I’ve recently become obsessed with the musical @hadestown, which retells the myth of Orpheus & Eurydice. So it felt like a good time for a #fandomfriday post featuring 1 of my oldest & greatest loves: Greek mythology. The Odyssey is legit one of my favorite stories & so I feel so blessed to have this new translation of it by Emily Wilson & a riff on the tale in CIRCE by Madeline Miller, whose 1st book THE SONG OF ACHILLES (about the Iliad) is an all-time fave! . . In the spirit of #SDCC week, I’m sharing a fangirl moment: meeting Garth Nix, author of one of my favorite fantasy books!! I’ve owned this copy of Sabriel since I was a sophomore in high school! This book signing (not at SDCC) was extra fun bc Katie of @elhofferdesign, who makes the coolest geek fashion, was there bc she’s also a HUGE fan of Sabriel & I got a peek of the Abhorsen-inspired designs she’s done for fun. 🤞🏽 that might be a future possibility! . . I spent one summer in elementary school reading every Greek/Roman myth book at my local library - and I do mean every. How I moved on to other mythologies was bc I ran out of classical 😆. Anyway, I’ve always loved how Athena’s epithet was “grey-eyed,” so I gave myself a those for my #ootd homage to her & every Greek myth I’ve loved before. 🦉🦉🦉 I think we’re so lucky now to have gorgeous, exciting, and fun mythology retellings that are also more inclusive. These books definitely read Middle Grade, but if you haven’t checked out Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson & Heroes of Olympus series, I do recommend them as fun & fast summer reads with clever riffs on Classical myth. For the YA crowd, I enjoyed Kendare Blake’s Goddess War duology & am excited for Liliam Rivera’s upcoming NEVER LOOK BACK (an Orpheus & Eurydice retelling). I meant to post this when I finished this glorious trilogy so long ago, but with the announcement of a Cardan novella for later this year makes this relevant to post again. So yay!! 🌿✨🌿 I love Holly Black’s books but I slept on this series for a long time bc I don’t particularly love faerie stories, but this one completely enthralled me. Oh, if you guys are craving dark supernatural mysteries, atmospheric New England towns, & the fraught world of secret societies x magic, I recommend @lbardugo’s adult debut NINTH HOUSE. I loved the blend of magic and murder, as well as Alex’s perspective on both the opportunity & danger offered by prestige & power. It’s been a minute since I posted a #fridayreads, but here’s a great one! I’m finally reading #Vengeful thanks to the magic of audiobook. As an adult & slow reader, it’s definitely been hard finding the time to read & it takes me frustratingly long to finish anything. I still love physical books more than anything, but audiobooks have let me make use of (and even enjoy) my work day commutes. Plus, I finally get to cross a few things off my TBR! . . #fbf A golden oldie! @stdennard’s debut SOMETHING STRANGE & DEADLY was 1 of the 1st YA books I read when the category was starting to take off.
