So, I’m currently playing through Danganronpa V3. Just got through the free time of Chapter 4 and I haven’t been able to play in a while, so I have had quite a bit of time to think about where everyone is going to end up

So yeah, possible spoilers for the DR games under the cut:

Shuichi: Yeah, he’s gonna survive. Seriously doubt they’d kill off the protagonist twice in one game.

Kaito: I swear, I’ve been seeing death flags for this guys ever since Chapter 2 (I swore he was gonna end up as the killer in that one) and especially after that scene at the end of Chapter 3. Since he’s made it this far and has become this close to Shuichi, he’s definitely gonna end up dead in Chapter 5. DR 1 made me think seemingly important characters like him were likely survivors, but SDR2 Ch 5 has made me doubt everything.

Maki: I have similar feelings towards her as I do for Kaito, except not nearly as much. She’s honestly one I’m pretty sure is going to end up a survivor (besides Shuichi of course).

Miu: I would have told you she was a likely survivor at the beginning of the game, however the likelihood of that has gotten lower and lower as the game has gone on. Maybe I just thought she would be more of an important figure, but she’s kinda just relegated to comic relief. Pretty confident she’s going to be the victim of Chapter 4 seeing as she set up the program world and lacking her knowledge would make investigating all the more difficult

Gonta: I unfortunately may have been spoiled here as I’m pretty sure I caught a glimpse of Gonta in an execution scene, so I now know he’s probably going to end up a killer, my bet’s on Chapter 4, as he seems to have some kind of arc going on this chapter, but doesn’t seem as relevant to be a Chapter 5 killer. If he is the killer, it has to be on accident or in defense of some kind. There’s no way this sweet boy could kill in cold blood :(

Tsumugi: Honestly, she feels like a character should have died a chapter or two ago, but she’s made it this far, so she may end up a Hiro or Sonia style survivor where she’s managed to dodge being relevant to anything long enough to make it to the end.

K1-B0: Kinda similar thoughts as Tsumugi here, but in a less aggressive as I predicted him as a survivor early on. I don’t see him dying in Chapter 4 and he isn’t a major enough player to be dying in Chapter 5

Himiko: I’m predicting her as a survivor solely because I’d be fucking pissed if she died after starting an actual significant arc. They did it with Taka in DR 1 and Hiyoko in SDR 2, so I swear to god I’m going to lose it if they haven’t learned their lesson by now.

Kokichi: honestly, this dude is the one I’m most conflicted about. I guess it comes down to whether he’s gonna end up like Byakuya, being someone who ultimately comes around and stops being a shitter, or like Nagito, someone who is genuinely malicious. If he’s like Byakuya, he’s going to end up a survivor, but if he’s like Nagito, I honestly have no clue. I feel like making him a killer would be too obvious and once genuine evidence is brought up, nobody’s going to doubt it. However, killing him off in Chapter 5 seems like too much of a repeat of SDR 2. I genuinely have no idea with this guy.

So the TL:DR goes like this:

Miu is going to be killed by Gonta in Chapter 4

Either Kokichi, Maki, or Kaito is going to be the victim of Chapter 5 with Maki or Kaito as the killer (assuming they aren’t already the victim).

The survivors will consist of Shuichi, Tsumugi, Himiko, Keebo, and either Maki or Kokichi.

Now, this is all assuming that Chapters 4 and 5 will end up with a single victim killed by another, single killer and that Chapter 5 will be the final killing. They could throw in a curve ball at any time, but these are my predictions based on my knowledge of the previous games. I might end up live blogging the rest of the game, that could be fun.

Just some headcanons I have for what Kaito does with his classmates when they hang out 🌠

🍃 Rantaro 🍃

-Kaito always asks for pictures of Rantaro's most recent travels

-They share a lot of stories and knowledge, Kaito talks about space and Rantaro about all the places he's visited

-They bake, most usually it's always cookies

-Sometimes they just go outside and enjoy the silence, if it's getting dark they'll stargaze

-They plan a lot of beach trips

🎹 Kaede 🎹

-Kaede tries teaching him how to play the piano

-They listen to a lot of music, if they're in Kaede's lab she'll put in all the records/discs she has and classical songs she knows Kaito likes

-They talk about whatever comes to mind freely

-Sometimes they just walk around the school & courtyard

-Kaede always asks for space info cause she knows it makes him happy

🎾 Ryoma 🎾

-Kaito a l w a y s asks Ryoma to play tennis with him

-After the 100th no, Kaito gives up and just spends time normally with him

-There's a lot of silence on Ryoma's part, but Kaito doesn't mind filling it in

-They usually end up watching a movie

-Sometimes, on the rare occasions Ryoma sees that Kaito's feeling down, he actually offers to play tennis with him (which immediately gets Kaito happy)

🕸 Kirumi 🕸

-Kaito tries helping her clean and tidy up, but Kirumi insists on doing it herself

-Kaito always tells her he genuinely wants to hang out with her and that she doesn't need to do anything maid-ish

-They cook a lot, though it's mostly Kirumi and Kaito trying to help as best as he can

-Lots of tea parties and pastries

-Kirumi teaches him how to properly clean, while Kaito teaches her random space facts

🎨 Angie 🎨

-They draw & paint almost every time, it almost always ends in a paint war where they splash each other with paint and end up being scolded by Kirumi

-Kaito models a lot for her sculptures and wooden carvings

-They have conversations about their respective beliefs (though not too deep cause if the Atua stuff starts to get cult-ish, Kaito freaks out)

-Angie teaches him how to do a galaxy on canvas with different colors and techniques

-They like to swap coats for fun

💥 Tenko 💥

-It took a longgggggggg time for them to "hang out" properly (even now, its more like Tenko tolerating his presence for a good hour & if nobody else is available)

-A lot of the conversations is just Tenko complaining about men and calling Kaito a degenerate male, but Kaito's used to it

-They spar a lot in Tenko's lab

-They do competitive stuff, like races and who can do the most push-ups

-Tenko teaches him a few aikido moves

📚 Kiyo 📚

-It took a while for them to hang out without Kaito being scared a good 90% of the time

-Kiyo tells him a lot of stories, he refrains from sharing any that involves ghosts/demons/etc (though sometimes he can't help it), likewise Kaito tells him about important space findings in a historical aspect

-Kaito isn't fond of Kiyo's lab so they spend most of the time in the library reading, they go to museums every once in a while

-For Kiyo, hanging out with Kaito sometimes means just following and observing Kaito as he interacts with everyone, he likes to study his behavior

-They watch a lot of documentaries

🔧 Miu 🔧

-Kaito helps test out her inventions a lot

-They aggresively rock out to music, a lot of it is super dirty and sexual but Kaito doesn't care

-Miu takes him to a lot of parties & clubs

-They work on small projects and inventions together, Kaito's favorite so far has been a super realistic star projector that he always uses in his room (Miu ofc let him keep it)

-Kaito talks about the engineering part of his astronaut training so Miu feels more in her element during conversations

🐞 Gonta 🐞

-They spend a lot of time catching bugs outside

-Gonta teaches him about insects and Kaito teaches him about space

-Gonta lets Kaito name the bugs they catch, so far they're all named after planets

-Gonta gives him piggy back rides when they run around the school & outside, bug nets in hand

-They plan camping trips together

🎲 Kokichi 🎲

-There's always so much b a n t e r

-They do a lot milk puzzles and play any type of card/board game

-Kokichi always tricks him into watching movies that involve ghosts, which always ends up with Kaito screaming and pulling Kokichi into a bone crushing hug

-Competitions & challenges all day every day, they range from staring contests to races to 'try not to laugh' videos

-They pull a lot of pranks together (Kokichi always convinces Kaito to do 'em)

🪡 Tsumugi 🪡

-They watch a lot of action anime

-Cosplaying!! Tsumugi helps him dress up as badass characters or characters she thinks fit his personality and Kaito always has fun impersonating said character

-They play a lot of dancing games, Tsumugi always beats him but Kaito has fun regardless

-Sometimes Kaito helps her make her costumes in the sewing aspect, since his grandma taught him how to sew

-Tsumugi takes him to a lot of anime conventions, she made him his own superhero costume for him to wear (the costume is space themed and Kaito l o v e s it)

🤖 Kiibo 🤖

-They watch a lot of movies

-Kaito really likes hearing about Kiibo's functions and abilities

-They like to solve math & science problems

-If Kiibo gets any robophobia from the others, Kaito immediately invites him to hang out and do regular teen things to prove he's just as human as they are

-Kiibo uses a built-in photo feature to capture pictures of the night sky to show them to Kaito whenever they next hang out

🪄 Himiko 🪄

-Kaito helps her practice her magic tricks (whether it's being put in the actual trick or being her assistant), he also always asks about her magic

-Lots of cloud watching and stargazing

-They don't do psysical activity due to how Himiko is, but he does give her a lot of piggy back rides

-They take a lot of naps on the grass

-They eat a lot of sweets

🔪 Maki 🔪

-Maki trains with him to help him improve his self defense skills, this includes weapon training in case he's ever in an emergency and needs to use one

-They train a lot in general, though Kaito slacks off sometimes to talk

-They like to go to coffee shops and eat in restaurants

-It took a while, but Maki eventually let him play with her hair freely, so sometimes it's just a comfortable silence while Kaito tries to braid her hair

-They visit Maki's orphanage a lot, Kaito always tells the kids stories about space and being an astronaut

🔍Shuichi 🔍

-Training sessions almost every night, followed by lots of stargazing

-They have a lot of movie nights, they alternate between mystery/suspense and anything related to space, they also watch a lot of series together

-They like to read manga and comics

-Kaito takes Shuichi to the planetarium a lot and teaches him about all he knows

-Kaito always asks about Shuichi's detective cases and tries helping him if he's stuck, likewise Shuichi always asks about his latest astronaut training

YES THANK YOU he has been my new hyperfixation since I’ve finished V3 a few days ago <3

First Impression: I thought he was pretty useless. I was curious how the “Ultimate Robot” talent would even work, but it was more like a Pinocchio thing...I think the goal was to make him as close to human as possible, and he didn’t seem like a very capable human either...

On top of that, he kept bragging about how his functions worked so that didn’t help.

Impression Now: I would protect him with my life. Some of the cast of V3 seemed to be pretty useless throughout the story, but that wasn’t the case with him. I began to grow more and more attached to him and when I saw those cutscenes? I was sold. Best in the game. 

And about the bragging, he just wants to be appreciated :’) I can relate to wanting validation.

Favorite moment: Again, the cutscenes. His personality change was unsettling and intriguing. The scenes were so well animated, it makes you realize how far Danganronpa has actually come.

Idea for a story: I got nothing. But for a side game/story, it would be cool for maybe Shuichi, to explore Japan with Keebo, maybe a Japanese festival? Sorry I can’t really thing of much~

Unpopular Opinion: He has a lot of personality. The “That’s Robophobic >:( “ thing may seem a bit annoying to people who don’t kin him and I get that. But I think it’s pretty endearing, if not funny. But that isn’t all to him. He has traits, speech patterns, a cool character design and a dynamic with each of the characters. As repetitive as one line can get, it’s a catchphrase. I think that’s the point. 

I mean, it’s not like there’s this one character that does the exact same thing but collects kins for that distinct reason (*cough* Kokichi *cough*) 

Not to mention the...aforementioned liar- is the very reason Keebo has to repeat his statement every interaction. 

Favorite Relationship: SAIIBO. It’s my favorite Shuichi ship and also my favorite Keebo ship. I already shipped it, but after watching free time events, my soul left my body. Not to mention the love hotel events. “Keebo, this is a handshake...”

Favorite Headcanon: After looking at this one comic, I LOVE the headcanon that Keebo acts tipsy when his battery is low.

Bottom line is, Keebo is awesome robot boi

Danganronpa Chapter Ranking

Ranking all 18 chapters across the three games. 

First, I will rank each corresponding chapters over one another.

Chapter 1:

1. Welcome to Dangan Island + Destination Despair (DR2)

DR2 is the technical best of the series and it definitely has the strongest opening. While I actually prefer DR1′s prologue, DR2 definitely ups the stakes when it comes to the actual introductory murder mystery, creating a spooky nighttime locked room situation right off the bat and keeping you guessing as to how the murder went down. The high point, of course, is the revelation of Nagito’s true nature, which let you know that this is a guy to watch out for.

2. Welcome to Despair + To Survive (DR1)

Like I said, the prologue to DR1 is my favorite one - just the opening scene alone perfectly sets the tone for all that’s to follow, I also really enjoy getting to explore the school and interacting with the adorable Sayaka Maizono. The problem with this chapter is when Sayaka gets killed. Not only is the investigation a very standard one, but the mystery is too easily solved - Sayaka even wrote her killer’s freaking name down and most players will figure that out well before any of the characters do! I know this is the first case and all, but come on!

3. Ultimate Revival + My Class Trial, Our Class Trial (DRV3)

If DR1′s first chapter problem was being too easy to solve, this one’s problem is that it’s impossible to solve because the game withholds the key evidence for the sake of a twist - evidence that exposes the female protagonist you are playing as, Kaede, as the culprit! It’s a shame - despite some issues here and there (goddamn Monokubs...), I was liking the atmosphere this chapter was setting up with its ticking clock factor, the Ultimate Academy was well designed and kept distinct from Hope’s Peak, and Kaede was a wonderful, lovable protagonist the likes of which we hadn’t seen before in this series. But that one ending twist which results in her getting taken from us in favor of some dude ruins the whole chapter.

Chapter 2:

1. Boy’s Life of Despair (DR1)

Only DR1 manages to have its second chapter be an improvement over the first: with not only expansions on all of the characters and even the school itself, but a mystery that isn’t so easily solved because a certain rich douchebag deliberately tampered with the crime scene in order to make the case more challenging. The only mark I have against this one is the weird gender politics at play, and even then it’s not insulting or anything: Mondo’s toxic masculinity is even highlighted as his fatal flaw. And of course, this chapter gave us Genocide Jack. WIN.

2. Sea and Punishment, Sin and Coconuts (DR2)

While a step down from the preceding chapter, it’s not by much: this is still a quality chapter with quality character and plot development and a quality murder mystery. My biggest gripes are that it becomes obvious who the culprit is early into the trial and how they committed the murder but it takes a long time for the characters to decide on those things. If that wasn’t enough, the revelation of the killer’s motives is ridiculous, with two shocking swerves on top of each other, one of them a lie and the other one the truth. The actual scene leading to the execution, however, more than makes up for that with how emotional it is, with one of Derek Stephen Prince’s best performances in his career as Fuyuhiko reveals his inner vulnerability.

3. A Thin Line Divides Heaven and Hell (DRV3)

This second chapter is a HUGE step down from the first one. Shuichi is immediately a far blander, less compelling protagonist than Kaede was, there are too many detours before the murder happens, the mystery is way too convoluted and the culprit’s motivation is an even bigger shocking swerve than DR2′s, and the execution just goes full Saw to the point of being almost too uncomfortable to watch. In the end, it doesn’t even feel like this case mattered, it was all a drawn-out way of revealing the underwhelming “twist” to Maki’s true identity which only ended up working against her character. The best part of this chapter would have to be the body discovery, which is one of the most shocking and effective in the whole series.

Chapter 3:

1. A Next Generation Legend! Stand Tall, Galactic Hero! (DR1)

Third Case Syndrome hits DR1 the least out of all the games, as despite the problem of the class trial’s pay-off not matching the intensity of the build-up, it still doesn’t cheat the player in any way. The mystery is still well designed and on paper the crime is brilliant, and even the way it falls apart in execution makes logical sense given what has been established about Celestia and Hifumi throughout the game. There’s even fun to be had in the trial given Celestia’s legendary breakdown, plus her execution being among the series’ funniest.

2. Trapped by the Ocean Scent (DR2)

I like some things about this chapter, particularly early on: Fuyuhiko’s character development, Ibuki’s concert, Nekomaru’s sacrifice, Nagito continuing to be his delightfully twisted self, and Monokuma’s hilarious “Wizard of Monomi” movie. The build-up to the body discovery with that supposed suicide video is also legitimately scary. But it all falls apart in the class trial to a comical degree, with the revelation of the culprit having so much wrong with it I hardly know where to begin. Everything about Despair Disease in general feels like filler and a way to ax off three characters that Kodaka had no idea what to do with. It’s just a glaringly bad chapter.

3. Transfer Student From Beyond the Grave (DRV3)

This is where Third Case Syndrome hits its nadir: once again some legitimately good and scary build-up (including the requisite second murder happening halfway through the investigation when you’re not expecting it to) is destroyed by a farcical class trial that is riddled with plot holes, convoluted mechanics, and random extreme character turns that makes it clear that Kodaka was just doing all this to kill off characters he felt had reached their limits rather than staying consistent with what came before. Special mention must go to Korekiyo’s motives. While Celestia and Mikan’s motives aren’t sympathetic either, there are sympathetic reasons behind them. But with Kiyo, the reasoning behind his serial killing is...incest. Literal brother-sister incest. We had a potentially interesting, creepy character in Kiyo, but he was utterly squandered and turned into one big incest/see-saw meme. Such a waste!

Chapter 4:

1. Do Ultimate Robots Dream of Clockwork? (DR2)

One of the most challenging yet also one of the most unique and rewarding chapters in the whole series. The Strawberry / Grape funhouse is the stuff of nightmares, and the game doesn’t pull any punches in how horrific the situation inside it is, with the characters slowly starving to death and with the only way out being to either kill someone or brave a creepy life-threatening escape room. Then once the murder happens you get to play as Nagito during the investigation, getting further insight into his fucked-up mind before he pulls a morbidly hilarious 180 on his attitude and becomes a total condescending jerkwad rather than a creepy self-denigrating suck-up. And the investigation and trial amounting to figuring out how the funhouse is structured and how that structure was utilized in the murder is intellectually stimulating in the best way. Add to that one of the most emotional culprit revelations and executions and you have one of the greatest chapters ever put in a mystery-solving game.

2. All*Star*Apologies (DR1)

DR2′s fourth chapter is better, but DR1′s comes extremely close. Not only is it a locked room mystery where just about everyone except the protagonist and deuteragonist are a feasible suspect which leads to the most fun, challenging and satisfying class trial in the game, but it also ends up being the story’s emotional high point. The reveal of who actually killed Sakura and why, the reasoning behind why an innocent party tried to take the blame for it, and the long-overdue uniting of the Killing Game’s participants (even Byakuya!) against their true enemy, Monokuma...it’s powerful stuff that lingers in your memory long after it’s finished.

3. Live and Let the Languid World Live (DRV3)

Now don’t get me wrong: this chapter was the best one in DRV3 since the first chapter, but I feel like it’s trying too hard to recapture the glory of the previous games’ fourth chapters and mostly failing. The virtual world and trying to figure out how it works is a blatant copy of the funhouse from DR2, except that we barely spend time in the virtual world compared to the funhouse and whereas figuring out the structure of the funhouse actually took a lot of thinking, the secret of the virtual world is painfully easy to deduce and leads to another instance of the player being several steps ahead of the characters. Kokichi as a Nagito-esque antagonist just doesn’t work and it’s frustrating to watch him play all the other characters like fiddles when it’s so transparently obvious what he is doing. Lastly, while the deaths of Sakura, Alter-Ego Chihiro, Nekomaru and Gundham were sad, there was still a note of triumph and hope in them as well. There’s none of that in the deaths of Miu, Gonta and his Alter-Ego. These deaths are just sad, depressing wastes, even moreso in retrospect after Chapter 6.

Chapter 5:

1. Smile at Hope in the Name of Despair (DR2)

Nagito was right: DR2′s Chapter 4 was merely “the opening act” for THE best chapter in both the game and the entire series. Seeing Nagito finally go full-on batshit insane and carve out a path of destruction that leads to his own death is enthralling, as is figuring out the hows and the whys of his death, peeling back the layers of his madness and malice until you arrive at the horrifying truth, all culminating in one of the most heart-wrenching moments in the series when Chiaki finally reveals the truth about herself and offers herself up as a sacrifice to stop Nagito’s heinous scheme from coming to fruition. I get teary-eyed just thinking about it! The bizarre triangular dynamic between Hajime, Chiaki and Nagito really made this game’s story as good as it is despite uneven writing early on, and this chapter is the culmination of it.

2. Voyage Without Passion or Purpose (DRV3)

When it comes to the game’s overarching story, I don’t really care much for the events that transpire in this chapter. But when taken as a stand-alone, it’s excellent. Someone has been killed and someone is responsible for it, but for the first time in the series you aren’t just unsure about the culprit, but the victim as well! To make matters worse, the culprit shows up to the class trial inside a mech suit that has a voice changer, and he keeps changing his voice between Kaito and Kokichi’s to further muddle which one of them is actually dead. And to top it all off, not even Monokuma knows the solution to this mystery and you actually have to work together with him in order to solve it! Gotta hand it to Kodaka: this move was inspired. If only I actually gave a damn about Kaito, Kokichi and Maki, this case would hit much harder.

3. 100 Mile Dash; Pain of a Junk Food Junkie (DR1)

This time, the opposite holds true: I like these events as part of the over-arching story, especially everything that happens from the execution (the scariest one in the whole game, IMO) and onward. But when taken on its own, this chapter is a mess. Not only is the mystery and trial literally contrived by Monokuma in order to set a trap for one character, but it tips its hand too early by showing the discovery of the victim’s dead body well before it’s time for that scene to happen, and the constant flashing back to Kyoko telling Makoto about the existence of Mukuro Ikusaba is somewhere between comical and infuriating. I think the worst part is that there’s no permanent consequences for anyone: nobody actually dies in this chapter! Not the supposed victim Mukuro, not Monokuma, not Kyoko and not Makoto. It even turns out that Alter-Ego Chihiro managed to kind of survive its execution in the previous chapter! WTF? We’ve spent a whole game getting used to the finality of death, but now death is cheap!

Chapter 6:

1. Ultimate Despair + Goodbye Despair High School (DR1)

I think that DR2′s final chapter is arguably better, more epic and more conclusive than DR1′s, but I still can’t help but prefer DR1′s, similar to how I prefer Phoenix Wright’s “Turnabout Goodbyes” to Trial & Tribulations’ “Bridge to the Turnabout”. Everything about the overarching story and its mystery comes together perfectly here, Junko Enoshima never had the same villainous impact that she does here, and the conclusion where Makoto saves the day by becoming the Ultimate Hope, Junko puts herself through every execution in the game, and the surviving students open the door to an uncertain yet still hopeful future is just iconic.

2. This is the End, Goodbye Academy of Despair + The Day Before the Future (DR2)

Like I said, this one might be superior on a technical level, as it pulls out even bigger plot twists, features even deeper emotions and a greater sense of closure and catharsis, has a grander sense of scope, and Junko being given an even more final defeat since she’s a villain that if you want to defeat you can’t just kill physically but spiritually as well. Chiaki’s role here especially gets me choked up, and Hajime’s narration in the epilogue is the perfect note to end the story on....both the story of DR2 and the conjoined story of DR0, DR1 and DR2.  

3. Goodbye Danganronpa + Everyone’s Killing Game, Closing Ceremony (DRV3)

This is an ending that’s better watched than it is played. Watching it, it’s comedy gold in how absurd it is. But actually playing through it is a chore, and having to do such a chore for the sake of an ending that is intentionally designed to piss you off is no fun at all. While I’d say the game’s third chapter is technically worst, this one is definitely my least favorite, especially when you take that god-awful, pointless epilogue into account. Kodaka, if you want to end Danganronpa, then go all the way and end it on your terms; don’t pussy out with that crap!

And now, my final ranking of all the chapters is as follows:

Favorite thing about them - Honestly I didn’t originally like Angie much until I saw a comic that compared her to Kokichi and then I realized I really liked that interpretation. So I like that she has a far stronger, more unbreaking mask than Kokichi’s mask. Like is there even a single canon sad Angie sprite? I know she has a creepy/angry sprite...

Least favorite thing about them - The racism in her writing, eugh. I still don’t know what to do with her, as the person who writes for her in Twins AU. Do I completely rework her entire background? Do I keep it? What do I do with this girl...

Favorite line - Sadly she doesn’t have many memorable moments for me. I did like it when she started her cult and broke the flashback light. There’s a post that points out she was the first (well no, she’s not the first--sorry to say Angie fans, but Kokichi was actually the first, but she was the first to be blunt about it) to point out that the flashback lights are dangerous and the class shouldn’t be using them. The whole cult arc shows a lot of her character-someone kind of forced into a leadership role who knows how to manipulate people but doesn’t really know how to be a true leader. Kind of spoiled for being “god’s chosen one”, not used to being yelled at or being told “no”... I like the revelations about her personality in the cult plot.

Random headcanon - If I decide to go ahead and rewrite her entire backstory, I’m not going to completely dismiss the stuff from canon--in fact, I’m probably going to write it off as Angie trying to mess with people and see how much of her bullshit they’ll believe. 

Unpopular opinion - I think Angie’s writing needs a lot of reworking and Angie needs more character and depth. Aside from headcanons, she’s very... one note and flat. Give her development! Though idk if that’s an unpopular opinion...

Favorite thing about them - I really love the “wolf in sheep’s clothing” plot twist with her actually? Like it was something I wanted from the DR series for a while

Least favorite thing about them - Hm... She’s not very interesting? Maybe it’s because I’m not a super cosplay nerd, or maybe she’s of too average until the twist? I think making her far more appealing and likable/have something interesting about her that catches the viewer’s/player’s/reader’s attention would have made that betrayal all the more bitter and in that respect, kind of more satisfying (in a bad but good way.)Though, I think I personally would have been more mad about it in retrospect. I went into DRV3 knowing she was the mastermind, but I was under the impression she was an unwilling mastermind. I was really looking forward to seeing her motives and reasons and that sort of moral complexity was the only thing that kept me interested in her until I learned that I was lied to... I really wish she had been an unwilling mastermind, I would have been so down for that kind of morally complex situation.

Favorite line - She has a couple of good one liners, but tbh, I can’t really remember most of them. 

BrOTP - Uhhhhhhh... I need to see her Talent Development Plan stuff to see her interacting with others on a more friendly level (if she even does...) because I don’t have a lot of ideas as to how she’d behave in actual social situations. In V3, she was a part of the group sure, but she wasn’t... a part of it. She was kind of distant, not really seen making friends with anyone in particular. She seemed more like an acquaintance at most. 

OTP - None, to be honest. Though sometimes I imagine Tsumugi and Kiyo being into each other because............ well ya’ll know what they have in common.....

NOTP - I can’t imagine her with Kokichi or Kaito. Like I’ve actually seen people (who hate Kaito) pair him with her and I guess it has me bitter xD And aside from Maki being god awful to Kokichi, Tsumugi is the second worst (if not worse than Maki) because of how active she is at pinning everyone against Kokichi. Like holy shit. She’s hammering down that “he’s the outsider” shtick from day one. What a little--

Information Chapter One of Two: Kidnapped

A slap on the face jolted Kokichi awake. He looked up to see a stranger standing over him. He looked like he was trying to appear intimidating… and was succeeding. He didn’t need to know that.

Kokichi put on a mildly offended face. “That was awfully rude, don’t you think?” He tried to move his hands but unsurprisingly, his forearms were tied together behind his back. He could maybe wriggle out of them assuming the knots weren’t done by a professional or near-professional. But the large stranger looming over him probably wouldn’t let him get away with it.

“I can be a whole lot more than just rude kid,” the stranger replied. “Now make this easy for us both, answer all my questions and you’ll be let go unhurt, okay?”

“Sounds like a good deal.” Kokichi put on a smile now. His ankles were tied together too with a small about of space between them but not to the chair he’d been placed on. So, running away wasn’t a possibility but standing and hobbling was. It was just the two of them in a tiny room with a table so he could maybe get away for a short time if he was lucky and could hobble fast enough. The door was presumably behind him as he couldn’t see it. It was most likely locked though so escape was probably not going to happen right now. “What do you want to know?”

“Our sources tell us you’re good friends with the heir to the Kuzuryuu Clan. Tell us everything you know about him and the Clan.”

“Hmm… they’re a gang, right? They do illegal stuff like… murder people, I think, maybe? I don’t really know and I definitely don’t know the heir as friend or even an acquaintance. I couldn’t even tell you what his name is let alone any information you’d find useful.”

“I’m not falling for that act so you can go ahead and drop it. Don’t think I won’t torture you just because you’re a kid.”

“But I’m telling the truth, I would never lie.” He put on a fully offended face now. It was unlikely his lies would get him out of this – Fuyuhiko was actually his best friend and as a result he knew far more about the Kuzuyruu Clan than was safe which was the sole reason he was here, they wouldn’t have grabbed him if they weren’t a hundred percent sure of that – but it didn’t hurt to try, right? “So let me go now like you said you would.”

The man frowned and cracked his knuckles. “Last chance to tell the truth without getting hurt.”

“I told the truth, it’s not my fault you don’t believe me.”

The man grabbed the top of Kokichi’s head and slammed his face down onto the table. It hurt but Kokichi bore it even when it happened three more times, leaving him feeling a bit dizzy.

“You going to talk now you know I’m serious?”

Blood dripped from Kokichi’s nose and down from his forehead. He kept his face on though, no way was he going to give this guy the satisfaction of breaking him. “I already knew you were serious.” He known from the start where this was heading. “Someone as dumb as you wouldn’t know how to tell a lie if their life depended on it.”

“I’m going easy on you because you’re a kid but trust me when I say that won’t last long if you keep this up.”

“Good, I would hope a professional thug could do better than this. Beating up a defenseless high school student is a bit shameful though, don’t you think? You going to brag to your friends about how strong and tough you are? About how you beat up someone less than half your size who was also tied up? That’ll be a…”

The man slammed his face into the desk again. Thankfully only once this time. “Just tell us what you know about the Kuzuyruu Clan!” He was getting annoyed… good.

“Heh, you think this’ll make me tell you anything? You’re going to have to try harder than…” His face was slammed into the table again. “… t-this to do that. I don’t…” and again “break that easily. You’re…” and again. “… attempts at…” and again. “at uh…” and again.

He was awoken once more by another slap. It wasn’t particularly strong but it hurt like hell. His whole face hurt, like it had been run over by a car. It was rivaled only by his headache. There was no way something like that could crack his skull, right? It just hurt a lot.

“You going to tell me what I want to know now?” the thug said, sending a shiver down his spine at the reminder of his hopeless circumstances.

Kokichi groaned, turning his head to look at him, putting on a smile despite everything. “Sure, what do you want to know?”

“You know what I want to know brat.”

“But I don’t. I don’t even know my own name anymore. You seem to have given me amnesia.”

The thug frowned, not believing the lie for even a moment. To be fair it wasn’t a very good one, amnesia didn’t work like that. “I’ll admit, you’re tough for a kid. Though perhaps I should’ve expected it considering your ties to the Kuzuyruu family and the fact that your one of those ‘Ultimates’ yourself.”

“Yep, the Ultimate Supreme Leader. My secret organization has more than ten thousand members. So keeping me here is actually really dangerous for you and the rest of your little gang. So I suggest you let me go before I decide to make you and all your friends vanish so thoroughly no one will be able to prove you ever even existed.” It took all of Kokichi’s self-control to sound nonchalant and relaxed. Never before had wanted so badly for someone to believe his lies.

That gave the man pause. Not long, just a few seconds before he shook it off. “Bullshit. An organization that big couldn’t remain a secret, especially from us. You’re lying.”

“Do you know that for sure though? Do you really want to risk it? And all so you can get information on a rival gang that’s only slightly less petty than yours is.” He needed for this ploy to work if it didn’t, he was in for a lot more hurt… possibly even death. Telling them what they wanted to know was simply not an option.

“Shut up.” The thug slammed his face into the table again.

He had to grit his teeth to fight off the dizziness threating to send him into unconsciousness again. Passing out would be a mercy but it wasn’t worth giving his tormenters the satisfaction if he could help it.

Head hung and ears ringing, it took a couple seconds to realize his tormenter had left his side. The sound of the door opening and closing signaled the thug’s exit from the room.

Now was the time for Kokichi to try something to escape before the man came back with proper torture equipment. But he was suddenly shaking too much to do anything. He wanted to cry too but he couldn’t allow himself too; his hands were tied up so wiping away evidence of his tears would be impossible. While tears could be useful at times, they’d only make this situation worse.

He took a series of deep slow breaths and tried to stand but was too wobbly and fell back into the chair. Before he could try again the sound of the door opening came from behind him.

He froze, stilling his fearful tremors and putting back on a face of disinterest with an added touch of impatience. “You’ve come to free me after all? About time I was starting to get bored. Hurry and…”

“Shut up.” The thug walked into Kokichi’s line of sight once more. He was holding a disposable camera, getting ready to take a picture. Shit!

Kokichi quickly flashed a smile and winked, even flashing up a peace sign from behind his back just in time for the camera to click as it took his picture. “Warn me next time so I can…”

With an angry grunt, the thug grabbed the back of Kokichi’s chair and yanked him around to face him more properly. He then punched him in the gut, knocking the air out of him.

Kokichi coughed and sputtered but kept on his smile. “Nope, not happening.” How Fuyuhiko would react to the pictures exactly was hard to say but Kokichi didn’t want him to see how scared and hurt he was. It’d only make him feel worse about having to leave him here.

Another gut punch made it harder. And was it just his imagination or had he felt a rib crack that time? But still somehow, he managed to look up at his tormentor again, still smiling. At this point if he stopped, he’d cry instead so he had no choice.

The thug was thoroughly annoyed now, steam was practically coming out of his ears. It’d be funnier and very satisfying if it didn’t spell more pain for Kokichi but even so it was a good sight to see. He wound up for another punch. This one connected squarely with Kokichi’s face.

Fuyuhiko didn’t normally like looking through his mail as soon as he got home – it was more often than not entirely junk mail – but the envelope on top was unmarked other than for his name, peaking his curiosity. It didn’t even have a return or send address, implying it had been delivered by hand. So he grabbed the stack and carried it up to his room to investigate.

Naturally Peko followed him even though he didn’t need a bodyguard in his own home. But her company was almost always welcome. He tossed the junk mail onto his desk as he sat down.

Inside the envelope was two photographs and a letter. He pulled the photos out first and froze.

Kokichi, a scary amount of blood oozing down his face, smiled, winking at the camera. His arms were bound behind his back but he was hunched forward enough that the peace sign he was flashing was just visible. It was… a good lie, most of his lies were but that only made it worse somehow. If it wasn’t for the blood and bound arms, Fuyuhiko wouldn’t have thought anything was amiss in the photo.

“Young Master?” Peko said from across the room. “You okay?”

Ignoring her for now, Fuyuhiko looked at the second photo. He wasn’t sure if it was worse or ever so slightly better than the first one. Kokichi lay on the floor, clearly unconscious, blood still oozing down his face. But at least his false but far too realistic smile was gone.

“What is it?” Peko was right in front of him now.

With shaking hands, he handed the photos to her. She was the only one who knew how he felt about Kokichi – there were a few rumors floating around among the members of the gang but nothing concrete. Not even Kokichi knew, he’d been meaning to finally tell him soon but… now he might not ever get the chance to.

Those assholes were gong to pay. He was going to gut every single one of them.

“Who sent these?” Peko asked with that cold note in her voice that promised murder.

“I don’t know. They sent a note though so let’s see.” They were going to regret this. He was going to make sure of it. They were sorely mistaken if they didn’t think he wouldn’t bring the wrath of the entire Kuzuyruu Clan down on them for this.

Pre-Execution

The crowd in the theater has dispersed, the lights are off, the cleaning crew has come and gone, and now that everything is quiet and all eyes are looking elsewhere, here they are.

K1-b0 smiled because he knew, damn it. How was he able to avoid hitting them? Or was it that he was shooting blindly (as guided by the outside world) and just had to ‘hope’ for their survival? And when he saw that they had somehow made it, he had the peace of heart and strength to open the dome for them?

Comic relief to the end, huh. Well, it’s probably nice to have someone to keep the mood a bit lighter! It’s interesting seeing them lined up like this, actually. A trio of introverts, and a red/black colour palette. Even if Shuichi’s hair does lean on the blue side, it’s still incredibly muted. There is no way that wasn’t a deliberate choice, but I wonder why....

Ah, and for that matter, Tsumugi and K1-b0 really did trend toward blue themselves. Red vs blue is a pretty classic colour clash in fiction, right? .... Ah, and Kaito’s shirt even had the red kabuki print/make-up representing the ‘hero’ character, right? While ‘blue’ was always the villainous make-up? Maybe I’m reaching a bit, but it wouldn’t surprise me if that was deliberate. if I really want to continue down this rabbit hole, Kaede/Kaito/Kokichi being purple because they straddled the line between hero/villain in the game would therefore be the next logical leap hmm

In the wreckage, I suppose. So... what can we see? What is there to see?

It’s a bright light.... and very obviously not the ruined world from the escape tunnel. .... Right?

Closing ceremonies, complete with the original sprite for Shuichi....

So they can see.... something. But not enough. Nothing clear enough for them to know what they’re getting into.

And look at that... the starry sky, both morning and night. I think I mentioned previous how important ‘nighttime’ was in this game; how all the murders seemed happen chronologically (except Tenko’s, of course, but even that took place in complete darkness). From Kaede’s murder at nighttime, to Kokichi’s death near the end of the night - and then, of course, to the final trial, which took place at the crack of dawn, only for them to be brought down into an artificial darkness again - it just seems so fitting that after all of that, the false sky is both day and night. Dawn and dusk.

  It’s a place full of promise, and also so, so much danger.

The fact that you guys didn’t get crushed by rubble is, frankly, incredible. I’m not mad about it at all, but I’m just saying.

Did they have a way of getting food/water here? I guess if the show ends, there’s not going to be any of that anymore... whatever pathway they had would be entirely shut down.

I get that he was acting as the eyes for the audience so him surviving would have been dangerous for their safety! And that his self-destruct button probably had the power they needed to get them out, even more than his lasers apparently!

I want to hope that there was a little bit of K1-b0 let to save them, but... the idea of them wanting them to live, despite outliving their ‘usefulness’, is a nice thought too. It certainly means they’ll be in better shape to handle what comes at them when they cross over to the other side.

That is pretty awfully brave for someone with an uberfan like Sweetchi97 wanting to break your fingers, but yes! Right! With confidence!

That would probably be a nice change from what they had to go through, at this point... but god, how bitter would that make them, to know that they were created for that. I mean, we obviously saw it in the trial, but getting to live in that peaceful world after going through this would be a totally different experience.

YEAH! YEAH WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT ABOUT?! WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN -

I mean it implies that she was copying, potentially, maybe the real Junko - I mean, I’m pretty sure that’s the immediate thought we’re supposed to have, right?

Which... could work. But we need to account for the audience. There was clearly an audience that was able to affect K1-b0 in real time, and also react to the trial in real time, right? And that same audience was able to turn on Tsumugi, too...

THE WHOLE FICTION BIT WAS A SURPRISE ANYWAY HOW CAN YOU GO EVEN FARTHER AT THIS POINT

Yeah, because there are definitely.... weird things that I remember. The original opening versus what we saw here. There is probably a lot to unpack in that original game-opening chapter. The kidnapping they all remembered, for one thing...

They were definitely a lot more scared, right? And there wasn’t a weird gap between what we saw and the flashback light that followed, right? I mean, we did get an unreliable narrator in Kaede ala Chapter 1 - but it was there between the lines of the text. This would be a complete omission.

So only the players will ever have access to that memory - none of the survivors will ever ‘remember’ that. That’s quite the luxury we have, to be able to rewind and look over ‘forgotten scenes’ like that.

because that would be absolutely mind-boggling to throw yourself into a torture/killing game and erase your entire self so you don’t even get the side-benefit of enjoying it, even if you are so obsessively into it?

There may be records, though. But to us outside the game - they may as well not exist so, fair. unless the gopher project list was actually the repurposed academy list just sayin’

Fiction inside fiction? A world where this was a knock-off of the real Danganronpa? Something else entirely? The possibility for lies and fantasy are limitless. Until they see the truth themselves, there’s no way to know.

It’s pretty strange - they’ve been trapped in this bubble the entire time, with their reality being projected to everyone outside the walls. Normally the catbox would be inside of the sealed space - but this time, it’s everything outside.

.... If it’s anything like our world, then... yeah. It probably is.

This does sound a bit like the writing team’s way of saying, ‘Look, we actually care a lot for you guys playing, promise! Even if the idea of the previous two games being fictional within a fictional world was heart-breaking, just remember that it’s the feelings that they drew from you at the time and even now that really matter in the end!’

I think... to borrow from the vernacular of the game, the proper way to read this is to see lies as ‘stories’. Beautiful stories told to make the world a better place - or to even inspire the real world to become better. There are inventions and leaps in technology that only came about because they were inspired by fiction! Lies becoming truths... honestly, our current era is proof of that, for good or for ill.

And hell, stories are often a vehicle of delivering a message or certain truth to the audience, right?

Moving bravely forward. Good damn luck, kids. You’re going to need it... but you can handle it. I believe in you.

This... really is like the ending scene from the first game, complete with the ambiguity. We just have to hope that things will work out for them. I think... we can believe that things will turn out okay.

I… I made a chatfic tie-in of my HPA AU. It’s to make up for the lack of exposure of the other v3 kids in the comics ;w; also, chat fics are fun (and easier) to write (since my strength is with dialogue– I’m not really good at writing descriptions that’s why i just draw them lol)

My (post game) opinions on the ndrv3 cast

Alright, before the game came out I made this post where I basically vomited out my opinions on how I felt about the newly revealed ndrv3 cast onto a post and it was 50% jokes, 50% venting at fangirls. But now I've actually played the game, delved into the fandom and looked at the changes between the Japanese and English versions, I feel I can make a more genuine list of how I feel about all these good kids that deserved better. I realize my opinions are just that, and I’m probably yelling into the void here. But I felt I had to do a followup to the last post because MY GOD WAS I WRONG ABOUT (MOST) THINGS. I've listed every character in ‘favorite to least favorite’ order for convenience sake. Also this post will contain Spoilers. You have been warned.

Placed under a break for your skipping convenience. Ya’ll are welcome.

1. Himiko Yumeno - I absolutely adore everything about Himiko. Her design, her lazy attitude, her voice (NYEH), her development across the game to become a more driven and energetic person...I found her really funny, really cute and oddly relatable. Himiko is probably in my top 5 DR characters of all time. Which is even crazier when I remember she’s one of the few survivors. I've never had a favorite character who survives a killing game before. So unlike past Dangan Ronpa games where my interest sorta dies off by Chapter 6, Himiko kept me fully invested in everything until the end. She’s a special bean and I love her.

2. Gonta Gokuhara - Continuing the DR trend of a Big Guy who’s a Big Friend, Gonta was so good and so pure and so friendly and deserved so much better. He was always trying to do his best and protect everyone until the very end. R.I.P Gonta. You were a true gentleman. Chapter 4 can suck my ass.

3. Tenko Chabashira - I literally D E S P I S E D Tenko when she was first revealed. I hated her stupid, sexist guts. But come Ndrv3′s release and Tenko turned out to be a dorky, kind, protective and strong willed girl who was skilled enough to be admirable but pathetic enough to be pitiable at the same time. I loved her undying adoration of Himiko (even if it was a bit creepy at times) and the two make a really cute ship. I was expecting some kind of tragic backstory in her FTE’s to explain why she hates men (I believe she mentions a drunken father at one point, and I really wish they went more into that), and the lack of a reasonable explanation for such a strong hatred is what prevents her from sharing (or even taking) the top spot in my book. But misandry aside, Tenko is a Great Gal and I wanna hug her. Although she’d probably bodyslam me.

4. Kirumi Tojou - Kirumi was my favorite when all the characters were revealed at first. I made multiple posts about how I’d die for her and how she was beautiful and whatnot and I was confident about two things when the game came out: 1) She’d be my favorite. And 2) She’d die - following in the footsteps of all previous ‘best girls’ before her. And well, I did really like her. Just...not as much as I thought I would. Kirumi is efficient, brave, elegant, caring and has a really cool design. But her talent occupies most of who she is as a person, and she isn't too dissimilar to most maid characters in anime or manga. So it made her quite predictable at times and I feel they could’ve done so much more with her..ah well. Kirumi is still a super awesome maid and a great Mom. Even if she hates being called that.

5. Kaede Akamatsu - Ahh...I remember when I was wishing someone else would be our protagonist when she was first announced...I think I cursed it. Because Kaede was just *incredible*. She was headstrong, perceptive, kind and left such a big impact on me after Chapter 1. You know that ‘Do It For Her’ meme? Yeah, that about summarizes the rest of Ndrv3 for me. Also Kaede is a huge gay and all the Ndrv3 girls are her girlfriends, pass it on.

6. Ryouma Hoshi - Congratulations to Ryouma for being the only non-standard design character not to be terrible. Far from it, in fact. Ryouma is a badass! A lil’ badass with such a depressing backstory and death that when they showed his motive video, I let out a single manly tear. Or several. Or many. I just...I just want this man to be happy...

7. Miu Iruma - Miu has zipped up and down my lists more than any other character. I had her ranked highly pre-game, lowly during the game, and mid/high post-game. Her design and talent are really cool and she makes several neat inventions over the course of the game, but her personality was so damn prickly and vulgar that I found her really offputting while she was alive. It was only after finishing her FTE’s and seeing her Love Hotel scene that I realized holy shit this girl has some serious trust and abandonment issues. It put all of her behavior in perspective and I began to feel really sorry for her all of a sudden. The hurt/comfort potential here is just WAITING to be uncovered but, alas, most Miu fanfics I've come across are just smut or crackfics. Out of all the Ndrv3 girls, Miu deserves the most headpats. Lots and lots of headpats.

8. Kaito Momota - A good, supportive friend and an effective comic relief. His optimism was a bit grating for me now and again (I never like it when DR plays the ‘’Oh we should just believe in him/her because s/he’s our friend :)’’ card because of how biased it always is. Like, DR will sometimes bend over backwards and completely 180 its own rules to make sure certain characters survive. In a game where finding the truth by objective evidence and fact is key, the times where it just says ‘’nah fuck the truth who needs proof just b e l i e v e’’ just feel so...stupid). But criticisms of the series aside, Kaito is a bro and he’s great. Who doesn’t love the luminary of the stars?

9. Kokichi Ouma - I realise putting the most popular character at 9th is going to make hoards of fangirls despise me but!!!! I don’t dislike Kokichi. In fact I like him a lot. His character is probably the most enjoyable to analyze out of everyone, his interactions are hilarious but also disturbing, the Kokichi memes are funny, and I too think the changes they made to his dialogue in the English translation was utter bullshit (almost as greater character assassination as Mukuro in the DR3 anime). But, I really love most of the characters in the game which leaves characters I’m torn on (like Kokichi or Kiyo) hovering at a position which makes it seem like I dislike them when actually I enjoy them immensely. Just...not as consistently as some of the others. Also Chapter 4 was an kick to the nads that I can’t get over. Sorry Kokichi.

10. Korekiyo Shinguuji - I was prepared to LOVE this guy so much. Seriously. I was ready for the moment where it would turn out creepy noodle man would be turn out to be a Wholesome noodle man. But uh, I think I’m with the rest of the fandom when I say that Korekiyo’s reveal as the SHSL incestuous serial killer made me drop him faster than Kirumi dropped in her execution (sorry). So, now I've establish Kork is the *real* Worst Boy...why did I put him at 10th? Why not 15th? Especially considering he killed Tenko? Truthfully, it’s the memes. Just...the Kork memes. And the fact he’s such an awful person and so obviously a murderer that it becomes genuinely hilarious to me. And his design is my favorite out of all of them. I’m so split on him. So, so split...

11. K1-B0 - Keebo made me laugh a bunch of times, and I enjoyed him more than I thought I would initially. Also his upgrades in Chapter 6 were badass as fuck. But I just don’t really feel the same affection for him like I do other characters. I’m afraid cute robot girls will always be my weakspot. Cute robot boys...not so much. (Although I’m all for Agender! Keebo that’s my jam).

12. Shuichi Saihara - This is the point in my list where I finally reach true neutral. I have no feelings on Shuichi either way. He’s deeper and has a more interesting plot arc than Makoto, which makes him a more effective protagonist in my opinion. But Hinata will always be the best protagonist in my book. And I just keep picturing what it would’ve been like if Kaede survived instead...

13. Rantaro Amami - I never understood why he was uber popular before the game came out and I don’t think I understand why he’s so popular now either. I have no negative feelings on the guy; he’s mysterious and has a ‘big brother’ attitude that I like. But the poor dude just died too quickly for me to feel anything for him. 

14. Maki Harukawa - I only dislike three characters in this game. Maki is one of them. I knew *exactly* what kind of character she was going to be and I knew I wouldn’t like her much and I knew she was going to survive. I didn’t guess she was going to be an assassin! But outside of that, There isn’t much going for me for me. The tsundere is never an archetype I like and the fact the deaths in Chapters 2 and 5 are partly her fault and no one calls her out on it is kinda frustrating also. 

15. Angie Yonaga - Angie’s creepiness is her most appealing trait to me. That should explain how low the bar is set here. Its difficult to write what I feel about her without coming across as a salty atheist (because most of her problems revolve around her use of her god to manipulate people) so I’m just going to leave it there.

16. Tsumugi Shirogane - Y’know I distinctly remember labelling Tsumugi as ‘’Hifumi but likable’’ on my previous Ndrv3 opinion post. I was wrong. She was hovering around mid/low level for me while I played the game, and I often forgot she existed (kinda funny considering her self admitted plainness) and her references were quite obscure a lot of the time so I didn’t find her funny either. I didn’t dislike her, I just forgot her. Then Chapter 6 happened and everyone knows the rest. It’d be difficult to truly ‘like’ Tsumugi after her reveal as the mastermind, after all. Although she was certainly entertaining when she started cosplaying as all the previous characters and I did like how her eyes glowed when she went all DanganRonpa crazy. I did actually consider putting her above Angie for those reasons, but if I dropped Kokichi’s placement because he killed Gonta then I’d be a hypocrite if I didn’t slamdunk Tsumugi into last place for technically being responsible for everyones’ deaths as well (well, responsible as part of Team DanganRonpa. I understand it wasn’t *entirely* her behind it all). You know there’s a problem when *Hifumi* looks pure in comparison...

What an interesting reaction. Despite the weird back and forth she’s been having with Monokuma, he still had the Monokubs jump in to defend her - though with that said, the desperation of it all probably backfired in Shuichi’s eyes. The point is, her first reaction wasn’t to protest - I mean, she will, and she did a bit weakly earlier, but it’s to withdraw into herself and think. Isn’t that how we first came across her? Thinking deeply to herself and completely ignoring Kaede and Shuichi to the best of her abilities?

A-are you attempting to plead ‘power of friendship’ right now -

“There is no time for friendship in the court of law!!!”

Clinging to that idea is the only thing he had to keep himself going all this time, too.

Also, after pushing behind the scenes for him to condemn three of the most well-meaning people in the class (and, y’know, Kirumi and Korekiyo lol), it’s interesting that she seems to think that this line of defense will work - especially considering what he’s accusing her of doing. You’ve managed to do something way beyond just murder, Tsumugi! Aside from Rantaro, you set the groundwork for everything that followed! And I feel like this game, more than the others, really pushed the idea that the survivors share some of the blame when the ‘blackened’ dies. I don’t agree with that mind you, but survivor’s guilt is very real and very powerful.

Despite all of this, he still wants to be wrong and is happy to be wrong. Being awfully, painfully right seems to be a running trend with him, with the one glaring exception hanging over his head.

What was the signal that clued Tsumugi in on leaving, I wonder? Maybe she waited a certain amount of time after seeing Rantaro leave with the others? Would she have been willing to wait longer if she needed to for Kaede’s plan to either work or not work, or was she counting on it happening in that five minute span?

This was a pretty damn good set-up by Kaede.

This is another redundant picture because.... I’m not sure. I like this group together. We didn’t know anything about them at this point in the game, but they really did try so hard - and hell, Tenko, who I never got to know that well, was already putting aside her own bias this early in the game to work with Kaito for everyone’s sake. aaah now i’m getting sad

Which was so believable because even Kaede thought it was the truth! I’m so torn. I really like Kaede, and honestly? I like the fact that she was willing to go after the mastermind so aggressively. Tsumugi did twist the truth, sure, and we convicted the wrong person - but I don’t want to lose the fact that Kaede only didn’t kill Rantaro because her calculations were slightly off and Tsumugi cleaned up after her. I keep going back to it, but that line of Kokichi’s, telling Kaede she lost the moment she let murder into her heart, does still ring true to me...

Himiko and the others are trying to stay on track though - on the idea that there are viewers to the madness. At first I thought, ‘oh, that’s a bit of a tangent though’ then I remembered Kokichi was the one who gave us the tools to get all the evidence to prove that so it actually does make sense to bring it back up now!

I’ve only ever been posting snippets of the their silly school life (without following a chronological timeline of events) so here’s some context of how I characterized the ndrv3 kids (essentially the same personalities but with some tweaks) and maybe some info on the relationships in my comics. Implied and outright spoilers, apparently. The rest under the cut.

Kaede Akamatsu: The ‘protagonist spotlight’ mostly falls on her. Personality-wise, she’ll still be the ever cheerful, charming and kind Kaede (with a toned down self-righteousness) but with a dash of her pre-game personality which is being mistrustful and to an extent, condescending. 

Angie Yonaga: Angie is still Angie, but with added eccentricities. Since she her character design kind of implies she’s from an island in the West (okay, Hawaii) which is part of America, she’s going to be referencing memes and western culture.

Kirumi Tojo: Her maid shtick is a conscious effort for her. She has selfish whims and insecurities deep down that calm, collected and altruistic persona that she tries to project. (in-game Tojo was just too one dimensional, ugh)

Tenko Chabashira: She mostly maintains her enthusiastic, down to earth, protective (of the girls) nature but she won’t be too vocal about her aversion towards the MENaces (it was so overdone in the game to the point of being annoying) and with a short temper. Will probably have a sad or comical (still can’t decide which lol) backstory about why she dislikes DEGENERATE MALES.

Himiko Yumeno: Mostly the same with her in-game personality but isn’t dismissive of human interaction. Apart from her “I’m a mage, not a magician” gag, she’s suspected to be always on drugs by most. Secretly stays up late a lot to watch k-drama.

Maki Harukawa: Still anti-social and uptight but it won’t be because of her talent (which is outright revealed to be Ultimate Assassin)… she just hates talking to people her age (lol). Also, her backstory won’t be the same in-game coz that seemed intentionally sad in context, but it’s strangely out of place in a peaceful AU like this. She’s still from an orphanage and serves as an elder sister figure. She was physically conditioned and trained to be an assassin but it turns out it was just a complicated plot to make her a Motion Capture stunt girl for an Assassin’s Creed game. So yeah, she hasn’t really killed anyone in real life but she physically (and mentally??) can, if desired.

Tsumugi Shirogane: She won’t think she’s a plain jane nor will she make an effort to remain a ‘wallflower.’ She’s into a lot of fandoms, naturally. She also stans Junko Enoshima (who isn’t a Despair junkie btw) and makes vague references about “being in a reality show,” (wink, wink)

Miu Iruma: Same ol’ Miu, but will try to make an effort to be likeable. Also has standards, so no she is not going to do lewd things with Teru Teru-sempai.

Shuichi Saihara: Since no one has to die for his character development, it’s going to take awhile for him to remove his hat. At first, he’s still meek and unconfident but not codependent on Kaede. Also adding a dash of his pre-game personality, him being an avid fanboy of all things detective (stans Kyoko Kirigiri, has a sizable collection of Nancy Drew Books and Detective Conan manga etc). Struggles with depression at times.

Kokichi Ouma: Compulsive lying is dumbed down and has his limits with his intentional assholery. His genuinely caring personality will also peek through a lot and he won’t vehemently deny it that much.

Rantaro Amami: Carefree, easygoing and fabulously gay big brother figure of the class. Makes vlogs in the style of Bear Grylls’ Man VS Wild. He also references the Danganronpa franchise plots (except V3) in his stories of his adventures.

Kaito Momota: Still quite sexist but it’s more because of upbringing rather than intentional. He doesn’t just suddenly develop an incurable, deadly disease but he has Tuberculosis (hence, coughs a lot). And, he’s very competitive (his pre-game personality repackaged).

Ryoma Hoshi: Mostly detached and stoic but not depressive and unfeeling. I’m tweaking his backstory a bit coz an ex-con that has served prison time going back to high school is a bit weird (and I don’t want the “HPA pulling shady shenanigans” shtick). His family has been murdered and all he has left is the family cat (that he gets to keep in the dorms) and he’s been pursuing leads about the mafia responsible for it. He’s basically a Sasuke Uchiha here. Anyway, he’s wise but vindictive. Fortunately, he doesn’t want to serve justice with his own hands.

Korekiyo Shinguji: Doesn’t have a sister complex and definitely not a compulsive serial killer here. He’s already got an interesting, creepy persona. Miyadera is alive, but still sickly and would visit him often to bring him home-cooked meals. Unsurprisingly has a fascination for see-saws.

Gonta Gokuhara: still the best boy best boy best boy raised in the mountains He won’t be too gullible here and would even join in roasting Kokichi.

Keebo Idabashi: He’s the Ultimate Robotics Engineer since he’s not a robot. Spent most of his life sheltered (even from the internet) so he’s shy and quite socially inept. Always gets very defensive of his talent.

And now, for the platonic and romantic ships~ I actually multiship but in this AU I’m going to stick to one ship for a particular person since I’m personally not keen on polyamory. (please don’t burn me on a stake)

Kaede||Shuichi: Saimatsu BROTP; in fact, they refer to each other by first name. I didn’t want this to be an “OTP” here since Saimatsu was mostly set up and situational in-game because of Shuichi’s codependency and Kaede’s desire to break him out of his shell, though undeniably they do have a really good chemistry together. Really, I love Saimatsu just-- let them explore their options. (I’m also just bitter I couldn’t flirt more using Kaede after Chapter 1 ;w;)

Kaede|Kirumi: I’m not inconspicuous about it actually lol idk I just see a good chemistry between them. Also, think of the mom jokes since they’re both the class moms. And while my comics tend to jump back and forth chronologically, if I was going to write a fic– their relationship is a slow burn with lots of pining

Shuichi|Kokichi: Their love hotel scene oh my god Kokichi really has it bad and that little liar is a good match for Sai, he facilitated his growth in a (twisted) way but this is an AU so yeah. Beforehand, Kokichi has a slight interest in Rantaro.

Maki|Kaito: This is a canon-ish ship that had a weird development too, but again, they have a nice chemistry too. I wanna explore that normal, potential development between them (also, I’m not sayin they’re both necessarily straight coz this is a straight ship lol).

Himiko|Tenko: There’s just… a lot of potential cuteness in them, even though they were kind of dysfunctional in canon. The fact that they’re polar opposites when it comes to physical activities gives me enough cannon fodder for their tandem. And Himiko being involved with Tenko can really help her a lot (like when the latter’s death in-game impacted her so much).

Kaito||Kokichi: Sort of a Oumota reference lol Chapter 5 gave me an inkling of their dynamics together and it was nice to see that Kaito gave Kokichi a leap of faith despite all his atrocities. So, I think they’d be good friends in the AU, just laced with a lot of badmouthing and insulting each other.

Rantaro||Tsumugi: Mastermind and Survivor solidarity~ They’re good friends in middle school before entering HPA.

Miu||Keebo: They’re both socially inept techie nerds sitting at the back of the class so finding friendship with each other isn’t far from happening. I lowkey shipped them in the game but I haven’t decided in this AU yet~

Yeah well I straight-up procrastinated finishing the trial because...... well DO I REALLY NEED TO SAY IT. AHHH EVERYTHING HURTS

He could barely say the words.

MEANWHILE GRANDMASTER WEENIE EXTRAORDINAIRE OVER HERE IS CHIRPING AWAY -

But then holy shit, screaming at me, at everyone else, and honestly like fuck, it feels like he’s literally screaming at me, that’s how raw it is -

And onto his third persona, the Supreme Leader of Evil - that’s what you called yourself, right? And they all have their own distinct voices, and distinct cadences - is that the face you want associated with the truth?

Like everyone else before him, huh?

Oh come on, please stop Kokichi, please. I can’t... take much more of this...

He’s not yelling at Shuichi, but he certainly isn’t accepting anything he has to say, either. And oh, hey, I feel like Kaito said this about Kaede too in the first trial? I feel like Shuichi is having flashbacks right now.

Interestingly enough, the triumphant ‘turning around the trial’ music is coming on now that Kaito is countering - and it’s definitely going to be with something Shuichi is going to knock down - while with Kokichi and the actual truth of the case, it’s all been the very ominous music. Maybe it’s just because we had a short stint of having a musician-type character as our protagonist, but I feel like the way they use music in the game is very important and something to watch out for.

That’s actually not a bad point, Kaito! And honestly, I want to make sure I give him credit - he’s not all bluster. He’s not just talking out of his ass, even if he’s reaching - he really is trying to find solid evidence of Gonta not being the possibility, though unfortunately he’s doing it without presenting an alternative - which, you know, we’d need so familiar, eh Battler? But..... ah, the toilet paper....

And of course, the other classmates rally behind Kaito, with the obvious exception of Kokichi and Shuichi - and K1-b0, for that matter. He’s been rather... I don’t know, subdued during the trial? Which is interesting in itself, but... hm...

for fuck’s sake don’t raise his hopes up

These moments in his internal dialogue are so important...

I would hate to be Gonta right now, having to stand there and watch people debate your guilt with absolutely no way to input or know the truth yourself. And of course, seeing people he considers friends arguing that you murdered someone who, and I cannot stress this enough, you have no memory of killing and, as far as you know, no motive to kill!

Kaito... tried to reach out to Gonta, earlier in this chapter. I noticed it. It was too little, too late, but he tried, damn it. It’s - not necessarily related to this exact moment, or this sprite - but seeing him like this with such a devastated face just reminded me of how he was trying to tell Gonta that he wasn’t useless, that having him around was important...

And fml, he’s just seeing his failure to reach out sooner crash around him. We didn’t get to talk about it much, but Kaito has a pretty big list of people he regrets not helping more that he has lost during the game too - Kaede, Ryoma, and now, Gonta...

The classmates are reluctantly convinced but I don’t care as much about their opinions compared to the one person who really matters. And... he seems, though it took him time to process, convinced. And unlike Kaito, he isn’t fighting back.................

Menacing evil chess master Kokichi is back, but...

Every extremely hateful thing Kokichi has said this trial has been accompanied with a face like ^ and man, this does not scream ‘pleasure’ to me at all. 

OH HOLY FUCK YES SHUICHI!!! YES! YES! FUCK YES OWN IT!

H-He stopped Kokichi right in his tracks! Is it just general speechlessness from how ballsy Shuichi suddenly was, or the unpredictability factor again? And unlike with Himiko earlier, he doesn’t have a quip about how it was okay when they were bullying him earlier.

Ah, and here’s the constant theme we’ve had with Shuichi - in his backstory, with Kaede, with Kirumi and now, with Gonta, he has had empathy for a killer - and I find myself thinking back to both Maki’s comment about there being a thin line between detective and criminal, and his time working under his uncle and how he had to track/observe people. I don’t think we’re going to see him commit a murder (after losing Kaede I would be shocked) but perhaps he can see himself in their position? He certainly has the know-how to commit a difficult murder, and in Kaede’s case, he had the same goal as Kaede - to pin down the mastermind - but he just didn’t take it as far as she did.

It’s also interesting to contrast against the other thing I keep saying about him - how he seems to struggle as far as emotional intelligence goes, but damn it, the boy tries. While he does need to grow past the issues he had with that murderer he caught before the game and understand that he did make the right decision, losing the part of him that tries to understand and look past the immortal actions of the culprit would be a huge loss...

Gosh there was a lot going on in the closing argument comic that I couldn’t bring myself to skip over - please indulge this foolish person.

Shuichi brings up an interesting possibility -  that the avatar error may have changed/effected Gonta’s personality while he was in the game. But I don’t recall anything sticking out to me during our time in there?

Miu is incredibly cute here and I felt obligated to point that out.

Also, I find the way they simplified Kokichi’s hair to be very interesting. I’m trying to put my finger on why....

His VA is absolutely knocking it out of the park, btw. FML the way he’s choking up...

OMG there are so many people that have the potential of making an attempt on Kokichi’s life next chapter - Maki, Tsumugi, Kaito... well, not that I think Kaito has it in him, but with that said, this chapter was a hell of a game-changer so honestly? Who knows.
