These are the references that we sent to Stes before we commissioned her. We just thought it was neat to share <3

For the general silhouette and cut of the clothes, we had references of paintings & sculptures from the Southern-Northern Dynasty and early Sui Dynasty. The clothing patterns are inspired by the characters’ names (waves from Gu Hengbo’s “bo” and clouds from Yuan Zixiao’s “xiao”).

Gu Hengbo’s hairstyle is taken directly from the novel, described as a high bun held up with strings of jade beads; Yuan Zixao’s hairstyle is a simple period-appropriate topknot that allows for easy maintenance during travels. 

Gu Hengbo’s sword, Tian Wei Shei Chun, is based on a replica of a sword forged in the 6th century; the charm on the sword hilt is a traditional Chinese bow that we decided is made by Yuan Ying for his shimei.

Yuan Zixiao’s fingertips are stained with ink due to her role as an archivist; the water and cloud motifs in the background are inspired by illustrations from the Shan Hai Jing, emphasizing the distance and yearning between the two characters

i know how new zealand culture is embedded in the locked tomb and muir even fought for it to stay in the series, but i would love to see someone draw harrow in filipiniana-style outfits. i see so many renditions of harrow in flouncy petticoats and really baroque goth outfits that are vaguely european and i love them but i keep thinking of @alamangoes' drawing of two women in filipiniana, one wearing a terno whose structured butterfly sleeved bolero shields her bare ribcage, and another wearing a dark barong whose curved spine and angled pelvis are embroidered on the back of her shirt. And then, of course, her drawing of a woman who hides her knives under her wide butterfly sleeves and imagining harrow's butterfly sleeves themselves made of bones like this caged beauty. And I can definitely see people going crazy for the layers and drama of the translucent baro't saya, with their flowing shirts resting under the beautiful and stiff shield of their panuelo.

RESEARCH: ARTIST INSPIRATION

I've followed this artist for years and their skill and improvement has been incredibly impressive. I like their stylisation of faces and how it's a good blend of vaguely realistic cartoonishness. I don't like the flat repetitive boring anime art style since it doesn't really allow for as much diversity in character design in most cases and isn't unique; I see it everywhere. Their understanding of lighting and colour is outstanding in every piece, and their animations are fluid and impressively detailed. I feel like this would be a good style to reference for my own project as a fantasy world doesn't fit a realistic style not that I think I could even pull one off, nor a glittery anime art style that wouldn't be able to fully portray the gritty world I intend to create.
