Disablity aids are super cool.

You, and your aids look awesome, pretty/handsome/pleasant, and super rad.

I often feel embarrassed for wearing ear defenders, or for having a tablet harnessed around me but like?? That isnt what it is!! It is a disability aid. It is an AAC device. It is how I communicate, and there is no reason to he embarrassed by that.

there's a local coffee shop that i visit and i've been using my aac to communicate there because i often go in the morning before my mouth words have woken up, or if i go in the afternoon just to save what little energy i have.

i keep having this awesome interaction with one of the workers there, every time i order with my aac he makes sure that he heard it correctly and goes the extra mile to make sure that the words i say are heard and appreciated, which if you're an aac user, you know is a battle. (people love to gloss over you when you speak with ne thing but your mouth)

when he brought me my coffee and s'mores croissant (yes that's a thing they make and its AWESOME) i replied with thank you on my ipad and he was like, how do you say you're welcome on that? and i pressed it for him and he was like, cool.

which was kind of awesome? a lot of times i see people who sneer at the thought of using ne thing but their mouth words to communicate and the fact that he was like, actually chill about it and curious was super refreshing honestly.

This amazing thing is called “Speech Assistant”. It’s the Augmented Alternative Communication (AAC) application program that I use when I cannot seem to vocalize my words (like right now for example). It speaks for me and I can set different categories to organize my phrase and word buttons and with my keyboard, I can type out full on paragraphs and things that I want to say. And ahead of time, if I have something that I want to say, like a speech or a poem or something, I can pre-record it and attach that to a button and have that ready to go on a button with my own voice. I can do that for any phrases that I want when my voice is actually functioning the way that I want it to.

I’ve tried a few different kinds of AAC programs and so far, this one is probably my favorite one. Mainly because of how well it works, how customizable it is, user friendly it is, the fact that it doesn’t make me feel like I’m a child (which is important because I am a 35 year old autistic person and not a child), and it didn’t cost me a small fortune. It cost just under $50, a one time payment which is exactly what I was looking for as far as a price range. There are some AAC programs out there that are also one time payments but most of them are well over $100 or even a couple hundred dollars and over that. Plus needing the device itself which can run several hundreds of dollars as well, depending. And then, you can also find some AAC programs that have subscription services which…well, those ones I do not recommend. Mainly because then you have to worry about being able to afford the payments every single month or every single year. And that can get very expensive very quickly and then you have to worry about losing your ability to communicate because of not being able to afford the subscription fee and that’s…not great.

This is also a really good one because it can be used both on an iPad and an iPhone. I am not sure if this app is available on Android devices or not. If it is, then awesome! Because I highly HIGHLY recommend this AAC program. It’s very easy to use, it isn’t infantilizing and I find it to be so very very helpful. It hasn’t failed me yet and: you can choose voices from any of the available voices that you have at your disposal on your device (like for Siri, for example). It’s wonderful and I love it and it has been allowing me to communicate so very freely with my spouse today and it’s just…it’s so freeing and I’m so very happy that I can still communicate and talk even when I cannot vocalize my words 🥹💜

hi ! I want to start this by saying I received a copy of speak for yourself for free , which I am so very grateful for , not just so I can write this but also because it has helped me so much in my daily life. I am using the app to write this review , just because I find it so much easier than typing! as always, I have no affiliation with the creators of SfY, but i think they’re absolutely awesome.

speak for yourself was created by two SLPs,  which is really reflected in some of the features found in this AAC program.

speak for yourself has only one grid size, 8x15,  but with a unique feature - the user can begin with as few as two words accessible, and those two words will stay in the same place as their vocabulary expands.

in fact , all of the words in speak for yourself will always stay in the same place, no matter whether you're working with 2 words or the full 14,000 available in the app!

speak for yourself bases its language system around the concept of motor planning,  meaning that once a user learns where to find a word , they never have to learn that word again - it’ll always be in the exact same place, allowing language acquisition to be supported by the motor plans in the user’s mind. not only that, but all 14,000 words are available within just two taps. this hugely improves speech rate and also makes the app very easy to navigate, in my opinion it’s an absolutely brilliant feature and isnt found within any other software.

words are organised by association, rather than parts of speech - so “book” is found under “read”, rather than under “nouns”. i personally think this makes the app more accessible for young users or people who struggle to understand parts of speech, words are more intuitive to find than in other AAC apps.

this isn’t to say SFY doesn’t focus on grammar at all - the opposite is actually true. verb inflections are always organised in a certain order (eg. the “-ing” form is always two buttons to the right of the root word.) this is really helpful for people learning language through motor planning, and has helped me develop my own grammar skills over time. an inflections folder is also included, so almost any word can be altered to its plural form, past tense, etc.

specific words can be made visible or invisible to the user through the “open/close” feature, to allow progressive language development and to stop the user becoming overwhelmed by too many words. all words can be made accessible through the “babble” feature - great for exploring new words and building motor plans! the search feature is also very robust, it highlights the path to the word and automatically opens the word to make it visible in the future.

once typed into the speech bar, sentences can be stored by touching the “hold that thought” button, which saves sentences to be spoken later. this is an invaluable feature for AAC users, as we so often get interrupted with another question and don’t get to speak what we were preparing!

the typing feature in SFY is very well-integrated. it uses your device’s keyboard, and has the option to read out each letter. it loads quickly, so switching from symbols to typing doesn’t interrupt your sentence flow. however, it doesn’t include the symbols for each typed word like i’ve seen in other AAC apps, and it doesn’t have in-app word prediction.

sadly, SFY is only available in english right now, and it’s unclear whether other languages will be added in the future ; as a bilingual user this is something i’d really love, so i hope other languages are one day supported in SFY!

speak for yourself uses Cereproc voices, with customisable pitch, and Acapela voices are available as an in-app purchase. the supported Cereproc accents are australian english, indian english, south african english, irish english, UK english and US english. however, the former three all sound quite automated and child voices are only available in US english (and british english if you purchase an acapela voice). i’d also like to mention that while i really like a lot of the Cereproc voices, they can sometimes begin to glitch towards the end of very long sentences. not really a big deal, but again, still worth mentioning.

I grew up on EAH and MH too!! My favorite EAH characters have to be Raven (of course), Lizzy, Maddy as well and Dexter! I wish they continued the series ;;

For (gen 1) MH disability head canons, I've always seen Draculaura as autistic! She struggles a lot with smell and foods which is why she can't handle meat and blood. Her special interests are Lolita fashion and bats! She uses a cane to help conserve energy during the day! She has chronic fatigue from being nocturnal but having to go to school during the day. She's a spoonie because she thinks the word is cute! Just not a silver spoonie ;) (vampire pun)

I may be projecting here, but I see Frankie as being hypermobile/having EDS! Yes she's a frankenstein and that's why she can detach her hands and legs but it's way too relatable to me xD I also think she's learning disabled, maybe dyslexia or dysgraphia!

Lagoona would be an ambulatory wheelchair user out of water because her legs were made for swimming, not walking! This one may be silly but she has POTS, it's mostly a pun based on her being from the sea and needing more salt since she isn't in it as much!

Clawdeen is also learning disabled and has fibromyalgia! She exercises a lot to help with her pain and fashion design is her way of expressing herself because she has problems wearing complicated outfits herself due to how many spoons it takes to put them on.

Cleo has severe eczema that causes chronic pain, her bandages help cover up sore skin and keep her skin medications in place! This is mainly based on her being so upset about getting a pimple in the show which I didn't like as someone with face acne. She also has ADHD with impulsive and attention-seeking behaviors.

Ghoulia is non-verbal autistic and an AAC user! She also uses knee and back braces to help with her posture caused by scoliosis. Her special interests are coding and math!

Deuce is legally blind but can see some colors, shapes, etc.

I could think of more but these are the ones I have off the top of my head! ^^

SOAP note - clinical documentation that chronicles how a therapy session went, the performance of the client, any specific areas of note, and plans for future sessions. SOAP is an acronym for "Subjective, Objective, Assessment, Plan". They are used across the allied health professions, although not exclusively used.

Assessment, Diagnostic, or Evaluation - what it says on the tin; basically a diagnostic test run to diagnose a specific communication disorder (if possible).

PHI - Protected Health Information. Basically any of your private business relating to your health or personal information that you would generally not want strangers to have access to read. In our current times in the US, HIPAA is the law governing patients' rights and clinicians' responsibilities in the handling and management of PHI. I am currently establishing lore for the Federation and how that is all handled.

WNL - Within Normal Limits. This is an acronym designating that a patient or client's test results fall within the average expected test score range for people of their age, AGAB, and/or developmental level.

Assessment Report or Evaluation Report - a document presenting and interpreting the results of an evaluation. Will also include the case history/background/health history summary of the client.

Case History/Case History Form - A written document and/or form detailing the client's medical and developmental (if a child) history, in addition to a description of the presenting complaint or concern. This may include past test results such as audiograms, prior evaluation reports, and the like.

AAC - alternative augmentative communication. This is any method of communication that is not verbal and can be anything as low-tech as a printed grid at which the person points to communicate thoughts and desires, to as high-tech as a device that produces speech when the user simply looks at the desired icons and makes a sentence or phrase with them. There are all kinds of devices and modalities, and a wide variety of AAC users who use this form of communication for a myriad of reasons.

Audiogram - a visual representation of hearing test results. Depicts the level of hearing loss one has, if any.
