I just finished painting this new display card yesterday for Aaron Rossner's special figurine project which is now only available at my lil shop Toutoune Gallery on 998 Bathurst St. in Toronto, ON. *Blessed*

Aaron Rossner (also known as @wingnut_toys on instagram) is an avid toy collector, an amazing artist and tinkerer who lives in Victoria, BC. I haven't had the pleasure of meeting him in person yet, but I've been a fan from afar for many years.

Check out his instagram feed and visit Toutoune Gallery too to view some photographs of the figurines from this project. They are so fabulous! Every single one is so precious. Aaron is a master at recyling funny bits of wood, which you will surely notice if you view any of the figurines this painting is based off of.

After the officers of Task Force 7 return from Manitoba with the corpse of their teammate, tensions grow with the sharp uptick of unnatural activities, a string of corpses with their stomach cavities hollowed, and the sudden disappearances of the ghoul family of Toronto. The officers are forced to grapple with the world beginning to end as they are sent out to investigate these mysteries interwoven with personal secrets better left unsaid...

Took me like 4 months or more to get this postcard done. God. Took forever to cut out the stencils, and then forever + a week to paint the stencils in and trim the stencils with each print too (since the paint builds up on the stencil). Never again. Not like this at least 😭

It's time for Organic Design

Hey hey! I’m back again :)

Same vibes, different concept: Organic Design

I decided to address this concept as well, since I had chance to heard about it in my university in Milan for the fist time.

Starting point: Organic design is a mixture between man-made buildings or manufactures and Natural environment.

We’re going to explore more deeply into architectural design side reconciling with a sustainable approach.

Organic design is a kind of mission born to emphasize balance in the human-nature relationship. The organic style is a major feature of mid-century modern design and architecture, a movement that emerged in the United States from the 1940s to the 1960s.

Following natural principles, organic design tends to facilitate human interaction through meaningful and functional objects. The intent is to make the entire experience effective and enjoyable.

There are many features we could highlight:

Minimalism in terms of materials, natural textures and neutral forms, lines etc.

Neutral and muted colours to give the idea of reflecting earth and nature components

Open spaces aim to suggest the sense of freedom as in the modern-style approach. Living in organic modern homes means feeling the outdoors inside and bringing natural elements inside.

Simple materials like natural wood, rattan, jute, seagrass, and others. Designers complement these with other simple materials, like concrete, glass, steel, and cast-iron.

At this point, I would like to make the concept more concrete by talking about a virtuous project born in Italy: Krill Design

Inside the World of 'Art Dropping' Imagine while on your morning coffee run, you find a package on a bench wrapped in brown paper, with a note saying there’s art inside. Opening the package reveals an original piece of art, a small, acrylic painting with broad brushstrokes resembling the ocean, or maybe it’s a mountain. While it may be surprising, it’s sure to make your day. This is the goal of Toronto contemporary abstract artist Courtney Senior and her International Art and Found Day, the third annual celebration of which will be held on March 12, 2023. So far, 850 artists from 42 countries are scheduled to participate, with each contributing at least one, if not multiple works. “Art doesn't have to be scary. I think people get very intimidated by the price tag that comes with a lot of art or feeling like they don't belong,” says Senior, explaining that the day “introduces them to this vast world of artists that they didn't even know existed in their own backyard.” Senior began painting in her 20s to help with anxiety and became even more committed after her father’s sudden death. But she soon realized she had made too many of her colorful paintings to fit in her small condo. Senior didn’t have the confidence to sell her work but she had a background in marketing, which led to a lightbulb moment: Why not leave the works for people to take for free? Each has an explanatory note: “Hello, I’m an original abstract painting in need of a loving home. FREE ART #ArtandFound.” Over the course of almost a decade, Senior has placed a piece somewhere about once a month (and sometimes daily during the holidays), and the Instagram hashtag has become a popular way for other artists to give away their work. Senior says she’s heard from more than 50 percent of the people who’ve taken her art and she particularly enjoys the kismet moments, when a piece comes into someone’s life at just the right moment, like when they’ve just moved to a new city. During the height of the pandemic in 2020, she was looking for a way to uplift spirits and inspire the artist community and decided to launch her effort globally with International Art and Found Day. She was happy when some 50 artists initially signed up but was shocked as it continued to grow in the run-up to the first event, with 478 artists in 39 countries participating. Senior isn’t alone in wanting to spread the art. Cities like New York, Seattle, and Portland have been inspired by the Little Free Library movement to create public art exchanges. Many amateur or hobby artists also participate in “art dropping,” and some renowned creatives have made it an integral part of their practice, often to impart a particular message. Australian-born artist CJ Hendry has garnered a large social media following with her hyper-realistic sketches. After being hit with a copyright infringement lawsuit, she made a game out of “disposing” the art she had to destroy. Her signature red boxes have now become a viral phenomenon, with Hendry leaving prints and merchandise in cities around the world. This distributive model also stands out in an age of NFTs and unprecedentedly high-priced art sales, which do benefit many artists but also raise questions about the commodification of art and in some ways make it more inaccessible than ever. In this context, giving away art for free and to complete strangers is almost revolutionary. Senior is also working to expand her “feel good” movement. This year she has partnered with a Toronto company to also place art kits out on the day, encouraging others to embrace their creative spirits. Jo Lonsdale, who lives in Lancashire in the United Kingdom, has participated in every Art and Found Day. Lonsdale took care of special needs kids all her life but decided to pursue her artistic interests after she began looking after her dad. She became hooked on alcohol inks, an unpredictable medium that lets her create modern pieces in vivid colors and metallics. “You don't really use a paintbrush or anything,” says Lonsdale. “You just let the ink flow. And s. it's very fluid, contemporary, and it kind of does its own thing, which I like. Every piece is totally unique.” Lonsdale’s friends soon wanted to purchase her pieces and she began sharing her process on Instagram, where she learned about Senior. “I think it’s a brilliant thing because art can be so expensive. It's nice when it's achievable for everybody,” she says. Lonsdale has left her pieces, which include works on synthetic paper, jewelry, and cards, in the woods around her town and along the waterfront promenade. She remembers a particularly memorable finder who had just lost her mother. The woman wrote to Lonsdale, thanking her for giving “me such a lift. Your talent and heart have given me my biggest smile today.” While she is getting more and more commissions and interest through word of mouth and art fairs, Lonsdale says #ArtandFound has allowed her to connect with artists around the world she otherwise never would have met. Erin Speights, who is located outside of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, also sees the event as a way for her career to grow. Speights took a few art classes in college but really got involved after she made paintings for her stepdaughters’ room. She played around with different techniques and mediums, starting with landscapes and sunsets and expanding to gold leaf and finally more abstract watercolor designs. “It's very soothing,” she says of her work. “A lot of people tell me it's very peaceful and calming and reminds them of the ocean and the beach. Some people say it looks like sea glass.” Now in her third year of participating in International Art and Found Day, Speights enjoys giving hints about where she’ll hide the piece on Instagram and then watching from a distance as someone discovers it. “Even if it's just that one person that finds my one piece, it's really nice to just give back and have that gratitude,” she says. “I personally don't think there's anything better than having a physical piece of artwork that's just so personal in your home from an artist,” says Senior. “It comes with such a story as well: Going around, you find this piece of work, you discover this day, you realize all these other people are doing it. I think there's almost a whole other piece of it than just the artwork itself.” For those wanting to find art on March 12, Senior, who jokes that she herself has never found a piece, suggests looking in high-traffic places in clear view. Tony Curtis: A Portrait of an Artist By Raquel Stecher

"I'd like to be known as an artist who acts rather than an actor who paints.” — Tony Curtis

There were two things that got Tony Curtis through his traumatic childhood: movies and art. Born Bernard Schwartz in 1925, the young Curtis went through a lot as a child. His family struggled to put food on the table, his mother and youngest brother Robert had severe mental health issues, he was temporarily placed in an orphanage when his family could no longer afford to keep him and his brother Julius died in a freak accident. As a result, Curtis suffered from depressive episodes and found an escape watching his heroes Cary Grant and Errol Flynn on the big screen. When he wasn’t watching movies, he found solace in drawing. To keep him occupied, Curtis’ father, a tailor by trade, gave him tailor’s chalk, pencils, crayons and brown wrapping paper which Curtis would use for drawing. He also used different colored chalk to draw images on sidewalks and slabs of concrete.

Curtis would take his fascination with the silver screen and turn it into a successful acting career, starring in films such as THE DEFIANT ONES (’58), SOME LIKE IT HOT (’59) and SPARTACUS (’60). But his love for art never left him. Completely self-taught, Curtis would take any opportunity to hone his skills as artist. He would often bring an easel, canvas and paints to a film set so he could paint whenever he had some free time. If that was too cumbersome, he’d bring paper and ink pens for drawing. Over time, Curtis developed an eye for perspective, shape and color. In his memoir he wrote, “Art was an antidote for the deep depressions that I suffered as a child… I liked drawing what I was thinking or seeing. It became a driving force in my life.”

Curtis was a conceptual artist who had a gift for abstract impressionism. He was influenced by the work of many legendary artists including Van Gogh, Picasso, Matisse, Balthus, Magritte and Miró. He felt that the great artists spoke through their paintings, and he would take from their work as inspiration for his own. He met some artists in his many travels as an actor, including Marc Chagall whom he greatly admired. He was particularly inspired by Joseph Cornell, an artist who pioneered the art of collage and assemblage in box form. Curtis would collect a variety of unrelated objects and arrange them in old cigar or trinket boxes and let the assemblage tell a story.

For Curtis, the mere act of painting gave him great joy and every brushstroke a performance. He loved working within the confined space of the canvas. His paintings consisted of oil on canvas, and acrylic on paper (sometimes even handmade paper) and he would also paint over giclee prints of photographs transforming them into Warhol-like designs. He used bold strokes of color and alternating patterns to create lively and vibrant pieces. Rarely did Curtis ever do portraiture, preferring instead to paint still life assemblages; table settings, flowers, fruit, landscapes and animals in repose. About his process, Curtis said “when I paint, I don’t paint shapes, I paint colors. The most difficult thing to do is verbalize a painting. When I start painting, I have no idea what I’m going to do. The first color I use--that tells me where the painting is going. It paints itself, and the painting tells me when it’s finished. It’s almost as if it does it for me.”

After his rehabilitation for drug addiction in the 1980s and with his acting career starting to wind down, Tony Curtis found solace in painting. He shifted gears towards becoming a full-time artist and a part-time actor. Curtis briefly moved to Hawaii to paint and exhibit his work at a Honolulu gallery. His paintings were exhibited in Los Angeles, New York City and Paris. Famous friends including Billy Wilder, Lew Wasserman, Frank Sinatra, Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas all purchased some of Curtis’ work. 

In 2005, the Museum of Modern Art acquired his acrylic painting Red Table, something Curtis was particularly proud. Other pieces of his can be found on display at the Butler Institute of American Art, the Toronto Museum, the National Hungarian Museum and various restaurants and businesses. One of his pieces, Tropical Splendor, sold at Sotheby’s for $10,000 in 2018, eight years after his death. In life, Curtis was never preoccupied with selling his work or the admiration that came with galley exhibitions. Instead he was perfectly content to hold on to pieces, adorning every nook and cranny of his Las Vegas home with them. If he did part with his paintings, he often gifted them to friends or charity.

Tony Curtis’ artwork never garnered the same attention as his acting career but that was perfectly fine with him. He was just happy to be able to do something he truly loved. Curtis once said about his paintings, “I just paint them. And I don’t even care if people like them or not — If I like it, that’s what matters. I paint for myself.”
