How poaching and the legal mammal trade impacts African wildlife
By Rashmi Shivni
Africa, one of few areas on Earth with nearly intact wildlife populations, faces serious threats from  both legal and illegal mammal trade. Hundreds of species have landed on the the endangered species list in the last two decades, and African nations are moving to restore population numbers. Here’s how we got here.
Tumblr media
South Africa’s Kruger National Park, a favorite target for poachers, has about 17,000 elephants total. South African officials reported 451 poached elephants between 1980 and 2017, according to data from the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). Poachers killed 68 elephants in South Africa last year. Of those, 67 dwelled at Kruger National Park.
Based on a 1969 survey, African elephants numbered as many as 1.3 million across the continent. Today, 415,000 of those elephants remain. Some experts debate those figures. But if the numbers are accurate then these surveys put poaching at the at the forefront of conservation action.
Tumblr media
South Africa is home to the largest rhino population. According to CITES data, poachers didn’t target rhinos as much in South Africa or other southern nations until 2008, when demand for rhino horn and elephant ivory surged in Asian markets. In 2014, poachers slaughtered 1,214 rhinos, and by 2015, they illegally killed 1,175 rhinos. Since then, poaching incidents steadily decreased.
Poaching prevention systems, such as Kruger National Park’s intensive protection zones (IPZ), played a major role in bringing down poaching incidents. The park houses more than 8,000 rhinos with about 5,000 living in its IPZs, where security gates and scanner cameras prevent poachers from entering the grounds.
And what about legal animal trade?
Poaching and illegal trafficking continue to grow in many African nations. According to studies conducted by the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF), African animals are most often exported to nations such as the United States, Russian and China. These wild animals are primarily used in research and  transported to zoos. More often though, animals are purchased for commercial use, such as for entertainment, as pets or for clothing. So for three-quarters of African nations, there is an economic incentive to selling in this market. However, many of these species are endangered.
Tumblr media
The legal animal trade in Africa influences multiple industries, ranging from conservation purposes to research, hunting trophies to zoos. The AWF reports that the medical and science sector makes up about 75 percent of the legal animal trade, and the sole import is the Crab-eating Macaque--an invasive monkey species in Africa. However, mainstream culture can predict which animals will get poached.  From 2001 to 2015, 15,745 live mammals went toward commercial areas such as the pet market. The Saharan Fennec Fox ranked second in imports in 2016 after the movie “Zootopia” released. Though this species isn’t endangered, some conservation organizations worry about these surges in commercial sales going unchecked. And if that happens, vulnerable species face greater risks of endangerment.
Balancing the market with conservation
In the last three decades, African governments joined forces with local communities and conservation groups, such as the AWF, Honeyguide and the International Union for Conservation of Nature, to protect Africa’s most threatened species. In some areas, poaching and illegal trade dropped due to monitoring programs like IPZ. Data-driven surveys help these conservation groups and governments balance both animal populations and growing economies in modern Africa.

TikTok and KTB join forces to bring wildebeest migration live
Tumblr media
TikTok has announced partnership with the Kenya Tourism Board, the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), and Conservation International to bring live the Great Wildebeest Migration to its more than 1 billion monthly active users.
The collaboration will see the four organizations bring live the Great Migration from the Masai Mara National Park in Kenya as well as educational videos about the event and Maasai community.
TikTok says the live event will be available to the community on TikTok Africa page from 25 and 29 August, from 6:30 to 8:00 and 10:30 to 14:00 daily Nairobi time.
“We are delighted to partner with Kenya Tourism Board, IFAW, and Conservation International to bring the Great Migration and the topic of wildlife conservation to our global community.
Through TikTok’s LIVE feature, we hope to bring this global phenomenon closer to everyone around the world, connecting people with a shared passion for wildlife, nature and conservation,” said Boniswa Sidwaba, TikTok’s Content Operations Manager for Africa.
Content throughout the LIVE will be curated by award-winning wildlife photographer Jeffrey Wu, and experts from renowned local organizations including African Wildlife Foundation, Maasai Mara National Reserve and African Wildlife Foundation will join the sessions to educate those tuning in on the Maasai Mara ecosystem, the impact and importance of tourism on preserving the environment, and the impact of the pandemic, among others.
KTB Chief Executive Officer Dr. Betty Radier said the collaboration is key in raising destination Kenya brand visibility around the globe.
“We are always looking for strategic collaborations to position the country as a preferred tourist destination and this partnership is a great milestone.
Kenya is a rich and diverse country, with an incredible wildlife offering which we want to highlight as well as protect.
Together with TikTok we can engage the world with content and experiences from any part of the country and drive more awareness of our country and wildlife, especially during this time when travel is limited with the aim of curbing the spread of the virus.
Kenya Tourism Board is keen to ensure MagicalKenya remains top of mind among consumers and the TikTok platform is making this possible,” said Dr. Radier.

#orangefruitcakeanimalalphabet This week we reach J is For Jackal. . . This original A6 illustration is available as a #fiverfridaydeal and comes with a little handwritten note of info about Jackals. . . Is it just me, or does anyone else think they look like a cross between a Fox and a Deer? . . A modern challenge faced by the Jackal is ' the human problem' There's been an increase in habitat loss. More roads. More houses. Industrialisation. Unsustainable agriculture. No wonder they are close to human settlements. So 'naturally' they are killed as pests to protect homes and livestock, and feared as rabies transmitters. . . Today's research came from the African Wildlife Foundation Website. There's lots of interesting stuff to read on there if you are interested in learning more about Jackals or other Wildlife Conservation. . . . If you would like to purchase this lil chap send me a message. If he doesn't sell tonight I'll be adding him to my Folksy Shop over the weekend, so you can always check there as well. . . . #animalalphabet #animal_sketchbook #animalillustration #jackal #wildlifeconservation #conservstion #africanwildlifefoundation #animallivesmatter #animallover #fiverfriday #inkillustration #veganart #animallove #friyay #fridaydeals #sustainableartist #sustainableart https://www.instagram.com/p/CDCYJDElAyn/?igshid=kpe7k5p1m211

Never forget Elephants need your actions to protect them from extinction. You can make a difference. In 1989, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) banned the international trade in ivory. However, there are still thriving, unregulated domestic ivory markets in a number of countries, which fuel an illegal international trade. Poaching to meet growing demand from affluent Asian countries is driving up the rate of poaching. In some countries, political unrest contributes to elephant poaching. Help END poaching today by not buying products of threatened species. 'Savanna Morning' Acrylic on Wood Panel..... Enjoy safari at home with Clint's painting. This lion couple resting on the African plain facing the morning sunrise in their faces. The reflections of light cathing the stone, sand, pebbles and tree trunks in the distance. The perspective, depth and focus of the surroundings gives this piece a calming effect, yet shows off the vibrant tones on the animals fur. . . . . . . #ClintEagarDesign #natgeowild #natgeo #lions #wildcat #savannahcats #savannhcatsofinstagram #lionsofinstagram #bigcats #africanlion #africanimals #wildlifesafari #wildlifetour #maasaimara #africanwildlife #serengeti #nature #natgeosafari #africanwildlifefoundation #singita #singitagram #BBCearth #bbcearthlife #africageo #natgeoimagecollection #krugernationapark #sabisands #krugerpark #krugerexplorer #wildlifesafari (at Clint Eagar Design) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0ZdY3Cg0bj/?igshid=49ya19hpu7uc

It has been almost one year since we were last here and there is nowhere that feels more like home than with these incredible beings and their caretakers who call them family. So I wasn't joking when I said I'll send this oke to the highest bidder. Current highest bid is a single beer. Very difficult to divide that up 60/40. Nonetheless, as of now, @cavenastics is getting it. 60% is going to the @africanwildlifefoundation to aid in the fight against poaching and idiocy that is trophy hunting. I'll need roughly $450 to get to Sri Lanka so I'll cap out there if this really takes off. Bidding ends this Sunday. 🦏🐘🐆🦍 #awf #africanwildlifefoundation #getpaddytosrilankafoundation #strugglingartist #rhino #rhinobru #blackrhino #BigUnit #rhinos #rhinoceros #rhinocerosrex #savetherhinos #conservation #fundraising #nature #animal #animals #ChristmasBonus? #illustration #rhinohorn #natureconservation #rhinoafrica #rhinorugby #rhinocoffee #illustration #illustrate #illustrator #tht #throwbackthursday #soon (at Natural History Museum, London)
