hello!! i would love to know — what books are u reading? have u read? would recommend? want to read? no need to answer all, but would love to know what’s on ur radar
dear anon! i cherish this question. currently i’m reading:
Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead by Olga Tokarczuk: strong contender for my favorite title of all time. like, whew. this is a genre-busting dark comedy/murder mystery by the Nobel Prize-winning author of Flights (also on my TBR), translated from the Polish. great so far.
The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow: portal fantasy about portals. loads of people adore this, and Harrow can really put a beautiful sentence together, but i think it’s just not a Me book. i’d still recommend for those who love whimsical fantasies and especially historical fantasy.
The Age of Surveillance Capitalism by Shoshana Zuboff: fascinating, enlightening, bleak as fuck. Zuboff tracks the history of data collection as we know it, and how the data market has sprung to life completely free of democratic oversight. she shows that the use of our data doesn’t just cause the destruction of privacy - the process ultimately begins to predetermine the pathways of our lives going forward. terrifying.
here are a dozen-odd favorites from the past year and a half:
I Am, I Am, I Am by Maggie O’Farrell: a memoir told in seventeen near-death experiences. an encounter with a murderer, an almost fatal childhood illness, an airplane engine failure ... you really start to feel the bizarre intimacy that O’Farrell has with death, and the way that that relationship remakes life into something more brittle and more remarkable. helps that O’Farrell is an exquisite prose stylist (she's a novelist by trade).
The Neapolitan Quartet by Elena Ferrante: an account of two young girls who grow up in an impoverished neighborhood of Naples. immersive doesn’t begin to cover it. read these women’s lives front to back, early childhood to late middle age, and feel like you’re turning through the entire texture of midcentury Italy. but the bedrock of it is the girls’ friendship, which at this point is probably destined to go down in history as one of the great literary friendships.
Outline by Rachel Cusk (and its sequels, Transit and Kudos): i still don’t know how this book gets away with it. how?! the conceit is that the first-person narrator is nearly invisible. most of what we see on the page is other people confessing to her, monologuing at her, having one-sided conversations with her. and yet - though she’s all but bulldozed by others’ forceful personalities - we feel her as a person in negative space. we perceive someone in pain with an extraordinary capacity to listen and observe.
A Very Large Expanse of Sea by Tahereh Mafi: reminded me why I love YA. hard-edged, alienated, foulmouthed Shirin is a 16-year-old Muslim girl, and it’s 2002, and she just wants to keep her head down to survive all the Islamophobic garbage around her - but her walls are threatened by a sweet possibility of romance and a burgeoning love for breakdancing. imo, a perfect coming-of-age story.
Trust Exercise by Susan Choi: “#MeToo book” plus “unreliable narrator” sort of sounds like a recipe for disaster, but this book slaps. it's about a cohort of prematurely mature arts-school teenagers in the orbit of a charismatic drama teacher. at least, it begins that way. with a serious structural twist - about halfway through, i whispered “what?!” into the pages of the book, then didn’t put it down until i’d finished - it becomes an uneasy, ever-shifting interrogation of whose trauma gets told and whose gets internalized, who gets judged and who gets absolved, who gets closure and who gets nothing. (i’m being intentionally vague because of the twists, but i’ll say outright that the book has no interest in abuse apologia and the unreliable narration isn’t about that.)
Normal People and Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney: i group them together because they have the same texture in my mind. the writing is emotionally claustrophobic yet hilarious. the characters are ironic and self-aware yet trapped in painful holding patterns. so much has been written about Rooney at this point - i’ll just say i think she deserves every ounce of her success.
soon on my TBR:
The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton: my favorite sub-sub-subgenre roars back to life with this Groundhog Day plus murder mystery book! i’m excited.
Autumn by Ali Smith: the first in a quartet named for each season. lots of claims out there that smith is one of the best novelists working today. seems more experimental than i’m really used to, but we’ll see.
The Rise of Kyoshi by F.C. Yee: why have i not read this book yet? it’s just been sitting there on my shelf for a year. i’m a clown and i need this in my veins immediately.
Kindred by Octavia Butler: a time-travel narrative about a modern Black woman drawn repeatedly, unwillingly into the antebellum South. this will actually be my first book by Butler! i doubt it will be the last, though!
Beowulf: a New Translation by Maria Dahvana Headley: this was brought to my attention because it translates the opening interjection of the epic poem, Hwæt!, usually translated along the lines of “Hear ye!” or “Hark!” as “Bro!” i can’t wait.

and since we’re on it, here’s my ebates affiliate code! most of the returns are tiny but they can add up--especially around christmas, when the rates are better. as always I suggest using it every time you can but don’t ever buy things because of it, if that makes sense! people can get addicted to this shit!!
I get a pretty good kickback if you sign up via me, and I think the deal is right now if you spend $25* after signing up via me, I get that bonus and you also get some kinda gift card.
*it’s just an affiliate system, if you are planning to buy something affiliated with ebates, ie sephora, click through to that store via the ebates website or you can get a browser add on, and then you get like some changing rate of cashback which is essentially a portion of their affiliate link money, it’s less of a scam than it sounds. the rates are low usually, like 1-2%, but they fluctuate and do lots of specials, and weird niche stuff has higher rates. so like for Christmas I used it when the rates were like nearly 10% at sephora and I had $75 worth of christmas shopping to do, yknow. but you only get your cash quarterly (so you can’t scam them with returns), jsyk, it’s not quick cash.

SO I know I cheated a bit and went on a rant and no November will not be full of rants however I did want to announce that the month of November will be skin care
YAYYY!! As you can clearly tell I am a huge fan of skin care and have been for a while mostly because of my eczema but yeah
Today I just wanted to show you guys some stuff I’ve bought for myself as I am depressed(not truly but truly) about school and life
So first off starting from the left is the Cremo Coconut Mango Moisturizing Shave Cream and Cremo Lavender Bliss Moisturizing Shaving Cream. It retails at 8 dollars for 6 fl oz which is a steal. Let me just say this is BOMB! I usually struggle with finding shaving cream that works for my dry skin but this does the trick and it smells so good! It does not suds up it more of a creamy texture so it is more moisturizing. I have had no problems using it and I love it. (Thank you Cremo for sending these over!)
The second one is the Lush D’fluff strawberry shaving soap. I also really love this shaving soap its 12.95  for 2.4 oz so it’s a little more pricey but still worth it. It’s moisturizing and you don’t need a ton to shave. It does smell like strawberries! The only thing I wish is the bottle to be a bit bigger but that is lush so if you want more natural you gots to pay the monies.
The one right under Lush is the Soap and Glory righteous butter. I am a sucker for anything that is Soap and Glory and this does the trick. The smell is amazing and the cream is a bit thicker then your average cream so you really do feel your skin moisturizing. You get 10.1 oz for about 16 bucks Soap & Glory The Righteous Butter 300Ml. If you don’t want to dedicate yourself to this but still want to try it they also have a travel size Soap & Glory The Righteous Butter – Travel Size.
Next up is the Julep Bare Face Hydrating Cleansing Oil and Makeup Remover. I can’t say enough about this product super moisturizing so if you have extra dry skin like me this is for you ! Makeup wipes usually dry up my skin so this is a great alternative. I know it’s a bit pricier but it’s so worth is and you get 3.5 oz for 28 zollas. You only need about three pumps and your good to go. It melts the makeup right off so good! I’ve had it for 5 months now and usually use it twice a week and its like half way so the product last.
Last but not least is The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% Solution 15ml and The Ordinary 100% Plant-derived Squalane 30ml. I cry(honestly) too good the salicylic acid has gotten rid of my little stubborn pimple that do not want to leave and the plant derived squalane is super moisturizing. I use only both at night because the plant derived squalane is extremely hydrating and it counters some of the dryness from the salicylic acid. I usually spot treat for the salicylic acid and you do not need a whole ton so it last.
Well guys that is all I hope you guys enjoyed! Make sure to treat yo’ self and have a great day!

IN THE MORNING: FOR NOVEMBER AND BEYOND SO I know I cheated a bit and went on a rant and no November will not be full of rants however I did want to announce that the month of November will be skin care…

hey. Please link the pillow? 😢
i am going to use an amazon affiliate link but if you would rather look it up elsewhere, i support you. if you can find it cheaper literally anywhere, get that one. if you can find a bootleg please tell me because i looked for months before giving in and buying this fucking pillow. if you think you can get away with making your own out of foam, go for it. if your work gives you an HSA/FSA you can buy it with that, but you cannot get health insurance to reimburse you for it (i checked). i had to buy this fucking pillow with a goddamn payment plan. a pillow payment plan. nothing will make you question your life choices like needing a payment plan for a fucking pillow.
anyway it's called the medcline.
Tumblr media
i have horrible acid reflux but ended up basically never using my bed wedge when i finally got one because trying to side sleep on a cheapo wedge is a nightmare. on multiple occasions i have slept so wrong i couldn't turn my neck for days. one time i fucked up my shoulder so bad i couldn't sleep on that side for a week. i have no idea how i pulled that off but clearly i have invented some advanced sleep failure techniques. as near as i can tell my sleeping body defaults to the family guy death pose, which is not ergonomic. so i bought the goddamn armhole pillow and figured if it didn't work i'd return it.
my side of the bed is a fortress now. when i pull the duvet up it looks like ferris bueller is trying to convince someone he's sick. the big curling body pillow looks like i killed clippy to sleep inside his corpse. when i am getting ready for bed it looks like i'm plugging myself into some kind of pod. it's so fucking dumb. i am sleeping great and no longer falling asleep to the taste of bile and waking up with a fucked up neck. my hips don't hurt. i can't return it. i can't go back to the before times. i'm so mad about it.

just gonna make a fucking. megapost of affiliate and referral links for anyone who wants to support me and also get deals or whatever. i'm gonna try to be pretty clear about what i get for things also.
you get a thing, i get a thing:
Everand, formerly Scribd: read 'unlimited' (ish) books, use my link to get two free months and I also get a free month.
Mubi: it's not movies, it's cinema (it's movies). Use my link and we both get a free month.
Reel Paper: it's bamboo toilet paper with no plastic packaging and so far it's been the only one I like. It's a subscription and also spendy compared to regular toilet paper but I'm spoiled now. Use my link and we both get $15 off.
MeUndies: it's the fucking podcast underwear. I know. I know. They had a Halloween collection and I'm weak. It's so comfy I'm mad about it. Use my link and you get 20% off your first order, I get a $20 credit, enough to buy One Whole Underwear.
Unique Vintage: it's clothes, I like the collabs and am still mad about missing out on the Pusheen skirt. Don't buy anything full price imho, quality can vary WILDLY. My link will get you $10 off a $75 order and I get a $10 credit. Not the best deal but whatever.
YNAB: I was spending too much money on podcast underwear so I signed up for You Need A Budget to trick me into thinking money is real. So far it is the first thing to have ever successfully tricked me into treating money as real, and my debt situation has improved exponentially. It's $15 a month or $99 a year and my link gets you a free month, if you sign up after the trial I also get a free month.
ProtonMail: privacy-focused alternative to gmail, switching is easy peasy and it's free. Use my link to get a free month of the fancy paid version, and if you decide to sign up I get $10 off my renewal (because I pay for the fancy version).
i get straight cash:
Humble Bundle and the Humble Store: use my link to buy some video games or book bundles and I get a cut. Signing up for Humble Choice after clicking my link also gets me paid. This is literally the only referral program that pays me worth a damn.
the amazon quarantine:
amazon sucks and doesn't pay for shit except 'bounties' so ignoring all of this is fine actually. i get pennies for most things. it's bad.
Here's the fucking. 'influencer page' that Amazon gave me. I don't really know how it works. Anyway the rest of this is bounties.
You can use SNAP EBT on Amazon, apparently if you register a card using my link I get five bucks.
Audible Plus, if you use my link and sign up for a free trial I get $5 and if you actually pay I get another $10.
Audible Premium Plus is the same deal.
Amazon Prime Video, I get $3 if you sign up for a free trial.
Audible Gift Subscription, buy one for someone and I get either $8 or $10 depending on whether it's 12 months or not.
non-referral gifts:
maybe you would rather just send me a dollar or some cookies or whatever so i'll put all that here
I've got tipping enabled on this post lmao
Here's my ko-fi
Here's my Amazon wishlist, I have the occasional expensive thing on there because I also use it for things I plan to buy myself eventually
Here's my Throne, I have surprise gifts enabled so in theory you can send me random weird shit as a prank if that's something that appeals to you

waiting patiently for the info post/referral link about ynab because uh, the credit card situation is a skotch uncomfortable, you can tell i've been doing "just a lil' treat for morale" since 2016.
i had to wait until my free trial was over to get a referral link (no infinite free trial for me, alas)
here's my You Need A Budget referral link! you get a free month, i get a free month. if you decide you like it the cheapest option is the $99 annual plan but if you don't have a hundred bucks to spend on on a website that tells you to spend less fucking money they also have $15 a month. i guess ideally if the $15 a month plan digs you out of your hole well enough you can save up for the annual. it also comes with a family plan built-in, so in theory you can split the cost between six people if you all need some fucking help. in my case i'm sharing my household budget with my spouse, but i'm also sharing the plan with my mom and my sister who both have their own budgets that they don't share with me. i come from a long proud line of women juggling which utility is about to be shut off.
NOTE: if you are straight-up not making enough fucking money, ynab won't do shit. this is only helpful if you should be making enough money but money is cursed and you can't stop spending it because money is fake. no amount of budgeting the amount you spend on hot drinks will dig you out of poverty and anyone who says otherwise is full of shit. spam your resume to higher paying jobs and hope you get lucky enough to need ynab someday.
YNAB EXPLANATION: it's very similar to envelope-based budgeting, which is the kind where you set cash aside in labeled envelopes and whenever you need to spend money on different things it comes out of the envelopes. except it's 2024 and i don't use fucking cash. so with ynab i assign money into categories and then when it's time to spend money i check the app and see how much money i have in my energy drinks and vapes budget.
except i spent my first month frantically rearranging money into different categories to try and cover what i'd already spent despite not having the money for it, and also it took forever to figure out how it handles credit cards.
anyway. i'm not there yet. i'm working on it. i'm still riding the float on my credit cards and i need to stop doing that because it's bad actually. i recommend watching youtube tutorials about ynab because it can be really confusing at first and that makes it easy to give up. but even though i'm not there yet, i'm already doing better than i was a month ago and progress is progress.

since multiple people asked about the cube, it's actually a Solight MegaPuff and you can get it on their website or more expensively through amazon using my affiliate link. amazon pays pennies so don't feel obligated to do that. i keep it folded up on the windowsill to charge and when the power's out it works great to have light, although we haven't yet had an outage significant enough for me to need to charge my phone with it. anyway now join me in lusting after a completely different product, the Solight QWNN which looks like half a star so i'd need to buy two of the goddamn things to get the aesthetic i really want and i'd need to fold them up during the day to charge them which i can already tell would be A Whole Thing but goddamn if i don't want it anyway.
