I finally got all the pieces of Virginia's "Meet Outfit" and did a little photoshoot! (The indoor photos were taken at the historic Hotel Ruby Marie here in Madison WI, where they very kindly allow cosplayers and other photographers to use their beautiful vintage decor as a backdrop!)
Oh, and because I'm super proud of her jewelry, some closeups and info on each:
Tumblr media
This is the pendant on her necklace; it was inspired by Victorian-era mourning jewelry, which often contained hair or other parts of the deceased loved one. If you look closely, you may notice her father's photo is actually Jim Beaver as Carter Cushing in Crimson Peak (Edith Cushing was one of my main inspirations for Virginia). I edited the photo for that "vintage" feel. The hair, which is meant to be from her father's beard, was actually taken from Captain's tail! 😅
Tumblr media
I made her ring using a blank DIY ring from Etsy and a skull charm intended for nail art
Tumblr media
Her bracelet is made from real Jet beads (I made it by taking apart a human-sized bracelet and restringing part of it). Jet was a very popular stone for mourning jewelry in the Victorian era.

Meet Violet Fielding, my original historical character from 1918 Boston!
I've been doing some workshopping with my custom historical characters because I've been a little bored with AG's historical offerings of late, and because it's a fun excuse to dig into moments in time that interest me personally, but AG probably wouldn't produce a similar character themselves. (I say that, but my 1940's Hawaii character predates Nanea, so who knows! Maybe I'm manifesting some future stuff I can borrow for my gals.)
Violet is the youngest of three siblings. Her older sister Alice is in her early 20's and either a nurse or a Hello Girl, leaning towards nursing because I'm not sure I want her to go overseas and she could work at a hospital in Boston during the war. Her older brother James is 19 and enlists in the Marines once the US enters World War I. I think by Violet Saves the Day, he's returned home dealing with quite a bit of "shellshock" and that becomes a somewhat major theme.
Her parents are pretty wealthy, and the family lives in a brownstone on Beacon Hill in Boston. Her dad is a doctor and mom is a suffragist who also gets involved in causes supporting the war effort. Both parents are very supportive of their kids following their passions and getting themselves out there in this still relatively new century, which is why Alice has been allowed to go to school instead of immediately marrying some wealthy guy.
Vi herself is a precocious and creative kid. I think she likes to draw and paint and generally be crafty and creative, which comes in handy when brainstorming ways she can support her brother overseas and the war effort more broadly. While she's not afraid to get her hands dirty, she does like typically girly things like having teatime and looking at catalogs filled with new dresses. Her book series would theoretically cover 1917 through 1919 or so, and touch on the war, Women's Suffrage, the Spanish Flu, shellshock, and possibly the Boston Molasses Disaster.
Currently I'm trying to come up with a best friend character for her, as she really needs a Nellie or Ruthie in her life with the age difference and both siblings being off doing exciting and scary things without her. There are a lot of different directions I could go in with said friend - fellow wealthy-ish kid feels boring, Boston had a lot of new immigrant communities in the 1910's, some of whom did live in a specific part of Beacon Hill, Boston historically struggles with insidious covert racism but was still a city with a number of prominent Black and Jewish communities - and nothing's quite clicked as perfect just yet.
Violet is a Marie-Grace doll with a Nanea wig. Someone was selling her on a Facebook group a few years ago and I immediately felt like she was a Violet and needed to join my crew. Her last name was inspired by Lady Dorothie Fielding, a British woman who drove an ambulance during WWI and received several awards for bravery and service. Fielding's letters home were published after her death and are a really fascinating look at what it was like on the front lines doing this incredibly dangerous and important work. I used it as a major primary source for an educational interactive I helped develop in one of my previous jobs.

Buon Natale from Francesca! 🎄
Francesca Vitale, one of my original characters, is an Italian girl in 1920s Pittsburgh. Having lost her mother in the 1918 flu pandemic and as the daughter of a hardworking steelworker, Francesca finds her voice and comfort in her close-knit Italian community.
For Christmas Eve she can’t wait to help Tia Zita cook up a surprise for her family and friends.
Francesca is a Ruthie doll but I’m planning to curl and bob her hair eventually. Her dress is from Donna’s Dollhouse on Etsy.
(When I first heard about Lila, I was excited— since I was a kid I always wanted an Italian-American doll though I hoped she’d be a historical. Of all my OCs, Francesca’s (and Karine’s) concept is most inspired by my family history.)

Sewn a new dress for Ellie, found this cute South Park print fabric. It's the first time I learned how to sew puffed sleeves like this, and they look darling! I also found out that the South Park movie will be having special screenings in June for the 25th anniversary (and it's a sing-along version lol), so Ellie is coming with me to that (she's the one kid who's allowed to watch stuff with swears lol).

American Girl Historical OCs: Zabel Gevorgyan, 1992
Zabel Gevorgyan leaves Armenia for the United States with her parents and studious seventeen year old sister Siranush following the aftermath of the collapse of the Soviet Union. Her family already survived the devastating 1988 Spitak earthquake, and Zabel’s parents are raising her to see herself as strong and a survivor, but the uncertainty, war, and political instability in post-Soviet life leads her family to want a new beginning. In her new home of Watertown, Massachusetts, Zabel finds that the Armenian-American community she now lives in is welcoming, and she easily makes new friends at school, even if learning to read and write in English is difficult for her. The unusual 1992 Presidential election also teaches Zabel a lot of things about America she hadn’t known. Zabel initially has trouble relating to her new American friends and neighbors despite sharing a cultural background with many of them, and doesn’t know how to talk to them about her life, but gradually learns to open up to others and even finds new talents in helping her Armenian-American friends learn the Armenian language, and running on the school track team. But Zabel doesn’t know how to help her sister, who she’s always looked up to, when Siranush begins experiencing severe trauma symptoms, staying in her room all the time and refusing to go outside or talk to anyone. Zabel learns that life in America is often unpredictable, but that having to be strong does not mean having to be powerless in the face of adversity.

Emauni has a big soccer game today! Wah Paw Moo doesn’t know much about soccer but she loves her friend and is excited to cheer for her!
The soccer uniform for E just arrived today and I got a new backpack and drink for WPM so naturally I had to dress my girls up immediately. Perhaps I’ll take them outside for a proper photoshoot later this week.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Emauni is a 46/Gabriela and Wah Paw Moo is a Jess. They’re both in the 4th grade here in Omaha and quickly becoming best friends. Wah Paw Moo’s is part of an immigrant family from the border region of Myanmar and Thailand (specifically the Karen peoples), and tends to be shy and stick to her insular immigrant community. Emauni is currently her main ambassador to American culture. Emauni is outgoing and excited that she gets to encourage her new friend Wah Paw Moo to get outside her bubble and have new experiences! Here’s hoping her game goes well!

Today is my birthday, and I'm bringing Celestina (and my other doll Kami) to see Little Mermaid with me. I made Celestina a rainbow mermaid scale dress, thought it was fitting since it's the last day of Pride, go out with a bang. And now I have 2 Ariel mini dolls, and Celestina loves them, says they're sisters. Be on the lookout for more pics today!

Ivy and Rosebud came with us to a Lunar New Year's celebration on Saturday. (Julie would have come, but kiddo chose Rosebud and I had only made two qipao/cheongsam).
Tumblr media
We posed in the sun before heading out. Ivy and Rosebud are both wearing hairclips that I made just for Lunar New Year. I didn't really follow a pattern, but pulled together some things that gave a feel of an Asian hair ornament. I think technically they'd be buyao since the beads could move as they walk.
Ivy's uses squares of fabric folded up into triangles and glued together to make a flower. (And it already lost a bead, apparently).
Tumblr media
Rosebud's is a bow made with two heart shaped yo-yos using a Clover yo-yo maker. I added on some 12 gauge wire and part of a closure that I lost the other half to.
Tumblr media
The event had a lovely qipao fashion show/dance routine as one of the events, so I got some inspiration for future qipao for Ivy and Corinne. There were quite a lot of people (many more than I expected!) so the girls mostly stayed in our wagon. Tables were set up for activities, but there was barely room for the kiddos, let alone the dolls.
Tumblr media
Apparently there were loads of people complimenting them, but they only chose to approach and gush when my husband was there. :( (We swapped off hanging with the kids and hanging with the dolls).
But we did manage to snag a lovely picture of them in the end! Ivy was very happy to share some of her favorite things about Lunar New Year's with Rosebud.
Tumblr media
I'm hoping to sew clothes to expand a few of my dolls collections (including Ivy) this year. While technically she could wear the red one that's on Rosebud, it actually makes her look very sallow. I think I'd like to make Corinne a purple one, so for now it'll be the loaner one for any doll lucky enough to accompany one of them to a Chinese event.

I crocheted K's shawl and knitted her socks, and my grandma made Eliza's dress & coat (she used K's birthday dress and Samantha's og coat as inspo)
Eliza is my sister's Joss doll that I did not ask permission to use and put out in the cold lmao

My (reposted) inaugural tumblr version of my old blog features Violet Fielding, my custom American Girl character from 1918 Boston. Violet is the youngest of three kids and is trying to find ways to do her part during World War I, and then again during the Spanish Flu epidemic.
World War I food perfectly combines the worst parts of wartime food and early 20th century food: it's often incredibly bland, and you're also working with wartime restrictions or guidance. Because the US was only involved in the war for 18 months, the government never instituted rationing, but the Food Administration still made a huge effort to get the public on board with conserving food with slogans like “FOOD IS FUEL FOR FIGHTERS. Do not waste it. Save WHEAT, MEAT, SUGARS AND FATS. Send more to our Soldiers, Sailors and Allies.”
Tons of booklets and other materials were produced encouraging Americans to conserve different ingredients needed by the military. Non-government publishers hopped on the bandwagon too. These sandwiches were made with a fruit and peanut butter spread included in "Everyday Foods in War Time" by Mary Swartz Rose. Published in 1917, it includes a forward explaining that the book is meant for the housewife seeking guidance on adjusting her mean plans to this unprecedented time. Every chapter includes a forward with advice on how to ensure your family is getting the proper nutrients while adjusting your shopping list to meet wartime conditions.
Here's the recipe:
Fruit and Peanut Butter (for Sandwiches)
Dates, ¼ cup
Figs, ¼ cup
Peanut butter, ½ cup
Salt, ½ teaspoon
Lemon juice, 1½ tablespoons
Raisins, ¼ cup
Corn syrup (light), 2 tablespoons
Wash figs, raisins, and dates, and put through food chopper. Add salt, peanut butter, lemon juice, and corn syrup, and mix well.
I picked this out because I wanted an excuse to break out our new food processor, and also because it seemed like something that would be up Violet's alley as a filling for sandwiches she could take to school, enjoy as a snack, or serve with tea. It made an extremely sticky, thick, almost moldable vs. spreadable filling, and you'll probably not be shocked to hear that it was pretty sweet and basically just a blended PB&J, so therefore very tasty. It didn't make a ton of filling - I'd say you'd probably get eight or so small tea sandwiches, and four bigger lunch sandwiches, if you don't cut the bread in half. But it's also easy enough to double or triple the recipe if you need more. I'd definitely make it again, although I'd maybe like to experiment with reducing the sugar content.

Phuong Kim Hoang and Mai Linh Hoang · 1996 · Atlanta, GA
Phuong and Mai are 12 year old Vietnamese American twin sisters in Atlanta. Both of their parents are immigrants. Though the twins have different styles and hobbies, they both like technology (they share their cassette tapes, Gameboy, and camera). They have a pair of pet parakeets named Lemon and Lime. Phuong’s preferred sport is table tennis and she also likes choreographing dances, while Mai plays both soccer and volleyball. Both girls are excited for the 1996 Olympic Games in their city, but come to realize the games’ impact on locals and the environment. They are further alarmed by the bombing that occurs in their city. Both girls are pretty outgoing and share a lot of mutual friends. Their uncle owns a Vietnamese food stand and the girls like to help him out and sample his food.
If they were dolls, they would both have the Corinne mold, black hair, and dark brown eyes. Phuong would wear glasses and wear braids, and Mai would have shoulder-length hair and a beauty mark next to her nose.
