La Academia Noruega de Ciencia y Letras distinguio con el premio Abel -que es considerado como el ‘Nobel’ de las matematicas- a la estadounidense Karen Uhlenbeck, por su trabajo sobre analisis geometrico y teoria de gauge.

Esto convierte a Karen Uhlenbeck en la primera mujer en recibir esta distincion, la mas alta en el campo de las matematicas. El premio Abel fue creado en 2002 y entregado por primera vez en 2003 a Jean-Pierre Serre, del College de France.

El presidente del Comite Abel, Hans Munthe-Kaas, senalo que la profesora emerita de la Universidad de Texas en Austin (UT) recibira el galardon, creado en 2002, porque con su trabajo “ha transformado drasticamente el paisaje matematico”.

En informacion difundida por la agencia de noticias Europa Press, Munthe-Kaas destaco los logros de la academica en ecuaciones diferenciales parciales geometricas, “teoria de los indicadores y sistemas integrables, y por el impacto fundamental de su trabajo en el analisis, la geometria y la fisica matematica“.

El trabajo de la experta en ecuaciones derivadas parciales es considerado uno de los mas destacados en la materia del siglo XX y forma parte de los avances innovadores en geometria.

El presidente de la UT, Gregory L. Fenves revelo que durante 30 anos Karen Uhlenbeck se enfoco “a una investigacion que revoluciono el analisis geometrico y de las matematicas.

“Fue una maestra inspiradora y una mentora dedicada a miles de estudiantes de UT”, anadio al puntualizar que “el premio Abel es el honor mas alto en matematicas, y es uno de los que la profesora Uhlenbeck se merece“.

La galardonada, de 76 anos, originaria de Cleveland, es profesora de investigacion invitada en la Universidad de Princeton y profesora asociada del Institute for Advanced Study (IAS), en Estados Unidos.

Algunos de sus trabajos se centraron en teorias de gauge, proporcionando una base analitica para una serie de conceptos explorados en la fisica moderna.

El Premio Abel reconoce los logros en cualquier etapa de la carrera en esta materia y lleva el nombre del matematico noruego Niels Henrik Abel (1802-1829); es diferente al Fields Medal, el cual se otorga a menores de 40 anos.
