Did you know there’s an #africanburialground right in #manhattan? More than 15,000 people were buried here on what were the outskirts of the city back then. When the government was ready to build a new federal building on the land they discovered 417 bodies. This was a huge controversy and ultimately the government dedicated the small section of the land and build this memorial monument. It’s a very touching, sacred space. It honors many of the Africans and native Americans who were originally interred here. Stop by and pay homage. #newyork #nyc (at African Burial Ground National Monument) https://www.instagram.com/p/CPYRGzNrTS1/?utm_medium=tumblr

Canadian history: #Repost @rj_cham ・・・ NEGROES CEMETERY IN MONTREAL Louis XIV allowed the importation of slaves into New France (present-day Quebec) in 1689 and as early as 1702, Bishop Saint-Vallier declared slavery to be a hereditary state. Intendant Raudot formalized slavery in 1709 declaring that the owner of an enslaved Indigenous or African remains one if he was acquired legally. Enslaved Indigenous were more accessible and therefore cost less; on the other hand, Black labor was in demand for land clearing. Paradoxically, they are mostly in urban areas where they are servants and workers. Under the French regime, enslaved blacks were taken from war against the English or came from smuggling from the English colonies. A master could free his slave, but only in front of a notary. As for the Cimetière des Nègres (Negroes Cemetery), it was a piece of land located at the corner of St Jacques and St Pierre streets, where the Mechanic's Institute was located, active since the 1700s, officially running from 1800 to 1820 for the #CityofMontreal. Also known as ''Cimetière des Pauvres'' (Poors' Cemetery) where poor whites were also buried, or Cimetière de la Poudrière (Gunpowder Cemetery), it was located next to a gunpowder shop. In 1855, the Mechanics ’Institute opened its own building, at the corner of Great St. James and St. Peter streets (now St. Jacques and St. Pierre, in Old Montreal). In 1907 the Royal Bank of Canada moved its head office to Montreal and between 1920 and 1926, bought the property and demolished everything including the Mechanics' Institute to make space for a new 22-storey building — the value of the land had increased and was now in the center of what became the city’s financial and banking district — and erased some major local black history. The countless nameless, ageless and purposely omitted Africans and Indigenous souls buried there are also part of this extended history that we share as people of African descent in the Americas, and once more we forget to mention the Unknown in our quest for humanity. 📸 @bamjamin #AfricanBurialGround #afrodescendant #touristinmyowncity 🖤🤎💛🤍❤️ #antiracism #Beautygeeks https://www.instagram.com/p/CBEDgbxBdoi/?igshid=yfznewaponrz

#tombstonetuesday Today's feature isn't a tombstone but rather a burial ground. African Burial Ground National Monument in #NewYorkCity contains the remains of 419 human remains unearthed in the early 1990s during the construction of the Ted Weiss Federal Building at 290 Broadway. The remains were rediscovered in a portion of what was the largest colonial-era cemetery for people of African descent. It is estimated that there may have been 15,000 burials in what was called the "Negroes Burial Ground" in the 1700s and it covered five to six acres. The City of New York closed the burial ground in the 1790s and divided the land into lots for sale. The cemetery was eventually forgotten until construction of the federal building started. Congress acted to stop construction and allow time for the building to be altered to provide space for a memorial and visitor center. The site was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1993 and a National Monument in 2006. Several pieces of public art were also commissioned for the site. A visitor center opened in 2010 to provide interpretation of the site and African-American history in New York. All of the remains were placed in mahogany coffins from Ghana and reinterred at the site after examination and analysis. Seven earthen mounds mark the site where the remains were buried. Due to construction on the building, it was almost impossible to get a decent photo of the memorial. #nyhistory #SpreadTheHistory #cemetery #cemetery_shots #aj_graveyards #rememberme #grave #graveyard #graveyard_dead #blog #blogger #travelblog #travelblogger #memorial #mementomori #historygirl #history #taphophile #taphophiles_only #iloveny #FindYourPark #nps #nps101 #nationalparks #nationalparkservice #goparks #nationalparkgeek #africanburialground @nps_nyharbor (at African Burial Ground National Monument)

Dec 26, 2020 | Kwanzaa Celebration at the African Burial Grounds, New York NY
Performing over holy ground is more like ancestor reverance. Dwa for the existence of this institution that we may gather to honor those whom have come before us, Remember how they got through hell to retur to us, and celebrate each other as a living Afrikan community, w/ global countries of birth.
I perform spoken word bareoot.
Yes, I painted my own face.
Everybody thought I was a dancer. Lol
Pay attn to the floor art. Its called a cosmogram "New Ring Shot" designed by Houston Conwill, architect Joseph DePace, and the poet Estella Conwill Mojozo. There's a matching piece located at The Schomburg in Harlem, NY.
Give Thanks! To the African Burial Grounds having me for a 5th year. I'll see you again soon.
Support the institutions that represent us.

Spent some time on sacred ground right in the heart of lower #manhattan. The #africanburialground has existed for ages. As the financial district grew many of the graves were lost. This memorial represents the bodies found in 1991 while they were digging to construct the Federal Building. The epicenter of capitalism is literally built on top of slaves. How American. #nyc #newyork #history #travel #instagood #instacool (at African Burial Ground National Monument)
