Quarterly Writing Goals Jan-March Update!
Hey friends! Another quarter down, time to update what goals I did and didn't accomplish. If you don’t know how these go, I set a few goals to accomplish (All are more manageable pieces of my overarching 2022 goals which can be found here) every three months and at the end of those three months, I update this post to see what I did, (and more often) what I did not accomplish.
1. Finish beta read-ing a novel for one of my critique partners. It’s a YA fantasy and I have about 100 pages left!
Done! I finished this in January, the same week I posted the quaterly goals. Coincendentally, this author now has an agent for this book so that's super awesome!!! She had gone through betas and revisions months before I read and was actively querying already so it wasn't like my reading had anything to do with her success in acquiring an agent, I was reading it for funsies, but I'm still so proud of her!
2. Read my book’s club book of the month. So technically there will be 3 books in this singular goal since this is a quarterly goal but currently, our January pick is The Girls I’ve Been by Tess Sharpe.
Did this in January, hated the book haha. I didn't read our Feburary pick so this goal is partially fulfilled and our March read actually got moved to April.
3. Read Story Genius by Lisa Cron. It’s a craft book, I just like to brush up on some skills so might as well.
Done! I did this in February. So freaking helpful but the author goes on tangents, I recommend reading after page 100 because the first 100 pages are literally so irrelevant and full of personal anecdotes. This book is heavy on character development so if your story is character-driven, I highly recommend it. I usually get a complete sense of characters AFTER the first draft which is good but a pain because then I have to insert their voice more clearly in the second draft but with this book, I knew the motivations and how the characters impacted the plot right away.
4. Outline Heavy is the Crown. This is my YA historical fiction retelling about 2 twins who masquerade as one person–the princess’ guard–in order to kill the Queen and reclaim their rightful throne.
Done, did this after reading Story Genius in Feburary.
5. Draft Heavy is the Crown. That being said, I don’t think I’ll finish the draft in three months, I think I’ll finish it in April so that’d be next quarter but for now this goal is just requiring me to at least start on it.
I'm half laughing at this one lmao, did I think I could write consistently for three months straight lmaoo. But I consider this one completed, I wrote the first 10,000 words in feburary/march. It's currently April 2nd and I have 11,676 words.
I think this is the first month where all my goals have been accomplished (more or less) so yay! I think making them attainable has really helped. Thanks for reading, my quaterly goals for April-June are coming up soon!

WIP Cameo Reblog game!
@alextriestowritestuff came up with this SUPER CUTE GAME that I found via @incandescent-creativity! The post was getting kind of long so I’ve copied and pasted their text here:
Hi friends! Quarantine has been a lonely time for me personally so I decided to start a little reblog game-I’m going to tag people simply for visibility but ideally if you see this post, you can just reblog and answer. How it works: there’s a prompt and you answer it with your WIPs (link them if applicable) and reblog!
Here it goes: Congrats! Your book has been adapted into a movie or show! What background character are you going to play for your cameo? Also what visual medium would best suit your book?
That Boy, That Girl: I think this would be really cute and engaging in the Lizzie McGuire style, live action with a little cartoon Kandi when she gets into her head. I’d be a random person at the bake sale!
And All the Devils Are Here: Something like Into the Spiderverse, super dynamic animation in comic style, only in black, white, and red. I’d be a body in Vilmos’s funeral home.
In the Lion’s Teeth: I think this would be cool as live action that’s been rotoscoped over like Waking Life, BUT with added animations in the frame to emphasize Pascal’s hallucinations and stress, but not like. The exact thing. Like, JUST gnashing teeth on one side, or a great big ^%$#! over his head when he gets scared. I’d be the awkward barista. :)
I’m gonna tag @perringwrites @rwwriter @lynnafred @roselinproductions because I’m especially curious! :D  but everyone should do this

Last Line Tag!
Hey! So I was tagged by these amazing people: @elonanwrites @alextriestowritestuff @carrotgirl-weeb @sunflowersfor-amy and @creatinmaven !!! I already did this and haven't had time to write anymore since (😭) so I thought I'd just provide you with a nice length excerpt! This is from TSA, my wip about spies, and this is how Carol met her friends 😄
~~~
When she had initially received the scholarship, she hadn’t expected anything extraordinary to come from it. Sure, the fact that spies were real was unexpected, but it would still just be another school that she would inevitably get kicked out of for her impudent attitude. Another school filled with teachers that droned on about things she already knew and another grade full of idiots who took pleasure in attempting to degrade her confidence. It would just be another building of people whose IQs didn’t even come close to surpassing hers.
How wrong she was.
It was the first time since she was four years old that she was confronted by questions she didn’t know the answer to. She had never heard of the first spy to create a school, she had never studied how to defuse bombs, and she had never cared for Physical Education so she had trouble with combat training. For anyone else, the whole year would have been a disaster. Nevertheless, thanks to her IQ of 160, she was able to cram ten years of information into her brain in only one week. However, despite her swift adaption to the world of espionage, she wasn’t exactly welcomed with open arms.
“And where do you think you’re going?"
Carol looked up at the boy who had spoken (whom she would later learn was named Zachary Layton). He was tall and gangly, with black hair, and acne covering half of his face. His appearance was completed by a glare. A posse of glaring students emerged from behind him, all slowly surrounding Carol.
“To class,” Carol said matter-of-factly.
“I think you’re in the wrong place.”
Carol looked very unimpressed. “I may be new, but I’m not stupid.”
“You aren’t meant to be here,” the boy spat. “You’re a Normo.”
“A what?” Carol asked with a laugh. The boy only glared more. “What is that, the spy version of a Muggle?”
“Your kind is not welcome here,” he said, shoving her backwards. She looked rather affronted after being assaulted, both physically and verbally, for no rational reason. He continued to force her backwards harshly. “You’re not a spy. You got in on a scholarship. You don’t belong here and never will. You’re a Normo. Normos are not meant to be exposed to the concept of secret agents. No matter what Miss Hope thinks of you, you will never be accepted. You will never be appreciated. You will never be a spy.”
Carol raised her eyebrows in impassive surprise. “Wow. Rude.” She squeezed past the students who surrounded her as they all glared. “Not exactly the welcoming party I was expecting, but I’ve never been liked before, so why should anything change at the first school that’s wanted me here?” She entered the classroom, ignoring how the rest of the teenagers filed in behind her. “Also, boy-whose-name-he-never-gave, I am able to fully one hundred percent guarantee that I will be a better spy than you.”
“What makes you think that, you scum?” A different boy had spoken this time, and Carol simply looked at him boredly.
“Wow, very creative insult. Truly, I’m hurt by your words,” Carol said, her sarcasm remarkably evident. “But, if you must know, I am a literal genius, with an IQ higher than you can count—although you bunch seem like you couldn’t get past ten without trouble.”
There was a small snicker from the back of the room and every one of the bullies’ eyes widened in horror. Carol turned to see two more students sitting in the back of the classroom; the boy, looking at her with an impressed smirk, and the girl, looking at her nails stoically. The boy had side-swept black hair and warm brown eyes, while the girl had a messy blonde bun perched atop her head with eyes of icy blue—they were a perfect yin and yang. She watched as the boy gestured for her to come sit with them. No hesitation was needed for Carol to make her decision.
“Another genius at school,” the boy said. “It must be Christmas.” Carol’s eyes widened in surprise and hope. The boy was still grinning widely. “We’re both geniuses too.”
Carol felt her heart soar.
“I’m Gideon Zones,” he said, “and this one,” he thumbed at the girl next to him, “is Moira Lake.” Moira barely glanced at Carol, but nodded curtly. “Don’t take her aloof personality seriously, she’ll come around,” Gideon said with a laugh. “Hey, do you want some of my shrimp chips?”
Carol smiled in awe, feeling like maybe, just maybe, she was finally home.
First Three Lines Tag :)
I was tagged (a while ago, sorry!!) by @lady-redshield-writes and @toboldlywrite, thanks lovelies! <3
These are the first three lines of Eosophobia’s third scene :)
Jackal stares down at the glass, opalescent and cracking, that has been placed in front of him.  He lifts it and gives it a swirl, watching the runny copper drink swirl against the glass. He gives it a sniff--rubbing alcohol and gasoline and fucking fire, burning deep between his eyes-- and Viktor gives him a look, the same look Aardwolf used to give him followed by don't play with your damn food.
You can find my other first line tags here :D
Tagging (feel free to ignore): @alextriestowritestuff @thewingwriter @jade-island-lives and, of course, anyone else who like to join in!
Hi Jillian! Wanted to ask numero 44 : How do you decide what story idea to work on? Thanks!
Hi! And ... I don’t know. I’m actually really bad at that. But I guess I choose the idea that has the ... loudest characters? Like, right now the Sisters of Hecate cast is particularly loud, so that’s gonna be my next project. I do have to finish this draft of The Songbird’s Refrain first, though :)
A lot of my characters are opposites. I have characters that are indecisive and ones that know exactly what they want, when they want it. And somehow, they get along really well.
Same!
I often create couples this way! They’re often similar enough to find each other attractive, but different enough that their relationship doesn’t become boring!
Shoving very different characters together and figuring out how they would work as a team is a lot of fun (and basically the backbone of all my WIPs tbh).
I also love really cheesy and obvious symbolism when it comes to creating opposites.
Don't if someone has already asked this but I'd like to know number 3 for the ask game: what order do you write in? front of book to back? chronological? favorite scenes first? something else?
It depends, actually! ^^ If I’m writing the story from scratch, I write front of book to back (by following an outline, of course~) Then, if I’m stuck in the editing process and I have to rewrite a scene or two? I usually write favorite scenes first– or at least, the scenes that I think/plan out more easily tend to be my focus. If.. that all makes sense? I really hope it does.. :D
Thanks for the ask! ^^
alextriestowritestuff replied to your post “Hi, since you live in Texas and there's been some pretty bad flooding,...”
eroticgropefest Glad to hear you're doing alright. I live in the DFW area so I'm not affected by it either. We're not running out of gas but unleaded is about 40 cents higher than diesel. I waited two hours for gas this week but it was really because I couldn't move out of the line to get to another station ‍️
thank you! i’m in dfw too and the stations closest to my house ran out of gas when this all started but now the main problem seems to be the lines x.x i don’t drive so i take ubers everywhere and i’ve had to pay almost double for every ride lately it’s insane
Tag: WIP Cameos
I was tagged by @stuffaboutwriting in this game a while ago, created by @alextriestowritestuff! I think it’s supposed to be a reblog game but the post was long, so I’m starting a new post. I hope that’s okay!
Rules: Congrats! Your book has been adapted into a movie or show! What background character are you going to play for your cameo? Also what visual medium would best suit your book?
Tumblr media
Indigo Wars: a show with a set number of seasons so it doesn’t get dragged out forever, i will hopefully cameo as one of the people sitting in the solarium in Edristan or in the royal court in Draiobia so i can wear PRETTY CLOTHING
Remnants: limited series, cameo as someone in Vanya’s club so i can wear a pretty dress
Open Seas: movie, i would love to cameo as someone at the first party so i can take part in all of the big dance numbers OR as a member of the pirate crew on The Allegiance (or both if the movie people are nice)
Pine Hollow: TV show, cameo as a waitress who overhears Gin and Frey talking so i get to make lots of fun “wtf” faces
Tumblr media
As you can probably tell, my main goal is to wear nice costumes.
I tag @scmalarky, @akindofmagictoo, @rhikasa, and anyone else who wants to play! As always, no pressure!
Year-End Writers Round Up: 2020
Tagged by @maraleesquill! Thank you <3
Word Count:
Oh boy. For the whole year? Oh god. Okay. I’m gonna spend a RIDICULOUS amount of time trying to figure this out but let’s see.
Alright it took about 20 mins, what I did was go through my Drive and add up all the words for the things I haven’t posted, then went to my ao3 and added up the words for everything posted in 2020 and...
260,032 words.
Roughly. There’s some mistakes in there. But. Wow.
That’s actually about 712 words a day, which I’m pretty proud of.
New Things I’ve Tried This Year:
Oh boy. Not too many things, I don’t think. I got into D&D. I’m trying surrealism in my writing, and playing around with genres and worldbuilding.
I feel like this list should be longer bc of covid but honestly I just kept on doing what I’ve been doing.
Fic I’ve Spent Most Of My Time On:
Superkids. No contest.
Fic I’ve Spent Least Of My Time On:
Oh God, take your pic from any of the aus I started. There’s plenty of ideas I just haven’t circled back around to yet.
I guess out of my current projects, probably What Do People Do After The World Ends? That one’s just been chilling
Favourite Thing I Wrote:
I feel like I should say Superkids... but I’m pretty sure it’s Panic Cord. I think I learned a lot from Panic Cord about writing for myself and no one else. I was a lot... bolder, I think.
Favourite Thing(s) I Read:
Oof. Honestly, I’m not sure what I read this year. I’m sure there’s some fanfic that really stuck with me but I just don’t know.
Writing Goals For Next Year:
Oof2. I don’t have any set goals right now? Which I know, I know, that’s the death of productivity or whatever, shut up. My mental health isn’t great and I like how I’ve been handling projects. I still try to work on something most days of the week, but I’ve embraced Shaelin’s “work on something when you’ve got the inspiration” and it’s done me well.
I know when to be strict with myself, like the countless times I almost took a break on Superkids but didn’t, and I know when to give myself a break, like when I did decide to put Superkids down for now. We’ll just see what happens.
Ideally, I’d like to get some short stories published, maybe get the first draft of one of my original novels out. And posting Superkids would be so great. I’m super super done with that book lmao.
I’m gonna do a thing where I post small bits of a scene I’m working on in little bits on this post because I’m a little restless right now and I want to share what I have even though I’m not done yet. It’s from the ‘alternate’ roommates au, in which Connor and Sawyer became roommates by chance and that’s how they met.
It’s less slice of life slowburn and more angsty slowburn, so take that as you will.
This is missing a lot of context and I haven’t actually written the thing with the party that they’ll be talking about later but this is more pressing to get out of my head for some reason. It’ll probably be a little different when I actually finish it and get it on AO3.
I’ll add content warnings at the beginning of each update.
This part just has recreational drug use. Blaze it, y’all.
(tag list: @fandomloverangel @jade-island-lives @cadewrites @asinwolves @authorarsinoe @ramblingsofabourbondrinker @the-real-rg @ishanijasmin @samueldeckerthompson @alextriestowritestuff @spirit-wizard-nerd Let me know if you want to be added!)
---
Sawyer sat sprawled out on their back on the roof.
It had been hot, so with my window open I could hear them mumbling to themself. The light from my room cast enough light to hit the puff of their hair against the backdrop of Portland at dusk. Their head was turned away from my window and into that darkness beyond the roof.
I’d been wondering where they disappeared to in the night, the times they just turned to smoke the second it turned dark. The top of a fixed ladder was evidence enough, an easy escape they could get to from their own bedroom.
I didn’t know why they didn’t just use the door, not then.
They’d been doing that less often, though, in the past couple weeks. Then again, I hadn’t really seen much of them at all in a few weeks. Since the party. Since Rachel’s birthday.
I couldn’t quite understand what they were saying, but it had that one sided sound of a phone call. No glow, though, and their arms were flung out on either side of them.
I was supposed to be doing work, focus.
I hunched back over the case study I’d been agonizing over. I still had three more to go over before class on Wednesday. I just couldn’t seem to get it to stay in my head.
I got half a page of notes for four pages of the thing before I jammed the heels of my hands into my eye sockets and stretched. There was no way I’d get much more done that night. The case studies were all I had left to do for the week and I still hand two days to do them, so it couldn’t hurt to take a break, right?
“Hey.”
I jolted hard enough to make my eyes actually hurt under the pressure. My chair rolled a little from my desk and when I opened my eyes I found Sawyer’s slightly blurry face on the other side of my window screen.
Silence sat for a second, them half in the light from my room and half in shadow and me tense and pressed into the back of my chair. They rocked back onto their heels, turned back into a looming shadow. I melted down into a puddle and my voice was a little stilted when I answered.
“Yeah?”
“Dominic left me with some weed earlier.” They held something up even though their hands were in the dark. “Wanna come out and smoke with me?”
On one hand, I didn’t think they would have reason to think I smoked. I’d never talked about it with them and I honestly didn’t know they did. On the other, they spent a lot of time with Jordan and he absolutely knew. I could also see him telling them about it.
So, that’s how I ended up on the outcropping of roof shared by our bedroom windows. The rest of the building rose up behind us, connected to others along the block, but this was our own little space for now. Unless someone took the trouble to climb that ladder, it would be just us and the ambient sound of Portland.
They messed with their phone after we passed the cheap pipe their friend loaned them back and forth a couple times. I just looked out into the city and kind of zoned out for a little bit.
“He wants to get out of student housing,” they said after a while, smoke on their breath. Nick, I assume? “I told him I’d check with you about that extra room.”
I tipped my head back and lolled it to the side rather than turning to face them like a normal person. “Y’ should be asking Kane, shouldn’t you?”
“Don’t really need to.” They shrugged and held the pipe out. I didn’t take it, though, so they reached back through their window to drop it on the sill. “I’ve been friends with the guy forever, s’far as Kane’s concerned he’s as much Dominic’s uncle as he is mine.”
“Nick’s chill.” I didn’t elaborate. I probably should have.
I lifted my head to look at the skyline again. It would probably have been more impressive if we were higher up or closer to downtown, but it was still a night view of a city. I’d lived in Portland too long to be all awed, or whatever. It was nice to just stop for a little bit.
WIP: GOOD FOR SOMETHING | OC MOODBOARDS
OC: Clayton Edward Everett
I turned and watched the man who had been working on the wreck of a tech-car in the next bay push himself out from under the body, sitting up from the creeper board, and wiped the grease from his hands on the thighs of his coveralls.
The older man was handsome in the way that looked slightly rough and unkempt around the edges. The Common way. Ashy blonde hair that looked like he ran his hands through too much, hard green eyes, and stubble that looked a little bit more than a five o’clock shadow.
He reached into the picked of his coveralls, pulling a pre-rolled cigarette, bringing it to his lips with a quirk of his eyebrow as he looked me over hesitantly.
I took a shine to him instantly.
“C, this is my older brother Clayton Everett.” Mellow introduced me to the mechanic, as the man brought an old style lighter to to his lips too.
Brother?
“Clay, this is Ciel Tanner. She’s also a mechanic - I guess.”
The man froze, forgetting he was yet to light his cigarette, his gaze zeroing back on me. His eyes seemed to jump between each of mine, taking in the tattoos as he let out a deep breath, taking the cigarette from his mouth.
There was a beat of silence.
“You any good?” Clay asked, his voice a rough grumble.
I smirked.
“I’m the best.”
A long one but a good one uwu I hope you like Clay - one of my OG ocs!
