The Compromise
JaTD Janther fanfiction
Tumblr media
Jane Turnkey is now of age to be wed. As a Lady of the Court, Adeline and Milton plan to marry her off as is tradition for girls her age. However, Jane worries how this will effect her knighthood. She plans to sabotage the whole thing, but in the end, will she be forced to compromise?
Words: 22,321 Chapters: 10/?
I know the JaTD fanbase is really small, but I've recently been working on a fanfiction for it featuring the rival-lover duo of my childhood. I new to writing fanfiction and am so far pleased with how this is turning out. I can already tell my style and quality of writing has improved a lot since the beginning of the story to the most recent chapters. If there are any people still alive in this fandom, please check out my story <3

Jane and the Dragon Character Profiles - Lady In Waiting
Tumblr media
LADY IN WAITING Full name: Adeline Turnkey Age: 36 years Before marrying Jane’s father, Adeline’s family name was d’Ark. NICKNAMES: Most of the Court call her ‘My Lady.’ Jane does too, but she is also allowed to call her ‘mother’ in private. Dragon has several names for her, including ‘Goose Neck’ because of her high, stiff collars, and ‘Chalky’ because of the powdered chalk she uses to whiten her face. JOB DESCRIPTION: Her main role is to attend to the Queen, to ‘wait’ in attendance ready to carry out duties. She is the Queen’s dresser and also looks after the Royal children. Because it is a small castle with a small staff, she also has the duty of overseeing the smooth running of the castle. ADELINE'S HISTORY: Adeline was born to nobles in the Royal Court; her father was John d’Ark, First Knight to the king. The year Adeline was born, 776, the royal family were still in exile in the catacombs. She was only one-years-old when her father died leading the diversionary assault on the main gate to retake the castle. It was the year of the Great Returning and Adeline never attends the celebrations to honor that victory.
Tumblr media
FAVORITE FOOD: Roasted chestnuts. One of her earliest memories is of dancing with her mother through a crunchy carpet of red and gold autumn leaves. They were out picking the fallen chestnuts which they roasted that night by an open fire. Adeline looks forward to autumn each year and to collecting chestnuts with Jane. It is one of the few activities they still do together as mother and daughter. AMBITION: Her ambition was for Jane to become a lady in waiting, marry a noble, and produce a great many grandchildren for her. That dream has gone and she finds herself a little lost and confused when thinking about the future. FAVORITE SONG: Jester wrote a ballad celebrating Adeline’s father, John d’Ark. It is called ‘The First Knight.’ She refuses to let it be played in public, but Jester knows she secretly likes it, and he will play it on a late summer evening while sitting alone on the steps of the Royal Conservatory. He had done so once and Jane told him she had spotted her mother in the shadows of the balcony above, listening quietly FAVORITE PASTIMES: Cards. Adeline is a fearsome card player.

You know it’d kind of be ironically funny if one of the reasons Adeline didn’t want to Jane to become a knight was “How will she find a husband?” Only for what seems to be every man on the continent to want Jane

*modern...ish au? I can picture this happening in an au in the 1900s, mostly*
*The Turnkey family is traveling on a train*
Adeline, relaxing in her seat: The scenery, the gentle sound of the train tracks...Ah, this was how man was meant to travel.
Milton: Where's Jane?
Adeline: She told me she was going to explore the train.
Jane, standing on the roof of the moving train: *hangs over and presses her palms against Adeline's window, smiling.*
Adeline and Milton: *scream*
Adeline: You told me you were going to explore the train!
Jane, having been forced to return to her seat: I WAS exploring!

Adeline: Have fun with Dragon! Don't do anything I wouldn't do. Jane: But you said 'have fun.' Adeline: ...

*modern AU where instead of being literal knights, Jane and the main cast are performers at a Renaissance fair type thing* *Jane is about to publicly duel someone for the first time* *she doesn't think her parents, who don't approve, will come, but they do* Jane: You're here! Milton: We wouldn't miss this for the world! We almost didn't get here in time. Adeline: We took a bus. It was HARROWING.

Evil/corrupt! John D'ark ramblings from the Discord
So when discussing the concept of Jester becoming evil, or being Brought Back Wrong in a Dragonblade AU (you can see amazing fanart @thelightfantastik did of this concept on her blog) the topic of ghosts in JATD came up, and I started wondering what the ghost of John D'ark would be like, and what it would be like if he was evil/corrupted, so here are some of my thoughts:
-One possibility for him getting Corrupted is that dying/becoming a ghost warps a person's identity and/or memories, resulting in the once noble Sir D'ark developing more "extreme" versions of previously held traits, like loyalty to his kingdom turning into nationalism and hatred of other kingdoms, or healthy self-esteem turning into boastful pride.
-Another possibility for his Corruption would be that, as a ghost, he heard nothing but praise for his own heroism over the years (he has a statue and a ballad written about him and everything) and gradually became more and more self-absorbed, a celebrity getting blinded by fame. I kinda like this idea more because it feels more plausible and organic.
-My concept for Corrupted! D'ark would that he would have become very self-absorbed, and obsessed with his "glory days" and what he sees as the glory days of Kippernia, and wants to restore the old ways of the kingdom, possibly trying to use a living person as a pawn to do it.
-Corrupted! D'ark would believe that women shouldn't be knights and that dragons and humans couldn't coexist. Whether he held these beliefs in life, or gained them in death, is unclear. But I don't think it would be too much of a stretch for an archaic knight to believe things like that. Jane struggled against bigotry like that even in her more "modern" setting.
-Imagine an AU where manipulative supernatural forces are clearly at play, trying to separate Jane and Dragon and placing obstacles in Jane's way as she tries to become a knight. Jane and Dragon are desperate to find out who's out to get them, only to come face-to-face when the ghost of Jane's grandfather.
-He could be convinced that he's protecting her and doing the right thing, and refuses to actually harm her outright...but has no such qualms about harming Dragon.
-This turns Jane against him for good.
-As if Jane needs more reasons to have a complex relationship with her grandpa's ghost, Sir D'ark's ghost would only remember the Breech family as traitors to the kingdom, leading him to absolutely *despise* Gunther just because of the sins of his ancestors, maybe even trying to harm him too.
-In the Discord, there was talk of D'ark manipulating Jester, and I like that idea. D'ark's ghost could somehow get in contact with Jester-probably because Jester sings the ballad about him, and after requesting that Jester play the ballad for him over and over again, strikes up conversation with him and begins subtly manipulating him by targeting his insecurities. Jester, who might even have hero-worship feelings towards the ghost of the heroic knight, is eager to prove himself to him, but quickly realizes that D'ark's desires would harm his friends. It would cause him a lot of pain.
-Jane swordfighting D'ark's ghost in a final showdown could represent her overcoming all the sexist obstacles in her life to become a knight, and also her loyalty to Dragon and her friends.
-Maybe D'ark would finally realize he was wrong, and that Jane is on her way to becoming a truly noble knight. After quiet contemplation, he is able to move on for good.
-Some miscellaneous thoughts: 1. After D'ark's defeat, Jane and Gunther could bond over having messed up ancestors, and also any adventures defeating D'ark put them through. 2.Also, I know D'ark's name is a reference to Joan of Arc, but it is literally a variant of the word dark. That's like classic kids show foreshadowing that someone is a bad guy. 3. It's canon that Jane eventually changes her last name to D'ark to honor his memory, and in an au where's a villain, I think she would want to improve the reputation of the family name and reclaim it for her own.
(maybe I'll talk about Adeline in this au sometime. I think this au would do crazy things for her character development since she canonically has a lot of baggage related to D'ark's death. Same with Sir Theodore.)

A Jane and the Dragon AU idea I had that I wanted to talk about because why not
Decades ago, Jane’s grandfather cheated on his wife and seduced a noblewoman behind her betrothed’s back. Because she was due to be married, and he had a busy traveling life as a knight, they left each other, but the noblewoman was pregnant with his child. She kept it, named him Magnus, and raised him alongside her husband, Mr.Breech (he believed the baby boy was his own). Several years later, Jane’s grandfather had a child with his wife, a baby girl named Adeline. He was killed in battle a year after she was born, taking the secret of his affair with him. But Lady Breech kept evidence of her lover, evidence that was kept hidden until decades after her own untimely demise. Once this is uncovered, it shakes the worlds of the Turnkey and Breech families. How and Adeline and Magnus supposed to cope with the knowledge that they are half-siblings? How is Adeline supposed to deal with the fact that the father she (and many others) idolized was actually a womanizer? How will Gunther feel about now knowing his blood grandfather was actually a celebrated war hero, and that being a traitor isn't as deeply ingrained in his blood as he thought? How will Jane come to terms with the fact that her longtime rival is actually her cousin? Where do they all go from here?

This is just me personally, but I feel like Sir Theodore and Adeline (Jane’s mom) have some kind of relationship, and that relationship would be really interesting to explore. Like, Sir Theodore was best friends with Adeline’s father (Jane’s grandfather) before he died in battle. Do you think he was like, around for Adeline’s childhood or something?
Also, he’s training Jane to be a knight, which is the same profession that got her grandfather killed. There’s got to be some unresolved emotions there.
