From Delhi we flew to the town Kochin in Kerala state. It was a 5am flight and we’d only gotten a couple hours of sleep in the airport before boarding, so most of the day we were pretty tired. While leaving the airport we met a tourist named Taiki from Nagoya. Initially he wanted to share a taxi with us into town, but we ended up all going together directly to the train station and catching a train to Alappuza (also called Alleppey). We had a tasty South Indian lunch, which had more rice and less chapati compared with north India. The stand out dish was malai kofta. The dumplings were shaped like a mortar and pestle and the sauce was think, rich, and perfectly spiced.

Allepy or Allapuzha in Kerala state of India is a good place to visit as a tourist.
Allepy has backwater as the main tourist attraction. Hiring a boat and going on a days ride on backwaters is really enjoyable. Vembanad lake and Arabian Sea meet at Alappuza.
There are many rivers, beaches, hill stations, forests, mountains, valleys etc…

Friday 7 December
I arrived at the Thomas Homestay in Alappuza (locals call the place Aleppy). With a name like mine how could I stay anywhere else? Just as I got here 3 of the others were leaving to go on an over night house boat trip and asked if I could join them. So I said sure and off we went. Vladimir is 62, and was an executive with an international company in Germany, when he said he suddenly got the. Urge to see the world, so he quit his job and came to India. Antonia and Carlotta had just graduated from high school in Germany, and were traveling before university. Aleppy has hundreds of miles of canals and is famous for cruises on various types of boats. Ours was small, it only held the 4 of us and the 2. Crew members. What an experience! Slowly cruising through a tropical paradise with calm waters and cool breezes. Eating wonderful meals prepared for us. That evening, we tied up in a remote area and Vladmir played "Oldies but goodies" on a boom box that was on board. Everything from EmiLou Harris, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Beatles, CCR, Doris Day, Leonard Cohen, Elvis, and on and on. What a trip down memory lane! To my absolute amazement the girls knew the words to all the songs. Carlotta told us her 92 year old grandmother is a Johnny Cash fan. So we all enjoyed the music in a truly magical setting and I actually stayed up until after midnight, something that doesn't happen very often.

Kerala to host literary festival with ‘Tolerance’ as theme
At a time when the country witnesses raging debate over intolerance, Kerala is getting ready to host a literary festival with tolerance as the core theme. Creative writers, journalists, theatre and film personalities will deliberate on tolerance at the fifth edition of South India Writers Ensemble (SIWE), to be held at Chengannur, a sleepy town in coastal Alappuza district, from July 24. Organised by People for Performing Arts and More, an art-cum-cultural outfit, the three-day annual literary gathering is aimed at bringing about an enriching interaction between writers from different languages and regions. Noted Malayalam writer and director of the festival T R Rajeevan said every language has its own style of expression and the objective of SIWE is to explore the power of language and literature through the gathering of writers. ‘Being a part of human sensibility, tolerance is an age old, much cliched subject. But, in the present socio-political scenario, there is a need to discuss and ponder upon this topic. It is time to observe and acknowledge the changing perspectives,‘ the writer said. A new Post is now live on http://www.minisuitcase.co.uk/alleppey-alappuza-and-fort-kochi-cochin/
Alleppey (Alappuza) and Fort Kochi (Cochin)
Alleppey This is now from memory as I am now playing catch up with the blog posts. We have had very little access, if any, to wifi so although I am writing this now I don't know when it will be published. We spent two nights in Alleppey (Alluppuzha) which was plenty.  It seemed to be a place really worth going before we got there, described as 'the Venice of India' by one guide, but there was really nothing there but overpriced house boat trips and two very dirty canals.  On arrival we sought out a rickshaw which there were fewer of t ...
