Fic Writer Intro--MissDavis

I just got back from @ficwritersretreat2019, where we talked about ways to support and promote other fic writers. One idea was to write introductory posts for ourselves, then reblog each others’ posts to spread the word to all our followers. Below I have tagged the other writers who went to this year’s retreat, but even if you’ve never been, feel free to introduce yourself and your own writing. If you tag me, I'll reblog your post, too!

I’m MissDavis and I've been writing BBC Sherlock fic since shortly after s3. Most of my work is Johnlock with some occasional Johnlockary thrown in for good measure. Here’s the link to all of my writing. If you’re looking for something specific, here’s a breakdown by ship and length, along with summaries from AO3:

Johnlock:

Long fics (50-100+K):

Breakable rated E After John is seriously injured, Sherlock struggles to figure out how to help him, keep himself sane, and maybe, just maybe, get their life back to the way it’s supposed to be. Part 1 of the Breakable Not Broken series.

Full Court Press rated E College basketball AU: Sherlock is the team’s best shooter. John is the team’s best ball-handler.

Side Effects rated E WIP, currently 10/17 chapters now complete! Sequel to Breakable. Life is a lot better for Sherlock and John than it was a year ago. Yes, John still can't walk and Sherlock is still on antidepressants, but they're married now, and almost everything else is back to their version of normal. They have a dog. Sherlock's solving cases again. But when Moriarty learns of their marriage, he escapes from prison and takes it upon himself to make their lives miserable. Is Sherlock really up to the challenge of catching a criminal whose only goal is to make sure that he and John don't live happily ever after?

If You Lead Me rated M Enough time has passed since Mary’s death that John is finally ready to start a new relationship. With Sherlock, he hopes. But given Sherlock’s stated aversion to romantic entanglements, John is a bit worried about being rejected, and doesn’t know how to proceed. Fortunately, there’s someone who can help him along.

Sherlock Is Actually a Cat Person rated E John brings home a kitten. Sherlock is not okay with it.

The Last Time Alone rated E But it wasn’t enough, not for John. He needed more. He needed someone to hold besides a child, and someone to kiss on the lips and not just the top of the head. He needed sly looks across the dinner table and to know if he put Rosie to bed early he might emerge from her room to find a candle lit and dessert served just for two.

The One Where No One Proposes rated G Sherlock inherits his parents’ wedding rings. It’s ridiculous that they mean something to him. He doesn’t plan to do anything with them. Sentiment.

Equal Footing rated E Sherlock had certainly never shown any interest in women’s footwear, or in seeing John appear as anything but fully male. But five extra inches—that opened up all sorts of interesting possibilities.

Dirty Laundry rated E If they got far enough along, John knew he would stop noticing the steady clanking thump of the washer, but so far he’d been unable to keep himself from being distracted.

Could Be Fun 36K words, rated E This is the first fic I started writing when I got into the Sherlock fandom. John, Sherlock and Mary embark on a new stage of their relationship. Nine chapters of smut and snark, canon-compliant through series 3.

The Life We Choose 16K words, rated M Based on the "30 Days of Sherlock Challenge,” a series of ficlets from the points of view of Sherlock, John, Mary, and, of course, Alice Watson: I have three parents. That’s Sherlock.” He gave her a smile that was even more forced than the one Sherlock had just displayed. “It’s funny. I’d almost forgotten what he sounded like.”

Not in the Job Description 1,505 words, rated E, Sherlock/Sally. The case has Sherlock stumped, and John’s not around to help him focus. Someone has to step up and help him clear his mind.

Once He Is Gone 1K words, rated T, Gen. John is fine at Sherlock’s funeral. Of course he is. Why wouldn’t he be? He’s been to funerals for so many of his friends. Why would Sherlock’s be any different?

Love at First Like by Hannah Orenstein

Okay, so to preface this review I feel like I need to say that I don’t typically rate romance novels highly. Not because I believe that they aren’t deserving of high ratings but more often than not there is some problematic element that I just don’t jive with. That being said, this book definitely had a problematic element to it but it was dealt with in such a way that enhanced the characters and their development instead of being problematic for the sake of shock value.

Also, just a warning that I had a LOT of thoughts on this book so the review is quite lengthy. I’ll put little headers on each paragraph so if you’re only interested in thoughts on certain aspects you can scroll down and find them easily.

Summary

“Love at First Like” by Hannah Orenstein, is about Eliza, a 20-something jewellery store owner in New York who sells happily ever afters but can’t seem to find her own. One night after a train wreck of a first date she scrolls through Instagram and finds out that her ex-boyfriend, who said he wasn’t the type to settle down, has gotten engaged. Eliza does what everyone does after finding out their ex has moved on, she gets drunk. After drinking through the better part of a bottle of whiskey Eliza thinks it’s a good idea to go into the jewellery store, she co-owns with her sister and take pictures of engagement rings on her finger.

The next morning, she realises that in her drunkenness she accidentally posted one of the photos on Instagram and her 100K followers now believe that she’s engaged. Her first instinct is to take the photo down but after seeing the influx of sales, at a time when the business sorely needs them, she decides to milk it a little longer. With so many questions surrounding who she’s engaged to and no man in sight, Eliza and her best friend Carmen, decide to hold an audition of sorts for someone to play the groom-to-be. The audition turns out to be a complete bust but shortly after Eliza meets Blake. Blake is everything a girl like Eliza wants, he’s attractive, charming, and he owns a men’s luxury watch company; they’re a match made in heaven. They start dating because this is someone who Eliza can really see herself settling down with, but she hasn’t told him that she’s fake engaged, or that she’s planning to stage a fake wedding to drum up even more sales for her business. Throughout the book Eliza struggles with whether to tell Blake the truth, or risk losing him for good.

Eliza

When I first picked up this book it was in one of those 3 for £10 sales and I needed a third. The premise sounded ridiculous and unrealistic and I thought it would just be an easy read that I rolled my eyes at, like most chick-lit. I was so pleasantly surprised by this book. I thought this was going to be a 1/5 but somehow, I’m giving it a gold star and a 5 out of fucking 5.

The main character, Eliza, is not someone I totally relate to, in fact her impulsivity is one of the qualities I hate most in anyone. As a dedicated planner and organiser, it’s one of my biggest pet peeves, but despite that I actually really liked Eliza’s character. Her bad/irresponsible choices in the beginning mostly just seem like a way to get the plot moving but I can still see how her character got to the place to make those choices. We’re given just enough backstory to understand how much her jewellery store, Brooklyn Jewels, means to her and how she would do anything to keep it from going under. Which is why when sales go up after the accidental engagement photo, I totally understand why she didn’t delete it, even if I don’t agree with it.

Secondary Characters/Friendships

I also absolutely loved that side characters like Carmen, Sophie and Raj all got to be real, fleshed out characters. Often, I find that secondary characters, in romance especially, don’t really get to have arcs or personalities other than whatever stereotype or trope they’re based on. Carmen in particular I thought was really well done. When we’re first introduced to her I thought she was just going to be a fun BFF that serves up one-liners to get laughs. Yes, Carmen can be a funny character at times, but that’s not who she is. Despite us only having small glimpses into this character, as we only see her through Eliza, Orenstein uses Eliza’s history with Carmen to show us how she’s evolved over the years in her career goals particularly. The second encounter we have with Carmen is almost entirely centred on her and her idea of an app that she wants to launch, where Eliza intones that previously “[Carmen] said she’d rather do excellent work for a company and collect a steady paycheck. [Eliza] never thought she'd strike out on her own.” (60) The rest of this encounter is spent with Eliza offering to provide business advice and support to Carmen as she knows how hard starting a business can be.

I absolutely adore Eliza and Carmen’s friendship because it doesn’t revolve around Eliza and her boy trouble. Their friendship is a two-way street where they lift each other up when they doubt themselves, like when Carmen was nervous about making a presentation to investors and Eliza went through it with her until she’d perfected it. And they ground each other when they’re becoming too idealistic, like when Eliza keeps stringing Blake along and Carmen reminds Eliza that he’s a person with real feelings who doesn’t deserve to be played with. Their friendship is so authentic and true to real life experience that I honestly want another book about just the two of them living it up in NYC.

Eliza as a friend in general, I found was quite refreshing. In a lot of romance the heroine tends to be quite selfish and shitty towards their friends, if they have any at all, but Eliza hit the perfect balance of caring for her friends and caring for herself; not being a martyr, but also not being greedy. I loved how excited she got about her friends lives and achievements, and how when she saw that Raj, a web engineer, was bar-tending between gigs she hooked him up with Carmen who was in need of exactly what he had to offer. I also like how it was mentioned that Carmen paid Raj because I think sometimes things like that get reduced to a friend doing another friend a favour, instead of the fact that Raj is a trained professional and deserves to be paid for his time and expertise.

Sophie

However, someone who did not deserve to get paid, was fucking Sophie. Let me clarify, Sophie deserved to be paid for the work she did at Brooklyn Jewels, but she did NOT deserve a $15K bonus right as their business was going through a tough time financially. This made me unreasonably angry, I had a full freaking meltdown because it was so ridiculous to me that she would even ask and even more so that Eliza said YES. Sophie needed the money to go through IVF treatments because she and her wife wanted to have a baby, fair enough. I personally don’t believe in going through that kind of treatment when there are so many kids in the world without families but whatever, to each their own. But what really irked me was the fact that Sophie, who is in her early thirties, had already attempted this method of conception and it didn’t work. So, she was willing to take a gamble with money that was greatly needed to help keep their business afloat because she couldn’t just wait a fucking year or two. Not to mention the fact that if she did get pregnant and has this baby only for her business to fail, then she wouldn’t have a steady income, health insurance, maternity pay and she would have also screwed her sister out of her dream. Luckily everything works out for the best, Sophie gets pregnant and Eliza saves Brooklyn Jewels, but it so very easily could have destroyed multiple lives. The fact that Sophie is meant to be perceived as the ‘responsible’ sister astounds me. When Eliza was trying to save their business by offering solutions Sophie kept shooting every idea down and her only contribution to that conversation was that she wanted to fire their only employee who got paid shit-all anyway. Honestly, I could write a fucking essay on why I hated Sophie but I guess I’ll settle for a really long paragraph.

Love Interests

The problematic element in this book was definitely the ridiculously elaborate plot for Eliza to lure Blake into marriage to cover her fuck-up. As I was reading I marked three places where Eliza could have told Blake the truth in an organic way so that it wasn’t just like she was dropping a bomb on him. Despite my frustration with Eliza, her internal monologue again, made me understand why she wasn’t doing things how I wanted her to. Although, even though I understand her reasoning, it still doesn’t make what she did to Blake right, and I absolutely love how he couldn’t trust her again and that they didn’t get back together. I hate the ‘love concurs all’ trope and I’m glad that the author showed how Blake, who was clearly way more in love with Eliza than vice versa, couldn’t get past the fact that she used and lied to him. Part of me wishes that was how the romance in this book ended, with no happily ever after, maybe Raj pretending to be her fiancé to save Brooklyn Jewels, but no happy couple at the end.

The other part of me feels all warm and fuzzy because Raj and Eliza are unbelievably cute together. Orenstein could have fucked this romance up so hard, especially because it comes in so late in the story and Eliza was (kind of) on the rebound. But she takes the readers thoughts of, ‘Did Eliza really not notice her feelings for Raj until now?’ and ‘Is Raj just second place because Blake dumped her?’ and turns them into questions Raj uses to stand up for himself. Raj has clearly liked Eliza since they first met and I loved that he was willing to fight for what he believed he deserved. Raj and Eliza have such great chemistry as characters, but they were ultimately their own people who made their own choices, even after getting together. The way Orenstein wrote both Blake and Raj was a breath of fresh air. To see two male characters not being aggressive, but still standing up for themselves and not blindly bowing down to what the female love interest wanted, was something I don’t think I’ve ever read before. I think that comes from the fact that yes, Eliza is the heroine of this story but it’s not just about her. Like, I could tell while reading from Eliza’s point of view that there were other things going on in this world that just didn’t include her. So, while she was our main character, she wasn’t the main character of the world she was living in.

Representation

One of the things I loved most about this book was the casual representation. This was the truest to life representation I’ve seen in a romance novel thus far. Orenstein doesn’t make a big deal about her minority characters because they’re not minority characters, they’re characters who happen to be minorities. This book isn’t about race or LGBTQ+ rights so there’s no real need to dwell on those things, but she does acknowledge those parts of her characters in small ways throughout. This is how more fiction should be, because the more we normalize diversity in the media we consume, the less we’ll think of minority groups as ‘other’ (or so I hope).

Rating

Ultimately this book was not perfect. I definitely had problems with it (mostly named Sophie) but it was a fun read from beginning to end with some thought provoking themes which will stick with me for a while yet. Honestly, this book could have been complete garbage, but Orenstein’s writing and character development made me connect to almost every character (except for Sophie of course). I can’t wait to read her other works. 5/5. Brava!

Exit Interview for a Fic (AKA: 10 Questions Every Fic Writer Secretly Wants to be Asked)

I started doing this list of questions every time I finish a ‘major’ fic. I’ve been putting together an updated fic list and realized I hadn’t ever done it for It’s About Time. So here we go!

1. Of the fics you’ve written, which is your favorite and why? At this point I’d have a really hard time picking between the still unposted (and unfinished) TwinSwap and the Dragon!Barry story. (The dragon AU has a lot more to it that I’ll hopefully get to eventually. There’s a few twists I adore with that one.)

I really, really, really love both of those. I’m also, obviously, really keen on the whole Barry POV canon compliant story and the hanahaki story, Chrysanthemums (Lovesick). And I’m still pretty proud of Like Friendship Set Aflame. (FYI that last one is rated Explicit.) Plus, Losing Time is still something I feel good about.

2. Which scene was your favorite to write in It’s About Time? The scenes of Barry and Lup pining for one another are always fun of course but writing them together and in love? It’s just so good. I think my favorite to write was chapter 44. I started that first scene with no specific goal and it all just kind of organically evolved into what it did and where it all led and it just felt like it fit together well. And they were just so damn happy and absolutely gooey in love. Legato was obviously pretty good, too, but there was a lot of stress writing it because obviously it’s a Big Deal and needed to be Really Good.

(Putting the rest under a readmore because this is very long and self indulgent.)

3. Which part of It’s About Time was hardest to write? I struggled a few times. One of the hardest was chapter 34. I had a plan, there were story beats I was trying to hit and an overall arc to their relationship that called for things to go a certain way. But they just wouldn’t. I wrote and scrapped thousands of words trying to get there and finally realized the option I’d been too blind to see. Changing my plan meant a lot of other things had to be changed and created a lot of other hard to write parts but it also helped with the characterization for Barry and the change and growth he was going through.

4. If you could change anything in It’s About Time, what would it be? I kinda wish it wasn’t over? Like, don’t get me wrong. I’m excited to be on the part of the story I’m telling now - the part that initially drew me to even telling the story? But, holy crap, I miss Lup. I miss the crew and happiness. This is a long slog through dark times and if ever there was a time to say “Poor Barry” then this is it. I mean, I don’t think it’s all darkness? I think there’s surprises that make it worth it? (I really hope so! Like the appearance of certain characters in chapter 7 of Time After Time, for example.)

And to be honest? I miss the interest that story got. Views/comments/etc have severely fallen off and I’d be lying if I said it didn’t make it much much harder to motivate myself to work on it despite my determination to finish. (I get it though. It’s much more fun to read Blupjeans falling in love than Barry alone and kinda losing it.)

5. Did you make an outline for It’s About Time? Did you stick to it? Well, I mean, there’s the outline of the canon 11 cycles and that extrapolates out to giving the expanded story a specific set of story/character beats. As things got closer to Legato I had certain circumstances I wanted to hit in a certain order. So I guess yes, more than anything else I’ve written this had an outline. It wasn’t exceedingly thorough but it was definitely my game plan for things and yeah, several times that had to be scrapped like I mentioned about chapter 34 in question 3.

6. Which scenes did you cut, and which were added in It’s About Time? The scene of Barry cooking for the crew - specifically for the twins - wasn’t supposed to be in his POV. It was in Lup’s POV and I didn’t think it worked for his but then I couldn’t let it go so I just kinda... did it anyway.

I remember that snow cycle went on for much longer than intended, too. I’m really glad though, it got me away from the one cycle/one chapter format which helped me feel more relaxed about telling the story how it worked out rather than forcing things to fit certain ways.

There were definitely things that were cut but always because the scenes just weren’t working the way I thought they would during planning.

7. Who was your favorite character to write in A Thousand Tiny Moments? It’s Barry’s POV and I feel like I have a pretty strong grasp of him at this point. Gheesan and Selba were a lot of fun to write. Probably my still favorite OC is Embrace, though. One day I want to get art of Barry and Embrace, the big golden mongoose from cycle one.

Okay, this is maybe a weird answer since he’s not exactly a character? But I enjoyed writing my take on Griffin’s narration that opened chapter 36.

8. Which came first, the title or the fic? For a long time this was just called “the fic I’m not gonna write” because I’d never really jumped hard into writing fanfic before. Previous to starting this thing I’d only written a couple of 1k-ish minifics for a different fandom and only written something over 10k ... a handful of times.

9. Which idea came to you first in It’s About Time? It’s a little tricky answering this question because, even though it’s split up between Stolen Century and then the rest of the podcast timeline being in Time After Time, I tend to think of them all as one piece - Barry’s story.

I think the part that hit me first was thinking about Barry in Taako’s pocket spa and what kind of things would be running through his mind.

In this very first consideration of his POV, I’d forgotten he wouldn’t have memories yet. So then I backed it up to that night between Wonderland and his cave/getting back in a body. What all must he have been thinking while they slept? After so long to be so close to the end and then have to get in a body and relinquish any semblance of control to the boys and his memoryless body? Honestly, I find that idea terrifying. From there it just kept spinning out to considering different bits of canon from his point of view. I don’t remember what the point was that finally convinced me to start writing but I’m still surprised it happened after so long of not really being a fic writer.

10. What are some facts readers may not know about It’s About Time? The first thing I wrote for this fic was Contradictions, the so called test minific. Then I got obsessed. I wrote pages of notes, picking out details that were relevant to Barry’s story and thinking and enormous lists of questions about what was going on with him or in his head at certain points. I spent literal days thinking about how to account for things inferred from canon. For example, why didn’t Barry remember things between bodies? When did he get the boys’ artificing projects that he gives them after reunion tour?

Then I started writing longhand in notebooks. I started out writing where Contradictions left off: Barry’s trip out of the gerblin cave with THB and arriving in Phandalin. For a while I thought that’s what the fic would be: just Barry’s time from that wagon ride to Phandalin and ending with him getting into the tank as his last moments as ‘the red robe’ before revealing himself as Barry Bluejeans again.

Eventually I realized that I needed to include Stolen Century and decided to start from the chronological beginning of the story. I’d written the entire century (albeit much, much shorter in this first draft - there was nothing between Tessaralia and Legato, for example - and then probably 15k of stuff directly following the defeat of the Hunger - that night and the following morning, as well as the first part of the Faerun things, Frank Texican’s part that is chapters 8 & 9 of Time After Time, and parts that still haven’t posted in Time After Time, including that section I’ve mentioned several times as the bit I’m MOST excited to share.

After that it still took me weeks to decide to start posting and then another few weeks to decide to start posting Stolen Century and tell the story in order. I kind of wish I hadn’t done that just because it’d be nice to see them falling in love after all the awful alone and voidfished time but it’s good to have it done this way and have specific memories and all the characterization solidly built in order.

Race recap time!

I woke up at 5am on race morning feeling pretty awake, I surprisingly had slept quite well! I had a quick breakfast (bagel with PB, banana, and honey plus 2 energy nuun tablets) and even pooped twice before I left for the bus, so things were off to a really great start 😏 and then I got to the green line and realized the train hadn’t started running yet, so me and about 40 other runners had to wait 20 minutes for the first train to arrive -_- the good news is that I ran into a girl that I ran XC with as an undergrad and we chatted to pass the time. I was a little frazzled by the time I got to Grant Park, because it was about 15 minutes later than I had intended to arrive. I still had time to hop in the port-a-potty line (pooped again lol), check my gear (I cried a bit because they turned on Buckingham Fountain right as I got there to check my gear!), then wait in the port-o-potty line again. Made it into my starting corral at 7:15, then shuffled around nervously until 7:30 when the race began. I cried again when the announcer said “The 40th running of the Chicago Marathon is now underway!”, and then had plenty of time to stop crying before crossing the starting line around 7:45 am.

I was feeling really really great when the race finally started, except that I kind of had to pee again already. Like a typical rookie, I started off way too fast. I was planning to run even 9:00 splits for the whole race, but instead hit the mile 1 marker in 8:18. I tried to slow down, but my garmin wasn’t working very well (because of all the tall buildings, plus we were underground for a bit) so I apparently didn’t actually slow down at all. Hit the 5K mark at 25:57 (8:21 pace). I made a quick stop at the next aid station to use the bathroom and then continued on at a still too fast pace. Hit the 10K mark at 53:04, meaning that 5K was at a more modest 8:44 pace, but of course that is with a ~1 min bathroom stop averaged in. Still way too fast. At this point I decided to stop worrying about my pace, because obviously all my stressing about slowing down was not doing any good. I had so much fun in the first 12 or so miles, reading all the different race signs people had and giving high fives to everyone who wanted one! I also saw dad and Manny near mile 4 and again near mile 11, which made for some good photo ops haha. My 15K split was 1:19:39, then 1:46:26 for the 20K. Made it to the half in 1:52:18, which is actually my third fastest half marathon time! I still was feeling good all the way through mile 17, and maintained an 8:20-8:40 pace the whole way. I noticed my legs were starting to feel pretty tired at that point, and my hamstrings started cramping up pretty badly. I stopped briefly to try massaging them, but that only made things worse so I just kept going instead. I also realized then that I had a giant blister on the ball of my right foot (not quite sure when it developed), and I could feel the fluid inside it squishing around with every step. Finished mile 18 in 8:45, then decided I would have to start taking a few walking breaks if I wanted to be able to finish the race. I don’t really remember much from that point on. For miles 18 through 25, I walked through all the water portions of the aid stations (5 in all, I believe) and then ran the rest of the time. Mile splits were in the 9:05-10:00 range for 19-22. I saw Manny and dad again right before the mile 23 marker, stopped for a bit, and apparently told them I wanted to die so that then I could at least stop running lol. Between this stop and walking through another aid station, mile 23 was my slowest of all, 10:39. I don’t remember anything from miles 24 and 25, even the part where we ran through my school’s campus, and the splits were 9:44 and 10:01. I do vaguely remember telling myself out loud “you have to start running again” after the aid station in mile 25, then crying because I really didn’t want to (but I did anyways). The mile 25 marker was one of the most beautiful things I had ever seen, because I knew that meant I was almost done! I woke up mentally and checked my watch, then realized if I didn’t take any more walk breaks I would finish under 3:55 (which was my super stretch goal!). I dug deep and somehow found another gear for the last little bit. Finished mile 26 in 8:42, which included the giant hill at Roosevelt 400m from the finish line. Finally we turned the corner and I could actually see the finish line! I sprinted (ish) the last 200m just to be sure that I would finish under 3:55, and also because I was so ready to be done running. I even briefly saw a 7:XX pace on my watch before crossing the finish line! I felt so relieved to be done, and so proud of myself for all that I had accomplished, that I immediately started sobbing! Except I was so dehydrated that only two actual tears came out, though I had an ugly cry face on for at least 5 minutes haha.

The worst part of the entire race was that we had to walk for almost a whole mile before there was a spot we were allowed to sit down! The race volunteers were telling us to keep moving, but after a few minutes I just could not walk another step and sat down. They came over right away and told me I had to keep walking or they would have to take me to the medical tent, so got back up and walked another 300 feet and then sat down again. So they came back over and said the same thing and I got back up. This happened four times in all before I finally got to a grassy area where I could sit down! At this point my foot (where I had the blister) was absolutely throbbing and all the muscles in my legs were cramping up. I sat in the grass for about 20 minutes before I was finally able to get up, pick up my gear, and meet up with Manny and dad. Of course as soon as I met up with them, I told them I couldn’t wait to run again next year! It was a painful last few miles, but absolutely worth every step ❤️

Official finish time was 3:54:35, which was well under my goal of 4:00, and even faster than my most ambitious goal of 3:55! I can’t wait to run another marathon, now that I know what to expect, and do even better!

JOURNAL ENTRY VII

oops. i haven’t updated this series in 2 months... i’ve been busy? which is true, but also i got everything set up to work on this like a week ago and just kept putting it off b/c i’ve been working on v-day gifts for my family since februrary started. i suddenly had this flurry of activity in me to create, create, create! and writing is just not as an active a thing for me. i do miss it. i had meant to sleep in this morning a bit but ended up waking up and deciding i need to 1. write this and 2. when i am done w/ this, write my character’s feelings in regards to a not-so-stellar performance in last nights DND game-- none to which is own my teammates or DM i just literally couldn’t roll for shit. i had 2 rolls over almost 2 hr.s of play that were over a 10 (including modifiers)... but we are not here to talk of that.

we are here to talk of my progress.

As of my last weigh-in (2.12.20) i am sitting at 303lbs.

which i am pleased w/. 299 is in sight... and then i will treat myself w/o food, ha ha

i was sitting here the other day, just trying so hard to remember how much i weighed in high school. i remember the weight i told everyone i was. i told everyone(everyone being the school nurse and then the nurses at the blood donation center when i volunteered to give blood) i was 200lbs. i think senior year i realized that i was too far from 200lbs to be able to bullshit that and the last weight i remember telling someone was 230lbs and even then, i don’t think she believed me. i have some clothes sill from high school in my closet. stuff like concert shirts and stuff that had meaning, not just every random piece of clothing i wore or anything. but i am not sure i want to get them out and try them on. i know right now, that they will not fit. i think i will weight until the end of 2020 when i will be down to about 230lbs and try them on. i think that will really be the wake up call of “you are smaller than the clothes u wore in high school when u told everyone u were only 230lbs.”

idk, i’m still deciding.

in the meantime, i am just chugging away. i wanted to share my logs (which i don’t know why i hadn’t done until now...) for last month (januaray 2020):

i’m working on cleaning up my penmanship. i’ve always had atrocious handwriting. my brain works faster than my hand and this is what i’m left w/... -_-’

i was hoping to keep hitting the 10k/day steps and even set a goal to get up to 11k/day by the beginning of februrary but i just run out of time. i tried to incorporate jogging but it slowed me down. i had to rest longer between laps rather than just walk for 12 min.s/rest for 5 mins, it was like walk/jog for 10 min.s/rest for 10 min.s.

i’m just still not in-shape enough to get that in. but i do plan to try again in the future. i do want to get to a point where i can hit closer to 15k/day and i’m only going to be able to do that when running.

for now, i am only getting a little over 7 hr.s of sleep, working out for about 2 hr.s coming home, getting the kids ready for school, tues/thursdays i do about 30-40 min.s of yoga, take a shower, record everything, drink my breakfast and by then, wigs is home from school and i am back to taking care of the kids.

i am setting goals for the summer but in the meantime i am just giving it my all!

as for food, i am still aiming for about 1200 cals/day.

this is obviously from 2.14.20 and not january but it still shows a pretty average day. sometimes if i’m feeling peckish, there will be an additional 100 cal.s or so for my snack but otherwise, it looks like this every day. from my macros u can see i’m really taking in too much fats... :/ it is hard b/c i am targeting good fats: avocados, tree nuts, fish, etc. but that isn’t broken down as much by these apps. it doesn’t separate it out like HERE IS HOW MUCH GOOD FATS YOU ATE AND HOW MUCH BAD FATS YOU ATE. it just lumps then all together. so in a day i can have nothing but good oils: i.e. peanut butter protein power, fresh avocados, at snacktime a vegan protein bar and dinner will have a little olive oil to cook w/. but if you just glanced at this you’d be like “damn,,,, she must be eating a lot of fried foods!”

i’m not. really. i can barely tolerate fried foods. the other day i ate a few bites off a deep friend chicken tender and had a sour stomach the whole evening.

i am just focusing on healthy oils.

i’ve really dropped carbs for the most part. the only carbs i eat now are potatoes, white rice, popcorn and occasionally fresh tortillas. i do need more proteins in my diet but it is so hard to get more in there w/o adding sodium. it is a balancing act and even tho i’ve been doing this for 6 mon.s i’m still learning.

but-- i’ve got the rest of my life to figure this out. c:

i am so close to hitting the big

mark, i can barely contain myself. when i step on the scale for my last weigh-in for februrary, it will read 299 point something, and i will cry b/c for the first time in my adult life, i will be under 300 lbs AND i will have officially lost 50 pounds, marking myself 1/3 the way to my goal weight.

i can’t wait.

I was encouraged to post this after joking about it in the Amazon FBA $8k loss post. My story takes place back in 2005-2006 but I would imagine everything in it is still pretty relevant today.It was my first year out of college, I was living at home in Long Island while a friend and I were trying to come up with a business idea to avoid living the meme that is Office Space for the rest of our lives (we were both cubicle-based design engineers). I had a decent $60k + OT salary and my partner was finishing up his last year of college but he had a decent amount of savings from a small inheritance to contribute with. We had no debt or major expenses. We considered a lawn care business, pool cleaning, and eventually settled on the most expensive thing we could possibly pick - house flipping in LI, at the peak of the housing bubble.We started by looking at a lot of houses and after looking for an eternity of maybe 2 months, we settled on a house that we thought we could make bank on. It was a probate and we bid up against multiple bidders, settling at $385k on a 2Bd/2Ba where comps were going for $480-$500k with $13k in taxes/yr. We estimated it probably needed $30-40k worth of work and were planning on putting in sweat equity rather than paying out expensive contractors. We had our inspection done, got approved for way more than we should have ($400k @ 23 yrs old?!) and got to work.The house needed to be gutted. And I mean GUTTED with some uppercase letters. The yard was over grown, the patio was falling apart, the aluminum awning needed torn out (we actually sold this for scrap), the roof had to be replaced, the interior smelled of smoke which permeated the 3 layers of wall paper that we found in every room UNDER the wood paneling that covered it, the kitchen was straight from 1950, the breakers were those old circle types, the bathrooms were blue and pink, and the windows were aluminum framed garbage.We worked daily with 2 day laborers that my partner had worked with in the past. They were paid $100/day each and were worth every penny. They chose to work 10-12 hours a day, we never asked for more than 8 and often I was asking if they were ready to leave... My friend and I jumped in and helped wherever we could - though we were more effective in the demolition side of things. We had some fun, throwing old toilets off the roof into the dumpster and punching through drywall between studs before we ever knew the situation had a chance to not turn out well.The beginning was exciting and we were quite creative. I managed to replace all of our 16 windows for like $3500 by contacting a local manufacturer directly and representing myself as a reseller. My partner convinced his friends to help paint the house by hosting a keg party. I designed the kitchen in Ikea and learned to tile. We leveraged any connection we had to save money with every aspect of the flip, friends who were electricians upgraded the electrical panel to modern day 200amp service, and my landscaper buddy helped us clear out the yard. We used the HD credit card and got discounts on almost everything we purchased, and often purchased from the clearance section when possible. Craigslist was a great place to find used appliances in decent shape.Our laborers accomplished a ton, they tore down the aluminum siding and put up vinyl. They brought in a couple more guys to do the roof & also replaced 25 rotted 4'x8' pieces of plywood under the roof & fixed some trusses. They installed all of the windows I purchased, including 2 large bay windows. They sanded and poly'd the original wood floors. They laid a new patio in the back and a small brick porch in the front. Those guys were master carpenters and whenever I had an opportunity, I tried to learn what I could from them as they did different projects.And then the house was done. It took about 2-3 months over the summer to finish everything but we didn't just polish this turd, it actually looked pretty good! At this point, we probably had $40k invested and we knew we had to start working on getting it listed to unload it before we made too many more mortgage payments. So we put it on the market FSBO and I actually had a guy stop by that first week it was for sale who offered me $440k. I had recently read a book about negotiating and it said when someone makes an offer, don't respond, let them sweat while you think about it. I wish I never read that advice because I was dying to say "450 and its a deal" but I went against my gut and told him I'd get back to him after I spoke with my partner. I did speak with my partner and he said we should probably just take it and move on. We were hoping for $450k+ but $440k is close enough when you consider we wouldn't have to make more than another 1 or 2 mortgage payments. We probably would have come out very close to break even, maybe even have made a small profit, but he never returned my calls. And I called, a lot.We didn't get any other bites and we didn't know enough about advertising FSBO to really make it work. We also didn't have the same supporting websites that exist today outside of craigslist and the very beginnings of the biggerpockets forum. We couldn't just throw it on Zillow & Redfin, etc., we relied on signage and newspaper ads. Time wore on and then the school season started, and the housing bubble had just begun to burst. My partner managed to find someone to rent the home to for $500 or so a month less than what we were paying on the mortgage but if you remember the environment when the bubble did actually burst, it was better than trying to continue to list it. We were in a bad spot and I was working a lot of overtime to keep the mortgage going and the absurd taxes that started to hit us ($6500 semi-annual). I was making as much as I could and got paid straight time for OT which was barely enough to keep me out of bankruptcy. At this point I had a $20k credit card bill hanging over my head, my first and last experience with CC debt.After a year or so, our tenant was ready to move on and she let us show the house with her furniture in it to show it staged. We finally bit the bullet and get a real estate agent who was pretty hard core. This time we vetted the agent and she had a strategy for us to sell the house. We listed at $440k and within a couple of weeks had an offer for $415k. We both knew that there was nothing left to do other than take the loss and finally get out from under it. The buyer's inspection was done and we got some bad news - apparently a neighbor had been "taking care of" a 2 foot by 10 foot portion of our property that was on the other side of a fence for many years. The buyer's inspector noticed this and we found out there are some absurd laws in NY where the neighbor was able to make an ownership claim of that property because they had been taking care of it. If the inspector hadn't seen him mowing this part of the property that day, it would have never been an issue. We had to pay this neighbor $10,000 to get the property back. This was done through a real estate lawyer and exhausted all of our options before this. God damn this house was trying to take my soul.We finally made it to closing and if you thought I already went through the worst of this process, there was apparently one more bonus kick in the balls waiting for me: the guy who bought the house is the guy who offered me $440k a year prior. I shit you not.Lessons learned:We over bid. We wanted the house (or any house?) so badly we over paid to make sure we "won"We over leveraged with a mortgage we should not have been approved for (thanks Countrywide!!)We chose our real estate agent probably more based on her looks than her knowledge. I believe a better agent would have stopped us from choosing a 2 bed 2 bath project for our first flip. A 3 bedroom is way more marketable. Surround yourself with good people.Too big of a project. We should have started with a cosmetic flip, not something needed structural work.You can get mulch for "free" from the town. We only paid $15 to rent a home depot pick up truck.Renting the HD pickup was a life saver... used that 5 or 6 times over the life of the projectRenting tools is not a bad idea to save some cash if you don't think you'll use the same tool more than onceDesigning a kitchen was actually pretty easyGuys who own dumpster companies don't fuck around, if you don't pay on time they will literally dump your garbage out in your driveway... we paid before they did.Follow your gut, not some shitty advice you don't yet know is shitty that you got somewhere on the internet. I can't figure out how to properly phrase this, but at least if you fail when following your gut you have a known piece of yourself that you can work to adjust.CC bills are as most here probably know, the worst debt to have, avoid at all cost!If you get an offer that's pretty close to what you're looking for, take it and run, cash really is king.Due diligence is critical. Do not cheap out on the up front work of digging through potential issues that can cost you $10k in the wash. I probably could not have ever figured this out short of doing a survey and knowing real estate law and this was an expensive lesson.Partnerships are not for everyone. My partner and I were not on speaking terms for a while there for a variety of reasons. Our work ethics were different and some of our goals did not align well. Thankfully we were able to get our shit together and wrap things up before either of us went bankrupt.I don't have an exact figure for what my loss was on that project. It was definitely at least $40k, possibly closer to $50k. I sold my 1992 corvette for $15k to pay off a big chunk of my CC debt and I was not fully recovered for another year or two. Do I have any regrets? Sure, some. But honestly, I'm still glad I did it. I learned a lot, and the painful lessons I learned were burned into my brain where they've been called upon many times since. I haven't flipped a house since and I probably never will with where I am now in having a good career and stable life that really doesn't need that type of chaos again. I'm more likely to buy some houses as rentals and hire a property management company than put the type of hustle in needed to make a flip work and I'd like to continue investing in small businesses like I have been the past few years.One last thing to note: in my experiences, you will learn much, much more from your failures than your success. In that regard, failure is the key to success.TL;DR: Office space is a great movie.

HELP help help! Prego and no insurance

ok i applied for insurance (blue cross blue shield) right when i found out i was prego (I am 3 months now.)I told the salesman i was prego. He said he will get my cards out to me asap. 3 months passed and i was waiting for my cards. Then i spoke with some1 else i told them i need my cards cause im prego they said OH NO u can not apply while bein prego. Soo they denied me. WHAT DO I DO!! Medicaid wont accept me. Can i call another insurance company dont tell them im pregnant and when i get my insurance cards act like i just became pregnant. Please some1 help. I dont no what to do. SORRY FOR WRITING SO MUCH.
