DGC Fic Concept

AU (loosely based around that one Star Wars AU post) where Haplo is born with the ability to hear the soundtrack of the Death Gate Cycle. This is useful in the Labyrinth, because it alerts him to danger nearby and also, through experimentation, the kind of danger. The more dangerous a situation/enemy is, the more epic the music.

Dragons, obviously, have the most epic music. If they're close but far enough away, the music is low and tense, growing louder and more epic the closer Haplo gets, reaching its peak at the start of battle.

And when Haplo first enters the Death Gate, he notices its wild, chaotic, mysterious music, interspersed with some wind instruments with a light, airy feel as he is about to enter Arianus.

The music for the Kicksey-Winsey is loud and crowded, Haplo wonders at times if the machine itself is singing. He notes some motifs (without knowing the word) remembered from before entering the Death Gate, music that would become known to him as the theme of the Sartan.

Hugh's theme is dark and edgy, the essence of a very dangerous man.

Bane's melody is very light and sweet, with a few dark, tense undertones hinting at his true nature.

Alfred's theme possesses some elements from both the Death Gate's theme and the Kicksey-Winsey, which Haplo wonders about until the big reveal that Alfred is a Sartan.

The dragonship(s) have a sort of sea-shanty-esq theme.

The entire High Realm has a theme of slow, cheery music trying to be welcoming, but the discordant harmonies alert Haplo that all is not as it seems.

Etc etc etc had this idea driving home and need to get it down somewhere before I forgot about it.

I'm rewatching "Pathologic for those who will never play it" as I am wont to do and remembering how many times Bachelor is forced into killing people, and then looking at Patho AU and like. Yeah Patho AU is dark for DEATH GATE standards but I'm just laughing because that was a line I was never going to cross. Alfred doesn't even GET a gun I'm sorry. Can you even imagine???

Okay so sorry this is super random but I was just rereading Dragon Wing and I... I can't believe it took me this long to think of this, but was your version of Lya based on the Geg's statue of the Sartan?? Cos... they both wear those hoods... and are associated with the Kicksey-Winsey... I can't believe I only just made that connection....

Oh gosh, I made Lya a while ago, so it’s hard to say what specific thing I was inspired from! I do think it was the Geg area in general and the Kicksey-Winsey that helped me form who I wanted Lya to be. The books seemed to imply that the Sartan resided in two places mainly, the High Realms with the Mysteriarchs and the Low Realms with the Gegs, so I thought that there were Sartan that were more mechanically-inclined living with the Gegs, and Sartan like Alfred way up in the High Realms. I loved the idea of Alfred being drawn to others a bit different from himself *coughHaplocough* and Lya being like an engineer-type person working on the Kicksey-Winsey with the Gegs that maybe Alfred has no experience about presented that opportunity.

Though when I think of Sartan that lived with the Gegs, I definitely think of that statue, and I believe my image of Lya was drawn from that in some way! I also generally like the aesthetic of hooded characters - adds a bit of that mysterious factor that Alfred probably got from her when they first met in my version.

Some Death Gate Cycle drawings during my train ride! Sometimes it’s weird drawing in public, though I don’t think anybody was really staring. Putting some music on and blending out the rest works, too.  I’m yet not fully satisfied with the designs of Limbeck and Jarre, but I’ll work some more on them and find something!
