Hunkering Down (3/3)

Nora: (Scanning the corridor through the ACOG on her weapon.) Jaune hurry up! We need to get out of here.

Jaune: Come on, come on, baby.... Ren, we're set!

Ren: (Sitting at the security console) Arming them now. Okay, test it!

Jaune looks at Nora as he steps back behind the pair of sentry guns and picks up an empty ammo box...

Jaune: Fire in the hole!

The guns track and instantly open fire, obliterating the target with 10x28mm HEAP rounds.

Jaune: Everything is green. Close her up, Pyr.

Pyrrha just nods as she hits the switch, causing the dented, heavy slab of a door to slide closed the two feet it was able to open.

Jaune: Now all we need is a deck of cards...

Ren: Jaune!

Jaune: Ren? What is it?

Ren: The other corridor... the sentries are picking up movement...

The sound of the pair of guns starting to fire echos through the small space the team of trainees had secured. Jaune and the others rushed back to the security room. Ren seeing Jaune abandon's the chair he was in, which Jaune slips easily into.

Jaune: "A & B" tracking multiple targets...

Screeches punctuated the few spots where the guns were not firing, causing Nora and Ren to grab their rifles and move to the single door, taking flanking positions to the opening.

Pyrrha: Brothers... look at those ammo counters go...

Jaune: "A" down 50%

Pyrrha: It's a shooting gallery in there.

Jaune: "B" 50%… "A" 100 rounds… "B" 100 rounds...

Pyrrha: Fuck, how many are there?

Warning beeps emanate from the consoles as the counters continue to quickly rush to zero.

Jaune: "A" gun 20 rounds.... "B" gun right behind... "A" 10 rounds... "B" 10 rounds... "A" is empty... so is"B". (Jaune sighs as he leans back in the chair, and looks at Pyrrha, a concerned look on his face.) That's it.

Seconds later, thumping and banging could be heard.

Nora: Jaune... are we...

Jaune: We'll make it out of this... (Jaune swivels about in his chair and looks Nora directly in the eyes.) I promise.

Ren: We should close this door and seal it.

Jaune: We should, and stack anything we can to reinforce it.

The banging and thuds continued to echo, until another set of alarms started to blare.

Jaune: What the...

Pyrrha: Jaune?

Jaune: "C & D" multiple contacts... 20 metres...

Ren: How many?

The sound of the automatic weapons cycling up drowned out the thumping and banging. Jaune's teammates looked at him with worried eyes, as he turned his attention to the control modules from the second pair of guns.

Jaune: (Looks up at the bank of video screens) I can't tell. (returns his attention to the ammo readouts) "C" down 50%... "D" right behind.

Pyrrha: Jaune...

Jaune: I'll get you guys out of this... I promise... and I ALWAYS keep my promises... "D" 100 rounds... "C" 100...

Ren and Nora tightened their grips on the rifles in their hands. From where they stood, they could still hear the thumps against the other door, underscoring the firing of the remaining sentry guns.

Jaune: "D" 50 left... "C" 75...

Pyrrha lifted her eyes to the bank of video monitors, trying to catch a glimpse of whatever this was that they were facing, but between the graininess of the feed and the flashes of the guns, she was unable to.

Jaune: "D" 10... 5... she's dry. "C" 25... 10... and she's dry.

Jaune rose from his seat, and grabbed his own weapon, as a second set of thumping began to echo about them. Jaune nodded to Ren who stepped back and sealed the heavy door to the security room.

Voice over the intercom: JNPR, this is Wyvren-3... do you copy?

Pyrrha: (Slapping her hand to the earpiece she was wearing) This is JNPR. We copy!

Wyvren-3 : Sit rep.

Pyrrha: Four-man team, trapped in complex. Unknown number of hostiles... be advised this is a NEW type of grimm. I repeat, a NEW type of grimm.

Wyvren-3: Copy. ETA on your LZ 2–0 hours. Repeat ETA at LZ 2–0 hours. Copy?

Pyrrha: Copy Wyvren-3. ETA 2–0 hours.

Ren: Now we just have to get to the LZ.

Nora: Through those things?

Jaune: Wait!

Nora: Jaune-Jaune?

Jaune: Quiet!

The others stopped speaking and waited as they watched Jaune intently listening.

Jaune: Shit! Load up, we need to move!

Pyrrha: Wait… Why? (Pyrrha then noticed the silence) They've abandoned the doors!

Ren: Which means they're looking for another way to get to us.

Nora: Jaune?

Jaune: Okay... load up with everything you can carry, focus on ammo and grenades... we're making a run for it.

Nora: I don't...

Jaune: (Walks up and hugs Nora, causing her to calm slightly. He then whispers in her ear...) It's okay... it's okay, but I promised... and I will get you out of here.

Nora: (also whispering) I want to believe you...

Ren/Pyrrha: We're ready.

Jaune: (Releases Nora, and turns to face Pyrrha and Ren) Okay, once everyone is set, we're going through those doors, and booking it straight out of here. Stay alert, and just keep moving.

Ren: Jaune are you sure?

Jaune: It's the only way. Pyrrha up front, Nora and Ren mid, I'll take the rear. No stopping... cut down anything in your way. Okay?

Nora, having just loaded up her kit, joined Ren and Pyrrha and the trio nodded.

Jaune: I'll get us out of this... all of us. (Jaune checks his own kit, before taking a deep breath to steady his shaking hands.) Let's do this.

Falling into the formation, JNPR moved out into the hallway and made their way to the first pressure door. Jaune nodded to Pyrrha, who hit the switch, causing the door to start to lift open...

Hello friend, I’m going to let one of my older posts do some of the heavy lifting, and point you towards the Small Town Farming collection I put up back in 2022.

You are absolutely right that Horror is much easier to recommend, but I’ll also try and put some quick recs for solo-farming type games at the bottom of this post.

1978: The Night They Came Home, by World Champ Game Co.

1978: The Night THEY Came Home is a 1-2 player horror roleplaying game telling the story of a fateful showdown between Survivor (a clever and resilient person caught up in horrifying circumstances) and Slasher (a legendary force of evil). Using a deck of poker cards, dual rule books, varied resources, and shared play space, players will recount the events of a forsaken Halloween, zooming closer into the haunting folklore of a small Midwestern town and its inhabitants, and culminating in a violent battle for survival.

Here is a game for solo gamers and folks who want a more intimate experience. If you’re a fan of Friday the 13th, this is probably in your wheelhouse! 1978 has a win condition, meaning that either the Survivor or the Slasher will come away as the victor, and the fact that this is also a game that depends on a deck of cards means that I think this might also be a good game for folks who also enjoy card games and board games.

This game looks to have a large amount of support, from expanded content, to a number of adventures, to an online character generator. For over-the-top violence, plenty of alien goo, and shambling pathetic characters that look like they might fall apart at any moment, try out Vast Grimm.

The Lost Bay, by IKO.

What Is The Lost Bay? The Lost Bay is a Suburban Gothic tabletop RPG se199X. The Lost Bay is also the name of the setting where the game takes place: a coastal suburb inspired by films and media from the 80s and 90s. In it you play as a young person touched by the Weird, an ancient force that gives you supernatural powers. You roam the Bay with your gang, its malls, arcade games shops, skateparks and beaches, and fight the Horror that has awakened.

The Lost Bay is a game for folks who like their horror drenched in 90’s nostalgia. Characters are archetypal, and each one comes with special powers. Using your powers is exciting and effective, but also brings you closer to Scars, horrible truths about the world around you that will irrevocably change your hometown.

The Lost Bay is great for planning heists, rescuing friends, and trying to get out of dodge when the going gets rough. It’s not about fighting your way out, but more about trying to keep you and your loved ones safe. A lot of game designers have had a riot putting together adventures for this game, which you can check out in this game jam. The link above is for the Kickstarter, but in case you see this game after the campaign finishes, you can also check the game out on Itch.

Flyover Country, by Headstone Hills.

Fields of wheat and corn ripple in the wind, hungry eyes peering out between the stalks. Billboards along the road advertise strange and dangerous attractions. Smiles are too wide, manners too polite, secrets buried too deep. The neon light of a diner glows in the distance, but you may never reach its doors. An empty highway stretches out to the horizon, then wraps back in around itself. This is Flyover Country.

Flyover Country is a Midwest road-tripping horror role-playing game for 4-6 players: one gamemaster, or Watcher, and 3-5 players, or Drifters. It is designed to be played in one setting and without prep. It only requires paper, writing utensils, and a tarot deck.

This is a great option for a group where the GM is uneasy about doing a lot of prep. While one person acts as the Watcher, much of the events in this game are simply generated by drawing tarot cards from a deck. Characters will also draw from the Major Arcana to determine what their secret is - and what special ability it has given them. This is a game of hidden information, and grinding your characters down towards a tragic or grisly end.

Gravemire, by Clawhammer Games.

Gravemire is a tabletop roleplaying game about death, growth, horror, and survival, based in an original mechanical framework and set in the churning waters of the Louisiana bayou circa 1894. Players slip into the roles of outsiders arriving in the town of Scarstone, a rural outpost that has been warped by a terrible transformation known as the Convulsion. Once, Scarstone was surrounded by similar towns. The Bayou once had an end. Now, unknowable numbers of horrors seep through the uncharted backwaters, strange magic contorts reality to its whims, and the settlements that called Scarstone their neighbour jut half-ruined from the mire like bones from a wound. Times have changed.

Gravemire is a pretty brutal game, not afraid to kill your character and steal their soul. The town of Scarstone is a trap; your characters wandered in one day through curiosity or the desire for adventure, but leaving the town isn’t nearly as easy. Characters are built using a point-buy system, and as you play you may acquire more skill - but you will also acquire Aversions, which sap your Willpower and inhibit your ability to muster through the worst of what the game can throw at you.

Under the Autumn Strangely, by Graham Gentz.

"Under the Autumn Strangely" is a storytelling game of pastoral horror priming with anachronistic Americana set in a land that Never Was.

Inspired by "Over the Garden Wall" created by Patrick McHale, players collaboratively create a world uncanny and old. Codify and encourage tonal clash as the Three Roles meld whimsy, autumnal melancholy, and dread.

Take a wrong turn on a dusty road. Follow the sign past the red barn with peeling paint. Doubt your senses.

Get a little lost.

Welcome to the Never Was.

From what I understand about this game, it works best with three players, as there are three roles that the participants are expected to embody. One person plays the Arcadian, who embodies the landscape and setting. One person plays the Traveller, who acts as a “main” character. One person plays the Terror, which grows to dominate the story. Each role can only add to to one role’s suggestions, and can only deny the other’s. If you want to mix your horror with nostalgia and a romanticized vision of the rural USA, you might want to check out Under the Autumn Strangely.

The Facility, by Galen Pejeu.

You awaken, cold and in the dark. Fumbling around by low blue lights in a coffin shaped pod. You pull yourself out of the box, and in the dark see the faces of others. You are all wearing loose fitting white clothing and laceless shoes. Hospital patients?

You peer into the dark, seeing little but hearing the sound of dripping, running water and distant machinery. You gather what you can, knowing that something is hunting you. It will be here soon.

Wait.

Can you remember who you are?

The Facility is a game for any number of players, taking on the role of ordinary people, stripped of their memories and trapped in a hostile and insane labyrinth of machines and interdimensional weirdness.

The Facility places your crew into an unknown place full of machines that want to kill you. It’s great for high-action scenes, and since your characters have lost their memories, I think the struggle to find pieces of who you are (or were) is a great way to zoom in and make the horror personal. The game is Breathless, so expect your character’s gear and/or abilities to slowly wear down over time, and for the staked to get bigger every time you pause to try and re-stock. If you want a science-fiction twist to your horror game, check out The Facility.

If you like high fantasy stories check it out, it's heavily inspired by ASOIAF, but set in the Enchanted Forest. (yes I made a map :)

Summary:

At the end of season 6 Snow and Charming convince the town to head back to the Enchanted Forest. What they'd forgotten is that the EF is not a Disney fairytale, but much closer to its Grimm's roots.

As Snow tries to maintain control of her throne, enemies on all sides, Emma grapples with her new life in this alien world. At the same time, her wedding with Killian is fast approaching, and old feelings for someone else are resurfacing.

So some of these are educational graphic novels bc of who I am as a person but they're SUPER GOOD and you should still read them - but here's my list of recommendations in no particular order

Marie Curie: A Quest for Light (a graphic novel bio of the famous scientist that highlights her politics!)

Folklords (only 5 issues, does some really cool stuff with subverted fantasy tropes, Ansel is a cutie, 8/10)

The Magicians (this is based on the book series by Lev Grossman, and if you're familiar with the FX show you already know the premise, but it's VERY FUN and I like it so it's on here)

The Good Neighbors (this is more of a YA vibe and as the title suggests deals with fae nonsense, very fun)

Something is Killing the Children (some other comics go along with this one like House of Slaughter, all are in the horror genre, and it's a GREAT TIME if you're into that sort of thing)

Shubeik Lubeik (THIS IS A REALLY COOL BOOK ABOUT WISHES AND HOW THOSE WOULD LOOK IN A MORE REALISTIC CAIRO AND I LOVE IT SO MUCH)

Pixies of the Sixties (this is a period piece that deals with things like xenophobia and racism while also playing up the aesthetics of 1960s London and fairies)

Now Let Me Fly: A Portrait of Eugene Bullard (a graphic novel bio of the first African-American fighter pilot)

Little Monsters (a horror story about children vampires in a post apocalyptic setting)

Judas (yes, Iscariot, it's a really fascinating look at the Biblical figure)

Heavy Vinyl (wlw, late 90s record store, teen girl vigilante fight club- good times)

Grimm (based on the NBC show of the same name, there are other titles set in this world too, I'm very fond of this extremely trashy fairtytale-cop show mashup and how poorly it represents cops)

Godshaper (there's a god for every person, except one and he teams up with a god who doesn't have a person and together they travel around looking for a warm welcome and a paying rock gig)

Evita, the Life and Work of Eva Perón (a biography of the former Argentinian first lady)

Eat the Rich (a little bit like Knives Out)

Carmilla: The First Vampire (queer feminist murder mystery inspired by the gothic novel, Carmilla, and pulling from Chinese folklore)

Bone Parish (a necromantic horror story about the rich peddling drugs made with the ashes of the deceased)

Blue Book (true tales of ordinary people encountering the strange and impossible - ex. alien abductions)

Art Brut (equal parts police procedural, hyper-fantasy, and psychological thriller set on a backdrop of a trip through art history)

Aristotle (biography of the philosopher dealing with more than just his ideas)

Alienated (a story about having the power to change the world but not being ready to wield that power- more YA vibes but a good read for any age imo)

Abbott (and Abbott: 1973- a tabloid reporter investigates grisly crimes she knows the police have ignored and that she knows are occult in origin)

Saw your little thing about ask you anything, and I'm sure you've been asked this before but I haven't seen it... HOWEVER, what pieces of media do you think have inspired you the most to make your ocs and the comics that go with them?

A though question. I don't think I have anyone as a direct inspiration as "I want to draw like this artist" or "I want to create stories like this author". I'm certain that the majority of my inspiration is subconscious or runs around certain favorite tropes or themes, like punk and cyperbunk, as well as lots of music, too.

If I narrow this down to media which has really inspired me when I have encountered it the first time, then the inspiration list will be the following:

Comics by Petri Hiltunen. Some of his works have been translated to English, like Anabasis. I can't remember anymore what happened in the comic Asfaltitasanko (An Asphalt Field) but I remember that it really hit me the right way when I was 13.

Sláine series by Simon Bisley. It's still running and I read every new book. This is actually a feminist barbarian comic, which is a great combination and you will see echoes of that in Alrick.

Hob Gandling's story in The Sandman series. Oh I wish I could experience again the time when I read the story for the first time. I was mind opening for a 13 year old.

Vintage manga from 70's and 80's, as well as anime from 90's and early 2000 (like Slayers Next below). Expressions were very prominent back then and I do generously use that whenever possible. I was SUPER happy when I started watching Jujutsu Kaisen and it had those really big expressions!

I think that from anime, I should perhaps mention Bleach, because Grimm is inspired by Bleach series Grimmjow. Who is, by the way, also a cat (a panther).

Alrick, the whole premise of Death-Head Organization and the generous use of black, solid masses gets all its inspiration from a manga Sun-Ken Rock. Especially from the protagonist Ken Kitano, who is the best positive masculine example in any media I have ever encountered. Also, Algoth looks is inspired by Ken's right hand man, Benito Armani:

For the animals and animal parts of the characters in DHD, I LOVE kemonomimi! For other series, inspiration comes from game series Bloody Roar and from a comic series Blacksad. Rena is inspired by Bloody Roar's Mitsuko the Wild Boar.

We simply can't forget fashion! Metal, punk, cyberpunk, kinksters, and other dark dressed underground people. I'm asked at times why everyone seems to dress up the same and my answer is that since the comic is black and white, with black outfits I get to add some contrast to it. Alexander McQueen is awesome!

Other mentions to practice keeping mind open, which allows stories to be formed without judgment or thinking that I have no base for this: - Jeffrey Burton Russell's books about the Devil and religious history - Conspiracy theories (as what kinds of things people believe in and how they find evidence for it to support their views, including opposing conspiracy theories like Moon landing was fake VS Moon landing did happen but we haven't gone back because of aliens on the Moon) - Quantum physics

I'm certain you can pick up more things which have inspired me from my stories and drawings. But, if we speak ONLY about Death-Head's Deal, then underground fashion, Sun-Ken Rock, 80's and 90's vintage manga&anime, and Blacksad are the ones.

My past weirdly Bleedman inspired characters

I contemplated posting this cause it was weird & I felt like talking about past shit but forgot about it. I'm posting it now cause I found a video talking about Grimm Tales from Down Below & how weird it was. For some reason it made me decided to make this post.

Before I say anything I want to say I don't follow Bleedman anymore & mostly only followed/was a fan of him when I was a kid. I say this because Grimm Tales(along with many other stuff) was weird & as a child I was oblivious of how Mini Mandy's affection towards Junior was.(Nor understood how weird some shit was)

That being said another explanation(that this post was meant to start off with) is that when I was a child before I realized that I should look up the Bleedman comics my only way to watch them was to hope someone put the comics up in videos.(Like how I use to find dounjishi in the wild west of Youtube when people could put anime/cartoon episodes in 3 parts) I was able to watch a little of Sugar Bits & a lot of the early comics of Bleedman's PPG comic. Anything I knew that wasn't in the comics was in AMV stuff.(A specific one I saw had These Words I'll Never Say by Avril Lavigne)

These characters were inspired by Grimm Tales from Down Below & their story is based on what I originally thought Grimm Tales was about cause I've often had weird moments of random guessing. I'd see bits about something & cause I was unable to see the whole thing my imagination would go wild. An example is the movie Home(with the purple aliens) I was under the impression the girl/human companion/main character was a teen that had issues/a fight with her mom that led to running away from home & now she wants to find her mom & make amends. In reality it's a girl that was dealing with the invasion for a few days(hard to tell due to passing at the start) trying to cope with the kidnapping of her mom when they were getting use to having moved to a new home & was trying to find her missing mom.

So as I said these two characters are inspired by what I thought Grim Tales was from what little I knew from AMV videos.(Which at the very least had the prologue pages were Junior & Minnie were visiting the flowers & a pic of Minnie being torn apart) I don't remember when I made these sketches just know I tried to recreate the Bleedman art style. I have no idea if I could do this again & do not want to try.

The idea is some how this teen girl managed to get stuck in hell with no idea how to get home. The grim reaper's apprentice ends up making friends with her & the two end up on an adventure through hell as the apprentice tries to help his friend return home unharmed.

The idea is that she does eventually make it back home after a long adventure but are separated since the apprentice doesn't belong there. If you want a bittersweet ending then going the ragdoll route then the apprentice fails to keep her safe leading to the girl getting torn apart. The apprentice with help manages to put her back together as a ragdoll but thanks to all of this she's unable to return home however she & the apprentice are able to stay together as friends & go on more adventures together.

I dunno how I came up with the names but I guess I named these two Juliet & Cody at some point. Looking at these pictures I think at one point I was going to turn them into talking sprites for a game I never got to.

Juliet: A stubborn/strong willed girl that some how fell into the underworld or something managed to drag her in. While curious about the place she's currently stuck in Juliet would really like to go home. The skulls in her ponytails are pendants meant to protect her on her journey through the underworld to find a way home as well as make people think she's associated with the Grim Reaper as a way to leave her alone. Cody has one on one of his ears & it seems Juliet has managed to break through his distant behavior. Despite her stubborn/at times headstrong behavior she can have a friendly side & sometimes teases Cody.

Cody: Cody is the apprentice of the Grim Reaper, he at some point use to be a teenager that ended up dead/taken to the underworld. His appearance has become altered over time partly thanks to his boss trying to both repair him & make Cody stronger. The Grim Reaper despite his stern behavior & dark nature seems to consider Cody his son. Cody doesn't like his boss & this might add into Cody's often distant behavior. Despite this he seems to have managed to make a few connections & seems to be willing to help out in certain situations. There are moments were he still acts possibly like how he use to be before ending up in the underworld, he doesn't like the fact he's short.

I dunno why I drew this, I actually had to alter it a little

Cody doesn't like the fact Juliet is making fun of him for being short. This also shows what memes were popular at the time kind of.

Once Upon a Time: The Origins & Evolution of Crystal Magic

Crystal Magic is the title of my long on-going project that is essentially a space opera retelling of several fairytales. I have been working on this project since 2018, and it's been through many different evolutions.

It started as a script project for a high school creative writing class, a simple retelling of one of the Brothers Grimm's lesser-known fairytales in a different setting than pre-1800s Germany in the form of a short film script.

I chose Snow-White and Rose-Red and wanted to put it in a Star Wars inspired setting, because I was totally obsessed with the franchise at the time. One of the first ideas I remember about the project was reading the original fairytale and re-envisioning the mystic forest as an equally-as-mysterious city on an alien planet, still bustling with life as a forest is, but sterile in its lack of interaction with our protagonists.

In particular, the idea that sparked me to choose to continue with that direction for the project was the idea of tying the city to its origins by using tall skyscrapers like a forest, and turning the street-lamps green to keep that color story. That's when I knew I had an idea worth exploring.

In adapting the story, I was making careful choices. For example, in the original fairytale, I'd say Snow-White is the more focused-on of the two sisters, being the one to get with the bear prince in the end. She was also more of the ideal girl character in the Grimms' work, being pious and domestic and shy, while Rose-Red was wild and spirited.

Naturally, given the change in genre expectations and given that Snow White had a second fairytale (I know they aren't the same but shhh) that Rose-Red would be the central character of the screenplay.

But I never stopped wondering about what would happen to my Snow-White after her encounter with the space-opera version of the alien bear prince and dwarf sorcerer. Would she go on to fall in love with a dwarf-prince perhaps and learn their side of the story?

So I turned the screenplay into a proof of concept short story and began re-building the world, over and over again until I felt I got it right.

A lot has changed since the original screenplay now that we are on the fourth novel draft. None of the characters have their original names for one, with the twins originally being named Kiki Starshine and Gwenillian (no, I am not kidding), the setting being Earth that has made contact with aliens, and the dwarves being turned into bejeweled aliens known as the Diamondgardians.

But there are elements of that original version still there. The Otsoans, the bear-inspired aliens may have changed in their design motifs a great many times, but they have remained in every version of the story, as have the Diamondgardians with their name changes to the Heirhelm and later the Annwynese, all with their aesthetic sensibilities clarified and reimagined.

And at the heart of it still are Snow-White, a dark-haired girl who is gentle and domestic and shy, and Rose-Red, her wilder sister with dreams beyond their simple home.

I've taken many hiatuses from this project over the last several years, but I always come back to this story and find new ways to tell it. I've learned so much from this project about the nature of writing and how if an idea is truly powerful and meant to be, it will stick around.

Jaune: (Tossing the smoking metal to the floor) Shit!

Ren: That is not a normal reaction for grimm blood. It's almost like it's eating away... Jaune you sword!

Jaune: (Tosses Crocea Mors to the floor as he notices the blade is also smoking.) Fucking hell!

Nora, having found the bathroom, grabbed a small plastic waste bin and filled it with water. She quickly rushes back into the main room and douses both items with the water, diluting the black goo and stopping the acidic reaction.

Pyrrha: How did you know...

Nora: It was a guess.

Pyrrha: A guess?

Nora: Well, chemical spills on skin should be flushed with water, so I figured this was similar.

Loud thuds echoed through the room, causing them all to stop speaking. They just stood there waiting. Those with working weapons tightening their hold upon them. Unarmed, Jaune knew he couldn't do much if one of those things got through the pressure doors, so he moved past his teammates and took a seat at the security console.

As his teammates moved to take positions about the room's only door, Jaune started typing on the keyboard in front of him. He silently thanked Terra for her mentoring him, it was two years well spent. His fingers danced over the keys, as he not so much hacked, but nudged the security system back online. Which brought up all the cameras.

Jaune: Shit!

Pyrrha: Jaune? What is it?

Jaune: They are more than a few of those things out there... a lot more than a few.

Nora: Can you tell how many?

Jaune: No.

Ren: (Pulls his head back into the room.) That door is taking a beating. I’m not sure now much longer it can last.

Jaune: Okay, okay... let's see...

Pyrrha: Jaune?

Jaune: Where is it?

Nora: Fearless Leader?

Jaune: Got it!

Loud screeching could be heard from the fireside of the door as alarms and flashing lights went off in the room. Jaune paid none of it any attention as he continually kept typing in commands. After a few more keystrokes, the alarms were silenced.

Nora: What did you do?

Jaune: I tripped the fire suppression system, specifically in that corridor...

Ren: I don't hear them at the door anymore.

Pyrrha: How did that work? How did you know it would work?

Jaune: I didn't. We lucked out that they used an old CO2 system, over a more modern one.

Pyrrha: I don't...

Ren: CO2 replaces oxygen, and is freezing when released from under pressure. You drove them off.

Nora: I hate to be a bummer, but what now? We're still stuck in here, and I doubt that trick will work a second time.

Jaune: We take stock of what we have available to us, and we figure it from there.

Nora, Ren and Pyrrha all nodded and set about to check their individual kits, while Jaune turned his attention back to the monitors. His deep blue eyes scanned the screens looking for any sign of whatever these things were. It took the others only a few minutes to take stock.

Ren: Well, I have six mags, and three days of rations, plus a first air kit.

Pyrrha: Same on rations, also a first aid kit, and about eight magazines of ammo.

Nora: Same on the rations and kit, but only two mags.

Jaune: I have rations and a first aid kit, but no ammo. (Looks at the charred and pitted remains of his family's heirloom) I'm also basically unarmed.

Pyrrha: So how long before we can expect help?

Jaune: If we can't get a message out, five days.

Ren: As you said, we can stretch the rations out pretty far, but if we end up having to fight those things... we don't have enough ammo... and considering what happened to Crocea Mors, melee is ill-advised.

Nora: So what's the plan?

Jaune: You and Pyrrha are going to check the pressure doors, and then make sure there are no other ways they can get into that corridor. Ren take a look around, see if there is anything we can use.

Ren: This is a security room, so they should have a weapons locker. (Looks about and notices a door with a keypad) I think that might be it, but without a code.

Pyrrha: I think I can take care of the needing a code.

Jaune: Okay, sounds like we have the basics covered. Pyr if you please open that door for Ren and then you and Nora can make a quick check.

Nora: What are you going to do?

Jaune: I'm going to see if I can patch into the main communications array. Try and get a signal out.

With that, everyone went about their tasks, and Jaune put every bit of his training from Terra to work. The others had easily taken care of their objectives, while Jaune struggled to make the rather outdated system do what he wanted. He had almost given up when he finally was able to make his coding work. He smiled as he entered the last lines of code.

Jaune: We have a connection, and we are transmitting.

Nora: The door those things were banging against is okay shape, the other door is perfect.

Pyrrha: I did what I could with my semblance, but it wasn't much. I also crumpled any air vents I saw. Not enough to close them off, but enough that nothing our size could get through them.

Jaune: Ren?

Ren: (Tosses an automatic rifle on the desk Jaune was sitting at.) We have more weapons. There's half a dozen of these in that room, some grenades, and at least ten magazines for each, plus these.

Jaune stood up and with Nora and Pyrrha moved over to the large black case Ren pulled out of the small room. Laying it down, he popped the latches and lifted the top.

Jaune: I haven't seen one of these since I left Ansel.

Nora: It's a gun, right?

Jaune: It's a UA 571-C Automated Sentry gun.

Pyrrha: You know about these, Jaune?

Jaune: Yeah, helped my dad do maintenance and reload runs on the ones around Ansel. We have them mounted on our walls at specific spots. These are in mint condition.

Ren: So you think they might be of any use?

Jaune: I do.

Nora: How?

Jaune: How many do we have?

Ren: Four.

Jaune: Good, then I think what we should do is set two up on the outside of each of the pressure doors. We arm them and then seal the doors. If anything comes towards them that isn't human... they'll go off.

Pyrrha: You sure about that, Jaune?

Jaune: You and Nora both said that door took a beating. We need to do something that will help us hold out. I've got an emergency transmission broadcasting... but we still need to hold out until we receive assistance.

Ren: You sure you know how to set these up?

Jaune: I do. Was there anything else of any use in that locker?

Ren: A few sets of clam-shell body armour.

Jaune: Okay, here's the plan. Everyone is going to get on a suit of body armour, and take one of those rifles. You're going to save your other arms for a last resort. We use up the supplies we found first.

The trio nodded.

Jaune: Then while Ren watches the monitors, Nora, Pyrrha and I will set up the sentry guns. Then we seal the doors and wait it out. With any luck we'll get a response, and be out of here in a few hours.
