I originally made this tumblr for acnl, so it's sad to watch it die today. Online was so fun and I've met so many amazing and kind people from all over the world because of New Leaf. This game and the community are so special to me. Thank you so much for all the memories 🖤

oh how i miss new leaf. what i wouldn’t give for books cranny to have multiple upgrades again, to have to unlock shampoodles, for everyone to have their own little stores. oh and the conversations i used to have with my villagers! i played 800hrs of acnl and still got dialogue i was sure i’d never seen before. i miss the little play dates you’d set up for a certain time, the regular delivery and fetch quests, perfect fruit!!!! the island with its different flora and fauna and the little medal games which you could get special furniture with. gracie’s special seasonal furniture!! a post office with my sweet pelly and pete (and my grumpy phyllis). dr shrunk teaching emotions. club lol. easier flower breeding (i find it impossible in new horizons). the amount of time i would play on a game that is new leaf on the new horizons graphics/engine. keep the terraforming and design options/lots of design slots but make the island even bigger so everyone can have a shop!! let me go to tortimers island and mystery islands. i just want all the charm of the old games back. new horizons always feels too much like a design sim with soulless versions of the villagers. here’s hoping one day they port new leaf and just make it even better

so I’ve been playing acnl for like two weeks now. it’s been super fun and I even figured out a trick to catching bugs on trees. but the thing that stands out to me the most. is that everyone is SO GODDAMN NICE. I’ve only interacted with two real people. one let me take whatever fruit I wanted from their town and then donated 50k bells to my bridge. the other one I just met on Club Tortimer and they GAVE ME A MILLION BELLS???? JUST OUT OF NOWHERE??? THEY DIDN’T EVEN WANT ANYTHING IN RETURN??? whoever said video games cause violence never experienced a total stranger wearing a halo and Hawaiian shirt run in circles, accidentally scare a moth you were trying to catch, and then giving you a million bells for no clear reason.
also if anyone wants to be friends my town kind of sucks right now but I have pears, peaches, bananas, lychee, and durian and weirdly good luck with rare bugs. like I’ve already caught three or four bird wings and just caught a golden stag and I haven’t been playing more than two weeks. my friend code is 2251-9734-0905. you can dm me your code if you don’t want it floating around the internet.

hi.
its been a looong time. but I wanted to say somethin today since 3DS and Wii U dying today. its been a loooong time since i touched my 3DS (u do NOT wanna see wat happened to it) but i used to play a looot of acnl and achhd.
i have good and bad memories with acnl but i wanted to focus a lil on happy home designer. i got that game for my bday along with my first amiibo, tortimer (which i couldnt use since i had normie 3ds without the lil amiibo connector thing, but it was still cool). i remember going thru town after finishing a home, visiting my music school, my steven universe themed concert hall, my everchanging store. one of the cool things about hhd that hhp doesnt have is that it was easy to interact with stuff similar to villagers: dancing in front of stereos, posing in front of roses, playing arcade games...
another thing that hhd does better than hhp is the online happy home network. in hhd, u can actually search thru the network to see stuff that matched themes and stuff. its the reason why i made this tumbl blog (even tho i've all but abandoned it) i wanted a way for ppl to find inspo for their own homes in hhp by looking at others easily.
not sure wat else to say, just wanted to talk about hhn a lil. rip

Hi! I wanted to say I agree with your take on animal crossing and not needing updates, but there is something about ACNH that makes it lack a certain something in ACNL, WW, etc. Idk if it's just me or the times we're living in that has an impact on it tbh. I found myself going back to playing New Leaf because New Horizons started to feel stale, even though New Leaf has way less in terms of content. I was wondering if you or any followers have felt this way about New Horizons too?
oh friend, i am 100% with you on that! acnh is a shell of what the animal crossing series once was, especially compared to new leaf. My friend says it best when they say it's just a decorating game now. You decorate your house, you decorate your island, and that's it. Where older animal crossings had more of an emphasis on community, both with the villagers AND with real life friends.
Remember in New Leaf when you could go to tortimer's islands, and there were little minigames you could play with your friends? Some were co-op, some were battles. And it just felt like in new leaf, there was more you could do when you visited your friends. Whereas with acnh you can...do what? wander around and admire what your friend has done with the place? there's no interactivity between players in any significant or meaningful way.
ACNH is great in many aspects, it optimized a lot of things and had great quality of life changes and added features. But it definitely feels like some life was sucked out of it for whatever reason...

Some things I want to return for the next Animal Crossing game:
ACGCN features:
- generally more robust villager interactions such as prompting villagers to give you chores, expanded and edgier villager dialogue
- randomly spawned soccer balls or basketballs and other play items
- MORE OBVIOUS ACRE SYSTEM
ACWW features:
- unique holidays
- villager hobbies and multi-villager interactions! Again, just more robust villager interactions
ACCF features:
ACNL features:
- the shopping strip!! I loved that all of those things were kinda in their own spot
- Tortimers Island and the mini games! Maybe mash it with the concept of the original ACGCN features where you have your own shack and a couple island unique villagers
ACNH features:
- I love everything about the customization/terraforming aspects of this game and the only thing I would really change in that regard is better items
- Harvs Island, maybe it's a part of the shopping center area like New Leaf and City Folk.
Please please please Nintendo please focus more on fun with this next one, ACNH just felt like a proof of concept and while I LOOOOVE the creative aspect of it, it just isn't that interactive or social!!

animal crossing: new horizons 4th anniversary 🍃 (a retrospect)
before new horizons came out I made a post about my acnl pet peeves. 5/6 years after said post it's safe to say i'm unsatisfied with the way new horizons is in its current state.
not "animal crossing"
i think new horizons is a good game, it just pales as an animal crossing instalment. the franchise was first created because eguchi (animal crossing director) felt really alone when moving to the big city. it's undeniable that animal crossing, at its core, is about community and friendship. when I think of new horizons, I think of terraforming and customisation. that's not a bad thing per se, but it feels insanely shallow. the dialogue feels really superficial and they just repeat the same shit over and over that I just avoid talking to them. new leaf dialogue wasn't great but new horizons was worse.
lack of content + updates
new horizons is one of those games that relies on constant updates to satiate its playerbase. once the updates stopped coming in 2022 or something, the game went stale. there is a significant lack of content in the game overall, and barely any quality of life features. no bulk crafting after 4 years (I don't like the idea of crafting in general)?? and why do the golden tools break. what is the point of them. why do all tools break. why is my watering can breaking. why isn't there a gauge for tool usage? look at timmy and tommy's shop and tell me that shit is complete. I could go on but there's a lot of mundane things that piss me off. new leaf had one major update in 2016 and even w/o it it's still really enjoyable.
horrible multiplayer
quite possibly the worst multiplayer gameplay to ever exist. apart from no tortimer island on a damn island, people joining and leaving is a nightmare. you can have 8 people on an island at the same time which is both a blessing and a curse because the loading times in this game are horrific. you are forced to sit through several plane animations whilst you are fighting for your life trying to leave. the way switch multiplayer works is that you input the dodo code and it connects to a shared system and then to the host switch. 3ds just connected directly to the host. that meant it was much more efficient. the switch one takes so much longer and it doesn't help that's there's nothing to do. it's especially annoying since you can have up to 8 people at the same time.
it's more of a rant than a retrospect...it's a hollow game. I still find it enjoyable but it could've been so much more. it happened to come out at a really good time when everyone was stuck at home but after that it's lost all of its momentum. it's really disappointing. I thoroughly enjoy happy home paradise though 🌴 the dialogue in the happy home games r so funny and the localisers popped off with those.

I HADN’T had any coffee yet this day, so I don’t really know why Tortimer was saying this. I guess there’s nothing in the game code to actually check whether or not I’ve had coffee before talking with Tortimer? That’s gotta be it, right?
