Animal Crossing Fish Explained - Habitats #10

I started and ended the original AC Fish Explained series from the depths, so I figured I’d just do that again. I really loved ending this with the two habitats that just ask so much of the animals that dare to live there. Yesterday, we covered the Poles - the freezing ends of the Earth. There, animals have to contend with freezing to death and preventing literal ice crystals from forming inside of them and puncturing their cells! Yeah, it’s crazy. In the dark depths of the ocean, past the continental shelf into the abyss, animals here also contend with not only freezing temperatures, but also no light, little food, and oppressive pressure. Let’s get into it, shall we?

ACNH does a great job of including animals from the biome that really exemplify what an alien world our ocean depths are. From a number of bioluminescent species, such as the Vampire and Firefly Squids, to those showing gigantism, like the Giant Isopod, to special eyes to deal with the dimmest light, like the barreleye, ACNH pulled out all the stops. Therefore, there’s really not much more for me to talk about in this biome, or at least the animals that live here. So now let’s talk about what we don’t know and why we don’t know it...because it’s pretty fascinating.

When someone says we know more about our Moon than we do about the bottom of the ocean, they really aren’t kidding. Only about 20% of the ocean has been explored, with the remaining 80% is a sort of mystery. We have been able to dive very deeply into our oceans - the deepest humans have ever been is 35,858 ft (10,927 m) - and we have been able to make topography maps about the shape of the ocean bottom using satellites and computers and other instruments. So, we have an idea of what the ocean may look like, but actually getting there, collecting samples, and studying the wildlife is one of the most challenging areas of exploration in marine science.

So, why is that? It’s the pressure!

Believe it or not, you’re experiencing the weight of the entire atmosphere on your shoulders all the time. Air weighs something, and it’s about 15 pounds (6.8kg) per square inch at sea level. If you live at a higher altitude, like in the mountains, you may experience less pressure (and you may even feel a difference when traveling between these areas). It’s the same in the ocean. If you’ve ever held a bucket and then filled that bucket with water, you’ll notice a very big difference in the bucket’s new weight. Water is heavy because it is actually quite dense. Imagine holding that bucket of water on your head. Now thirty of them...now a thousand. In the dark depths of the oceans, the water begins to squeeze and constrict you from all directions until your lungs collapse and gases are forced to dissolve into your blood. Fun, right? When you return to the surface too quickly, the gases come out of solution in your blood, causing decompression sickness and other nasty side-effects. Honestly, humans just aren’t naturally equipped to go down that far. Yet, in the Bathypelagic Zone, the “midnight” layer of the ocean from which no light penetrates some 1,000-4,000 meters (3,300 - 13,100 feet) down, Sperm Whales search for food here, such as the giant squid. So...what gives? How do animals contend with this insane pressure?

Well, if we go into every adaptation, we’ll be here all day. But yes, animals have evolved successful strategies for diving down here. Many animals also live down here full time and never see the light of day, literally. One great example is the Blobfish. You have probably heard of the Blobfish, and you have probably seen this picture:

But this isn’t what this fish really looks like! This is the animal torn from its habitat some 4000 m (~13,000 ft) down and brought to the surface. What has happened is that the animal has fallen apart, basically. At the depths it lives, the pressure actually “keeps them together” - they don’t grow much muscle or bone mass as a result and move very slowly along the bottom in search of food, like mollusks. When down in their dark habitat, they look like this:

Big difference, huh? Dragging deep sea creatures up from depth to study them is the equivalent of launching you into space in your underwear. The lack of pressure will kill you (y’know, if we conveniently forget the massive changes in temperature and oxygen and all that). Studying deep sea wildlife is insanely expensive and difficult because of this (they can’t really come to us and we can’t really go to them, not without crazy equipment), and therefore, when we say we know nothing about the depths, it’s for good reason.
