Steddie Week Day 4:
Familiar / Hurt/Comfort / Here Come the Tears by Judas Priest
Eddie and Steve had never been close before the world went to hell. They’d known of each other, as everyone knows everyone in small town, middle America. They’d gone to the same school, smoked behind the same abandoned buildings and knew all the best places to make the worst decisions, but they hadn’t done it together. They were disparate figures, drifting around each other’s edges. That all changed in 1986 when through fate or chance the two boys had been flung together.
By the summer of 1988, they’d grown into and around each other like vines beneath forest foliage. They’d become inseparable, familiar. Steve showed up outside the garage at closing time, the Beamer tearing down the gravel path, leaving a trail of dust in its wake. When Robin and the kids weren’t around, Steve drove fast, throwing caution to the wind. No one else knew that about him. Eddie did.
He didn’t know what to do with all of the pieces of Steve that were uniquely his. He felt the illogical urge to write them down, catalogue each one as though designing a character for a new campaign. He wanted a record of each minute detail of Steve.
“Your yuppie boyfriend’s tearin’ up the drive again, Manson,” Eddie's boss, Frankie, hollered from his spot behind the service desk.
In the year he’d worked at the garage, he’d never seen the guy move from behind his desk, yet his hands were always grease-stained. Eddie hated his boss, but the job paid well enough. He was saving up to high tail it out of Hawkins, where nicknames like ‘The Freak’, and Frankie’s newest addition ‘Manson’, as in that Manson, the one with the cult in the 60s, weren’t so widespread.
“I was off twenty minutes ago, Frankenstein. You want him to stop kickin’ up dust you could just let me off on time,” Eddie grumbled, grabbing a spare rag and trying to scrub the worst of the grease and engine gunk from his hands and overalls.
“You think that carburettor was going to replace itself? You wanna finish on time? Work faster,” Frankie noted, punctuating his point by kicking his feet across the desk. Charming.
Eddie made his way to the car, drummed his knuckles against the passenger door and waited as Steve leaned over to push it open, his precious seats covered haphazardly with one of Eddie’s ruined bandannas. This was their habit, how the two worked. Steve was wearing sunglasses, which usually meant he was fighting off a migraine. They’d been more frequent in recent months. Eddie blamed the hot weather.
“How was your day?” Steve asked, starting the car.
Eddie flopped into the passenger seat and groaned. He let his body lay slack and boneless as the leather seats cradled him and the cool air from the A.C. took his breath away.
“That good, huh?”
“Everyone’s cars decided to break down on the hottest day of the year and Frankenstein’s still giving me shit about being a cult leader. I think the dude used to hold out hope for you since you were the town's golden boy, but now he thinks there’s some kind of Stepford wife thing going on.”
Steve snorted as he turned onto the familiar street leading to The Harringtons’ house.
“I saw Dustin today. The kid wanted me to remind you, you’re picking the twerps up on Monday,” Steve informed, drumming his fingers against the steering wheel. The guy had no sense of rhythm, but Eddie never had the heart to tell him.
“Remind me why you can’t,” Eddie muttered as Steve’s house came into view.
“Because I work late and you get off by two.”
“I thought you said my van was a ‘death trap’. I could always take your car,” Eddie proposed with a devilish smirk.
That car was Steve’s baby. Not even he was allowed to drive it, save that one night in Indianapolis when Steve was drunk and Robin broke her wrist. They’d spent five hours together in the emergency room. It’d brought back all the wrong kind of memories for Steve and Eddie could tell.
Steve and Eddie talked about everything except Eddie’s stay in hospital and defining the liminal space between platonic and romantic, their relationship had been drifting for the past six months.
“In your dreams, Munson. You staying at mine tonight?” Steve asked, pulling up and walking around to open Eddie’s door for him.
He always made excuses about Eddie getting engine oil all over the passenger door, but he thought Steve liked playing chivalrous in the same way he liked playing up his less-than-stellar reputation.
Steve kept asking him to spend the night. Eddie had his own drawer in Steve’s room. He couldn’t help but feel like he was asking him to move in. Eddie kept turning him down, not because he didn’t want to, but because he didn’t want to spend the rest of his life in Hawkins, even if it was with Steve. He’d tried to convince himself he’d be able to do it, so they could get out of their goddamn stalemate and get on with the rest of their lives. Yet, Hawkins had always been inhospitable for the likes of people like him and the person Steve was becoming.
“If you’re cookin,” Eddie agreed, unbuttoning his overalls.
By the time Steve found his keys, Eddie had managed to strip the sweat-slicked clothes from his body and dumped them unceremoniously on the front stoop. The good thing about rich people’s houses? No neighbours for miles.
They followed the same old routines. Eddie made his way upstairs to shower while Steve started prepping for dinner. Once Eddie didn’t smell like the inside of a boys' locker room, he returned to find Steve spaced out in the kitchen.
Eddie’s heart was a hummingbird in flight. Steve’s body was stock still, his eyes a thousand miles away.
“Steve,” Eddie breathed, signalling his approach.
He tried to focus on the kitchen. This wasn’t two years ago. Vecna was dead.
He laced his fingers into the crook of Steve’s elbow and finally caught the boy’s attention, the pot on the stove having boiled dry.
“Migraine?” Eddie asked as Steve’s eyes snapped shut, frown lines marring the landscape of his forehead.
“Yeah,” Steve confirmed through gritted teeth as Eddie guided him to the couch, switching off the lights on the way.
“Looks like you’re going to have to put up with the Munson special then, eggs on toast,” He breathed, sitting down beside Steve and guiding his head into his lap.
He’d sat through a couple of Steve’s migraines. Sometimes they were fast and painless as a sun shower, other times he’d spend hours disorientated and puking up his guts. There wasn’t much Eddie could do for him, but sit there and be with him for it. In sickness and in health, all that crap. Eddie wasn’t sure when he’d become close enough to Steve that he’d sit through anything with him, but he knew now he would.
“Stevie, you know when I get outta this hellhole, I’m taking you with me, right?” Eddie breathed, feeling the sudden need for candour.
Sometime in the space between getting to know Steve and getting to love Steve, they’d crossed the line from familiar to familial.
Steve’s face nudged against Eddie’s palm, his forehead beaded with sweat.
“I’d like that,” he confirmed.
“We’d have to take Robin with us, though,” Steve added after a beat, causing Eddie to let out a breathy chuckle and dip down to press their foreheads together.
“Fine by me, long as you’re there.”

This 1970 Pontiac GTO convertible was first delivered to the A.C. Morris Garage of Summersville, West Virginia, and during prior ownership it underwent a body-off rotisserie refurbishment that was completed in 2006. The car is claimed to be one of just 241 examples that were ordered with 455ci V8 and an optional automatic transmission for the model year, and it is finished in Burgundy over red vinyl upholstery. Other equipment includes a four-barrel carburetor, a Ram Air hood, a power-operated convertible top, power steering, front disc brakes, and a 12-bolt rear end housing a Safe-T-Track limited-slip differential. Acquired by the selling dealer in 2013 out of Arizona, this GTO convertible is offered in Missouri with refurbishment photos, manufacturer’s literature, build sheets, a reproduction window sticker, documentation from Pontiac Historical Services, correspondence with the GM Heritage center, and a clean Missouri title.
Tumblr media
The car was finished from the factory in Burgundy, and the body was stripped, mounted to a rotisserie jig, and repainted during the refurbishment, at which time a replacement convertible top was installed. Features include a color-matched Endura front bumper, a chrome rear bumper, a Ram Air hood, and quad exhaust outlets with polished finishers.
Tumblr media
Rally II 14″ wheels are mounted with 215/70 Firestone Wide-Oval tires. Braking is provided by power-assisted front discs and rear drums, and the car was optioned with power steering when new.
Tumblr media
The cabin has been retrimmed with red vinyl upholstery (2254) as well as color-coordinated carpets and interior trim. Equipment includes front bucket seats and a rear bench, a woodgrain steering wheel, an AM/FM radio, and an 8-track player. A pre-delivery-style instruction tag is attached to the steering column, and Pontiac-branded rubber floor mats line the front and rear footwells.
Tumblr media
The turned metal and woodtone trim-accented cluster houses Rally instrumentation consisting of a 140-mph speedometer, a tachometer, and a combination gauge. The five-digit odometer shows under 96k miles, approximately 50 of which have been driven by the seller. True mileage is unknown.
Tumblr media
The optional 455ci V8 features a four-barrel carburetor and a Ram Air hood, and it produced a factory-rated 360 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque when new. The engine stamping shown within the gallery ends in 0P121234, which matches the final eight digits of the car’s serial number. Additional identification numbers are presented in the gallery.

Why do you think neither Aegon II nor Viserys II called their mother a Queen? I think that maybe they didn't remember her well and didn't feel much love for her?
It’s not about losing the memory of one’s mother. Their youth made them vulnerable to others’ misogyny, greed and ambition while they both went through some traumatic experiences and sought to rule peacefully.
Aegon III
Aegon III was 10 when he saw Rhaenyra be eaten alive by the dragon, Sunfyre that his uncle Aegon II rode. Aegon II made him watch. (Ironically, Rhaenyra herself was 10 or so when Alicent truly started to plot against her.) Aegon, already feeling guilty and ashamed for leaving Viserys II behind during the Battle in the Gullet, was forever shattered after he saw his mother die that way.
When Rhaenyra and Aegon II both died in 130 A.C., Aegon III succeeded them. But he was 10 (not in his age of majority, which is 16 in Westeros) and he had no personal support, no parent or close relative other than Baela and Rhaena Targaryen. Who while they did introduce and insert Daenaera Velayron as his second wife and didn’t let anyone stop them, they were still prevented from being as active in Aegon III’s rule as much as possible.
So his rule, for 5 years before he turned 16, was not truly his practically and situationally: “During the five years of his minority that followed, the realm was therefore ruled by Aegon's Hand of the King and a council of regents. Numerous political schemes, plots, and assassinations happened in those five years as the regents and Hands fought one another for political power.” (ASoIaF Wiki; “Aegon’s Regency”)
And when he does take back power on his 16th birthday/nameday:
“I mean to give the smallfolk peace and food and justice. If that will not suffice to win their love, let Mushroom make a progress. Or perhaps we might send a dancing bear. Someone once told me that the commons love nothing half so much as dancing bears. You may call a halt to this feast tonight as well. Send the lords home to their own keeps and give the food to the hungry. Full bellies and dancing bears shall be my policy.” Then Aegon turned to the three regents. “Lord Stackspear, Lord Grandison, Lord Merryweather, I thank you for your service. Consider yourselves free to go. I shall have no further need of regents.”
(Fire and Blood; “The Lysene Spring and the End of Regency”)
And his entire reign is described in The World of Ice and Fire:
It was a broken reign that followed, for Aegon himself was broken. He was melancholy to the end of his days, found pleasure in almost nothing, and locked himself in his chambers to brood for days on end. He likewise came to dislike being touched -- even by the hand of his beautiful queen. Even after she flowered [had her period], he was long in calling her to his bed...but ultimately their marriage was blessed with his two sons and three daughters. The eldest, Daeron, was named the Prince of Dragonstone and heir apparent.
Though he strove to give the realm peace and plenty in the wake of the Dance, Aegon III proved unwilling to court his own people, or his lords. His might have been a very different reign were it not for that one flaw in him -- his coldness to those he ruled (pg. 85)
Viserys II
As for Viserys, in the Battle in the Gullet a Tyroshi captain found him and he ended up living with the Lyseni Rogare family. He married the seven-years older Larra Rogare.
He was 8 or so in the Battle in the Gullet and when he was taken.
It wasn’t until he was 13 and Alyn “Oakenfist” Velayron brought him back to Westeros that he was reunited with Aegon III. And he didn’t become king until he was 49 -- before then he served as Hand to his brother and his sons, basically cleaning up their messes and supporting them. And then he only ruled for 2 years. The court/Faith/men are used to the perceived stability of a male ruler. He had already gotten and grown into a court where the Dance was not only still fresh enough that female rulers were held off by a wary hand, but his main purpose and goal all these years was to help others maintain and accrue their power rather than make great changes that would require a dedication and a different sort of application that I do not think he could psyche himself for. Add almost all the loss, guilt, and grief from Aegon's experience (minus the trauma of actually witnessing their mother's gory end firsthand), and I think Viserys also really just wanted to keep his "home" together. (And what is unique about his experience and guilt is that while Aegon had to go through several threats on his body, he was able to stay relatively safe and happier with the Rogares.) Do all the basics, play "nice" unless absolutely necessary, ensure the throne gets passed on through the needed channels (aka a incestuous sibling marriage thru Naerys x Aegon IV). And we can't discount how his much older wife Larra eventually left him and their kids for her home of Lys due to homesickness, the desire to freely worship her own gods and use her own language, post war xenophobia, etc., impressing on him his, his brother's, and their family isolation and loneliness--that desire to defend oneself by sticking to what keeps them together PLUS what keeps Targs ruling (Doctrine of Exceptionalism allowing incest for Targs): the incest limits who can be a part of the Targs dynasty while limiting who those kids can hope to use for their own ambitions (so little repeat of green vs black debacle?)
Maybe Viserys saw it as the best way to make his parents' deaths continue to mean something--by ensuring that their line and dynasty continues, their deaths were not for nothing and that is how he can make things up to them AND Aegon, while performing his duties to his brother and house. No, his mother's name would not be restored as a rightful queen, but "at least" he gets to make sure her efforts do not get wasted and some day the dragons will be restored. It's possible he saw this as the only thing he could have done, given his guilt and the atmosphere.
Yes, he was a bit more willing to engage with people around him, but he also came to be less so after Larra Rogare, his wife, left him: “His brother, Prince Viserys [...] had the gift of charm, but he himself grew stern after his wife abandoned him and their children for her native Lys” (pg. 85). I imagine that after the disasters of Baelor I, Daeron I and Aegon III’s coldness, that Viserys II’ “sterness” wouldn’t be received that as attractive or excusable in some circles.
The official ASoIaF wiki says this about how Viserys came to power:
There were some amongst the smallfolk — and even some lords — who felt that the Iron Throne should have rightfully passed to Baelor's sister Daena, as she was Aegon III's eldest daughter. However, a decade of isolation in the Maidenvault had left Daena and her sisters without powerful allies, and memories of Rhaenyra Targaryen and the Dance of the Dragons had left many leery of the idea of a woman on the Iron Throne. Also, Daena the Defiant was seen by many as being wild, unmanageable, and wanton (as a year earlier she had given birth to her bastard son Daemon). The precedents of the Great Council of 101 AC and the Dance of the Dragons were therefore cited, the claims of Baelor's sisters were set aside, and the crown passed to Viserys.
In All
Aegon III and Viserys II came to be more concerned with peace and ruling uncontested after the event of the chaotic and bloody Dance. They -- Aegon more then Viserys -- were alone, miserable, and most concerned with surviving and keeping things together. Again, it’s obvious that Aegon III was Depressed and ashamed of himself while Viserys consistently tried to be supportive but also went through his mother’s loss, the loss of his wife, having been away from trustworthy person for years before coming back home, etc. The Daeron pretenders also stirred up some trouble for them.
Alicent/Otto/the Hightowers usurping Rhaenyra & her losing while fighting such a bloody war made the idea of a female ruler more threatening, evil, “problematic”, etc. in the minds and collective mind of Westerosi nobility. Even among peasants. If you keep track of how Westerosi noblewomen are treated both being and not being claimants to regular house rule after the Dance, you’d see that Rhaenyra’s loss inflated misogyny (link is for @brideoffires‘s post).
Adding to that, the people around them passed over female claimants, using the precedents of the Great Council of 101 A.C. As a child, what was Aegon III supposed to do while steeped in a deep depression with no real therapy available until his death? And by the time Viserys comes into power, it’s far too late.
They once tried to restore dragons despite Aegon’s fear of them (because his mother gotten eaten alive by one in front of his very eyes at the age of 10):
They even attempted to restore the Targaryen dragons, despite Aegon’s fears--for none could blame him after witnessing his mother being eaten alive. He dreaded the sight of dragons--and had even less desire to ride upon one--but he was convinced that they would cow those who sought to oppose them. At Viserys’ suggestion, he sent away for nine mages from Essos, attempting to use their arts to kindle a clutch of eggs. This proved a debacle and a failure (A World of Ice and Fire; pg 86)

USS Texas History series: Primary Power
Tumblr media
The round device at low, left is a motor generator set in Interior Communications compartment. Above it are two very old starter boards. The left one controls that m-g set. The right one controls a set that is out of frame. That one is dated 1918 and provided power to the newly installed Ford range keeper that generated firing solutions for the 14" guns.
Information from Tom Scott, a Volunteer at the Battleship Texas Foundation:
"AC power was certainly around by 1910 and was rapidly gaining traction throughout the country as the primary way of providing electric power, meaning the basic knowledge and technology for its use was available. So, the decision to use 120 volts D.C. on the ship wasn't based upon lack of ability. I am not aware of any historic documentation that discusses the Navy's decision for D.C., but what we can talk about are some of its advantages that contributed to its use and what was done to overcome its disadvantages.
AC current offers a couple of major advantages over DC, it's more efficient and its voltage can be easily changed using transformers. Fundamental to the nature of electricity is the higher the circuit voltage that serves a load, the lower the amperage required to run it, and vice versa. This made the use of 120 volts problematic because it required very large amperage circuits to power big loads like the 150 hp steering motor and the large number of motors sized 10hp and higher. My feeling is that it was selected due to the inability use transformers on a D.C. circuit to change voltage and the predominance of 120 volt loads on the ship that included hundreds of light fixtures and portable plug-in devices. It was simply easier to increase capacity and wire sizes to accommodate the higher amperage loads created by lower voltage than to increase the voltage design of hundreds, if not thousands, of small devices to match a higher system voltage.
Another issue that certainly affected the decision was the ability to reverse motors and control their speed. That was difficult to do with AC motors and was generally accomplished in the early 20th century with multiple winding motors that were complicated and very expensive. That's where DC offers two very significant advantages that permitted the use of simple and compact motor designs. It is easy to reverse any D.C. motor by reversing polarity, done by reversing its two power wires. Speed can be controlled by increasing or decreasing resistance in its its power circuit. That is impossible to do with A.C. motors. Small motor speed can easily be changed using a rheostat, or variable resister that uses a wiper on a resistive winding. Large motor speed control was accomplished using several large resistors that were switched in and out of the circuit with contactors. You could have almost smooth, almost continuous speed control if you had enough of them. Electric steering and its huge 150hp electric motor is the largest example on board that took full advantage of that method. Other motors, like those used to train turrets and elevate guns only ran at one speed, but had to be very accurately adjusted to the correct settings using resistor banks.
Regardless of the predominance of D.C. devices on board, the need for AC current and different voltages was present in the ship's earliest years of service and it greatly increased over time. The solution was to use motor generator sets, called m-g sets, on board where a 120 vdc motor would run an ac alternator to provide ac current and the voltage needed by a single device. In the Interior Communications compartment, there are several small ones dating back to 1916-18. There are also two very large ones synchronized together to power a large number of "selsyn (self synchronizing)" circuits that among other things, were used to provide range and bearing information from fire control towers to main battery plot and firing solutions to the guns. Others were installed in the dynamo rooms that powered the 40mm gun mounts and also provided a different dc voltage to the ship's degaussing system. However, most m-g sets were scattered throughout the ship, close to the devices that needed them. That way, they were able to avoid long wiring runs to reach the loads or changes to the overall system. They could tap into the existing 120 volt ship's system to get their power. That wasn't an easy task since it required careful engineering and design to prevent overloads or imbalances, but it was do-able.
One of the larger issues was to provide the additional power as large, new ac powered devices were added that included more radio and radar equipment, and 1.1" then 40mm anti aircraft weapons. To accommodate that, system capacity was increased 33% by replacing the four original 300kw 120v.d.c. turbo generators with four 400kw Westinghouse units. They also picked up significant capacity by replacing the big electric ovens and ranges in the crew galley with oil fired units.
So, there were significant compromises and shortcomings that were inherent to the 120 volt D.C. system, but it answered a number of almost unsolvable problems in 1910-11 when the ship was designed.
Tumblr media
The resistor bank and contactors that controlled speed and direction for the 150hp electric steering motor.
Tumblr media
Here are the two largest motor-generator sets on the ship. They are located in Interior Communications and provided power to the gunnery systems that provided all of the range and bearing information from the fire control towers, and firing solutions to the gun turrets.
Tumblr media
Hidden in very tight compartments beneath the turrets are the electrical platforms that contained all of the electrical panels and equipment that ran the turrets. The black boxes on the right side are resistor banks that controlled motor speed on the shell rammers.
Tumblr media
Here is one of the original 1912 controllers used on the 120 volt d.c. air compressors used to supply air charges that fired the torpedoes. The compressors were repurposed in 1925, when the torpedo tubes were removed, to serve the gas ejector systems on the 14" and 5" guns, but the old controllers remained. They were crude and simple, but they did the job well and were easily serviced.

Dust on an Old Machine (Pt. 2)
Oh boy, I had a lot of fun writing this part. Do I think it's OOC? Yeah, a little. But I can explain my thought process in another post.

Eurydice couldn't sleep that night. Maybe it was because she voted to sleep on the couch in the main room, but it was sufficiently comfortable. No, her mind was too busy, racing too fast. After the news, how could she not be?
…How long had it been? Ten years since she was at the University of London. Ten years since she’d seen him in the flesh. One year since she last heard from him. And now he’s crashed back into her life, by being the perpetrator of an elaborate magic trick to send a man to his grave (if Ryunosuke’s proposals were correct).
What on earth had happened to the Enoch Drebber she knew?
Lying in bed wasn’t going to answer anything, she decided. So she slipped out of the house… and into the night.
No one was awake at this point. You'd have to be a similar kind of restless, or perhaps be some kind of criminal. Thankfully, it seemed like the excitement of the Great Exhibition tired out most everyone in London.
Eurydice walked down the streets with purpose, with a goal in mind. Or, at least she hoped.
After Enoch was forced to leave school, the last thing they promised to each other face-to-face was that they would keep in touch by writing letters. And it was fulfilled for a number of years. Though it wasn’t as simple as it initially sounded.
His letters came to Eurydice simply enough through the postal service. It was her sending to Enoch that posed a problem.
Mr. Drebber was frequently on the move in London, and he never stayed in the same spot for long. From his job opportunities, he explained in one letter. He supposedly had a main workshop, but he never gave her the address. It wasn’t that he didn’t trust her; it was that his clients often wanted strict confidentiality.
The solution?
In his letters to her, he’d put down an address (often somewhere secluded) and instructions at the bottom on where to leave her reply. He was very meticulous about it. It seemed to work, as she would get a reply from him not long after.
After a long time walking, Eurydice slipped down an inconspicuous alleyway. The last address Enoch told her to send him a reply.
She was about to sit down on an empty fruit crate—her feet were killing her— when she noticed an envelope barely sticking out from a space in the wood.
She hadn't seen one of these in a year. It was no coincidence one would show up tonight, of all nights.
She picked it up and opened it. Inside, just as she hoped, was an extremely neatly written letter in black ink.
“Eurydice—
I know you have associations with that Eastern lawyer: the one who has taken up defence of one Albert Harebrayne. I have no doubt you were there at the trial and heard him announce me as the engineer who built his machine.
I must implore you: do not involve yourself anymore with this matter. I have lost a great multitude of things over my life. You are one of the few things I haven't lost despite everything.
I think I can comprehend your feelings on the matter, but please: I will explain everything once the cogs of this operation have stopped turning and the dust settles. We might just be able to settle into a new normal. We could see each other again... after all these years.
I just ask you to play your part: stay silent and passive. Do not tell anyone of your relationship to me, and do not contribute any more than you already have. I don't say this to be cruel to you; I say this to protect you.
Again, I will explain everything to you once this is over. Until then,
E. Drebber"
It was just like him to be two steps ahead: already knowing about Ryunosuke and the entire trial. But… he was trying to protect her? That put a sinking feeling in her stomach.
“He must be the mastermind behind the accident then,” she thought grimly. But why? Drebber was many things, but he was no wanton murderer. He was too smart, too calculating. No, if he were to kill… he would have a very good reason, at least in his mind.
There were too many unanswered questions. Not just from the past few days, but from all the time they’ve spent corresponding. And she would get to the bottom of it… one way or another.
Eurydice sighed deeply and tucked the note into her pocket. "I'm sorry, old friend... but I'm afraid that's just not possible."

The following quotes are from His Divine Grace Shrila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada on Lord Rama’s Appearance day. There is also a lecture by Shrila Prabhupada given in Hawaii, March 27, 1969 on Lord Ramachandra’s appearance. 710407LE.BOM Lectures So this process should be adopted, how to become sukrtina. Sukrti means yajna-dana-tapa-kriya. One must perform sacrifices as prescribed in the sastras, and they must give in charity their hard-earned money for Krishna’s cause. That is called dana. Yajna, dana, and tapasya. Tapasya. Just like tomorrow is Shri Rama-navami. The tapasya will be that all the devotees will observe fasting from morning till evening. This is called tapasya. Just like Ekadasi day–there is no eating sumptuously. Simply you take little fruits and flowers. Try to avoid that also. You don’t take even water. That is really ekadasi. But because we cannot do it–in the Kali-yuga the time is different–therefore we are allowed to take little fruit and milk, which is called anukalpa. These are different methods of tapasya. And yajna. This yajna, sankirtanaih prayair yajnaih, yajanti hi su-medhasah. In this age you cannot perform that big asvamedha yajna, gomedha yajna, rajasuya yajna, so many other yajnas. It is not possible. First of all, you have no means to perform such yajnas, hundreds and hundreds of tons ghee required for putting into the sacrificial fire. You have not even a drop of your ghee. So forget all those yajnas. In this age, yajnaih sankirtanaih prayaih. 8-03-26.Letter: Mukunda Please accept my blessings. I am sorry I am delayed to reply your letter dated March 14, 1968, which I received over a week ago. I am very glad that you are repentant even for some action which is not sanctioned by me. This attitude is very nice and improves one in progressing on the path of devotional service. The Rakhi Bandhan ceremony observed by you under instruction of Prasad isn’t approved by our Vaisnava rituals. Of course, such ceremony is observed among the Hindu community as a socio-religious convention. But in our Vaisnava community there is no such observance. https://www.instagram.com/p/CqchnKkr1o1/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Alicent's fans keep lying about her acting as regent when it’s pretty clear that the one doing the ruling whilst Viserys is bedridden is Otto. He allows Alicent the illusion that she is in on it but it’s made clear that she is not. She didn't even know the Council was plotting behind her back to put her son on the throne.
What power Alicent had and what has she done for the realm ?? It’s actually name one thing she did in over two decades besides pushing for male primogeniture. Ah yes, she wore a a green dress, no pre-marital sex, no brown hair, no queen regnant, trying to maim a child, can't manage without her father HE WOULD BE PARTIAL TO ME, and her servants refuse to help her or obey her unless she show them her feet.
The thing is anon, that the shows’ ages do not match the book/original lore's ages and people don’t know/care about 🔗 the different types of Queens.
By canon/original lore, Alicent was 18 when she married Viserys. Rhaenyra was 9 when Alicent married Viserys.
So it's hard to keep track of how old the characters are in the show without doing some research.
Alicent is pregnant with Helaena around 3 years after the events of episode 2, and Viserys says Aegon is 1 1/2 or 2 in episode 3.
This article says it is 10 years between episodes 5 and 6.
And from 7 to 8, it’s been 6 years, as Rhaenys remarks on how long Corlys has been gone.
That would make Alicent’s Aegon (Aegon the Elder) 18 by the time of his coronation. One, far past his canon, societal, and cultural age of majority (which is 16). Two, by canon/original lore Aegon was born in 107 A.C. and was coronated in 129 A.C., confirmed in the book. So he was 21-22 when coronated in the original lore.
So either way, Alicent would have never been the Queen Regent and making decisions for him by custom and right, because her son would have been in his majority.
So, yeah Alicent of the original lore/canon lore/book was a lot more determined and decisive--using whatever at her disposal and planning for a long time to manipulate things for herself and her son for after Viserys’ death. Much more competent that HotD Alicent.
In the book, she purposefully makes way for Aegon’s coronation by going against tradition and the monarch’s-word-is-law precedent by seizing the small council with Otto and Criston Cole:
Long simmering, the conflict burst into the open on the third day of the third moon of 129 AC, when the ailing, bedridden King Viserys I Targaryen closed his eyes for a nap in the Red Keep of King’s Landing and died without waking. His body was discovered by a serving man at the hour of the bat, when it was the king’s custom to take a cup of hippocras. The servant ran to inform Queen Alicent, whose apartments were on the floor below the king’s.
Septon Eustace, writing on these events some years later, points out that the manservant delivered his dire tidings directly to the queen, and her alone, without raising a general alarum. Eustace does not believe this was wholly fortuitous; the king’s death had been anticipated for some time, he argues, and Queen Alicent and her party, the so-called greens, had taken care to instruct all of Viserys’s guards and servants in what to do when the day came.
(The dwarf Mushroom suggests a more sinister scenario, whereby Queen Alicent hurried King Viserys on his way with a pinch of poison in his hippocras. It must be noted that Mushroom was not in King’s Landing the night the king died, but rather on Dragonstone, in service with Princess Rhaenyra.)
Queen Alicent went at once to the king’s bedchamber, accompanied by Ser Criston Cole, Lord Commander of the Kingsguard. Once they had confirmed that Viserys was dead, Her Grace ordered his room sealed and placed under guard. The serving man who had found the king’s body was taken into custody, to make certain he did not spread the tale. Ser Criston returned to White Sword Tower and sent his brothers of the Kingsguard to summon the members of the king’s small council. It was the hour of the owl.
(Fire and Blood; The Blacks and the Greens)
AND
Grand Maester Orwyle opened the meeting by reviewing the customary tasks and procedures required at the death of a king. He said, “Septon Eustace should be summoned to perform the last rites and pray for the king’s soul. A raven must needs be sent to Dragonstone at once to inform Princess Rhaenyra of her father’s passing. Mayhaps Her Grace the queen would care to write the message, so as to soften these sad tidings with some words of condolence? The bells are always rung to announce the death of a king, someone should see to that, and of course we must begin to make our preparations for Queen Rhaenyra’s coronation—”
Ser Otto Hightower cut him off. “All this must needs wait,” he declared, “until the question of succession is settled.” As the King’s Hand, he was empowered to speak with the king’s voice, even to sit the Iron Throne in the king’s absence. Viserys had granted him the authority to rule over the Seven Kingdoms, and “until such time as our new king is crowned,” that rule would continue.
“Until our new queen is crowned,” someone said. In Grand Maester Munkun’s account, the words are Orwyle’s, spoken softly, no more than a quibble. But Mushroom and Septon Eustace insist it was Lord Beesbury who spoke up, and in a waspish tone.
“King,” insisted Queen Alicent. “The Iron Throne by rights must pass to His Grace’s eldest trueborn son.”
