Going to try something new for me: spend my evenings trying to draw/paint that which is hard/which I am awful at and just keep plugging at it until I have no more to learn from it. I LOVE the realistic painterly worlds lots of artists do but it is NOT my forte. How'd I learn as a kid? Well...I sucked. A lot. And kept drawing anyway.
So. I'm 36 and going to spend my evenings seeing if I can't learn to do this very thing. The likes of Allison Theus, Caraid, Alector Fencer, and Nambroth (Among many more) have filled my imagination for 15-20 years. Deep brain imprints. If I want to draw and paint that way too I'm just going to have to practice it. Time will pass by either way and not everything needs to wow people. I'm going to screw it up and make mistakes and things will look weird at first. But if I learned to do everything else up to this point...why not painterly realism? It is never too late to learn unless you've had something egregiously bad happen like an enraged gorilla pulled your limbs off or you happen to be dead. Um sorry about either of those if they've happened to you. I don't tick those boxes though so I better get to work.

What art program and brushes do you use? I absolutely LOVE the texture of your line art, but am having trouble finding brushes that have that effect. Thanks i'll advance!
Heya! Thank you a ton! I use Photoshop for 2D stuff, even though I'm trying to get away from it but so far I found no other program that fits to my work flow as well as it. For 3D I use Blender and Zbrush, but I guess no one really sees all my 3D mockups and references haha. They do exist tho! For backgrounds and objects like swords or guns.
Tumblr media
Here's a little overview of my brushes, at least the ones I use the most. I actually don't consider myself someone who does lineart. It feels so crackly and rough, and I never really do lines with the intention of uh, using them. I mostly paint and render and then draw lines on top of that, which I then overpaint, then draw again, etc etc. Rinse and repeat. Until I end up liking what I see. I use brushes with colour jitter literally everywhere. Blue and yellow in the sheet above. The dark green one between them is some brush I picked up from Luke Mancinis deviantart page almost a decade ago and I never stopped using it. The teal one next to yellow is just a normal hard roundbrush. Red, purple, light green and orange are just additional brushes I use a lot, but 99% of my work is done with the ones in the top row. "Plants - Devin" are the foliage brushes from Devin Elle Kurtz which are really awesome to block in foliage really quick.
Tumblr media
And here's a little close up in how I use some of them. A millenia ago in internet time recording I read on Alector Fencer's deviantart page that using less brushes and getting used to them is much better than overusing a hundred and never really getting the hang of them. Use what feels most natural to you and your work flow, don't be afraid to experiment and try out new stuff every once in a while. For example, the round brush with colour jitter was made by myself because I was so frustrated in not finding anything that gives me a nice and quick texture while also being clean to work with.

“Shadows of a Dream” by AlectorFencer: http://bit.ly/2wo1vih
The sense of danger delivered in this piece transcends the subject, evoking a feeling of anxiety and fear in the viewer.

Quote
In my experience, everyone will say they want to discover the Truth, right up until they realize that the Truth will rob them of their deepest held ideas, beliefs, hopes, and dreams. The freedom of enlightenment means much more than the experience of love and peace. It means discovering a Truth that will turn your view of self and life upside-down. For one who is truly ready, this will be unimaginably liberating. But for one who is still clinging in any way, this will be extremely challenging indeed. How does one know if they are ready? One is ready when they are willing to be absolutely consumed, when they are willing to be fuel for a fire without end.

The Runeslayer - WoW Combat Follower
Tumblr media
((Tryndan has been in flux over the past two or three months, growing as a character while re-learning who he is thanks to @kyuusei-shadowleaf ‘s healing and @inkedwolf-compendium ‘s patience. As he’s very much in the process of becoming, I’m modeling this after the more unstable ‘Jeckyll and Hyde’ creature he once was))
How your character acts as an in-game follower!
Class: Runemaster ((WoW RPG)) ...basically an Arcane Windwalker Subtlety Rogue. Yeah I know, bear with me, I get it… he has some of the strengths of each, but more weaknesses than any. Godmode is for toy dinosaurs; being a leaf on the wind will humble you quickly. He uses Ley energy, but is not truly equipped to handle it. Moves and hits like a Windwalker, but only so long as he can channel that Ley before being weakened by the effort. Subtlety is basically what he was as a Rebel before joining Crowley’s resistance in the GLO, along with the physical benefits of his innate Worgen curse… yet if he has to fall back on that, he’s beyond exhausted, and more wolf than man.
Selection: “Make them pay. One by one… they’ll -all- pay.”
Weapons: Rune-inscribed claws and fangs, maked with sigils of leyline power. His body, as well, is carved with an assortment of runes to enhance their effects. He has no idea how to wield the Arcane itself, but the sigils of power are like magnets to which Ley energy is drawn.
AI Behavior: Remains in stealth at the start of combat, targeting spellcasters. Attempts one-shot stunlocks on unshielded magic users. Hobbles Light-Wielders in larger melees, distracting or disabling them from benefitting their companions. Funnels magical attacks towards others (has little control over this, could be friend, foe or reflected back at the initial caster, assuming it’s not harmlessly shunted off). Occasionally berserks when arcane energy is spent.
Battle Lines:
*worldess, almost sub-vocalized growling* - stealthing at the start of combat, so low it seems to come from all around. - Shadowstep
*sudden silence, so pregnant a pause it cuts through any ambient sound* - funneling Leyline energy through one or more of the runes carved into claw, fang or flesh, empowering his attack  - Symbols of Death
*growling intensifies, like a bear about to give it to Leo DiCaprio in the woods* - the calm before the storm, energy about to be unleashed in an ambush - Shadowstrike
*snarling* - locked in combat, opponent can’t drop out. - Shadow Dance
*hnnf* - the sound your dog makes when he’s got something in his nose that could easily be solved by sneezing but instead attempts to reverse-snort out whatever it is, before finally just sneezing like he should have in the first place - taking damage
*high-pitched yelp of guilt-inducing doom* - the sound your dog makes when you accidentally step on his paw because he’s always underfoot in the kitchen and you never forget that sound because it’s the worst sound in the world and you would rather stub your toe on a barbed wire barricade a thousand times over rather than hear it once more* - taking damage once he’s exhausted himself blowing out his arcane wad
Cooldowns:
*Worgen Howl* - Fist (and fangs and claws) of Fury - Windwalker Monk ability fueled by the Ley being channeled through his scars. Lasts full turn and robs opponent of theirs, single target only, cannot be interrupted, can only be used once per fight. Deals damage equal to 50% of opponent’s remaining health, can only be used at max combo points. Leaves him almost as wrecked as his opponent, drains all combo points/energy/ley, cannot cast offensive abilities until after he’s dropped combat with another CD, and has energy/ley capped at 50 for remaining duration of fight afterwards. Cap cannot be reset while opponent lives, unless both sides exit combat.
*bamf!* - Blink - Can travel along the leylines, teleporting 15 yards once per fight, but uses up an entire turn and lowers all defense/resist by half for next turn. Similar to Shadowstep but used defensively; can be cast during stealth but reveals upon destination.
*heavy, outwards blast of breath. it sounded like he just said ‘whoosh.’ did he fucking really?!?* Cloak of Shadows - Removes DoT’s and makes untargetable for one turn, dropping combat. Once per fight, cannot cast anything else that turn. Clears all combo points on opponent.
*unintelligible rumbling. almost sounds like ‘noseeums,’ but obviously that’s not a word. is it?* Vanish - Drops combat and breaks roots, places in stealth. Can be revealed by DoT’s or AoE on next turn. Once per fight, regen energy/ley at 2x speed for 2 turns or until revealed.
Exiting Battle:
*the slurping, biting, crunching sounds your dog makes when you give him a fresh bone full of marrow*
*something that sounds like a boyscout, a pocket knife and a bone being whittled, if said bone were still attached to flesh and perhaps the victim was still alive. also, wtf boyscouts, jesus. this is -not- your grandad’s pine tar derby*
*the hiss of a brand as he sears the runes back into his flesh*
KO’d:
*remember that sound your dog made when you stepped on his paw by mistake from earlier? yeah, that, but followed by a gurgling death rattle that wants to be a snarl but no longer has the strength*
 “...Tryn… sorry… Tryn… fail…”
“You will bring… own doom…” - only spoken in whispers when falling to magic wielders.
Rezzed:
*a series of bones popping, as he rolls his shoulders and cracks his neck*
*static crackling of energy as he draws on the Ley*
 “Tryndan weak… face Slayer now…”

Cù-Sìth [Scottish mythology; Celtic mythology]
The Cù-Sìth, plural Coin-Shìth, is a mythological creature from Scottish folklore. They are supernatural dogs that make their homes in clefts of rocks. They are described as large dogs, about the size of a cow, with black fur, although later depictions favored green fur. They are known to roam areas with lakes and are generally depicted as malicious creatures. A Cù-Sìth makes its presence known by barking loudly for three times, and these barks are loud enough to be heard across several kilometers. If you hear it bark three times, it will overtake you and there is no escape.
One story involves a man who was traveling in Tiree and found a particularly large pitch-black dog. The creature did not notice him and he fled, but he returned the next morning and saw paw prints the size of a human hand. Tiree, in particular, is the origin of several stories about the Cù-Sìth. One woman claimed to have heard the supernatural grumbling of a fairy dog here. In truth, she may have heard the beach of Tiree: this large beach plain is known for its roundish rocks, which make loud rumbling noises when the tide is high enough to move the stones. She may have mistook this for the barking of a monster.
Another location in Tiree, Shiadar fort near Heynish Hill, featured a story where two young boys slept near the cows in the byre. They did this to care for the animals, as the dwelling-house was far away from the barn. One night, a supernatural voice came out of nowhere to warn the mother of the boys. It said that the two best calves in the barn were both dead. The mother ran out of the house and found a dead cow, so she ran towards the byre and found her sons, shivering from fear and almost scared to death. They both claimed to have heard fairy dogs on the roof of the byre.
And no, despite the name, Coin-Shìth are not capable of shitting coins.

“I have loved in life and I have been loved. I have drunk the bowl of poison from the hands of love as nectar, and have been raised above life's joy and sorrow. My heart, aflame in love, set afire every heart that came in touch with it. My heart has been rent and joined again; My heart has been broken and again made whole; My heart has been wounded and healed again; A thousand deaths my heart has died, and thanks be to love, it lives yet. I went through hell and saw there love's raging fire, and I entered heaven illumined with the light of love. I wept in love and made all weep with me; I mourned in love and pierced the hearts of men; And when my fiery glance fell on the rocks, the rocks burst forth as volcanoes. The whole world sank in the flood caused by my one tear; With my deep sigh the earth trembled, and when I cried aloud the name of my beloved, I shook the throne of God in heaven. I bowed my head low in humility, and on my knees I begged of love, "Disclose to me, I pray thee, O love, thy secret." She took me gently by my arms and lifted me above the earth, and spoke softly in my ear, "My dear one, thou thyself art love, art lover, and thyself art the beloved whom thou hast adored..." ~ Hazrat Inayat Khan (The Dance of the Soul) [Thanks to Enlightening Oblivion]
