"So what's his damage," Soap whispers to him as he's floating above Ghost's sleeping form, in the plane on their way to Mexico.
Roach snorts. "Would be faster to tell you what's not broken, honestly. Though I guess his fiancé dying on him was probably the final straw, what convinced him to just... Close off, I guess."
Soap's face contorts in earnest empathy. "Ah shit, sorry," he says. "Did ye know them well?"
Roach just stares at him. From the little he's seen of him in the field, he's extremely competent, smart and resourceful. He's also apparently quite dumb. He's lucky that's exactly the kind of person Roach likes.
He sees the exact moment the realisation hits him, his pretty blue eyes going wide. "Oh, you're the- okay, damn, sorry man."
Roach chuckles. "You should have said 'that's rough, buddy'. It's been five years, I've accepted my fate. I'd just... Like for him to do the same."
Soap hums. "It's a complicated issue," he whispers. "But I have to say, most ghosts that haunt their partners like it better when they haven't moved on."
"Why would I want that," Roach frowns. "I want him to be happy. I want him to have friends. I want him to live his life."
Soap smiles.
"I'll have ye know I'm trying really hard to be his friend," he says.
"Don't take it personally when he treats you like an arsehole, it's on purpose, to make you flee and allow him to keep wallowing in his misery."
Soap nods. "Thanks for the tip."
"... You really mean it? You really wanna be his friend?"
Roach finds out right now and then that Soap's smile holds the power of the fucking sun.
"Yeah! He seems really cool and I love making friends."
That's a golden retriever in human form, Roach is sure of it now. A really pretty human form as well. Anyway-
"He's also really hot under his mask." Why did he say that?? Roach tries really hard not to facepalm. The man just met them, it doesn't matter if he knows he's Simon's type (and his), he just wants to be friends, what is he doing... He doesn't even know if he likes men! He can only blame that on the five years he spent without social interaction.
Not that he was that good at social interaction when he was alive, but that's not the point.
Soap sputters for a few seconds, cheeks pinker. That's... Interesting. Damn, he really has a one track mind sometimes...
"Hum, guid tae knaw," Soap says finally, his accent thicker. Is he that flustered? Does that mean Simon has his chances?
If someone had told him years ago that he would be flirting with a co-worker, as a ghost, on behalf of his unaware still living fiancé, he'd have laughed probably.

Tiny something about accidental necromancer Soap and ghost Roach au :
Ghost catching Soap playing rock paper scissors by himself, with one hand, and gets physically slapped by the memories of Roach playing that game by himself. He goes straight to Price's office to cry.
Meanwhile Roach is cackling because he's been winning non stop and Soap is bad at getting in his opponent's head.
And Soap is distracted because he's pretty sure Roach is flirting with him on purpose to make him lose, because why else would he be flirting with him?

"I can't call Soap 'Johnny'," Alejandro grunts, an obvious smile in his voice.
"Don't," Soap answers immediately. "Only Ghost can pull that off."
Roach lifts an eyebrow. "And what am I supposed to call you then? Johnuald the third?"
Soap snorts, quietly enough that the others don't hear him, and sends him a look. Even in the dark, it's very obvious how much of a sunshine he is, his blue eyes sparkling with mirth.
Damn, Roach had never fallen for someone this fast before. Even with Simon, it had taken a few months. But for some reason, Johnny is so precious to him that he'd die - again - for him in a heartbeat.
"Jonathon? Jonah? Johnson? Johntay? I can keep going, I already had that conversation with Price years ago, and I had the internet back then. I had a pretty long list and I remember most of it."
"Cannae ye make yerself useful instead of bein a nuisance?" Soap whispers with a smile after quickly checking around that no one was paying him attention.
Roach gasps. "But being a nuisance is my true calling! You could say I like 'bugging' people, huh, get it, get it?" He beams when Soap shakes his head at him and goes through the wall.
The shadows are crawling outside, of course. He roams around, getting a rough headcount, then gets back at Soap with all the information. It's doable, honestly. Especially since Simon and him rigged several cars with explosives.
He is still a bit worried though, about Johnny's wound. He's not sure how it's possible, how he's still standing, but then again, he's a ghost talking to a living person, so there's that.
Rudy had said that no one except Alejandro can kill Alejandro, and Roach just has to wonder if Johnny got kind of the same deal. But Ale never gave any indication that he was seeing the burning person floating above his new friends, so maybe it's not the same.
With the clear intel he gives Soap, they make quick work of the Shadows and Price picks them up at the wall. If he was able to actually haunt people and not just follow them around uselessly, he'd stop haunting the Captain immediately as a thanks.
Because he's pretty sure Johnny actually needs some intense medical attention. He said that it didn't feel different than a leg or shoulder wound, but those definitely need more than just stitches and painkillers anyway.
It's very heartwarming, watching Soap greet the rest of the team with a puppyish energy, and he has to admit that it is kind of funny seeing Gaz and Price's faces when they notice the bullet hole in the front of his shirt.
The sight of Simon helping Johnny move along with a hand on the small of his back leaves him with mixed feelings.
There's the "I knew it!! I told you so!!" that he was expecting, of course, because he's always right and he did know it would happen. But there's also a pinch in his chest that he hadn't really expected. It's a feeling that he hadn't really felt since a really long time, since he was a teenager, probably.
Jealousy.
He hates it, he's always hated it. But the worst is he doesn't even know who he's jealous of. Perhaps he's finally remembering that he's dead and they're not, that all this flirting he's been doing with Johnny wouldn't have led to anything.
The grown arse sunshine of a man turns his head back, looking slightly confused, looking for him. When his eyes land on him, he beams so hard that it actually illuminates his whole face and Roach can't do anything except gravitate towards him like a moth to a light.
Wrong bug, he snorts internally.
"What's with you, smiley face?" he hears Simon ask when he gets closer.
Johnny is still looking straight at him, his smile getting softer. "Nothing," he answers, his gaze burning Roach more than the fire had. "Just glad you're here and glad we're leaving."

"Yeah, they're definitely fucking. Or they want to at the very least. "
Soap sends him an incredulous look.
"Come on," Roach continues, "it's so obvious. Look at Alejandro's eyes when Rodolfo speaks, he's head over heels for the man."
"You really think so? I mean I've noticed Rudy looking at Ale like he's his soul, but ye think it's reciprocated?"
"Well, ok, I don't know if they know it, but it's definitely mutual. You have to trust me, I'm a genius in relationships."
Soap laughs at him, walking down the street, Roach walking beside him, though he doesn't touch the ground.
"You're definitely not that smart, you're trying to convince me your fiancé finds me hot."
Roach huffs. "I know he does!"
"I'm pretty sure he thinks I'm an annoying little fucker."
"Well, yeah, but an attractive annoying little fucker!"
Soap laughs. The villa is almost in view and he slows down, looking apprehensive.
"What, your brain finally caught up with your mouth? You finally realised you offered your head on a platter?" Roach teases, which makes Soap swat at him instinctively. Of course, it goes right through him.
"Shut up," Soap mumbles. "It's just..."
He sees him reach in his pocket and pick at the Shadow Company's insignia anxiously.
"It's probably nothing." He shoves the insignia back in his pocket, starts walking again.
"It's obviously something," Roach protests. "Tell me, it's not like I can tell anyone else!"
"There's something... wrong, with Graves," Soap finally says. "I feel... I don't know, heavy, like weighted down around him. Like I said, it's probably nothing. Probably psychological, cause I only see him when there's something wrong."
Roach hums, gaining some height to quickly check on where he knows Simon and Graves are hunkered down, waiting for Soap to enter their LT's scope. He can't really see them, which he supposes is kinda the point.
"Maybe it is psychological," he says as he floats back down. "But you're also the guy who sees ghosts, so maybe it's actually a thing."
Soap sighs. They turn a corner and he knows Simon now has visuals, but it also means the guards do too. He watches as Soap lifts his hands above his head.
"It's the same feeling as right now," he quickly whispers as the guards approach with their weapons trained on him.
"Let's make a deal, you come out of here alive and we look more into it."
Soap snorts. "Deal."

"Fucking hell..."
Roach rolls his eyes at that, barely hearing Simon answering Shepherd. What was wrong this time, was the new guy too friendly? Too energetic? Was he not dead inside enough for Simon's tastes? He swears, sometimes this man infuriates him. Four years. He's been dead for four years and he's still mourning like day one.
Which wouldn't be such an issue if he didn't isolate himself to do so. He's not talking to anyone these days, barely talks with Price even. Certainly not to a therapist.
"You could show some manners," Roach complains out loud, knowing that the only person that would hear him was the man standing a bit further away with a big hole in the middle of the chest. If he even knew english.
"Oh, sorry," the new guy answers.
"What?" Simon grunts next to him.
Roach frowns. He had been so lost in his thoughts he had missed the first part of the conversation. Who was the new guy talking to?
"Uh," the man - what was his name again? Soap? - says, sending a confused look towards -
Roach turns around, trying to see what Soap was looking at, looking through him like that. There's nothing behind him, though.
"I... was saying sorry because I thought I stepped on your foot."
Simon hums and lets his bored look linger on Soap. Roach would've taken that answer as the truth if not for the fact that the man keeps sending little looks in his direction.
Can he... can he see him? He shoves back down the gigantic wave of hope that almost overwhelms him.
"Nod if you can hear me," he tries with a little voice.
Soap... nods, he nods! He's nodding, he's pretty sure it can't be interpreted as anything else. He gapes, forgets to breathe. It's not like he needs it, but he always liked to keep the habit. Made him feel more like himself.
"Bounce your leg twice if you can see me..."
The leg bounces twice. Roach has no idea what to say. No idea how to react. He can feel his burned side starting to smoke again.
"Are you dead too?" he finally asks, trying to make sense of it all.
Soap shakes his head no.
"What? But how..." how can he see him then?
Soap shrugs slightly. He... doesn't know? What? But that's not a satisfying answer at all, what the fuck? He frowns and Soap smiles apologetically in response.

Guys imagine, Roach died, before the creation of 141, but Soap is able to see his ghost. He was originally following Ghost around, really annoyed that he was using his death as an excuse to not get close to anyone, but when he found out Soap could see him and talk to him he started following him around instead.
And they get really close, like two peas in a pod, except they have to be discreet about it because no one else can see or hear Roach, and they'd think Soap was crazy if they saw him talking to no one.
They use that for shenanigans too: Roach will go follow someone else and report back to Soap, Gaz is genuinely starting to believe Soap has superpowers or something. It's really useful on missions as well, and Soap managed to successfully rescue team members thanks to Roach being able to move through walls and everything.
(Roach is not the only ghost Soap is able to see btw, just the only one he's talking to.)
And then Roach is witnessing his past lover trying really hard to not fall in love with Soap, and Soap trying really hard to not do anything about the love he already feels, and he has to try and convince Soap that he is dead. During that conversation he finds out that something else that keeps Soap from doing something is that he feels very confused about everything because he also has feeling for Roach.
So now Roach has to try and convince him that even if he was still alive he wouldn't have a problem with that. He's known for a while that he was polyamorous, but he hadn't really dared talking to Ghost about that because he thinks he's jealous and possessive.
And Soap is like "oh yeah, you want me to go say to Ghost 'don't worry about your dead lover that I'm not supposed to know, he's actually polyamorous and also in love with me, I know because his ghost told me!' ??? I'm sure he's gonna take that well!"
But Roach is nothing if not resourceful and he manages to put Soap in situations where he's forced to interact with Ghost, and eventually they kiss and their relationship is beginning to be something. They're not really sure what.
And Roach is sad, because he has to watch the two men he loves being in love without him, yes, but at least they're both happy, and it makes him feel a bit better. And then during a mission Ghost almost dies.
Because he was alone and Soap and Gaz were together, Roach was following Ghost this time, ready to fly to Soap in an instant if there was any problems. But there was and he didn't have time, so he instinctively grabbed the gun being pointed towards Ghost's head and moved it as the person was shooting, saving Ghost's life, giving him enough time to shoot the enemy himself.
But even as the threat is eliminated, Ghost is still looking up from where he's on the ground, staring right through him, looking shocked. No, not right through him, he realises when he moves to the side and Ghost's eyes follow him. He also realises that he grabbed the gun. He's never grabbed anything before, in all his years of being a ghost.
Then suddenly Ghost's eyes move wildly around, and he figures he disappeared from his view. He can still go through the walls, but he's kept the ability to grab stuff when he wants. It gives him a ton of new possibilities, to fuck with people and, of course, to touch Soap.
"I wish you were actually alive," Soap whispers to him, holding his hands against his face as he's falling asleep.
"What the fuck," comes Ghost's voice the next morning, waking both of them up - wait, since when could Roach sleep?
Soap doesn't understand immediately, because he's always been able to see Roach. But Ghost is standing in the door, looking straight at dead past lover.
Turns out Soap is a necromancer and he had no idea, though the whole 'I can see dead people' should probably have told him sooner that he wasn't normal... The more he wishes Roach is alive, the more he actually is. And they all end up happy and together. And Gaz is very happy to have won the bet that Soap indeed has superpowers.
The day Roach says, in a wondering voice, "I... I think I'm hungry" is the day they understand that something is really happening and he's actually coming back to life.
(Also, Soap has no control at all on his abilities, he has no idea what does what and why, he knows nothing. No one knows.)

More ghost! Roach - Accidental Necromancer Soap AU : little moments
141 in the middle of a briefing, when suddenly Soap gasps, interrupting Price. Everyone turns to look at him and he looks back like a deer in headlights, apologises with a stammered excuse, something like he saw a spider or something, and the meeting continues with dubious looks.
"You're so bad at that," Roach giggles from where he's floating around above the table. "It wasn't even that big of a news, they were flirting for months! I have way worse, you know one of the Corporals under your command, the redhead one? She's been secretely married for years to the medic lady that stitched you up last week! Stop gaping at me, where's your pokerface oh my god-"
And then Soap uses all that information to win bets against Gaz.
Or also, Roach telling jokes while there's people around Soap. "Don't laugh," he taunts him. "Don't even smile or they'll know you're crazier than they think."
And then he tells the worst joke ever and Soap can't help the snort that escapes him and again, everyone turns to look at him.
"I can't believe you're laughing in a room full of explosives tied to people," Roach gasps, knowing full well that's exactly the result he wanted.
Soap rolls his eyes at him quickly and focuses back on defusing. He'll get him back when they're alone and he doesn't look weird talking to the air.
"He knows you find him hot, he's neither blind nor stupid," Roach says, peeking above Ghost's shoulder. "If you want him to blush you need to call him 'pretty'. Worked every time..."
And he's right. When Soap tells Ghost he's a bonnie lad, explains what it means, it's very obvious how flustered he becomes, and the visible part of the bridge of his nose gets very red.
"Be ready to be grabbed at every opportunity, his love language is physical touch but he'd rather die than admit it."
Roach has a bit of a poltergeist moment when he finds out he can touch things again. Cups go flying into walls, chairs move around, shoes disappear. Roach is very overwhelmed and gets non verbal, which is a bit hard because Soap only knows the basics of BSL and has to ask Ghost to translate by copying live what Roach is saying. (Ghost, who has seen the ghost of his dead lover save his life just a day before objects started flying, recognising in the back of his mind the quirks of Roach's way of signing being reproduced by Soap, but not willing to believe yet)
It lasts a few days and the whole base is convinced they're haunted by a ghost. They're not wrong, Soap wants to say. And not only one, but the others are far more apathetic, barely there.
Then Roach calms down, all at once, when he realises that maybe... maybe he can touch people too. He's very nervous. It's been years since he touched someone, years of his hand going through Ghost's arm as he tried to make him see him. Years of not feeling the warmth of a living being.
That scares him. What if he can touch Soap, but he doesn't feel anything? What if it feels the same as the glasses he's been trying to juggle for days?
So he waits until Soap is asleep and he holds out his finger, slowly, hands trembling, and presses it softly to Soap's forehead. He's... He's warm, he realises with a gasp. He's warm!
Soap wakes up to sobbing and soft fingers on his cheeks and in his hair. He gets reassured very quickly that it's happy sobbing and Roach kisses him.
Ghost, after learning about the ghosts existence, starts having really bad nightmares every night. Has to be reassured that no, he's not actually a ghost. He hasn't actually died in that grave, he's here, he's warm and he's alive and loved.

"What if I fade?"
Soap lifts his head from his journal, looking up at Roach who is eerily floating near the ceiling. The slow movements almost make him look like he's in water. Kind of ironic given the way he died.
"What do you mean?" he asks, confused.
"What if I move on, what if I disappear," Roach elaborates, refusing to meet his eye. "Not everyone is a ghost, right? We'd be overly crowded. The fact that we're not also means that not every ghost stays."
Soap forces his dry throat to swallow. He honestly didn't want to think about that. He still needs Roach, he probably always will, but he hasn't even told him that he - he takes a deep breath in to calm himself.
"I don't know how it works," he admits quietly, bouncing his leg absent-mindedly. "You're probably right, like most of the time. Even if I really want you to be wrong about that."
Roach finally looks towards him.
"Maybe I should move on," Roach whispers. "It's not healthy, Johnny. You have no idea the things I want, what I wish for, that I'll never get."
Soap doesn't stand up, just keeps staring into Roach's eyes.
"I think I might have an idea, actually," he whispers back. Roach flounders for a moment. Soap really wishes he didn't get that wrong. He's pretty sure Roach meant that he can't have Ghost, and he himself can't have Roach. So... It's pretty similar.
"I've been feeling less like myself recently," Roach insists, deciding to ignore that comment for now. "I find myself wishing one of you would die so I wouldn't be alone. I never thought like that before, I fear that I may have stayed too long, that I'm starting to lose myself."
And he looks scared. It's written on his features so clearly and it breaks Soap's heart.
"You're not alone," he swears. "I'm here with you, and I'll make sure you stay you, however I can."
Roach looks at him, examining his face, looking for... something. Whatever it is, he seems to have found it because he exhales through his nose like a very soft laugh and averts his eyes, almost... blushing? It's a bit hard to tell from the distance and his left cheek being covered in burns while his right is covered in freckles, but he's pretty sure his ears are red.
"You can't look at me like that, Johnny," he says almost coyly. "I can't do anything about it, it's not fair."
Soap's face is burning and his eyes are wide. Was he too obvious? Did Roach understand or is he joking?
They probably look stupid, both of them redder than a fire truck, avoiding the other's eyes, regretting their words. Or at least he supposes that it's what's happening, because he's sure not looking up.
"If it makes you feel better," Roach finally says, sounding like he's smiling, "you were right for once : I am right most of the time. Judging by your reaction, you did indeed have no idea what I want."

Soap has been shot.
He's been shot and it's bad. Roach can't do anything but encourage him to keep putting one foot in front of the other. Soap's feeling around Graves had been trustworthy then.
Roach is having a hard time processing what happened, and he can only assume it's worse for those actually living through it.
He doesn't know where Ghost is, if he's okay, if he's alive. He can't go find him to make sure, since he has no idea where to look. He has to focus on Johnny, who's here, who's hurt. He has to do his best to keep him alive.
Soap really needs to tend to that wound, but he needs to find some supplies to do that, and somewhere safe. With the Shadows roaming the streets of Las Almas like a pack of murderous dogs, it's a bit harder than he'd like.
He sends another look to Johnny. He's stumbling, way too pale. He lost too much blood.
He risks a look further down. His shirt is soaked with blood. He wants to keep encouraging him, but his throat is too tight for the words to come out. The hole, slightly to the left side, in the middle of his chest, is haunting him.
Kind of ironic given he's the one supposed to do the haunting.
Honestly, he has no idea how Soap even managed to walk that long. He should be dead. Maybe he is, actually. Maybe his body is still lying back there under the Shadow's body, and it's only his ghost that's walking with him. That would explain a lot of things.
But not Simon's voice on the radio answering his call. That doesn't make sense. He has to be still alive then.
"There," he says, pointing at what appears to be a crafts shop. "There has to be sewing material and fabric to use as bandages."
"You want me to sew myself back together?" Soap croaks out, wheezing. Whether or not it touched the heart, the bullet definitely got his lung.
"You're losing too much blood, Johnny. You have no choice."
Soap tiredly nods his head, quietly heading to the store.
"I should be dead," he says simply as he's looking for supplies.
"Don't worry about that," Roach cuts him off. He really doesn't need to think about that. What if it's only adrenaline keeping him alive?
"Maybe it just hasn't caught up yet," Soap continues, ignoring him. "I feel tired."
"That's just the blood loss," Roach stresses out, still frantically looking for something to replace a chirurgical sewing needle.
"I think I'm in shock," Soap says. "I've been shot straight in the chest, and it doesn't feel any different than that time I got shot in the leg two years ago... I don't... I don't actually feel like I'm dying, you know what I mean?"
Roach looks at him. He still looks way too white, and slightly feverish, and exhausted, but his eyes are clear and he's still awake.
"I'm starting to think that whatever you 'feel' is always true, to be honest. You were right with Graves."
Soap sends a tired grin his way. "You think I have superpowers?"
"Mate, you can see ghosts, I was assuming you knew you had superpowers already."
By some miracle, and after an hour and a half of Simon and Johnny flirting on the comms, they're finally reunited and on their way to the safehouse. To say Simon is shocked when he sees the wound would be an understatement.
And somehow, Johnny is still standing. As if a bullet to the heart was barely more than a bullet to an extremity, as if there wasn't any vital organ beneath the skin there.

"Are you busy right now?"
Gaz lifts his head towards Soap, a curious look on his face. "Wow, that's the first time you actually ask me before kidnapping me, actually yes, I'm-"
"Perfect, come here I need your help."
Roach snorts as he watches Gaz's exasperated face as Soap grabs his arm and pulls him up, pushing him towards his room.
"Yeah, that was too good to be true, should've known," Gaz grumbles.
"No, no, no, you'll see, it's way more interesting that whatever you were doing, I swear!" Soap beams back at him, overflowing with energy. He's so excited that he slams his door closed behind Gaz, not noticing that Roach wasn't in yet.
Five years. He's been dead for five years but he still flinches when things rush his way, as if they were gonna hit him. "Rude," he complains as he walks through the door, shaking his head at Soap's apologetic look. He can't be mad at him though, not when he's behaving like an excited puppy.
"What the fuck happened-" Gaz gasps at the state of the room. There's tinkering material everywhere, hardware on all surfaces, and strange objects scattered around.
"Oh, I'm building my own ghost communication equipment, that's why I need you. You need to tell me if it works!"
"And you couldn't see if it works yourself?"
Roach actually laughs at that. Johnny hesitates, mouth gaping as he tries to find a reason.
"No, I get paranoid, I need a second opinion."
"Not bad, not bad," Roach grins.
"Ok," Soap continues, ignoring him. "Here's a spirit box I made, try it and tell me what you hear."
Gaz takes the offered radio and turns it around in his hands. "Shouldn't we be in a haunted house or something?"
Soap throws a look towards Roach. "Nah, i'm sure it's fine, try it."
"So you don't want to go to a haunted house?"
That could be really interesting, actually. Roach had always wanted to go ghost hunting, but he hadn't been able to convince Simon to come with him. He looks at Soap expectantly. It wouldn't be the same experience now that he's the ghost, but it's probably still gonna be interesting! Perhaps even more if he's the one being hunted.
"You really want to go to a haunted house that bad?" Soap asks.
"Yes," Gaz and Roach both answer at the same time.
Soap playfully rolls his eyes. "Ok, try the equipment first, to see if it works, and then we can look up some place to go if you really want."
They cheer, under Soap's amused eyes, then Gaz turns the radio on.
"Are there any spirits here?"
"Yup," Roach answers.
"Maybe try it with a little more enthusiasm," Soap says, looking at Roach.
"Oh, sorry," Gaz rolls his eyes. "Ooh~ spirits of the underworld, can one of you esteemed beings show their presence by speaking out~ how's that for enthusiasm?"
Roach snickers. "Yes, there is an esteemed being here indeed, and that is me, I'm here, hi."
Gaz jumps. "It said here!! It said! You're not pulling my leg, are you? You didn't record this shit, right??"
Soap and Roach gasp. It works! It has to, he said here and Gaz heard it!!
(spooky sad stuff under the cut)
Needless to say, they almost immediately head to the closest haunted place they can find on the internet. Roach is flabbergasted when Soap drags Simon and Price behind him, happily chattering away with Gaz. They don't exactly look thrilled to be here, but they're here! To be fair, he had only asked Simon in the past, he had never tried not giving him a choice.
It's funny in the beginning. The guide tells them the building's story, something about a criminal fire in the 1890's killing a man's whole family while he was away on business, then he came back and killed himself on the ruins, allegedly from guilt at having been responsible for the fire in some way, Roach didn't understand the reasoning, but okay.
Then the house's debris got covered up by the construction of another building, who had welcomed injured soldiers after WW1, many more people died here, stories about nurses and patients seeing figures in the corridors, children coughing, yadda yadda, very usual stuff.
The building is creepy, that's for sure, but there's no sign of any of the ghosts the guide had told them about. There is one soldier, who looks to be about 40, with his face disfigured, but he isn't active at all, barely follows them with his eyes, and doesn't say a single word. Doesn't even blink when the rest of the ghost hunting equipment beeps in his face. Probably got used to it, the poor man.
Roach is having a great time though. He makes everything go off at the most spooky times, says criptic shit in the spirit box. He's absolutely delighted when even Simon, stoic non believer Simon, starts hanging closer to Johnny, in what he knows is a silent request for touch. He says that to the only one that can actually hear him, and smiles at them when Johnny offers to hold Simon's hand.
It's all fun and games until they head to the basement, that the guide had said was the old house's foundations, and Johnny freezes up.
Roach is confused. There isn't anything here, no ghosts, no interactions, nothing.
"I… I don't feel good," Johnny says and Roach believes him, it's so obvious on his face that he's telling the truth.
"You're cold," Simon frowns, reaching his other hand to brush against Johnny's cheek.
Roach feels… weak. He feels tired. He hasn't had to sleep since his death, and it's like it's catching up to him. It feels draining. Something is wrong, but there's nothing around them still.
A child's voice rises from the radio in Gaz's hands. "I was like you," they whisper hauntingly.
"I don't know, man," Gaz says. "They said 'like' but for some reason I don't think I like that they like us."
"It's not what they said," Johnny whispers, still frozen in place, not even blinking, crushing Simon's fingers in his.
Price grabs his shoulder reassuringly, doing the same to Gaz with his other hand when he huddles closer. Roach tries to shake himself awake.
"Show yourself!" He tries to yell, commanding whatever ghost was playing with them to stop, but it only comes out as barely louder than a whisper. The only answer he gets is the sound of a child desperately coughing, flashes of heat, smells of burning flesh, smoke everywhere. He gasps, the flashes melting into his own memories, the gunshot, fire all around, Simon, Simon, Simon-
"I don't need you to talk, ghost," the child's voice is harder, dismissive, and the flashes suddenly stop. He falls back, panting, trying to catch his breath. "I just need your energy."
"Did they say Ghost?" Simon squeaks out.
"We need to leave," Johnny says urgently, pulling on Simon's hand.
"Don't leave," the child continues. "Talk with me. You need to know."
"Know what?" Price asks. Roach had almost forgotten the others didn't hear the entire conversation.
The child just ignores the question. "This is what happens when we die," they murmur. "This is what we become. But it's not the end."
A hand grabs Roach's arm and he jumps, his head swivelling wildly. It's the soldier from earlier. He looks panicked.
"You shouldn't be here," he says, arm extended far in front of him, apparently refusing to step off the stairs.
Roach sends a look towards Johnny. There are tears on his face and his whole body is shivering. Simon seems to be trying to get him to move back, but it seems like he's stuck in place.
"It's not the end?" Johnny whispers.
The child laughs. "It's not. We can't die, remember? But our body can disappear." The soldier drags Roach out of the basement, and he feels better as soon as he's on the first step of the staircase.
"Johnny!" He yells, trying to get his attention.
"There was nothing left after the fire," the child keeps going, their voice taking a melancholic tone. "I was so weak, but I could still see my siblings, roaming above the ruins. It was the only way to gain some strength back. They wouldn't have been happy anyway."
Roach thinks he's crying as well. He yells again, feeling absolutely useless as the only person who can hear him doesn't move.
"I can't move him!" Simon says, distressed. Price and Gaz immediately join him in trying to push Johnny back.
"But I don't need to feed on ghosts anymore," the child continues. "After all this time, someone like me comes here. I'm sorry. I hope you won't have to wait for so long. You end up losing yourself, little by little… Tell you what, if you don't fight me, I'll search for someone like us myself, to let you find a new body."
"Grab his legs," Price orders, pushing Johnny back into Gaz's arms. It looks hard, but they eventually get him off the ground and rush to the staircase.
"NO!" The child yells, all pressure suddenly dropping like a balloon popping once Johnny is out of the room.
Johnny gasps and seems to come back to life, thrashing in his friends' arms.
"Leave," the soldier says again, grabbing Roach's arm tighter for a second. "Never come back."
Roach quickly nods, tears incessantly falling from his eyes, unable to find his voice. The soldier pats his shoulder and slowly goes back up the stairs, heading back to his original spot. Johnny is sobbing in Simon's arms. They really need to get out of here.
The car ride back is silent. Johnny is lying down on the back seat, curled up, his head in Simon's lap.
"I don't want to become that," he whispers, tears catching on his lashes.
Roach, squeezed between the front seat and the back seat, in front of Johnny's face, shakes his head. He wants to say something, wants to tell him that he won't, but his voice hasn't returned. He tries BSL, not really knowing how much Johnny actually knows. It seems to be enough, because his exhausted eyes close and he seems to finally fall asleep.
Back on base, Simon carries him to bed and sits next to him for a few minutes. He looks shaken. He takes off his mask and beanie, that he uses instead of the balaclava when in civilian clothing, and rubs his hair, sighing. Roach wants to gather him in his arms and comfort him, kiss his hair, rub his shoulders. He also really really wants him to do that for him. He still feels small after that experience.
"I…" Simon says quietly, his voice breaking hesitatingly. "I don't know what to believe." He speaks quietly, apparently not wanting to wake Johnny up. Roach is confused - Simon had never been in the habit of talking to himself - but he just keeps listening. He's always liked to listen to Simon talk.
"This was too real. But if this was real…" His eyes are red. "Then what I saw was also real…" He sniffs, blinks out the tears building up, breaking Roach's heart. "So… Roach… Bug…" his voice breaks on his nickname and Roach starts crying. "If you're actually still here, I don't know what to do. I don't know, Bug. Can you, maybe, give me a sign? That you're here?"
Roach sobs. He loves him so much. He wants a hug. He wants to be held so badly. He folds in on himself in despair, trying to comfort himself, not noticing Johnny's open eyes.
"He loves you," Johnny murmurs, making Simon jump to wipe his tears before turning around to look at him. "He loves you so much. I wish he could tell you himself."
Simon sniffs, lays down beside Johnny and gathers him in his arms, practically squishing him against his chest. "Thank you," he whispers against his hair.
Johnny still looks really out of it, barely awake. His eyes rest on Roach's crying form and the ghost signs his own thanks. They really need to look into this. He can't let their Johnny become this terrible entity, feeding on other beings, waiting on another like them to take their body. He can't let him lose himself like that.

Some Gaz for the necromancer!Soap & ghost!Roach au :
Gaz : You remind me of a cat sometimes
Soap : Yeah? Why? Most people say I'm a dog for some reason.
Gaz : That's because you're a himbo. I think you're a cat because sometimes you freeze and stare at an empty corner of the room as if you're seeing something I can't see. What are you looking at, ghosts?
Soap : 😀☝️😐😅
Roach : Don't tell him, he's our main source of fun-
-
Gaz : Hey, I just found out there's a haunted house not that far away and I've been binge watching ghost hunting videos lately, how about we rent some equipment and go try to find ourselves a ghost?
Soap : Oh uh....
Roach : Say yes, please say yes I've always wanted to go ghost hunting!
Soap : Sure.
Then at the haunted house there isn't a single ghost, except Roach, who makes all their equipment go crazy all by himself, and who has the time of his life. Gaz thinks he experienced something huge and Soap doesn't have the heart to tell him that his army of ghosts were actually just a dead Welsh madman cackling like the menace for society that he is from the top of the stairs...

Imagine if Soap started seeing the ghosts of Tommy, Beth, Joseph, and maybe Simon’s mom? Like he has no idea who these people are but they are just like, ‘Oh my god…. That’s Simon’s boy’ and start hanging around
-Anon 🎧
Sadly in the official version of this AU, if they've ever been ghosts they have since moved on and disappeared, but this would be funny as an alternate universe of this alternate universe lmao
So I've written this, it's not really what you said but it's what came to me, maybe I'll write more later, as like a side story or something
"Who are you?"
Soap wakes up with a startle. There's a child standing next to the bed, frowning down at him. A dead child. For some reason he had almost forgotten that sometimes ghosts just come up to him on their own. Children especially, as if they were more discerning of his abilities than adults.
"Huh, hi, I'm Soap," he whispers back to not wake up Simon. Bug isn't anywhere to be seen, but that's not really unusual. His new found abilities to sleep don't work every night, and watching people sleep gets pretty boring. He's probably just roaming around the base.
The child frowns harder. He can't be more than four, with wavy dark blond hair and brown eyes, wearing a super-hero pyjama, blood dripping from the bullet wounds on his chest.
Fuckin hell... It never gets easier.
"You're not Uncle's boyfriend," the child pouts at him with all the might of a toddler.
"Uuuh," Soap hesitates, long enough for the arm around his stomach to tighten its grip, a clear sign that Simon is waking up.
"Wha's goin on?" The older man mumbles against his neck.
"There's a child," Soap answers, "I'm trying to understand what he wants."
"Hmm. Where's Bug?"
"I don't know-"
"Uncle Simon!" The child interrupts him gleefully, now beaming, his frown apparently completely forgotten.
Soap freezes. This man can't catch a break. How does he even go about this? A light thump coming from the door, followed by a "ow!" interrupts his panicking. The door opens right after and Roach comes in, rubbing at his forehead.
"Guys I know none of us know what's happening but I'm gonna need you to start researching, I can't keep becoming material randomly, it hurts and it's embarrassing when I'm spying on people - oh god."
"Uncle Bug!" The child yells again, bouncing on his heels.
Simon's breath quickens slightly behind him, probably still not used to seeing his dead lover, even after a couple weeks of this, which honestly Soap thinks is fair, before he tenses up.
"What are you both not telling me," he demands, sitting up in the bed.
"Are you a friend of my uncle, then?" The child turns back to Soap with less of a frown.
"Uh, no," Bug saves him from answering. "Well, yes, actually, but he's also his boyfriend, like me."
The little boy looks pensive, trying to understand. Simon grabs Soap's arm and turns him around, forcing him to look up at him.
"Johnny, talk to me." His voice is so gentle still, especially when he says his name, but Soap knows it's not a request. It's his officer's voice.
"Maybe ye should ask Bug...?" He tries.
"Bug isn't as easy to break as you."
And he's right. All it takes is for his eyebrows to start pointing up pleadingly and it's over. He's weak, what can he say.
"The child," he sighs, "he's calling ye Uncle Simon. He's basically a toddler, five at most, blond, with-"
"-Brown eyes," Simon interrupts him, looking like he was stabbed. "I know, I only have one nephew."

Good news : I drew something, bad news : I made the boys cry
Simon cried himself to sleep and Roach couldn't do anything because he's dead. (Probably took place way before they met Soap btw, so he can't even count on him to comfort Simon for him)
