looked at each other. Sometimes, in moments like this, when Poe looked at his life he could not believe how lucky he was.

“That was a very successful mission, Commander, congratulations bud!”

“Again!” Kes couldn’t stop his excitement, no matter how hard he tried.

“Oh, no…” Poe laughed, he was creating a monster. “Maybe some other time. Now let’s go back inside-”

“No! No daddy, please! I want to stay here.” You were definitely going to kill him.

They stayed there, going through every button and trigger, what each one did and how everything worked; they shot the bad guys and Poe told stories about far away planets and being among the stars until, eventually, Kes ended up falling asleep with the helmet on and a smile on his face; that smile brought Poe a comfort different to the one that his ship had always given to him, one that came with peace and home and his beautiful family. So much peace, that maybe he could close his eyes for a little while and take it all in.

That’s how you find your two boys after a while - after the amount of quietness in the house became too much quiet -. The two of them rested calmly inside the X-Wing, a sight you hadn’t seen in so long, one that took you years back to when you were fighting a war. Your stomach fluttered, this time not with nausea, but with so much love you could maybe start crying. 

Your hand reached up to Poe’s curls, much shorter now than they were back then, little streaks of grey appearing on some of the tips and roots, but he looked handsome as ever, as he did the day you met him. “Poe,” you whispered when he grunted, his way of showing he was awake. “Hi.”

“Hey.” He whispered back, following your eyes to look at the still-sleeping toddler on his lap. “Are you feeling better?” Your nod made Poe let out a happy sigh. “Kes was getting nervous about you feeling sick, that’s why we came here.”

“Oh, my little boy.” You expressed fondly, your hand resting on top of the helmet. “So you fixed it the only way you knew how.”

“It used to work for me.” Your eyes met with a silent nostalgia on them, with thousands of memories of finding each other in that same spot before battles, after losses, or when you just needed a moment of quiet.

“It worked for him too.” With careful hands you removed the helmet, letting Kes’s head rest more comfortably on Poe’s chest. “Flying never fails, does it?” A guilty smile played on Poe’s lips, one too inviting not to kiss away.

“I thought you wouldn’t hear,” Poe confessed against your lips.

“An X-Wing engine?” You kissed him again, trying to suppress your laugh like that. Poe apologized, an apology that you took with a smile as you played with Kes’s curls. “Did he like it?”

“I’m surprised you didn’t hear his excitement.” He joked, making both of you laugh. “I’m afraid you are going to have to deal with pilots for a little while more.” Poe stretched his neck to kiss you again, not missing the way you smiled and sighed under his touch.

“I wouldn’t have it any other way.” As if on cue Kes began stretching then, lifting his arms to shake away the sleep. “Good morning, Captain Dameron.” You pushed back his curls, welcoming him with soothing motions. “Let’s go back inside and have a snack, how does that sound?”

Kes nodded as he blinked awake, meeting your face with a tiny smile. “Yeah, but I’m a Commander, mommy!” Kes corrected you, just another confirmation that Kes was definitely his father’s son. 

It goes unspoken as both you and Poe laugh and meet each other’s eyes, but after the years you went through together, you often wondered what did you do right to be right there, right now.

leona always finds himself fast asleep, only to be tackled by his children in which he then has to play fight with in order to get them to settle down. as annoyed as he seems, he doesn’t mind as much as one would think. he just enjoys being able to play around with his kids. now suddenly, his nap is now ruined but at least his kids will fall asleep almost immediately due to how tired out they are.

leona tells his children that they can’t have a certain thing, whether it be a sweet or some kind of toy, but the moment they start to plead with him, he’ll break. with a big long sigh and his hands on his hips, he says one word “fine,” and his kids grinned widely, thanking their dad. it’s easy to win him over, that’s why he’s their main target. 

if leona’s children are scared, he recounts stories, most exaggerated, of his strength and abilities. reminding them that they shouldn’t be scared because they have a strong beastman father who will protect them even when they’re well into their adulthood. 

for all leona’s children, he says, “no dating until you’re 25.” although it started as just a joke, as his kids got older he started to fear them growing up, but he would knew he wouldn’t be able to stop them so he would have to find a way to live with it. he vets every one of his kids significant others which annoy them to no end.

ace’s poor children cannot tell their dad anything unless they want him to go around, shouting it to the masses. whether it be a good grade, their crush, or an embarrassing story from when they were a toddler, ace will tell anyone who will listen. he adores bragging about his children and how amazing they are to any poor soul who decides to give him the time of day (their mistake).

ace is also the kind of dad to show embarrassing pictures of his child to their crush. despite their children’s protests, ace insists that they were just so adorable, their crush must see. however ace knows exactly what he’s doing and takes pride in making his kid’s face go bright red. 

ace doesn’t like arguing with his kids. even though he has no problem confronting others, it pains him to quarrel with his own children. so, he tries to avoid it the best he can and when a disagreement comes up, he tries his best to understand his children’s perspective. he wants them to know that although he may be the adult, their feelings and opinions still matter to him.

when asked by his children to do something, ace immediately drops everything to help them. all it takes is a simple, “hey dad, i need to make something for a science project,” and he’s on it. when the teachers ask if they had any help, his children will be sure to say no.

jade always makes sure his children eat well. he notices the little things about his kids, what they dislike, what they enjoy, their favourites, and try to cater meals to each of them. though it may seem like he’s spoiling them, making food that his children like is the least he can do to keep them healthy and happy. 

jade will sit beside his children for as long as it takes to help them with their homework or a school project. he won’t give away the answers nor will he very obviously hint at the correct solution, instead he tries his best to guide them. if his child gets frustrated with their work, jade will help calm them down before resuming. 

spontaneously, jade brings his children on drive, typically late at night to random places. sometimes, he’ll plan it out, although it’s almost never planned. wherever they end up, jade will gets his kids something, usually a snack. when it’s a late night drive, by the time he gets home, they’re already all asleep in the back of his car.

jade teases hims children to no end in his own unique way. sometimes, it catches others off guard because they aren’t sure whether or not he’s being serious, however his children know their dad very well and can’t say they’re impressed with his teasing. it’s practically impossible for them to go a day without being teased by him.

I still think it's funny you guys love this fic so much. Especially the version I posted when there are six existing variations of how all this went down.

I think my favourite aspect is writing how fatherhood has shaped everyone - as a fandom, there's a lot of discourse on womanhood, feminism, and motherhood because of how emphasized it is in the books, but I haven't seen a lot on fatherhood outside of Carlisle, and Carlisle and Edward's relationship (doesn't mean it isn't out there, it just hasn't come across my dash). But I could waffle on about that for ages; I won't.

I live for the little moments like Jasper getting to introduce Ollie to Peter and Charlotte, and Peter kind of gets this moment of ... closure, almost? That after every single thing that Jasper has gone through and deals with, he's here with a girl who loves him, and their son. And Jasper might be terrified of fucking parenthood up or that Ollie might get sick or hurt, but he's also so, so happy.

Or Alice mathematically working out where Jasper can stand at the local fair so that he can watch Ollie ride a pony for the first time without scaring the poor animal to death because that's one of the memories that Jasper's managed to hold onto all this time - the joy he had around horses when he was a child, and learning to ride.

And then there's all the drama and bullshit - the Volturi, Maria just being extra, Whatever The Fuck Alice and Cynthia's Mother is up to, Ollie having to pretend Alice and Jasper are his cousins when he's too old to look like their son. But that's what makes the happy moments more special.

If we assume that the two nomadic groups brought to Pern were of equal size, then we lost over 360 people when the Tuareg were wiped out (which, still, for fuck’s sake Anne), with how many depending on how many children they had and if they had people marrying in and joining them
