Best Tacos In Cozumel? Cozumel Taco Tour
Tumblr media
There seems to be an unwritten rule that the best tacos on any island can be found in the town’s center. Thick handmade corn tortillas with fresh, handmade meat fillings are the most popular and delicious tacos in Cozumel.
Try these six places to get delicious tacos that everyone will love!
Diego’s Tacos (65 Av, right across from the airport)
El Ñero (30 Av at Salas)
Mr. Taco (Transversal just west of 65 Ave)
Los Nopales (30 Av at Calle 19 S)
El Pique (Corner of 30 Ave and the Transversal Road)
Los Sera (30 Av and Calle 5)
Diego’s Tacos
Your first destination will be Diego’s Tacos right across the road from the airport.
The fish tacos are amazing and the friendly wait staff delivers them. Everyone loves Diego’s, which is why it makes sense to take their word for it when they tell you that their fish tacos are the best in Cozumel.
West coast Baja-style, these island fish tacos are prepared full of breaded or grilled fish. They will present you with amazing salsas ranging from mild to very spicy.
The area has simple outdoor seating, which is covered with a new roof.
El Ñero
You’ll never find better tacos than those served at El Nero. Forget about love. Tacos are the only thing you need and El Nero delivers. No fancy tablecloths, the usual cheap and insubstantial table napkins, and all the deliciousness you ever dreamed up.
There’s no better way to enjoy a plate of tacos than to sit down and eat them in Mexico City style. Most servers speak little English, but you get by. They have paper menus now that tell you what you need to know. They even have everything written on the wall menus in case your eyesight is as bad as mine.
Besides pork and beef, they have tongue (try it!) and Mexican sausage. And then delicacies we dare you to try – intestines and brain. Tacos are always cheap, but they’re also great.
Mr. Taco
Tacos al pastor are a must-try when you’re visiting Mexico. They make these Mexican delicacies of pork that is marinated in spices and cooked over a flame. They traditionally served this dish at barbeques and on streets in Mexico, Central America, and the Middle East.
The local Mexican people could not eat lamb, but with the arrival of Lebanese immigrants, the word al pastor appeared. Later, the local shepherds (pastores) adopted this method of cooking meat on a spit out in the countryside and later they named it al pastor (shepherd style).
You can’t miss these large spits with a mountain of meat displayed in front of Mr. Taco. There are plenty of night-haunts that are open until late, so Mr. Taco is a perfect choice for that “second” dinner.
Los Nopales
A place with delicious food at a great price. This is not a fancy place, but it is authentic, clean, and has a wonderfully relaxing atmosphere. This is one of our favorite places in town. They make the tacos al pastor with hand-tossed tortillas.
There are two rotisseries at the counter where the server cuts the meat for your entrée while you watch. You’ll love the great nopales tacos con queso. They cooked the nopal cactus in a traditional Mexican way, and it tastes amazing.
If you’re a local or on vacation, this cute local restaurant is a must-try.
El Pique
This place is authentic, and families from all over come to try the recipes. This is the best chicken taco on the island of Cozumel. Hands down. You will notice the staff being helpful, and the cuisine is marvelous.
Their verde salsa is very spicy. The salsa rojo has an excellent flavor as well. They don’t open until 6 pm. The tacos al pastor here are everything tacos al pastor should be. Crispy, marinated pork, pineapple, onion, delicious salsa, and soft tortillas. Our favorite tacos also include the chorizo, and the alambre. The alambre is more expensive than the other tacos, but it makes multiple tacos in the one order.
Los Sera
You can try so many different tacos here. They have about 10 different choices of tacos. They are all incredible – taco el pastor, tacos de bistec, and kebabs. Simply delicious and an excellent value. Los Sera has the best queso fundido on the island. They also have pizza with the same el pastor, pineapple, onions, and manchego cheese – OMG the best!
Takeaway: These are the best places to go for tacos in Cozumel.

Come Discover The Magic Of Passion Island
Tumblr media
The Magic of Passion Island
Passion Island is a stunning tropical paradise located off the coast of Mexico. This private island is perfect for a romantic getaway, offering spectacular views of the Caribbean Sea, white sand beaches, and lush green jungles. Whether you’re looking for a romantic escape, a family vacation, or an adventure of a lifetime, Passion Island has something for everyone.
Passion island is also home to world-class amenities and services. The island’s tour operators serve fresh seafood with many local specialties, too. Passion Island’s waters are perfect for snorkeling, kayaking, and fishing. The surrounding coral reefs and abundant marine life make it a perfect spot for your adventure with a variety of activities, such as kayaking, snorkeling, and jet skiing.
Location of Isla de la Pasión.
A few years ago, a group of people purchased an island near Cozumel and created it into an eco-resort. Passion Island is a private island in the northern part of Cozumel. It’s called Isla Pasion, which means “passion island,” and it’s located less than 10 miles from Cozumel International Airport.
It is now the most famous beach on the island, with a secluded bay of soft white sand with crystal-clear water at the northernmost tip. In addition, it’s only a short drive from some of the best dive sites in the world, like Barracuda Reef and San Juan Reef.
How to get to Cozumel
Traveling from the United States to Cozumel is a straightforward process. First, you need to purchase a plane ticket from your departure airport to Cancun International Airport (CUN), Mexico. Once you arrive, there are several options to get to Cozumel. The most popular and economical option is to take a bus to Playa del Carmen, a 75-minute drive from Cancun. In Playa del Carmen, you now need to get on a ferry to Cozumel. The ferry ride takes 45 minutes and offers stunning views of the Caribbean. If you do not want to do the “bag drag”, you can also take a direct flight from the United States to Cozumel International Airport (CZM). Once you arrive in Cozumel, you can take the shuttle or rent a car to get to your hotel or destination. When planning your vacation, remember to check the current travel advisories, travel restrictions, and entry requirements to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience.
Transportation from Cozumel to Isla de la Pasión.
To get to Passion island, you can arrange for pickup at your hotel or your cruise pier depending on your mode of travel. This involves taking a bus from downtown San Miguel to the bay of Isla de la Pasión where you will take a ferry to Isla Pasion. This is the quickest way to get to Passion Island in Cozumel.
You’re going to take the ferry to the island, so it may as well be the package that includes food, drinks, and access to all the water sports and activities on the island. Some of the all-inclusive trips to Passion Island include English-speaking tour guides, round-trip transportation, kids’ activities, babysitters, and an all-inclusive food and beverage service.
If you have a rental car, drive yourself to the ferry at the bay of Isla de la Pasión. The car ride is about half an hour long, and there are quite a few bumps along the way. It is your responsibility to ensure you are insured and permitted to drive this car on this road.
At the Bay, free parking is available and then you can board the small ferry across the bay for the 10-minute ride to Passion Island. The ferries cross a lagoon, not an open sea, so the water is calm. After your visit to Passion Island, you’ll get on the ferry back to Isla de la Pasión bay and drive straight back to Cozumel.
What to do on the island?
If you’re planning on taking in some sun, then Isla Pasión is the perfect place to go. It has hammocks over the water to rest and cool off a massage area, and a small floating park on the sea with an obstacle course.
If you’re looking for speed, how about jetting off on a ride on a high-speed jet boat? We’re in a high-powered speedboat and we’ll make sharp maneuvers, so you can feel the adrenaline while you’re going toward the private island.
You can’t miss the unmissable activity at Isla Pasión – a kayak tour through Laguna Ciega. While you are kayaking, a guide shows you the species that live there and tells stories of the diverse wildlife in the mangroves, including various birds. The kayak tour lasts one hour and at the end of the tour, you can relax on the beach.
Eating after your Off-Road Adventures
If you’re adventurous and love thrill rides, the Off-road Adventure is the activity for you. It gives you the opportunity to experience thrill rides, all at an affordable price. The day begins by getting a 4×4 jeep to the North Point of Cozumel, then a boat takes you to the island of Passion. You can spend the day at the beach club, where you can lie in a hammock or on a lounger. If you get hungry, you can order à la carte food in the restaurant, or a drink.

5 Best Mayan Ruins On The Island Of Cozumel
Tumblr media
Welcome to Cozumel! This beautiful island is home to 5 of the best Mayan ruins, providing a window into the culture and beliefs of this ancient civilization. From the oldest ruins at El Cedral to the most important site at San Gervasio, we will explore the majestic remnants of the Mayan past and uncover the secrets of their amazing culture. Join us on a journey of discovery as we explore Cozumel’s ancient history and uncover the mysteries of the Mayan civilization.
San Gervasio Ruins
San Gervasio is the most significant archaeological site in Cozumel, revered by the Mayans as a place to honor their goddess, Ixchel. This deity held great importance in the Mayan belief system as the supreme authority on matters related to love, fertility, and health.
Among the most notable structures at San Gervasio is Las Manitas, a set of rooms where Lord Itzá de Cozumel lived over a thousand years ago. Other important buildings include Casa Alta, the Central Plaza, El Arco, Casa Grande, and Chi Chan Nah, which served as a site for rituals.
Visitors to San Gervasio can gain valuable insights into the Mayan way of life and spirituality while admiring the impressive architecture and craftsmanship that went into creating these structures. The site’s significance makes it a must-visit destination for anyone interested in learning about the history and culture of Cozumel.
How to get to San Gervasio
San Gervasio is located just 4 miles east of the town of San Miguel de Cozumel and is accessible via the island’s main crossroad. Visitors can arrange guided tours through many travel agencies, or opt for a taxi tour from one of the premier hotels in the city.
El Cedral Cozumel
In the town of El Cedral, the El Cedral Ruins are the oldest Mayan Ruins on the island, dating back to 800 AD. A striking white and red arch adorned with crosses marks the entrance to the ruins. Once the historical capital of Cozumel, all that remains of El Cedral is a small house-sized ruin. Despite its size, the site is accessible and worth a visit.
The town of El Cedral is home to the annual Festival of Santa Cruz and El Cedral Fair. Commemorating an attack during the Caste War of Yucatan, this tradition is over 150 years old and lasts for a week, featuring a fair, traditional food, live music, and bullfighting.
Getting to El Cedral
To reach the ruins of El Cedral, head south of Cozumel along the highway to the town of the same name. If you’re coming from Playa del Carmen, you can take a ferry to Cozumel and spend a day exploring the island’s various sites. Many tour operators offer combined tours of El Cedral and San Gervasio, which you can book online or through your hotel. However, because of its remote location, it may be difficult to find tours that only visit El Cedral.
Cozumel’s Museum for Mayan Artifacts
If you want to learn more about Cozumel and its people, visit the Museo de la Isla. This is the best museum on the island and it has been renovated and updated in 2020.
The museum has different galleries that show you the natural history, environment, and wildlife of Cozumel. You will see amazing photos and videos of the coral reefs, the mangroves, and the animals that live here. You will also learn about the human history of the island and how it has changed over time.
This is a great place to start your trip if you are new to Cozumel. You will get an excellent overview of the island and its culture. You will also discover some of the local holiday celebrations and how they reflect the history of the area.
The Museo de Cozumel is a must-see attraction for anyone who wants to know more about this beautiful island. You will enjoy your time here and gain valuable insights into Cozumel’s past and present.
Cozumel Museum Hours:  Tuesday – Sunday 9 am-5 pm  Admission: $9.00USD
El Caracol – Cozumel Mayan Ruin at Punta Sur
Another place you should visit in Cozumel is El Caracol, a small but fascinating Mayan ruin that is part of the Punta Sur Ecological Park. The island’s municipal government runs this park and they have a website where you can find more information about it.
The park is a beautiful place to enjoy nature and wildlife. You can swim and snorkel in the clear water and see the coral reefs and fish. You can also use the bathroom and changing facilities that are clean and comfortable.
To get to El Caracol, you will drive along the shore of the park on a dirt road that has amazing views. You will see the ruin near the crocodile lookout point, where you can also see some of these reptiles in their natural habitat.
El Caracol is a remarkable example of how the Mayans used their knowledge and skills to build structures that served different purposes. They used this one as an observatory and now includes a lighthouse for navigation. You will appreciate how this ruin is still standing after centuries and how it reflects Cozumel’s Mayan heritage.
The Punta Sur Ecological Park and El Caracol are great attractions for anyone who loves history, culture, and nature. You will have a wonderful time here and learn more about Cozumel’s past and present.
Park Site Hours:

Sacred Mayan Crossings
One of the most amazing events you can witness in Cozumel is the Sacred Mayan Crossings. This is a yearly event that happens in May or June and it recreates the ancient pilgrimages that the Mayans used to do to Cozumel. Hundreds of men and women dressed in Mayan costumes paddle from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel and back in two days using traditional canoes. The celebration starts with a journey to Xcaret, an important archaeological site in this area.
There, they spend the night doing rituals and prayers to Ix Chel, the Mayan goddess of fertility and the moon. They ask her for her blessings and guidance as they prepare for their voyage to Cozumel. They wait for the sunrise to start their adventure across the sea. This is a very spiritual experience that shows how the Mayans respect nature and their ancestors. The event is also a way of keeping their culture alive despite all the difficulties they have faced over history.
When they arrive at Cozumel, they go to the main temple of the island and make offerings to Ix Chel. They leave them there overnight so that she can communicate with them through signs and messages. They believe she will give them good luck and prosperity for their communities and families.
The next day, they get back on their canoes and head back to Playa del Carmen. As they paddle along, they feel a strong connection with nature and its elements, like the sea, the wind, and the stars. They consider this journey a mystical one because it changes them spiritually and emotionally.
This yearly ceremony is very important for the Mayans because it is a way of honoring their goddess and their ancestors. They remember how their ancestors were expert sailors and traders who used the sea as a source of wealth and knowledge. Through the ceremony, they also feel a connection with nature, which they believe is alive and gives life to everything on Earth. The Cozumel pilgrimage shows how much the Mayans respect the divine and how proud they are of their culture and history.
Exploring Cozumel’s Fascinating History: From the Ancient Mayan Civilization to Today’s Bustling Tourist Destination
Welcome to Cozumel, an island rich in history and culture! The Mayan civilization settled here around 2000 years ago and Cozumel became a sacred place for Mayan women to worship Ix Chel, the goddess of fertility, medicine, midwifery, and weaving.
Mayan women would undertake a long and arduous journey in wooden canoes to reach Cozumel, carrying all their possessions on their backs. At night, they would rest in the caves along the coast and prepare for the ceremony over the next few days. They would bathe in the sea and anoint their bodies with a mixture of salt, water, and herbs.
Today, the archeological site of San Gervasio stands in the center of the island as a reminder of the Mayan civilization and their worship of Ix Chel. It is a fascinating place to explore and learn about the history and traditions of the Mayans.
As we continue our journey through Cozumel, we must acknowledge the profound impact of the Spanish Conquest on this beautiful island. In the early 1500s, Cozumel was a bustling urban area with 40,000 inhabitants. However, in 1519, Hernan Cortes arrived on the island, bringing with him massive destruction and smallpox. The population dwindled to a meager 30 people, leaving the ancient Mayan civilization in ruins.
For centuries, Cozumel remained unoccupied until 1847, when a few families fleeing Spanish retaliation during the Caste War sought refuge on the island. These were the first permanent settlers, and they named their settlement San Miguel de Cozumel, which was the beginning of what we now know as the town of Cozumel.
The population of the island grew in the 19th century and by the 20th century, it had increased to over 100,000 people. With its stunning natural beauty and rich history, Cozumel became a major tourist destination and a popular place for cruise ships to stop and dock.
In response to the growing tourism industry, they constructed Cozumel International Airport, making it easier for visitors to travel to and from the island. Today, Cozumel remains a top tourist destination, offering visitors a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty.
Conclusion
Cozumel has many Mayan sites you can visit and admire. They are different in size and purpose, but they all show the beauty and wisdom of the Mayan culture. The locations and the architecture of these ancient ruins will amaze you. From El Cedral, the oldest site on the island, to San Gervasio, the most important site for worshipping the goddess Ix Chel, you will learn a lot about the history and culture of this region. Come with us on a tour of Cozumel’s Mayan heritage and explore the wonders of this ancient civilization.

Check Out is 11am at your Cozumel Airbnb
Tumblr media
Have you ever given much thought to what to do when check out is 11am at your Cozumel Airbnb?
This morning, you’re diving into the most amazing breakfast you’ve ever had at Cozumel’s most-recommended restaurant. You’ve just finished a couple of coffees, and you feel you could eat and drink the ocean itself. But when you look at the clock, you realize that it’s almost time to go. You glance at the Airbnb listing, hoping to find a note saying that check-out is at some other time, but no such luck.
If you’re staying at an Airbnb in Cozumel, you might not have thought about the checkout process. You just figured you could pick your checkout time just before your flight. But most Airbnbs in Cozumel have a checkout time at 11 am. This causes many of you to struggle when your Airbnb can not accommodate a late check-out because of the need of cleaning and preparing for the next guests.
There are options for you, though.
Tumblr media
If you need your bags held for you, there is a new luggage storage place you can use near the square. They work MON-SAT (9 am to 6 pm) by appointment only. You book online and pay in person when you need your luggage held.  HERE
Your 2nd option is to check your bags early at the airport and then head across the street to Diego’s Tacos. While this is a local place, tourists using the airport come here. I recommend eating here if you have a departing flight just to kill time. Out of all the fish tacos on the island, these are the best.
The 3rd option is to use the new lounge at the airport by the gates. They provide complimentary snacks, drinks, comfy chairs, WiFi, and television for the low price of $35 USD for 2 people. It is a Priority Pass Lounge and is a very nice option. The Chase Sapphire Reserve card gives priority pass membership with guest pass included.
You can also book your Airbnb or Condo an extra day if you have a late flight. This costs a bit more, but you will enjoy having the extra time to relax.
5. You can rent a car for the departure day that is on site at the airport. Pack the night before, then get up early and load the car up. This allows you to enjoy a full day around the island and you drop off the car as you arrive at the airport.
We hope this information helps you with your travels – Stingray Villa

The Best 5 Jeep Rentals on Cozumel
Tumblr media
The Best 5 Jeep Rentals on Cozumel.
Ernesto’s Rental: https://www.ernestosrental.com Carretera costera sur km4 Zone hotelera sur. (Right Across Park Royal hotel)
HTL Rental: http://htlrentals.com 5 Avenida entre calle 2 y Calle 4 , Centro
SharkRider Rental: https://www.facebook.com/sharkridercozumel/ 5a Av. Norte 41, Centro
Fiesta Car Rental: https://www.facebook.com/fiestacarrentalcozumel/ Calle 11 sur 598 entre 25 av. y 30 av.
Darth Car Rentals CZM: https://www.facebook.com/DarthCarRentalsCZM/
There are many ways to travel to Cozumel, whether you are going on a cruise or exploring the beautiful island for a few days. There is no crowd and the freedom of driving your own car while in Cozumel will make your stay one to remember.
The island is quite small, so transport options aren’t great and can be very expensive. Make the most of your vacation by avoiding the high-priced tours and making your own day trips. Follow these simple tips when renting a jeep in Cozumel.
Things to be aware of while renting Jeeps You need to understand that even in a Jeep if you leave the paved road surfaces you will void all of your insurance coverage for the Jeep. To take an off-road trip you need to be on a tour. There are Jeep, ATV, and buggy tours available if that is what you are looking for.
In 2020, Cozumel introduced a dedicated, two-way bicycle lane along the main coastal road. The primary avenue running through the downtown area is Melgar, which starts from the southern end of downtown and goes to the south hotel district, passing the International and Puerta Maya ports.
These bike lanes are for bicycles only. Motorized vehicles (including scooters) are not allowed in them. You also may not pass cars on the bike lanes.
It is only on this stretch of the island that we have this bike lane, but that is a very busy stretch. If you find yourself slowing down behind some vehicles in that lane, just wait it out and avoid being tempted to pass.
Please pay careful attention to where the cyclists are #1. Many people bike to work, but for those who don’t have to, it’s great to use bikes for recreation and competition in the tropics. Slow down to help everyone–including yourself! You should also look both ways when crossing the street near the bike lanes. Bicycles move fast and you do not hear them coming.
What happens if you get pulled over in Cozumel? First, don’t panic and stay calm. The police officers are not the bad guys. Even though they may look for a bribe from time to time, they’re still here to help the public.
The best thing you can do when the police officer speaks to you is to let them know if you know Spanish and how much.
The current procedure seems to be that an officer will ask for your driver’s license. He’ll then communicate what you did wrong.
That was easy. Here’s where it gets tricky: deciding whether what you did warrants a fine. If it does, the procedure is they will take your driver’s license to the local police station and you will pay there.
How do you tell whether the police officer is looking for a bribe? Just my feelings, but if the officer holds onto your driver’s license while talking to you and does not write anything on his ticket pad, he wants to talk to you about something off the books.
Parking on the Island Most places you want to stop outside of the city have very few parking restrictions and you can park on the beach as long as you respect the rules.
Inside the city, there are more rules. Follow all the posted signs, and also look at the curbs. DO NOT PARK in front of those areas that have no parking signs or where the curbs are painted yellow.

Where is Cozumel?
Tumblr media
Where Is Cozumel?
The island of Cozumel is located just off the northeast coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula – across the water from Playa Del Carmen and about an hour and a half from the Cancun airport. The Latitude and the Longitude of the Island of Cozumel is 20.422984 latitude and -86.922343 longitude.
1.Since the Yucatan Peninsula is part of Mexico, traveling to Cozumel is simple and economical.
2. Cozumel is the closest Caribbean island to the mainland United States and accordingly has much more direct tourist traffic from the U.S. than any other island in the Caribbean.
3. In fact, many individuals who visit Cozumel decide to remain a few days or a week instead of just a day or two because it is so simple to fly back and forth between Cozumel and the U.S.
4. Also, since everything you require is so close by, many visitors to Cozumel decide to extend their trip to other parts of Mexico or even to Central America. Quintana Roo was known as a part of the Yucatán state until October 8th, 1974. The Mexican state of Quintana Roo is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Mexico. It also has a wonderful historical past. The Maya inhabited it and later, Quintana Roo became part of the Spanish empire.
5. Cozumel is 34 miles long by 11 miles wide just off of Mexico’s Riviera Maya
6. Cozumel is quite unlike its neighbor. It’s largely undeveloped, with expanses of jungle and untouched shoreline that are a rarity on the mainland. Travelers don’t come for partying, boisterous beach bikini volleyball games, or designer shopping. Instead, it’s about unplugging and enjoying the sun.
7. There’s also plenty to see and do in Cozumel aside from the beach. The city of San Miguel has a laid-back vibe, and there are stunning stretches of untouched nature to be found along the eastern and southern shores.
Getting to Cozumel
The best way to get from Cancun to Cozumel is with the ADO bus from the Airport to Playa del Carmen and then take the Cozumel Ferry. This is because the bus ride is only about 1 hour long and it is a much nicer way to travel. The ferry for Cozumel runs every 60 minutes, and it is very inexpensive. You can buy your ticket at the ferry terminal.
Some notes about the ferry to Cozumel from Playa del Carmen:
1. You can take your bike on the ferry no problem for no extra charge, they will direct you to a different entrance on the ground floor so you don’t have to get up the escalator with your bike! 2. It’s the same if you have a lot of luggage or are in a wheelchair. 3. You just go under the escalator and enter from there. 4. I always sit indoors in the a/c rather than outside, but that’s because I’m not a tourist and it’s not so exciting for me anymore.

When To Visit Cozumel
The tropical climate in Cozumel is quite predictable and easy to make plans around. Without much of a temperature difference throughout the year, (the average temperature lingers around 83 degrees F) it’s the rainy hurricane season that most travelers need to pay attention to.
January – April
Peak season. Perfect weather-wise, but sees the highest influx of tourists. If you are not a people person this is something to consider.
May–October
The hottest and most rainy months of the year, but still plenty of sunshine and fantastic warm water for snorkeling & diving. Also, the hurricane season peaks in September and October, so monitor the forecasts and get travel insurance just in case. Fewer tourists mean you can expect lower rates at hotels, resorts, and tour companies during this time.
November–December
Many consider the autumn-winter months to be the best times to visit Cozumel. The hurricane season has passed by this time and the humidity is low. Can be a little “chilly” in the evenings sometimes though.
What Is There to Do in Cozumel?
Cozumel is Mexico’s premier diving destination, so if you would like to explore the marine life of the Mesoamerican Reef, this is the ideal place to do it. There are great options for both scuba diving and snorkeling. Cozumel’s beaches are great for a relaxing afternoon. You can also visit San Gervasio archaeological site, wander through the botanical gardens at Chankanaab Park, or go shopping in the island’s principal town of San Miguel.

Where to Exchange Money in Cozumel Mexico
Tumblr media
People coming on vacation to Cozumel ask what type of currency is best to have for spending. Can you use US Dollars in Cozumel? Do I need to exchange money? Is it better to use pesos or dollars in Cozumel? We will break it down for you here so you can travel like a pro and get the most for your money.
Are US Dollars accepted in Cozumel?
The answer is yes, but not everywhere. For most tourists that are in Mexico for a week and will be in tourist areas, you will find most places to accept US Dollars. But there is the rate at which they will accept them.
We take US Dollars but at a cost
One very important thing you need to be alert to the rate at which people accept dollars. You might think, “Great, they take dollars!” but only to figure out it is at a lower rate than what the exchange is. Any business can decide to accept a non-official currency and they can set the rate at which they will exchange it. Most of the time their rate will be a couple of pesos less than the official rate, and you will pay 15-20% more for things. If you are going to be shopping around, it can add up. This is a “convenience fee” for not exchanging your money yourself. For this reason, we recommend people exchange money and use pesos. You will get the best prices. It might be a little confusing handling a new currency, but just take your time and figure it out when making a purchase.
The bottom line for how to pay in Cozumel
The bottom line is, they accept pesos everywhere in Cozumel! We know it can be a hassle to figure out additional money and do the calculations in your head. This is just part of traveling, and it is also more respectful to countries to use the national currency. Many Mexicans make it easy-to-use dollars and this makes it easier for many tourists that come to Mexico. You will, however, make the best use of your money if you exchange it and use pesos.
Where can I exchange currency in Cozumel?
If you find yourself in need of exchanging currency, then there are plenty of places in Cozumel where you can do this. You can exchange money at a money exchange shop. The rates will vary, as will the commission, so take your time to shop around a little for this. If you want to use an ATM, then stick to using an ATM attached to a bank. They will also tell you the exchange rate so you know what you are getting. Often, this exchange rate is better than what you would get exchanging cash.

Finding a Job or a Business in Cozumel
Tumblr media
Work Visa To get a job in Cozumel, you will need a work visa (not a tourist visa). A tourist visa is good for a finite amount of days, depending on what the customs agent puts down. From the day you arrive on your tourist visa, you will have between 7 to 180 days to vacate the country. However, even with this tourist visa, you may not work for a Cozumel company. Mexico grants work visas to companies that need a specific person, but cannot find them amongst Cozumel’s population. You may not work unless you have a business that will hire you and go through the lengthy process. Very few foreigners can get jobs in Cozumel. Please do not think you can just pick up a job under the table in Cozumel. Immigration often checks businesses that often employ people that might be foreigners. Cozumel Mexico is much more regulated, and it is not worth getting deported. 📷 Working Online Working online takes a lot of sorting through the options. The best thing about working online is that you do not have to deal with the long immigration process, or dealing with the many types of jobs. You just pick what you want to do and you do it. It is like playing the lottery, but instead of picking a number, you pick a job. There are plenty of jobs to choose from, but it takes a lot of work to find the best ones. There are many websites that you can use to find jobs. People searching can use sites like Upwork, Fiverr, and Freelancer. You can also check local sites that have jobs listed on them. You just have to search around a bit. Search for things like SEO, Social Media Marketing, Content Writing, Virtual Assistant, Blogging, and so on. Once you find a job that you are interested in, you will need to send them a message. They will ask you a lot of questions, and if you are qualified, they will hire you.
Opening a business in Cozumel Many people have dreams of moving abroad to start a new phase of life. You may have saved up a little stockpile of money and want to work some in retirement years or move to work while still young. We’re not going to talk about the legal paperwork and governmental requirements for any business. This is best discussed with a lawyer and the appropriate office at city hall.
Drawbacks of opening a business in Cozumel Can we help you with factors to avoid? Here are a few tips that will help you stay ahead of the game.1. Most businesses don’t generate profits in their first year. Inventory costs and a lot of paperwork can cause a business to lose money in the first year, but that doesn’t mean it can’t succeed. Think long-term instead of short-term if you want to succeed.2. Don’t open a business just to cater to just ex-pats and tourists. It is a small and finite market (20 percent) compared to the overall population. So you have already eliminated 80% of the market.3.  Understanding the low and high seasons of any business, like a restaurant, that depends on tourism is vital to keep the business afloat during the off-season. If locals stop coming, then the restaurant will die. Many people will tell you it is the locals that carry you through the low seasons.4. You need to have extra capital. You’ll blaze through your money and without a cushion,  you may lose your investment money. It’s a shame when we see a new business open and then close within a year.5. Buying and selling a business is not necessarily a simple process. You’ll need to carefully examine the financial situation of the business, make sure that all of the necessary paperwork is in place, and that the purchase agreement has been negotiated to your satisfaction. Each owner prefers to custom design their company. But if the owner wants to keep the business running smoothly, they may need to work with the existing business model and adapt it to fit their own style and needs.
