interestingly, there were two skim/skip-rights-invokes and NEITHER of them were the 45k word fic. in fact, the longest fic from this set is my first recommendation!

light up the day by harpydora - Cass/AuDy post-finale fix-it, that i just blazed through. i really liked how AuDy was portrayed in this, their desires, their affect, and their general (horrible tbh) approach to the developing relationship was what really sold me on it

I also really enjoyed harboring by akitania (spacehairdresser) for its short expansion on Signet's canonical patronage of sex workers, and expressed preferences

my heart has left its cage by growlery writes (growlery) - technically a coffee shop au (more like canon divergent, coffee shop au adjacent?) of Tea and Natalya from counter/weight. i really liked this, especially given that its focused on characters i'm not really invested in

Bitter Heat by homsantoft (tofla) - Samot/Ephrim dom/sub smut. it's been a couple days so its not as clear in my mind but i really liked the Samot characterization in it

you will notice that these recommendations are out of order from how i read them. this is because i have a cold and so thinking is already hard enough so cut my some slack

A Lady-in-Waiting my possess the proper ettiquette expected of a civilized court, and be versed in multiple languages. Of course, Gallian is essential for any proper lady, but she should also speak Akitanian and of course, Old Imperial goes without saying. A Lady should avoid the impolite and incomplete slang of the peasantry.

A Lady must be skilled in dancing, (but refrain from the godless frenzy of the heathens in the Mistlands.)

She must be able to ride a horse (side saddle of course.)

She must be skilled and knowledgeable of music to delight and sooth her ladyship (Sacred music, of course), embroidery and painting.

A Lady-In-Waiting is her Ladyship's Social Secretary. She must act as confident and overseer of all interactions with wellwishers and suitors, and must be knowledgeable of the personages and activities of court. She is read her Ladyship her correspondence, take dictation and discretely relay messaged. She is to maintain her Ladyship's rooms and wardrobe, and oversee lower staff...

All in all, a Lady-in-Waiting must be the paramount of feminine expectations in the Court.

Antoinette's Qualifications

I can speak Gallian and Brezhoneg fluently. I also know a ton of Fomorian curse words and can order a loaf of bread in Akitanian. As Albert taught me "Ez dut disko hau erosiko, urratuta dago!"

Dancing! Oh I love dancing! There's some really good ones from the interior of Letha. I learned about them from a Perfect of all people. He listed a bunch of dances. I missed the end of his sermon, but I'm sure he went on to praise them all, because they are very fun!

Oh I love horses! I have a pony, Roussin. He like apples! Do you have a horse?

Oh, I love music! Albert sang the funniest song called "Les Demoiselles de Montsang." But Enora told him me I'm not allowed to sing that in public anymore after what happened at the Duchess du Berry's party.

Reading: A lady-in-waiting must maintain her mistress's social calendar with poise and grace, as befitting a lady of the court. A lady must gracefully deflect and redirect those with ill intent.... Oh, I do that! I will defend Lady Enora from any who try to get past me! I showed that creep from Artois! Gave him a bloody nose and everything! I'm pretty good at that part!

Its weird that for all the flowery language about grace and demure sociability, Lady DeBussy really thinks a lady's job is about collecting gossip. I think that's more Fadlan's job, but he calls himself a "spymaster."

As you can see, I, Antoinette Beaumoulin, am a perfect example of the modern lady-in-waiting. And, as Albert says they say in Akitania: Nire hovercraft aingiraz beteta dago!

i know this is in re: a caption on a super old post but i was going through your bcs tag and. CAN i ask about your needlessly elaborate pokemon au.

slippin' jimmy made beer money selling fake slowpoke tails and conning trainers he found in bars into fighting 1-on-1 battles against his F.E.A.R. rattata. after getting virtual badges from the university of the orange islands ("an online gym -- what a joke!"), he graduated to being a (mostly) legitimate trainer who is a complete headache to fight against. lots of stall techniques and gimmicks. his signature pokemon are a wobbuffet with shadow tag and a moody bidoof because, like, if you don't know those are banned you're basically scamming yourself.

chuck, unlike jimmy, went the proper trainer route. chuck was one of those kids who got a starter pokemon from a local professor at age 12, collected a few dozen badges, maybe fought a rocket member or two to prove his mettle. years of experience and an encyclopedic knowledge of strategy have turned him into *the* most insufferable smogon type. chuck would have a solid, well-balanced team of OU pokes, but also be able to throw in some more obscure strategies to show off. i think he'd keep an old blastoise around as a mascot of sorts -- y'know, something respectable that proves how experienced he is. and, uh, is weak to electricity. (maybe it knows mud sport?)

krokorobin had a really great pokemon crossover he posted a while back as well. a lot of the other ideas i had were pretty similar to his: i think i gave kim a pidgeot instead of a swanna, and howard a poorly-trained salamence instead of a metagross, but the idea of playing off of class was the same. same goes for the cartel plotline characters; there's just a smaller subset of pokemon to choose from that are associated with police and organized crime. whatever i had picked for nacho wasn’t as perfect as that houndour!

I feel pretty confident in saying that if you listened to TMA you would be most invested in the shameless backstory polycule that has swallowed the plot and suspended the present-day protags in its juices, so this is just... faster delivery

have you read any good non-school books recently?

i just reread most of “emperor of all maladies” and still like it a lot––i think it’s a pretty good history + science mixture, & i think it’s a pretty effective treatment of a large scope. it has, you know, pop sci limitations, and also is about cancer so uh. depressing? but i’m not mad at it and it’s worth reading. i particularly like it as an introduction to the effort to identify cigarettes as a cause of cancer

i’m also going very slowly thru “annals of the former world” and my main impression of it is that my interest is directly proportional to how biology-related it is, but that’s because i’m enjoying it and just more into bio than geology, not because it’s doing something wrong

@akitania​ @electroncloudscatteredaround​ and I came up with the idea that our lovely birbs liked playing around abandonned cities, and kinda fuelled ghost stories. So, what if the birdmen sightings were thought of ghosts sightings?

@electroncloudscatteredaround did the wonderful linear with the main flock and I did the their ghost forms. @akitania wrote a wonderful fic based on the theme.
