So after having a thought about Pahkitew Island I’ve decided that it’s a flawed season and that maybe if people like this I’ll write a sort of rewrite/fanfiction of it. This post will be my ideas for what the rewritten characters would be like. So…I hope people like this
Beardo
-Is very introverted and has a hard time making friends.
-Makes videos on social media doing beatbox covers to songs he likes though he isn’t noticed much.
-Works as a DJ for parties. Is really good but he doesn’t feel like he’s doing enough.
-Before knowing he was joining Total Drama he originally thought he was going to be the DJ for some rich dude and took the job as a chance of notoriety.
-Craves friendship and notoriety more than anything and the one thing he plans on accomplishing while on the show is to make at least one friend.
Leonard
-Leonard loves LARPing! It’s essentially become a special interest for him and though he knows the whole thing isn’t real he still tries immersing himself in that fantasy aesthetic.
-Is kinda annoying at times but means no harm, he just really badly wants to talk about his hobby.
-Originally signed up for some sort of show regarding LARPing but was instead brought to Total Drama.
-Though it wasn’t in his plans he still tries to prove himself in the game, despite the fact he’s pretty terrible at physical activity…especially to the caliber Total Drama provides.
Rodney
-A farm boy who's the oldest of five younger brothers in a decently strict family with two pretty decently old parents.
-His family isn’t the richest at all and thus being the oldest and strongest he was usually tasked with all the heavy lifting and taking care of everyone.
-Is homeschooled by his parents and generally pretty isolated. That being said, while he isn’t an outcast he’s very bad with communicating, especially towards people he likes romantically.
-Rodney gains crushes on people easily, and while he doesn’t pursue them it’s obvious he’s crushing hard.
-Was trying to find ways to make money quick so he was one of the few people who knew he was going on Total Drama because he auditioned for it straight up unlike the rest of the cast.
Amy and Sammy
-These two are identical twins whose relationship is highly strained. Amy is the older twin Sammy is younger by a couple of minutes.
-Amy is the twin who is much better with sports, fashion, and other physical bodily things.
-Sammy is the twin who is far better with music, drawing, and general abstract things, though her talents are far less recognized compared to Amy’s.
-The two usually don’t talk and have never really interacted much outside of arguments.
-Both girls really wanted to go to camps but their mom just put them in one camp together that did both of the things they wanted. This later came up to be a secret application for Total Drama that both didn’t know about until they got there.
Ella
-Ella is a very sweet and nice girl who has found a passion in music.
-She’s had a rough life for these past 16 years so she’s found that singing has made the hard times a lot sweeter.
-She really idealizes this princess lifestyle where she’ll be able to achieve a happily ever after.
-She’s basically replaced her brain with her heart. She doesn’t usually think things completely logically as she wants to do what makes her happy. Thus her emotions are really potent.
-Wanted to practice singing and wanted to go to a camp for it. Was sent to Total Drama instead.
Topher
-Topher is a guy who has idolized Chris McLean and other famous celebrities and show hosts for…basically most of his life. Thus he’s tried replicating this charm since he was young.
-He’s a great public speaker and persuader in general. Though he never uses this skill for anything productive other than to have people do what he wants.
-He’s never had to work for anything in his life. He usually just has other people do it on the count of his good looks and persuasive speaking.
-Despite that he’s actually quite envious of other celebrities and is really entitled. Believing the world be served to him on a platter.
-Parents forced him into a club for public speaking against his will. Though instead he got to go somewhere much better.
Dave
-Dave is a self described normal kind person. He is not a normal kind person as he believes. He’s not necessarily a horrible person, just very insensitive and actively neglects to think before acting.
-He also comes off as a faux hipster of sorts as he usually feels he’s super intellectual and smart when he’s really just kinda trying too hard.
-He isn’t adverse to apologizing or proving when he’s wrong, but that’s only when literally everyone is dogging him.
-He is a minor germaphobe and refuses to get dirty.
-He thought that going on some sort of retreat would be a good sort of a detox from the people in his everyday life. Turns out he was being put on Total Drama.
Max
-Max was profusely bullied for a long time in his life and at a certain point decided enough was truly enough. Thus he started to become far more aggressive and seemingly threatening, it’s not working.
-He isn’t a bad kid at all, he just doesn’t like to be pushed around by people and thus isolates himself to seem more mysterious, threatening, and evil then he actually is.
-He’s good with children and has a lot of hobbies that he doesn’t tell people out of fear of being judged.
-Highly uncooperative and very averse to niceness. Secretly really wants it and to be admired.
-He was trying to go to a science camp to try and learn some different things that can be seen as cool and badass. He was instead sent to Total Drama.
Scarlett
-Scarlett in nature is highly unemotional, pragmatic, and highly dangerous.
-Scarlett is very smart, almost to the point of being considered a child prodigy, though people just mistake it and think it’s plain introversion it’s actually something deeper.
-She’s very bad at expressing herself along with her needs. She’ll do lots of unnecessary things to get her point across.
-She has never been tested for anything do to her parents not wanting the stigma of what they considered a messed up child, this makes her an enigma to most everyone.
-After a major issue back home her parents tried sending her to a camp for mental health to get her treated in, she was instead brought to Total Drama.
Jasmine
-Jasmine is a natural born leader who is skilled within the field of survival and nature.
-She has issues regarding femininity due to being strong and having more masculine interests than other girls her age.
-She’s generally been described as a mom friend by many, she embraces that and tries to help people out as best as she can.
-Wanted to join a survival show to test her skills. She kinda got that on accident but it was way more than she expected.
Sugar
-Sugar is a girl who despite her looks and appearance, is smart and quite conniving.
-She lives in an environment where everyone is adept at lying and playing an act. It’s very hard to know when she’s being genuine.
-The only things that she makes known of her real self is her repulsive habits and general country heritage. Other than that her personality can change from nasty to sweet on a dime.
-Sugar was trying to search for more opportunities in the spotlight. She signed up for a pageant show but instead was put into Total Drama.
Sky
-Sky is a girl with only one dream, and that’s to eventually become a future Olympian.
-She only lives with her sister, after an accident regarding her parents. Her sister is an Olympian and she usually likes to train with her and she looks up to her more than anything.
-She’s generally seen as over ambitious a lot of the time and she pushes herself to limits even she can’t reach sometimes. But she sees that if she doesn’t push herself she can’t accomplish her dreams.
-She tried to join a camp that’d help enhance her skills, instead it was Total Drama.
Shawn
-Shawn has major and irrational anxieties about most things for a very unknown reason.
-After watching Total Drama once before and seeing Ezekiel in a feral state once he’s begun to think that zombies are real and he’s going to die. He’s also believed many other things like end of the world hoaxes, lizard people, and other weird conspiracy theories. None beat the zombie thought though.
-He’s learned to not trust people out of fear they’ll become zombies themselves, it’s very unhealthy.
-Shawn was convinced by a very fake zombie survival camp ad and was stocked to learn more knowledge to survive the apocalypse. He was instead taken to Total Drama.

Since @yume-x-hanabi is taking media recs, I thought I would just make a post in case anyone else might be interested in these series/authors/etc. List contains mainly books and video games. That said, for shows: watch AMC's Interview with the Vampire A Magic Steeped in Poison (The Book of Tea) by Judy I. Lin The second book is equally phenomenal. The writing is beautiful, the characters are compelling, and the concept is amazing. I savored every word of this series. (Yes, Yume, I recommended this to you before. I'll recommend it again, now that I've finished the second book.) Harvestella I'm not far in this series, but it's been surprising and gorgeous. I'd say it leans heavily into its SE JRPG roots, but it still has that relaxation from farming games. It takes after Rune Factory in that it doesn't rush you along in the story. You can go at your own pace and choose to focus on farming, focus on character stories and sidequests, or you can progress the story. Nabari No Ou, Shonen Note, Shimanami Tasogare... If the manga is Yuhki Kamatani's, you should check it out. Their work is increasingly gorgeous with each new series they draw. All three of those have an English release (we waited TEN YEARS for Shonen Note!) but you can check other languages. Kamatani is my favorite author and artist, their work is an experience. Warning: bring tissues for NNO, it hurts like nothing else.
Tumblr media
Yonder: The Cloud Catcher Chronicles I tentatively recommend this one. It has a short story, but it's one of the most relaxing "farming" games I've played. It has so much charm and beauty. If you like exploration and planting trees and making your various little farms pretty, this game is nice. It doesn't demand much of you, but you can get a lot out of it in return.
Tumblr media
The Never Tilting World by Rin Chupeco First book of two, second is The Ever Cruel Kingdom. Honestly, I just love their writing in general and would recommend The Bone Witch series, The Girl in the Well series, A Hundred Names for Magic series... I love how well they write relationships. Not just romantic ones, but familial and found family, friendship... They are ace at conveying such relationships. I'm currently reading An Unreliable Magic (Book 2 of A Hundred Names for Magic), and I find myself invested in so many characters and their families. The Magic Fish by Trung Le Nguyen (aka Trungles) Okay just follow Trungles art on here or twitter, first of all. Second of all, this is a great comic. While it a book for young adults, I think everyone can gain something marvelous from a story that incorporates fairy tales with coming-of-age and language barriers. I fell in love with Tiến's family. Final Fantasy XV I had to try, Yume, I had to try. Still think you'd like Ignis and Noctis. :) A Short Hike I think this story only takes 2-3 hours to complete, tops, and it is worth every fucking penny. It's so satisfying, with great music, fantastic dialogue, funny interactions... It's also incredibly heartwarming. I can share more but I'm ending this rec list here, since it's long and I'm primarily working around what I think Yume might like to check out (not certain on a couple of these). And I definitely recommend them to my followers in general! If anyone ever wants recs from me, however, feel free to ask! I love reccing books especially.

Playing the Harvestella Demo
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Harvestella and Pokemon Scarlet & Violet were the top titles I had my eye on for November releases, but Harvestella gave me pause when first announced since the last several Square Enix titles haven’t really been my cup of tea (and I really don’t want to think about Bravely Default 2 any time soon, demo or not).
The Switch is also my first system where I’ve had a few purchases that I came to regret pretty quickly, and therefore I value demos a helluva lot more these days. So while watching the Nintendo Direct playthru for Harvestella was nice, that also didn’t have me convinced. When they finally made the demo available to download, I snatched it up right away, even tho I’d already reserved the game at my local store, bc I desperately hoped, and--
It turns out the demo, and this game, is fucking AWESOME. But, most importantly, the demo lets you experience enough of the game to judge whether it’s a satisfying experience and gives you enough of the story to whet your appetite, to see if you crave more with these characters.
I adore that we can have the Japanese voices. Not that, in so far as I’ve played the actual game (I’m wrapping up ch3 as of this post), voices come up that much. You often get little bursts of emotion from characters or one-liners, so perhaps the most noise comes from your protagonist in the midst of battle, hotly swinging a blade or quickly switching between spells or job classes.
Voices aside, the music’s top-notch, as it almost expected of a Square game by now. But I’ve explored so many locales by now and don’t find myself tiring of any songs at all. Even when some vocalizations get stuck in my head, it’s quite pleasant!
The demo lets you play thru the first two chapters, which feels a little rushed since it’s a v different type of game if you’re coming from only a Final Fantasy background. But I like to think of (and often describe it to friends and family) as the perfect cross between Final Fantasy and Animal Crossing. You’ve got your monsters to fight and job skills to learn, but you can farm, mine, gather, and get to know many a neighbor, not just your party members. And NPCs? Holy crap, wait until you interact with the NPCs. Tho the demo keeps you focused on the main story, just wait until you open up the world (and treasure chests XD) in the rest of the game, bc this game has some of the most enjoyable side quests and charrie-specific quests I’ve ever done. They’re so well-written, I’ve actually been moved to tears.
So, yeah, I’m playing Scarlet and Violet...but, honestly? I’m sinking most of my time into Harvestella right now, *lol*, and I don’t regret it at all. :’)
More posts from the Harvestella Prologue Demo (ch1&2), as well as my continued playthru coming soon~

More Cheese than a Dairy Farm
for @adambirkholtz and also how dare you :D

1. after the last practice of preseason
“Great job guys, good work today. Take tomorrow off and get ready for classes to start, and then regular practices start tomorrow night,” Dex says.
“And the first team breakfast is Wednesday after morning practice!” pipes up Chowder.
There’s a general rush to shower and leave, guys chirping each other left and right. Nursey finally feels at home. He closes his eyes while he waits for C and Dex to wrap up so they can head to Annie’s. He’s a senior. He even knows what he wants to do after college. Life is good.
“Hey. Hey Nursey.”
“What Dex.”
“Feel my shirt.”
He opens his eyes to see Dex holding out the edge of his t-shirt with a smile and doesn’t try to fight the rush of affection that comes with it. He reaches out and rubs Dex’s shirt.
“It’s nice. Soft.”
“Know what it’s made of?“ Dex asks.
“No? Cotton? Should I know?”
Dex smirks and leans closer.
“Boyfriend material.”
Nursey bursts out laughing. He can’t help it. Coming out to him and C over the summer had been a huge step for Dex. He was so much more relaxed and, though he would never say it out loud, chill now. Chill enough to use horrible pick up lines on Nursey of all people.
“Dex that’s so bad oh my god,” Nursey manages to wheeze out between laughs. He looks up to chirp him more and sees that Dex looks proud of himself despite the fire truck level blush he’s rocking.
“You guys ready?”
Dex reaches his hand out to help Nursey off the bench. “Yeah we’re good Chowder, let’s go.”
Still laughing, Nursey just says “boyfriend material” to himself, takes Dex’s hand and they leave the locker room.

2. During Spookykegster
It’s an excellent party. They won their game last night, and there’s no practice or classes in the morning to wake up for. Ideal conditions for sure. And his best friends are on NurseyPatrol, which, to be fair, hasn’t been needed since sophomore year, and has now evolved into the best excuse to hang out with Dex and C for some quality Frog Time.
“You mind if I leave to go over to Cait’s?“ Chowder asks, shouting a little to be heard over the music.
“Ooooooh we see how it is, don’t we Dexy? Not even our epic friendship can hold a candle to the lovely Farmer. What ever shall be done?” Nursey says as he sways into Dex.
“You’re good C, take off. Come help with clean up in the morning and it’s all good,” Dex says, his hands automatically coming up to catch Nursey before he overbalances and falls.
“Bye guys! Have fun the rest of the night!”
And now Nursey has a slight problem. Tiny really. It’s just that now he’s alone with Dex. Dex who is actually wearing a costume for once. He’s dressed up as Woody from Toy Story and Nursey might be having a hard time not staring at Dex’s ass in those jeans.
It’s fine.
“You want to get another drink? Or are you going to dance?“ Dex asks.
“I think drink,” he says, moving toward the kitchen, “I need another beer I think before dancing. Want one?”
“Ayuh, sure, thanks Nursey.”
He goes and comes back, handing Dex a can as he leans back against the wall next to him. He’s drinking and scoping out a potential dance partner when out of nowhere he hears,
“Are you wearing space pants?”
“What? No? I’m wearing jea-”
“Because your ass is out of this world,” Dex finishes a little too loudly, blushing furiously.
“What’s this Dexy? You flirting with little ole me?” Nursey flutters his eyelashes and delights in watching Dex’s blush deepen and spread down his neck.
“I - well - you know - I - no?”
“Chill Dex. I know you’re just practicing, en bee dee,” he says just to watch Dex’s eye twitch at the spoken letters. “Gotta go see a boy about a dance. Catch up with you later.”
Nursey laughs to cover his disappointment and goes to dance. Now that he knows Dex isn’t serious and his beer is finished, it’s time to dance.

3. At Founders a Week before Finals
Nursey is stressed okay? Just because he’s got an internship lined up for credit for next semester doesn’t mean that he doesn’t need to study. And his Harlem Renaissance paper is kicking his ass. But once he finishes this draft he can take a break. He just needs to focus. Or another coffee? Maybe he just needs -
“It’s a good thing I have my library card because I am totally checking you out,” Dex whispers, from the chair next to him.
Nursey starts to snigger, trying to keep from making too much noise in Founders.
“You been saving that one just for me Dex?”
“Just thought you needed a little break from your paper,” Dex says, trying to be nonchalant about it, but his hand comes up to rub the back of his neck, and his ears are bright red, giving him away.
And.
Nursey can’t hold it in anymore, and starts hysterically laughing.
He’s still laughing as the librarian swoops down on them and demands they leave. What a horribly cheesy pickup line. And from Dex of all people.
_X_
4. Nursey’s Birthday
All the card says is “We’re not socks but I think we’d make a great pair.”
But, he recognizes the handwriting and it was left on his pillow so he digs his phone out of his pocket, laughing.
Me: woowwww dex
Me: this one is so cheesy if i didn’t know better i’d swear you’d have a fondue machine down there
As he changes out of his jeans and gets ready for practice in an hour his phone pings. He opens Dex’s response and promptly has to sit down. William J. Poindexter has responded with a selfie. It’s a little blurry, clearly taken while he walks home from his programming class. It’s unseasonably warm for February today, so the pink across Dex’s freckles are 100% blush.
Dex: Happy Birthday, Nursey! Hope it made you laugh.
Something about the picture makes Nursey’s breath catch. He doesn’t feel like laughing all of sudden. He doesn’t want to examine the swooping sensation in his stomach too closely. That way lies madness.
_X_
5. March
It’s been a brutal practice. But no one is complaining. They’re in playoffs. Everyone wants to do well. And Dex is a great captain. He’s really come into his own this year.
But today was like Bitty was still here; Dex put them through a whole practice of the Russian calisthenics that Bitty had adapted from his figure skating coach.
Everyone was wiped.
“Dex, you’re my best friend but I hate you so much right now. If you were a punching bag all that would be left would be a pile of sand on the ground.”
“If you were words on a page, you’d be fine print.”
He couldn’t help it. He giggled.
“Oh stop making me laugh, I can’t feel my abs as it is,” Nursey says, looking over at Dex.
“S’just the truth,” Dex mumbles, flushing abruptly and turning away to dig in his bag for his shoes.
“Fine print,” he snorts and hauls himself up to go refill his water bottle.
_X_
+1 After Winning the Frozen Four
Nursey doesn’t think he’s ever been happier. They’ve won the Frozen Four for the second year in a row. Chowder had a shut out, and both he and Dex had scored. It was truly a perfect game.
He knows he still has to get through the rest of his internship and finals but right now, he’s on top of the world.
He and Dex are crammed into a too-small booth for their combined shoulders with Chowder and Farmer (who flew out to watch the game) opposite them. Nursey feels good, floaty and glowing. They won, his friends are here, and long-established convention means he gets to be pressed up next to Dex. Not an inch between them.
It wasn’t like he was unaware his crush was getting astronomical. And it didn’t help that Dex kept feeding him pick up lines all this year. Lately, they’ve been a small torture, wanting Dex to flirt with him for real.
Whatever.
He’s here. Dex’s here. Nursey’s happy.
Dex has never looked better. Confident and loose like he usually only gets at the Haus. The lights overhead highlight his freckles and Dex’s hair, a touch too long and starting to curl after not cutting it through playoffs. Nursey’s staring. He knows he is. With a herculean effort, he tears his gaze away and tries to focus on what Chowder is saying.
“-And wasn’t it s’wasome when Bully checked that guy right before he could get to Whiskey and -”
“Breathe, babe,” Farmer says fondly, “They were there too.”
Nursey leans further into the leather, relaxing when they leave. As happy as he is, he is tired, and the booth is comfortable. Especially with Dex so close.
They’re all chatting too loudly about The Martian and he’s laughing at Farmer’s Donald Glover impersonation when Dex suddenly winks at him. Nursey almost falls off his seat. Dex leans closer, and whispers in his ear.
“Hey Nursey?”
“Yeah?” Nursey can barely breathe.
“Even in zero gravity I would still fall for you.”
Nursey doesn’t blush. Which means the heat he feels in his face must be a symptom of a fever. His throat is dry enough it might be true.
“Ha ha Poindex-” he abruptly stops talking when he feels Dex’s hand cover his own on the seat in between them and his fingers curl around Nursey’s own.
“Oh holy shit,” he whispers, “Really Dex? Now? With a cheesy pick up line no less?”
“S’thematically appropriate,” Dex shrugs and then tilts his world upside down with, “I got tired of you thinking I was joking around the other times I tried flirting.”
“Wh - I - I -” Nursey has no words. For once in his life.
“Its a good thing you’re pretty,” Dex chirps before leaning in an kissing his cheek, holy shit.
“FINALLY!”
They both jump and look around at Chowder’s shout. C’s beaming at the two of them.
“Do you know how much in back fines the two of you owe?!?!”
Dex just laughs and hides his (bright red) face in Nursey’s neck and Nursey tries not to melt.
“I think we’re good for them, C. It’s chill,” Nursey says, not looking away from where his fingers are curled up with Dex’s.
The fines are worth it.

Steam Next Fest! New name, same idea: a large library of demos for new and upcoming games to try out. In between finishing up some games and assorted projects, and starting up some games I've been meaning to get around to, I was able to find time for some demos that caught my eye.
More comments under the cut:
Sable - This was the first and last demo I tried this time around, and it's a game I've been intrigued by for quite a while. I wasn't actually able to finish the demo either time I played; I fell out of bounds and had to restart the first time, and it crashed later on during the second. It doesn't run well on my old laptop, I suppose... which is a shame, because technical issues aside, I was really enjoying it! I don't play open-world stuff all that often, but this one definitely scratched an itch. It reminded me a lot of Zelda with a similar "run everywhere and climb everything" vibe. Gliding through the air and crossing the vast dunes on a hoverbike felt pretty satisfying, too. The designs are distinctive and visually striking, the music is nice, and the demo provides just enough hints about both the setting and Sable herself to leave me wanting more.
Terra Nil - A "reverse city builder" about restoring life to a barren wasteland. I wish I had more to say about this one, but it's another one for the "I wish my laptop could run this game better" column: the demo kept crashing before I could really get into it. I liked what little I was able to play, though. The gameplay was pretty intuitive, and the aesthetic was quite lovely. Will definitely be keeping an eye on this game, one way or another.
Patrick's Parabox - A sokoban puzzler with a recursive twist: rooms nested in other rooms, and in some cases, rooms nested within themselves. The extra dimension adds a fun spin on the base sokoban gameplay, and the demo showcased some fun ways it could be used for puzzles. I recommend looking into it if you're interested in games of this sort.
Harmony's Odyssey - A puzzle game about unscrambling colorful dioramas. The art style's cute and appealing, and the puzzles were fine, but it didn't seem to have a lot of depth beyond its basic mechanic. The interface was a bit awkward, too; the camera was either too far zoomed in to see all of the pieces, or too far zoomed out to see any of them. It was charming enough, but I'm not sure I'll be delving into it further.
Little Witch in the Woods - From one cute-witch-themed game to another, and another game I've been curious about for a while. A chill life sim with a cozy setting, a colorful cast of characters, a variety of flora and fauna to discover, and a focus on magic and potion-making rather than ordinary farming. Very charming, but also very slow-paced. While it is satisfying to process resources and concoct potions, foraging for said resources is a slow grind, and it's all too easy for your efforts to go to waste because you accidentally tossed a potion bottle in the wrong direction. Still, it seems like quite a pleasant time if you have the patience for it. I'm undecided if it's the sort of game for me, but I'm willing to wait and see.
Faerie Afterlight - An exploration puzzle-platformer with a bright, beautiful visual style. Gameplay-wise, the movement feels nice and has potential to be pretty interesting: the demo starts off with your character having just unlocked the ability to jump and wall-jump, you obtain a dash later on, and more abilities will likely come further in the game. It has some unique mechanics (like controlling a secondary character who can interact with gates and possess enemies) and the combat is okay, but the demo stumbles once or twice when it demands you manage all of these aspects simultaneously. Seems like an alright game, even if it didn't stand out to me like other games on this list.
Unpacking - A meditative puzzle game about arranging everyday objects in rooms. This is another one I've been interested in, and now that I've tried it for myself... there's a lot to unpack, if you'll excuse my wording. There's a certain weight to nostalgia and sentimentality, even when it's tied up in mundane objects like books and toys. The comfortable and familiar, the things we keep with us, and the things we discard or leave behind, everyone values them differently. Even in a brief demo, Unpacking manages to encapsulate this idea in a way that few other games can. Each segment is a snapshot of a different moment in a person's life. Through the simple task of sorting through their belongings and finding a place for everything, you learn about this person, and a narrative emerges. What they take with them, what they leave behind, and what they pick up along the way. It's a fascinating little game, and one that could be emotionally compelling in ways I was not prepared for.
OGOPOGO - An arcade puzzle game about making palindrome block chains. ...Have you ever stumbled across a game that feels like it was made specifically for you? I had never heard of this one until a few days ago when I was perusing the Steam demo list. It's a simple concept, but it trips the pattern-finding part of my brain in very pleasing ways. I can see myself sinking a lot of idle time into this one when it comes out.
TOEM - Quite a pleasant game to round out the list. There's been a renaissance of photography games over the past year or so; I still have New Pokémon Snap and Beasts of Maravilla Island waiting in the wings, and I can think of half a dozen other titles either already out or near on the horizon. It's easy to see the appeal, since it's a sort of game that inherently rewards exploration and discovery while also being pretty chill and low-stress. TOEM looks to be a fine example, with a simple, charming black-and-white art style, and a friendly and inviting world to run around in and complete tasks with your camera. Take a picture, it'll last longer.
A few technical bumps on the road, but a nice selection of games regardless. See you next time.

For the writing meme thingy: 🍄how do you get yourself in the mood to write? 🍑 do you/would you write smut? 📒 any fics planned?
🍄 How do you get yourself in the mood to write?
Getting in the mood to write and actually wanting to sit down and start writing are two very different things, but they're connected, so I'll explain both.
To set into “creative mode” it helps me to do these things:
Listen to music that makes me think of a character/situation in my story/stories. I've got playlists separated by character and pairing. Sometimes I also just work on curating those playlists for fun and get my brain going.
Bounce overall ideas off of my friends and husband/editor (but he's my best friend, too 💗)
Reread old chapters or recent ones and future snippets based on what I want to do.
Once I actually want to put words down, I get a little more strict with myself. I get distracted verrrry easily sometimes and I have to fight the urge to open a million more tabs when researching a small detail.
I move to instrumental music (I have playlists for different moods like “emotional”, “soft”, “sad”, etc. I usually listen to “soft” as a general soothing background sound, as I can get pretty dang emotional when I write, especially with the stuff I've been churning out lately.
So, yeah, I need tissues within reach if I get upset. (Wow, I'm not making this sound fun at all, lmao)
After sound has been established, I like to eat a snack (something with protein) because I can be under for hours, lol. Eat it and finish it. Otherwise, I get distracted.
I also like to have drinks available. I always have a bottle of water, but I also like having a hot cup of tea. I think it's the time of year for me to switch to cold barley tea.
I write while seated on a recliner with my feet up. I have my laptop on a lap desk and it's a pretty cozy setup.
I basically try to remove any excuse I have to get up once I start writing, because I am the worst procrastinator I know.
🍑Do you/would you write smut?
Heheh... heck yeah, I do. Waaaaay more than most people realize. Stuff I've actually posted? It's pretty limited. I posted a couple pieces (Let Me Love You and You're Like the Sunshine) a few years ago, but I've been practicing ever since. One of my planned stories literally has what I refer to as a “smut dump” in the draft where I've been experimenting with writing different moods. I like the intimate scenes to play a role in the overall plot or have it be a bonding experience.
Despite that, I do have a shameless Gray x Mary story I should just get out there that has zero plot, just two cuties in love. In my mind it's so naughty and kinky and I get flustered thinking about it (Mary is hot, okay?), but it's probably hella vanilla, lmao. I really am grateful that people have been really supportive about my writing smut despite what I usually write, and they've been so encouraging, too! I honestly feel like the smut I've posted is really stilted because I was so self-conscious about it. I don't feel like they are terrible for first attempts, but I have definitely grown more comfortable writing it.
Will The Shy Newcomer become explicit? I kinda really want it to, but I might separate the chapters for those who don't care for that content. Overall, I'd like to write more and post more, and I want to write more than just male x female smut as well. I have some of those in my planned pieces (more about them later).
📒 Any Fics Planned?
Firstly, I'm super tickled more than one person was interested in this. I copied the answer I wrote earlier.
Short answer: Yes. I also plan to bring more of my stories over from ffn to Ao3.
Long answer under the cut, heheh. I rambled quite a bit.
Ask me about my writing processes and stories!
I have so many WIPs that haven’t been touched in years that I’d like to finish, so new planned fics aren’t posted yet. Some of them have more adult themes than most of the stuff I’ve been writing, so I get flustered sharing them. I’ve been at a crossroads, as I feel that you can’t have growth without changing things up. On the other hand, I feel like a lot of my readers associate my works with a specific “wholesome” feel-good mood. It’s kinda nice to be known for something, although that might just be my ego talking, thinking that people recognize my work as a “type”.
Regardless, in the end, I feel growth is necessary.
I don’t want to leave a lot of unfinished WIPs waiting because they stress me out and I have too many of them already, so I’d like to have a bulk of my new stories with a good chunk written before I decide to post them.
Among those include:
A longfic featuring Pete’s farm in Forget-Me-Not Valley (A blend of HMDS with the FoMT plugin and AWL). It takes place in the same universe as The Shy Newcomer (Claire in Mineral Town) and there are a few overlapping moments, although Pete’s story starts first. Pete’s personality is verrry different from Claire’s, and his story was kind of supposed to be the yang to TSN’s yin. Pete’s best friends in his story are Ruby (not sure if I’m adding Tim yet), Nami, and Rock. Readers will be treated to a poorly-socialized pre-Mineral Town Cliff (if you think he was bad at the beginning of TSN, well… heh… he’s a wreck here).
Another planned unpublished story is a crossover of Harvest Moon and the movie “In This Corner of the World”, based on a manga of the same name by Fumiyo Kouno. It was written as a gift for a friend. I have the entire outline figured out and have slowly been filling it in. My friend asked for an AU where Claire and Cliff have an arranged marriage and live with his family in Akiyama, the hometown I had created for Cliff in The Shy Newcomer. I took the opportunity to expand the characters in his family. I have it written during the same time period and society as “In This Corner of the World”, but had decided to write a spreading disease as an allegory for war, but then COVID happened and some parts of it just got really hard to write. There are also a lot of sexually explicit content as Claire slowly grows and learns from her spouse that it’s okay to express what she wants despite sex being a taboo issue. If there’s enough interest in the story, I’ll post it, but I worry it’s a little too niche for there to be many people into it.
Pastor Carter and Doctor Trent are one of my favorite rare pair ships. I’ve had a partial draft for a story about them for a few years now, especially focusing on Trent growing up and acknowledging that he has an unhealthy addiction for things that he knows he can’t have. There are some more adult/sexual themes in this piece, too, including the main character lusting after a married woman (who also happens to be his patient) and some lemons. (Does anyone call it that anymore or is it just referred to as “smut” nowadays? Haha) I always feel so bad for neglecting the folks at the clinic in-game and wanted to write a piece that focused more on them, Trent specifically. It’s a multi-chap fic, but I don’t think I’m going to let it get as long as some of my other pieces.
I also really want to write a short romantic oneshot for every marriage candidate in Mineral Town, around 1,000 words each. So far, I have one for Cliff and one for Gray. I want to write Claire with everyone, because I think it would be fun to explore all the different personalities.
I have more installments planned for A Single Day, including a day in the life of the following characters, all with drafts in varying degrees of progress:
Anna
Doug
Nora (yes, I’m writing from the point of view of the cat living at the inn)
More to come – I think Lillia and Thomas would be especially interesting to explore
I do still have that Legend of Zelda Majora’s Mask piece I’ve been pondering where Link befriends the soul of the deku scrub child while possessed by the mask. I don’t have much written about it, but I really love the world of Majora’s Mask. Such a fun game.
I also think about the lead carpenter’s son in Ocarina of Time and that weird side quest involving the blue chicken and the son being lost to the forest. Then that unique-looking kokiri girl explaining that all who get taken in the lost woods become stalfos. Like, did the guy die? Was he sick? Did he want to die? There’s just so much going on there that would be fun to explore.
I also have played OMORI recently and have like… A LOT of feelings about it. I don’t know what I’d write, but I’m still damn impressed at how well the characters are developed in such a short game.
Other games I’ve had vague ideas about writing for include the following:
The Flame in the Flood: I’m thinking a survivalist/action story fleshing out Scout’s backstory a bit more and her thoughts as she’s traveling. I feel like she’s a very lonely person, but isn’t given the chance to really dwell on it.
Night In the Woods: I’d love to write more about Mae’s dreams and what they mean to her. She doesn’t really talk to anyone about them openly, so it’s really hard to tell her feelings about them in some regards. We know that she’s distressed about them, but I’d like to dive a little deeper. Do the nightmares end after the games does? What about Bea’s new nightmares?
Hades (Supergiant Games): I think it would be fun to write more about the events that take place before the game starts, like Zagreus’s duties in the house of Hades, and expand on the strained relationship with his father.

What about the RDR2 boys on a road trip?
Thank you so much for this fun request! As you can see.... I went a little crazy❤️✨😩
General
They fight about what snacks they should bring and end up forgetting them all
They all fart in the car and blame each other for it.
Literally ends up being the stinkiest ride ever and everyone wants to Die
The fighting about what’s played on the stereo is endless and someone is always unhappy about it
If they have to take two separate cars, Hosea switches up the groups so that no one is stuck with the same people for too long
If one car seats seven, Hosea and Dutch will take the other for themselves (smh)
I’m not gonna lie… literally all of them would pee in a bottle… how they feel about it is pretty different, though
Arthur
Can drive one-handed
Drives in silence, not because he likes silence but because everyone else is Too Loud and he needs a break
Tries to talk about the scenery but that’s boring and he gets ignored
Also gets ignored when he points out cool cars.. and cows… and license plates…
Even Charles can’t be bothered to respond
Backseat driver
Gets yelled at constantly for this but doesn’t stop
John gets it the worst
He doesn’t have road rage, just thinks that everyone is a bad driver
His favorite thing is to roll down all of the windows in the car
Rarely gets to do this because of how many complaint’s he’d get
Stops at every farm stand on the side of the road that he sees
After a while he doesn’t even need anything and just does it because he feels bad if he drives past them
The only thing he’ll eat while driving is chips
His clothes and seat get covered in crumbs
Wears his hat, jacket and boots in the car even though it’s hot and doesn’t make sense
Also probably buys one of those dangly pine trees to hang on his rearview mirror
Can’t read in the car because he gets carsick :(
Would he pee in a bottle? - Yes, but he doesn’t want to talk about it
John
If he’s not driving, he’s probably asleep
And if he’s not asleep, he’s “resting”
Honestly, he just doesn’t want to talk to anyone in that environment
The grumpiest one of them
He’s just mad (sad) because Abigail wouldn’t let him go with Ms. Grimshaw and the girls
Probably ends up spilling something and tries to blame it on whoever is sitting next to him
Spends most of his radio time just browsing through stations
When he finds anything he likes, it immediately goes to ads and the process starts all over again
Takes all his rest stops at 7/11 just so he can get a slushee and a hotdog
He’s okay with stopping at gas stations too but they’re just not the same
Takes off his shoes in the car and just wears his socks the whole ride
He probably drives like that, too
This is why Abigail didn’t let him go with them
Would he pee in a bottle? - Yes, but he’d be mad about it and would try to bring it up a lot
Charles
Plans out where and when he’s going to make stops
Probably does a few stretches and some jumping jacks when he gets out of the car
He will let the gang stop at McDonalds but only if he thinks they deserve it
The only thing he orders for himself is an ice cream cone
The safest driver out of everyone
So safe, in fact, that he’s always made to drive at night
He doesn’t mind much because everyone is pretty quiet when it’s late and that means less complaining
Makes a long playlist full of music like Sufjan Stevens and Mumford & Sons (and The Black Eyed Peas)
Everyone tries to clown him for it but he’s the King of brushing it off
“When it’s your turn, you can play what you want” or “I didn’t complain when you were playing 100gecs”
First of all: drag them…
Second of all: okay, Dad.
Talented because he can read in the car without getting carsick
Apologizes for everyone’s behavior when they go anywhere
Makes everyone use hand sanitizer after doing literally anything
They have to pass it around the car like little kids
It’s probably Bath and Body Works
Would he pee in a bottle? - Yes, but pretends that he wouldn’t
Micah
If he’s driving, he gets control of the radio. Doesn’t matter if it’s his turn or not, he gets Full Control.
If anyone even suggests changing what he’s playing, he snaps at them
Dummy probably smokes in the car
Dummy also probably eats while he drives
Holds his food while steering
Everything gets greasy
His rest stops are incredibly short
So short that they practically don’t exist
Threatens to drive off without people
The only time Dutch intervenes with his behavior is when he tries to pick up a hitchhiker
He’s like, “Look Arthur, it’s your long lost brother!”
He also probably tries to stop at a gentlemen’s club in the middle of nowhere at some point, too
“I could crash this car right now if I wanted to”
He only says this once though because it causes a riot
Backseat driver but only to Arthur
Sean swerving and Hosea speeding: I sleep
Arthur accidentally cutting someone off: REAL SHIT?
The only other one who gets to use the charging cord (because he’s mean and demands to)
Would he pee in a bottle? - He’s almost happy to
Hosea
Is never allowed to drive because he doesn’t like to make stops. He 100% will drive past every single rest stop and every single McDonalds they see
Everyone could be screaming at him to pull over and he’d just ignore them
Drives way too fast. Catch him going 90 MPH saying “I’m just going with the traffic!”
Everyone else: terrified
When it’s his turn for the radio, he chooses to play an audiobook
If you complain about being bored to him, he’ll try to get everyone to sing campfire songs
Everyone gets to about ninety-five bottles of beer on the wall before giving up and start fighting
He’s also the one to suggest playing “I Spy”
The gang will play but it’s all like
“I Spy something gross”
“Is it Micah’s butt crack?”
“Yes”
Has one of those mini electric fans that sprays water at you when you press a button
Doesn’t share it
Always has his phone plugged into the charger to the point where no one else can use it
Keeps a box of bubbly water under his seat
It’s lukewarm
He’s the only one who drinks it but he offers it to everyone 24/7
Would he pee in a bottle? - Yes, but only because he makes the other boys do it and he feels guilty
Dutch
Acts like everyone should be grateful he’s driving even though they’re all taking turns
Pulls the “You’re lucky I drove, I’m not a chauffeur!” card when someone is mean to him about anything
Music of choice is just Elvis Presley with a few random smooth jazz songs mixed in
“What do you boys know about this?”
Everyone: …
Complains about everything
If he’s not complaining about someone being irritating, he’s complaining about how hot it is, and if not that, there’s something else
Always thirsty and needs to have a drink with him at all time
Will only share it with Hosea or Arthur and lowkey neither of them want what he’s drinking
When he’s driving, makes everyone stop at a drive-through cafe where he orders the most expensive iced drink on the menu
Like Arthur, gets mad at people for “not enjoying the view”
“You boys are so lucky you get to experience the…” Blah, blah, blah
Ends up falling asleep but only because he wears a sleep mask and ear plugs
Probably listens to music on a walkman lmao
*Dutch in sunglasses and headphones* “Sorry I didn’t see you right there, I was too busy, mmm, blocking out the haters”
Would he pee in a bottle? - Yes, because he thinks it’s efficient
Kieran
Slowest driver of the bunch
And out of all of them, takes the most stops
Probably packs his own bag of snacks and it’s all fucking jellybeans and gummy bears
Says that they’re the easiest to eat while driving
Technically, that isn’t even a lie (Micah, please take notes)
He will stop anywhere anyone asks… Why is he so nice?
His favorite stop is Dunkin’ Donuts, though
The music he plays is either great or awful and no one can agree on which is which
Every other song is 2000s dance techno
That or Taylor Swift (and that’s when people start yelling at him to change it)
Spends the whole trip in slides and no one wants to sit next to him because of his exposed feet
He can (and will) drive in them, though
When he’s not driving, he’s probably watching a movie or playing games on a big ass tablet
Gets made fun of for using huge headphones
People are just jealous he’s able to find a wifi signal
Would he pee in a bottle? - He’s done grosser things for less, so yes
Javier
Brings himself a sandwich to eat and ends up sitting on it
Backseat driver energy but he’s better at restraining his comments than Arthur
That being said, if your driving is shitty, he will send you Vibes
Doesn’t bother much with searching for music and just ends up playing a few hour long YouTube mixes when it’s his turn for the radio
It’s either that, or Mexican radio for 2 hours (and he will sing along)
The only people who don’t complain about this are Charles and Arthur
Probably the only one out of all of them to make the gang go to an actual restaurant during his rest stop
It’s the first real meal any of them have had in like, three days, and suddenly they all feel better
They refuse to admit it, though
Clips his nails out the window at some point
Ties a bandana around his eyes and uses it as a sleep mask
*insert that picture of the guy with his face mask over his eyes on an airplane*
Also probably uses the bandana to block out the smell of farts when it gets especially stinky
Would he pee in a bottle? - He doesn’t want to, but his logic is that if everyone is doing it, why shouldn’t he?
Sean
His driving speed is normal but his driving skills are… Bad
He just isn’t paying attention honestly
Too busy talking
Probably tries to text and drive
Arthur takes away his phone after that
Also, did someone say road rage?
When it’s his turn for music, only plays nasty pop and rap
It’s fine at first, but the fourth time he plays “I Cry” by Flo Rida or “New Body” by Kanye and Nicki Minaj, everyone gets mad
Only takes rest stops at gas stations
And takes literally the longest stops out of all them
Probably spends the whole time telling the gas station cashier about how annoying everyone is
Everyone is like “kasjdfkhd” because they think he’s the annoying one and they’ve been waiting to leave for like ten minutes
Don’t sit next to him because he will sweat on you
If you share your drink with him, 50% chance he’ll backwash in it
When he’s not driving, he’s watching Tik Toks without headphones (if Arthur has given his phone back, that is)
Would he pee in a bottle? - Without hesitation
Bonus:
While the boys are all off fighting, Ms. Grimshaw packed the girls a picnic that they get to enjoy at a nice, camping rest stop
Molly speeds like the devil
She’s like Hosea, if not worse
Tilly made everyone a different playlist and they all take turns listening to them
Karen isn’t allowed to drive because she spiked her water bottle before leaving
Also isn’t allowed the aux cord because she will play inappropriate music or meme songs
Sadie pumps the gas and chooses all of the snacks for everyone
It’s a mixture of healthy treats and candy
Jack is the Squidward wearing sunglasses while sunbathing meme when John asks if he wants to ride “with the boys”

Ultima VII: The Black Gate (1992)
Tumblr media
Ultima 7 was pretty much my introduction to RPGs, and I could not have asked for a better pair of games to ignite a lifelong passion into that genre. There is a real reason why this is still considered one of the best RPGs ever made.
While Ultima 7 is often discussed as a singular entity, it is actually two separate full-length games with one expansion each. For this post I will focus on the first one, Ultima VII: The Black Gate, as well as its expansion: Forge of Virtue.
I recommend playing the game using Exult, which adds some quality of life features (such as a feeding hotkey and a “use all keys” hotkey) as well as the option to use higher quality audio packs, implement bug fixes, and change the font into something easier on the eyes.
Summary
The protagonist of the Ultima series is “the Avatar”, a blank slate isekai protagonist from our world who has previously travelled to the world of Britannia several times and saved it from many threats, also becoming the shining paragon of the virtues meant to guide its people.
In this game, you once again cross the portal to Britannia to save it from a new and mysterious extradimensional threat. As soon as you arrive, you immediately discover two things:
1- A violent ritualistic murder has just taken place.
2- There is suspicious new organization called “The Fellowship” gaining adherents throughout the land.
It is up to you to investigate these developments.
Freedom
In terms of freedom, the Black Gate has plenty overall but there are areas where it is not quite there.
Once you can manage to get the password to get out of the locked-down town of Trinsic you are free to go nearly anywhere in the game right away and have multiple means of transportation to accomplish this, such as moongates or ships.
And there are some very real rewards to exploring like this as well, such as various treasure caches and other interesting findings.
The world is actually very small by modern standards, especially when settlements occupy so much of it, but both the towns and the wilderness areas are dense with content.
Notably, the game also allows you to perform various activities. From stealing to making a honest living by baking bread (which is something you can do thanks to how interactive the environment is) or gathering eggs at a farm.
Where it falls short is in terms of having multiple possible solutions for quests. Generally there is only one correct option for how to complete them.
That said, there is a bad ending you might be able to find in addition to the canonical good ending.
Character Creation/Customization
This is one of the big minuses of the game. While you can select your name and gender (and with Exult also have a wider selection of portraits) that is about it for character creation.
All characters will start with the same stats and there are no character classes. You can develop your stats through training and specialize through your choice of equipment, but by the end of the Forge of Virtue expansion you will have maxed stats and the best weapon in the game (a sword) regardless, and you will definitely need to cast a few spells to progress the main quest as well.
This can make every playthrough feel much like the last, as there isn’t that much of a way to vary how your character develops or what abilities they’ll end up having. You will always be a master of absolutely everything in the end unless you go out of your way to avoid doing the Forge of Virtue expansion.
Story/Setting
While the game is a bit too obvious and heavy-handed about its villains, there are still many interesting storylines in the game that deal with mature subjects that remain relevant today, such as cults, drug abuse, workplace exploitation, and xenophobia.
However, the setting as a whole is greater than any individual storyline taking place within. With the exception of most guards and bandits, every single NPC in the game is an individual with a name, schedule, living space, and defined personality. This was not the norm in 1992 and even today there’s not many games that really implement this well. The world is also very detailed in terms of things like the services available to you, the general interactivity of the game world, and the sheer amount of things that populate every corner of it.
The initial murder is not only a strong hook for investigation but also a shocking scene in its own right. The Guardian also proves to have a significant presence as a villain, using a mental link to remotely taunt you based on the context of what is happening. For example, if your companions die he may offer you some exaggerated, mocking pity.
Immersion
There is something very interesting and comfortable about just watching the various inhabitants of a town just go about their daily lives. They work during the day, eat at certain times (either at home or at one of the many taverns in the land), and sleep at night. They don’t just strangely repeat one single action during the day either, they may do things like open windows when the weather is nice or turn candles and streetlamps on at night.
In terms of immersion, Ultima 7 is my primary example of a game that does an excellent job of it even if there’s some weirdness going on with the setting. Even after having played so many more games throughout my life, only a few are on the same level as either part of Ultima 7 when it comes to immersion.
Gameplay
There are three broad aspects to the gameplay here that I want to discuss.
The first is combat. It is actually simple enough that you can call it almost entirely automatic. You simply enable combat mode by pressing C and your party will automatically go and fight nearby hostile enemies based on whatever combat orders you have selected for them (by default, attacking the closest enemy).
This is certainly better than having an outright bad or annoying combat system as the whole process is simple and painless, but I still wish there was more depth to it. Your stats, and especially your equipment, still play a role but other than things like pausing to use items or cast spells the whole process is very uninvolved.
I kind of wish there was more depth to it, but at least the other two areas of the gameplay are reasonably good.
The next aspect of gameplay is dialogue, which uses dialogue trees for the first time in the series. Previously, it required typing in keywords, which are retained but as dialogue options you can just click on rather than remember and type.
While the keywords are not really written as natural language most of the time (requiring some imagination to determine the specifics of your dialogue), the system is very easy to use regardless. It definitely lacks depth compared to something like Fallout: New Vegas, but so do most games.
The third and most notable thing is the way you interact with the world in general. It is both extremely simple and very immersive at the same time.
Ultima 7 is a game that can be played entirely with the mouse (though keyboard hotkeys make everything much more comfortable). You can right click a space to walk there, you can left click something to identify what it is, and you can use double left click to interact.
For example, double left click over an NPC to talk to them (or attack them, if combat mode is enabled), double left click a door to open it, double left click a loaf of bread to feed it to someone, and so on.
But there is more. By holding your click over an item and dragging it, you can move it. This has various applications beyond just being how you pick things up and add them to your inventory. For example, sometimes objects may be hidden beneath other objects, or objects may need to be placed in a specific location.
There are some downsides to this system. Particularly, the issue that keeping your inventory organized can be time-consuming when it has to be done by manually dragging objects around, and this can also make looting relatively slow.
Despite this, I think this kind of interaction system has a lot of potential. It just has some clunky aspects to be ironed out.
Aesthetics
Ultima 7 was very good-looking for its time, and although modern players will not be very impressed by how it looks or sounds, it still remains easily legible in a way that some other old games are not. That, and the ability to identify anything with just a left click, makes this a very easy game to make out at the very least.
Some of the music of this game is very distinctive too, and will likely stay with you after a full playthrough.
In terms of style, the Black Gate does have a bit of an identity while still having a very familiar medieval fantasy setting with things like trolls, animated skeletons, dragons, and liches. While there are aspects that help the setting distinguish itself a bit, they are relatively subtle.
If I had to describe the feeling of playing this, I’d call it “open and laid back”. While the main quest deals with a looming threat to the entire world, the game does not follow this overly closely at first, letting you deal with it at your own pace and without having your exploration options limited by the story.
In fact, when I was young I often just ignored that and went to live in a creepy ruin in the swamp.
Tumblr media
(Don’t expect many pictures in these reviews, but have one of my “childhood home.”)
I’d say that Ultima 7′s second part (Serpent Isle) has a much stronger and also darker and more isolating atmosphere overall and that has a lot of appeal to me in particular, but the Black Gate is definitely more open and less linear, and I also appreciate that.

It pleases me to say that Ultima 7 remains extremely easy to pick up and play. Even setting up Exult is not complicated in the least.
The gameplay is intuitive and simple, the UI is minimal, stats are basic (and not even that important), and the combat is automatic. I expect that this is not only the easiest point of entry into the Ultima series as a whole but also likely even easier to get into than many modern RPGs!
It does have some aspects that may be a bit clunky, like all the inventory-related dragging, but it’s definitely not obscure or complicated even to someone who has not read the manual (though I’d still recommend doing that). I literally played this game as a tiny child who could barely read or understand English and still got really into it.
The one thing I’d like to point out is that the game uses a type of copy protection where at a couple of story points (including an extremely early one to leave the first town) you will be asked some questions that require using the manual and external map to answer. You can just google the answers for these.
Conclusion
As I write more of these reviews there will be many games that are interesting, but deeply flawed. Games that are worth trying out but maybe not finishing, as well as games that had interesting ideas but that I can’t entirely recommend due to serious problems that will easily put people off.
But I do not think the Black Gate is such a game. I can easily recommend it with no qualifiers despite the fact that it is almost 30 years old. This is really a game that all RPG fans should at the very least try for a few hours, and not only for its historical significance. It is genuinely a good game worthy of its praise.
I will review its sequel, Ultima VII Part 2: Serpent Isle, next.

SBI headcanons awooga
Some headcanons and things for my sbi fd! Abandoned amusement park fic lol
Here's the link if you haven't read it btw
SBI last name is Reid, DT last name is Jackson btw lmao, i probably won't mention it much though unless it's like Mrs Reid for the sbi mom y'know
This has Tommy, Techno, Wilbur and Phil included; lmk if a dt post would be a good idea too
Tommy
The youngest brother, he’s seven lmao what a child
Even though he’s the youngest, he’s also the most confrontational and will gladly ‘fight’ anyone who talks bad about his brothers
He can’t fight
He’s very tall for his age but is also extremely light since he’s always running around
Phil tries to get him to try new foods a lot but Tommy’s a really picky eater
...Tantrums.. Every time he doesn’t get his way
This lead to his brothers spoiling him quite a bit, he’s still sweet enough though since Phil has had many stern conversations with him about being nice to people
Has a toy music boy, with collectable discs
Wilbur got his first disc for him, it’s his most prised possession
Every time he does all of his chores (which are really just small things like clean up after himself and keep his room tidy) someone, whether its his Mum, Wilbur or someone else, gets him a new disc
Techno got him ‘Pig step’ for his seventh birthday and he listens to it every night before bed
One time he snuck downstairs while Techno and Wilbur were having a sleepover and watched the horror movie they were watching without them realising it. Techno and Wil were the ones to get into trouble since Tommy wouldn’t sleep for a week afterwards.
Techno had to read him a story every night until he stopped thinking he was going to be eaten by a demon in the middle of the night
Drinks way too much caffeine for a kid, someone take this boys coke away
He’s got a habit of biting his nails, which has left him with some pretty crooked teeth, which will probably need to be fixed with braces when he’s older.
It’s also gross because he climbs so much there’s almost always dirt under his nails
Hasn’t really grasped the whole concept of not saying everything he thinks yet
Oh my god someone shut this boy up
He still believes in Santa and The easter bunny too
One time Techno told him Oogie Boogie from the nightmare before christmas was real and he cried
He talks a lot in school because he finds it boring but he’s also very good at maths and English for his age
Wilbur
Middle child, Wil is 13. Techno’s twin
He’s pretty insecure about his music even though he’s been playing his whole life
That’s why he likes being able to practice in L’manburg, there’s no pressure to be perfect when he’s alone with his brothers
Super extroverted and confident in everything else though, Since Techno can’t talk to most people, he usually tries to speak for both of them
After realising that Techno didn’t really like it when he said ‘Techno thinks’ a lot, back in primary school, he adapted to trying to speak for what Techno wants without making Techno’s issues obvious
They tell people who need to know, but for people they’ll only talk to a few times they usually just get away with Wilbur acting super obnoxious and loud so it seems like Techno just doesn’t have room to talk, rather than that he can't
It’s easier than getting into it since they don’t feel like most people will understand
has separation Anxiety, when he’s not with his brother he doesn’t relax/ feel safe at all. If it happens at school he won't do his work at all/ Will probably just leave the room and try to find Techno
Everyone kinda knows this and they try to suit things around it without saying it outright
He’s kinda embarrassed, he likes to think he’s the one protecting Techno but really they need each other the same amount
Techno gets this though, He doesn’t mind if wilbur has a bit of a saviour complex, he’ll play along if it makes him happy
They’re working on it with their Therapist though so don’t worry, he won't grow up to be an ass
Interests (besides music) include:
Watching obscure documentaries
Disney movies, favourite is peter pan
  Skating
He and Techno got Picked on in primary school for being so close, he learnt kickboxing so he could defend himself if things ever got physical. Luckily they didn’t but he still knows how to kickbox so watch out
Almost always turning in homework late, he’s good at talking his way out of Detentions though.
And when he cant talk his way out, Techno finds a way to get detention too
He’s VERY protective of his younger brother(s(he was born first so he likes to insist that Techno is his little brother))
That’s good for the most part but he can be a little overbearing sometimes, he’s got detention many many times for cussing out people who so much as looked at Techno wrong
When he’s feeling guilty he mumbles a lot
Techno
Middle child, 13. Wilbur’s twin
Has selective Mutism, completely fine talking to Wilbur, Only talks to Tommy and Phil if Wil is there too but other than that he’s completely fine talking to them as well. He speaks to his parents but not as openly as he does with his brothers, with them its usually very quiet, one word sentences
Like Wilbur, separation Anxiety also, It’s not as bad as Wilbur’s is though, Wil just makes him comfortable enough to talk with his brothers, he can deal with being without Wilbur but he absolutely doesn’t want to
He can be a bit arrogant and possessive of his brothers at times, he’s a bit scared of them leaving him because he can be so difficult so he has a tendency to be cold to any new people they bring home
Interests include: Pvp games, ancient china, farming
He was hyper-fixated on a cartoon when he was younger and now he has multiple cosplays from it that he’ll probably never wear again
His hair is LONG and pink, they never figured out why it grew so fast or why it was pink but it is lmao
When he was born his parents were terrified, they thought he had some kind of rare condition that was going to hurt him but the doctors eventually came to the conclusion that he just had healthy hair that grew fast and the pinkness was due to an abnormality in the melanin in his system or something idk fellas im failing science pls pretend this part makes sense
Being silent with long pink hair as a kid, he got picked on a lot. There were many instances where he just pushed kids over or hit them because they were being mean
Since he’s the quiet one, teachers usually trust him a lot so he and wilbur used to skip class a lot, back when they got picked on, by saying they had to help another teacher do something
In an attempt to get him to be more social, his parents signed him up for violin lessons aged 8, he really liked his teacher and had even managed to speak a little to her over the past 4 years he took lessons
Spaces out a lot
He watches a lot of conspiracy theory videos but he doesn’t actually believe any of them, he just finds them interesting
One time he convinced Tommy they were living in a simulation and Tommy hit a kid to see if his hand would pass through
He’s spoken a few words to squidkid too since they’re childhood friends and he’s very comfortable with him. Ironically all he seems to say to him is ‘bozo’ to tease the other for saying it so often, instead of literally any other insult
Phil
Oldest brother, 16
Cares about his brothers so so so so so much like he will do anything to keep them happy and safe
One time he missed an exam because Tommy was sick and he wanted to take him to the doctor before anything else
Tommy was fine btw, just one of those bugs you get when you're little
Their parents are pretty distant so Phil has been pretty much raising them since he was little, he doesn’t mind though
Their parents aren’t bad people or anything, they just get called out a lot for work and can’t be at home a whole bunch, it’s a big part of the reason why Techno never got comfortable talking a lot around them
He works at a Nearby florist to get extra cash to buy his brothers things when his parents arent home
When their mum is home, he brings her flower arrangements home from work because he is sweet <3
He’s really into mythology and Folklore as well as drawing, when he was younger he had multiple sketchbooks filled up with different creatures that he had drawn
When he, techno and wilbur were all little, he used to play a game with them where they’d describe a monster off the tops of their heads and he’d draw it for them
Techno and Wilbur loved this and always put up Phil’s drawings on their bedroom walls
When he was 13 he used to write angsty poetry, He told wilbur about it one day and that's when wilbur first started adding lyrics to his songs
He can be pretty gullible, he likes to believe that people mean good no matter how hard it might be to see it that way
He can hold grudges for a pretty long time, he’s quick to forgive when it’s himself that’s been hurt but it’s very very hard to get on his good side again if you hurt his brothers
Watches Alien theories with techno, unlike techno he actually believes in them
Has the ‘i believe in aliens’ poster
When they were little, he used to grow strawberry plants with techno and Wilbur, this is what prompted techno to start growing other vegetables in their garden himself

Okay i got this idea while talking to @criminalmindsvibez earlier and I just h a d to write it out
Imagine: the team taking one of those “teamwork building” days during the fall and Hotch has no clue what the team could do together to build their teamwork morale because they’ve literally had to save each other from murderers in a time sensitive manner so like??? Wtf are they supposed to do? Solve a jigsaw puzzle? So Garcia gets the task of figuring out what to do and she decides pumpkin patch/corn maze because fuck it. It’s fall.
-they get to the pumpkin patch, immediately Rossi is like “I don’t need to buy a pumpkin. It’ll end up rotting on my doorstep”
- Garcia points out that doesn’t help the team morale so he better quiet down
-he shuts up, they get inside the farm area and the entire team is just sorta standing around cuz when is the last time any of them went to a patch??? They aren’t sure of where to start. There’s stands that sell apple cider and hot coco and kettle corn and there’s some hinky dinky country music playing in the background. It’s nice but they have no clue where to start
-Garcia decides to take over, because fuck it, she got put in charge of this, and Hotchner looks like a fish out of water. Put him in a beauracratic setting and the man knows how to operate, but this? He looks so lost, it’s almost funny. Garcia’ll command this group of idiot life savers.
- she decides the team should start in the corn maze, that sorta helps the team morale. They gotta find a way to get out, after all. Spencer doesn’t want to go in until he sees a map of it, though, so he can check where they are. So they have to awkwardly go to an employee and ask where the map of the corn maze is located
-Derek finds it in a pamphlet that the employee handed to him, he gave it over to Spencer, who gladly accepts it and stares at it for what feels like two seconds before being like “ok let’s go”
-even though finding that damn map took like ten minutes because the pumpkin patch has so many customers so employees are all over the place. So everyone is like “goddamnit dude” at spencer before moving ahead into the maze
- Derek and Garcia take the lead, Spencer in the middle, then J.J. and Emily towards the back, with Hotch and Rossi in the very back.
-Hotch doesn’t wanna have to take charge of how to get through the maze unless absolutely necessary
-J.J. and Emily just end up having some very much needed girl talk while Garcia and Derek bicker about which way to go
- “Get a babysitter so we can have a girls night” “I’ll do that when you call that hot british dude that you met at the bar last week back” “I don’t need him. I have Sergio.” “Cats don’t replace real relationships with people, emily.”
-meanwhile Derek and Garcia aren’t sure which way to go. “Let’s take a left.” “No, we just went that way. We should take a right.” “That just keeps us in the middle, doll ” “isn’t that what we want?!”
-Meanwhile, the entire time, Spencer has been thinking of the turns and loops and steps they’ve taken and calculated exactly where within the maze they are based on the map
-Eventually Spencer takes charge, after Derek made them take two dead end turns, “Guys- no, we’re towards the edge of the maze. The quickest way to the end is through the center, so we need to go back and take two rights, then a left.”
-Hotch and Rossi are just walking through in silence for the most part, taking in the scenery around them. The crisp autumn air, it’s nice. They do break their silence for conversations. They speak about Jack’s upcoming soccer game, and how tiring it can be to work with children.
- “I’ve never been more grateful that my three ex wives and I never ended up with kids- god, it’s enough going to see Jack’s stuff and help coach the team.” “You have no obligation to show up if you don’t want to, Dave. If it’s too much I understand.” “Aaron, I would rather get arrested for a murder I didn’t commit and convicted before leaving Jack’s games.”
-Garcia ends up falling back with the girls, where the conversation shifts to Prentiss talking about how much the corn maze reminds her of the children of the corn movie
-“ew! Why did you have to say that! All their parents end up dead! That’s so sad!” “Garcia, it’s the corn that reminds me of the movie” “Well duh- we’re in a cornfield! But don’t think about that movie. Think about something nicer.”
-Prentiss is drawing a blank on nice fall themed things, so J.J. pipes up with “what about that Charlie Brown movie?” Garcia points out that doesn’t take place in a corn field
-“well. Only corn field movie that’s coming to mind is children of the corn.” So emily continues to talk a bit about it to J.J., all while making Garcia want to run away because “Ew no it’s such a sad movie! Let’s talk about something nicer!”
-Meanwhile Derek and Spencer are solely up front, Spencer is using that big dumptruck of a brain of his to know exactly which turns to take. Derek’s just walking alongside him, trying to weasel from flirting into conversation casually
-“how about after this I get you some cider, pretty boy?” “Do you know cider on average has to ferment for fifteen days?” Spencer isn’t really listening, if that isn’t already obvious. He heard what Derek said, but he’s just thinking of every next twist and turn they have to take to get out. So he isn’t very conversative
-meanwhile the girls have changed conversation topics to what kind of pumpkins J.J. should get Henry (this conversation change was obviously brought on by Garcia) “you should get him a cute tiny one! That would be so adorable” emily on the other hand is saying to get one bigger than him “wouldn’t it be funny to have a pumpkin taller than henry?”
-J.J. doesn’t know which size pumpkin she’ll get for Henry. But she lets emily and Garcia sway her opinion in both directions, because a comically large pumpkin would be funny. But one as small as Henry would be adorable
-meanwhile the old men duo in the back are still just enjoying their walk. Hotch had mentioned how Jack would’ve loved to come to the patch, before silence fell over them again. Rossi asked a few moments later if Hotch knows if jack’s school would be taking a field trip to the patch, “I’m not sure. I’m assuming they will.” Rossi doesn’t say anything more, but he secretly plans on double checking that, emailing the school, and explaining that he and Hotch would like to be volunteers on the trip. He’d like to see that happen.
-Derek hasn’t fully given up on his flirting game with Spencer. But he’s holding off for now, as Spencer is way too focused on the maze layout. So much so that he started mapping out in his mind where the best spot to place a body would be as an unsub. “If someone was to drop a body in here- the ideal location would be the upper left sides second dead end. Geographically, it’s the farthest point from landmarks and least traveled area within the maze.”
-Garcia hears that and butts in, “No murder talk! No dead body talk- there is no dead body! Today is supposed to be a good day! Shut off your brain for one day, Spencer”
-Spencer doesn’t say anything more about the best spot within the maze to dump a body, though Derek is sure Spencer is bored and thinking out a billion separate scenarios within the maze. Mazes were good for hiding and concealing things, after all
-Garcia accidentally mishears Spencer’s directions of “turn left” and she walks directly into the wall of corn that the maze is made out of
-the team all stops for a second to help her untangle herself out of that before promptly laughing at her
-ok Derek and emily laugh the most, emily tells her to steal an ear of corn “It’s not like they’d miss it. It could be compensation for running into it”. J.J. and Spencer sorta stand there chuckling a lil bit, Hotch and Rossi are more like “as long as you’re all good we should continue on” but they had little smiles on their faces too
-They finally get out! The employees at the exit are like “good job, that was very fast!” And everyone on the team is like “thanks we tried” meanwhile Spencer is standing there thinking “no y’all didn’t I did it cuz I memorized the maze smh”
-the team stays as a unit after that. It wasn’t on purpose, but they all had the same thing in mind, the pumpkin patch
-they walk over there, it’s not too far, immediately Spencer makes his way over to the large containers of pre-picked pumpkins, gourds, thise tiny as hell pumpkins, those white pumpkins, and those red pumpkins. He’s one second away from grabbing a pumpkin at random from the container so he can grab a pumpkin and go, when Derek is like “Hey man what are you doing? You’re not picking from the patch”
-Spencer then has to awkwardly explain how the only times he ever went to the pumpkin patch was in elementary school before he skipped ahead grade wise and the kids in his class made fun of him that day really bad. Like they called him names and left him “trapped” in the corn field (tho he had seen a map and was able to figure his way out easily that time.) and so whenever he has to buy a pumpkin he just gets them from the grocery store because he gets anxious at the thought of coming to a pumpkin patch
-immediately the entire team is like “wtf man you should’ve told us!!! Do you want to leave??? We should leave” and Garcia is immediately like “Spencer I am so sorry oh my god I didn’t know” and he has to sorta awkwardly be like “No it’s ok. I wanted to come. I want to try and get a better memory than last time.”
-Derek pats him on the back for that, “You’ll get much better memories this time, I promise. But let’s get a pumpkin from the actual patch instead of from these containers”
- Derek makes it his soul mission to make sure spencer now has an amazing time in the pumpkin patch. So he stays with him the entire time as they walk around, inspecting pumpkins for just the right one
-meanwhile the girls are looking at the biggest pumpkins possible. Namely Prentiss, she wants to get a big one. “Can you even out that out front of your apartment door?” “I don’t know but I’ll make sure it stays until it rots”
-Hotchner is busy looking for a pumpkin he could bring home for jack to carve, though he does guess that jack would be making his way to the pumpkin patch with his class too. It couldn’t hurt to have a third pumpkin to carve.
-Rossi doesn’t want a pumpkin, he’s already decided that they’re messy and smelly and he doesn’t even like pumpkin seeds or pumpkin pie enough to warrant the mess of cutting and getting the pumpkin guts out. So he just stands and watches
-Garcia notices that immediately and is so not happy with that “you’re serious about not getting a pumpkin?” “I told ya” “ughhh Rossi- you could get a tiny one!” “I don’t wanna carve and deal with a mess” “you don’t have to carve a tiny one!”
-“what’re you thinking pretty boy?” Derek asked Spencer, who had been staring down the same pumpkin for like two minutes, which was definitely unusual. Spencer doesn’t answer, leaning down and picking the pumpkin up instead. “Does it have any abrasions on it?” He asked Derek, as he turns it over in his hands to inspect it. “Not that I can see, no”
-Spencer decides on this pumpkin, and they find some wheelbarrows provided by the farm to put his pumpkin in, they give Hotch the duty of rolling the wheelbarrow around as they meander away from the rest of the group
-Spencer then is like “oh shit. Wait Derek. Your pumpkin. We need to find you one.” Derek just laughs a little bit and is like “I’ll find one lol but you gotta come with me” so Spencer agrees as they go to find one for Derek
-Garcia ends up nearby the tiny pumpkins, deciding to buy at least three to litter her front doorstep with
-she is so distracted she doesn’t even realize rossi making his way over. “You’re right. Those ones are way too small to carve.” He says, she just agrees, “Yes, so you should get some!! C’mon. Get that festive spirit.”
-Hotch shows up pushing the wheelbarrow from behind, listening to the tail end of rossi and Garcia’s bickering match. “You should get some, Dave. It would look nice.”
-That makes rossi cave. He mumbles out a “fine. The things I do for you all, I swear” before picking two up and putting them in the wheelbarrow, next to Spencer’s pumpkin.
-Garcia is b e a m I n g she is very happy with the fact she got this fall grinch into getting a pumpkin. So much so that she ends up getting a fourth tiny one, because damnit they’re too adorable.
-Hotchner still hasn’t found a pumpkin for him and for jack so he’s standing in the patch, still surveying like a lost old man. Garcia and Rossi end up helping him.
-Meanwhile J.J. and emily are looking through the medium sized pumpkins to find something for will and Henry. “I’m thinking a medium sized one, because then it’s sort of a mix of what you and Garcia said.” J.J. explained to Prentiss, who nodded along in agreement.
-the team is all pretty quiet at this point as they try to find their own pumpkins. Derek finds his, a large one that’s very vertically elongated. He takes it back to the wheelbarrow, with Spencer trailing along behind him.
-Hotch finds two round, smaller sized pumpkins. And he decides that those are his, they look great and would be easy enough to carve, so he grabs them up, getting them back into the wheelbarrow
-J.J. finds a medium sized pumpkin for Henry, and two smaller ones for her and will. Meanwhile Prentiss is like “Hey Jayge that Charlie Brown movie is applicable now since we’re in a pumpkin patch” Garcia hears that and is like “y e s good fall vibes yes”
-they finish up in the patch, everyone putting their pumpkins into the wheelbarrow as they head towards the checkout
-Derek pays for Spencer’s pumpkin, saying it’s not a problem
-Spencer literally can’t stop blushing at that even tho it’s the most mundane thing e v e r and it’s adorable
-the team gets their pumpkins sorted and paid, before taking the wheelbarrow back towards the stands that sell cider and hot coco and kettle corn.
-the girls go off to get hot chocolate, Dave and Rossi go to get some bags of kettle corn, and Derek and Spencer go get cider
-“If you make hot coco with anything but milk, it’s evil” “emily what about lactose intolerant people who use water?” “They’re on thin ice.”
-Spencer thanks Derek like five times in a row for helping him get a pumpkin and buying it “you didn’t have to-“ “you better stop talking before I buy you a cider too, pretty boy”
-Derek does buy him a cider in the end, which isn’t any surprise
-Dave and Hotch argue over which type of kettle corn is the best. “It’s caramel, Aaron. Why on earth would cheddar kettle corn be good?” “It’s savory as opposed to sweet, it’s better” “That doesn’t matter if it tastes bad!”
-Garcia ends up coaxing the hot coco barista lady into adding a shit ton of extra chocolate sauce and stuff to her drink
-so much so that it’s literally too sweet for her but she dug her grave she will fuckin lie in it like a winner
-J.J. and emily immediately make fun of her, “I can see the regret in your eyes!”
-the team finishes up buying their drinks, pushing the wheelbarrow out to the parking lot.
-“See, not so bad for a team morale building day after all!” Garcia says happily, she’s glad her idea was a success
-it was. The team is happy, they got hot sweet drinks and bags of delicious food, not to mention a shit ton of pumpkins they shove into the trunk of the SUV
-Spencer’s happy he made new memories at the pumpkin patch, Derek was just happy to help build those for him.
-Garcia’s happy her day went so well, emily is glad she got a pumpkin to carve, J.J.’s happy she got good pumpkins for will and Henry, Hotch is happy that he’s not stuck in a stuffy office building in an uncomfortable suit talking about another murder investigation, and Rossi is happy to be with his found family on a day out
-it was a good day at the pumpkin patch :)

tagged by @jingyismom to share 10 things about myself! it was so lovely to read your post to get to know you better!! can't guarantee my answers will be nearly as interesting but I Already Know I'm gonna ramble (sorry in advance) so for everyone's sake I'll continue under the cut~
1. When I was around 8 yrs old, we had this old broom that looked like the one from kiki’s delivery service and I was convinced it was magical, so I used to run around my backyard with it and try to fly. It was kinda sad though bc every time it didn’t work I’d be like “IT’S BECAUSE YOU’RE NOT BELIEVING HARD ENOUGH” and then I’d try again, thinking ‘this time for sure’, and it. wouldn’t work again. so I’d try Extra Hard and then it still wouldn’t work and eventually I stopped believing in magic LMAO poor cloud :’) but I don’t think I’ve fully grown out of it bc every time I see a broom I’m like... but what if 👀
2. I make playlists for fucking EVERYTHING and most of them are soundtracks to whatever escapist daydream I’m indulging in at the moment, like “songs I’d listen to if I had my own sci-fi spaceship” or “songs for getting stuck in haunted parallel worlds”. And yup, you guessed it, “songs for flying around on a magic broom”. (plus fanfic-writing playlists bc I’m That Person)
3. I love the idea of solo-travelling around the world and meeting new people that way, but really I’m too much of an introvert to be able to do it. I’d probably end up wandering around alone everywhere I go- which actually sounds kinda nice, but I think after a while I’d be too lonely eating all my meals by myself. (Also, having the money? and time? couldn’t be me lmao) But I like to imagine that one day I’ll be able to travel the world with some friends or something! Unrealistic maybe but I can dream 🤧
4. My grandparents live on a farm in rural Romania and I used to go every summer to visit! Cue nostalgic montage of playing with the chickens and stealing apples from the neighbours (sorry neighbours, I was small and hadn’t fully developed a moral compass yet) and swimming in the creek. I don’t go as often anymore because, again. Time and money. Wish I could though, bc I can feel myself starting to lose the language ahh sorry grandma 🥺
5. Speaking of Romania, one time I was hiking in the mountains and it started thunderstorming when we were at the top of the mountain, which was equal parts terrifying and fun bc there weren’t any trees that high to give us any cover. So we were trying to navigate the trail in the rain and then I heard? whistling?? and before you say it was the wind, it Wasn’t The Wind this was like someone whistling a full-on song. But every time I looked around there was no one there and it all felt very surreal and mega creepy. I don’t believe in ghosts but if their existence is ever proven this would be the first thing I’d think of. because wtf.
6. Most of my dreams exist in the same... universe? general area? idk but I keep having dreams that take place in this very large and very confusing university, half of which is in a huge greenhouse, and the other half is all twisty underground tunnels. Not sure how I know it’s a university bc I’ve never dreamed of taking classes there, but idk it just has vibes.
7. Gonna steal a personality trait from @jingyismom and say that I too am very into music, but unfortunately I don't really have any talent for one specific instrument. It's more like, I'm kinda okay at a couple of different instruments– mainly guitar, piano, and alto sax. (and a tiny bit of flute?? but like. I'm Not Good) I was pretty serious about sax for a while when I was doing jazz band!! and I still know how to play all the notes but... I'd probably sound like a goose if I picked it up again now :')
8. I love love love making things with my hands! I made one (1) spoon in a metal-working class a while ago and since then I've been itching to do something similar again, but I don't have any of the equipment for it (especially in, y'know, quarantine). Semi-recently discovered diy how-to-forge-your-own-sword videos and boy oh boy do they make me Yearn!!! imagine! making your own sword! oof
9. oh god these are all so long so I'll try to make these last ones short dskjhds I love How To Train Your Dragon and I have the entire OST memorized cause it's just That Good
10. um. umm ummmmm omg idk anything else. I used to eat play-dough as a kid? lmao
I think I've seen this game go around a bit so I'm sorry if you've already been tagged but- @sheeptopus, @milkoolongtee, @aurltas, @fantasiavii bc I'd like to get to know y'all better 🥺 BUT absolutely no pressure!! also no pressure to write as much as I did I just don't know how to shut up
and to anyone else that wants to do this, pls consider yourself tagged (if you think I'm not talking about you, I'm Talking About You) don't be shy!! 💖💖💖

I have things to say about the live-action Mulan
I hate it.
Tumblr media
I was seven-years-old in 1998. My family was on a beach vacation in South Carolina and one day it rained. So, we saw Mulan that day. It has been one of the my favorite movies ever since. About two year ago my partner at the time and I decided to rewatch a bunch of movies from our childhoods. Mulan held up the best and even improved by viewing it through a queer, transmasculine, modern lense.
But WTF, Disney? How did you fuck that up so badly?! Why did you give her a fucking superpower? She wasn’t the best because she had a superpower. She was the best because she worked the hardest and had natural abilities that the patriarchy would have never let her improve.
Tumblr media
She is not a chi-filled super warrior, she is an average, dorky ass farm girl, who puts herself in an incredibly dangerous situation because she doesn’t want her dad to die.
Tumblr media
Like most of your content, it is technically for children, Disney. Why remove the message that anyone, any child, any kid on a rainy day at the beach with their family could become a badass if they worked hard enough? Why make it a YA chosen one bullshit narrative?! It’s not interesting if she is a fucking Palatine, it is interesting if she is a fucking nobody!
Tumblr media
Seriously if there is one of your movies you could remake shot-for-shot and everyone would still like it, it would be Mulan not The Lion King. Why was the training a not as cool montage without even an instrumental version of “Make a Man”?!?
Tumblr media
And goddammit, why was this not a musical?! I might have overlooked a lot of these issues if the songs hadn’t been removed. Because most of the humor, the fun side characters, and just the fun in general were removed! No physical humor since Mulan is now a video game stoic badass warrior woman who can wear no armor and not be injured. No sassy grandma, because she needs a younger sister? Why? No bombardment of male nudity because..comedy isn’t allowed? You did it in a PG cartoon, this is PG-13 live-action movie!
Tumblr media
To say a few positive things about this movie that I’m really mad I paid $30 for:
It looks very good because all of these Disney remakes have high budgets and are shot nicely. I was happy to see Ming-Na Wen get a cameo. I was happy to see that acknowledgement. And the Mandarin version of “Reflections” that played over the credits was cool.

Right before this movie was delayed because of COVID, I heard it was the only justifiable Disney live-action remake. And that made me pretty excited about it. Now having seen it, I totally disagree with that, this was the most useless of all of them. Go watch the original version. Watch it as a queer narrative. Watch it as a trans narrative. Watch it as a cis, het narrative, it doesn’t fucking matter it is a better movie.

big thankies to @vventure and @tsukkiscookies for beta-ing this <3333
Hands thick from a lifetime of holding shovels and axes pick up the leather-bound book on the table. Iwaizumi Hajime, 1944, is engraved in rusted metal on the cover. He flips to the calendar at the front of the page. Circled in a thick fountain pen is today’s date, with “(Y/N)” scrawled underneath.
Iwaizumi runs his finger over the lipstick stain at the bottom corner of the page. Had it been anyone else, he would have gotten a shovel from the shed and lopped their head off at the defiling of his precious journal. But not if it was you. Never for you.
He takes a deep breath before gathering all his belongings in his pocket. Not much, just his wallet with saved up money from his time serving and last month’s potato sales. Iwaizumi’s reflection glances at him from the rotary phone but he decides against calling you, lest your maid, or worse, your parents, pick up the phone. He adjusts his army cap and sweeps the dust off his shoulders before walking out the door.
You already know what time to come out anyways. Iwaizumi practically drilled it into your head the last time you saw him after you were 15 minutes late to your previous rendezvous.
Cornfields turn into suburbs and the stretch of country land morphs into that of the city. He’s never really liked the city, preferring the clean air of the long extent of his farm compared to the smog. But it’s a small price to pay to see you.
Some people give him odd looks on his way. In their defense, they do have a reason. Iwaizumi’s a scruffy farmer turned soldier riding a rickety car that groans and moans louder than the old men haggling over the price of a sack of corn Iwaizumi’s just trying to sell. He’s a black sheep among the delicate edges of the perfectly manicured lawns and pristine white paint of the government houses that all seem to wag their finger at him.
He finally stops in an empty field — he doesn’t dare park in front of your house, lest your parents see. The mayor would throw a fit if he ever saw his daughter walking around with someone the likes of Iwaizumi.
So he walks. Iwaizumi crouches by the massive oak tree that hides him from view. From his vantage point, he has clear sight of your curtained window. The glass is dented after so many pebbles flung its way. Iwaizumi saves his guilt for later and picks a small, innocuous one.
He throws another one.
The curtains crack open ever so slightly, and he catches a glimpse of an eye in between. Iwaizumi makes himself known. You open the curtains ever so widely, framing your face in between the cloth and shooting him a silly expression from atop your window. He shakes his head and beckons you to come down.
No amount of military training could have ever prepared him for all of your descents down. He can’t help but flinch every time you put your dainty foot down on a branch that looks like it’s breaking point is way overdue. Thank heavens, you make it down,  your skirt slightly rustled and a leaf in your hair, but the mischievous glow in your eyes nullifying all other flaws. You hold his hands to steady yourself. They smell like iron.
"Your father?" he asks.
"Out negotiating with the city next door."
"Your mother?"
"With my father.” You snake your hands around his waist until they meet his own that are clasped behind him. Slowly, you pry them apart until you have both hands in yours. He presses a tender kiss to your knuckles. “They say there's going to be a dance after all the diplomatic issues are done with. They won't be back until midnight."
"The maid?"
"Asleep."
"You?"
"Missing you as always." Iwaizumi scoffs, but he does nothing to hide the growing smile on his face.
“Come on now, before the neighbors see us.” You grab his hand and make your way towards where you know he has his car parked, with no consideration towards anyone watching! In your defense, there isn’t anyone. Probably all in their own backyards, enjoying the luxuries that come with being part of the upper class, away from the trouble and toil of war efforts right now.
You wince a little at the loud squealing of the car opening. No one seems to have noticed, so you pull up a pastel shoe clad foot up into the dirty metal of the car.
“Where are we going today?” you ask.
“You’ll see.” He revs the engine up. You pout.
“I don’t like surprises.”
“I’ll teach you to like them, then.”
You talk for most of the ride, mostly some of the gossip you hear here and there as the mayor’s daughter. Stolen kisses between the maid and next door’s chauffeur, plans to build a new shopping center once the war’s over.
The honking tires of the city are replaced by children’s music as more and more people file into the empty lot. Some are armed with picnic baskets and blankets, others with cones of ice cream and cotton candy bigger than your head. You observe your new surroundings.
“The carnival?” you ask. Iwaizumi shrugs and holds the steering wheel closer.
“I stumbled on them when I went out. And… you said that you wanted to go, so I— (Y/N)!” Iwaizumi’s windpipe is almost crushed by the pair of arms that wrap around his neck. He doesn’t try to remove them, instead settling for a hand on the small of your back.
“I love you a thousand times!”
“H-hey,” he chokes out in his best imitation of his “army” voice. “We’re still on the road. People could see us.” You shrug and pull back anyways.
The car finally comes to a stop at a large field where other cars park. You don’t even wait for Iwaizumi to come to a full stop before you leap out the door, stumbling a little when your feet hit the warm asphalt. The air is clear and sweet in your lungs as you take in the feel of the fresh new atmosphere.
Iwaizumi’s just getting out, but you’re already walking to the other side and yanking his hand out, running as fast as you can to the opening gates. Carnival music blares through the air, mingling with people shouting at other people to come try out various games and food. So much was happening at the same time. When was the last time you went out like this without being stopped at the door by either of your parents? Second grade, probably, under the watchful eye of your nanny that tore you away from the other kids at the playground.
“Where do you want to go first?”
“Umm....” Your newly-found curiosity takes the best of you. There’s so much to see and do, and you’re not sure what should come first. From where you’re standing, you spot a large circle turning lazily in the sky. The line isn’t too long, and the view looks like it would be fantastic at this time.
“The ferris wheel, maybe?” you suggest.
“All right. You go line up and I’ll go get the tickets,” Iwaziumi says. You join the line that is steadily growing while your lover goes to buy some tickets.
Iwaizumi has just taken ten steps from you when an unwanted guest creeps up on you. Some people grumble from behind you at the appearance of this new tyrant that cuts in line so leisurely. He leans lazily on the divider right behind you and makes eyes you would rather he not make at you. The golden watch on his wrist clanks and tinkles on the metal divider. His hair is slicked back in imitation of the handsome actors on the screen, though the same can’t be said about him.
The man behind you clears his throat a few times, each getting progressively louder and louder. He really isn’t going to stop is he? What if he knows dad?
The thought crosses in your mind, and without second guessing, you turn back. Your eyes lock with him for a few seconds longer than “accidental” could pass for. Turning back without acknowledging him would be what your parent considered impolite. And you were certainly not going to attend one of your father’s weekly lectures on attitude again.
“Would you like a handkerchief?” you offered. You fished out the green cloth from the small bag you carried with you. The man accepts it with a cocky smile and a fake cough. You’re about to turn back when you feel a tap on your back.
“You know, I’m set to take over my dad’s company when he kicks the bucket. I could get a pretty girl like you all the pretty dresses and pearl necklaces you want,” he says. He slings your poor handkerchief over his finger like a dishrag.
“That’s very nice of you,” you remark politely before trying to turn away. The tap on your shoulder keeps you from breaking eye contact with him. You’re already standing a little too close to the gate for your liking, but the sudden arm on your right side inches away from your waist keeps you from going anywhere.
“What does a cute gal like you prefer? Tiffany? Swarovski? Cartier?”
“I’m quite alright, actually.” You look to the ground. Surely just buying two tickets shouldn’t take this long?
“Awh, come on. ‘Gal like you fancy a man who rides a red or white Cadillac?”
“Well, I don’t know. Men who can actually take care of their ladies instead of throwing wads of cash at them are quite popular nowadays,” you retort.
“Like me?” someone’s familiar timbre asks from behind you. You catch his reflection in the Ferris wheel door and can’t help but giggle a little bit at his sudden cockiness in the face of a new adversary.
Iwaizumi looms protectively over you, a hand on your shoulder. He’s not doing anything to the unwanted visitor in front of you, but you still enjoy his face whitening in fear. You take the chance and look up at your lover.
The sunlight hits his face perfectly like he’s the chosen child of Helios; the shadows and light bending to his will and accentuating the harsh lines of his face. You swear you can hear the man whimper.
The operator barks out for the next group of people to come inside.
“Of course!” you reply. “Now if you’ll excuse us, we have a ride to catch.”
The man hangs with his jaw open as he tries to form  coherent words. You balance between your heels and tip toes as the operator opens the capsule doors. Like the courteous gentleman he is, Hajime offers you a calloused hand up the carriage. The capsule ascends with an unceremonious squeal.
The capsules are cramped, but one look outside has you swooning. The view of your small town, accompanied by the man’s aggravated grunt, and a warm hand squeezing your own makes you feel drunk and sober, wasted yet clear-headed at the same time. A voice breaks you out of your stupor.
“He wasn’t bothering you, right?” Iwaizumi asks.
“A little.”
His hands instinctively reach out to stroke your shoulders and hair. The intimacy of the capsule has made him more touchy. Instead of shy brushes on your forearms, he’s now melted into you, foreheads touching and breaths on your neck.
“Are you okay doll? Nothing wrong?”
“The only thing that’s wrong is how long you left me just to get some tickets for us.” You pull away. ”I missed you, you know.”
“Y-y-you did?”
Iwaizumi’s flustered. Charmingly so.
“No, I missed your friend from the army that you brought over to your house when I was there that time. What was his name? Otsubo? O’Connel? Ogawa?” Iwaizumi sighs, memories of the brown-haired delinquent he was paired up with plaguing his thoughts.
“Oikawa.” His eyes glaze over as he stares into the window behind you. You click your tongue. This airhead.
Without thinking, you press a kiss to his lips. It lingers, trapped in the confines of space, time, and your slowly waning self control. It’s nothing special, but maybe that’s what makes it all the better to remember. Who has time to remember grandiose scenes of kissing in the rain or in a fit of passion when mundane ones like these are the ones they experience the most? Quantity over quality for this one, shall we say? It’s your run-of-the-mill kiss shared by countless other actors and actresses and seen by thousands of other loyal viewers, but only truly felt by the two of you.
You finally find the will to pull back after a good 30 seconds. Residue lipstick stains his plump lips, almost camouflaging them amongst Iwaizumi’s burning crimson blush.
“Did you really think that I would miss someone other than you?” you asked.
“Well, you looked like you did.” You put a hand to his cheek.
“You’ll always be my number one, Hajime.”
The ferris wheel turns for a few more times, hushed cuddles and silent declarations of love happening inside it’s capsules, you and Iwaizumi being the main culprits. He’s alone with you, with a perfect view. What more could he want? A thought pulls on the back of his mind like an impatient child.
What is he? A mere farmer who got drafted into the war, possibly to never return. And you? The mayor’s daughter. The difference between you two is larger than that of the distance between this quaint little town in the middle of nowhere and the sea. Iwaizumi imagines his future — not necessarily bleak, but definitely filled with dirt and toil, not one he would ever want to give you.
Perhaps it’s better for you if he doesn’t come back.
You would grieve and cry for however long you pleased, but it would be the best for you. A new man would come and sweep you off your feet, like Iwaizumi once did. He would make time for you, like Iwaizumi once did. Maybe some money would be involved, and that’s where Iwaizumi can’t compete any longer. The altercation just now was proof of that.
The operator barks at the two of you to get out once your time is up. Iwaizumi hops off with ease, helping you with the strict confines of your skirt. He’s so enamoured in his thoughts, that he doesn’t realize that you’re shoving a cone of ice cream into his face.
“Hajime,” you call. Your voice, the product of years of being taught how to speak softly like the ladies of your class, a far cry from the gruff barks of the farmers where he’s from, rings in his ear like a gong.
“What are you thinking about, Iwaizumi Hajime?”
“Nothing,” he says stoically. Even though you see the postman more than you see Iwaizumi in person, you see through your lover in an instant.
“Let me guess.... You’re thinking about....” You tap your finger on your lips in mock thinking. “Me! You’re thinking about me! Aren’t you?”
“What makes you think that?” he asks, but the flush on his face is definitely not from the carnival lights.
“You’re staring at my neck like I’m the one who stole those tomatoes from your garden bed last night,” you quip. Iwaizumi does nothing except pinch your cheek, to which you respond with a squeal and a nuzzle on his neck. Before you know it, there are fingers dancing on your midriff and torso, tickling the living daylights out of you.
“Stop, Hajime!” you plead relentlessly, but he has no mercy on you. Like a good soldier, he leaves no place unchecked. Your arms, your neck, your ribs. Iwaizumi takes no prisoners. By the time he does manage to pull away, you’re panting as you lean on him.
“You could have made me spill my ice cream!” you complain as you hand one to Iwaizumi. The smile on his face is wiped away by a look of uncertainty.
“You should’ve let me pay for that, (Y/N),” he says quietly.
“Oh, please.” Your voice drops to a quiet hush as well, the smile shrinking away from your face until it’s only visible to the Iwaizumi and the sky.
“It’s my treat for you. For taking me here.”
The both of you eat your ice cream in silence. The only thing that could connect the two of you as a couple was a small patch of skin where your smaller hand touched his elbow, strong and hard from years of both farming and training.
He really should count his blessings someday. He’s alive, breathing, and healthy, for one. Iwaizumi isn’t rich, not as rich as you anyways, but he has a roof over his head and enough to make a meal for himself at least twice a day. The heavens could have stopped there, but no. They decided to send down an angel straight from their ranks to him. One with a glowing smile he would pay millions more to see just for another second,
Yeah, right, find a new husband. Hell would freeze over before Iwaizumi would ever allow that to happen.
But, like most things in his life, it’s shattered to pieces.
Literally.
The sweet summer air turns into clouds of smoke at the pull of a trigger. Iwaizumi looks up. From the clouds, fall large blocks of metal that he recognizes all too well as rocket artillery. It hangs in the air for a hot minute, like a ballerina staying in the air just before she lands from her jump. Everyone holds their breath as the first shell makes its descent.
Sirens finally break the silence. Recorded laughter melts into shrill screaming as people rush to take cover. Civilians and members of the military alike take off to who knows where — parents seeking their children, civilian lovers holding on tight, a group of friends breaking apart because two of them bear a soldier’s cap a little too proudly.
Someone screams from the other side
“A civilian attack?”
“Women and children to safety! At once!”
“Soldiers, report to the north gate at once!
And it finally happens. A symphony of thundering cracks that shakes the ground under your very feet like a seesaw. The trills and hums of falling buildings and structures soon join it, bringing an eerie soundtrack to the scene of fire and blazes that unfold before your eyes. But the star soloist in the show is perhaps the screaming. It doesn’t discriminate. Everyone screams. Old men trying to survive another five years doing so hoarsely as the hang on to what’s left of the burnt wick that they call life. Teen girls doing so, trying to huddle together with their friends under what they think is a safe spot. It’s deafening.
A pack of soldiers run past you, some carrying first-aid kits and stretchers. Iwaizumi gives them a knowing glance and a nod, before finally looking to you.
You’re the mayor’s daughter. Of all people in this town your age, you know best that during times like these, duty comes first. But what is duty when the people left to carry it out are slaves to love?
“Hajime!” you choke out. You don’t know whether the iron grip on his wrist is to keep him from going or to keep him from staying any longer with you. But you keep holding him anyways.
“Go with them,” he says. His voice is calm and steady, interpolated by the crackling of fires and the occasional thundering of what must be more bombs coming from the air.
“You—”
“I’ll meet up with you later. At your front door, next time.”
His hands moved to cup your face. Fire and explosions are reflected in the tears that start to roll down your face. Sticky residue ice cream lingers on your hand, some of it getting caught in your face as you wipe down the tears that flow so ungracefully down the side of your face.
“At my front door?”  you ask.
The front door with the bronze plaque, serving as the golden gate for people of your class, but a barbed fence to those of Iwaizumi’s. The front door with a hole near the doorknob that your father never noticed, from when Iwaziumi used to sneak letters he wrote in school for you seven years ago. Maybe you would share a kiss, only to scurry back in the blueberry bushes behind your house because you saw the glint of your mother’s car in the driveway? Or maybe share a lazy nap in the sun because your father had guests from halfway around the world and the nanny was sick, and the circumstances and situation all just perfect.
Too perfect.
“Of course. If your father says anything about us, I’ll make him eat his own words.” Something bites at the back of his throat, but Iwaizumi coughs it back under the guise of ash. The last thing he needed or wanted was you getting scared.
“That’s a promise?” you ask.
“We don’t make promises in this household, doll.”
You want to say something, but another bang cuts you off, followed closely another crowd of soldiers directing people off to the side. Iwaizumi takes a long whiff of your perfume— one nicked from your mother’s shelves, yet worn countless times. You smell good.
Iwaizumi gives you a kiss on your forehead — a rather mundane one — before joining the crowd of marching soldiers.
Everything is piercing.
There’s something about the smell that invades his nose that makes him want to retch, yet fall asleep at the same time. It reminds him of the rubbing alcohol that they give the new trainee that bleeds first during hand-to-hand back at his base. Iwaizumi wrinkles his nose instinctively, but finds that the longer he smells it, the clearer his head becomes.
And the lights are just too bright. They’re a blinding white, unlike the yellow lighting he’s accustomed to. The white tiles and white sheets that wrap around him securely make it even worse. It reminds him of the showers back at boot camp, where blood and other bodily fluids contrasted proudly with the white tiles. He blinks several times as he gets his eyes to adjust to the new lighting.
A machine whirrs and buzzes behind him. Iwaizumi has never prided himself on knowing lots about military technology, but in all his years training at the military, he’s fairly sure he’s never seen anything like this before. From where he’s laying down, he makes out a valve connected to his fingers.
“Mr. Iwaizumi,” someone asks. He makes out a silhouette leaning over him. Something pounds in his heart as he hopes that it’s you that’s come to see him, but an adjustment of the light quickly kills all of them. A woman with red lipstick and dressed like a nurse from the neighborhood hospital helps him up.
“Where am I?” he manages to croak out.
“You’re at the hospital. There was an attack and you were ushered to safety when—”
It’s like someone turned a light switch in him. One minute he’s drowsy and fatigued, the next he’s up and alert, ready to pounce at anyone. Iwaizumi sits up straight, eager to hear this new information that is to be delivered.
“The others?” he asks.
“They…” The nurse trails off. She looks down apologetically, the blinding lights reflecting off the sheen of sweat on her hands. Her figure shrinks a bit. The silence is enough to fill in the blanks.
“You left the others out there to die?”
“Sir, we tried—”
The ground is cold and hard on his bare feet. Iwaizumi’s shoulders sag with the feelings of ten sacks of wheat on his shoulders. He’s getting very good at ignoring, what with people screaming around him and sirens that block out any other form of conscious thought. All he knows, hears, and wants is to run.
So he does.
He makes it down an uncountable amount of flights of stairs, until his knees ache and his calves are on fire. The metal is cold, hard, and unforgiving. The light of the tunnel keeps on dipping lower and lower until he finally drops down onto the floor. It seems to be deserted. Iwaizumi puts his hands on his knees and breathes like the drill sergeant instructed him back at camp. It seems that he won’t have much time to rest, though.
“Rouge patient!” someone barks from the other side of the room.
Iwaizumi curses under his breath. Every step he takes is a spike up his thigh. But he runs. He runs and runs and runs until he finally sees a glass door at the end of it all. The door seems to be protected by a set of numbers, like those on a calculator sitting next to it. Footsteps thunder behind him and Iwaizumi can hear people opening their office doors in hopes of intercepting him, only to have the rogue patient run past them. It’s now or never.
The door squeals as Iwaizumi puts all his body weight into the front part of his body. There’s a change in the air. The previously dingy atmosphere from inside the building is now replaced with a fresh breeze. Iwaizumi can’t stop to admire the flowers though. Without a moment’s thought, he rushes through the streets, weaving blindly through vehicles until he spots a dim alley.
It’s still the light of day, but this alley was unoccupied. Iwaizumi drops to his knees a second time, trying to put the wind back in his chest. Breathing seems to do good, so he does so shallowly until his lungs are willing to take in more oxygen at a time. No injuries, except the burning in his feet from running on bare pavement across the city.
Iwaizumi finally opens his eyes for the first time. Where was he now? DId he land at the car repair shop near your house? No, it doesn’t smell like grease and oil. The clothing factory? No, there’s no smog in the clear, blue skies above. Iwaizumi retraces his steps around the city. He closes his eyes again, visualizing his footsteps.
The smell of cotton candy drowns him in his thoughts.
There must be a carnival going on.
But instead of rolling hills and low houses, giant blocks of stone and metal crane their necks to the sky, reaching aimlessly for the sun and clouds that hang over their heads so tantalizingly. Great pictures hang suspended over the buildings, depicting beautiful people with clothes that would make any person from Iwaizumi’s part of town gasp. He wonders how he didn’t notice them during all his running before. In his defense, running from people who would do questionable things to you impairs your peripheral vision for an unknown period of time.
Something flashes out of the corner of his eye. His hands reach up to pat his waist for the revolver on his waist, but there’s nothing there. A closer look at the flashing colours reveals themselves to be… a Ferris wheel?
A simple road leads up to the ferris wheel. Street vendors and pedestrians alike bustle through the streets, enjoying the carnival. Iwaizumi can’t bring himself to care about them. The only thing on his mind right now is where you are.
His mind is spinning so quickly right now that he doesn’t notice the lack of planes the air, or people laughing and chatting instead of screaming for their lives in the streets. Everything rings in his ears the same as they did that night.
Some of the people he shoves through give him dirty looks. And he’s in luck too, not far down the street is the back of a familiar head of hair. A closer look reveals a blue bow, the same blue bow he recognizes as the one he bought you for your birthday. You had shoved his gift away and told him that the money would be better off feeding the cattle, but he had made sure that it found a snug home in your hair.
He doesn’t remember you wearing it on the car ride earlier.
There’s a cone of ice cream in your hand— not melting on the ground surrounded by ash. You blissfully lick the cone while looking at the rides whizzing above.
“(L/N)! Why haven’t you gone with the others?” Iwaizumi asks frantically. You turn your head back so casually Iwaizumi wants to yank you away. If it was any other person, he would have wanted to disappear right then and there.
But it’s you. Same eyes that widen in confusion when you look at him. Same nose that wrinkles in disgust when you see his bare feet on the concrete. Same lips that part ever so slightly at his appearance.
“I’m… sorry?” you ask.
“There was an aerial strike, and everyone had to go to safety! Why weren’t you with them? I was worried sick for you the whole time and you stroll through the streets like everything’s fine and dandy?”
People are starting to stare even harder now. Some people shuffle closer to you in case the worst situation comes to light.
“I think you have the wrong person, sir,” you say calmly.
“Wrong person? Now is not the time for joking, (L/N) (Y/N)!”
Iwaizumi wants to slap the eyebrows that are furrowing too slowly for his liking off your face, he just wants you to hurry up so the both of you can get to safety and meet at your front door like he promised but—
“(L/N) (Y/N)?”
“Who else would you be?” He must look like a madman now, screeching while other pedestrians give him odd looks. Someone seems to call the police on him, but the screeching of tires behind him is enough to dispel all sudden danger.
Black cars surround the small road, visages of baffled pedestrians and vendors reflected in their tinted windows. The drivers don’t seem to mind them, some opening the doors to their black suit clad passengers, all around his height and build. Iwaizumi feels a hand creeping up on his back, but he shakes it off and takes a long step to you.
“(L/N) (Y/N) is my grandmother’s name, sir.”

Meeting and Dating Sticks
Tumblr media
(My gif)(requested by anonymous)
- As a kid, you spent ever summer visiting your grandma and grandpas farm. It was the highlight of your year but there was something there that you wished you could avoid... Sticks.
- Ever since you were little the farmhands son would harass you, always trying to scare you, tease you, push you around. He infuriated you growing up and was the one thing you couldn’t stand about visiting your grandparents.
- He was also one of the first things that came to mind when your parents asked if you’d be willing to stay with them for a while as they packed up your old house. You’d be moving to the countryside not too far away from the farm as soon as they sold it.
- You figured that Sticks had to have grown up by then, you hadn’t seen him for over a year and who were you to turn down staying with your grandparents. You were... partly right.
- Stanley and Sticks picked you up from the bus station allowing you to get your first good look at the country boy “all grown up”. He’d gotten handsome was your first thought but the sentiment was lost the instant he opened his mouth.
“So the city slicker returns.”
- Immediately, you knew this prolonged visit wasnt going to be as peaceful as you thought it would. During your car ride, Sticks was relatively calm but after you got to the farm and were done settling in...the games began.
- Throughout the week, you were met with pranks, teasing, and all different annoyances. It seemed like Sticks genuinely just enjoyed seeing you get all worked up, and boy did you hate him for it. The thing you wanted most in the world was to wipe that smile off his face. But then things changed, well, not completely.
- It was a normal day, you’d been wandering around the farm trying to find something to do when you heard something in the barn. You figured something had fell over so you went inside to pick it up and maybe hang out in the straw for a while. When you went inside there was nothing seemingly out of place so you just went about hopping on the straw and exploring the bales.
- That was when Sticks popped out, scaring you half to death and laughing loudly as you shrieked. You yelled at him angrily, pushing him down while also managing to take yourself with him as you lost your footing. You ended up halfway on top of him and half poked by the straw.
- His laughter calmed as you realized his hands were on your sides, catching you before you crashed onto him. He didn’t seem all too fazed, aggravatingly content with your current situation. You quickly stumbled your way up and out of the barn, your cheeks burning hot as you made your escape.
- It was with abject horror that you realized you were falling for him. Slowly but surely you were noticing the redeemable qualities about him and disgusting yourself with those very same thoughts. Although you had to admit, he’d dialed down his pranks after the barn incident. You weren’t sure what it meant but you hoped it was good.
- Every now and again you’d catch his eyes on you, it felt as though he knew your secret and it bothered you to no end but you couldn’t risk confronting him. You couldn’t let him have a chance at embarrassing you even further. So you let him watch you and minded your business, keeping your distance as you tried to forget what your mind was pushing you to think about.
- It was a week or so later, you were walking by the cornfield when all of a sudden you were pulled in through the stalks. You shrieked but immediately clamped your mouth shut as you saw who it was. Guess who. He grinned even as you slapped his chest.
“What was that for!” You yelped, adjusting yourself as your heart attempted to slow itself down.
“I wanted to show you something.” He told you.
“And scare me half to death.” You glared
“Oh, don’t be a baby,” he scoffed amusedly. “Close your eyes.”
“Then how will I see what you want to show me.” You rebutted.
“Just close them, alright?” He said and you could have sworn he was nervous.
- So you closed them and waited. You were about to open them again to ask what he was trying to pull when something warm pressed against your lips. Your eyes flashed open as he quickly pulled away, watching you warily as he awaited your response. You weren’t sure what to say so you said nothing and began to walk down the trail between the corn.
- He called after you, hightailing it to catch up. Once he was at your side he apologized for everything, even the kiss, awkwardly stuttering his way through a confession of his feelings as you continued to walk. He pleaded with you not to tell anyone, telling you again that he was “real sorry for even trying”.
“Don’t be,” you finally said, taking a glance at him before hesitantly kissing his cheek and disappearing through the corn. You didn’t see it but the instant you were gone he jumped around, hidden behind the stalks with a massive grin on his face.
- Your first actual date was in the barn, he surprised you with a little set up in the loft. A soft blanket, food, music playing through a busted up radio; you had to admit, it was adorable. The two of you shared a real kiss and just like that the city slicker and the country boy were an item.
- You probably keep your relationship a secret from your parents and grandparents for a little while. You aren’t sure how they’ll react so you figure you’ll just see what happens between you two first, no sense making waves when you aren’t gonna surf.
- Theres not a lot of pda in your relationship mostly because he doesn’t want to get in trouble with your folks.
- He probably really likes cuddling but refuses to admit it because he’s a tough farm boy.
- Comparing accents and what you call things when you’re bored.
- He’s a fan of metal bands so you spend a lot of your time listening to them yourself.
- Every now and again he’ll ask you to help him cut his hair. You’ll sit on his bathroom sink and trim it while he rests his head in your lap.
- Sitting next to him for meals and secretly, purposefully brushing each other’s hands when passing food. Once in a while he’ll reach over and hold your hand under the table.
- Sticks kind of grew up differently than most kids. Where others were allowed to just be kids, he had to be grown up and much more responsible. Because of that, you’ll sometimes catch him acting like your father, telling you to do, or not to do, this or that.
- He’s always willing to help but usually teases that you owe him whenever he does.
- Anytime you walk away his eyes follow you until you’re out of view. Sometimes it’s subtle glances, other times not so much.
- Sharing looks with each other when things get weird.
- Accepting his father and his odd sayings wholeheartedly.
- His dad loves you almost as much as he does, platonically of course.
- Old habits die hard, right? He still likes scaring you but definitely doesn’t do it quite as much as he used to. He also likes telling you scary stories rather than trying to jumpscare you all the time.
- A part of him likes telling you ghost stories because they put you on edge and let him be your knight in shining armor, holding you close whenever you actually get scared.
- You’ve gotten used to his teasing by now so his incessant need to “occasionally” make your blood boil doesn’t affect you too much anymore.
- Teasingly stealing his gloves or hat when he’s not looking in retaliation.
- Resting in the straw together, you can’t remember how many times the two of you have fallen asleep in the barn.
- Whenever you’re ready to leave he tenderly picks pieces of it out of your hair, giving you a little smile as you peck him on the lips in return.
- Helping him with his pranks if they seem harmless enough.
- Occasionally helping him with his work so that he doesn’t kill himself trying to do everything by himself.
- Sometimes when you visit him while he’s working he’ll just start explaining what he’s doing or how something works. You never knew you could learn so much from just deciding to see your boyfriend.
- Kissing in the corn fields.
- Sneaking into his house late at night.
- Always stands behind your chair whenever you’re sitting. He does it so much that it feels weird not having his presence behind you whenever you’re somewhere without him.
- He always stands up for you no matter who he’s defending you from.
- He’s very protective, always keeping an eye on you or keeping you close. Whenever you’re encountering something he doesn’t like he’ll keep you behind him so that he can defend you if need be.
- Hes really good at comforting you whenever you’re worried, sad or scared; more so when he isn’t the direct cause of it.
- Eating pie together.
- Watching the stars or clouds (depending on the time of day). You lay your head against his arm as the two of you lie on your backs in one of the many open fields around the farm.
- Going on long walks together.
- Your grandparents probably don’t like the idea of you going off on your own so they made a rule that if you want to go somewhere in town you need to bring Sticks along completely unaware of the irony.
- Piggy back rides.
- Really likes getting kisses on the cheek. There’s just something so nice about it especially if you just do it out of nowhere.
- He probably still, jokingly, calls you “city slicker” but when he’s actually trying to use a pet name he’ll just say hon, darlin, missy or some kind of name that means something in your relationship.
- He probably built you a tire swing at some point so the two of you visit that and play around on it when he isn’t working.
- He likes listening to you read or talk while he does menial tasks. It makes his day a little less boring and let’s him appreciate how nice your voice is.
- He picks you little wild flowers he finds while working. Sometimes they end up a little wilted before he can give them to you but you appreciate the gesture.
- It’s pretty easy to get him worked up so fights happen... I wouldn’t say often but certainly not rarely. He’ll raise his voice but never quite yells at you, he just can’t bring himself to do it no matter how mad he gets in the moment.
- It doesn’t take long for the two of you to make up. Most of your fights are petty arguments just...louder. You’ll both apologize and hug and that will be the end of it.
- Sticks isn’t a very jealous person but he has his moments. Whenever he does get jealous the main reason behind it is his own insecurities. He can’t help but think it would be easier for you to date anyone but him. You wouldn’t have to deal with evil scarecrows or strange dads or dumb farmboys that don’t even work on their own farm.
- You always reassure him that you don’t want anyone else but him. He’s the only farmboy, the only boy at all, that you could ever love.
- He likes you, the real you, odd quirks and all. In fact, he finds the strange things about you kind of endearing in a way. It gives him more to learn about you and love.
- Even though he doesn’t say it very often, he really does love you. He never realized someone could make him as happy as you do. You really changed his life for the better.
