We were divided into small groups of four and with our collective and individual knowledge and experiences we worked on our assigned cases. Using drawlots, our group was tasked to strategize/brainstorm/provide a solution for a topic that remains to be a taboo and illegal in our country: abortion.

I understand that as you go about reading this you may or may not approve on our answer. I will understand that. I would also like to point out that the scenarios provided are fictitious and not at all real. However, as students and as feminist, we answered these questions thinking they are, in fact, real people in real situations in the hopes to "treat" it with more urgency, care, and respect.

As I explain how it went for our team, and to make it more precise, I will re-type the instructions and sets of questions given to us.

Here it goes:

As a policymaker, you must choose which woman will be able to receive a safe, legal abortion. You can only choose one candidate. Reflect on each of these scenarious and your rationale for choosing the one candidate (and not choosing the others). Be ready to present your decision to the bigger group.

1. A 17-year old woman in her first year at the university just found out that she is 8-weeks pregnant. Denied contraception by her health-care provider because she is unmarried and because of her young age, she and her boyfriend tried to use natural birth control methods, however their attempts failed. She does not feel financially or emotionally ready to become a mother, and wants to finish her studies. She is the first person from her poor, rural village to attend university.

2. A 15-year olf girl is 12 weeks pregnant as a result of rape by her stepfather. She is worried about her risk and the baby's risk of HIV. She is already struggling to feed two children, and doesn't know how she will be able to feed a third.

4. A 24-year old woman is engaged to her 27 year old boyfriend of the past three years. They plan to be married, so the unplanned pregnancy initially didn't upset them too much. However, they have learned that her diabetes will likely make her permanently blind if the pregnancy is carried to term.

5. A 12-year old girl is persuaded by a boy in the grade above her, whom she admires, to have sex with him. He does not like condoms and refuses to use one. Her lack of sexuality education leaves her unable to negotiate safe sex. Since she does not have regular periods yet, and has limited knowledge about pregnancy, it takes a long time before she realizes that she is pregnant. Now she is in her second trimester, and she is growing increasingly depressed and scared about her situation.

Difficult, right?

Well, to tell you the truth the team all agreed that each of these women DESERVE to have SAFE and LEGAL ABORTION should they wish to have one. And so, given the circumstances and the instruction to pick only one of these candidates has been proven difficult for us all.

But I'll go ahead and tell you our answer. We picked candidate no. 2.

Some of you may agree, some of you may not. But allow me to explain why we picked candidate no. 2, and believe me, it was a difficult choice to make. Also, you have to take into consideration that we are working with little knowledge and background on each of these fictitious women. We are basing our answer on the provided information which is composed of only 2-3 sentences (1 paragraph). Very limited knowledge.

Here's why:

1. All other candidates had consensual sex (it's a different case for candidate no. 5, and I will explain that later). Candidate no. 1, although legally minor, had consensual sex with her boyfriend and it was unfortunate that they were both denied contraception by their health-care provider and proceeded with natural birth control methods. Candidate no. 3, is married with two kids, and had consensual sex with her husband. Unfortunately, both of them proceeded to have unprotected sex (resulting to her third pregnancy) even when the husband has a history with sex workers (and may or may not have contracted HIV). Candidated no. 4 had consensual sex with her fiance. However, her pregnancy may result to blindness, due to her diabetes, if she decides to carry her term.

Now, for candidate no 5. and this is where it gets tricky. Our team and I believe that the 12-year old candidate is JUST AS DESERVING as candidate no. 2. She's freaking 12!!!! She's too young to be carrying a baby!! However, if we had to weigh it between candidate no. 2 and candidate no. 5, we believe that candidate no. 2 needs the abortion more. Now, candidate no. 5 was persuaded to have sex with a boy that she admires, this is where the "consent" gets tricky. She was persuaded by a boy he admires--which leaves us (my team and I) to assume that she may have hesitations about it but since she likes the boy she went on and had sex with him.

Which leaves us to candidate no. 2. She was raped. She. Was. Raped. By her stepfather. Not to mention, her mom is also abused by her stepfather. She did not have consensual sex. She was caught off guard. She was attacked. She was degraded. SHE WAS RAPED. She didn't want any of this to happen--not even to her mom. She didn't deserve what happened to her and if she wants to have an abortion--then she should.

2. Financial stability. It's unfortunate that most of our candidates have financial problems. But that's the reality of it. My team and I tried working our way around it by thinking of possible solutions/scenarios for each of these women's financial problems. Candidate no. 1 came from a poor, rural village and she is the first to attend the university. I have no doubt in my mind that she is a smart woman and can apply for financial aid (or scholarship) either from her school or from her municipality until she graduates. Her parents/family can care for her child until she starts earning. Candidate no. 3, is a 30 year old woman. She admitted that she is struggling to feed two children and can't afford a third one. Given her husband's history with alcohol and sex workers, the wife can negotiate with the husband to give up alcohol and the sex workers so that they can afford to feed their third child, now, obviously that won't be easy to do. My team and I are also assuming that the husband may be mentally/emotionally unstable, hence the alcohol and sex workers, but if this doesn't work--the wife, who is 30 years old, has the capacity to work. Candidate no. 4 seems financially stable. Plus, she has been engaged with her boyfriend for three years now which leaves us to assume that they are already saving up for their future family. Candidate no. 5, has no mention or whatsoever about her financial stabilty. Which leaves us to assume that she may come from a well-off family. As young as her age, we are assuming that her family can take care of her child while she finishes her school. Candidate no. 2, raped by her stepfather, attends public school. Which leaves us, again, to assume that she also, like almost the rest of the candidates, is not financially ready to become a mother. This strengthens our decision to pick candidate no. 2 to have the safe and legal abortion.

3. A case of word play. Again, my team and I are working with whatever little knowledge we have. And with little information about each of these fictitious women, it has become a case of word play. Again, and I cannot emphasize enough, my team and I believe that all of these women deserve to have safe and legal abortion. Their body, their right. However, we are tasked to pick only one candidate, based on their situation, to have the safe and legal abortion. Candidate no. 1, still has a future ahead of her. One unwanted pregnancy can't stop her from achieving her potential. It may take longer for her to achieve her dreams given that she is no longer just thinking about herself but also her baby, she may have setbacks--but she will get there. In candidate no. 3 situation, it said "She is worried about her risk and the baby's risk of HIV." RISK. Meaning, it is not yet verified whether or not she (or her baby) has contracted the HIV. And since this has become a case of word play, we may assume that she may not be able to contract the sickness at all. Same goes for candidate no. 4, it said that her diabetes she "will likely make her permanently blind if the pregnancy is carried to term" WILL LIKELY. So, we have to take that 50/50 percent chance that she MAY NOT get blind if she decides to push through with her pregnancy.

4. Moral/Immoral. Now this is on a more personal note. The fact that candidate no. 2 was raped by stepfather--was for me, enough to send her to the clinic to get that abortion. She deserves to have that abortion. She was raped. SHE WAS RAPED. She was attacked, degraded, insulted, direspected--she was raped. She didn't deserve that. Now, I may get a few sad reactions here and there, but this won't change my mind.

Conclusion:

This task of picking one candidate truly has been exhausting for us. But my team and I firmly believe that we made the right decision. We hope that we never have to face a future where we only have to pick one candidate for any women who DESERVES to have an abortion.

Now, going back to the title of this reflection:

ABORTION: Do we really get to have a say who deserves to have one or not?

As a feminist, I believe that no one gets to have a say who deserves to have an abortion other than the one who is pregnant. It is her body. It is her say. It is her right. IT'S HER DECISION TO MAKE and NO ONE ELSE'S.

I hope that one day, in this country, women get to have a choice if they want to keep their pregnancy or not. I hope that one day, Filipino women will have access to SAFE AND LEGAL ABORTION. I hope that rules and regulations on their bodies won't be anyone's concern other than themselves.

The Evolutions Of Hell

Thiess the Livonian Werewolf had a very straightforward Hell to invade: a physically accessible place, located beyond a watery passage to the underworld (which seems likely to me to be a survival of something related to the Slavic myths of Veles, in which the chthonic cattle-lord god is ruler of the waters, and who, post-Christianisation, was partially recast as a Devil figure). It contained stolen things – field fertility, cattle blessings, and so on – which could be retrieved for the good of the community. (And indeed the earlier court conflict which made Thiess’s werewolfing more known in his village seems to have raised his status, possibly because people recognised him as someone who would go to great lengths for the common good.) For all that it was framed in Christian terms, it was not theologised in a Christian form – it was a thieves’ den staffed by the enemies of God, not otherwise made more complex with matters of sin, punishment, or even damnation. The nuances of orthodox theology were lost on Thiess, who claimed not to understand them.

It is less clear in what I know of this narrative what the Devil’s sorcerers got out of their end of the deal. Access to the food and resources stolen from the collective, perhaps, or magical powers inaccessible to ordinary folk – presaging, perhaps, the capitalist-imperial model in which certain forms of wealth and power render one immune to consequences. A guess might be that the sorcerers wished to be removed from the risks of community – when the collective status rose or fell, they did not wish to be bound to the same fate as others, and would make whatever deals it took to protect themselves and their families.

It is quite likely that they felt that those stored-up supplies were rightfully theirs – after all, they worked to bring the grain to harvest as well. Crop failure wasn’t fair, and wouldn’t anyone do what it takes to stave off starvation? “You wouldn’t want to see my children waste away, would you?” they might say. Security, certainty, the preservation of life itself, those were worth a deal with the Devil, who was, after all, only building a granary.

Perhaps the werewolves seemed to them the one on the Devil’s side. “I’ve done everything I can to protect my own, and here come these thieves in the night. They steal cattle and tear them apart to fund their burglary, they venture into the granary I helped build, they take the seed that I helped put there….” You can see it, right?

Here’s the interesting trick to it: regardless of whether or not I would place each of those people among the Devil’s partisans, all of them are opposed to this theological concept of Hell, this place into which the essentialities of life vanish and leave people bereft. For the most part, people have worked to close the gates of the Hell that they understand. Some may do it out of concern for whole communities, a more expansive care; others may do it to secure a better place for themselves, their families, because being able to provide for others gives them status and security, or whatever else. But the Devil’s party and those who steal back from them, whichever political faction one aligns with them, are agreed that their communities need food and there must be mechanisms to attain that end.

So, with this underlying model of Hell, we see that, over time, people as a collective close the gates of Hell when they find them and feel able, more or less. There is a general trend to come up with technologies, understandings, and worldviews that make existence feel less threatened. And this has two effects, for an ontology of Hell.

One is that the techniques to close a Hellmouth are just as effective at opening one. Perhaps more so. And it doesn’t take much to get people to use them – to decide that their own personal power or wealth (or greater certainty of survival) is worth a price that other people will pay. There is enough food produced in the world, at the moment, but its distribution is affected by corporations, by individuals seeking power, by forces that are rather abstract and inaccessible on the scale of the individual human. And many of those forces are at best indifferent to humanity as a whole, and even less invested in the non-human web of being, and easily harnessed by someone operating as one of the Devil’s sorcerers, wanting to secure their own position at the cost of the common good. (And this gets worse for topics other than food – though gods know there are plenty of Purity Of Food arguments out there in various forms and I need to write more food theology – I mean, how many people have thought that the way to abolish the Hellmouths of War was to have weapons too scary to actually use? That’s the entire fucking Cold War in a genetically engineered nutshell.)

And it’s easier to be tempted to the Devil’s party than it used to be. As the networks go global, the consequences to the community are more likely to wind up Not In My Backyard. If several tons of food are destroyed here, well, it’s not the people here that might suffer, it would’ve been shipped thousands of miles away. The runoff from that leaky pipeline isn’t in my water, it’s in water over there, and maybe I need that oil, did you ever think of that? “You wouldn’t want to see my children waste away, would you?” And the massive structures that make it possible to produce the bounty create vast separations in place between the people commanding their operations and the people doing the work, as any study of the ratio of CEO pay to the average worker’s wages will reveal.

The other effect is that what counts as an existential threat gets a whole lot more abstracted. People who do not have immediate fear of starvation, plague, or warfare might well get more and more sensitive to anything that hints in those directions, trying to recalibrate the same level of anxiety about mortality to different conditions.

It’s easy, of course, when things can be treated as an easy analogy to the primal fears of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Consider the response to the AIDS crisis in the ’80s: here was plague and death, and it was concentrated in communities that were seen as undesirables (queer people and drug users). The response was twofold – to cast those suffering the plague as being condemned and damned (keeping in mind that that is a Christian theologisation of Hell, there, and not terribly compatible with the lupine one), and to encourage fear of contagion among other populations. To, in short, suggest that HIV was something that could steal the life essence from the community, and that – rather than working to close that Hellmouth with medical science and compassion – the appropriate action was quarantine, isolation, and panic, and being very clear that it must not be allowed to steal from us, and make sure that we never slipped into being like them, the ones from whom that theft was acceptable and correct. It was a Devil’s bargain, made by the Devil’s sorcerers, and they had the power to not only condemn so many to wasting, brutal, and isolated deaths, but to seed fear and steal more lives for Hell.

It was left to the people who would venture into Hell and care for those stolen lives – who were seen as tainted, risky, and treacherous afterwards – many of whom were already at least half-monstrous due to their own queerness – to steal back as much as they could.

Then there are times the analogies, the sense of existential threat, are framed a little bit differently, but we can still see the echoes of it. Consider the shape of the discussion as framed by certain parents of autistic children – how many of them speak of that language of Hell and theft. They say their child was taken from them, stolen away, they want to steal that person back – the person that they imagined existed, the phantom, the imaginary person – to put that person in place of the child they have. Meanwhile, actually autistic people have to fight to be heard, to get a place to speak, there are countless stories of having discussions of autism in the world dominated by people who are not autistic. (I’ve read several of them recently, but do I have the links saved? No, that would take forethought and realising they were going to be relevant to something the next week.) That narrative of theft and recovery, that sense of struggle against the Devil’s minions, whatever incomprehensible forces have stolen our children, it speaks to something primal, something compelling, those old werewolf stories… that is, if one forgets that those autistic people are still here and have their own perspective to offer.

And I have known autistic people who have taken comfort in changeling stories – in hearing of children who were “taken away”, replaced with someone strange, who knows unfamiliar words, who does not act like the other children do, quite. Who have said, “That is me. That is a story about me.”

But those stories also have changelings burned with hot pokers and abused and killed, in the hopes that the fairy folk would return the “real” lost child. And this is something that is still done to autistic children today.

Much like it is done to queer ones, to gender-variant ones, to all of these things that lead someone to conclude that someone has stolen a rightful child and taken them away to Hell. And because we cannot find the gates of Hell that hide that stolen property, we try other means to get it back.

Perhaps that’s how we can decide which side is the werewolf and which the sorcerer: which person thinks that other people are a property that can be stolen from them, or an item which can be dismissed.

When people say things are a lot more complicated than that, they means they’re getting worried that they won’t like the truth. People as things, that’s where it starts.” “Oh, I’m sure there are worse crimes–” “But they starts with thinking about people as things…”

When I look at some of the blocs that comprise what’s called the alt-right, I see a lot of people operating from a condition of existential threat. Sometimes that’s quite explicit – consider all the cries of “white genocide”, for example, from people who are afraid of being outnumbered, as if being outnumbered (and having a number of recessive genes) is an intrinsic pathway to annihilation. Sometimes it’s more veiled, though not all that veiled – the *Gator obsession with the idea that people wanting games they found interesting, or critiquing aspects of existing games, meant that they were going to destroy the brainless shoot-em-ups that they wanted. Or MRA obsession with women having sex with people other than them, or women they find unattractive having sex at all, or other such things. This threatens them at a core level, on an identity level, in a way that they cannot respond to with anything less than a Horsemen-are-riding scope of agitation.

And it’s broader still than that. Dominionist theologies are all about trying to enforce a particular flavor of Christianity on people who do not follow it, demanding compliance with a particular form of power. And when challenged, the cry is the same as it has always been: “You don’t want my children to waste away, do you?” A simple “I don’t subscribe to your religion” from someone who does not want to be bound by those principles is seen as a core attack, as a Devil’s play to destroy them. They have an invasiveness about them, a prurience, that holds that other people conducting their own lives must conform, because they truly believe that they have a right to the Devil’s granary of stolen lives and stolen power. Those people who want to steal back the right to go about their ordinary daily lives unmolested by the dictates of godbotherers are attacking what is rightly theirs, their holy right to call down damnation.

But “damnation” only means “we’ve decided to give your life to the Devil”. That’s all it means. All that so-called holiness and the accumulation of power is just the means to steal lives – black lives, queer lives, Native lives, disabled lives, women’s lives, so many other lives – and feed them into Hell, and profit off those storehouses. No amount of “It’s for your own good” and “this is your salvation” can repay a stolen life, no amount of saying “We are opposing Satan!” can make up for a single person thrown into Hell. You do not oppose the Devil by feeding souls into his engines.

As long as other people are an acceptable sacrifice, as long as there are people whose lives can be consigned to Hell, then there will be sorcerers. Who they think is expendable will vary – there will be not just the ones that we know as popular bigotries, but there will be those who want to condemn people of other political parties, or people who have been victims of particular crimes. There will be people who want to consign people who write the wrong kind of story or play the wrong kind of game to expendability, and make bank on their marginalisation. There will be people who find other people’s marginal status, their relegation to the brink of reality, to be very handy, since someone whose life depends on finding a job might well be someone who will do anything. Be any thing, and for a pittance besides.

People. Are. Not. Things.

Not pawns in a cosmic game, not win tokens, not items to bend to the will of power or destroy if they displease. They do not exist to be stacked like cordwood in the bellies of slave ships or the depths of warehouses or set to slave in governor’s mansions or shackled to jobs that cannot even pay them what it costs to live because others can afford to expropriate their life, steal their breath, and store them away in Hell.

But this is what Hell is, now: those Hellmouths of simpler times, when humanity’s worries were tangible, concrete, and we could imagine walking into Hell and carrying out seeds and thereby saving the world are not gone, but they are, in at least some ways, buried under other, more intricate ones.

The Horsemen are still riding. You can hear their hoofbeats, and they sound something like this:

It’s not that we want you to starve, but surely you don’t think you’re entitled to food? Starvation is bad. Just do the work. It doesn’t matter that the work doesn’t need you to do it, and you are replaceable, interchangeable, meaningless to the system: the system needs bodies and time, and your life is your problem. Send it to Hell for all we care.

It’s not that we want you to go to war, fight, be maimed, die, we support the troops. But you know those people Over There hate us and our freedoms, and we need to put the hurt on them so they know who’s right. They can go straight to Hell, am I right? What do you mean, joining the Army was your only hope of getting an education and a better life? Isn’t that a bit of a Devil’s bargain?

It’s not that we want you to get sick and suffer, but really, if you were responsible, this wouldn’t have happened. Are you sure you’re not too fat? Are you poor on purpose? Why didn’t you go to the dentist before this happened? Someone probably should’ve looked at that injury at the time but now it’s way too late to do anything about it, sorry. What is that, we couldn’t possibly give treatment to that, is it even a person?

It’s not that we want you to die, but people like you shouldn’t exist. They’re trouble, you know, the cop was probably afraid for his life. You know what they say about the wages of sin being death. She defied God’s will. It’s a mercy, you know, someone shouldn’t be forced to live like that. It’s the lügenpresse’s fault. Couldn’t she have been nicer when she turned him down? Someone should do something about people like you.

How many ways does this rhetoric send people to the granaries of Hell each day? Hell is no longer content to glean our seeds, it demands our selves as its tithe. Sixteen tons, and what do we get?

The Devil’s sorcerers may not outnumber the rest of us, but many of them are powerful and their bargains have bought them powers that the rest of us do not have: affluenza, say, or the position to be so far removed from damage one causes that nobody can imagine bringing it to trial (though hey, someone’s been charged with involuntary manslaughter regarding Flint’s water, that’s a news story recently, how novel that someone who had some responsibility for poisoning an entire town might actually get charged with something), the ability to literally get away with murder, at least so long as the victim is one of the ones already damned.

People are not things. People are not optional. A rhetoric that says, “Well, sure, you exist now, but in an ideal world that wouldn’t be the case” is a rhetoric of annihilation, and a tool of the Devil’s sorcerers.

But the Devil’s sorcerers, too, are human, and forgetting that is a path towards becoming one of them, and storing up and expending lives into Hell.

The Harrowing of Hell shall not be complete until, as Rev. Mark Morrison-Reed has said, the last sinner is dragged kicking and screaming into heaven. The Hounds of God must steal them all back.

As I’ve been writing this post, I’ve been following developments on two news stories.

The fire in a low-income apartment building – Grenfell Tower – is one of them. Here we have lives stolen by landlords who were unwilling to use a recent renovation to put in anything like building sprinklers (and who may have damaged some of the safety precautions intended to slow the spread of fire in a building), most obviously, but there are layers beyond that – that austerity measures reduced the funding for fire brigades notably, that an attempt to introduce legislation requiring such housing to be “fit for human habitation” was defeated by a Tory vote (and that many Tory politicians are landlords). And, further, that part of the reason so many were saved was the Muslim inhabitants, awake because of Ramadan, noticed the fire and started getting people out; the diversity of the population there was preservative.

The other is the shooting in Virginia, in which a man armed with a rifle shot at the House Majority Whip, aides, and others, injuring several. (And, because he is a white man, he was initially taken into custody alive.) And I cannot say that after all these years of “Second Amendment solutions” I am surprised by the terrorism there, even as I recognise that it is terrorism, is anti-democratic, is as hostile to the underlying nature of governance as the administration this man might well have thought he was fighting. It is actively difficult to deal with people who one believes are Hell’s partisans without losing an understanding of their humanity. People have wrestled with this one for ages. But one must be so very careful with unleashing Hell’s tools, those Horsemen – of bringing out Famine, Pestilence, War, and Death and setting them riding – because they leave the gates of Hell open, and they go where they will once unleashed.

It is by acting as a community that we save each other, and ourselves. Including from violence. Deliverance is in the hands of the shapeshifting other who we welcome home. Have each other’s backs. Know what it costs to venture into Hell, even if you cannot do it today, and know that building a home to come back to is why the werewolves can change their skins.

Premenstrual Education Is Key

Though under-studied, Menstrual Health Management (MHM) is a topic that has recently gained traction in research and media. As a water, sanitation and hygiene issue, it has a more pronounced effect on the equity, quality and gratification of education of women and girls universally.

Menstrual Education for a Conducive Learning Environment

Integrating menstrual hygiene education into national school curricula, policies and programs for adolescents is key to creating a conducive learning environment for pupils and students. These consists of access to menstrual hygiene essentials, toilets and changing rooms, clean water and waste management, and good hygiene methods that include hand-washing with soap. If these are excluded, schools and homes become unhealthy, excluding and inadequate spaces for maturation and development.

The Generational Consequences of Premenstrual Ignorance

The start of menstruation is a major event in a the life of a human being. While some girls find those first drops of blood liberating, others may feel confused and scared as they do not know what is going on with their bodies. Teachers skip an important part of health education because their educators skipped it for them. This becomes a futile generational cycle of ignorance that silently reeks in our society. A report by WaterAid stated that 2 out of 3 girls in Ethiopia do not receive education about menstruation at school. This is a common global phenomenon. Evidently, the reproductive health freedoms of women and girls are tightly knit to their education rights.

Holistic Reproductive Health Education

Menstrual education is a necessity because girls are provided information on menstrual hygiene, so that they can feel confident to make informed decisions about how their reproductive health. A scholastic paper, Creating opportunities for girls' participation in education in Uganda, researched by FAWE Uganda reports that 1 out of 2 Ugandan girls report missing one to three days of school per month due to menstruation.

Pre-menstrual education enables girls to stay in school by ensuring knowledge about hygienic menstrual products and disposal options. When girls learn about menstrual hygiene, they learn about a variety of reusable period collection methods. Menstrual cups and cloth pads sustainably equip women and girls to maintain their period on a budget, while minding the environment.

A Referendum for Education Curriculum

The education curriculum should be subjected to considerable amendments. The access to quality literature on reproductive health should be mandatory in primary and secondary schools. Quality literature has the capacity to inform, entertain and update pupils and students about the variant WASH facilities available in their context.

Available Quality Menstrual Education Literature

A good example of a quality menstrual book is the Menstrupedia Comic - A Friendly Guide to Periods. Written for the Indian context, Menstrupedia teaches young girls and their teachers about menstrual health. Initiated by Aditi Gupta, Menstrupedia is an effective period-positive comic book illustrated for pre-teen and teen girls. Published in 2015, this comic book is translated from English, Tahir and Spanish. Supplemented with animated video tutorials for teachers, parents and MHM educators, Menstrupedia is an 88-paged indisputable quality literature distributed widely and subsidised fairly for schools and groups. Other books that teach about menstruation include: The Period Book: A Girl’s Guide to Growing Up, Tunu’s Gift: An African Tale about Menstrual Health, and Girls Only!: All about Periods and Growing-up Stuff. Educated African women are better able to care for their own health and that of their families.They are in a better position to secure employment, be in charge of their reproductive health and command higher rewards for their work.

Ecological Effects on the Early Onset of Periods

On average, most folks start their periods when they are 12 or 13 years old. However, recent studies show that some girls are experiencing menarche at the tender age of 8 due to varying ecological changes. Waiting until girls gets their period to inform them about their reproductive make-up is an ignorant risk. Not only will the young girls learn that menstruation is a natural and healthy process, but it will also aid teachers and instructors deal with the embarrassment that they may have discussing about topic.

Storytelling for Reproductive Health Education

So, how do you discuss menstruation and offer education, as well as guidance and support, before the big day arrives? To avoid overwhelming pre-teens with a cluster of information, smaller conversations about how the human female body operates should be continuous process. Saturating the wide subject of reproductive health into a two-hour conversation can be too much for a young child to bear. Short talks, stories and even videos can encourage children reaching puberty to learn about the basic science of the human body without pressure.

Breaking Negative Social Norms

Throughout childhood, children ask many questions. This is an opportunity for parents and guardians to advance their children's knowledge. Doing so informs them that their elders are available for these discussions. This breaks negative social norms and provides accurate information and support about reproductive health.

Acknowledging Differences by Teaching Sensitivities

Explaining that everyone is different is also key. For instance, a young girl may be worried why she is not growing at the same pace as her friends. With the access of the internet, children may learn that people of all genders experience menstruation. Instead of casting these sensitive issues to the side and assuming that they will learn when they learn, story-telling with the aid of quality literature can give a child the confidence, knowledge and sensitivities to manoeuvre through life.

The Wholeness of Reproductive Health Freedom

Menstruation is the biological indicator that pregnancy has not occurred. When an individual gets their period, it means that the egg that was released from her ovary was not successfully fertilized and implanted in the uterus, and the uterine lining is being shed from the body. Talking about this with adolescents engages the important conversation of consent, and mitigated early pregnancy.

Puberty and the general inception of menstruation provides a window of opportunity to educate young adolescents about the changes occurring in their body. At the same time, they get to learn about their reproductive systems, fertility, contraception, and even the risk of sexually transmitted diseases and HIV/AIDS.

Menstrual hygiene education should be part of an expanded agenda for sexual and reproductive health services. Sometimes we do not have the words for this sensitive topic. However, having access to literature that is dedicated to telling accurate and relatable stories about menstrual and reproductive health fills that gap. The more we read, the more we learn.

My HIV Story: A Needle Stick, Pregnancy, and HIV

In the spring of 2017, I was working in a long-term care facility as a nurse. I worked the night shift at a small facility with one nurse and a nurse’s aide. One night, I was collecting a trough (syringe) on a new patient and experienced a needle stick. I didn’t panic. Although I protected myself daily as if anyone could have anything, I did long-term care and HIV is usually the last thing on your mind in a geriatric facility. I cleansed the area and bandaged it. Then I checked the patient’s information and septicemia was the worst finding. I called my director several times that night to report the incident but didn’t get an answer, so I continued my night. Two hours after my shift, my director returned the call. I was asked how I felt and told to monitor for any signs or symptoms of infection. That was it. Nothing more was thought about it.

About 3 months later, I recall being far more tired than usual. I was sleeping all day after work, falling asleep in my car after work, and in the garage when I made it home. I had picked up some extra shifts so I just attributed it to that. When my days off came up, I declined extra shifts and went out of town to visit my best friend. We went shopping and caught up on things after having spent a year apart. While we were at the mall, I felt faint and developed a migraine headache. We then stopped at a grocery store at her request. We stopped, she ran in and returned shortly. As we sat down at her home, she handed me a pregnancy test. I laughed and said, “What do I need that for?” She reminded me that she was my best friend and that she knew me better than I knew myself.

I was indeed pregnant. We sat in disbelief as I had just been to my gynecologist the previous month to schedule tubal ligation because my birth control had been wreaking havoc on my body. I already had two children, the youngest being nine years old. I called my boyfriend and he was so excited that he wanted to meet up immediately. We were both about an hour from my house so I drove wide-eyed and in complete silence. I scheduled the OB/GYN appointment the next day.

We waited in suspense for the first visit to see the baby. Everything went well on the first visit and shock was replaced with happiness after hearing that first heartbeat. A week and a half later, I received a phone call to move up my second appointment. Little did I know, that appointment would change my life forever.

On August 18th, 2017, the doctor sat down on his stool as I sat on the exam table. He put his hand on my knee and told me that I had HIV. I thought he was going to tell me that something was wrong with the baby and honestly, I was more relieved that it was me and not the baby. Nonetheless, I was shocked yet again. Then I was angry, scared, sad, and everything else at once. I said test me again, this can’t be right. I went home, sat on the bathroom floor, and texted my boyfriend. He didn’t say anything back that entire day.

The next day he came to my house to meet with the field technician from the CDC. I took my rapid test. Positive. My boyfriend took his test. Negative. The look in his eyes was one I will never forget. He looked at me as if all the trust he had in me for the last two years was gone. We talked and he decided to help me through the pregnancy. Except, everything had changed and he was very distant. I really felt alone for the most part.

Now, the clock started ticking. I had two OB/GYNs, an infectious disease doctor, and a nurse practitioner working with me to deliver this child safely. I was deathly afraid, to say the least. No doctor or hospital in my area was prepared to deliver a baby from an HIV-positive mother. The closest hospital was 150 miles away. I started ART’s immediately. My pregnancies had all previously been horrible due to hyperemesis gravidarum. This pregnancy was no different. Not only did I feel like I was dying during my entire pregnancy, but I was also truly afraid I was going to die.

One evening at 8 1/2 months pregnant, I began vomiting non-stop and doubling over in pain. I went to the hospital four times that evening and they kept sending me home with anti-emesis medication which I was already taking. We only have two hospitals, but only one was even remotely set up to possibly deliver my baby. That hospital was not helping me at all, so I panicked and went to the other hospital because I feared for the life of my child and my own. No progress on my condition was being made. My OB/GYN came over and released me from his care and told the hospital to send me to the closest facility that could deliver a positive mother.

It was the longest ride of my life. I rode in the ambulance strapped to the hospital gurney and, at one point, I remember hitting a pothole so hard that my body lifted completely into the air and slammed back down onto the gurney. When I reached the hospital, they immediately put me into a room and I changed into my gown. The phlebotomist came in and drew a blood sample for the laboratory. The result came back that I had pancreatitis. I had been at the hospital no longer than 15 minutes and, though I had never experienced it before, I was sure that my water broke as I was talking to the nurse.

The other OB/GYN that I had been working with was called and came over immediately. Within an hour, he had delivered my baby girl. I saw her briefly and the nurses whisked her away. Shortly afterward, I went to visit the baby in the NICU. I spoke with the pediatrician and by the grace of GOD her first tests were negative for HIV. I cried so hard that night.

Two weeks later, they sent me home empty-handed as the baby remained in the NICU. A month later, my baby came home and I continued her liquid AZTs for another six weeks. At her eighth week visit, I made that 150-mile drive and the next week her report was again negative for HIV antibodies. We will return again in three days from the date of this essay when she is four months old and again when she is eighteen months old.

At seven weeks, her father left. He could not handle the stigma that follows the disease. This is all new to me and now I am alone raising a child while I’m dealing with a mountain.

It seems that you never hear so many TV commercials and conversations about HIV until you have it yourself. You see posts on Facebook and rude condemning comments about HIV. It seems it’s repeatedly a topic. The conversations stand out to you like never before and you wonder to yourself if you have ever been so careless and crass in your own thinking about the disease.

HIV has truly changed my life. I feel as if I need to do everything possible now to secure my children’s future because my own future now seems unsure. I want to live my best life while I am here. I cherish every single moment with my children like it’s the first time I’ve laid eyes on them. Their jokes are funnier, I hug them tighter, and I miss them more when they are away even for a minute. I now spend more time with my parents than I ever have and I do everything with a purpose.

I wish people without HIV knew how sensitive people with it feel. It’s not just any disease. A lot of people don’t feel bad for you at all because of the way that it is mostly contracted. They either view you as a drug user, homosexual if you are a male, or sexually promiscuous. That isn’t always the case at all. I wish they knew that the disease has no face and has no preference. People with HIV deserve no less love than anyone else. I wish they knew how scary it is not to be able to afford your medication and wonder how long you have to live. I wish people knew how you could be having fun, laughing, and all of a sudden the words “I have HIV” randomly cross your mind and remind you of your disease. I wish people without the disease knew how much support those living with it really need. Most of all, I wish they would educate themselves about HIV.

Discuss why and how a number of different photographers have decided to use controversial subject matter as the basis of their photographs.

The overall focus of this essay is to show how a number of photographers used controversial subject matter when presenting their collection of photographs to their audience and how it affects their views on that subject matter. It could be argued that some artists might want to shock viewers into looking at their work and that might mean that they gain a broader audience. Advertising standards agencies are most commonly known for having a major impact of how news and is presented they are most commonly used to file complaints made if work may be offensive to others and prevent it from being used or offer other alternatives towards the outcome of the way they present certain topics. Its role is to "regulate the content of advertisements, sales promotions and direct marketing in the UK" by investigating "complaints made about ads, sales promotions or direct marketing", and deciding whether such advertising complies with its advertising standards codes. This is most likely represented by the Benetton adverts in which hold many controversial subjects these would have most likely been looked into by this particular company. Other advertising agencies such as Melanie Pullen was born in New York City in 1975, she never went to school to study photography, her photography skills are self-taught. Melanie Pullen was first interested in photography after being ‘haunted’ by war imagery "As I grew desensitized to domestic crime and violence, I became more sensitized to images of war. It was a strange phenomenon that I've explored and philosophized. I don’t like violence; I have never been a dark person. I see stories and different layers to violent imagery. I'm curious about the response people have to violent images.” (1) Pullen’s work was distributed from real life cases presented from NYPD that had been closed for years and the outcome of them, however Pullen used these cases to represent her work to an audience, as well as this she used this to gain attention from a wider audience that may be interested. Melanie Pullen is probably most well-known for her series titled: ‘High Fashion Crime Scenes’ which are based on the subject matter of murder and suicide. She gains inspiration from looking at books about old crime scenes from the 1950’s and also from looking at vintage crime scene images she has found in the files of the Los Angeles Police Department. ‘She scours the vintage crime-scene images of the Los Angeles Police Department and the coroner’s office for reference material to create interpretive reenactments’ (2). Pullen is a serious artist who uses the ‘High Fashion Crime Scene’ series to make a statement about serious issues such as crime and suicide. However, she also wanted to see whether she could use the power and attraction of fashion to ‘’disguise and distract, or draw attention away from the otherwise gruesome subjects’’ (3). The images in this series show a range of recreated crime scenes that are different, whether it is the clothes the model ‘victims’ are wearing or the way they are placed in the frame (although that could be linked to how the victims were photographed in their original found locations). What is interesting to think about is whether Pullen has stepped beyond the line of what most people would consider to be a morally acceptable subject matter, especially because it could be quite upsetting for some of the audience because of personal reasons. However, on the other hand, there has now been an increase in explicitly violent films “fifteen years ago, The Walking Dead would have never been on T.V.”(4) Therefore, more people are exposed to hearing and seeing television programmes and films about people being murdered or committing suicide, and also it features on the news all the time this would be because during recent years this type of behavior has become the unrelenting reality. The images Pullen creates in ‘High Fashion Crime Scenes’ all have meaning to them, each of them represents a crime scene which has been inspired, either directly or indirectly by using the police files from NYPD and LAPD to gain inspiration. She uses these particular file photographs to carefully place her models and other excess items within the frame.  As well as this, she also presents her work as if in the decade that the file had been created in.

                                                                        Pullen had over 80 crew members to help her photograph many of these images. She primarily works in film and shoots with a range of cameras including: Hasselblad 503cw; Hasselblad H2; Linhof Technika; Canon EOS 3. Pullen prints and retouches all of her own work with very little help, if any. She does her own high resolution scanning and she still employs traditional spotting techniques due to the size of her prints - she personally hand spots each print. It could be argued that overall this photographic series has a set of two potential audiences, they are: those people who are interested in the fashion aspect within the images, and those interested in the crime aspects. In this image on the right you can see that the model in the photograph is shown to be a victim of suicide; however, another strong focal point of the image are the clothes worn by her. They might be more interested in what she is wearing would be the main focus point within the image. As well as this a viewer would see how the model has been presented and the issue it raises and this would be taken into consideration to others viewing the image and the subject behind the matter. Izima Kaoru was born in 1954 in Kyoto, Japan. He became interested in photography and specifically fashion photography during the time frame of 1993 - 2008 when his most well-known collection of images was created. In 1993, he began a series of fashion-based photographs titled ‘Landscape with Corpse’. He started this series by asking female Japanese models and celebrities who were known mainly in Japan what they would like to wear and how they would like to die in their ideal ‘fantasy’ death. He would then try to create these fantasies based on all the information that they gave him. The reason that Kaoru decided to do this series of photographs is that he “always thought that fashion magazines should work to liven up everyday life, or to evoke new ways of thinking towards life” (5).

The photographs that Kaoru has taken in this series shows differences in the subject matter of environment and fashion. From the exact location and setting of their fictional death through to the couture outfits the model wanted to be wearing during their final moments on Earth. It would be fair to say that some viewers might find these photographs, which are basically a morbid take on high-fashion, unacceptable because all the victims are women. Kaoru has since shown his work internationally, and his photographs have been featured in many publications, including The New Yorker, The New York Times, Interview Magazine, Esquire, Aperture, and The Huffington Post.

The image above shows one of the many people that Kaoru photographed who is positioned in the way that she wishes to die in the clothes that she wishes to wear. The viewer has many focal points in the photograph to look at which are aesthetically pleasing on the surface. In regards to the image above, the viewer would have to look quite hard to see that the model looks to be injured or dead. However, the image below shows the subject having a gruesome wound on the neck and although the model in probably wearing clothes she wanted to wear at her death. We have to question whether she would want to die in this violent way. Overall his work was created to present how people would like to wear when they die but in truth this would less likely happen and if it was to be a real life situation this would be the models least concern, the way that his models are positioned also represent that they may have had a choice in how they died but other than that the only decision they had made was what to wear. An advertising campaign that uses controversial subject matter to advertise a fashion brand is the old Benetton campaign. The majority of these adverts was broadcasted in the year from 1993 through to the latest one in 2011 in which Benetton was later sued over shock adverts due to the subjects in which was exposed abruptly to the public without any concern of how people would feel about it. The majority of the images produced for this particular campaign include different controversial subjects such as HIV, color diversity and mistreatment. These Benetton adverts were used to publicise, what was at the time, very controversial issues to the viewer and then they might be interested in finding out more information about this issue. An image from one of these Benetton adverts include a photograph of David Kirby, a HIV Positive patient, as he lay dying in hospital. However, ‘Kirby's parents said: 'We don’t feel we’ve been used by Benetton, but rather the reverse: David is speaking much louder now that he’s dead, than he did when he was alive’’ (7) Benetton’s advertisements have also featured images of  both men and women with tattoos that say “HIV Positive” on parts of their bodies. (see image below). It could be argued that this has had an impact on how people

responded to HIV because more people became aware of issues surrounding HIV and AIDS. Oliviero Toscani, the photographer for Benetton who created some of these advertisements, said, in response to criticism of the David Kirby advert, "to use the forum of poster advertising to make people aware of this [AIDS] tragedy at a time when no-one dared to show AIDS patients.” (8)

However, another image that was taken by the Benetton campaign which in various ways caused controversy was the image on the right. This photograph features two girls, the girl on the left has the hair and cheeks of a cherub, of an angel. The other girl has her hair spiked up like devil horns and resists a smile. Although it was attempting to show the idea of ‘uniting’ it ended up looking like it was separating white and black into good and evil. The image represents racial inequality because Benetton perceive these children within the image as the good and the bad this was controversial because Benetton presents discrimination, the photographer Oliviero Toscani was also known for this particular image he was well known to have an effect on the Benetton campaign. This was used to draw the attention to important matters behind the images and is to represent how people are treated and how they are effected in life, it also represents how the media can present controversial subjects but does nothing to help as well as this the picture shows a united front but an underlining of racism in which was never addressed in such a way. Several of Benetton’s adverts have received much praise for heightening awareness of significant social issues and for ‘taking a stand’ against infringements on human rights, civil liberties, and environmental issues.

Is it ok for artists and photographers to use controversial themes and subject matter in their photographs if they do it for the right reasons?

Overall I believe that controversial subject matter may be considered as being controversial at different levels by different people. The subjects within many of the photographs taken by the artists in this essay include death, suicide and illness. Artists such as Pullen and Kaoru based their photographs around subjects like these, however, they have combined these with more commercial aspects such as fashion. The models within the images that have been taken all have a back ground and a ‘case file’ behind them, in which is to show a more modern way of their deaths that happened decades previously, I believe that the more controversial that the subject is, would make the work more memorable which earns that the subject helps in matters that it concerns. Pullen’s work shows different controversial subject underlining her work, which include murder, suicide and more but this is don’t throughout her work to gain viewers’ attention. However in my opinion the work of these particular photographers all have different views on these subjects in which can be more sensitive to particular people, her work shows the files in which are based upon life events that have occurred in previous years making it a subject in which may be in my belief frowned upon because family members of the victims would not agree with taking pictures based upon them.

Many of the photographer in which photograph controversial subjects take themselves out of other perspectives which means that the images are taken in spite of how others would feel about the subject. Artists such as Pullen based her photography around old case’s which was taken from the mid-19th century however due to the cases many people would feel differently towards this. Because in my opinion the relative of those involved would have no control over whether she had access to the files due to them being closed cases. However the use of fashion is presenting this topic in such a way as to make the topic less important, I believe this would result although showing her true intention of presenting fashion through these subjects. Certain photographers would see this as an opportunity to get their name known and have a spoken about image in which that had been broadcasted around the world because of the subjects included.  

People who are relative to these particular victims may not want the way their relatives had been tragically killed used for commercial properties. Just like Pullen, Kaoru also presents his work in ways that would be not necessary to the audience due to the way he presents his models also viewed as the ‘victims’. I believe that his work was for a way to gain more of an audience from the nation, the use of topic such as deaths to gain others attention. However the way Kaoru asks his model what they wish to wear when they die is in my opinion pointless but does gain attention in how they all wish to be dressed in various designer clothes even though if this was to happen to them the least of their concerns would be what they had wished to wear. As well as the relatives being a concerns for these particular photographers the majority of the victims shown within the set of images are women, this shows inequality due to the fact that probably not all victims of these particular crime are women. But by the way Pullen and Karou presents their work suggest otherwise. I believe they used the controversial topic to gain attention from a wider audience as well as to sell and create a wider branch for more money in their own point of view. Other agencies that use controversial subjects to further their work would be the coca cola advert in which was created his year that addressed the police brutality issues however this ad gained a lot of backlash from viewer due to the way this was conceived to the audience, these types of adverts are risky due to the sensitive subject that people take into account. In my opinion the way that these photographs and adverts are presented all are to gain attention from social media and media itself.  

Even though photographers have taken set of images of these particular subjects, there are also those who take them to present the truth behind the outcomes from tragedy and to be able to determine what has happened in the last moments of one’s life.  However these photographers are most likely to be a reported in which had taken the image of the incidents that happened in Vietnam. Nick Ut was the one to have captured that moment, this shows how the war effected many of those in which had no fight. The photojournalist took this picture not to be world known, but to show the effect that war has on others as well as their own country  this image was taken to be presented to others that had no clue what was happening abroad and to represent what they had been supporting back ‘home’. I believe that if a straight forward photograph was to present a meaning or a factor that needed to be presented that had controversial subjects within the image it would be useful to perceive a message to the audience, whereas within Pullen and Karou’s work was purely to show their work in ways to gain attention to gain recognition in the way that they have photographed a topic within another topic.

Artists used in this essay helped understand the work intended for the course work would need to be structured and understated to present the controversial subjects in a less insulting way to those who had been effected by the particular subject. This essay has helped understand that the majority of the photographers who had taken sets of images related to subjects such as death, murder etc. have done so  to make a name for themselves. Furthermore the way that these images had been portrayed to the audience was for commercial purposes and nothing more. This may cause a rift in how people perceive attitudes towards photographer responsible for these images, because they only have their own interest at heart however other publish images like these to show the public the brutality of the world where as others change details to make it more friendly and beneficial for themselves.
