BuzzFeed Unsolved Episode Views

So, tumblr, I’ve been doing a Thing for the past 6 months. I’ve been tracking the view count of every single BuzzFeed Unsolved episode in a spreadsheet. Why? Well, it all started when I got curious as to what their most viewed episodes were and an innate desire to understand how the fuck YouTube works. After being mildly surprised by what I found, I looked them up again a couple weeks later (by which 2 episode of True Crime Season 5 had aired) and then decided to start keeping track of them all. At first, it was week-by-week during the True Crime season to see how the new episodes did and if that drove people to watch the older episodes. After TC ended, I did it less often but still checked back in every 2-4 weeks and now I’m doing it again for SPN s6. I realized yesterday that it’s been 181 days since I started, so I thought it’d be a good time to see how much each episode has been watched in the interim. 

Full caveat: I am no actual statistics expert in anyway, this is just some stuff I’m doing for fun. 

So, first off, for the purposes of this, I split up the episodes into pre-TC s5 and after. I don’t think it makes sense to lump them all in together since newer episodes get more views and all that jazz. That means for this first part, the newest episode I included was the Black Dahlia Revisited episode from January 2019.

Additionally, I round down when looking at YouTube’s view count. For instance, if an episode has been watched 5,499,999 times, I input it as 5.4 million views. (Same with an episode that has 5,400,000 views). So everything is rounded and approximate.

Now, onto the things I found out!

Over the past 6 months, the 80 episodes of BuzzFeed Unsolved were watched an additional 1.36 million times, on average.

True Crime episodes were watched on average 1.23 million more times, whereas Supernatural episodes were watched 1.48 million more times.

At that point there were 39 TC and 41 SPN episodes.

The episodes that gained the most views were, in order, The Exorcism of Anneliese Michel (3.5 million), The Haunting of Hannah Williams (3.4 million), and Three Cases of Ghosts and Demons (2.9 million). Episodes that were already in the top 15 most watched saw the biggest average gain, with the exception of The Bizarre Death of Elisa Lam, their most viewed episode (20.9 million views as of September 30, up from 20.1 million from April 2). Hannah’s House is an exception here as well, since it started much further down with 6.7 million views and now has 10.1.

I cannot overemphasize how popular Hannah’s House is. Despite only airing last November, it has more views than every episode aired since Goatman, not to mention many before that. It’s their 22nd most viewed episode ever, out of a current total of 93. People really enjoyed Shane high on Dayquil and the Ovilus fucking with Ryan. 

The episodes with the fewest gains are the original Black Dahlia, Dyatlov Pass, and Hinterkaifeck. (.4, .4, and .3 million gains). On average, the older Shane-less episodes gained the least, with a few exceptions (Men in Black and Tupac fared better than the average).

Speaking of Tupac, I am forever amused that his episode has almost twice the view counts as Biggie’s. (12 vs 7.1) Poor Biggie.

Most of their alien episodes saw a slight bump this summer after the Area 51 raid was announced, which amuses me greatly. The one exception was the Pentagon UFOs episode, which I’m convinced has TERRIBLE SEO, as it never, ever shows up in the “other videos you might like” sidebar on BFU episodes. (This is how I usually get my view counts, it’s easier than clicking on every single episode every single time)

22 episodes have 10 million or more views.

Alcatraz was their most popular season 4 TC episode, by a lot (9 million views. #2 was Bobby Dunbar with 7.4. Fan-favorite Forrest Fenn has 5.4, so figure that out)

As of September 30, 2019, the ten most viewed episodes of BuzzFeed Unsolved are: Elisa Lam (20.9), 3 Cases of Ghosts and Demons (19.1), Exorcism of Anneliese Michel (17.4), The Illuminati (17.3), Men in Black (13.6), DB Cooper (13.6), Goatman’s Bridge (12.4), Queen Mary (12.3), Tupac (12), and The Axeman (12).

Now, for the newer episodes! There’s not as much to say on these, since they haven’t been out as long, but some things to note:

The 13 episodes of BFU that have aired since March 22nd averaged a 4.4 million view count. Not including the 3 that have aired in the past two weeks, the average jumps to 4.8.

The episode that had the most views in the week after the premiere was The Watcher. It’s their most popular of this bunch, with 7.4 million views. All Hail The Watcher, I guess.

The sponsored Supernatural episodes (La Llorona and Annabelle) both have 5.7 million views, which is pretty good and probably a strong point in favor of them returning to this well when they’re in between seasons. (and maybe bring back Curly. Please bring back Curly.)

Some other fun facts:

The 10 least watched episode of BFU are the following (I am not counting the 3 newest episodes here since they’re too new to hold a lot of weight): Texarkana Phantom Killer (4.5), Litveniko (4.3), Tombstone (4.1), Shark Arm Murders (4.1), Moon River Brewing (4), Florida Machete Murder (4), Pentagon UFOs (3.7), Yuma Prison (3.7), Walter Collins (3.7), Bugsy Siegel (3.3).

Most of those are newer, which makes sense. What does not make sense is why people don’t rewatch Yuma Prison all the time like I do. Do you not enjoy watching Ryan cry because of bats?

I added up the total views for both True Crime and Supernatural and divided by the number of episodes to see if one was more popular than the other:

The average True Crime episode has been watched 7.85 million times, whereas the the average Supernatural episode has been watched 8.22 million times. So, Supernatural, but it’s close enough that it’s probably not very significant. (Again, I’m not a statistics expert)

BUN now has 3 million subscribers! I don’t have the exact number when I started this, but it was around 2.3 I think. So congrats to the BUN team.

One last thing I want to note, is that I have no idea what is considered successful or not in terms of view-counts for this show so I would try not to draw any conclusions there. 3.3 million views is still a lot (it’s more than any of Polygon’s Unraveled series has, for a comparison). Also I wish I could tell you if Trending mattered but honestly, I can’t figure it out. YouTube is an enigma.

Anyway, I have no idea if anyone finds this as interesting as I do, but if you do, my spreadsheet is on Google Sheets here for viewing. You’ll notice I actually have an earlier column of view stats from March 13th, but as I did not have the exact view counts for the episodes with 10+ million views, I didn’t count it for this. (You have to individually click on each episode to see the precise view counts, otherwise YT just rounds down to the nearest million)

3. What do you think their favorite season is? What season do you associate them with?

Wow, I honestly have no idea! I'm torn between summer and winter. I guess those are just the seasons where she has the most free reign. #GeminiProbs. I think I associate her with fall, however. It's probably just the whole 'red' aesthetic I associate with her.

4. What is the kindest thing they have done for you or the kindest thing they have said to you?

M’s done many kind things for me, but none of them really stick out. Today, I’ll pick the time she opened up her room for me at any time of the school day when my family was having a rough time. I think the kindest thing she’s said to me was that time one or two years ago that I asked her how she felt about me, and she said that there’s a special place in the Universe just for me. Oh, of course there’s also the times she’ll called me a goddess/god to others. Oh M, why do you have to be so kind to me? 

12. What kind of music do they listen to?

As with any music teacher, it’s very difficult to pinpoint a taste of music from them. With M, I just learn more and more over time about what music has shaped her as a person. She grew up with country, Christian, and emo type stuff. She knows all of those classics. She also seems to have an affinity for 70s music; while she has great knowledge of all sorts of oldies, she talks about artists popular in the 70s a lot. With her, it can be anything. I’ve perked her up by playing some hard rock tunes, but then she can also get into the details of classical pieces and their eras. Her job classification kind of requires her to know this, but she’s always happy to talk about it. Every now and then, I hear her hum a tune from the top of the recent years’ charts. She’s into musicals as well, which is a part of music that totally goes over my head. It’s not just the mainstream ones either, but the classics, and the ones loved by families all over. She obviously listens to a lot of marching/concert/jazz band and choir classics. We also totally nerd out with each other over drum corps stuff. Interestingly enough, she’s never marched drum corps. I don’t think anyone in her family has either. She can pick out her top 10 Gregorian chants. I’ve heard her rap before, out of her own volition. She’s always pointed out my band shirts. I literally just keep figuring out more and more surprises in M’s music taste. I could probably write an entire essay about it, if I haven’t already in this post. ;P

16. What was your tc like when they were your age? If you don’t know, what do you think they were like?

I’m not getting a clear mental picture of what she was like when she was my age. I know a lot of bits and pieces, but I can’t really piece together a person, you know? I know she wasn’t very smart...at least, not as smart as I am. I’ve (secretly and under very secret circumstances) seen the way she typed back then and holy shit...it’s hard to believe that she’s a bookworm now. She had her career figured out already. She was a total band geek, tried and true. Contrary to this fact, she never passed auditions. She’s said that she probably didn’t try very hard, due to a lack of caring. This confuses me, and leaves me questioning, what did she care about as a teenager? If it wasn’t band, then I’m completely lost. It obviously wasn’t succeeding in school, as she took all the basic level classes. I think she might’ve had a slight emo/punk/scene phase. She’s hinted to it by using her music taste. I mean, I think everyone her age has. M wasn’t really rebellious, though. She didn’t do drugs or party much (yet). She would actually snitch on some of the kids that did. What a mysterious teenager.

It’s really rough, I won’t lie. And it’s been rough for a very long time. But I do hear you on the “it’s impossible to NOT find somebody who’ll click with me.” But I do sometimes fall into the thinking of “how is it possible that there are 7 billion people out there and I seem to struggle in finding anyone irl to even have a conversation with.” But that’s a thought pattern I don’t really want to entertain right now.

Also, it sounds weird to say, but thank you for saying it’ll get worse before it gets better. Because that kinda.... makes it feel more real, you know? It’s way too easy for my brain to just think nice things people say are “empty platitudes”. So when something feels a little more down to earth, it hits me a little harder. So thank you.

While I was trapped in a pit of depression and literally could not keep up with tumblr and did nothing but stare at youtube for 2 days straight, I couldn’t remember who said these things, but somewhere in that pit my brain was clinging onto the things you mentioned, specifically “nobody can predict what tomorrow brings” and how you pointed out that all my negative thoughts all started with “I feel”. So while in that terrible mindset, those two things really hit me and gave me some sort of grounding, and I remembered them clearly despite the rest of those 2 days being kind of a blur.

So I sincerely want to thank you very much for that. It definitely helped, probably more than you realise even after hearing me trying to explain it.

Thank you for being there, and for sending me this message, and for looking out for me and showing me that in whatever way, I’m not completely and utterly alone, even if I am all by myself.

Thank you @itmestine and honestly? Even if it took a year and a half, it’s somehow comforting to hear it happened at all. I still don’t know if it’s even possible for me to find some form of irl friendship here, but I am trying. It’s difficult, but I’m making an effort not to spend all of my time in my room working. Even if it’s just driving to the mall to get groceries or going to a favourite place to eat. I am making a large effort not to just sit by myself all the time.

Somebody suggested getting into a DnD game which can be a good way to meet people. But I haven’t tried it yet. I’m concerned about asking on the town’s facebook page because I’m worried I’ll get marked as some sort of “““satanist”““ for wanting to play DnD. But I’m also worried about starting my own game and inviting people to it because I don’t know how to DM and I feel I’m too awkward and shy to be the person heading a game.

I’m going off topic now though. Thank you for sharing with me. It does give me a little bit of hope.

@sketchehkimmeh Honestly? that whole “go to a coffee shop” thing just to be around people even if not directly interacting is a really good idea. A coffee shop I really like is moving to the mall around the corner from me, and I’m hoping once they open I can start spending a lot of time there, if only to write fanfics or something. (I’m hoping a change in environment might help the writing thing)

And don’t worry, I am seeing a therapist and he’s helping me with stress management and anxiety problems. He can’t really help me meet other people, but it’s at least one extra person I can speak to.

Big Digiformers Crossover Idea Post

Okay, so I went looking for Digimon/Transformers crossovers and I was kinda disappointed so I guess I’ll just have to go and make one myself!! (Also thanks to @decepticon-spydrone for listening through my ideas and helping me with the AU)

Okay, so the idea is half the characters from TF become Digidestined and the rest are their digimon. So we start off with a young set of kids who are brought into the Digital World by Optimon who needs their help to stop the evil forces of Megamon and the Digicons! (Dun dun Dun)

We have Jazz (with Prowlmon), Hot Rod (Driftmon), Bumblebee (Cliffjumpamon), Perceptor (Wheeljamon), Arcee (Springamon) and Tailgate (doesn’t have one initially but later picks up a virus type Cyclonumon). They also later meet a kid called Rung who doesn’t seem to have a digimon or a crest and no one can quite figure out why.

Hot Rod is naturally the one wearing a set of goggles so he tries to declare himself the leader (even though Jazz is way more level headed and practical).

Optimon needs the Digidestined because Digimon have lost the ability to digivolve by themselves. They have to bond with a human partner in order to digivolve. So the kids need to go on a quest to liberate the Digital World and also discover the secret of digivolution, finding their crests along the way.

The list of crests for everyone goes:

Hot Rod: Courage

Jazz: Friendship

Perceptor: Knowledge

Arcee: Sincerity

Bumblebee: Hope

Tailgate: Light

Rung: ???

Megamon’s forces have recently picked up two digidestined who are fighting by their side: Starscream and Soundwave. Starscream is partnered to Megamon himself, and is basically a Digimon Emperor type character, an extremely power hungry kid whoa has become one of the Digicons best generals. Starscream is also followed by two rookie-level twin Seekermon called Thundercracker and Skywarp. They bother always seem to follow him and talk to him, but Starscream finds the two of them to be annoying hangers on who are always following him. They basically act as cute anime mascot characters at the start. Starscream carries the crest of Darkness created by Shockwavemon. Soundwave has Ravamon and the crest of Reliability, and is also seems to have amassed a small army of other rookie-level digimon who will follow her no matter what.

Windblademon also appears as the digidestined's guide, she's an ultimate-level and priestess of the ancient digimon god Primusmon, and she also seems to know more about Starscream than she's letting on.

Despite all this rambling it’s actually the SkyStar stuff I’ve figured out in the most detail (and carries the biggest segment of the plot). So I’ll place all the super spoilery and lengthy details under the cut:

As the AU goes on we gradually start to learn about who Starscream was an why he joined the Digicons. It was originally he and Skyfire who were the first kids to visit the Digital World, with Starscream bonded to Skywarp and Skyfire to Thundercracker. The two went on adventures together, becoming best friends and finding their crests. Skyfire had the crest of Kindness and it turns out Starscream’s was originally the crest of Love.

Then one day during an adventure in the digital worlds polar region Skyfire was kidnapped by a mysterious set of robot digimon and Starscream was unable to save him.

From that point on Starscream became obsessed with finding Skyfire, continuously searching the Digital World for any trace of him. Until one day he stumbled upon Megamon’s army, and Megamon offered him his resources to help find Sky if he teamed up with them. Starscream agreed and became extremely valuable to Megamon’s forces.

However, with Sky gone Starscream had trouble making his crest work so Skywarp only reached the ultimate level once and after that Starscream had trouble still proving he could be useful to the Digicon forces.

So it was that Shockwavemon eventually suggested giving Starscream the dark spores in order to make him smarter and more capable. It worked, but at the cost of Star becoming more power driven. When that still doesn’t work Shockwavemon suggested Starscream bond with Megamon and he went through with it, later taking Shockwavemon’s manufactured crest since he could no longer make the crest of Love glow at all.

It later turns out that Shockwavemon is actually the one who originally kidnapped Sky in the first place. He wanted to learn why digimon could no longer digivolve by themselves and why humans were necessary for digivolution to happen. He used Skyfire’s crest to create his own ones, creating the crest of Despair to siphon off Sky’s feelings of loneliness after his capture. And then the crest of Darkness for Starscream.

All the while he got to observe things from the sidelines and continue on his experiments (Probably there is also a subplot where he makes a Digimon called Jetfiremon from Sky’s data which can armour digivolve to multiple forms).

It later turns out that the reason Digimon can no longer digivolve is because Primusmon saw that digimon were becoming violent and using digivolution as a tool for power, so he made it that only digimon who could learn empathy via a partnership and also bring out the most positive of traits of their partner (love, courage, friendship, hope etc) would be the ones to digivolve.

It later turns out Rung is Primusmon in a human avatar intended to observe how digimon were doing. However, through Shockwavemon’s experimentation's he becomes able to digivolve without a partner and turns against Megamon, usurping him just as Starscream became twisted enough to allow him to digivolve to Galvamon.

Shockwavemon then realises Rung has the same code as the source code for the Digital World itself. In the super final big battle Shockwavemon kills Rung and then implants his code into the worlds source code and is able to reshape the Digital World into his image.

The Digidestined launch their attack against Shockwavemon, rescuing Skyfire and reuniting him with Starscream, which finally helps him to overcome the dark spores and regain the crest of Love. There’s a super big battle where everyone digivolves to the Mega level (including Star and Sky’s reunion allowing Warp and TC to Digivolve to Cyclonumon and Scourgemon respectively). And even Galvamon and Optimon DNA digivolve together to all defeat Shockwavemon and then finally the world is restored together.

“I thought you said it was a cabin,” Sunstreaker said, incredulous.

Sideswipe glanced up at him from where he was pulling suitcases from the back of the rented van. “It is a cabin.”

“No, it isn’t.” Sunstreaker shook his head. “This is a freaking hotel.”

There was a pearly laughter coming from behind him. “I’d say you exaggerate too much, but this time I actually think you’re right.” Raj stepped up next to him, looking up at the cabin in clear appreciation. “This is sheer luxury.”

The cabin really didn’t deserve such a mediocre name. It was a grand timber structure, something out of the wildest dreams of every architect who’d ever worked with the material, with large windows overlooking the front and elegant stone walls encircling the large deck.

Sunstreaker could see the promised hot tub from here. It even looked like there was a pool.

“Here,” Sideswipe said, pressing a suitcase handle into his hand. “Make yourself useful. You too, Raj.”

“Certainly.” Raj hefted his own two suitcases. “When are the others getting here?”

“They’re on their way,” Sideswipe replied. He jogged up the stone steps as if his own suitcase and bags of food weighed nothing at all. “Pax picked up Cliff and the others, and Magnus and Roddy will be here in a few hours. Magnus had to finish work, apparently.”

Sunstreaker had gotten to witness how fast Sideswipe made friends. It had taken him all of five minutes after being introduced to Sunstreaker’s neighbors before he had both of them eating out of Sideswipe’s hand.

Metaphorically speaking.

The only one allowed to eat out of Sideswipe’s hand was Sunstreaker. Sort of, anyway. Maybe.

The inside of the cabin was as grand as the outside. Raj was instantly at ease, old money that he was, sauntering off to one of the bedrooms.

“Remember you’re sharing!” Sideswipe called after him. It hadn’t taken him long to get a handle on Raj either.

“Yes, yes!” Raj waved a hand over his shoulder dismissively. “I know. I can be civil.”

Sideswipe put his bags down, and barely waited for Sunstreaker to do the same before pouncing him and pressing a kiss to the corner of his mouth. “He’s going to be an interesting cabin-mate, isn’t he?”

“He’ll behave,” Sunstreaker murmured against Sideswipe’s lips. “Or we’ll sic Magnus on him.”

Sideswipe laughed. “Deal.”

They stowed the groceries away together, then dragged their suitcases to the master bedroom. Sideswipe’s insistence – since they were technically the hosts, they were entitled to the nicest room.

Even if all they would be doing in there was sleeping. Sideswipe had promised.

In the middle of unpacking, Sideswipe’s phone beeped with an incoming message. He frowned as he read. “Dammit, Sky.”

“What now?” Sunstreaker raised a finger and touched the crunched-up eyebrows.

“Sky says he’s bringing his sister,” Sideswipe groaned. “Star’s an utter brat. She always makes drama, everywhere she goes.”

Sunstreaker shrugged. “We brought Raj. Worst comes to worst, we’ll just settle them in the hot tub together and lock the door. Then they can drama to their heart’s content.”

That earned him an evil grin as Sideswipe booped his nose. “I like the way you think.”

 They’d just finished eating dinner when Pax and the others arrived, their truck followed closely by TC’s smaller sedan. The next ten minutes were a whirlwind of introductions as Sunstreaker shook hands with more people than he’d ever met outside of an official mixer, trying desperately to fix names to faces.

Pax was simple. The man was a giant, as tall as Magnus, but with darker hair and a tendency towards stubble. He seemed friendly enough, though.

Jazz was a coiled bundle of energy, a sharp contrast to Jack’s (“Call me Jacky, everyone else does”) laidback, easy grin. Cliff had an easy grin but an even easier snarl – thankfully he seemed to be able to flip back and forth between the two, and though he was easy to ruffle he was also easy to distract.

TC was likeable enough, quiet and polite. His partner was almost his complete opposite, loud and rambunctious and joking and everything Sunstreaker wasn’t. And Sky’s little sister was every bit the dramaqueen Sideswipe had said she was, only with a cocky confidence and an attitude that would rival Raj’s on his best day.

Sunstreaker silently decided to let Sideswipe handle most of the interaction. At least until he felt more comfortable in what was quickly becoming a crowd. Especially when Magnus and Roddy arrived – Roddy seemed to hit it off with Sky instantly, just like he had with Sideswipe, and Magnus and Pax acted like old friends within minutes of meeting each other.

The volume in the living room was getting loud.

He held out for another half hour before leaving the room, claiming he was getting more wine.

Well, he was. He just took his time about it. Long enough that Sideswipe came to find him. Long arms wrapped around his arms, Sideswipe’s chin resting on his shoulder.

“Hiding?”

“Sorry,” he murmured. “It just…”

“Got to be a bit much,” Sideswipe finished for him. “I get it. Matching Roddy with Jazz and Sky may not have been one of my brightest ideas.” He nuzzled Sunstreaker’s neck. “Want to call it a night and go to bed? They won’t mind.”

“You sure?”

Sideswipe kissed his cheek. “I’m sure. We can do whatever we want. And I can guarantee you that if we go to bed now, Jack won’t stay another five minutes before he does too. And then Pax will do the same, if only to get away from Star. And then they’ll all cave one after another, and we’ll have to drag Jazz out of bed by his hair in the morning.”

Sunstreaker turned in Sideswipe’s arms so they were face to face. “Okay,” he whispered. “Let’s go say goodnight to the others, then.”

“Okay.” Sideswipe smiled up at him. “Come on.”

The last thing Thunderclash was expecting when he followed Rodimus out of Swerve's to try and apologise for ruining his night out with Drift was to end up on his knees in front of him, with Rodimus induldging one of his biggest and most sorely neglected kinks, but he's not exactly about to complain.

This story was a bit of an eye-opener to me. First, this was a fic about a kink that I really wasn’t interested in, but it was presented in a way that suddenly made me sit up and take notice.

And second, it’s a ship that I didn’t know I needed until now. Excellent story!

If one were to be delicate, one would say that Jazz and Prowl are incompatible.

The blunt truth?

'You just lie there with this blank expression on your face,' he'd been told by his last partner. Signal had stayed longer then most, willing to try since Prowl was so obviously doing his best, interfacing to please his partner and give him what Prowl himself disliked. In the end, though, it hadn't worked. 'You don't like me touching you, you don't like the mess, you don't even like the overload, and half the time I swear you're running economic simulations in your CPU you look that bored. I don't want that. I don't want you miserable, and I don't want me miserable, either.'

So why can't Prowl stop wishing?

This was a) my first introduction to “plug and play interfacing,” and b) the first “smutty” story I read that involved an asexual character. (I’ve since gone on and devoured @fuzipenguin‘s Love is Still Love series, which also has a wonderfully-written asexual Sunstreaker. I love that series as well!)

Prowl’s efforts to win Jazz over - and the description of how he actually succeeds, and what it does for Jazz - is the hottest thing I’ve ever read that doesn’t actually involve humanized sexual organs. Reading and “seeing” Jazz finally let go and trust Prowl was so… Hnnnrgh. Love it.

Creator Spotlight Series: Tc-5

Tell us a little bit about yourself

I am an electronic music producer from Austria and call myself "Tc-5" or "THE CØSMIC EFFECT". I actually spend all my time on music, sports and school!

What inspired you to start making music?

It’s actually a pretty long story, but I’ll tell you anyway. It was back in the day when I was playing a lot of different video games. I was searching for background music to listen to when I’m gaming, and I asked a friend what he listens to usually. He said he mainly listens to Monstercat. So I checked out their channel and was amazed by all the cool music and great artists. 

I then had a strong urge to make the same style of music myself, so I searched for "Online Music Maker Programs" and found a free online DAW. And that’s where it all started. First I only used loops and samples, but later learned how to make my own melodies and instruments. Then a friend told me about FL Studio and claimed it’s a lot better than a free online DAW, so I gave it a try and downloaded the demo. It was love at the first try. 

Tell us about your approach to writing and production.

Usually I get ideas for new songs by just listening to music. I then open up FL Studio and begin with a simple melody or a unique instrument. When I have a good idea down and I get inspired I don’t get away from producing till the early morning hours…

What programs, equipment and other tools do you use when producing?

For a DAW I use FL Studio. I also use a lot of good 3rd party VST plugins like Serum, Sylenth1, Nexus, and Spire. I actually don’t have any studio headphones, but I do have really good monitors. I bought the Neumann KH 120 A‘s and they're awesome. I’ll get the matching subwoofer soon! As an interface I use the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 2nd Gen. 

How has Clyp played a role in your production process?

I always used Clyp to share previews of upcoming tracks and get feedback. At first I didn’t have an account, but then I found that it’s pretty cool to see the process I’ve made over time and look back at my old WIP’s!

How does the feedback you get influence your production and creation process?

I think feedback is a REALLY important step of music production. It’s a great way to improve my music and get opinions from other people. Also when I mix a new song, I get too used to hearing it and don’t notice if a particular part sounds bad. That’s why it’s important to share it with others so they can point out what sounds bad so I can improve it. 

Can you share something you’re currently working on?

This is a very experimental type of project for me because I never tried that genre before. But when I started with the melody I really couldn't think of another genre that would fit so I tried melodic dubstep. And to be honest, I'm really proud of what I've done.

Who are your influences at the moment?

That’s a pretty hard question since I listen to nearly EVERY type of music. I even listen to classical and jazz music. But I get most of my influence from electronic producers like Alan Walker, K-391, Don Diablo and KSHMR. I also get inspired by some Galantis and Martin Garrix songs!

Any tips or advice for other creators/producers/musicians?

Keep working. There truly are no shortcuts around hard work. But the good news is that if you really work your ass off and put in a ton of hours, you will get really good!

Pushing Off From Shore...

In June of 2016, my wife/bandmate Denny and I relocated from North Carolina (a lifetime home for Denny and a longtime home for myself) to Memphis, Tennessee. We renamed our musical project from Lost Trail to Nonconnah to reflect the move and begin anew with a fresh slate, and in honor of Memphis waterway Nonconnah Creek. We soon purchased a home on the outskirts of Memphis, in rural Fayette County, which came complete with a spacious former beauty salon attached to the garage. This was to become our new recording space, and to remark upon its former usage, we named it Ghost Salon. Now, in April of 2017, as we near the end of our first year of adjusting to new environs and friends, that space is ready for use.   As I’ve said in interviews and in person, the new Nonconnah album is going to differ from Lost Trail’s work in a number of ways. Nonconnah will be more collaborative in spirit than Lost Trail, bringing in a number of musically-inclined (and maybe non-musically-inclined) friends from across the earth, but especially aiming to utilize the diverse musical community in Memphis as much as possible. The work will still be thoroughly experimental, but less hemmed-in by particulars of genre; ambient and drone are beautiful shades, but there’s many more colors to paint with. Most importantly, this is going to be a large-scale, long-form project. No more churning out endless streams of music like Robert Pollard on a meth bender. We’re taking the time to carefully craft what we do, and it will take years to get it right, probably with a host of leftovers to show for it. This is an ambitious project covering a huge number of themes and sub-themes, and it will incorporate many visuals and writings as well as a (surely lengthy) collection of music. I’ll expand on the feelings and moods behind the album as the recording comes together. Right now, it’s all a drifting haze of half-built comprehensions, and who knows where these sessions will take us?  I hope to alter many of my ingrained work habits in this project, focusing more on the particulars of layering and mixing than in the past, using a wider array of instruments, and re-learning how to read notation as well as (hopefully) improve my piano and vocal skills. I’ve purchased a whiteboard for longhand idea scrawling, and I’m starting this blog as a way to document the minutiae of the album’s sessions as they come together (I’ve tried this before and not stuck with it, hopefully this time will be different). Denny will also be contributing more in the way of instruments themselves on this album, in addition to her field recording work. In many ways it’s still Lost Trail, but in many ways it isn’t. I think our best work is yet to come. So let’s begin.  Today, 04/12/17, was the first day I spent a considerable amount of time in the studio. I had planned to start the recording process in earnest the previous week, but an unfortunate accident involving a pitcher of lemonade and my Macbook Air meant I was delayed while a replacement shipped to us. Now I’m working with an older Macbook Pro, which despite its age I’m enjoying much more than the Air (it’s more solidly built, with more memory and a DVD drive). Here’s hoping it survives these sessions. I spent today rebuilding my guitar pedalboard, a tedious but necessary task involving much yanking of velcro and untangling of wires. I have a good dozen or more pedals in addition to the ones now on the board, some of them ‘nicer’ than what I put in place today, but this is what I’m feeling is right for the beginning of this album (I’ll probably change everything in a month or so, anyway). For example, there’s considerable snobbery in the guitar pedal world concerning Behringer pedals, but they’re ample Boss clones as long as you use them gently, considerate of their cheap plastic housing. I had hoped to upgrade all my pedals earlier in the year, but life expenses got in the way. So it goes. I’m nothing if not an old pro at making do with what I have available on-hand, and I’m lucky to have a wealth of plug-ins on board, as well. As in the past, I’ll mostly be using GarageBand and Audacity for tracking, and my Zoom H2, in an effort to keep things simple. I’ll experiment with other DAWs as time goes on, though I’ve never liked being overwhelmed with options. The new signal chain follows... On this album I plan to play - electric guitar, acoustic guitar, classical guitar, banjo, dulcimer, glockenspiel, piano, accordion, harpsichord, chord organ, electric organ (I picked up a Baldwin Fun Machine not too long ago), drums, synthesizers, drum machine, music box, wine glasses, lap steel, Marxophone, melodica, violin, yerbonitsa, mandolin, hand percussion, bowed cymbal, bowed tape recorder (I built one myself), theremin and voice. Others, and Denny, will contribute these and other instruments. I’m going to mostly leave it in folks’ hands what they contribute. Though I own a number of guitars and amps, and plan to use them all, my main electric for this album will be my Reverend Ron Asheton signature, and my main amp will be my Roland Jazz Chorus 60. This is what I mostly use live lately, and I think it’s a setup that I’m comfortable creating with.

Before sleep tonight, I’m going to begin the long and arduous process of going back through my ‘demos’ folder and picking likely candidates to be fleshed out into full songs (this is also new for me, I’ve never demo’d for an album before). Since early July of 2015, I’ve been recording bits and ideas and rough demos with whatever instrument was on hand, wherever I found myself (a friend’s ukulele while house-sitting in Carrboro, NC, a broken piano by the side of the road in Snow Camp. NC). This, along with collected field recordings from the past nearly two years gathered by myself and Denny, has swelled into quite a gargantuan of .wavs. Now it’s time to parse strong ideas from weak; I hope I’m up to the task of judging these snippets. Tomorrow I plan to at least test out the new Apogee USB interface I picked up, and see if it’s as suitable for line-in recording as I hope. If I’m lucky, I may be able to find some time to begin proper recording before the end of the day. I’ll keep you posted as to my progress. Until then! I think my short term disability due to giving birth got messed up?

So I want on leave on May 20th due to best rest. I used all my vacation and leftover sick time, and the rest is paid by short term disability, a total of about 9 weeks total. My boss had never handled maternity leave before, and I think he did it wrong. I figured they would mail me something else to tell me the payment was late but I never received anything else about it. Well I found out later it was because I moved, even though I moved about 2 months after the fact they wait quite a while to send another notice, and I never received it. Thus, my license was suspended but I never knew. I never got caught driving without it either. So I moved here in 2007 with my Jeep which I was very behind payments for, and then it got towed away for alternate side parking BS. I could have borrowed the money back then to pay to get it out but I let it go. Alright so long story short, I don't have the truck, it was auctioned. I'll be done paying for it through a collection agency settlement offer this May. If I had kept the truck, I would be paying 200+ more a month than I pay now, and I wouldn't have been done paying it til August 2011. Plus I would have had to pay to catch it up the 3 months I was behind, plus pay my boyfriends brother back who was willing to lend me the money to get it out of the car jail (lol) I had the suspension lifted last July so I could rent a car, again no issues. So I'm thinking of buying a 2,000 car (cash! I learned my lesson) in June when I'm done paying for the truck and I want to get no fault insurance. I know it will be a lot more here then what I used to pay, and in addition I now have a suspension that wasn't there before. We wanted to switch from the local company we had been insuring our house with because their correspondance has always been very rude and they are very difficult to deal with to USAA who we do all of our banking, brokerage, car & boat insurance through and are very courteous and extremely easy to deal with. We were denied coverage because our home does not have central air or heating. We live in South Central Florida so a heating system would be an absolute waste of money (the wall unit in the Great Room and a space heater in the bedroom are more than sufficient to make the house hospitable in the few welcome days of winter cold enough to warrant their use). My wife and I both cannot stand Air Conditioning and would never use Central A/C other than the one or two times a year we would normally turn on our wall unit when it is too hot to bear and the windows and doors cannot be left open. Houses have existed for Milleniums prior to the invention of Central Climate Control and I am sure home insurance existed atleast a few decades before the invention of air conditioning. Why would not having central climate control be a disqualifying factor in getting home insurance coverage? I highly doubt that not having A/C or heat is going to make our house any more likely to be damaged or destroyed in a hurricane, robbed or flooded. Opening the windows and doors instead of having a HVAC system consistantly running in our house makes us less suseptable to fire.""

This might be long but PLEASE READ EVERYTHING. When I was 15 my grandfather (Legally my father, always lived with him) had always promised me he would get me driver's ed but he never did. Rocking With The Dawn’s Francis Reyes and Rommel “Sancho” Sanchez

I've seen and heard many Filipino bands, but no other band (in my opinion at least) in the country stood as strong as The Dawn. This band celebrates 32 years of making and playing music. I had the pleasure of watching them perform live at the Philippine Digital Convention 2017, where I handled tech booth duties. I am honored to feature the band’s guitar players, Francis Reyes and Rommel "Sancho" Sanchez.

How did the band evolve ever since you guys got in the band and did your musical influences change along the way?

Francis: I think every guitar player who has been with the band—from Teddy Diaz to Atsushi Matsuura to myself to Kenneth Ilagan to Sancho, and some of the duo guitar times— changes the sound of the band, but it always manages to sound like the band. When I first joined in ‘89, I was heavily into Living Colour and injected a bit of that. Living Colour has hard rock and funk in equal footing, plus jazz, prog, pop, and every other element that can inject into their music, and The Dawn has always been like that as well. I mean, listen to the first The Dawn album and there’s a lot of things going on, even if the image and overall tone was supposedly “new wave.” I got into other things when the band went on hiatus and when we reconvened in late-99, I was into Drum ’n Bass and Trip-Hop in general— and JB was into house music— and injected a wee bit of that.

Sancho: I guess it was natural for me, growing up in Olongapo City where there were a lot of good bands, and I would see them play live during the then annual Mardi Gras festivities. My father also had a collection of vinyl LPs and then cassettes so inherited it assimilated his love for music. 

Francis: Sancho and I still haven’t really explored what we can do together, but the possibilities manifest whenever we jam or rehearse. Exciting times!

I try to keep an open ear with what’s current in music and if I like whatever it is, it does influence me to an extent and I bring it back to the band. The Dawn is like a lab and playground for me… well for all of us really.

The other stuff may inspire or motivate you sometimes, but the spark, that desire to express something should only come from you.

What got you guys into music? And into guitar playing in particular?

Francis: Queen was the first band that I absolutely fanboyed over; still do actually. However, Brian May didn’t inspire me to pick up the guitar. His stuff was beyond guitar—I mean he simulated horn sections and string sections with that Red Special of his— and therefore way beyond my teenage aspirations. Then I heard Ritchie Blackmore’s wild reckless intro to “Speed King,” and THAT got me hooked.

It’s only in the last couple of years that I’ve attempted to learn some Brian May licks. His tone has always been a reference point though, and The Edge too.

Sancho: As part of an extra-curricular activity in grade school, I joined the rondalla and a chose the guitar as my instrument, having seen my father play kundiman on the guitar. It was love at first strum.

Let's talk guitars. What do you guys usually bring live aside from the ones here?

Francis: The Tokai Les Paul Custom-type is the only one I use live. At home, I have another Tokai, a Strat-style and I used to bring it too but I snapped off the vibrato arm. I love Stratocasters, and I love using the vibrato so it’s at home until I can get the vibrato block replaced. I also have an MIJ 57/62 Reissue Fender Strat and sometimes I bring it as a backup and a beautiful Tele Thinline from Vinci Montaner of Parokya Ni Edgar. It’s on a long-term loan, and only because he’s a friend and a wonderfully generous person.

Sancho: My main axe is a yellow Yamaha Revstar. I have a Japan-made Barclay guitar as a backup in case I break a string mid-set.

I gotta say, your rigs are really cool. Tell us more about how they work, which ones you can never do a gig without, and how you use everything during the sets.

Francis: My pedalboard is basically three different distortions plus three delays. I used to have a multi-effects unit which has its own set of advantages but I like combining different pedals to get, hopefully, unique sounds or tones. I also have a Budda Wah and a Digitech Whammy Pedal.

I have a little Zoom Multistomp for ambient delays and synth-like washes, a Line 6 DL-4 for basic additional delays and looping, and the Tech 21 Fly Rig’s Delay section for an “always on, tweak on-the-fly”  delay. The Fly Rig’s Amp sim is always on; I set it flat so whether through an amp or straight to the board, I get a consistent signal. I also have a Tech 21 Liverpool which is my go-to distortion/overdrive; I can’t live without it! I also have a Z Vex Fuzz Factory to get Hendrix-y octave-up sounds when cascaded with either the Fly Rig’s Plexi distortion or the Liverpool.

Sancho: I have a simple rig. I have a Morley Bad Horsie 2 Wah Pedal going into a TC Electronic Polytune and the Xotic RC Booster, then to a Boss Overdrive, then into a Tech21 FlyRig which I use for its amp simulation, as a secondary drive, and for its nifty analog delay section. That goes into a TC Electronic Nova System for various modulation and pitch effects, then into a Boss DD-20 Giga Delay. I won't survive a gig without the Giga Delay.

What amps do you use at home?

Francis: A 3-Watt Blackstar Fly. It’s the best micro-amp, ever! Big tones on that. I have a little Hotone Ravo Multi-effects Unit if I want to explore textural ideas, plus a Pedal Pimps Nitro distortion made by Jay Padua. Pedal Pimps pedals are Philippine-made, and they rock!

Sancho: I use Blackstar amps at home.

What do your kids listen to?

Francis: My kids are into my songs and riffs and I hope they listen to each other and make sense together! LOL!

Sancho: No kids, only two cats and they listen to whatever I listen to. 

What is your advice to people who want to play their music out there and do their thing, as well as aspiring guitar players?

Sancho: If you don't love what you're doing, don't do it. You're out there to entertain and please the crowd but you should also be having fun doing it. If you're not happy with or don't believe in the music you're playing, your bandmates and the audience will feel it.

Francis: Love it for the music, and don’t let the other stuff —fame, vices, female fans etc. LOL— get in the way. The other stuff may inspire or motivate you sometimes, but the spark, that desire to express something should only come from you.

Learn how the industry works. And it will not always be a pleasant experience.

Keep your ears open.

Pray: for clarity of mind, spirit, and gratitude.  

And learning is forever… there will always be a challenge: technical, theoretical, tonsorial… LOL!

What did you learn for being in the OPM world for a long while?

Francis: Patience. LOL!

Sancho: OPM is far from dead, really.

[THE STAGE] MEELAH WILLIAMS [ @itmseelah ]: STRENGTH OF LOVE

It’s so wonderful to reconnect with Meelah Williams. As most know, Williams has been venturing into the world of acting over the past few years, and she’s now taking a lead in The Baz Brothers production, Strength of Love. It’s an amazing story of love, forgiveness, and all the craziness that can happen in between. Strength of Love will be showing Valentine’s weekend in Griffin, GA. 

 We took some time to chat with Ms. Williams about her role in this stage play, and what the world can expect from her first leading role. 

 U.G. Digital Mag: I’m most grateful to you for a few things; one for you sharing your time with me today. Also, you were a tremendous part of our first issue. I’m always forever thankful to you. 

 Meelah Williams: Thank you for the opportunity. I’m grateful that you even gave me that platform. 

 U.G. Digital Mag: So we’re together for Strength of Love, but before I even start, I have to get your thoughts on the New Edition movie, considering how instrumental Michael Bivens was in the careers of 702. 

 Meelah Williams: It really is outstanding. I’ve only seen two parts so far, but the actors have done an amazing job. The actors were spot on. I was there for some of it, but to see it on television, it’s refreshing to see the other side of the industry. A lot of people who want to do this often forget about the other side. It’s not always the glitz and glamour. It’s refreshing that they opened themselves up and allowed them[the actors] to be there with them. I had no idea that they went through all the things they did. It was like 1996 for the Home Again tour. We were clueless to a lot of what happened behind the scenes, but there were times when we definitely felt the tension. 

 U.G. Digital Mag: When you mention how spot on they were, the kids were really amazing. 

 Meelah Williams: I know, right? 

 U.G. Digital Mag: The one who play Mike looked just like him. 

 Meelah Williams: Isn’t that crazy? I asked where did they find that kid. He had that same swag, cocky arrogance, and the whole Boston swag. Clearly Mike and everyone was instrumental in picking the characters that played them, but it’s amazing they found someone so close. Those kids did an amazing job. The casting for Brooke Payne as well, which was the guy from the wire, Wood Harris. I've got to catch up with part 3 now. 

 U.G. Digital Mag: It’s funny because my son is 10, and he’s enamored with the movie. 

 Meelah Williams: I’m disappointed I missed last night, but I will definitely catch it. 

 U.G. Digital Mag: So Strength of Love, it’s such an amazing story. I saw the first run of it last year, so it’s good to see it back. How is it for you to come in this time around?

 Meelah Williams: First, I’m just humbled and flattered for someone to reach out and ask of my interest. It’s always a blessing after all this time that people still call and seek my talent. Everyone has been so welcoming. I knew Chandra Currelley because I worked with her for Kandi Burruss’ A Mother’s Love. I was so excited to see Mrs. Chandra again. She’s always great, professional, and so cool. The woman knows what she is doing. I look at her like an auntie. She’s so magical, and anytime I’m in her presence, I’m in awe. She’s so multifaceted. I have to see one of her shows because I love jazz. She’s like someone you’ve known for years. When you go into an ensemble of new people, you never know how it will be. The directors and writers are so chill and laid back. By the second or third rehearsal, they were like family. They’re serious too, but they know how to have fun and make you feel comfortable. 

 U.G. Digital Mag: There's something special about The Baz Brothers. Chandra is amazing too, and her background with S.O.S. Band is something else. 

 Meelah Williams: Listen! That’s good music. 

 U.G. Digital Mag: But it’s just knowing all she’s done and how humble she is, and how welcoming she is. She’s simply amazing. You have a family of people for sure. 

 Meelah Williams: I’m so grateful. The opportunity is so cool. It’s my third stage play, but the first time I’ve been a leading character. It’s humbling, and exciting to pursue something like this. It’s a blessing to get the acting chops going and the blood flowing. It’s a different level of entertainment coming from the music world. 

 U.G. Digital Mag: You character has so much depth. How was it to tap into that?

 Meelah Williams: It’s interesting because I had this conversation with my mother. It can be very draining at times. That goes for acting in general because you have to morph into these characters and tune into that space. Every nuance and characteristic that your character embodies, you have to align with that. After tomorrow, we’re no longer called by our real names. I have to get into that zone. Her story is so deep, and it’s deep to have to go there. You have to tap into things that may be uncomfortable from your own life and path. You have to find something that’s parallel in some sense to help you convey the emotions. I didn’t know it would be this deep. If that’s what it takes, then let me do this. It’s all in being an actor. 

 U.G. Digital Mag: Everyone is looking forward to it. What are your hopes for the three days?

 Meelah Williams: I hope that those who come out, whether it’s to see me, someone else, or they're just interested, are satisfied. I hope they enjoy everything they see and are not disappointed in my acting, or on any level. I hope they see my passion, and know that I’m working to take this to another level. This is just the beginning. 

 U.G. Digital Mag: Again, I think you’re so amazing with this. I’ve followed since 702. I’ve watched the R&B Divas, and could really appreciate how you stuck to your guns in terms of portrayal, and what people saw in you. You protected your image, and that was major. Thank you for that. 

 Meelah Williams: I appreciate that. It’s hard. Unfortunately, the business has changed so much from the time 702 came out until now. The values are different, with social media, and reality shows. If you are someone who’s wholesome, or “a good girl”, you come off as boring, dull, and as having no personality. If I’m not flipping over a table, cursing someone out, or just being flat out ignorant, I have no personality. I have layers to me and I’m complex. I just want to be decent on television because it’s how I was raised. Does that mean I can’t defend myself in a situation? Of course not, but will I be confrontational? That’s not my way. I thank you for acknowledging that though. 

 U.G. Digital Mag: There’s more who look for what you offer than there are who look for the craziness. It doesn’t seem so at times, but there are. 

 Meelah Williams: It’s frustrating because I have ratchet tendencies (laughing). If you take me there, for instance about my son, or my family, you’ll see the turn up. I’ve been taught to be classy. I am human though, and don’t always know how to turn the other cheek, but I try to be pretty chill. I plan on doing reality TV again, maybe if I have creative control. 

 U.G. Digital Mag: I would love to see it. The last time we spoke, we talked a lot about your foundation. I would love to see more about that. 

 Meelah Williams: Thank you! Yes. That was the other thing with my story line on R&B Divas. We touched on it, and I guess that was the basis of it, but I wanted to focus more on that. Moving forward, there have been some ideas out there. I’ve been approached, being an autism mom. 

 U.G. Digital Mag: There’s so many people who deal with it [autism], but you touch a lot of people with your story and they really benefit from it. 

 Meelah Williams: It needs to be talked about more. I respect everyone’s wishes because I too wasn’t sure in the beginning if I wanted to put it out there. It’s definitely private and personal. They have that right, but those of us who do want to talk, I think we should. A lot of parents don’t know how to handle it. It’s not an easy thing or a walk in the park. There’s several levels, even mild levels. It’s challenging, but life has challenges. I think it would be cool in the African Amercian community to touch on it, even with mental illness. We don’t touch on it much. We just sweep it under the rug. Unfortunately, where there’s no communication, other issues arise. It’s like, this could be prevented if we just talk about it. 

 U.G. Digital Mag: Can you talk about other things you’re working on or have coming up?

 Meelah Williams: I actually just signed a record deal with Soulstar / E1 music. This will be my solo debut album. It feels like I’ve been doing solo music for a while and I’ve had singles here and there, but this will be my first body of work. 

 U.G. Digital Mag: Knowing of Soulstar, and your music, you’re in the perfect place. They can really get it out there. 

 Meelah Williams: Thank you so much. It’s a good feeling to be in this space with complete and creative control. I can zone out and figure out what I want to do sonically. A lot of people still don’t know who I am. It feels good to create a project that is all me. I just started recording a few weeks ago, so I’m in the very beginning stages. I’m not rushing it, but it may be around late summer or the end of 2017. I’m looking for a super successful album. It’s still so premature that I don’t even have a title yet. 

 U.G. Digital Mag: People like myself, and your entire fanbase, knowing you have something coming, it’s more than enough for us. You gave us “Give It to You” a few years ago, and then it was like OK, we’re waiting. 

 Meelah Williams: I know. I was kinda teasing y’all a bit (laughing), with Stupid in love, a great single written by TC, but I just do a little bit to hold y’all over (laughing). 

 U.G. Digital Mag: Well we’re waiting patiently [laughing]. How can everyone keep up with you online?

 Meelah Williams: All my social media handles are @ItsMeelah for Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. It’s the same for my website [www.itsmeelah.com], but I’m revamping everything. I’m under new management, with a new label, new "er’thang (laughing). I don’t have a snapchat, and don’t y’all come for me (laughing). I think I’m the only one in the world who don’t have one. 

 U.G. Digital Mag: I’ll keep it real with you. I can’t get with it [Snapchat]. I don’t know what the hell I’m doing [laughing]. 

 Meelah Williams: We’re neck and neck. I’m already giving y’all all of me in three other places, what more do you want? [laughing]

 U.G. Digital Mag: It’s crazy. I can’t figure it out, but my ten year old has it down to a science. 

 Meelah Williams: At least Instagram tried to help us out. It’s all inclusive there. Y’all wanna see what’s up with me, follow me on Instagram.
