trying to explain that there has never been a single instance in the show to indicate that jack is intended to be a child/toddler/baby in any way and that all canon actually makes it pretty clear he’s supposed to be a teenager/young adult is like trying to explain that the cheese is under the sauce in a Chicago style pizza

Ableism in Hockey
[PT: Ableism in Hockey. End PT] Trigger warning: Ableist comments and language, uncensored slur. We already talk about the homophobia, misogyny, racism, abuse and bullying that's almost engrained in hockey culture. However, I don't see many people talk about the ableism that's way too common within hockey. Firstly, what is ableism?
Ableism is a form of discrimination, particularly towards people with physical, mental, intellectual and other forms of disabilities. Ableism towards those with mental illness is called sanism. Some examples of ableism include inaccessiblity, using ableist slurs (such as the r-slur), believing that disabled people are broken and need to be "fixed" or "cured", believing that people with certain mental health conditions are "evil" (ex. the evil alter stereotype towards folks with Dissociative Identity Disorder or believing that everyone with Narcissistic Personality Disorder is abusive). Ableism within hockey fandoms.
Some of you are already familiar with the "blind/deaf ref" joke. Almost everyone has made such jokes at some point (or at least laughed at one). Well, earlier today I was watching an Instagram reel featuring a league of blind hockey players. The comments, while most of them surprisingly supportive, also showed that such jokes aren't exactly harmless...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Worst part, I only saw two people take issue with these comments. TWO. Ironically enough, one of them was a referee who just so happened to actually be blind! While it's easy to assume they didn't know better (and they probably didn't, considering this joke is unfortunately way too common), it kind of serves as a reminder about how we view disabled hockey fans, players, coaches and, yes, even refs (especially those that are blind or deaf). And it's not just blind or deaf individuals being made fun of. It's also very easy to go into hockey spaces and see disability or neurodivergent-based buzzwords thrown around, such as "delusional" (or, and this is the only time I'll say this willingly, "delulu"), without the people saying it even realizing the harmful affects it could have on those who do genuinely experience delusions or psychosis (such as those with schizophrenia).
Ableism within the sport itself.
Within hockey, some youth organizations still use the m-word (shown below so people know what I'm referring to), despite it being considered an offensive term (and even a slur to some) towards people with dwarfism. In 2020, Hockey Canada dropped the term, but some organizations still use it, including USA Hockey.
Tumblr media
Ableism by the players is also something we should address. In 2022, the Boston Bruins signed Mitchell Miller, a player who's infamous for bullying a black disabled teen (CW: Uncensored r-slur, brief detail of physical violence and unsanitary actions). He was eventually released two days later after backlash from fans (though the contract didn't end until February), however it was not a good look for Boston. (Man, ableism and racism. Talk about a double whammy). Earlier this year, a video surfaced of Carson Briere and a few other individuals pushing an unoccupied wheelchair down the stairs; the wheelchair was severely damaged and had to be replaced. Not long after the video surfaced, Mercyhurst Hockey cut him from the team. Both of the above mentioned have since signed with a team in Slovakia.
And this isn't even getting into the likelihood of ableist slurs being used on the ice. Lastly, many hockey arenas are still inaccessible, with many disabled fans unable to enter access in some, getting accessible seating is a hassle and many unable to buy tickets due to high prices (something that lots of disabled folks have issues with in many events.). Crowds and noise at venues can also be overwhelming to those on the autism spectrum (Like me!) and unfortunately not many hockey arenas have sensory rooms (However there IS some improvement being made on this end!) And unfortunately, watching from TV might not even be an option for some folks, as digital ads have also raised concerns about potentially causing seizures in photosensitive folks.
Disabled folks are considered an afterthought when it comes to fun events such as sports.
That may seem like an exaggeration, but unfortunately it's not. Disabled folks are always viewed as an afterthought in the world, and whenever basic accessible features are requested, they're told to "grow up snowflake" or that the "world doesn't revolve around you". And sports is no different. As the above show, disabled folks aren't taken seriously, especially when it's so easy to see blind and deaf folks become the butt of jokes when making fun of refs, mockery of addiction (alcohol addiction, gambling addiction, drug abuse, etc). And the worst part: Almost nobody is talking about it. Not until not anyway. We discuss the misogyny, the queerphobia and the racism. But we never talk about the ableism within hockey culture. Well, now's the time.

I don’t want to give this person attention for their shitty hot take but I’m just going to point out it is weird and gross (and doesn’t make sense) to say that Krogan would be ableist towards Viggo for being partially blind/half blind because of the fact that Krogan himself… is also blind in one eye. He just doesn’t have a cataract over his blind eye like Viggo does, which makes it significantly harder for us the viewer to tell that he is blind in one eye.
As a rule of thumb, anyone who has a facial scar that is as large as Krogan’s (and is also completely healed and is very clearly very old), is going to have lasting effects from that old wound. Krogan’s scar cuts completely through his eyelid, meaning when he received this deep, horrible wound, that it would have completely cut open and tore his eyelid apart. An eyelid is a form of protection for your eye, and if your eyelid becomes damaged there is a very high chance that your eye will as well.
Facial wounds heal very quickly and are also most of the time do not leave scars if they are not very deep, for context.
And besides, because I know that someone is going to scream that this is a “sPeCuLaTiOn”, like my inherent hours I poured into researching how facial healing and scarring works means nothing simply because I say something someone doesn’t like, Krogan also displays behaviors that would suggest that he also has trouble seeing out of that eye!! Shocker! I know!
Krogan always, always keeps Johann on his non-blinded side or in front of him. He does this with several other people throught his screen time on the show.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In another part of this, in the wings of war episode when Viggo and Krogan are by the volcano, Krogan keeps Viggo on his good side AND IN FRONT OF HIM no matter what, so he can keep an eye on him. It serves no functional purpose for Krogan to simultaneously stay on Viggo’s good side as well if Kroganwws going to use this as an exploit to viggo considering the fact that he has an entire lack of not being in Viggo’s blind spot, as well as the fact that Viggo would ALSO BE IN HIS BLIND SPOT.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Third and final point, a smaller one. Whenever someone is speaking to Krogan on his blinded side; he always has to turn to the individual talking, and it always takes him a moment to realize that they are even there in the first place because he couldn’t use his peripheral vision to spot them because again… he can’t see out of that eye.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’ve rewatched his scenes enough to know this. He doesn’t physically show his disability very much (much akin to viggo) because he’s completely used to being partially/half blind and it’s just an everyday experience for him that he is half blind, and people are less likely to notice it than Viggo’s blindness because Krogan doesn’t have a cataract (the gray film over Viggo’s eye that discolors it as being gray.)
Tl;dr saying Krogan would be ableist is stupid and very gross because Krogan is also canonically physically disabled- In the exact same way as Viggo, albeit from a different method, of course. So he’d literally being ableist to himself.
Please read the tags. I don’t want to discuss this. This is a vent pointing out a double standard.

vent below the cut
well i have finally reached the point of breaking down crying at night beccause of my fucking job and the fact that im on closing for two weeks straight. again. after telling my manager in no uncertain terms that i cannot physically or emotionally handle it. and said manager telling me that it for sure won't happen again.
and the fact tim going to have to write out an official report against him for this and the fact that its pretty fucking clearly ableist or at best the most dismissive goddamn thing he could be doing. because last time i tried to make an official availability change he coerced me out of it by promising to be more reasonable with the amount of closing shifts i have. which he apparently lied to my goddamn face about.

hey here’s a newsflash for anyone who hasn’t realized it yet:
you can point out racism without resorting to ableist slurs. you can complain about racists without calling them names that demean disabled people.
that’s a thing that you can do. that you should do. and if you can’t manage that? then your antiracist Tumblr slacktivism means jack fucking shit. and it’s clear to everyone that you don’t actually care about marginalized people, you just want to score points for your own little team in the Oppression Olympics.
fuck. off.

Static image version of a previously posted video. All images are ALT text, but I shall also paste the text here:
COMMUNITY PSA: A reminder that those who identify physically as nonhuman are welcome and have always, and will always, be a part of the therian, alterhuman, nonhuman, otherkin, and similar communities, and can use ANY of these labels.
Whether their reason for identifying this way is spiritual, due to delusions, trauma, mental health, conditions such as lycanthropy or zoanthropy or is similar to the notion of "this is my body, and I am nonhuman, therefore my body is nonhuman" is their business and theirs alone.
People outside of the communities will always find a way to dislike us, and trying to cater to them by putting down other members of these groups will never make them fully accept us. Playing into the "Us vs Them" mindset only pushes the community apart.
All I hear when I see videos and comments from fellow therians, nonhumans, otherkin and alterhumans talking about these identities being ONLY non-physical is, "well, we OBVIOUSLY don't identify physically as animals/etc. We're not like those CRAZY people!"
Which is not only ableist but paints those who do identify physically in a bad light, whatever their reason may be. Delusions and mental illnesses that may cause them does not mean the identity of that individual is fake or wrong. So treat others nicely, even if you may not understand.
Not only that but delusions and the mental illnesses that cause them do not always equate to distressing or bad. Unlearn the idea that such things are an indicator of something being wrong and so has to be fixed because that mindset hurts many who live unbothered lives with them.
All of my accounts will always be safe spaces for those who have physical nonhuman and alterhuman identities. Just as they will be a safe space for those whose identity is non-physical. The only one who can decide what and who you are is yourself.
Stay true to yourself! Ignore, report and block the haters! Your happiness is more important than their ideas of you!

AITA for creating and running a gimmick blog?
A few months back, I was bored and decided to hop on the trend of gimmick blogs. Since I don't have any crazy skills like identifying cars or programming bots, I settled on something I thought was extremely simple: correcting typos. So I'll sometimes reblog posts that have typos in them and comment with corrections. I would only do this on posts that were already lighthearted or joking in tone; I would never derail a serious post with it. And I really haven't used it very often - maybe a couple times a week at most, just when I happen to notice a good candidate.
Well, recently I was inundated out of nowhere by a bunch of anons telling me this was a horribly offensive idea. According to them, I was insulting dyslexic people, non-native English speakers, people without access to education, and a whole bunch of other groups with these unwarranted corrections.
I had honestly never considered that angle, and I've paused using that blog so I can try and reflect on it. But when I replied to a couple of the asks asking for a better explanation of exactly how this was harmful - because I genuinely wanted to be informed - the vast majority of the replies, with few exceptions, were obscenely rude to me. I've been called classist, ableist, racist, and a lot of much worse words I don't care to repeat here. I blocked exactly two people because they were being extremely hateful in my notes, while still trying to engage with the more polite ones, but of course I still got accused of blocking and ignoring everyone I disagreed with.
The truth is, I'm still not sure whether or not I disagree with any of them on the actual subject at hand; I just can't deal with people being bitter and rude and assuming the worst of me. I tried to make it clear that I was more than willing to listen and have a conversation in good faith, but that has proved impossible.
So now I'm really hurt and really, really confused. I'm not going to just blindly trust a small group of hypocrites on the internet who claim they're worried about people's feelings while at the same time trying to completely villainize me as if I don't have feelings too. But I also understand that they might have a point. Sadly, politeness is not always correlated with correctness.
I absolutely do not want to continue running this gimmick blog if it's truly harmful and offensive to people. I've just never encountered this take before, and it was delivered with such vitriol that I had to take a break from tumblr entirely just to recover my sanity. So I'm hoping a much broader and less biased sample size will help to clear this up. I know an AITA poll isn't perfect, but it should do.
If I get a YTA verdict, I will delete the typo-correcting blog and stop immediately, no questions asked. If not, I'll know I just angered an extremely vocal minority that has no idea how to deal with conflict.
AITA?
What are these acronyms?

This is so egregious that I can’t let it stand, the large IWTV blog Nalyra-dreaming is liking posts about hating critical race theory and the post she liked states that affirmative action is the only systemically racist system still around while calling fans who are upset that they were called ableist slurs, anti-white and intellectually disabled. When people noticed this last night she attempted to block people who she knew saw the racist posts and remove her likes to hide this. But I saw them several times over, and so did many others.
Tumblr media
Also here's proof that Nalyra actively interacts with this user and on THEIR OWN BLOG and has at least allowed cosmicjoke to stand on the idea that anti-whiteness is real on her own blog.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm pretty sure Nalyra blocked me because I told CosmicJoke to not call people slurs and a reblog of the “antiwhite” meltdown they had with a bad-quality Walter White image. At least proving that she was looking at the post she liked.
No way on black history month did you think we wouldn’t check to see who liked and defended posts with “Affirmative action is the only current form of systemic racism”.
I saw her do this on several occasions over this week and simply asked others to check on people liking racist posts and reblogging my disdain for OP’s usage of slurs and antiblack dog whistles. I never implied that I was talking about her but these posts scared her enough to block me.
This is about the 3rd time I found them secretly liking genuinely racist treatment of fans she dislikes. This is a political stance, affirmative action, the belief in antiwhiteness, and critical race theory are not IWTV topics, this isn’t a whimsical like and scroll, these posts are all political stances that have nearly nothing to do with IWTV outside of what people were being targeted by the slurs in the first place. And the “what people” seem to be black fans that at some point in time she believes deserved to be attacked.
Targeting fans you don’t like doesn’t mean the speech should be endorsed. Anyone with half a pint of morals wouldn't be endorsing an actively hostile person slinging around altright talking points. And I will question why these posts are liked. Call us names all you like, but the second you start using the words of a reactionary racist who calls people disabled… maybe that should give you pause. Yeah?
A large IWTV blog believes in or at least is rubbing shoulders with an antiAffirmative action, slur slinging, reverse racism reactionary so that she can weaponize them against people she disagrees with.
At best Nalyra is okay with commenting, liking, and comforting racists in asks who she wields as weapons against people she disagrees with. At worst, Nalyra genuinely believes in antiwhiteness, antiAffirmative Action, and actively is okay with calling fans she dislikes slurs.
The racism on display here makes me sick. And it’s really telling how this blog feels comfortable patting these people on the back in comment sections.
Say it with your chest, but don’t mislead people who might disagree into following someone who believes this shit.
As respectfully as possible, you make my skin crawl and I’m tired of not stepping to what I really wanted to say. When I make posts about “check who likes what” never in my entire life did I expect to catch an account this large flagrantly using a racist reactionary in such a sad manner.
This is the last straw for me, you can’t keep liking explicitly racist posts and then answering their asks in private and hope fans you strategically discredit and already dislike don’t say anything.
1+1 is 2, liking and a post saying “I will call people I dislike slurs over fictional characters” can only be read so many ways.
I dislike a lot of people, I still wouldn’t defend and like a random fan’s ability to use SLURS and racist tactics on them. I wouldn’t do the same to you as you do to us.
Also some way to hide your attack dog… by having them flash in your own comment section and saying THIS
Tumblr media
Racism is a slur… you guys… and this person is not at all a danger to fandom spaces.

I have a bookstagram, and I recently followed someone because they posted about the overconsumption issue that most bookish social media seems to have. Today, though, they posted another controversial "opinion": that listening to audiobooks isn't reading, and people who claim to have read a bunch of books that they listened to as audiobooks are lying and/or deluded. Listening to audiobooks, she said, is just consuming books.
I disagreed in a fairly politely worded reply, and I intend to unfollow/block, because I find it unlikely this person will change their mind, especially since I'm far from the only person to point out that this is exclusionary and ableist. But this is tumblr/my house, and now I'm going to be as blunt as I want to be.
I'm a librarian and archivist. So much of the work I and others in my field do focuses on making books and reading more accessible and less exclusionary. It is, in fact, incredibly ableist to negate how important audiobooks are for people who have certain disabilities or challenges, and I would in no universe say they aren’t reading. For that matter, a busy person who only has time for audiobooks and for people who just prefer them--it still counts, as far as I'm concerned.
See, there's a difference between an audiobook and a podcast or long song or radio program. An audiobook is still a book--it was written with a particular narrative structure, and the author plays a defined but limited role (once the book is written, it's written; the author isn't tuning in next episode with comments and corrections based on what listeners said). An audiobook is a book, ergo, listening to one is reading. Using braille is reading, and listening to audiobooks is reading.
The part that has me in full Captain Raymond Holt "apparently that is a trigger for me" mode is that this bookstagrammer called listening to audiobooks consumption. In the context of her other posts about overconsumption as an issue in the bookish community (again, agree, but also...mind your own business), this seems particularly insidious to me. Conflating influencer-driven (and capitalist hellscape) consumption with listening to an audiobook (again, a massive boon for the visually impaired and those with disabilities like ADHD, dyslexia, etc.) is rude at best and dangerously exclusionary at worst. Stop letting comparison be the thief of joy; mind your own business and stop looking at the pages that bother you. Focus on the kindness of leaning towards inclusion, meeting people where they are, and leaving judgment behind.*
*This person also said "feel free to comment if you disagree but please don't be mean or judgmental," as if they hadn't just posted the most ableist and judgmental sludge I've seen today.
tl;dr: don’t be a gatekeeping shithead, mind your own business, and

There are many things wrong with this block of text. From saying autism has no downsides, to saying it makes you have more empathy so you’re trustworthy.
There are multiple things wrong with this so let’s break it down.
There ARE downsides of autism. As a higher support need’s individual, most days there’s more downsides then there are upsides. Yes, I wouldn’t have changed my autism (although some people would), yes, autism is sometimes great! But saying it has no downsides is downplaying the struggles that autistic people face, over and over again. From being assaulted, to ableist comments and treatments, to neglect and abuse, to support needs, to being killed. All of these are downsides of having autism and I’ve not even scratched the surface. You do NOT get to say that autism has no downsides.
The next thing, that autism makes you have more empathy. Are we forgetting about the people with no to low empathy? Are we forgetting about the autistics who experience no empathy due to their autism? Autism can make you hyper-empathic. But it can also make you Hypo-empathetic. There is no doubt about that.
Stop trying to erase that some people don’t experience the same things as you. Stop trying to downplay autism into this cutesy disorder. It’s not cool. Autism affects peoples lives, it makes their lives hard. It makes their lives miserable sometimes.
Autism has taken so much from me. From my ability to make friends, to my ability to effectively communicate. Autism HAS downsides and I can attest to that. Don’t erase the downsides.
