your gifs are so nice! would you be willing to share your sharpening? and if it's not too much trouble do a quick rundown of your coloring process?

hi anon! it's no trouble at all, if it helps i'm happy to share <3

first i'd like to say that the size and speed of your gifs is key for the sharpen to look good! an incorrectly sized gif will look wonky on desktop (mobile is not very noticeable but desktop is where your gifs can potentially look bad if you size incorrectly) and same for slow-ish gifs, the slower your gif is the more the imperfections show so a correct speed hides the ugly parts lol

now with that out of the way i'm going to put everything under the cut bc it's probs going to be very long lol if you have any questions after reading all of this, do not hesitate to come back and i'll try to explain better!

okay! first i’d like to point out that i use an older photoshop, simply bc i like how they work lol i work on photoshop cs6 so to enable the same options i’m going to show you here you’ll have to have enabled the legacy option in the smart sharpen filters. 

my sharpen varies depending on my source material tbh here are some examples:

source material: music videos

i actually use mvs downloaded from vimeo but these take longer to be up bc the directors don't usually upload at the same time the video is coming out unlike youtube mv, so if i'm working with something from youtube i like to get the biggest format available, so 4k and if it's not available then 1080p will do

i like to do big gifs for mvs so thats 540px width, these are my crop settings (putting it like that i don’t have to manually resize to 540px after cropping bc it’s going to be already the correct size)

and then i lower the opacity of it to 75/80%, double clicking here

source material: stage videos in .ts format 

for stages i like to work with .ts files since they are very high quality recordings of the stages and generally the gifs come out nicer. for stages that are from youtube the next part of this will probs help but this part will be focused on .ts files. 

i get my files from kpop24hrs which is invite only right now and invites are a bitch to get a hold of but if you have access it’ll make your life so easy when giffing stages, there’s also twitter to look up files! for stray kids the fastest .ts uploader on twitter is @/STEii_e but if you look up the date + stray kids + .ts the tweets will show! anyway, back to the important thing

for .ts files i work with AviSynth! my computer hates vapoursynth so i use it’s older sibling lol it does the work just fine for what i use it imo bc i usually end up sharpening on photoshop. if you’d like an avisynth tutorial, this is what i used to learn about it and if you’d like to try vapoursynth there’s tons of tutorials from tumblr if you google, the most complete one is from user realstraykids

i modified my avisynth processor for it to have a denoiser (which is a feature from vapoursynth) to have my gifs look a little more smooth but that effect can also be achieved using topaz tbh

like i said i modified some things to have a denoiser so it won’t look like this on a regular avisynth

using debilinear usually makes my gif already look a bit sharp, so if i see it’s good i don’t use a sharpen, if i see it need a little push i’ll use a smart sharpen of 500% radius and 0.3px amount, and i’ll use a gaussian blur filter set to 0,3 and i lower it’s opacity to 75/80%

anyone that ever worked with a lq-ish video know how they just look ugly no matter how your try to sharpen, specially vlives and now channie’s rooms on youtube (*shaking fist in the air* damn you 720p videos!!) so i found a way to make them look decent, in this case i oversharpen using a 500% 0.4px smart shapen and then i slap a gaussian blur of 0,3 (lowered to 50% opacity) on top of it to smooth things out, more often than not it works very well but some videos are just plain bad (looking at you twitter) so this will work if you tweak the gaussian blur to your liking. i also recommend to work with small gifs if your video is not 1080p bc they’ll look better, but if you like pain like me and love big gifs this is what i do:

that’s about it for my sharpen tricks! 

for coloring i like to do vibrant gifs, i adapted my latest method from this and this, and another tutorial that i can’t find rn, but  for my base what i do is two curves layers, a levels layer to bring up darks, then i do a hue/sat to fix up colors, then i do vibrance and finally i selective color to fix things up. i’m going to show you on this binnie and minho gifs

first we use a curves layer and we set it on automatic (no worries if it gets too bright, we’ll be fixing as we go)

now we do a second curves layer, for this one we’ll use the black color picker from the curves layer and pick the darkest point on our gif

now we fix the darks and we bring some brightness with a levels layer

now we do a hue/saturation layer, here i fix up the reds and yellows, sometimes i skip it if the gif already looks good after the first 3 layers if that’s the case i go directly to the next step which is vibrance, in this case i only did minho in this step bc i felt like binnie’s was okay after the first 3 layers

now it’s the vibrance layer, for making the colors pop out more

and now the final layer: selective color! here we fix again red and yellows

that was my base coloring! sometimes i put in a gradient map in between the curves layers and the levels but only sometimes. after this if i want to mess around with colors i mostly go with another hue/sat layer or just use selective color, hue/sat is great for color manipulation. anyway, this is the finished result and my saving settings!

life update!!

i finally have some free time and havent properly posted something in so long so i thought id write up something!

first of all i want to say that ive successfully fixed my bingewatch problem in late january!! i hate to say it, but seeing how many movies i saw last year in my letterboxd wrapped really concerned me 🫤 i wanted to make an effort to make use of my time properly (after starting a new job and all) and i thought i wont let myself waste time bingeing horrible b-movies just so i can bump up the percent watched in someones filmography (its kinda tricky doing it so i made a resolution to only watch movies which interests me if i want to see more of someone)

with that said, i ended up not watching anything on weekdays and eventually think that staring at my phone for more than an hour wasnt my thing anymore (at least in the context of doing it EVERYDAY). so that may be one of the reasons why the turnaround for my hyperfixations got slower (which i think is good!).

ALSO, i do want to mention that because ive been watching less films recently i initially thought it would be great for my gif making hobby since i wont feel the pressure of wanting to gif so many movies at one sitting. i tried this in early feb and.. well... lets just say that it takes time for my very old laptop to make gifs (i had it since college during the pandemic so it was really used!). i only screen record scenes i want to gif because i hate having to wait to download AND even if i had hq clips it would take my laptop so long to render. so making something lq and having to wait 30mins just for a single gif wasnt doing it for me (bcs i said i wanted to make more use of my time).. so thats the reason why i havent posted anything lately (I REALLY REALLY wanted to make a gifset of josh whitehouse in valley girl but the quality just ended up stressing me 🫠)

and for my last update, as u can tell from my reblogs on queue, i just saw daisy jones and the six and LOVE josh whitehouse and he really got me playing the guitar again 😭😭 (i still think its a miracle!!!). ive been practicing some old pieces i used to perform when i was in high school during my 5-9's and i just had a bizzare idea of getting into the piano. i only ever played classical before, so i always had a problem doing improvs. i spent some time looking at videos on youtube and found out improvs on the piano were waay easier to play and understand, so im gonna buy a keyboard very very soon (which im so excited for)!!!! learning how to do jazz improvs on keys would probably be my new hobby and making gifs would probably be back until i get a new laptop (which at the moment is very low priority 🥲)

JOSH WHITEHOUSE -i find it crazy how most of my hyperfixations are englishmen. but yes. my sweet pookie. i love him. i will try not to talk much bcs if i start i wont stop. but tldr i didnt binge his filmography so i was on his youtube channel for quite some time and spent 15mins a day there... thats maybe the reason i got into playing the guitar again? love his music videos AND love how he plays flamenco. i play classical on the guitar and am a tarrèga girl so i never bothered to learn flamenco (tarrèga hated it) . but knowing just that made me want to at least remember some pieces i used to play just so i can play again... THEN i found out he has a new movie coming up with...

malcolm mcrae: ngl his pretty face caught my eye (special shoutout to anya! literally the power couple)... my first thoughts were like 'ohh i wonder what his character is like in triton'. but then i found out hes in a band SO i was thinking ok hes in a movie w josh so theres probably gonna be something music in it. i then looked up his band and love their songs!! theyre only a duo which i think is p strong (u dont need that many ppl in a band rly!) and i watched some interviews they had too!

KANE RITCHOTTE: my babygirl. my darling. idk what to say abt him. his songs with malcolm are always so magical. ive been playing gods in the details on repeat since early feb. hes my favorite more* member. the literal musical god. im praying hell sing more songs. ALSO i was suprised he did a cameo in daisy jones and the six with malcolm (they were the one who taught some of them how to play their instruments!! i was in awe bcs malcolm was the literal billy dune. LIKE sam claflin really copied his playing style which is so neat!!)

Utena Special Chapter #2 - Beautiful Thorns (LQ raws & summary)

The new Utena chapter in this month’s Flowers is too beautiful not to share. It contains a bit of an alternative take on the historical events of the anime; Ruka takes on the role of several amalgamated characters to very nice effect. There’s a little something for everyone, I think--Ruka fans, Juri/Shiori fans, and even Utena/Anshi fans. 

I don’t have time to do a full translation, but I’ve written up a long-ish summary to tide everyone over ‘til some kind soul has time to translate the chapter. I’ve also uploaded some lazy LQ raw scans, which will be available for a few weeks. You can download them here or view them here. The summary is below the break.

La Belle Épine (Beautiful Thorns) - Utena Special Chapter 2

The chapter begins with a surreal dream Juri has of drowning. In the dream, she wishes to be saved. An unknown hand reaches down to catch her wrist, only to tell her she won’t be forgiven.

Juri awakens with a start. She reveals the dream has been recurring over an unknown period of time. She touches the scar on her chest and mentions she has a bad feeling.

At the Tokyo Fencing World Cup, Juri’s facing a challenger in the ring. Miki watches from afar. Her opponent is strong, and is on the defensive when lightning strikes the arena and the lights go out. The match is put on hold due to the disruption, and it’s decided the two opponents will have a rematch at a later date.

Juri’s opponent is revealed to be male—the audience will recognize him as Ruka. Juri is astonished to see a man in the women’s games, but she doesn’t know him. He flashes a rose crest and tells her she narrowly escaped her loss, but next time she won’t be so lucky. As he walks away, Miki mentions that he’s never heard of Juri’s opponent before. Juri asks Miki about the man she just faced, and Miki laughs and says her opponent was a woman. Something supernatural is going on.

At Ootori Academy, Juri is taking part in a photo shoot. Her manager, Shiori, looks on from the crowd. As she works, Juri becomes lost in thought, musing over her male opponent and wondering why a man was facing her in the tournament, and also why his face seems so familiar.

It starts to rain, and the shoot is cancelled for the day. Shiori remarks that it’s been a long time since they last took photos at Ootori, and that Juri’s career began here. She reminisces that there are so many memories wrapped up in the academy. Juri’s not really listening, and she blurts out that she lost the match against her male opponent. Juri says she’s been successful in her matches over the past few years, but her time is running out. She insists that she’s going to retire. Shiori can’t believe it, but Juri reiterates that she wants to save herself from an inevitable fall from glory.

This upsets Shiori. She reveals Juri hasn’t been returning her calls lately, and declares that she’ll be honest now too. Juri isn’t sure what she means but immediately gets distracted by the sudden appearance of Ruka behind Juri. Juri demands to know why he’s there and if Shiori is the one who asked him to come. Shiori doesn’t know what Juri’s talking about (making it likely she can’t see what Juri can),and she reveals she’s been talking to another fencer about becoming their manager.

Ruka chimes in that he’d been looking for a manager, and Juri’s decision saves him the trouble. Juri becomes agitated and pulls Shiori away from Ruka, demanding to know why Ruka’s getting in between her and Shiori. She wants to know what his real objective is. Ruka smirks, but doesn’t get a chance to say anything before Shiori yanks her wrist from Juri’s grip. She declares she’s fed up with putting up with Juri’s attitude and bids Juri farewell. Ruka leaves with her, placing his hand on the small of Shiori’s back with a knowing smirk at Juri. Juri silently begs Shiori not to leave her.

She reveals that she needs Shiori, because she’s always loved her. She then takes a trip down memory lane to their junior high days, in a new variant of their time together growing up. Shiori was a wealthy shining girl, and in comparison Juri felt diminished and unworthy. One day, Juri overhears Shiori declaring that she loves fencing because fencers are like shining princes. Juri feels that princess naturally love princes. If that’s what Shiori wants, then Juri has to become a prince for her sake. With this inspiration, she takes up fencing and thanks to dedicated practice by the riverbank, she begins to win.

Sometime later, Shiori acknowledges her efforts by saying Juri is as strong as a prince. But on the very day of Juri’s victory, Shiori introduces Tsuchiya Ruka as her fiancé. Ruka mentions they’ve been engaged for seven years and compliments Juri on her match. Shiori comments that Ruka is a fencer as well. Juri’s hopes are crushed, because here stands Shire’s true prince, and she’d never had a chance to begin with.

Later on, by the riverbank, she loses her locket with Shiori’s picture. The one who finds it, of course, is Ruka. Juri asks for the locket back, but Ruka playfully tells her she’ll have to chase him down to get it—he’ll acknowledge her sword arm, but he won’t lose to her in sports. He races off with her locket in tow, and shortly afterward she’s too winded to follow him. She mutters to herself that she hates him and that she hopes he’ll disappear from Shiori’s life. She thinks things would be better if he was dead.

Back in the present, it’s the day of the rematch. Miki wishes Juri good luck, and Shiori watches on, worried. Juri declares she won’t lose to that man, which confuses Miki again. Ruka and Juri face off in the arena. Their fight increases in intensity; they’re equally matched. A crack of lightning kills the lights again. Juri wonders if it’s a coincidence, but Ruka says there are no coincidences, only inevitability. He says he called “it” here. As Juri is wondering what “it” is, a familiar castle and dueling arena appear in the sky.

Juri wonders if it’s a dream, but has no time to ponder further as Ruka is ready to continue the match. Juri is shocked to find they’re holding real swords now. Ruka says Shiori had said she wanted to see the final outcome of the match, and Shiori appears in the Rose Bride gown. Shiori holds out a rose to Juri and declares that she likes strong people who resemble princes. She places her rose on Juri’s lapel and explains the rules of the rose duel.

Juri attacks Ruka. The fight furiously until he nearly swipes her rose, but she dodges to protect it. Juri thinks that she can’t let him take Shiori, that she hates him, and that she wishes he’d disappear. As she thinks this, Ruka gets the upper hand and pins her to the ground. Desperate to not lose, Juri wishes for the power of a prince, even if only for a moment.

Her heartfelt wish summons familiar flower petals from the castle, but it is not Dios who descends—it is a dreamlike Utena. Juri doesn’t recognize her, and she asks who she is. Utena responds with only a simple, “The power to revolutionize the world.” Juri notes Utena’s rose crest ring. She asks what it is. Utena says it’s the prince’s ring.

Utena directs Juri’s gaze over her shoulder. When Juri looks, Ruka and Shiori fade into the background and a mansion on the waves is revealed. Suddenly Juri is back in her junior high days, in a memory. Juri mourns that she’s never been able to reach the place, and that she’ll never be able to. In the distance, she catches sight of Shiori peering into the turbulent water. Shortly afterward, Shiori falls into the water. Juri jumps into the water to save Shiori. As she swims, she declares to herself that she’ll become a prince and save Shiori. Her wish is granted, and she manages to get Shiori back to safety, but the tide snatches her away before she can climb up herself.

As she sinks into the waters, she thinks it’s all over. Then a hand grasps her wrist, and a voice tells her that it will never forgive her, that she can’t give up here, that her life has only just begun and she must not die. On her savior’s hand is the prince’s ring. When Juri awakens in the hospital, she realizes she was saved, but doesn’t know by whom. In the bed next to her, she hears Shiori weeping, asking Ruka why he had to die to rescue Juri. She asks if there was something Ruka had wanted to say to Juri. But Ruka is no longer there to be asked; he died saving Juri.

Stricken with guilt, Juri staggers down the hallway of the hospital, letting the reality of what Ruka did for her sink in—and what his sacrifice has cost her in regard to the girl she loves. She wanders through the halls wondering why, and they transform into the church where a certain girl once crawled into a coffin with her parents. A voice responds to Juri’s mental questions, saying, “Because he was a prince.”

Juri comes face to face with a child version of Utena, and she asks if she’s the same girl who descended from the castle. Predictably Utena ignores her and instead says that she met Ruka, and he told her that he had fallen in love with Juri when he saw her practicing hard on the riverbank when no one was watching. He’d wanted to save Juri. Utena says that’s why she gave Ruka her ring. Juri thinks back suddenly to the time Ruka stole her locket and blushes with realization. Utena continues, and as she speaks, she is “possessed” by Ruka (implying that the other manifestations of Ruka were also possessions of regular people), who declares that Juri is beautiful and the goddess of battle. Juri is touched, and she thanks him because she’s never been praised like this before.

Ruka touches her hand and leans his head on her shoulder for the briefest moment before he moves away. As he turns, he leaves Utena’s body, leaving her behind. Juri asks where he (and Utena) are going. Utena says that she is going to meet a certain girl. Juri cries in response, and suddenly she’s back in the middle of the match. She defeats her opponent, and she waits with anticipation as her opponent removes their mask. But instead of Ruka, it’s a young woman—the very young woman who has been her opponent all along, and the reason Miki was always confused when Juri called her a man.

Juri clutches her chest and finds the locket has at last been returned to her. Inside the pendent, on the opposite side of Shiori’s picture, the words “Fight Juri” have been scratched into the surface.

After the match, Shiori congratulates her and they embrace. Shiori says Juri was shining during the match, and that she was as like a prince as ever. Juri tells Shiori that her words have always given her courage, and she’s grateful. Shiori asks if Juri’s really going to leave the fencing world, but Juri ignores her and says that she will no longer fight for Shiori’s sake. Juri says that she had kept on fighting in order to protect Shiori as a prince would, and also for Ruka who’d died saving her, but from now on she’ll fight because she likes the fight. That alone is enough for her.

Shiori mentions that she had a dream about Ruka that morning. In her dream, he thanked her for finding him and watching over him. With that, he smiled and vanished. Juri looks at the inner lid of her pendant and smiles as she and Ruka symbolically part ways forever.

okay, yikes. this one is difficult because i’ve been making gifs for over 5 years now??? so i legit do not remember a lot of them i’ve made until i see people reblogging them again, lmao. but off the top of my head, these:

1 - https://roseaque.tumblr.com/post/167508938090/billy-his-tongue - i don’t know how the fuck i nailed the coloring on this one, but every time i see it, i’m literally so confused how i managed to get it so perfectly colored. like, all those scenes have different lighting and everything, and yet it’s just so crisp and bright and pretty. i will never be able to color something so cohesive as this again.

13: Where or from whom did you learn how to gif

i literally don’t remember??? i know i started because of tumblr, and it was a lot of trial and error. i spent a lot of time looking at tutorials and once i figured out how to do it, it came down to coloring and figuring out what worked best for what i liked and what i wanted - in the end i learned that it’s kinda best to develop your own style in terms of how you like to edit. most coloring tutorials aren’t bad, but they weren’t exactly what i wanted, so i took bits and pieces from different tutorials and made my own thing. pretty sure i took a base .PSD from someone and formatted it to my own liking, so at the end of the day, it’s not 100% me in terms of the layers that i use, but how i color is mine. i have a .PSD with layers that i always use, every time. i have a system i stick to literally every time, and it doesn’t matter if a scene is too dark or light or warm or cool, it works so well. so i can’t tell you usernames as it’s been ages since i’ve found them, but yeah, tumblr is where. thank god for people who are kind enough to make tutorials.

14: How long does it usually take you to make a set

i can only answer vaguely - hours. and the reason is dependent upon what you’re trying to do - if it’s gif’ing one specific scene, it usually doesn’t take as long because you can color one gif and apply that coloring to the rest of them without fear of them mismatching. if text is involved, it takes a little longer due to transcribing and then making sure all the next is aligned.

so while that can take awhile, it’s shorter in comparison to say gif’ing multiple scenes that have different lighting because you can’t just color one scene and slap it on another gif. you have to individually color them and coloring is what takes the longest for me ie. trying to determine what fits best. sometimes i’ve gotten to an ‘end’ result with coloring and i hate it so much, i scrap it and start over. then, you have to add on how many gifs you’re gonna make in a set. if you’re doing 6 vs 8 vs 10, then that’s even more time. i will say, at the bare minimum, it takes over 2hrs for a gifset. that’s not including having downloaded the material and cutting the clip so it can be imported into photoshop.

it can also depend on your eyeballs, too. i know that sounds weird, but there are days where i’m just like....... you’re coloring is so off today wtf u doin. and then other days, i’m knocking out coloring and it doesn’t take me that long even if it’s multiple gifs.
