I never realized how hard it can be to find Black books that aren't about slavery or discrimination until I went looking for a birthday present for my friend.

I recommend Tristan Strong Punches a Hole in the Sky and Skandar and the Unicorn Thief. I didn't read all of Tristan and know there are enemies that are shackles, but the story overall is about a boy falling into a fantasy world of African folklore.

The Black character isn't the protagonist in Unicorn, but she's among the best.

It was the last day of being with my church friends for the break, and tomorrow I leave with my Girl Scout troop for our weekend trip. I look forward to all the activities and being with my friends from Cadettes again. I only get to see them every other week, so there is always much to catch up on.

Fucking awesome. An engrossing read that sucks you in straight from the beginning. The hype around this book is real and is one of my favourite things I’ve read this year. What an immersive world and a fantastic story. Cannot wait for the next book. It better come out next year.

Very excited for the 3rd book to be released! While I am not the target demographic for these books, I've found them easy to read and enjoyable too. While some parts are a bit predictable, it's understandable and still makes for a fun read.

The second book left me with a few questions so I'm hoping the next book answers them nice and quickly (not long to go to find out!)

I also appreciate the representation in the book. I didn't feel like it was forced, and while some things aren't necessarily relevant to the story, they are necessary for those characters, and for readers to see themselves.

My favourite part about this series is creating OCs that would fit into this world, especially coming up with unicorn names (if you couldn't tell from this blog's name).

Today was another fun day with church friends and my family. Julien and I played video games together, and I got a bit more reading done. I also went on a walk with Mom at the park near our house. It wasn't the nicest day out today, but it's not often that Mom and I get to go out to our favorite spot there together. We like to sit under the gazebo in the wooded area and talk.
