A friendly reminder that being okay with the physical & mental suffering of pregnant, already existing people as long as new people can be born is a very messed up view to have <3

Don't like the reason (why) a woman (would) chose abortion? Deal with it! Don't bother her. It's your problem. A woman doesn't own you a baby and all the sacrifice that comes with bearing them just because you don't think her reasons moral enough.

authors note : this work may be triggering for some, it does not hurt my feelings if you unfollow or choose not to read. i love you and i hope those who do read this enjoy/relate to this. this is an abortion related fic, brought on as a way for me to express my feelings about roe v wade being overturned.
Tumblr media
The air felt like hot coals sliding down your throat as you stared at the test in front of you. It was positive, there was no mistaking it. The revolution felt more violating than the conception, it had only been two weeks since the incident and now here you stood- two weeks pregnant with an assaulters baby.
“Oh fuck.” You choked out, body trembling under the stress. There was a life growing within you, one that made you gag at the very thought. What were you supposed to do? To think of having to raise the kid for 18 years, to see the face of the man that hurt you every single day made you want to throw up.
You stumbled out of the bathroom, heading directly to the landline. There was only one person you could call, one person who’d care. Your fingers trembled as you dialed the number, the line ringing as you waited an answer.
“Hello?”
You let out a deep sigh, the weight on your chest disappearing. “Hey.” Nancy was always good at answering the phone, even when Mike clogged up the lines.
“(Y/n)? What’s up?” She greeted, her chipper tone conveying through the phone. It was unusual to get Nancy in a bad mood, it was possible but pretty unlikely.
The words escaped you as you opened and closed your mouth like a fish out of water. Saying the whole situation out loud, and to someone else, made it feel much more real. If you didn’t tell her now, you could try to forget about it another day. Live just a little longer without those consequences.
“Hello? (Y/n)?”
“Yeah, yeah. Im still here.” You spouted, swallowing hard as you took a deep breath in. “Nancy, could you come over? If you’re not busy, of course.” You couldn’t bring yourself to tell her like this, the whole incident could warp your relationship with her forever. It was no secret, you liked Nancy. More than anything in the world, and this could really.. change things.
There was a silence at the end of the line, brief but definitely silent before she answered. “Oh yeah, sure. I can be there in..” She trailed off, probably to look at a nearby clock. “Let’s say 15 minutes.”
You felt your heart skip a beat, this really was happening- wasn’t it? “That sounds great, Nance. The door should be unlocked so just come up.” You moved a hand to rest on your abdomen, the sight making you feel ill. “I’ll see you soon, okay? Be safe.”
“I will, I’ll be over soon.” With that, she hung up.
The phone clicked back onto the base, cord curling around as you pushed it back into its crevice. There was nothing more to do now than wait. You just couldn’t seem to understand, of course you knew how this happened. It was a hard thing to try to forget. With it only being two weeks since, it felt very fresh emotionally. But that wasn’t your confusion, as you settled into the think pillows that rested on the head of the bed the only word that came to mind was ‘why?’
Why did this happen? To you of all people? It’s not as if you’d wish this on anyone but God it felt so cruel. Was this some kind of punishment for the feelings you’d been having? Being a homosexual was looked down upon, they even say it’s a sin in the Bible- but how can that be helped? How could you stop feeling the butterflies in your stomach when Nancy held you close. God, how could anyone? She was perfect. Even if being a homosexual was a sin, that would never warrant this. And if it did, God is a piece of shit.
The world was cruel, it wasn’t made for people like you. You were kind and genuine, you cared more about people you barely knew than you did about yourself. You’d dedicated years of your life to helping the poor, the sick, the needy. It all meant nothing, at least that’s how it feels. The sun shined through the window and plastered itself on the floral wallpaper that covered the entire room, creating a baby pink sheen of light haloing around the room. It almost made you feel better, it better meant you had stopped wanting to vomit.
A small knock was heard at the bedroom door before it creaked open to reveal Nancy, she was testing the waters as she entered. Eyes scanning the room for any indication of what was going on. “Hey, I let myself in like you said.” She hummed, closing the door behind her with a soft ‘click.’
“Thank you for coming, I really appreciate it.” You admitted, hands twiddling as you thought of ways to break the news to her. It wasn’t as if you wanted this or this was consensual. It was thrust upon you and now you just had to figure out what to do.
Her soft eyes met your own, leveling with you as she sat on the edge of the bed. Her baby skirt crinkled at the edge as she scooted in. “What’s going on, (Y/n)? It sounded urgent.” Her voice carried lightly, causing you to wince involuntarily.
The truth was bitter, but even bitter things must go down. “Nance, I’m pregnant.”
Nancy’s mouth fell into an ‘o’ as she took in those words, eyes reflecting what seemed like disappointment. “Wait, what? Are you sure? Who’s the father?” No, it wasn’t disappointment. It was worry.
“I’m very sure and the father.. it’s a long story.” You pushed the subject off, it wasn’t that relevant- right? “The test is still in the bathroom, it’s a very clear positive.”
The brunette squinted slightly at you, “(Y/n), what aren’t you telling me? Who’s baby is it?” Her voice became more stern, not stern as in drill Sargent but stern as in ‘tell me or so help me god I’ll figure it out myself.’
Your throat went dry, hands beginning to sweat. Images of the man who violated you that night flashed through your head, the feelings arose as if a wildfire had ignited in your chest. “It’s really…I don’t know how to explain this but I don’t know really who he is.” You began, “But it’s not the way you think. I didn’t just sleep with some random guy. I went to that party, you know the one that Joe threw?”
Nancy nodded, listening intently as you recited the story you had been dreading bringing to light.
“Well yeah, I had probably too many drinks. Steve and I played beer pong, then we raced each other at shots. But then, some guy started creeping on me. He was making me.. really uncomfortable. So, I went upstairs to freshen up.” Your stomach churned, the contents becoming dangerously close to your throat. “He followed me, and while I was fixing my skirt- he.. he did things..”
The silence was so thick you could cut it with a knife.
“Nancy, I… I tried to stop him. I tried to fight back. He was just relentless and so aggressive.” The tears came before you could even comprehend it, salty streams of regret from all the times you’d told yourself not to drink anymore. Every shot, every cup of beer. The taste of alcohol was the taste of rape now.
The girl had hopper across the bed to where you sat, arms wrapping around your frame. She pulled you into her chest, rocking you gently. “It’s okay, this wasn’t your fault. God, I’m so sorry.” Her voice cracked and she squeezed tighter, terrified to let go.
“I don’t know what to do, I can’t raise a baby. Let alone his baby. If I want to give it up for adoption, I have to carry it to term. Everyone will know what happened.” You gushed in a fit of panic, breaths coming out faster and faster as the moments passed.
Nancy pulled away to look into your eyes, holding you gaze. “Look at me, okay? Breathe. I will take care of you, honey. You have options.” She gently wiped the tears from your face, caressing you with the utmost care.
You nodded, trusting her. It was the most you could do. She seemed to know more than you could about this, which seemed impossible but you didn’t question it. “What options? I can keep it or I can give it up. I’m going to have to go through this pregnancy one way or another.” You pulled your knees up to your chin, refusing to even look at your abdomen.
“Well, actually, you have one more option. You can get an abortion. They can remove the whole fetus and you won’t have to go through all of that.” Her words felt like the final bell, the saving grace. Though, you didn’t fully understand.
You’d heard about abortion in passing but you never fully understood. “Isn’t that killing it? Fetuses can’t live outside of the womb.”
She nodded, “Yes. It will kill it. It’s not really a baby yet, so really all you’re doing is getting a sack of cells removed from your uterus. I know many lady’s who have had this done.” It was up in the air and to be honest, it was the best idea you’d heard in a long time.
“Does anyone have to know? Ever?” You shifted slightly, glancing around the room as if someone was peering in.
Nancy shook her head, hands moving to hold onto your own. “Your medical information in private and I would never tell a soul.”
Though, you knew this would weigh on your conscience- there was no other way. You were so young, you body wasn’t fit for this yet. This is what was best for you and the fetus. It’s life wouldn’t have been good, especially with a mother who could barely look at it without getting ill. You didn’t want to have a child, God, you were a child.
“Okay. I want to do it.”
The girls eyes softened, giving your hand a squeeze. “Are you sure you want to do this?” If there was one thing you loved about Nancy, it was the way she never judged you. No matter the circumstances, she never passed judgement on your choices, you really needed that. “I’ll be with you every step of the way.”
For once since the incident happened, there seemed to be a light at the end of the tunnel. With Nancy’s help, everything would be okay. Her love exceeded the hate that was implanted within you.

If a conservative Christian tries to hit you with, "What if Jesus had been aborted?!?!?" you gotta go full bible conspiracist on them.
Be like,
Well, ACTUALLY, Jesus WAS aborted TWICE, before his embryo was implanted in The Virgin Mary's womb.
These are the secret scriptures the Catholic church has been hiding in the Vatican. They don't want the public to know the truth about the failed Madonnas.

It's always hilarious to read fics where Isabelle, instead of having a miscarriage, has an abortion, and Aramis is super pissed and it is used as a proof for "look what a selfish bitch she is". My sister in the fandom, your fave grew up in a brothel. He is as pro-choice as it gets

One thing I haven't seen discussed in the abortion debate is the extreme difficulty of getting your tubes tied.
The sheer number of women told they need their husband's permission to do it, including hearing that if they're single, they need to FIND a husband and GET his permission
Women told they're not old enough in their 30s!
Women told that they'll change their minds, they'll regret it, blah blah.
Honestly, I think getting your tubes tied is potentially foolish and easily regrettable if you have time enough for your life to change significantly before menopause. Many women DO regret it. It isn't easily reversible. Etc etc etc.
But they're adults, they should be able to do what another adult thinks is an idiotic fuckup. They should be able to do it without a man's fucking permission, ESPECIALLY when men can get vasectomies any time they want. They should be able to do it without being over 35 before being considered adult enough.
I don't like it myself, but I'm not these women's mommy or their god, and I support their right to do any goddamn thing they want to themselves that isn't done out of actual insanity.

Before the roe vs wade dissolution: ectopic pregnancies not real! Doctors can't know when a egg is on the uterus wall like 99% of pregnancies thought history that were recorded and analyzed because...uh...THE EQUIPMENT yeah they don't have it! No we aren't gonna give funding just let women die like God intended!
After the dissolution: acshually the treatment is not called abortion! a fertile egg in development being taken out isn't abortion because uh is not in the right place! Well yeah I said life starts at conception but this different because I need better PR and words i don't like scare me

I think an awful lot of anti-abortion types do not in fact believe abortion is murder. (Some do, and that sucks for them. I’m completely serious about this btw, if you believed that whatever number of abortions are performed in whatever amount of time are actually child murders and most people just go about their life like no big, you’d go bugfuck insane over it too.) Rather, they pull out the idea of child murder as a rhetorical tool, because once “ok but is it murder or not?” is on the table, then talking about generational poverty and individual rights and the way becoming a mother fucks up a women’s lifetime earnings and so on, just seems petty and irrelevant in comparison. If they had to argue it on “but premarital sex is bad” grounds they’d get trounced; when they argue it on “murder” grounds they can stop open minded liberals from just tearing them to pieces. Because who wants to be insensitive about murder?
It’s the same thing with equating sex ed with grooming. As far as I can tell the people who come up with this nonsense don’t actually believe it (doesn’t mean other people don’t though, if nobody believed it it wouldn’t work.) But, when you’ve got accusations of pedophilia out there, some people are going to stop in confusion rather than rushing in to argue. It’s like getting sand thrown in your face.
(Same thing with associating gay people and pedophilia, same thing with the old school blood libel against Jewish people…you make an accusation that’s sufficiently heinous and even if it’s pulled out of thin air you can still get a lot of people to instantly stop thinking and only feel for a bit.)
Oh, I forgot to argue for why I think the “abortion is murder” argument is largely made up rather than a genuine belief. Logically, if life begins at conception and abortion is child murder, then it would follow that 1. miscarriage would also be child death, and should be treated like it (which does not happen, it is not typical for pregnant people who lose a baby to miscarriage early in the pregnancy to get the same level of sympathy and condolences as someone who’s had an actual already-born infant die (even when the pregnancy is wanted) although yes, it is treated as sad and unfortunate, and yes, when things go wrong in the worst possibly way late in the pregnancy that’s much more likely to be treated like losing a child, it’s almost like the beginning and end of a pregnancy aren’t the same thing) and 2. IVF would also be child murder, because IVF works by trying to fertilize more eggs than you actually need, and typically extra fertilized embryos that don’t get implanted just get thrown out. This is normal, and generally speaking anti-abortion types find some way to wiggle out of it being literally the same thing by “life begins at conception” standards. Because they’re in favor of IVF and against abortion — for reasons that are not in fact about child murder.
(That’s also why the #1 most reliable way to reduce abortions, promoting birth control and making it easily available, is almost always opposed by anti abortion people. Because it’s not about preventing child murder, that’s just a rhetorical tool.) (they also tend to be against the other reliable way to reduce abortions: the main reason people have abortions is they can’t afford a child, and part of that is about how solid government support is.)
Again, not saying that everyone who is against abortion is that way, but I think the most powerful ones are. The ones who are framing the debate.
One of the things that happens with framing the debate this way, is that even arguing against the anti-abortion “it’s murder” position undermines a pro-abortion position. Because you’re busy arguing with this ludicrous, asinine premise rather than talking about what’s really going on, which is that the rich and powerful and very very white — and very, very heartless — find it beneficial to them to have more babies around that need homes, and more wealth inequality, and more gender inequality, and more ways for those in power to exert control over those with less power.
On multiple levels. If you’re a boss and your employees can’t afford to lose their job because their kids will go hungry, that’s good for you. If you have a mistress who can only get an abortion if you arrange it for her, that’s also good for you. If you have a daughter who can’t have sex with someone you don’t like without risking ruining her life, you see where I’m going with this? And if you happen not to be able to have your own kids, and you’re a selfish asswipe who doesn’t care about anyone else’s wellbeing, it is in your interest to have a wide pool of of healthy infants (preferably with your skin color, usually) to adopt from. No matter what happens to the less healthy or a little too old or otherwise not easily adoptable ones. Just like if you’re an employer who doesn’t give a shit about anyone, you want a lot of prospective employees to choose from and you want them to not have too many options of their own, and if that means there’s a lot of unemployment and poverty-related suffering who cares, you got yours.
And if you want to cover up that that’s what you want? Make the other side out to be monsters.

This is exactly why they are bad stories to tell and bad ideas to promote. That is an inhuman mindset. If you get pregnant and can take care of the child and you abort because you didn't feel like it, you are a monster. You are taking advantage of an extreme power imbalance to minimize your own discomfort. You are objectively wrong to do so regardless of how long you have been told it's okay, that it's your right.
We don't need to promote more ideas that make people into monsters, corrupting our very souls.

I know a surprising amount of republicans who are actually in favor of Roe v. Wade bc they acknowledge (that while they don’t always approve of it) abortion is a vital medical procedure. It saves lives. My mother’s own church shocked me awhile back by saying they don’t believe a women or child should be forced to carry a product of rape bc God doesn’t want them to suffer that. I hope every republican who’s devastated by the overturning of Roe v. Wade knows that this loss of basic human rights IS ON THEM. Those with uteruses who die either in labor or some other pregnancy complication bc they were forced to put the “life” of a parasite that couldn’t survive without them before their own IS THEIR DOING. Anyone who dies from an unsafe abortion is just more blood ON THEIR HANDS. Every time you vote for someone who thinks life of a zygote is more important than the life of the person whom without it would never survive simply bc you agree with their other beliefs, YOU ARE SAYING YOU DON’T GIVE A DAMN ABOUT WOMENS RIGHTS. So if you’re sitting somewhere reading an article and thinking about how tragic it is that Roe v. Wade got overturned, just know that you’re hands are not clean. YOU HELPED THIS HAPPEN. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE. THERE IS BLOOD ON YOUR HANDS AND YOU SHOULD FEEL LIKE CRAP BC OF IT. Maybe you should think about about how much you value other peoples lives the next time you vote for someone who doesn’t give a damn about them.

I want to talk about something. I want to talk about ableism in fandom. And sexism in fandom. Oh, and racism in fandom.
Mostly though, I wanna talk about how the discussion about these things often gets derailed because people don't understand what trends and typical behaviors actually are.
Whenever a Person of Color, a woman, someone disabled, someone queer (or an intersection of any of these groups) points out that certain fandom trends are bigoted in some shape or form, half the replies seem to be "but they are my comfort character! Maybe people just like them better because they are more interesting!" or even "people are allowed to have headcanons!" - the very daft even go for a "don't bring politics into fandom" which is a personal favorite because nothing exists in a vacuum and nothing is truly apolitical. But alas~
What most of these replies seemingly fail to understand is something very, very simple: it's not about you.
You, as an individual, are just one datapoint in a fandom. You are not the trend. You do not necessarily depict the typical behavior.
When someone points out that there is racism in fandom, that doesn't mean every fan is racist or perpetuating racist ideas*. By constantly mentioning your own lack of racism, quite often, you are actively derailing the conversation away from the problems at hand.
When someone names and describes a trend, they don't mean your headcanon specifically - they mean the accumulated number of headcanons perpetuating a harmful or outdated idea.
I am not saying this to forbid anyone from writing fics about their favorite characters or to keep anyone from having fun headcanons and sharing their theories and thoughts - quite the opposite actually. A critique of a general trend is not a critique of you as an individual - and you're going to have a much better, and more productive, time online if you can internalize that. If you stop growing defensive and instead allow yourself to actually digest the message of what was pointed out.
I am saying this to encourage some critical thinking.
Allow me to offer up some examples:
Case 1: A DC blogger made the daring statement that maybe Tim and Jason were such a popular fanfic focus because they are the only two undeniably white batboys. Immediately someone replied saying "no, it's all the fun traumatic situations we can put them in!". Which is an insane statement to make, considering the same can be said for literally ANY OTHER DC Batman and Batfam character.
The original post wasn't anything groundbreaking, they didn't accuse anyone, didn't name any names... but immediately there was a justification, immediately there was a reason why people might like these characters more. No one stopped to take a second and reflect on the current trends in fanfiction, no one considered that maybe this wasn't a declaration against people who like these characters but a thesis depicting the OVERALL trend of fandom once again focusing on undeniably white (and male) characters.
(don't get me started on the racebending of white characters in media that has a big Cast of Color and the implications of that)
Case 2: A meta posted on Ao3 about ableism in the Criminal Minds fandom caught my attention. A wonderful piece, very thoughtful, analyzing certain characterization choices within the fandom through the lens of an actually autistic person. The conclusion they reached: the writing of Spencer Reid as an autistic character, while often charming and comforting, tended to be incredibly infantilizing and at worst downright ableist. They came to that conclusion while CLEARLY stating that the individual fanfic wasn't the problem, but the general fandom trend in depicting this character.
Once again, looking at the replies seemed to be a mistake: while many comments furthered the discussion, there were quite a few which completely missed the point. Some were downright hostile. Because how dare this author imply that THEY are ableist when they write their favorite character using that specific characterization.
It didn't matter that the author allowed room for personal interpretation. It didn't matter that they noted something concerning about the entire fandom - people still thought they were attacking singular people.
Case 3: I wrote a fic about abortion in the FMA(b) fandom (actually I've written a weird amount of fics about abortion in a lot of fandoms, but alas) and I got hate comments for it. Because of that I addressed the bias in fandom against pro-choice depictions of pregnancies. I pointed out that the utter lack of abortion in many omegaverse stories or even mpreg or het romances, painted the picture of an unconscious bias that hurt people for whom abortion was the only option, the best possible ending. The response on the post itself was mostly positive, but I got anon hate.
(which I can unfortunately not show you since I deleted it in the months since)
And I'm not overly broken up about it, but it also underlines my point: by pointing at a general problem, a typical behavior, a larger trend... people feel personally attacked.
This inability to discuss sexism, ableism, racism, transphobia, etc in fandom without people turning defensive and hurt... well, it damages our ability to have these conversations at all.
Earlier I said YOU are not the problem - well, i think part of this discussion is acknowledging that: sometimes YOU are in fact part of the problem. And that's not the end of the world. But you can only recognize yourself as a cog in the machine, if you can examine your own actions, your own biases, your own preferences critically and without becoming defensive.
And, again, this is not to keep you from finding comfort in your favorite characters and headcanons. This is also not to say that I am free of biases and internalized bigotries - I am also very much a part of the system. A part of the problem.
This is so you can comfortably ask yourself "but why is there no abortion in this universe?" or "why are my favorite black characters always the top in my slash ships?" or "why do I write this disabled character as childish and in need of help?" - and sometimes the answer is "because I am disabled and I want comfort", and that's fine too.
There is no one shoe fits all in fiction. There is not a single trope that captures all members of a group. There is no single stereotype that isn't also someone's comfort. No group is a monolith, no experienced all-encompasing (or entirely unique).
There is never a simple answer.
But that doesn't mean you should stop questioning your own biases, your own ideals.
Especially, if you grow defensive if someone points out that a certain trend you engage in might be racist. Or sexist. Or queerphobic. Or fucking ableist.
*this does not mean negate the general anti-blackness perpetuated by most cultures as a result of colonialism and slavery
