XVI THE TOWER

“I'd like to go out into the city today.” You told one of the stableman. 

They stopped giving hay to the horses, turning to look at you with raised eyebrows. “Have you asked your parents, my lady?”

“I'm just going into town outside the keep.” You frowned, thinking back to the time you did ask them. While you knew your parents were busy you didn’t think they would wave you off with a no. 

“Not leaving the country.” You added. 

“I'm afraid I only take orders from your parents. If they have not approved, I'm afraid I cannot do that for you.” The man went back to doing his chores.

“Hey!” You called after, rushing towards him. “You don't know what it's like in there.”

“It's not that.” Your voice turned soft, making Han feel sort of bad for the way he was speaking to you. “The staff doesn't let me do anything if my parents don't have a say in it.”

“Stop patronizing me!” You huffed out, following after his steps again. 

He quickly stopped causing you to bump into him. You gasped queitly, holding onto his arms to keep from falling over. 

“Look, princess. I don't care what your parents do and don't do with you.” He told you. “You're just another noble lady coming to ruin our day by taking what we work hard for just to use it for personal gain. Your parents already do that as is.”

You were froed for a moment as you looked at him confused. Han raised a brow at your look, waiting for you to say something else. 

“My parents?” You asked quietly. 

“Uh, yeah.” Han spoke. “They are the worst. Always raising taxes, taking from us and not giving enough money. Who knows how they're still in power.” He began to head towards a shop on the street, dropping his bags at the entrance. 

He turned around when you stood still in the middle of the small alleyway, frowning as he took in your confused expression. If he didn’t know any better it would seem as thought this was the first time you were hearing about this kind of thing. 

“No.” You shook your head. “That can't be true. My parents always give to the people. They care for them.” You looked up at him, the look of denial clear on your face. 

“You're so caught under their arms you don't even know the truth.” He whisepred, growing closer to you. “Did you know, your mother had a child killed because they ran into her while on the streets? Or that your father comes down to the brother every other week? You have no clue who you're living with.” He told you.

“I—I have to go.” You shook your head, tears springing in your eyes as you thought about all that Han had told you. “This can't be true.” You whispered to yourself turning around. 

He had always heard about how the king and queen seemed to keep the princess under their care. But it was much deeper than that. The only time they were ever allowed to see her was when they would have parades and she would always be behind in a carriage. It was clear (Y/N) had hardly ever been allowed to go see the people. 

But from the staff that did work in the castle, they had always spoken so highly of her. Saying she was the kindest of all her family and cared deeply about what they all thought. She was a studious person who saw the world as something that needed protecting. She was someone of justice–someone who catered to the needs of everyone with the right rule. 

A much better ruler than her parents. 

“Hey!” Han shouted, running after you. “Wait!”

When he reached you, you had been hyperventilating, thinking about all those lies you had been told. You knew Han had been right–you had seen the clues of how cruel your parents actually were. All those staff members who talked behind their back, didn’t try to go against their orders. All those times they would look at you in fear after hearing that you wanted to do something without their permission. You were blocking out the truth on your own. 

Your chest began to tighten and your legs felt weak. You were close to falling over until Han held you up with his arms wrapped around you. 

“Hey, hey. Look at me.” Han whispered, holding your face with his hands softly. They were calloused, rough due to his hard work. “I'm sorry.” He told you. “I'm sorry I told you all those things but you need to breathe for me okay? Deep breaths.”

You looked at him with tears falling down your cheeks, his thumbs rubbing them away. “Why did you help me?” You asked him quietly. 

“Because I know what it's like to have an anxiety attack. I'm sorry I put you in that position.” He pulled you into his chest, allowing you to wrap your arms around him. His breathing was soothing you, bringing you back to the right state of mind. With closed eyes you knew what it was you had to do. 

“It's okay.” You took in a deep breath pulling away from him. You gave him a smile, confusing Han for a moment. “I can't let them be those kinds of rulers. The people deserve better.”

“Like who?” He asked. “You?”

“I am the heir.” You let go of him, holding your head high as if you hadn’t just had a panic attack. “I'll fix this. I promise, Jisung.”

And you kept that promise. It was easy to create a rebellion against your parents and cause them to step down from their positions. You got not only the staff but also the council on your side–after you took care of the corrupt in it of course. With how much you had studied to become the perfect heir, you knew all there was to politics in the country. 

You accused your father of war crimes and adultery. Your mother was outraged with this–having now known. She had tried to side with you, saying you were perfect for the throne. However you accused her of murder and fraud. Bezzling the crown’s money for her own luxuries. They tried to fight against you but you had the soldiers and citizens to back you up. 

And so now you sat at the throne, a metal crown on your head to signify your new position. A large smile graced your lips as you saw someone walking up the steps. He took a glance at the guards at your side but when he saw you come to a stand and walked down the steps to meet him he didn’t find it in himself to worry. 

“You kept your promise.” He told you, looking up at the crown. 

It was his most prized possession after you had asked him to make it. He added in his own touch as per your request. You wanted it to serve as a reminder that he was the one who opened your eyes. 

“I told you I would.” You answered. “Thank you for helping me.” Your face softened, feet shuffling closer to him.

Your hands twitched at your side, wanting to reach out for him. But he knew with the look in your eyes that there would be a moment for that. Alone and away from the prying eyes of others.

Belo definitely lives a very co-dependent lifestyle. If he's not begging for work, he's usually aimlessly ambulating in the garden. He'll eventually start picking up an instrument or two. Perhaps a harp or a something softly melodious. Krulu would enjoy it if he learned to play an organ.

Fank-e spends a lot of his free time online. He's got a widespread reach online in spite of TCE policy being that staff remain outside of social media. Fank-e's everywhere. And I mean everywhere. A shitload of profiles exist wherein he converses and games with strangers, he prides himself in his ability to make so many online friends and administrating several pages. When he's not immersed in his digital life, he does eventually go to random stores or party locations, yes.

Vinnel, as a creative sort, enjoys collecting dolls and customizing them. He's also a bit of a painter, but not on Shags' level. He spends a lot of free time collecting/altering items for the escape game floor.

Patches has a green thumb, as plant magic is one of his most favored types of magic. It's not uncommon to see him fucking around with garden plants. When he truly has time for it, yes, he does indulge the horse girl urges.

Morell whittles. He's not professional at it, and he usually doesn't take on very complex projects, but it's a little hobby. Nebul is an astrology bitch. He enjoys tarot and is very into learning about people's behavior. He definitely reads about social sciences, it's very useful to him. Naturally, he does spend a good part of his free time with pets.

Santi is probably the biggest reader here. I think I've said that before. I find it funny that you guessed everyone else reads except him.

You didn't mention Sybastian, but I will. It may look like the mimic doesn't care for hobbies, and honestly providing for the little ones takes a considerable chunk of free time. He does have a tendency to collect rare coins, having no recollection of how it started.

Krulu has a lot of art projects that would probably blind you if you looked at them raw. When he eventually starts creating again, that'll be the focus of his routine.

I recently finished reading all of the books in the Discworld series, the expansive series written by Terry Pratchett that follows a range of characters that live on the same disc? (This was never completely clear, but I assume so?) Our main leads being Sam Vimes, Tiffany Aching, Rincewind and Moist Von Lipwig.

Probably one of the greatest fantasy series of all time, Discworld is makes you cry, makes you laugh, makes you think, and it makes you kind of mad, but all in all, it is a very human experience on a world that is completely incredible (and has a monkey for a librarian, and is there anything better than that?).

These are my favourite books from the series.

Going Postal (book 33) - Moist Von Lipwig is a conman who is then moved into running the Postal Service by Lord Vetinari and what a job to get to be honest. This story is funny and I was laughing out loud several times. The characters are fantastic especially those that work in the post office and it makes for an incredible introduction to the character of Von Lipwig who truly is a great lead character and it makes sense why Pratchett used him in more books.

Monstrous Regiment (book 31) - Truly the story of war? what is it good for? Absolutely nothing. Monstrous Regiment is the story of Polly Perks who is looking for her brother on the frontline and ends up in Vimes' monstrous regiment. The characters are endearing and funny, the plot moves fast and really allows you to invest in everyone in the story and leaves you thinking and that for me is truly the sign of a good book.

Mort (book 4) - I loved this book so much and really appreciated the incredible plot, the amazing characters particularly that of Death. Mort is the apprentice of death and it makes for a good life, freedom to the horse, board and a wage, and it makes for a pretty good adventure too. I wasn't sure if I wasn't going to continue the series at this point, but this one made me keep going and I am so glad I did.

Witches Abroad (book 12) - Granny Weatherwax is probably one of the best characters in this series, and this book is so good. The plot is to stop a happy ending of a prince ending up with a servant girl it really does make for a funny and also a thought provoking read. The quote from Granny Weatherwax in this book:

“Listen, happy endings is fine if they turn out happy,” said Granny, glaring at the sky. “But you can’t make ’em for other people. Like the only way you could make a happy marriage is by cuttin’ their heads off as soon as they say ‘I do’, yes? You can’t make happiness…” Granny Weatherwax stared at the distant city. “All you can do,” she said, “is make an ending.”

Witches Abroad is iconic.

Night Watch (book 29) - I do feel as the series goes on, the better it gets and Night Watch is definitely one of those books where you are left with an incredible array of characters, a story that pulls you in and a way in to a series that you will never want to end. Vimes is probably one of my favourite characters in a series ever, this book is one of the reasons why.

Also this quote is from Night Watch Men At Arms and it's spot on:

“The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money. Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of okay for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. Those were the kind of boots Vimes always bought, and wore until the soles were so thin that he could tell where he was in Ankh-Morpork on a foggy night by the feel of the cobbles. But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that’d still be keeping his feet dry in ten years’ time, while a poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet. This was the Captain Samuel Vimes ‘Boots’ theory of socio-economic unfairness.”

To take this series apart is a difficult one, even if they can be read separately. I really appreciate how connected these books feel and the different perspectives we get. I like the spotlight we get on people's lives as we move through the series and how even in the maddest of moments there's a moment you can relate to.

I loved reading this series, and it bookslumped me when I finished it, so I hope if you're going to do this and read them all I highly recommend some books to reread you love to save yourself.

House of the Dragon Episode One thoughts as I watch:

I really like the two young girls so far they’ve been captivating and Matt Smith is promising as a creepy grooming uncle

Not sure I enjoy the… visuals?? It’s kind of uncanny valley. It both feels too real (because I can tell it’s a set) and not real enough (because I can tell it’s a set). Nothing wrong with the sets in question, just… disappointingly obvious. GoT had sets too (alongside a plethora of locations which gave it a valuable realism) but all the sets in Game of Thrones weren’t overly noticeable which meant they felt beautifully rich in terms of world building.

Also don’t like the editing style. Early GoT was frugal w/ editing. The dialogue took centre stage and actors were allowed to command a scene from beginning until end (unless there was a poignant reaction). So far the editing feels sporadic and unintentional. And certain camera shots feel a tad ambitious for no particular reason, which makes it seem indulgent. It’s all a little distracting.

The dialogue is actually good! Not word play levels that I expect, but contextually there isn’t much need yet. Not much politicking happening because there’s no real “enemy” whereas in GoT the enemy was everyone, so much politicking all the time. The dialogue, though clever, is very upfront (because the targs are unquestionable in their power). So it’s good. No need to distract ppl with so many cuts and weird shots.

Maybe they’re trying to distract from the sets?

It just feels a bit… modern? Staged?

A quick question: idk if it’s my tv or not, but like is the frame sped up? On my tv it all feels s little too fast in movement (sometimes tv offers a “hyper realism” thing and that might be messing w/ my experience)

There’s def a lack of proper intrigue. But I know that’s to come, so it’s fine.

Really it’s the visual part that bothers me.

Not sure I enjoy seeing Matt smith in a sex scene but alright

The girls are the best part for sure, and I know they’re the point of it all, so I do hope the writers aren’t sacrificing the intrigue of other characters for them.

Like imagine game of thrones if D&D framed Jon Snow as the main character from the beginning. It’d be boring af

-my art got a lot honest, too. part of it being i’m working mostly by hand rather than digitization: i still do digital art but i’m having to be wise about it with the rise of ai and everything

-started “seeing things as they are”, i.e., people who are all talk and no walk, “fake it til you make it” is bullshit always has been and always will be, and things that are too good to be true, but also good people coming from all walks of life and small miracles in the strangest of places like bowls of soup or the twinkle in alex’s eyes or the way a cloud looks

-started standing up for things i believe in (supporting art and artists, supporting science at its root, taking care of your body, lgbtq+ rights and all things pertaining to sexuality, supporting people from different backgrounds, supporting men as well as women because there’s way too much cartoon “feminism” that’s just an excuse for people to be dickheads to boys and men while acting like girls and women are perfect in every way)

-started becoming really bored and disenchanted with “rockism” and i began paying more attention to smaller acts, weirder shit, and different genres without being all like “why isn’t this more popular?” out the gate in junction with the basic stuff because it’s buried in the same way diamonds are buried

-realized that i’m only a small part of an even bigger thing

-animals began warming up to me more (they always have but it was especially the case then; lots of cats and dogs, but also lots of birds, reptiles, horses, fish, billy goats, deer, elk, and even a couple of foxes?)

-gained 40+ pounds as of my writing this (30 in 2021, 17 last year, and i lost a couple so far this year: 40 pounds is still 40 pounds, and i can barely see my toes anymore when i look down 😅) and figured that it’s actually been a lifelong dream of mine to be very chubby, like i’ve always felt it in hindsight, from looking at my belly in the mirror and wishing it was fat to wanting dessert in a restaurant when my parents refused it. but i also want to stay healthy, like… i like wendy’s, arby’s, dairy queen, jersey mike’s, jack in the box, dutch bros., chili’s, el pollo loco, in n’ out, and outback steakhouse as much as the next fat girl but i actually prefer eating at home, and i eat mainly whole food at that, too—i like foreign food, too, mainly your asian stuff like japanese and vietnamese food. i’ve repressed a lot of desire out of fear of being judged for my weight (pluto is going to make me extra chubby? i’m kinda down 😆😋)

-shit got really erotic with me, like… more so than when saturn was in capricorn because it was all me in aquarius

-with my weight gain, i’ve grown very strong, like i don’t think i would have been able to shovel a pathway through 2-foot snow drifts for my mom, my dog, and myself without having this big, round “mountaineer woman” belly on me. i’m also way more flexible than i was in high school, too (i do miss riding my bike from home to the cafe nearby for coffee and pie, though)

-i’ve grown very disillusioned and displeased with mainstream culture, be it on tv or the internet, and i’ve just decided to go with my heart and what i like and i don’t care if i’m alone in it, too

-my intuition got absurdly sharp during that transit, too, like things would manifest to me after i talked about it in throwaway fashion or thought about it in fleeting detail

-been traveling a lot, usually to the beach or down to l.a., or even just doing “common people” type stuff like going to the movies or to a nice restaurant

-returned to things i loved as a kid that i sort of had to give up during my teen years like meteorology and comics and cartoons i grew up watching and horror and eating whatever i feel like (i had one of those little pies you get at walmart, blueberry of course + a piece of cake the other day: 8 year old me was in bliss!)

-discovered my heritage after not really knowing my whole life (i’m two parts latin, two parts from the british isles, one part scandinavian, and a tablespoon of baltic states: i always thought i was native american and german)

-my mom’s got saturn in aquarius, too, and during her own return, she picked up more hobbies like those diamond paintings, legos, and sewing (she and i are also big on funko pops, rocks, gardening, and books)

-she and i also got into a discussion about dreams in life a couple of times during that transit, how i want to make a comic book someday and go back into ceramics and art glass and working with my hands, while she wants to write and publish a novel and get more into carpentry

-problems with the house came up, too, like my stepdad dying and ownership of the house going into limbo, the septic backing up, the place being ungodly cold in the winter and hotter than holy fuck in the summer, and recently, losing the internet for four days

-saw a lot of weather during that transit, too, like… california is pretty much known for having nice day after nice day after nice day after nice day to the point of monotony, but i saw… snowstorms, the thickest fog i’ve ever seen, the brightest rainbows i’ve ever seen, awful heat waves, monsoon flows, hail, a couple of bomb cyclones, floods, hydrological outlooks, sleet, a shitload of rain, stupidly high winds, whatever tf was happening last spring when i didn’t put my winter clothes and warm blankets away until the end of june, snow up to my hip, the place actually looking like anchorage alaska at one point, and even funnel clouds

-the big thing is “acab” (all cops are bastards)… you know what’s really weird is i actually met a lot of cool cops during that transit, guys who were really good guys, like they were actually doing justice in front of me, a heavyset woman of mixed race. social justice should never be trendy, either: you stand for something because it feels right to you, not because it’s expected of you.

-i’ve also always known the power of lurking, just observing behavior, but saturn in aquarius really made me love doing that. there’s so much power in just watching people and seeing how they behave, especially when they think you aren’t around.

i should also mention that saturn was in my 8th house and conjunct my moon at one point, and i had my saturn return last month on the 17th, too! those transits get way too of a bad wrap, imo: questioning my sexuality and gender to the point of feeling overwhelmed and completely lost aside, saturn in the 8th is actually pretty cool at some points—in some cases, fun. and the saturn return can actually be the best thing to happen to you, too. saturn on the moon was kind of tough, though, like i often felt really robotic during that.

i didn’t read many comics because i lived in a rlly small rural town & comic books were too expensive with my reading speed. i had to pick the biggest books i could to make them last or i’d end up reading the cook books again by the end of the month. also i added video games bc that’s where a lot of my fav universes are. 

books: (i could go on for 20 years but i’ll stick to a few)

wheel of time -

i got the first book i think when i was 8/9. it took me a week to get past the prologue bc i did not appreciate feeling confused but once i got to Rand & the road and the figure in the cloak i was HOOKED. i brought it to school that week & a sub teacher (legend, in hindsight) came up & was like ‘oh! that’s a great book’ and i mostly glared distrustfully at her bc teachers liked to take books off me or (hate hate) take me aside when the rest of the class were doing sums or whatever and make me read a passage to them, then drill me about the meaning of different words. i get they were trying to see if i actually had that reading level or whatever but it was mortifying. so yeah, glared at her, so sorry bc she was right. it took me years to acquire and read all of the books but been so so normal about them ever since. my favs are probably moiraine (shocker), lan, elayne (actually love her so much an unreasonable amount), mat (gender reasons) and siuan (obviously). 

the book of the ancestor -

THESE BOOKS. there are nuns in this too. they are badass ninja magic nuns and a lot of them are so so gay. it’s about the found family and a little girl called Nona who probably would bite you but she’s actually the kindest softest best person in the world. her friends are all kind of gay for her; she’s kind of gay for all her friends. there are two older nuns called Apple & Kettle who are just flagrantly massive lesbians and it’s so so funny. Apple is a poisoner & Kettle is a spy and they have just such a THING going on i adore them. this trilogy is wonderful & the magic is so cool & the character dynamics are !!!!! feral there’s a Judas character there’s rivals-to-lover/ friends-to-lover. it’s a meditation on where we find meaning and in whom and what we fight for. has everything i love love love. also like… can think of two men off the top of my head in a cast of like 40 deranged women. amazing. 

the fitz & the fool books -

got this on family holiday to Rome when i was 10. ignored rome in favour of reading this day and night. i read it three times in one week. barely stepped foot in the pool. it’s a gorgeous character-driven story. fitzchivalry farseer is ultimate himbo rep. also magical bonding with a wolf will get me every time. there are like two trilogies now. they r so good. 

the murderbot diaries -

ghdklskdsl killer robot gains sentience. just wants to watch their TV shows & be left alone. sadly, stupid humans get in stupid situation & secunit has to endure the mortifying ordeal of being known. SECUNIT i’d die for u. the novels are pretty short but there are quite a few now & each one has a new and awesome take on artificial intelligence and self-advocacy and found family and what it means to be alive. 

the broken earth trilogy -

these books ripped my heart out of my chest and i said thank you. gorgeously written. deals with rlly rlly interesting & important themes. the main character is just so cool, she’s also, like, an older woman with kids but she’s the hero and the main character and i think that’s kind of awesome. the magic SLAPS. it’s plate tectonics babey. 

the black magician trilogy -

these & wot were my gateway to the fantasy genre fr fr. my friend’s mom bought her the first one and she fobbed it off on me (we were 9. she was only interested in this webside called Howrse where you pretended to own horses??) i got locked outside my house after walking home from hers and spent two hours tucked into a narrow nook outside the back door while it bucketed rain down around me. best two hours of my life. first canon queer rep i ever read. there r a bunch of trilogies now. great stuff on healing magic & sonea is so stubborn i love that for her. don’t let anyone reason with you darling. 

movies:

star wars: yes yes yes we know that casper likes star wars. but casper LOVES star wars. obi-wan is my favourite character in the prequels. in the og trilogy probably han solo (i am not immune to THAT), but also as i got older Luke Skywalker too. c3po for that bitch boy energy. i owe him a lot. there is only one movie in the third trilogy & i love Finn. shame they never made the last two movies. 

pirates of the caribbean: ELIZABETH SWAN. we can all blame her for my lesbian behaviour. we can all blame will turner for my gender. 

the alien movies: 1 & 2 mostly, but i will watch the others with my eyes. i can’t help myself. lots of blood & gore = casper happy. blood + actual good storytelling is like porn with plot to me but i will take porn without plot. i am a simple creature. i loved NEWT because talking can be evil sometimes and also living for weeks in a deserted compound with a killer robot - what?? like it’s hard?? obvs Ripley is a legend. bush representation. 

lotr: i love the books too but i grew up on the movies & my uncle only loaned me his 3-in-1 version when i was 10. i don’t know what to say don’t ever talk to me about boromir don’t ever talk to me about gimli and legolas don’t EVER talk to me about sam or frodo. unless you are prepared for a sleeping-beauty type situation where you blink and your kingdom has fallen into darkness bc i’ve been talking for 35 years. 

i LOVE the movie Arrival: linguistics & aliens, non-linearity of the narrative. CHOMP CHOMP CHOMP. it’s the good tasty stuff. also mood when she arrives to teach & there are like 4 people and she’s like ‘hmm. okay.’ that’s every day of my life teaching obscure bs. i also kind of want her house. badly. and LISTEN the short story is also good but i rlly like the weird feral energy she had going on in the movie. sign me up so fast for a deranged woman in stem. (she’s in linguistics but let me have my joke. it’s basically math)

video games

mass effect: if you were here with me on tumblr in 2014 1. i’m sorry and 2. you know that liara t’soni is my wife and i’d die for her. these games gave me the most severe brainrot. no i cannot ever be mean to anyone ever but i do push that guy off the Dantius tower in ME2 because it’s funny. Aria t’Loak can [redacted] me if she wants. but yeaaaah. these games are amazing and i still genuinely burst into tears every time Leaving Earth comes on my playlist. there’s just something abt it. played the game on rec of my hot physics teacher. to nobody’s surprise. my favs are Liara (going to tell you humiliating anecdote now. one time i was talking loudly to my friend in my room while playing ME and i said ‘hey, that’s my girlfriend’ loudly and my mom burst in like !!!! YOU HAVE A GIRLFRIEND I WANT TO MEET HER. imagine her disappointment when it was a collection of pixels on my tv. she was like ‘…. cas. go outside.’) i also like Jack, Miranda (love a woman who is mean to me), WREX BOI, tali bc i want to smooch her helmet and because of that time she gets drunk it’s so funny. i like garrus too okay but my friend never shut up about him so i was sick of him in the same way she was sick of Brynjolf after the 500th time i said he could [redacted]. 

jak and daxter: aaaaahhh. the mild child neglect game. basically my mum got this when i was a toddler & one time got so engrossed trying to cross Fire Canyon she let me fall asleep in my walker. i was fine but my dad never let her or me or anyone forget about it. it’s his measure for how good things are. ‘oh, is it fall asleep in your walker good?’ i think i learned my motor skills playing this game. my hands were sucky clumsy bastards so actually it helped. i was bad at it for so long but now i can 100% the game without dying once in about 3 hours. not speedrun territory but still. it’s just!!! visually incredible. the story is so funny. whatever gender Jak has i want. Daxter was my comedic role-model so you can see how that turned out for me. it’s totally worth watching Jak & Daxter (the whole trilogy) on YT or playing it. the games of all time to me. the kind of fantasy worlds i create are still massively influenced by this. also Jak didn’t speak for the first game so he was autism rep to me as a kid even tho i had only bouts of being non-verbal & other times never shutting tf up. 

ratchet & clank: same vein as jak & daxter. made by naughty dog who yes also made TLOU. so funny, so visually stunning. A Crack in Time is the best game come and fight me. but also LOVED Rift Apart bc one character had a prosthetic limb & she was rlly rlly cool. idk the sci-fi world in Ratchet and Clank is basically a shitpost but it’s also so gorgeous and so fun and makes no sense but (Daniel Craig voice) compels me though. i love the second and third games also and ALSO tools of destruction. HAS AMAZING MUSIC. such bopping. best track is probably novalis imo. 

horion zero dawn: this is more recent. drives me insane. there are kind of mechanical dinosaurs and you have a bow and arrow and you fight them and Aloy is so sarcastic and so clever and so (looks into the camera like she’s on the office) about everything. it’s an amazing world & i love her little found family and the BIG ‘go the fuck to sleep’ energy she has. so stubborn love that for her. 

pokemon: like i said. neighbour wanted to play GTA on PS2 without traumatising me so gave me his red gameboy and pokemon gold. then i learned to read. got sapphire for my 7th christmas + the GameBoy Advanced SP. got every game since then & I JUST LOVE POKEMON. it’s THE autism game (sorry stardew. sucks to suck) you collect little guys and you battle and you walk around and you shiny hunt and there are like 900 different pokemon now. i mean we all know pokemon anyway but yeah i was obsessed my whole life. wanted to be ash ketchum i love his attitude imo he’s a very ava silva character and i like how he says “i like carrots and peppers and bugs” he’s so valid for that.

skyrim: hehehehe. 2011. got this for christmas based on the cinematic trailer (god’s strongest soldier i am not) and was so scared of the draugr i emerged out of my room at 3am on st-stephen’s day in a pose like i was holding a greatsword WIHOUT REALISING i was doing it. i git good at the game tho & learned to mod. aaaaahhhh it’s one of my fav worlds to get lost in. my mum sent me this text when i texted her a pic of the official skyrim guidebook

Remaining fearful and complacent in the face of injustice won’t always protect you from its effects

Best Features

Sophia and Constance are well-characterized protagonists. They are effective but not overpowered. They have positive traits and likeability but are not perfect. They have agency and their motives make sense given their circumstances.

The sapphic love triangle was well-executed. It features opposites attract vs. birds of a feather and childhood friend romance vs. a newer attraction to a person you just naturally click with. Both romances were believable and showed different sides of the heroine.

The exposition about how the Cinderella system worked and its impact on society was described in great detail while also being well woven into the narrative. It never felt like the story halted to explain anything.

King Manford is an effectively hateable villain with the qualities needed in an antagonist from a fairytale and dystopian story like this one. He’s pretty one-dimensional but not without a few surprises.

Worst/Least Appealing Features

The main heroines are pretty static personality-wise. Their personalities are set in stone from the start and don’t change much. If you’re fine with flat character arcs then it’s no big deal.

The pacing is uneven. Plot progression was either extended periods of action sequences or extended periods of planning and debating the next moves. It was hard to maintain interest in what was going on during the planning periods after so much excitement beforehand.

The supporting cast has little involvement in the plot. They deepen Sophia’s understanding of the world and add depth to its themes and that’s about it.

The world wasn’t very interesting. If I were asked to recall anything distinctive about the city of Lille or the White Wood or anywhere else except the palace I wouldn’t be able to. The descriptions are incredibly threadbare and the locations leave no impression.

Final Fantasy: It was better in 2D

One of the things I hate most about the Final Fantasy 7 franchise is the art. They just can’t get it right. The original game had the worst CGI even for its time especially considering Rare made the beaty that is Donkey Kong which was on SNES. Final Fantasy 7 was on the original Playstation. They could have done better...

And even the spin offs, CGI movie and recent remake are honestly not nice to look at either. For example, the men look like girls or underage boys. And when they do look like men or at least masculine, they’re always ugly. This is not only visually disappointing it looks wrong. I have nothing against feminine men, but masculine men are good looking too. Masculinity is beautiful including physically. Also, the women don’t look any better. They look cookie cutter and underage too. I can’t even blame taking realism too far on this one because it they don’t even look realistic.

This is not. This looks plastic like a doll. I don’t enjoy looking at it for long periods of time.

Either go realistic or cartoonish. You can’t do both. It just doesn’t work. And to be very frank, in the case of Final Fantasy 7, maybe they should cease and desist going with CGI altogether and go with 2D style which can have a 3D effect when done right. I mean, look at Xenogears. And make the cutscenes 2D with a nice smooth 3D feel because the art of Final Fantasy 7 in 2D was amazing even when it first launched. I mean, just LOOK AT THIS. Sephiroth looks like a man and his two protruding locks in front are iconic. Plus, he looks intimidating which is the point of the guy.

This, I don’t like. The edges have been shaven off, his face is too feminine, his muscle mass looks reduced, his two locks are now limp, and making his roots dark looks awkward. He doesn’t look badass to me. He doesn’t even look like Sephiroth. He looks like a guy trying to cosplay as Sephiroth. Pardon me if that sounds mean, but I cannot lie.

It also drives home my point that some styles, characters and effects do NOT translate well into 3D. I think the Final Fantasy’s art was at its best when it was 2D. There were a lot of flaws with Final Fantasy 7 and I think the biggest one is that Final Fantasy just wasn’t meant to be CGI like the Megaman franchise. They tried CGI, it didn’t work and they moved on.

Final Fantasy 7 has NO excuse to keep beating the dead horse. I don’t want plastic, stiff, castrated looking CGI. I want emotive, smooth, fun, warm 2D with the cartoony look and all back. This is also why I have no interest in playing the Final Fantasy 7 remake even if I had time.

I apologize in advance, but I am not only not enticed I’m actually repulsed, and I cannot enjoy a game that is too ugly to look at.

Anyway, thanks for reading. If you like the art of Final Fantasy which includes the remake of 7, I respect your taste.

REAL LIFE X FANTASY COUPLE: TBS X READER RATING: DARK + SWEET

I sat, beyond nervous. The only sound I could hear was the echo of my own breath. Every so often you would hear someone hurl or worse but I did my best not to think about it. Just hold on. Just till dawn. It couldn't be real. It wouldn't be serious. They surely wouldn't just March us off to certain death like that. Then again I had been extremely lucky to even still be alive now I watched the sunrise and I felt better. My stomach calmed down and I breathed it wasn't true. No attack this morning. I left my post changing over with the next boy on watch as I headed into the barracks grabbing myself some coffee and going to my tent to try and get a five minute lay down. I think I caught a little bit of sleep but honestly, I wasn't sure how much I actually got. As I was woken up violently by screaming and shouting from outside the tent I bolted up and headed outside, they had attached everywhere where broken bodies, burnt tents, horses riding up and down trampling over any who stood in their way. There were few left still alive to fight them I grabbed a half-broken sword from a fallen man and ran out in an attempt to face them but one of their horses knocked me over 

“Boys. Looks like we found it” He smirked as he stopped the other men gathering around him “The last one standing.” He smirked gutting a man he held by the neck he was right with him now dieing I was the last one alive “You're coming with us boy” 

I did try to resist them but they were all much stronger than me. They chained my hands and my neck keeping me in an old muck filled horse carriage any time they stopped. I would be lucky if one of them gave me any water at all, or threw me crumbs and bits of mouldy bread and crackers. I began losing track of days we had been travelling it didn’t help when we did stop at places I was often questioned, tortured over and over as they tried to force me to give them answers I didn’t have. I told them over and over the role, I played in the castle but they were convinced I knew more than I did. By the time we reached their castle, I wanted to die. I was starved abused and knowing it would only worsen now I’d be confined to a dungeon to be tortured and mutilated until I starve to death. I was thrown on the stone floor of the main room of the castle 

“Daddy!” a voice smiled excitedly I looked and saw a young girl jump to the commander giving him a hug she looked about my age if a little younger I admit she was beautiful 

“Awww hello princess” “I missed you”

“I missed you too darling. Well, no need to worry daddy’s home now” He says

“Did you bring me a present?” she giggled 

“Ohh. damn. I’m sorry darling I forgot to get you a present. We were so busy with everything I’m sorry I’ll get you a nice present soon okay” he told her 

“What’s he doing here?” she asks looking at me 

“Him? Ohh he’s just a prisoner nothing to worry about princess” 

“He’s pretty” she smiled coming down and stroking my hair 

“You like him, princess?” “I think he’s cute” she smiled 

“Well, as I forgot to get you a present. If you like, you can have him as your present?”

“Can I daddy?”

“Of course, you can princess.” He smiled, giving her a key “Go on, take him to your room. He can be your little pet. Any trouble you call okay?”

“I will daddy” she smiled taking my chain “come on little pet” she giggled tugging the chain along gently 

“Go on. You hurt my little princess. You'll wish for death, you hear me?”

“Yes” I nodded doing my best to get the words out given how weak I was 

“Come on little pet let's go upstairs” she giggled tugging me along with her.

Life in the Fae realm is peaceful, far removed from all the struggles of the human world. You've never been to that horrendous place, where misery befalls the kind and hatred plague the streets, but you've heard harrowing tales from your grandmother, who fled the persecution of her species—and from those stories you were convinced there was no better place in the universe than your safe haven, and nothing good could ever come out of the human world.

Well, that was before you met Nik Ryder.

Technically, it was before you met Nik Ryder, and also a little bit after, too. It certainly didn't help the redemption of humans that immediately following his arrival, a bloodwraith flew through the magical barrier and killed the king.

but you had seen Nik Ryder a few times around, accompanied by a young human (or so you thought—you would learn later they were actually the King's child) and though you forced yourself to stop, you couldn't help the crimson bud of jealousy from spreading inside your chest at the proximity they shared. after all, who were you to compete with the heir to the Fae realm — you, a florist girl who lived in a simple gabled house on the marketplace!

but even through your heartache, you didn't need to force any smile when one very disoriented-looking Nik Ryder showed up at your flower stall, early one morning, constantly looking over his shoulder as if he were being tailed by something - or someone. he was handsome and charming, so different from all the other Fae men, in an intoxicating way, and you somewhat zoned out as he spoke, but returned to your body at once when he mentioned wanting a bouquet to "apologize to a friend". because he screwed up big time, you know? and he needed to make it right, because they were pissed at him, and normally he would've ignored it, but not this time. so if you have any flowers that say, "I'm sorry", or the like? please. And you guess pretty easily that these flowers are intended to his friend, and you keep the professional tone as you ask him what colors he had in mind, but you can feel your heart rupture. He's a bit awkward, and asks what your favorite color is — and before you know it the focus of the conversation has shifted to you, your likes and dislikes and if you'll be, perhaps, attending the ball thrown by their majesties (is it how you should refer to them?) at the end of the week? You laugh at the idea, because why would you be attending a royal ball! and he laughs, too, and excuses himself for being so thoughtless.

The next morning, he drops by your stall, once again. "You won't believe this, but I've pissed off another friend," he jokes, and you laugh, wondering who this curious character really is. And the following morning he comes again. And the next. And every morning until the ball, just to chat with you and spend time together. One time you even catch his half-human friend eyeing you from a distance, a teasing smile resting on their lips, and you wonder if you did not invent the nature of their relationship entirely. because he prefers spending time with you, that much is clear. for an obscure reason, but you don't question it...

but then the ball happened, and all hells broke lose. And Nik disappeared, back to his world as quickly as he had come. You were shattered—you believed wholeheartedly that this was the start of a beautiful story, that you were finally getting the love you dreamed of. To be ripped of it so suddenly? It was torture.

Maybe it was the time you challenged all your beliefs, and paid the human realm a visit... if Nik was in danger, and your Fae powers could help him, you would sacrifice it all in a heartbeat. Maybe it was time to face off a bloodwraith.
