Reuters’ Ethics and Standards editor told HonestReporting on Tuesday that the wire service “disputes” our “claim” that its journalists had “decorate[d] their office with terror symbols.”
This despite photo evidence we exposed last week showing scarves with terror groups insignias decorating what used to be Reuters office in Gaza in 2013:
Tumblr media
The man in the photo is Reuters current Head of Visuals for Gaza, Suhaib Jadallah Salem. The photo still appears on his Facebook page.
Like the Nazi Swastika, the emblems on the scarves are of genocidal groups — Hamas, Islamic Jihad, al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades — that call for the killing of Jews/Israelis (like some of Suhaib’s colleagues in Reuters).
There are only two bad explanations to Reuters’ disturbing response: ” Either it doesn’t view these proscribed terror groups as such, or it is denying indisputable evidence.
The rest of Reuters Ethics and Standards editor Brian Moss’s official response did not address our exposure of its journalists in Gaza receiving awards from senior Hamas officials.
Instead, it said: “On the basis of a close review by the Reuters Ethics and Standards department, we dispute the distorted evidence and insinuations of bias in the HonestReporting September 5th article. We stand by our coverage of Gaza and our team, who operate within the Thomson Reuters Trust Principles…Further, we dispute any claim that our journalists received ‘de-facto bribes from terrorists.'”
But here are the facts, which HonestReporting stands behind:
Our review of Palestinian media revealed that since 2015, the proscribed terror group has hosted annual ceremonies to honor Gazan journalists who had won prestigious international awards, including photographers from Reuters.
This cozy relationship between Gaza’s terror groups and the journalists tasked with covering them objectively is ethically flawed. It exposes the disturbing entanglement between terrorists and the media, shaping a distorted global narrative about Gaza.
Honored by Terrorists
In 2017, Hamas held a commendation event for international award-winning journalists in Gaza, where it honored Reuters photographer Suhaib Jadallah Salem — the agency’s current head of visuals for Gaza (who was photographed in Reuters office in front of the terror groups’ scarves.)
One of the photos from the event shows Suhaib’s brother Mohammed Jadallah Salem, a Reuters photographer who recently won the Pulitzer prize and the World Press Photo award, receiving Suhaib’s commendation plaque on his behalf. Two senior Hamas officials are granting the plaque: Khalil al-Hayya and Mushir al-Masri:
Tumblr media
Al-Hayya has publicly called for a fight against Israel as “the head of the serpent,” and al-Masri has vowed to “uproot The Zionists With Our Axes, Knives, Guns.”
Receiving commendation from such terrorists is a mark of Cain. It should get any journalist disciplined by any respectable media outlet.
Yet Reuters journalists — knowing perhaps that their bosses won’t find out or even care — had no qualms getting into bed with Hamas. Another photo from the event shows other Reuters journalists around a table not too far from al-Hayya: Reuters Senior Gaza correspondent Nidal al-Mughrabi is sitting near Suhaib’s brother Mohammed and photographer Ashraf Amra (who was also honored at the event and exposed by HonestReporting for endorsing infiltration into Israel on October 7). Beside them is Belal Jadallah, who headed the allegedly “independent” Gaza Press House:
Tumblr media
Suhaib himself attended a separate Hamas commendation event for journalists later in 2017. This time, he was honored for performing the Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca:
Tumblr media
Suhaib received the commendation from al-Masri and Hamas spokesperson Fawzi Barhoum (who have often been interviewed by Reuters), along with the movement’s media officials.
It’s worth noting that four of the Jadallah brothers work for Reuters, in Gaza and Dubai. And the links of the Jadallah family to Hamas go back years. One of the brothers of Suhaib and Mohammed, Sallah, was among the terrorists who kidnapped and killed Israeli soldier Nahshon Waxman in 1994.
The mastermind behind that operation was Moahmmed Deif, who was recently eliminated by Israel. As Hamas’ military chief, Deif was also one of the masterminds behind the October 7 massacre in southern Israel.
If Suhaib and Mohammed were professional journalists, such background wouldn’t necessarily matter. But if they have been hosted and honored by Hamas, it’s alarming.
Unethical Nexus
Top news editors probably know it’s impossible to be a journalist in Gaza without links to Hamas, which controls the information flow. In other words, professional journalism in Gaza is impossible, and news outlets should admit it to their audience.
But being hosted by Hamas, receiving its commendations, and displaying terror groups’ insignias isn’t a case of journalists even trying to be professional. This is an agenda-driven, cooperative, symbiotic, reciprocal, and personal nexus that benefits each side.
A Hamas statement from one of the commendation events said it best:
The media office of Hamas organizes this annual event to honor creative journalists for the fourth year in a row, in appreciation of their efforts in serving the Palestinian cause.
Journalists who violate the agency’s code of ethics by receiving de-facto bribes (or at least benefits) from terrorists to “serve the Palestinian cause,” and decorate their office with terror symbols, are not deserving of international praise or the defense of the Reuters Ethics and Standards department.

Roman Emperor Caligula's 2,000-Year-Old Garden Unearthed Near the Vatican
The gardens overlooking the Tiber river in Italy once belonged to an infamous Roman emperor.
Construction workers in Italy have discovered a 2,000-year-old garden that once belonged to a Roman emperor.
The travertine walls of the garden overlook the banks of the Tiber, a river that cuts through Rome and sits east of Vatican City. The ruins were unearthed as workers constructed a new overpass at Piazza Pia, according to a translated statement from the Italian Ministry of Culture.
Tumblr media
As archaeologists removed debris, they found a lead water pipe with the following inscription: "C(ai) Cæsaris Aug(usti) Germanici." Researchers determined that the engraving referred to Gaius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, better known as Caligula (aka "little boot," a childhood nickname given to him by his father's soldiers).
Based on the inscription, researchers think the garden likely belonged to the infamous Roman emperor. Not only was Caligula known for being a tyrannical and ruthless leader, he was also a sadist who humiliated his senate. Caligula assumed the throne in A.D. 37, and in A.D. 41 the Praetorian Guard — the officials who were supposed to protect him — assassinated the emperor.
This conclusion is supported by a passage in the ancient text "On the Embassy to Gaius," penned by Egyptian philosopher Philo of Alexandria. It describes how Caligula had met with a representative of Jews living in Alexandria, Egypt, at a large garden along the Tiber, according to the statement.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
At that time, Jewish Alexandrians and the Greek-Alexandrian population were in a "crisis that had manifested itself with violence, brawls and episodes of religious intolerance." However, Caligula rejected the Jews' requests for religious autonomy, instead siding with the Greeks.
Alessio De Cristofaro, an archaeologist at the Special Superintendency for Archaeology, Fine Art and Landscape, a government agency in Rome, said the find is significant because Piazza Pia is in the same area as the "Horti Agrippinae," the garden of Agrippina the Elder, who was Caligula's mother.
The pipe is also similar to another one, found in the early 1900s, that's inscribed with the name Iulia (Julia) Augusta, the second wife of Augustus and the grandmother of Germanicus. Researchers speculate that the property was inherited by Germanicus and later passed down to his wife, Agrippina the Elder, before going to Caligula.
In addition to the pipe, archaeologists found slabs of Roman-era pottery and terra-cotta figures of mythological scenes that would have decorated rooftops.

look......... it's Knives..... I can't explain you just gotta trust me here
(auto-generated translation into English just doesnt convey anywhere near the correct tone. this is one of those poems where you really need to hear it read and feel the violent apathy spitting from it. but anyway AHH. it's knives)
some analysis under the cut:
It's written in the French alexandrine (12 syllables, usually split into 2 equal hemistiches of 6, with alternating 'masculine' and 'feminine' rhyming couplets). I can't quite explain the masculine Vs feminine rhyme thing to non french speakers, but it's the -ette / -ade / -iennent (t not pronounced) endings which contrast with the -vieux / -pu / -beau etc etc masculine rhymes. It just gives the poem a really gorgeous flow and structure and I'm sad that it's basically impossible to fully replicate in translation - if you want to feel the original, then maybe listen to a recording of it while looking at the English translation
the 'bed which transforms into a tombstone' is just such an incredible line I love it so so much. In the original, 'fleurdelisé' means 'decorated with the fleur-de-lis' (⚜️) which was the symbol for the french royal family. I just love the imagery around royalty and a place of rest being twisted into a grave. None of the riches of the world can save this king who cannot find joy or beauty (or any emotion, really) in the world, not even in bloodshed
ALSO the line 'ce cruel malade' (= this cruel sick [man]) is so so so interesting. In french you can use adjectives as nouns so 'malade' means sick/unwell, but also can mean a sick person. But here it reduces the entire person to their sickness, which is super fascinating because it suggests there's no possible recovery and it's something fundamental to who & what they are. AND THEN there's this 'cruel' added in front of 'malade' - normally in french the adjective goes after the noun, and putting it before (i.e. ce CRUEL malade) really emphasizes the adjective. And ahhh the image of this tyrannical sickness is so cool because we usually see sick ppl as helpless / victim to circumstance, and so someone being defined by their sickness AND cruelty is both unusual and emphasising their agency AND ALSO their lack of agency in their situation. It's SO fitting for knives because he is 'malade' in the sense that his trauma has defined and shaped everything about him, and he didn't really have any control over this 'illness'. BUT he responds to it with this cruelty and apathy that leaves him isolated from the world that he rules over and subjugates.
and also not to overthink things but 'les dames d'atour pour qui tout prince est beau' - there is NO real loyalty towards him from his inner circle. Every prince is beautiful for them, and so every prince is interchangeable. They are with him because he is a prince, and they don't actually value him beyond his royal title. The GHGs work for Knives because he's the most powerful guy, not because they actually are loyal to him or care much for his cause, with the exception of legato doing his grotesque song and dance trying to please Knives but never actually gets the approval and thanks from Knives that he craves
reading Conrad as the wiseman who can create gold (presumably via transmutation i.e. alchemy i.e. impossible) but still cannot cure the rot within Knives (l'élément corrompu)

HISTORY TOPICS TO RESEARCH:
[LIST] The Sumerians, Reading Recs.・located in the historical region of southern Mesopotamia, emerging during the Chalcolithic and early Bronze Ages between the sixth and fifth millennium BC were the Sumerians - the oldest recorded civilzation in the entire world....also they invented writing, literature, and beer, so you know they were fun.

The Great Molasses Flood of 1917・if an inescapable tsunami wave of molasses charging 35 miles per hour toward you seems impossible...you should have been there to see it in Boston in 1919.
The Mouse Utopia Experiments・if you ever wondered what the horrifying real story that inspired The Rats of NIMH was...well you've found it here.
Subtropolis・SubTropolis is a business complex located 150 feet underground in an artificial cave in the bluffs north of the Missouri River in Kansas City, Missouri made out of an old mine that was, at one time, supposed to be an amusement park.

The Bloody Bender Murders・in the 1870s the Bender family opened an Inn in Labette County in Kansas and began murdering people who came to visit.
ART HISTORY TOPICS TO RESEARCH:
The "Le génie du mal" and the "L’ange du mal"・the St. Paul Cathédrale de Liège in Belgium, once upon a time, hired two artists both to make statues of the Devil to place in their church and, unfortunately for the nuns of St. Paul Cathédrale de Liège they were done just a little too well.
Albert Kahn's Archive of The Planet・It was Kahn's dream to document the entire world via photography, from 1909 and 1931 his team dispatched to accomplish this goal. However, when the great depression hit his dreams were smashed.
HISTORICAL FIGURES TO RESEARCH:
Carvaggio・Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, known mononymously as Caravaggio, was an Italian painter active in Rome, disliked by many during his time for his arrogance, his rebellious nature...oh yeah, and he was a murderer.
Violet Jessop・Violet Constance Jessop was an Irish-Argentine ocean liner stewardess and nurse in the early 20th century who managed to survive THREE shipwrecks in her time, including the titanic!
Kate Warne・Kate Warne was none other than the first female detective in the United States, who worked for the Pinkerton National Detective Agency - the same agency that inspired many of the original Sherlock novels.
Hatshepsut・Hatshepsut was the Great Royal Wife of Pharaoh Thutmose II and, after his passing, was made the first ever Queen of Egypt...so why has no one ever heard of her?
Ching Shih・Zheng Yi Sao, also known as Shi Xianggu, Shek Yeung and Ching Shih, was the leader of the largest recorded pirate fleat to ever exist from 1801 to 1810 in China...also the pirate queen in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies was based on her...not really important but I think that's pretty cool.
Marie Vigoreaux・Marie Vigoreaux, was a French fortune teller and an active part of the famous Poison Affair of the 1670s.
Olga of Kiev・Olga was a regent of Kievan Rus' for her son Sviatoslav from 945 until 957 who is famously known for taking revenge on entire city by mass murdering them and then, after the deed was done, converted to Catholicism and becoming a patreon saint afterward...and, yes, she is still honored as a saint in Ukraine to this day
Wu Zetian・Wu Zetian, personal name Wu Zhao, was the first and only Empress of China, who ruled from 660 to 705 and she would do anything to ensure that she stayed in charge.
Julie D'Aubigny・Julie d'Aubigny, better known as Mademoiselle Maupin or La Maupin, was a French opera singer....but what's more exciting is that she was a bisexual, cross-dressing, swords-woman, and murderer.
Alexander the Great・Alexander the Great was the king of Macedonia (336–323 bce), who overthrew the Persian empire, carried Macedonian arms to India, and laid the foundations for the Hellenistic world of territorial kingdoms.
HOLLYWOOD HISTORY TO RESEARCH:
The Ava Gardner, Barbara Payton, Lana Turner Love Affair・known as the most scandalous love affair in Hollywood, Gardner, Payton, and Turner were secretly sleeping together for years....and Frank Sinatra was not happy about it.

The Journal of Wizardry
The search for the secret of eldritch blast (1/2)
Written by ███████ ██ ██████████
I still remember the times, I was fresh out of the Academy of Arcane Arts or rather the Akademie Arkaner Künste since I studied in Germany to avoid student loans, I had graduated with a major in journalism and a minor in combat magic because instead of a long dissertation you could just win some fight, I was still young and knew nothing of the world, but I thought I knew everything, one thing that bugged me throughout all the one and a half lectures in combat magic I attended though was that only one spell seemed to matter, the only one I ever seemed to need if I mastered it, everything else was kind of irrelevant, every magic battle I ever engaged in, I won with it, Eldritch Blast a simple beam evaporating your opponent in an instant, any shield gets crushed, every reflector or trap ignored. I did not understand, why was this even a class then? In any case, when you're young and have neither authority nor money you can't worry about those things, I worked at numerous news agencies and slowly climbed to the top, now that I am a highly renowned investigative reporter, I can finally lift this mystery.
At first I attempted the easy way out, I read all literature I could find, I even hired an Eldritch translator to not go insane reading this much ancient tongue. Most trails went cold quickly, the most promising one suggested the ancient sources and the spirit force might connect to the Blast in multiple interlocked locations on certain rune areas called miasma pulsors that were one of the main techniques used in spell crafting before more sophisticated force binders were invented, this may lead to an accidental hyper-efficient purification-system, but modern spells have higher degrees of purification in them, which made this theory improbable. After a few days of feeble attempts, two translators gone mad, another one well on the way, I gave up, the knowledge I was seeking was not in books the public has access to, which is understandable considering the power of the ancient blast spell, if ██████ could just learn everything about the spell, riots would soon rise again in the civilised colonies of ████. So I had to consult other sources.
The University of Casters in ███ ████ let me consult their Ancient Libraries of Darkness (thank you very much Professor Feebleknot de Hyrmnal for your active support and keeping the gate-seals away even when it got hot and gooey ;) ) but even in this highly impressive collection of dark knowledge I found only breadcrumb trails that led nowhere, only a mention of an ancient spirit somewhere in Scotland seemed promising. Before I went there and risked wasting much time and effort, I wanted to take a step back and just ask one of the faculties professors of combat magic.
Yolschmirtz Ohh-Zk-EE-hein, told me he might know more about the topic and invited me into his home to talk, it was a cold rainy day, perfect for talking inside, as I entered his house, a cute cabin in the woods of █████, I was greeted by a cozy warmth, the walls, the same logs visible on the outside, decorated with many trinkets and knick-knacks I could have spent hours exploring, but I was here for a reason. Mr. Ohh-Zk-EE-hein or as he invited me to call him, Yollee, a short, nimble man with black hair and a friendly face contrasted by his numerous scars on the left side of his face, led my past a large wooden table bending under the weight of candles, books and other arcane instruments I had never seen before, to a fireplace in the conservatory on the other side of his house. Next to it, prepared were two camping chairs, a tiny glass table and two wooden cups of steaming tea, all on a white fluffy rug.
After we had settled down and I explained my question and previous attempts at answering it, he explained to me that it was obvious I wouldn't find anything with those methods. "It is clear you have little expertise in this field, ancient arts like the Eldritch Blast, however well documented they may appear to be, are not fully explainable through the medium of human speech, even less so in any human invented written form like the Eldritch Script or ancient tongue, at-least not by humans." "You could only get very surface level like this." I asked him how else I was supposed to finally understand this strange phenomenon that has plagued me since the very beginning of my career, at this point I did not even care about the article anymore, I simply wanted to know. After thinking for a long time, the rain playing it's steady beat on the round glass walls of the conservatory, he concluded: "Without years of training in all the combat, arcane, dark, and seal arts, this is impossible." The fact I even for a split second considered this idea shows my commitment to this, I obviously would not spend years training. And so but one idea remained, the ancient spirit in Scotland. ⬧
Part 2 soon, now: sleep

EU ministers have urged member states to do more to screen migrants and expel those regarded as a security risk, amid rising concerns over militant attacks.
Interior and justice ministers were meeting days after a teacher in France and two Swedish nationals in Brussels were murdered by suspected Islamists.
Police across Europe are on high alert in the wake of the Israel-Hamas war.
In France, President Emmanuel Macron has attended the funeral of the teacher fatally stabbed at a school last week.
The service for Dominique Bernard, who was 57, took place in the northern city of Arras. Mr Macron met the family beforehand.
The literature teacher and father of three has been posthumously awarded the Legion of Honour, France's highest civilian decoration.
Dominique Bernard was among several staff who tried to tackle the attacker. Another teacher and a security guard were seriously wounded.
"He was sensitive and quiet. He did not like the sound and fury of the world," Bernard's wife Isabelle, who is also a teacher, told mourners.
The service was broadcast on a screen in Arras's Place des Héros (Heroes' Square).
The suspect, named as 20-year-old Mohamed Mogouchkov, is a Russian national of Chechen origin. He shouted "Allahu Akbar", or "God is greatest", during last Friday's attack, eyewitnesses said.
He has been arrested and faces murder and terror charges.
Mohamed Mogouchkov was known to security services. As a former pupil at the school, he had alarmed teachers with his extremist language, reports said.
Police have also arrested several members of his family, including a brother aged 17, his mother, a sister and an uncle.
As European Union ministers met in Luxembourg on Thursday, EU migration commissioner Ylva Johansson told reporters: "It's important that those individuals that could cause a security threat to our citizens be returned forcefully, immediately."
She added: "We need to be more efficient, close the loopholes and be quicker on decisions to carry out returns."
French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said there was "still a bit naivety either in the institutions of some countries, or in the EU".
Monday's attack in Brussels also highlighted problems with the EU's migration and asylum systems.
The Tunisian gunman, identified as Abdesalem Lassoued, shot dead two Swedish football fans on the evening of a Euro 2024 qualifier, before being killed by police the following morning.
Belgian authorities revealed on Thursday that the 45-year-old had tried and failed to get asylum in four European countries - Norway, Sweden, Italy and Belgium. Sweden's migration agency had earlier said he had served a prison sentence there between 2012 and 2014.
He had stayed in Belgium illegally after a bid for asylum was rejected in 2020.
A plan to make it mandatory for EU states to try to return people staying illegally has been stalled for years.
The war between Israel and Islamist militant group Hamas has led to fears of further violence from militants on the continent.
Italy is imposing controls on its border with Slovenia for 10 days because of concerns over national security and irregular migration. Slovenia will follow suit on its borders with Croatia and Hungary from Saturday.
Several other EU member states, including Austria, the Czech Republic and Poland, have already imposed checks in a bid to counter people-smuggling.

A friend from the other side
@dreamy625 and @thiswatch-lepparddef-werehi this is the fic I told you about!
I wrote this (well, a short version of this) for school a few years ago and thought it could be a good fic. It is about Steve as a ghost, but I don't think it is very scary.
Warnings: Swearing, haunting, mention of a ghost.
Part one: The arrival.
Student exchange, in my fifteen years old head, the word means freedom: Getting away from my hometown. And when you are a boy from Saint-Ludger-De-Milot getting away is a serious thing (Check on a map, you'll get it). The government fund agency advertisement said "A friend from the other side of the country, the ocean or even the world" so I jumped on the opportunity. Usually I am not great with new people, but when I let go of my bad will, it goes well.
But when I saw the address I would be sent to I jumped off my my seat: 44 Old Church Street, London, last house of guitarist Steve Clark!
Oh, and I am matched with a girl called Madeline Rogers, they got us together for our "Great interest in music, history and academic subjects", I guess I'll see how it goes.
-------------------------------------------------------
Madeline unlocks the door as I stand in front of her house with my suitcase in my left hand, my amp in the right one and my guitar case on my back. A beautiful building indeed, bricks on all of its exterior walls (well, the ones I can see), nice arches over the door and ground floor windows, the white cornice also enhance the brownish red walls and I like how the higher floors' windows are shaped, like an half of an octagon, I would say.
God, I didn't realize my mom's home decoration and architecture magazines got that much into my head...
The inside is just as wonderful, the Rodgers seem to have been willing to preserve its ancient style, furnishing it mostly with wooden antiques, but still managed to avoid any heaviness.
-My mum is a home designer. Madeline informs me when she catches my admirative look.
-Well, I'm sure she's very good at it, from what I see here.
-Thank you. You can go put your stuff upstairs if you want, I'll show you around. She offers as her father enters the house. Follow me. She says as she walks toward the u-shaped staircase, making the floor crack at every step. I love this place already.
-Down there is the kitchen and dining room. She points at a row of stairs leading to the basement. On every floor, there is a toilet at the end of the staircase, she says as we pass by a door and begin to walk upstairs.
-My parents' room is the one facing the street, the other one is my mother's office. She indicates as we pass shortly on the first floor.
-Here we are! She exclaims as we arrive at the top of the stairs, this is the guests' room, your room in other words. I'll be downstairs if you need me!
There are two doors, the one she stated to be mine and another one, probably leading to her bedroom.
There is a wooden desk under the window, from there I can see the tiniest backyard I ever looked upon, on the opposite side of the room, there is an assorted dresser, I put my guitar on it, since I couldn't bring the stand with me, in the drawers underneath it, I placed most of my clothes, excepted for my white shirt and tie, which I hung one of the wardrobes on each side of the bed to keep the shirt from wrinkling.
There is a little lamp hanging from the wall behind the bed, you know, the kind with a little chain to turn the light on and off. As I sit on the bed, I can't help but think that my reflection in the stand up mirror across thr room would make a nice painting, if someone had enough time to waste at painting me.
-Antoine, the diner is ready. I hear Madeline's voice through the door.
I follow her again, this time on the opposite direction.
We all sit together at the table in front of our plates of curry, first time I eat that, it is very... Yellow. A sharp contrast with the room we are in: Very few natural light pass by those small window, leaving it all to the luminaire hanging above the table to light the whole room. There is an opening leading to the stairs behind me, two doors on the wall on my right, to get in the kitchen and another one on the wall on my left, probably some pantry...
-It's the drinks cabinet, but don't go there, it's haunted. Mr. Rodgers jokes, causing his whole family to laugh.
Steve?
-The former owner wanted to sell the house because he thought there was a ghost! Apparently "someone" was finishing his bottles. If you want my advice he just didn't remember doing it himself... Madeline's mother explains.
-And, did you experience... Weird stuff?
-Sometimes we hear noises, like footsteps, and a sound... like a long squeaking, but it is a fairly old building, so it is probably structural rather than spectral.
-It would make sense... I mumble.
-Looks like you scared our guest, Nathaly. Her husband chuckles.
-------------------------------------------------------
Midnight, yet my silly brain thinks it is something like seven o'clock... Everyone else went to bed at 9:30, so what was I supposed supposed to do? I stopped playing my guitar one hour ago and now I just lay here thinking about Steve. It is weird to think that I stay in the same house as he lived. Yes, lived, because he lived here before dying here. Forget it, that sounded much better in my head.
Still, the idea of his ghost driving the previous owner out of the house is quite amusing.
Knlong, klong, klong
Footsteps, right by the bed, boots on the hardwood floor. No, it can't be real...
I don't think I could move if I wanted to, I'm way too freaked out.
I can't really see in the dark room but the noise seems to stop by the dresser then... It's something else... That squeaking Mrs. Rodgers talked about, I hear it, it is much more than that, it's, it's a guitar! A long note, with a lot of bending, I can't believe they thought it was just "structural"! It keeps getting to a higher and higher sound, and louder, I feel like my ears are about to explode.
-Fuck! I exclaim as I finally snap out of my fear and sit up to turn on the light, but there's nothing, no one. Just my guitar case wide open although I closed it when I stopped playing.
This is definitely going to help me to sleep...
-------------------------------------------------------
Eleven o'clock on the clock on the nightstand and six in my head, not so bad of a time to wake up actually. I turn around and see my guitar proped up against the dresser, wait, wasn't it in its case... Heck, I remember last night!
I jump on my feet and inspect the instrument, everything is perfectly normal, then I take a look at the furniture only to find all my picks disposed to spell Hello on top of it.
-It has to be some bad joke... I whisper.
No, the picks now write, moving around like it was someone placing them.
-... Steve?
Yes.
-Clark?
YES.
-I... I... I mumble uselessly.
The picks start to spin aimlessly, sometimes forming the beginning of a letter, as if he was looking for what he wants to say.
Don't he finally writes before changing the picks, worry... won't .... hurt... you.
-What do you want?
Help ... Me ... Take ... Shape
-How?
The picks go back in a little pile and my guitar gets lifted from the ground like if someone was about to play, then the strings start to ring along to the intro of Mirror Mirror (Look Into My Eyes).
I turn around to face the mirror, only to see my own face of total disbelief.
-And what am I supposed to do?
I see the guitar being carefully placed back against the dresser, then the picks start to move again.
Try ... This.
One of them floats up to me, then just waits there until I hold my hand up for it to be dropped in my palm.
-So... I just have to put it on the glass?
Yes
Am I really listening to a ghost telling me how to help him get back to a "shape"? Can jet lag cause hallucinations?
Anyway, I close my fist around the little piece of plastic and walk up to the mirror. I clasp it to the cold glass with my thumb and... Nothing, of course there's nothing, what was I thinking about?! I pinch the pick to retrieve it but as I pull it away, I see two other fingers holding it from the other side of the mirror.
-Holly shit! I exclaim as a hand follows the fingers, along with an arm.
Soon enough, a foot steps out of the mirror and I let go of the pick, him now being able to get out by himself.
Long blond hair, a leather jacket over some white t-shirt and black jeans covering the upper part of a pair of boots, no doubt about it: I did really bring Steve Clark back from the grave.
Wait, why am I seeing those black dots all of a sudden?
-Thank you kid... No, don't fain't, please! I hear him as I now don't see anything and feel myself falling backwards.

Where the Heart Meets the Sea | PROLOGUE PART 1
Tumblr media
So this is my first Pirates of the Caribbean longfic and a rewrite of Curse of the Black Pearl with my own OC’s who I love VERY much! With this longfic, I aim to write characters that feel alive and give them love stories, while still assigning them agency and identities outside of said love stories. This is part one of the prologue.
Link to the fic on Ao3
1716
Where the monkey stood was amidst the path the captain was taking in return to his precious Black Pearl. It was a peculiar thing. Its little tail fluttered on the sand and its beady eyes, full of curiosity and wonder, looking up at Hector Barbossa, was enough for the man to become attentive to it. The monkey came into view the minute Barbossa and his men stepped out of the cave, and it was just sitting there, looking up at him as if he was his long lost mother and as if it was awaiting some sort of instruction.
“Well, hello there,” Barbossa cooed. A grin already decorated his weathered face due to having found an enormous amount of wealth on the Isla De Muerta not but a few hours before, but then in the wee hours of the morning a dinky animal was greeting him.
No matter the passive looks the worthless cockroaches he called a crew gave him as he knelt down and held out his hand to the capuchin monkey. In that moment, the only thing that mattered was this interaction with one of nature’s proudest inventions — well, that and the massive amounts of treasure he had just acquired. The lord did well in leaving Cortes’s treasure in his path.
The monkey chirped, its nostrils moving about the moment Barbossa’s hand came within its perimeters. Barbossa often amassed various encyclopedic books detailing all types of animals and fauna, and he recalled one book which encompassed dozens of sketches of all kinds of species of monkeys. The capuchin was more whimsical in person, and a sketch could hardly capture the wonder of such an animal.
When was the last time Barbossa had a companion? He wondered. The crew were but his workers and nothing more.
The monkey was still investigating his calloused hand, and then it started using its little hands to continue; they were like dwarf planets amongst a galaxy. Hector flipped over his hand and his palm faced towards the sky, and in return, the monkey placed its palm on his. It then looked into Hector’s eyes. The sight brought a warm smile on his face.
Some form of understanding was established, and a form of connection even, had just been made between him and the capuchin monkey.
“I think I’m gonna take ye with me, little one,” Hector’s voice was hoarse, and he couldn’t recall the last time a sentence not riddled with a captain’s tone left his mouth. The last memory of someone treating him as anything other than a captain was gone with the wind, and so seeing the friendly monkey look up at him with intrigue instead of fear was enough to swell his cold black heart.
Some members of The Black Pearl surrounded Hector and the monkey. He noticed Pintel in the corner of his eye with a face of anticipation while many others were still beholding supplies to the ship at the edge of the beach.
“Aye! Looks like ye found dinner cap’n,” he said.
Hector’s eyes swayed from the monkey and he gave the bald man a look of contempt, along with a wrinkled nose. Only the monkey’s presence was enough for him to restrain from yelling at the moronic crewmate. “I intend t’ not harm this animal ye here see, ye fool.” The monkey was still looking at Hector with beady eyes. “I intend t’ take in this critter, perhaps give it a name,” he said with honey in his tone.
He turned back to the monkey as Pintel dismissed himself.
“Ye wanna come with me?” As if on queue the monkey jumped on to Hector’s arm. Hector, in slight shock, twitched. But he then welcomed the primate that began to familiarize itself with his warmth. It sat on Hector’s shoulder, and Hector, with the excitement of a child, couldn’t keep himself from grinning. The creature chirped and chirped, and eventually it started burying its grubby fingers into Hector’s auburn wet hair. A giggle escaped Hector’s mouth.
“Looks like ye do,” Barbossa murmured, bringing his finger to the monkey’s chin to give it an affectionate scratch. The animal’s smooth fur brought comfort to Hector’s skin. The monkey startled upon hearing Hector yell out a “gentleman!” which was an attempt to address his crewmates.
“Aye cap’n!” many said in unison, eyes singing of wonder and curiosity.
Hector looked upon his men with pride — but not towards them, but rather towards his newfound companion. “Tis right here be the newest member of our crew! We shall welcome him and name him!”
“I says we should sell it! That monkey would bring ye several gold pieces,” said Bo’sun, who used to be in the business of exporting exotic pets before his life as a pirate came about.
Hector felt an anger bubble in his veins. “I need no audacious words from you, you cretin!” his brash voice rumbled into the air. “I says ‘tis here creature will be our new member and so he’s will be!”
Bo’sun’s lips shut like a zipper.
“We should name him Monkey!” said Ragetti, smiling and eyeing the animal resting on Barbossa’s shoulder.
Several heads turned to him.
“Name a monkey, monkey?” responded Pintel, with judgment in his voice. “Ye really do have the intelligence of a fish!”
Barbossa rolled his eyes.
“We should name the monkey Cortes,” spoke a voice behind Bo’sun. It was Koelher.
Finally an interesting choice, thought Hector. His eyebrow tugged upwards in interest.
“Oh oh oh!” piped up Pintel. “We should name him Jack!” He chuckled at the irony, and the others followed.
Barbossa’s pupils widened in humor and interest. He grinned, showcasing his rotting teeth. “Aye! Now ain’t that ironic!”
A bang of pirate laughter filled the breeze and the vacancy of Isla De Muerta, then the monkey made a small squeal, as if to respond to Pintel’s suggestion.
“'Tis calls for a vote! Whoever sees the monkey be called Cortes, raise yer hands!”
A few did.
“Now raise yer hands if ye think we should name the monkey Jack!”
The majority of the crew raised their hands, beating those that were in favor of the name Cortes.
“Jack The Monkey,” Bo’Sun mused, humored at the sheer contrariety of such a name for the creature.
“Aye, Jack The Monkey,” Barbossa repeated, scratching Jack’s chin with his roughened and outgrown nail. He then looked at his bountiful ship which carried hundreds of precious gold coins, feeling the happiest he’d ever felt in a very long time.
One month passed after the conquering of Cortes’s beloved treasure, and the festivities and celebrations were not yet coming to an end. The men had come and gone to various taverns and brothels, spending their hard earned plunder via indulging in tender nights with various women and boozing rum. The Aztec coins, with their shiny detail and indented skull image, traveled throughout Tortuga, traded and lost within innkeepers’ pockets and prostitutes’ bosoms alike. Then the coins would eventually reach other commoners of various professions, even seeing themselves traveling through the Caribbean sea and the many lands.
The night arrived, and after many hours of engaging in a pleasurable encounter with a harlot at The Faithful Bride, Hector decided it was time for some well-deserved rest.
Jack The Monkey’s little teeth munched down on the apple splice, his jaws bobbing to the sides. He was on the tabletop adjacent to the bed in which the whore lay, enjoying his snack with not a care in the world. The light from various candles illuminated his furry figure and a portion of the quarters Barbossa chose for the night.
“Your monkey is darlin’,” the woman said, smiling, the thinning bedsheet barely covering her bare breasts.
Women loved an esteemed captain with an animal as company, Hector noticed. It seemed to him that Jack The Monkey made him much more approachable. Not that he was complaining.
“Aye, he’s friendly too.” Barbossa was still lacking clothing, and he saw no reason to slip on any garments. The only thing he wore was his gray bandana, wrapped around his head.
“Is he, now?” the woman teased, bringing her hand to Jack’s face in an effort to pet him. Jack, in response, did not bother humoring her — the only priority on his mind was his lovely treat. The woman did not appear fazed, however. “Why name him Jack?”
Hector turned to her, and in his eyes was pure facetiousness while his lip curved upwards in a smirk. He was about to detail his winning of The Black Pearl and start a proud oration on his mutiny against Jack Sparrow when a knock half-startled him and the prostitute.
The men were specifically ordered to not disrupt their captain in the late hours of night! Who the hell bloody was it?
Disgruntled and possibly homicidal, Hector slipped on his breeches and his loose shirt, which still allowed his chest hair visible to the naked eye.
“Who's the goddamn blaggard showin’ up here unannounced!” he yelled, finally opening the door and coming face to face with none other than Bill Turner.
Bill’s head hung down in timidity. Hector believed him to be a coward — what pirate can’t even look his captain in the eye?
“I’m sorry to bother you, ca-“
“What do ye need??” Hector’s voice was a tad too loud, and it was loud enough for commoners among the hall of the tavern.
Bill’s eyes diverted from the floor onto Hector’s icy eyes, and his lips tightened in a straight line. He was nervous. As he should’ve been, having disrespected the captain’s orders.
“I need t’ speak with ye,” Bill finally stuttered out.
The annoyance in Hector’s blood began to bubble. “What could possibly be so important that ye come to me at this hour??”
Bill’s lips twitched in hesitance. “It’s about Jack… and the gold we took.”
A few seconds of silence followed. Hector’s eyebrows raised, his face full of anticipation. Bill finally spoke up again. “I don’t think what we did t’ Jack was all that fair, cap’n. And… I fear that what that witch told us about the gold could be true.”
Not only did the valueless man disrupt Hector’s personal time, but he even went as far as to pester him about Jack’s marooning on the basis of some pathetic sense of righteousness and guilt! And he was going on about that damned lie about some curse!
Bill didn’t have much time to dodge the jagged clench of Barbossa’s hands; he had pulled him by his shirt. All that stood between Hector and Bill’s faces was but one thin spread of air.
“Ye listen t’ me y’ little weasel,” Barbossa hissed. He saw a drop of his spit slatter onto Bill’s face. “I did what was right for the crew. The curse is all but a lie and I know not why you come here with that hogwash when we’s been spendin’ and spendin’ and everyone seems t’ be plenty happy. If ye wanna question me methods of handling the lot of ye then ye better be prepared t’ meet the sharks. If it weren’t for me ye wouldn’t be spendin’ the past few days lounging about in this place! Jack wouldn’t have been as generous with the treasure as I was!”
The rackety pitch of Hector’s voice caused several heads in the hall of the tavern to face the two men. He did not care if uninvolved parties could hear his outbursts, in fact, he hoped that they paid attention to them — for what better way to gain respect than to instill fear? To let onlookers know what would proceed if they dare threaten him to any capacity?
Bill’s lips were shaking. “I am telling you, Hector, that Jack may have not been the best captain, but he was still our mate. You were his mate. His first mate. And you betrayed him. We could’ve taken a much better approach, and-”
Hector had heard enough. He grunted as he pushed Bill, who met the wooden floor with a thud. “We’re pirates shrimpy. Ye best believe that a few promises will be broken. Did ye forget that dear old Jack led us t’ three failed missions before we even set sail for Isla De Muerta?”
Bill didn’t get any words out. He only looked up at the captain as Hector kneeled down and said, “looks t’ me like ye want to join him.”
Hector felt the whore’s presence in the doorway, most likely in shock. But he did not care.
Bill gulped and even his own eyes began to plead, “no! Don’t Hec-“
“Captain!” Hector yelled.
“Captain. Please. I only think that we owed him some mercy since he served us well for a few years. I mean no disrespect towards your ability to captain the crew. And please listen t’ me, lately I’ve not been feeling myself. I seem t’ be.. I just- I don’t feel human, and it could be because of what we committed. Maybe even because of what we’ve even done to Jack. I - I have a child and a wife, please.”
A silence came about. Barbossa’s eyes stayed cold and malicious, burning into Bill’s soul. Was he capable of granting some compassion towards Turner? Maybe. Maybe deep down he did not think ridding a child of its father was the most moral thing. But Captain Hector Barbossa had no moral basis in the first place. He was a man of plundering and a man of the harsh life of sea! There was no space in his heart for compassion or love or any of those silly virtues. He was a pirate! And so he should have acted as such.
And plus, eyes were on him and Turner. What would fools think if he were to show an ounce of weakness? Some fragile sense of goodness, left for interpretation by onlookers? Suddenly whispers would spread of Barbossa going soft and tender.
He would not have it.
He finally spoke to Bill’s trembling self, who was still sputtering and howlering on about how he wasn't feeling himself. “There’ll be no questioning of me authority, shrimpy.”
The rocking of the ship was as familiar to a pirate as breathing air. Sometimes after a bountiful meal or after bedding a harlot (or both), Hector would stand before the apertures in his cabin, and just take in the beautiful sight of the sea and the warmth that radiated from the candles. He would fall into streams of inner musings, contemplating his past, present, and future. He would go over regrets and successes, the past lovers he no longer knew the taste of, and his boyhood which consisted of warm sunny days on his father’s farm.
Even if he was only thirteen, he sprinted straight into manhood the minute he deserted his humble cottage. He kissed his mama’s cheek as tears streamed down her face, her heart both prideful and angry at her brave son, and pledged that he would one day bring her enough coins to afford divine silks and enough to buy all the meat their local market carried.
And so he did.
And then he left for the seas again, and eventually fate brought him to Shipwreck Cove, where he crossed paths with Captain Teague and his delinquent son Jack Sparrow.
He finally was a successful captain, as he always set out to be. Jack was out of his way, and Bill was punished. He had the respect and fear of the crew, so he could sleep peacefully at night knowing his kingdom was not suspected to be compromised.
But what now?
What else did he desire in his life? What could have been possibly missing?
He gave one last admiring look at the moon, and turned to his desk and picked up his chalice of red wine. Wine was for when he was in deep thought, and rum was for leisure times.
He brought the chalice to his lips, but the wine did not seem to taste quite right. Instead, it lacked any ounce of the bitter tang wine usually held.
It tasted like nothing.
And it was quite odd, because moments before it tasted quite like the usual.
The wine had somehow rid itself of its taste.
He looked at Jack and saw that he wasn’t enjoying his piece of apple, he even looked quite irritated. The monkey threw the piece onto the floor, and started screeching and jumping on Hector’s desk the loudest he could, as if to get his master’s attention.
Hector’s eyes squinted in pure dumbfoundedness, and that’s when Pintel and Ragetti barged into his quarters with unsteady legs and terrified faces.
“Captain!” They both shouted in unison.
Hector’s head spun to face the two fools, ready to yell at them for their disrespect.
“Master Twig! He-” Ragetti started.
“He’s a skeleton! A beast!” Pintel finished.
“What blasted nonsense ye lot be saying??” Barbossa yelled, walking towards the pair, one leg dragging behind the other.
“He’s a skeleton!!” Ragetti yelled, only his voice cracked and his eyes were practically bulging in terror.
A commotion of men screaming outside started, startling the three men. Hector was more confused than ever, but there was no time to ask questions when a topsy turvy war suddenly broke out on the ship.
Hector pushed past Pintel and Ragetti and when he lay his eyes upon the disturbance, he could swear the world turned upside down.
The crew surrounded a dead man. Only the dead man was alive and was without flesh and meat.
“Captain! Look at me! What am I??” A voice — Twig’s voice yelled, only the body with Twig’s voice did not look like Twig.
And everyone kept on screaming and screaming in terror while Barbossa stood still and breathless. All the flapping and flurrying suddenly became drowned out by his shock, and the only thing he could do was compulsively reach for his pistol and shoot at the skeleton which bore Twig’s voice.
And it did not die.
Then Hector’s eyes caught his hand. He too was missing flesh.

Visual Analysis
The piece of art I choose to analyze in detail is, “Two Allegorical Figures”, by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. A Fresco transferred to canvas painting, with a strong presence. This piece first struck me because of its elongating height, 148 x 75 in. (375.9 x 190.5 cm), it seemed powerful to me, worth studying.  The strong female energy drew me in, a woman appearing strong with her head held high as a man sat on the ground next to her with what appeared as armor on, as he is looking downwards, to me is a sign of weakness. The pyramid, the pyramids shadow, and the elevated surface they are on makes the piece appear three dimensional in person. I felt there were so many layers to the piece. I felt a since of unity with this work because of the bronze and grey, marble looking background taking over the piece, brought a sense of power and eternity.
After standing there staring at the piece I realized there really was more to look at. I then saw a lion in the armor of the man, the money or gold the man was holding, the lion behind the man, the belly button of the woman! I was so surprised on how much more I started to see. This observation changed the way I will look at art in the future! A glance is not good enough, you start to see all the details the artist has put into the work. The small details to the large details that would go missed without observation, especially a piece with such unity like this one.
This piece makes me feel powerful. Proud to be a woman. I believe this painting gave me those feelings because of the strength of the woman. Her energy is strong, stronger than the lions in this painting. I made me have feelings of the power of self and how powerful I truly am. The money, lion, armor, does not distract the woman. She remains tall with her head high.
This piece is balanced by the pyramid in the back as the main focal point, then the attention goes to the woman, the man, the lion, and then the elevated surface they are on. The focus is to the center of the piece where all actions lie, and the pyramid emphasizes the height of the piece, which is a dominant factor as well.  Tiepolo was a famous Italian painter and a master of Venetian school (Whistler, 2004). Two Allegorical Figures epitomizes the Venetian aesthetic of the period. “His approach to religious art is characterized by candor and naturalism, while he was responsive to the different concerns of patrons and viewers at a time when the church was faced with new kinds of devotion and criticism” (Whistler, 2004). “In sixteenth-century Venice, paintings were often treated as living beings” (GmbH & Co KG, 2017).
My conclusion is that this piece was most likely made for someone in power or of high stature. That is why I choose this piece, because of its strength. Tiepolo was a Master of Art in his time and decorated palaces and royal places. I believe that this piece as it states as the museum is made to sit on the wall at an entry point or fireplace, this would imply a very large entry way due to the size of the piece of art. I was very happy with the piece of art I chose and the artist that made it. I was able to learn about a master of Venetian Art.
